As far as this new plan to combat burglary by getting every single instance investigated by Police – I laughed so much I nearly bought myself a pie.

Until there are harsh penalties (or in fact any meaningful penalty) handed down by our silly old judges, or a complete rewrite of a few laws for not only thieves, but thieves with many convictions, you could employ another ten thousand Police and it wouldn’t make a jot of difference.

The c***(s) who stole 500 cows in Ashburton says it all.

A totally outrageous crime, carried out by folks who would have known there would be a slim chance of getting away with it, because of the sheer scale of the operation – not to mention the NAIT system etc – yet they did it anyway knowing the worst that might happen to them is a bit of Home D.

Four things I will guarantee you

1: The cattle rustlers will be caught
2: The Police will know them
3: They will receive no penalty that makes their jaw drop and their lawyer stammer
4: They will reoffend.

In the absence of anything better, here is my idea for how to deal with recidivists in New Zealand. Three strikes for criminal convictions; upon the third conviction, you lose any right to any free state assistance from healthcare to unemployment benefit to a pension for the remainder of your natural life. Plus instant deportation for entire family if the offender is an immigrant.

  Imagine if that was say Bill Englishes cows or Findlayson had owned them.Well in his case the Iwi will probably get them back.

  The general public are safer in their own homes when there is no market for stolen goods.
  
  Giving the maximum sentence to people who have stolen goods in their possession gets rid of the market. A judge imposed it upon people in the mid 80’s in CH-CH as there were people selling stolen stuff in pup carparks. These sentences were huge fines and PD – which is not harsh – and within two weeks you never heard people asking if you wanted a cheap tv.
  People currently pay huge traffic related penalties for minor infringements + high insurances where there cars are concerned, and other people who invade their homes and private property should be dealt with in the same way – criminal charges, high penalties, and civil cases bought buy insurance companies – as[I believe] they do when arson occurs.

  Yup, unfortunately to get the Brown Cuddles, the government have gone completely against well proven criminology theory.
  
  It is well known that the optimum IQ level for criminality is in the 70-80 region. Not completely incompetent, but a bit lacking.
  
  Because the average crim is a bit short on reasoning, they need to be given very clear messages like: Crime does not pay. You will be caught and you will be punished and you will not like it.
  
  All the ideologically driven wishy-washy “tag and release” policies to reduce people going through the courts teach crims that they probably won’t get caught and if they do, they will just be driven around in a van for an hour or two then released.
  
  Having had a run in with the cops is now a badge of honour.
  
  Criminality is a learned pattern. It starts with anti-social behaviour and general disrespect for society and authority mixed in with a sense of entitlement. It starts with vandalism (including “tagging”) and “petty” crime., but once the patterns get established they lose any fear of punishment and the petty theft moves on to more major theft.
  
  The only solution is get the right messages in early. It is better to run someone through the courts for vandalism (including tagging) and other low level offense and give them a taste of the justice system rather than let the offenses build up to serious crime first.

I see the Race Relations Commissar has garnered New Zealand Worldwide Headlines saying that “we shouldn’t become as racist as Australia” as she launches her Orwellian “thatsus” project that encourages people to report any “racist incidents” which include “not being smiled at during University enrolment”.

I’m assuming her project doesn’t include rape, murder, street violence or burglaries as recent crime stats (especially on the later) seem to prove these are no longer a priority for our Rulers. Instead (no doubt lavishly funded), Devoy is rooting out the so called “racists”, fictional or not, wherever she can find them.

What my simple mind doesn’t understand though is that if we are as racist as the likes of Devoy makes out we are, why is the world clambering to get her and every other White Western Country?

And did “Dame” Susan have in mind this bunch of angry Muslims who shouted and screamed down Lindsay Perigo on Monday night in Auckland when he dared put forward to offer his thoughts on the Islamisation of New Zealand. It’s hard to know as Dame Susan stormed out of the debate when reality collided with her fantasy world of rainbows, holding hands and kumbaya.

