So Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, which seems a little weird to me.

Mark Steyn has a terrific article on Dylan, which was published back in 2001 as Dylan turned 60. I thought you’d all enjoy one of the stories about him…

Visiting America a few years ago, Dave Stewart, of the Eurythmics, said to Dylan that the next time he was in England he should drop by his recording studio in Crouch End, an undistinguished north London suburb. Dylan, at a loose end one afternoon, decided to take him up on it and asked a taxi-driver to take him to Crouch End Hill. Cruising the bewildering array of near-namesake streets – Crouch End Hill, Crouch End Road, Crouch Hill End, Crouch Hill Road and various other permutations of “Crouch,” “End” and “Hill” – the cabbie accidentally dropped him off at the right number but in an adjoining street of small row houses. Dylan knocked at the front door and asked the woman who answered if Dave was in.

“No,” she said, assuming he was referring to her husband, Dave, who was out on a plumbing job. “But he should be back soon.” Bob asked if she would mind if he waited. Twenty minutes later, Dave – the plumber, not the rock star – returned and asked the missus whether there were any messages. “No,” she said, “but Bob Dylan’s in the front room having a cup of tea.”

  Not very impressed with Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize for Literature. But it had far greater justification than the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Barack Obama in the first year of his Presidency (2009).

    Still, they may have considered the fact it was a watershed in U.S and International politics . The first Black President elected by the world’s biggest and only Super Power . Unthinkable even a few years prior to 2009.

  Yawn – they’re sweating so much that they still have not reinstated advertising spending in states like Colorado. And of course Trump has completely pulled out of Virginia.
  
  Clinton is loathed, even by many Democrats, and her support is weak. She keeps whining about how she can’t understand why she’s not ahead by more. You’d think she’d have got the message by now: she’s hated.
  
  But not as hated as Trump, which is all that matters. He can’t seem to break out beyond his core group. What happened to all those millions of Democrats he said he’d get? Are they all hiding from pollsters too, in multiple, battleground states? And why is whining about the lack of support from “cuckservatives”? They weren’t supposed to be needed at all, just like he didn’t need the “GOPe”.
  
  Sweating? How about Trump’s flopsweat whinging loser talk. Doesn’t sound like a winner at all, making excuses for why he’s going to lose.

    While Clinton is not black, she is a woman and the same virtue signaling applies. On top of that you will get a whole lot of hate and vitriol thrown your way for being pro-Trump. Therefore it is easier to either say you’re pro Clinton or undecided.
    
    According to some polling, 25% of voters are “undecided”. That’s a huge number. Normally it is around 10% or so. This election has been the most heated ever. I recon those “undecided” are going to mainly be Trump supporters who are tired of being abused.

      The Shy Tory factor applies well in Britain, where you have a single, nation-wide election based on small electorates of one representative each.
      
      Not fifty state elections that are FPP but then allocate State-level “votes” that correspond to the number of representatives the state has in the House, which is the US situation. That’s why even huge landslide victories like LBJ’s in ’64 and Reagan’s in ’84, actually had only a small difference in total, nationwide votes for each candidate. The Electoral College was specifically designed to deliver that sort of result, so there would be no hangups about who won.
      
      As far as the “Bradley effect” is concerned, well that’s getting pretty ancient, and it only ever seemed to work once, in one locale of the USA. And in later years political scientists who have worked through the numbers and the polls have begun to ask whether it existed at all or was just another bullshit story from an MSM that made stupid predictions.

      We would likely expect the Cologne and other mass sexual assault allegations to be repeated in the UK amongst male Muslim immigrants . Even in Austalia , Canada , the US and here .

    Trump supporters need to stop blaming the media and start having an honest assessment of the quality of their candidate and the way he has been presented.
    
    Bringing up the Bill Clinton stuff was a mistake. The accusations against him have been around for years and his name was dragged through the mud back then. Not many in the media are going to be interested in rehashing old controversies.
    
    As for Hillary herself, the case against her has gone so far down the conspiratorial rabbit hole that any genuine criticisms of her are getting lost in the noise.

    Just because more are joining trumps campaign on twit face et al does not mean he will get more votes when it counts in the election.
    We have already witnessed this effect with the self selecting polling after the first debate. Trump has masses of rabid supporters but they are not the ones who will decide the election.
    His fans flocked en mass to support him on online polls.
    We had many trumpets on here posting such polls and claiming a massive win for trump in the debate.
    Trumps decline actual scientific polling since then has shown that he actually lost the first debate by a wide margin.

