Goff out of Parliament win or lose the Mayoralty

Stuff reports:

Mt Roskill MP Phil Goff says he will quit Parliament at the 2017 election if he fails in his bid for the Auckland mayoralty.

Goff, 62, said he had moved on in his mind and felt he had “done all the things I wanted – or had the opportunity to do, should I say – in central government”.

He wanted to be Prime Minister but he became leader at the wrong time for that.

“If  I lose the mayoralty I wouldn’t put the country to the unnecessary cost and expense of a by-election but I would stand down at the following election in 2017.”

So cheaper for taxpayers if Goff loses!
