Last time I looked – here in New Zealand we have a lawful right to ‘freedom of association’?

I choose to work on an issue by issue basis, with those with whom I share a common cause.

It doesn’t mean that I agree with everything that person has ever said or done, and vice versa.

However, I have found working on an issue by issue basis, to have been politically as ‘liberating’ as it has arguably been effective.

I’m not a member of, or associated with any political party, and am thus genuinely (and fiercely) politically independent.

Penny the list of names you cut and pasted above are the list of contributing experts from New Zealand. The question must be asked what did you contribute, apart from completing one of the questionaires and when?

Looking through the list I see that Mr Orlov is no longer a Lawyer having had his named removed from the roll of lawyers. I will also be asking a couple of colleagues whose names I saw on the list just what their contribution was. Purely for interests sake of course.

You know, this is a problematic statement, in regards to Poland. You probably haven’t been following what is going on there since the current government came into power late last year, but “demonstrating leadership” they are not. And even though the above qualifies this by limiting it to “issues of mass immigration and Islamization”, I found myself wincing as I read it because I know Poland also isn’t being beset by hordes of Muslims traveling from Lesbos northwards, even though they are getting hundreds of thousands of Ukranians seeking refuge. The Polish government is also generating such alarm that they could quite possibly be overthrown by the Polish people some time soon, as it’s pretty much a Polish duty to overthrow insane governments.

Helen Kelly wants referendum on legalising cannabis at the next election

Terminally ill former trade unions boss Helen Kelly wants a referendum on whether cannabis should be legalised, and says she is talking to MPs about making it happen.

Kelly, who has lung cancer, has been taking cannabis oil sourced from the black market to relieve her pain and believes it is “absolutely ludicrous” New Zealand’s laws have forced her to do so.

In what sense starboard? Marijuana is a useful pain reliever but it’s value to cancer patients is to mitigate the awful side effects of the drugs used to treat the disease. Additionally morphine reduces people to zombie status which despite the hyperbole pushed on this forum, doesn’t have to be the case with cannabis.

What do you have against making the final days of a terminally ill person more bearable?

Why doesn’t someone ask Pharmac why they won’t fund other more effective pain medications like Diamorphine (Heroin as it’s commonly known)? Highly effective for cancer pain and commonly used in the UK where pharmaceutical grade product is routinely prescribed to the terminally ill. It’s not expensive either.

Liberalism Has Gone Beyond “Mainstreaming Dumb” To “Mainstreaming Crazy”

“If every conservative and moderate in America disappeared tomorrow, liberals would party like they won the Super Bowl. Five years later, the entire economy would collapse; Cuba, Mexico and Canada would be occupying parts of the United States and President Bernie Sanders would be encouraging people to burn down the remaining businesses that hadn’t gone under to protest unemployment.

They’re pursuing both spending and immigration policies that could fairly be called suicidal for America. On the international scene, Obama has managed to restart the Cold War with Russia, throw away two wars Bush had already won in Afghanistan and Iraq and has enabled the rise of ISIS.

If there is a part of America that’s important or works, liberals are systematically trying to destroy it. We HAD – emphasis on the word HAD – the best healthcare system in the world before Obamacare. Under Obama’s incompetent leadership, the economy STILL hasn’t recovered from the housing crash of 2007. Marriage was already in trouble; so rather than trying to fix it, liberals were like, “Hey, let’s kick that all the way down the stairs with gay marriage! Then we’ll push a refrigerator down the stairs behind it with polygamy next!” Despite the fact that we now have the first black president, his supporters have spent practically his entire presidency trying to create race riots and foment hatred between black and white Americans.

As a rule, liberals support stupid, counter-productive policies that do more harm than good to the country. This is what I mean by saying that they’re “mainstreaming dumb.”

However, we’ve now gotten to the point where liberals are “mainstreaming crazy.” By that, I mean there is increasingly a merger of thought between radical college professors, weird feminists, commenters on the Daily Kos and Democrat senators.

By the time some fruit loop at Berkeley spouts off a half-thought-out piece of ludicrous nuttery, an article has been written about it and you’ve had time to roll your eyes and say, “Ugh, what a kook,” some Democrat congressman is publicly agreeing with him.

For example, if you don’t get “affirmative consent” before sex, it’s considered rape on some campuses. The same goes if your partner has been drinking.