The account (below) that Lindsay Perigo recently gave of his reception by a hostile Muslim audience attempting to prevent his exercising his right to free speech is more than ominous. It is the thin end of the wedge, a virtual bullying which many see our Race Relations Office misguidedly accommodating, instead of insisting on that vital unpinning of freedom necessary for any free society to survive.

  Dame Devoid is a busy woman. Apart from rubbishing Australian race relations (which will make John Key’s job harder in negotiations on NZ’ers rights in Australia) she has joined debate about racism in Christchurch school rugby.
  
  The Christchurch Press reports today that St Thomas school, which says it has 240 Maori, Islanders, and Filipinos on its roll, reports these kids are subjected to racist remarks in rugby matches with other schools.
  
  In an inquiry, another school seems to have brought a lawyer along, and St Thomas seems unhappy with the lawyer being able to question the young witnesses.
  
  At a glance, the row seems to be about the accused schools and kids’ rights to question the accusing kids. At least one of the St Thomas non-white kids is quoted as saying he felt the questioning was intimidating.
  
  An important legal principle is at stake here. Is the Devoid faction going to be allowed to steamroll over the democratic rights of accused people to defend themselves?
  
  Climbing into the row as well as Dame Devoid is Andrew Becroft, the Children’s Commissioner. (Yep, the former principle youth court judge, who wants people as old as 19 dealt with by youth courts. Among those this could mean lighter sentences and privacy for would be some “king-hitters” and other thugs.)
  
  The police are also joining in the school-rugby row, with Inspector Hirone Waretini saying the force will work with anyone “who wants to work with us in preventing racial abuse in sport.
  
  Racism in rugby is a new sport in itself. It’s interesting that one of those in the south punished for allegedly making a racist remark (to a Pacific Islander) is himself part-Maori, and has played for a representative Maori team.

There are plenty of bad mothers about but we do not make movies about them. If there were any we would not see an article like this just before Mother’s Day that focused on bad mothers. The majority of fathers in NZ may not be perfect but are pretty good – particularly the ones who took part in raising their children.

    I think EAD you will find the police are only investigating one individual, not that she only received one piece of abuse. From the articles today – and some previously seen, she has received quite a bit of harassment online – as have any MP’s who have opposed Corbyn, most calling them traitors, the women receiving more sexist and misogynistic comments. Most is via social media. Don’t downplay abuse and harassment that has been sustained and nasty.

Interesting listening to Key interviewed by Leighton Smith yesterday.
Too much to comment on but Key mentioned how Chinese can’t buy property in China.
If the Chinese government want to be like a western economy then why the hell does the world let them distort many countries economies by allowing them to buy property everywhere else.
This favoured status that Labour inserted in the FTA is having a major impact on our country as can be seen by the housing crisis , but the whole mass investment by Chinese in property around the world is contributing to disruption everywhere.The western world needs to push back on this and fast.

The effect that tens of party members are now billionaires (measured in US dollars) doesn’t change the fact that the People’s Republic of China is a communist state.

  In the USA the system that elects the president works by electoral collage votes not the over all majority in the national vote.
  Just because candidate X wins the majority of the national vote does not mean he wins enough of the 538 electoral collage votes in the individual states to swing the presidency .
  This is why swing states that can go to either Republican or Democrat are the important thing to watch in the polling not the over all total.

The Chinese own most of K Road. You don’t want to know how much of Auckland they own.

If the Labour Party / NZ First had the brains and more importantly the funds, and were able to illustrate clearly how much of NZ is now owned by Asians / Indians of whatever stripe -even though they have a bit of paper saying they are ‘Kiwis’, when they can’t even speak English, National would be out on their ears in 2017.

It’s this simple.

Traditional New Zealanders expect to have a certain lifestyle, and if it is not delivered, they do not return you at the ballot box.

So National (and to a degree Labour) understand this; and import foreigners en masse to grow the economy and shrink the size of the dependent losers, as a proportion of the whole population.

The only difference is National import workers, Labour import shirkers.

The whole front page of the DomPost this morning is completely given over to Celia Weighed-Down endorsing Justin Lester (Labour) and slagging off the other candidates like a slapper.