Heard a guy on Newstalk ZB interviewing Our man for all reasons and seasons Prime Minister John Key. The know all interviewer had the temerity to question thye Prime Minister why the so called cap on immigration had been lowered. Knowall interviewer wanted it increased. Common sense says, if something was not done ,the escalating costs on our infrastructure,was almost out of control.That includes Hospital,housing and welfare services. Just one case in point,average healthcare costs for parents sponsored by their children,is circa $5993 over three years,compared with the sponsoring migrant $2107.After 5 years the sponsored parents are then sucking off “social welfare benefits”.Yet the knowall big mouth on Newstalk ZB wants more immigrants,and took our Prime Minister to task for having the gall to reduce the immigration cap..

  It’s also a mistake to regard parents of skilled migrants as a pure expense.
  
  In addition to the capital they bring with them, they also contribute to the invisible economy providing support and child care to the skilled migrant, allowing them to become more productive. (that’s assuming they don’t get a job and pay taxes like every one else.)

  Hoskings wasn’t listening and was generalising the whole issue. He missed the point that the immigration cap had not been met in the last 10 years and if employers are still screaming out for skilled people then clearly they are not among the immigrants who want to come or the employers are not recruiting overseas well or not prepared to offer permanent jobs to immigrants who want to come.

  If you’re going to bring in immigrants then bring in immigrants who will help add value to the economy.
  
  Just bringing in people to make up numbers is not helpful. Those people need to grow the economy so that it can pay for infrastructure etc.
  
  We don’t need people who need state housing or hand outs (including WFF). We need people wo will help give the country a boost.
  
  Disclaimer: I’m an immigrant. Been here 24 years. Added a lot of value in that time. Never been on welfare (not even WFF).

      One Somali medical grad out of how many and how long? Tens of thousands maybe in over 20 years? How is that doing well as a group?

      Meanwhile many other countries including China have had civil wars, yet the people coming from China have very good outcomes. Huge numbers of Chinease medical grads.

      Let’s also face it that IQ is a huge factor that nobody wants to talk about.
      
      Now to be very clear, I am not being racist because I am not judging individuals by their race. I think everyone should be judged on their own individual merit. The Somali medical grad sounds like a bright fellow. However the bitter truth is that he is far from representative of most Somalis.

        So are you suggesting that because you can find one Somali medical grad all Somailis are latent geniuses only supressed by racism?
        
        You need to get a basic grasp of statistics and the Bell Curve and link that with intelligence.
        
        If you take a population of people, most will be about average height and there will be some outliers the further you go from the average, the fewer the outliers are.
        
        Again. looking at height, you will see that various ethnicities have different bell curves: most Chinese are short; most East Africans are tall.
        
        That does not mean that ALL Chinese are short or ALL Kenyans are tall, but it does mean that you’re far more likely to find a 6ft 5 Kenyan than a 6ft 5 Chinese bloke.
        
        Finding a tall Chinese bloke (or a short Kenyan) does not disprove the general trend.
        
        It also means that if you throw open your borders to Chines (or Kenyans) then expect an influx of shorter (or taller) people.
        
        IQ is also just such a trait. You will likely have encountered it at school. Some kids were good at maths and such and some weren’t. We are not equally gifted. Nor is it equally distributed amongst ethnicities. Somalian people are pretty low on IQ as a population (average IQ 68), while East Asians (Chinese/Japanese) score very high 110 or so.
        
        And, just like height, IQ follows a bell curve within populations. There are some really bright Somali individuals (but they are incredibly rare) and there are some low-IQ Chinese individuals (but they are rare too).
        
        So I am not surprised to see a single Somali medical grad. I would however be surprised to see many but Somals in general are going to reduce the IQ of the nation.
        
        I think that we should be selective about who we attract into the country. It is better to attract people on an individual basis. Give me the bright Chinese people, the bright Somali people but let’s not just take everyone.
        
        If we selected on that basis we’d notice something though: there would be many Chinese and very few Somalis. That’s not racism. That’s just statistics.
        
        And, for the record, I could have gone to med school but chose to pursue other studies instead. I did hang out with a lot of medics at university so I know I could easily have made the grade.
        
        I do have a very high IQ, but I don’t see that to be anything particularly proud about. It is just a natural trait – like being short or tall or whatever. I’m no more proud about being high IQ than I am about being tall.

You can see why the homeless are living in cars and making out the Government is heartless as the cost to rent a state house is only 25% of your income and to rent a safe warm home with all the nice chattles is 60% of your income and you need references.Labour keep wanting to champion people that offer nothing to NZers over people that give all to achieve for their family’s

I was very impressed with Winston on Q + A yesterday. He has to hold back policy as National will grab it – police numbers and immigration. Otherwise he would be polling higher. He will have over 15% on election night. Will John Key agree to the same rights for everyone regardless of race?

        ccm, That is possible. However, I think the type of legacy Winston would like to leave would include NZF carrying on. Another would be a binding referendum on the continuation of the racist Maori seats. That would be a far better legacy than Key’s flag referendum that did not fly.
        