That’s not just dumb; it’s crazy. By that standard, practically every man in America is a rapist. None of it is “rape” in the sense that normal human beings think of rape. In fact, it’s hard to believe human beings who’ve had intimate encounters came up with this. It seems more like a system that space aliens who’ve seen human mating from afar would have devised.

Then consider the #blacklivesmatter nut bags. Basically, these losers run around the country randomly blocking traffic and deliberately annoying people to protest the police. Setting aside the fact that it would be impossible to ever please these crackpots since they side with criminals who try to take the guns of police officers and they oppose using ANY amount of force to arrest resisting suspects, they’re habitually stupid, rude and obnoxious. Yet, this gang of idiots managed to force Democratic Presidential nominee Martin O’Malley to apologize for saying “All lives matter.” Yes, saying “All Lives Matter” is now a major gaffe on the Left.

Wow.

Then, there is the Left’s complete inability to handle gender, something most children have grasped by the time they’re four years old.

It’s one thing to cater to people who are mentally ill and to falsely tell them that they can become another sex. It’s not true, it’s not good for them and they’d be better off if they just went to therapy, but liberals are wrong about pretty much everything else; so it’s no surprise they’re wrong about that, too.

However, liberals are now demanding that all of society cater to other people’s mental illnesses. They want BIRTH CERTIFICATES changed to falsify the gender of people who now identify as a different gender. They get outraged if people refer to a man, with his genitalia still dangling between his legs, as a man. They believe that if Norman Bates gets up today, puts on his mother’s dress and says he feels like a woman, then he should be able to use the women’s bathroom and anybody who complains is a bigot.

This sounds like the sort of vision of society some maladjusted kid who was left by himself to grow up in an abandoned Barbie factory would come up with; yet, it’s what liberals now believe.

Then there’s abortion.

Hey, we all know the only thing liberals love better than killing babies is getting paid to kill babies, but they used to at least try to hide the blood on their hands. Remember when liberals used to say that they believed abortion should be “safe, legal and rare?” Sure, it wasn’t true, but at least they felt obliged to say it to keep from looking bloodthirsty. Then we moved on to, “We support abortion anytime, anywhere for any reason.” Your baby has an issue? Abort her! You got a girl and you wanted a boy? Abort her! Is the pregnancy going to ruin your selfies when you go on a vacation to the beach later this year? Abort her!

Well, now, we’ve veered from heartless all the way into psychopathy because the liberal position is that it’s okay to abort children and then SELL THE BABY PARTS FOR PROFIT. The closest thing that comes to mind to what Planned Parenthood is doing today is what the Nazis did during WWII. Even liberals would have probably (Who knows with them anymore?) opposed selling the organs ripped out of dead babies for profit if you’d asked them about it a month ago, but once they found out Planned Parenthood was doing it, they were uniformly behind something that can legitimately be compared to a Nazi war atrocity. How do you sleep at night when in 2015 you’re supporting the moral equivalent of the Nazis using human skin to make lampshades*?

To have so many Americans embracing this kind of depravity and madness doesn’t bode well for the future of the country.”

Alcohol in perspective

The NSAD, (formally the National Society on Alcoholism), was founded in 1954 for the sole purpose of understanding and treating alcoholism. In fact the idea that other drug use in New Zealand was creating addiction problems didn’t really register as a public concern until the latter half of the 1960s. These new substances of concern – such as cannabis, opiates, and LSD – quickly gained a reputation as being habitually used by those with socially deviant, anti-establishment, and criminal leanings.

Legislation, in the form of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1965, was passed in reaction to these emerging concerns (both here and internationally) associated with ‘other’ drug use. The passing of this legislation essentially created an idea which has become the prevalent cultural bias to this day in New Zealand society:

Namely that a drug, is a drug, because of its illicit status,
and that alcohol, given its legality, is somehow not a drug.

Thinking in these black and white terms of illegal drugs as ‘bad,’ and legal drugs being ‘good,’ or somehow not really being drugs (like nicotine in tobacco for example) is far too simplistic and ignores the wealth of research and data available to us in judging an intoxicating substance’s relative harm to individuals, families, and society as a whole.

Alcohol is a drug

Its proper name is ethanol, which is short-hand for ethyl alcohol. Health professionals specialising in addictions research have noted that if alcohol were a newly discovered drug today and applied to the Expert Drugs Advisory Committee, illicit drug harms index, it would be categorised as a class B ‘high risk’ restricted drug. Alcohol as a new drug would find itself sitting alongside morphine, ecstasy, d-amphetamine, and GHB. (Sellman, Robinson, Beasley, 2009).