Very bottom of page 6 is a very small story about Fran Wilde and Kerry Pendergast (both former Wellington mayors) endorsing Jo Coughlan.

Both stories by Michael Forbes … so I guess we now know which way Michael and the DomPost’s editor vote.

Meanwhile the media wonders why we don’t rate them as highly as they rate themselves …

Obama’s complete failure in Iran.

Obama’s principle claim is that due to his deal, Iran no longer has a short-term nuclear breakout capacity. He also says that in accordance with the deal, Iran has shipped its nuclear materials out of the country. These claims are both untrue and misleading.

On Thursday Reuters reported that Iran did not ship the quantities of low-enriched uranium out of the country in the quantities the deal required.

Last January, when the deadline arrived for Iran to comply with the deal’s clauses calling for it to move its uranium enriched to 3.5 percent and 20 percent out of the country and so enable the US and its European colleagues to cancel UN sanctions against it, it worked out that Iran had failed to comply.

Rather than acknowledge Iran’s failure and maintain the sanctions in accordance with their deal, the Americans and Europeans decided to move the goalpost closer to Iran.

They secretly decreased the amount of uranium the Iranians were required to part with. They then announced triumphantly that they were canceling UN sanctions because Iran had complied with the agreement.

Reuters reported that much of the low-enriched uranium Iran did remove from its territory wasn’t actually removed from its possession. Instead it was transferred to neighboring Oman, where it is held under Iranian guard and control.

Obama of course knows all of this. So his claims that the agreement “worked” are nothing more than a card trick meant to trick the American public.

Obama’s assertion that Iran’s breakout time to a nuclear arsenal has been slowed as a result of his deal is similarly a stretch of the imagination. The Iranians have suspended much of their prior centrifuge spinning. But that is only because they are now directing their efforts to developing and deploying more advanced centrifuges that will be able to enrich uranium to bomb grade material far more rapidly than the centrifuges they were required to retire.

Experts have already placed Iran’s post-deal nuclear breakout time at a mere six months. And Iran can leave the agreement – which it never actually signed or officially agreed to – anytime it wants.

While developing their next generation centrifuges, the Iranians are expanding the range and precision of their ballistic missiles, deploying them and increasing the size of their arsenals. Despite the fact that these actions are prohibited under US law and breach what was initially claimed about the ever-changing nuclear deal, the Obama administration has refused to impose sanctions against Iran, insisting that its actions merely breach the spirit, rather than substance, of the deal.

The administration has had a similar response to Iran’s recent deployment of Russia’s S-300 missile defense battery around its military nuclear site at Fordo. On Sunday Iranian television showed footage of the missiles being set up around the formerly secret site.

As Omri Ceren of the Israel Project noted this week, Iran’s deployment of the S-300 system places it in breach of three US sanctions laws. Despite this, the White House announced on Wednesday that it has no intention of enforcing US law and applying sanctions on Iran. The S-300 missiles can be used both as a defensive system and as an offensive one.

On Tuesday, Tehran announced that it will be launching three satellites in the coming months.

Satellite launches are widely viewed as a means through which Iran is covertly developing a longrange ballistic missile capability. Rather than censure Iran for its actions, the Obama administration insists that such actions, as well as Iran’s recent longrange rocket tests, do not violate the nuclear deal or warrant US action.

Taken separately and together, Iran’s actions since the nuclear deal was officially concluded make clear that it continues to pursue its nuclear program, and indeed, has become more brazen in its nuclear operations than it was before the agreement was announced last year.

In other words, not only has the deal not worked, contrary to Obama’s claims, it has been a colossal failure on every level. The deal’s opponents were entirely right about the dangers it posed and Obama was entirely wrong.

      Really? For Unternehmen Barbarossa, the Axis countries crowded upwards of 150 divisions against their border with the Soviet Union (that’s around 1.5 million combat troops). One of my next door neighbours was burgled last week while she was away down south. They got in by using a crowbar on the back door. My wife and I were home, but we never heard a thing, nor did anyone else in the vicinity. The main item stolen was a flat TV.
I phoned the police as soon as I realised what had happened [a front window had been left open and that made me take a look] and a police officer came out the next morning. I tried phoning the local police but a recorded message tells you to dial 111 for burglaries. The heighbour has now had an alarm fitted, for what it’s worth.
Another house just across the road was burgled about a month ago while the owners were overseas. Quite a bit of jewellery stolen. They had an alarm but it had been turned off by a caretaker. He was supposed to turn it on again but apparently took crook. A bit suss, one would have to say.

Sounds case: Police about-turn on mystery ketch
An Auckland couple has broken their silence over the “mystery ketch” on which Ben Smart and Olivia Hope were last seen alive – and say the boat’s skipper told them he was at Furneaux Lodge in Marlborough Sounds on New Year’s Eve, 1997.

Water-taxi driver Guy Wallace says he dropped Smart and Hope at a ketch the night they disappeared, but police have said no ketch existed, instead saying the pair went aboard Scott Watson’s single-masted sloop. Watson was convicted for the murders and is serving a 17-year sentence.

But David and Rachel Arlidge say a boat berthed beside them at Bayswater Marina in Auckland at the time of the murder investigation – and seen by hundreds of boaties around the country – matched the description of the mystery ketch.

Police will meet the Arlidges to take a statement, a move that has astonished long-time Watson campaigner Mike Kalaugher.

Last week, Olivia Hope’s father Gerald expressed growing doubts about Watson’s conviction and said he would try to free him if convinced of his innocence. Two other key police witnesses – Wallace and Furneaux Lodge bar manager Roz McNeilly – have also retracted their evidence and believe Watson is innocent.

Only vaguely aware of the double murders after months sailing in Australia, the Arlidges were at Bayswater Marina in late February/early March, 1998, just a couple of months after Smart and Hope disappeared.

They noticed a “striking” white ketch – with a blue stripe, round portholes, unusual rope work and no name – moored next to them. However, police had said no such ketch was wanted in connection with the murders.

When we first reported about the imminent paralysis of an unknown number of global supply chains and a potential shock in worldwide trade as a result of the historic bankruptcy of Hanjing Shipping, one of the world’s largest container shipping companies which handles 8% of Trans-Pacific trade volume for the US market, we concluded that “the global implications from the bankruptcy are unknown: if, as expected, the company’s ships remain “frozen” and inaccessible for weeks if not months, the impact on global supply chains will be devastating, potentially resulting in a cascading waterfall effect, whose impact on global economies could be severe as a result of the worldwide logistics chaos. The good news is that both economists and corporations around the globe, both those impacted and others, will now have yet another excuse on which to blame the “unexpected” slowdown in both profits and economic growth in the third quarter.”

However, not even this extreme forecast captured what would happen just 48 hours later, when as the WSJ reported overnight, retailers have gone far beyond simply blaming the Hanjing bankruptcy for their upcoming woes: they are petitioning for a government bailout, or as the WSJ put it, they are “bracing for a blow as they stock up for the crucial holiday sales season, asked the government to step in and help resolve a growing crisis.”

Or, as America’s banks would call it, “get bailed out.” And, in taking a page right out of the 2008 bank bailout, the doom and gloom scenarios emerge:
“While the situation is still developing, the prospect of harm is significant and apparent,” Sandra Kennedy, president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, wrote in a letter to the Department of Commerce and the Federal Maritime Commission. Hanjin’s recent bankruptcy filing “presents an enormous challenge to U.S. shippers,” she said, and “could have a substantial impact on consumers and the economy at large.”

If anyone is interested, here is an online scan of the Instrument Of Surrender document for the surrender of Japan in World War II, dated September 2nd, 1945, which was signed by the Japanese and major powers.

There is a signature for Dominion Of New Zealand Representative on Page 2, but it’s kind of hard to make out the name. It looks something like “Leonard M Joitt” or similar.

Saturday night – time for something different.

We remember the songs popular with the American soldiers in the Vietnam War – from “Fortunate Son” by Creedance Clearwater to Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”, then of course of another type was the “Ballad of the Green Berets”.

But here’s a song of the earlier Vietnam War, the French war. It is a German song of the Germans in the French Foreign Legion in Vietnam.