Alcohol harms in New Zealand today, some statistics to consider

A third of all police apprehensions in New Zealand involve alcohol
Half of all serious violent crimes in New Zealand relate to alcohol
Half of child homicides in New Zealand involve Alcohol.
There are over 300 alcohol-related offences every day in New Zealand.
There are over 500 serious and fatal injury traffic crashes attributed to alcohol every year
Up to 75% of adult presentations at Emergency Departments on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are alcohol-related
60% of all calls to the Alcohol Drug Helpline are alcohol related
60 different medical conditions are caused by heavy drinking
At least 600 children are born each year with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder
There are over 1000 alcohol related deaths in New Zealand every year

“As a philosophical basis for drug policy, the justice perspective is very limited. Its underlying premise, that illegal drugs are ‘bad’ while legal drugs are generally ‘good’ is too black and white to be credible.”

I’m not a medical doctor.. so I can’t really offer anything apart from my observations of the 3 family members who had been on morphine with their cancers.

My youngest brother had rhabdomyosarcoma (cancer of red muscle tissue)… he was active for 6=7months while he had chemo and only in his last couple of weeks was too weak to walk. He drank whiskey along with his morphine.

My old man had lung cancer and decided not to take any chemo/radiation treatment. At first he went to live with older bro & sis-in-law and morphine pain-killers must have been given by district nurses. He did have some hallucinations there (mustn’t have got doses right).
Finally sis-in-law relented and let Dad go into Hawera hospital (5 mins away from their home)… morphine levels got stabilised … so in last few days of life, Dad was fine to talk to (blood dribbling out of mouth), but tired.

Mother-in-law had resisted all forms of medical advice to have her ovarian cancer treated. We had to put her into a retirement home after she had had 3 bad falls in her own home. The morphine pain relief she had there kept her active and lucid. Hubby had taken her out for lunch on the day she died. A couple of hours later she reported that she was in pain and was given 1 dose of pain relief ; she said she was still in pain and was given more. Then she went unconscious and died within an hour. (A coroner’s inquest was held).

I have personal experience of morphine use maggy .
I definitely found it far more debilitating than smoking a joint or two .
I am also aware from experience of the nausea it can cause , the rapid escalation in dosage needed to keep getting the same effects and its addictive property’s.
Junkies call the hit from opiates the nods.

Thanks Maggy. I reckon that once a person gets admitted to a hospice that they’ll receive good treatment. That, of course, provided that they have the good fortune to be allotted an atheist or protestant doctor…..otherwise all bets are off.

It’s during that bit in between diagnosis & incapacitation that I’ve noticed room for improvement. I would add that any medication should be a subject for the patient & their doctor.

Not the bloody state!

Might not be in NZ but many other places including the usa where power ball is presently at 800,000,000 usd there is considerable tax due if you take the winnings in a lump sum.

Oh, but hold on. That’s not how we spell ‘wine’ in NZ and we don’t generally have basements in our houses, more “downstairs’. And who do you know that has a wine cellar? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. Maybe a beer fridge in NZ but only Albainians have wine cellars. Can you clarify what sort of wine it is because there are certain types of red that don’t cellar well?

Alchohol

I drink wine, lots of it( I have Italian Heritage, so its a cultural requirement.). However, i have never caused an accident, killed my kids, got arrested, landed up in ANE on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday ( or any other day ending in “Y”), had alcohol related health problems…. maybe I am drinking a different kind of alcohol to Griffs. The point I am making is that alcohol is not he problem, it is the ABUSE of alcohol that is the problem just as the abuse of any item will cause problems, be they cars, guns, Macdonald’s burgers or plain old water. We could learn a lot from societies where alcohol is consumed as a normal part of a meal rather than a race to get pissed.

T’ain’t Griffs alcohol it is society’s alcohol The harm it does is from police and medical statistics .
We have had half a dozen people post recently claiming they have no problem then admitting to drinking alcohol above the medical professions safe limits.
Alcohol is the problem and at a guess you would be another who drinks outside of the limits considered safe .
A couple of glasses every meal increases you chance of getting cancer by a significant amount as well as the damage it is doing to your liver .
Guidelines say you should abstain at lest three days a week.
I drink Around three standard drinks a week well within the limits considered safe.
I also occasional smoke pot again well within the limits of moderation as do Tens of thousands of New Zealanders.
One is legal one is not the reason for the difference has nothing to do with the possible effects on the user or society