Many were persuaded to enter the Legion because they had been in the Waffen SS (the fighting arm of the SS), into which conscripts were added to volunteers from 1943. From some of the territories that changed hands from time to time between France and Germany, there were other native-German speakers who needed to keep their heads down for a while.

At Dien Bien Phu I think there were as many as four battalions of the Legion, the large part of them made up of Germans who had served on Russian Front.

    The Foreign Legion seems to be something of a death cult – Die for France.
    
    A Dunedin man, James Waddell, rose to lieutenant-colonel in the Legion and commanded one of its battalions at Gallipoli. The American poet, Alan Seeger, uncle of the well known folk singer Pete Seeger and the subject of a statue in Paris, was serving in Waddell’s battalion when Seeger was killed on the Somme in 1916.
    
    I wonder if the Americans had given more material aid to the French whether the French Forces might have headed off the Viet Minh for a few more years until Indo-China negotiated independence. The French had only a tiny fraction of the air support that the Americans and allies had in the final Vietnam War.

The people of that time who were writing songs & singing them weren’t all that keen on the war Don. In NZ only regular force servicemen went to Vietnam but compulsory military training was still operating & those chosen by ballot would have been the next on the plane.

The general feeling even amongst people of my parents’ generation was that it was better to fight the communists in Hanoi then Queen St. The younger you were the less you agreed with them.

    This was big in the 80’s when I lived in Oz – Jimmy Barnes lived about 40 miles away in a town called Mittagong. A mate of mine there (a kiwi) worked for Jimmy doing up his house.

I remember those days well. A mate of mine, Ra Te Amo was in the howitzer battallion in ‘Nam – did 2 tours, and loved the place – went back there after the war, I believe, and married a Vietnamese woman.
Another mate, Des Anderson was in the SAS, but when the govt. decided not to deploy them in – what – 1964?? – he left the SAS and went to ‘Nam and worked for the Americans. Has some amazing stories.
It did really piss me off with the reception the guys got when they came home – I really felt for them, and more than once got abuse for sticking up for them. Still got no time for the wimpy lefty longhairs of those days.

Most of them grew out of it…..work, family & a couple of mortgages tend to do that but I agree that the reception given the returning servicemen was totally beyond the pale.

Personally I only knew a couple of vets. One ended up a flamboyant homosexual publican….the other was a basketcase alkie.

      Tim’s Dad was a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm pilot and was killed in a training flight in 1952.
      
      Lots of New Zealanders flew in the Fleet Air Arm during World War 2. They could join in New Zealand. I think from midway through the war, if they wanted to join the RAF (as opposed to the RNZAF which was then mainly fighting in the Pacific) they had to make their way to Britain first.
      
      One NZ veteran of the Fleet Arm told me that 40 per cent of his mates were killed in training as they practised landings at shore fields before going to carriers.
      
      I think you will find Tim wears his Dad’s medals at commemoration services.

        Squadron Leader Noel James lived across the road from us when I was a kid – his son Paul was a good friend of mine. He flew TBF Grumman Avengers in the Pacific War. He would get our small scale model planes and describe to us how they would peel off in formation to attack enemy shipping or bomb enemy airfields – he used to hold us spell-bound.

  The Maori Battalion got a rough time fighting I think in the city at the foot of Monte Cassino. They were street fighting in rubble. A mini-Stalingrad. Bombardment had just made it harder for them.
  
  That was a rough battle. When the Poles finally got to the very top of the heavily bombed mountain, most of the remaining German paratroopers who were holding the mountain had slipped away.

    The problem at Monte Casino was that the intel on the occupying Germans was not very good, and the Maoris decided to advance before their supporting armour arrived. They got a good clean-up initially.
    My dad was involved -not at Monte Casino, but at the next major offensive on the east coast of Italy – the Battle for Rimini and the Po Valley.

A brown girl was put in a posh frock – unfortunately she didn’t have the airs and graces befitting anything non-trackpanty. It needed two parts to present the transformation – the next being a crash finishing school. I can just imagine the sight of little miss posh frock chewing with her mouth open and other terrors.