        Winston is also in favour of a new independent body to bring justice to those wrongly convicted and jailed. Key does not believe such people need justice unless there are votes in it for him.

Just read Nate Silver’s state of the race update. Their model which takes all the polls and adjusts them for their historical accuracy and also adds in some other factors such as the state of the economy has Clinton ahead by about 7%. He says that is outside polling error but if Trump can get the gap to about 4% he will be within the margin of error given the number of undecideds this time around. The third debate will be important for him.

Issues for Trump are:
He seems to have gone even madder ( drug testing?)
Undecideds did not break for him in the Republican primary and maybe less likely to do so in the general.
Clinton is supposed to have the best ground game. No evidence of the effectiveness of this yet but if Trump is counting on the GOP, going to war with them in a state like Ohio wont help.

Clinton has more money.

The WikiLeaks drip feed may help Trump. If Mosul falls before the election that might help Clinton.

At this stage there is about equal probability of a close election or Clinton winning Texas.

To be honest, I don’t see what the attraction is of voting Hillary Clinton. She has a history of corruption; of getting millions of dollars for doing political favours. Others say she has the experience, but as Secretary of State she accomplished nothing. She was pretty much useless. She touted the so-called “reset” with Russia with the infamous red button photo shoot. Look how that turned out. We’re almost back to Cold War status with Russia. She let four men die in Benghazi and lied about the cause of it. Her team are complaining about Russia hacking their email when it was probably Hillary’s own unsecured home-brew server that was hacked. She deleted 33,000 of her emails after they were subpoenaed.

What reason on earth would people have for voting for her? Because she would be the first person with a vagina to hold the office? Look how well the novelty of the “first ever” black person to be president panned out; not so well. I can’t see that she offers anything, to be honest.

The media has based this whole election on demonizing Trump. On the issues, Hillary has nothing to offer. And let’s not forget that the Democrat party is the party of racism, of segregation, of slavery, of the KKK, of abortion. They really have little to offer.

I saw a documentary on Netflix using hidden filming in Saudi Arabia. They have public squares where beheadings and whippings are carried out, even with special drains to wash away the blood. All is not going well for the Saudi regime though as thanks to modern technology the people are beginning to rebel. Whenever we fill our vehicles with petrol it is sobering to know that thanks to our generosity the Saudis have spent $70 billion in exporting Islam to the world; much in the building of mosques and schools. No doubt lots of dollars have been used to bribe politicians.

When he was alive, Billy Graham used to do it for Republicans (and the Watergate tapes revealed him swapping anti-Semitc remarks with Nixon), so I guess Dobson is his replacement. Jesse Jackson is the go-to for Democrats, although it would seem he is being increasingly superseded by the loathsome Al Sharpton .
    
    It is almost a total con, of course, more just for show, and to benefit each party – the candidate is seen to tick the “religion” box and gets an endorsement from the religious figurehead (do endorsements still count, btw?), while the adviser gains kudos and perceived influence.
    
    If the candidate was really interested in spiritual advice, then they would have a regular and on-going relationship with a local church. I think Hillary Clinton does (Methodist, I believe), which in its own way would shape her politics

They would be happy to see anyone in the Whitehouse regardless of character, competence or even mental stability if they promise to appoint conservative judges. That is probably why the GOP senators refused to consider Garland. They want the court to be an issue that gets out the vote for them.
    
    This might all stem from partisan paralysis in Washington. It is really only the court that can actually do anything.

      waiporo-I agree with you about the Supreme Court. That is a really big issue for evangelicals because a Supreme Court loaded with liberals would continue to usurp the will of the people and hand down by judicial fiat whatever liberal policies the Progressives want.
      
      The politicisation of the court by the Democratic liberals has been a disgrace. The Constitution is not actually a living document as they maintain. It was an attempt by the founders of the republic to lock in certain principles. If you had said to the founders that everything you write will be reinterpreted in the light of the 21st-century liberal progressive agenda they wouldn’t have agreed to a constitution in the first place.
      
      What the liberal progressives cannot achieve at the ballot box they try to achieve by stealth through the judicial system. Judges elected by Hillary Clinton will hold office in the Supreme Court for decades. That right there is a good reason why conservatives should never vote for Clinton.

    You are right stephieboy in that we cannot be certain of Donald Trump’s support for abortion although he has campaigned that he would protect the dignity of the unborn child and that he would appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court thereby protecting also the dignity of the unborn child. He has even released 2 lists of those judges which even the never Trump website National review online has agreed is a good list of conservative judges.
    
    But as usual you are dead wrong on your other point. Hillary Clinton will do everything she can to advance the abortion agenda and in doing this she is with her predecessor Barack Obama who has never voted on any piece of legislation to provide any limits on abortion whatsoever. Even when he was a state senator he was the only senator that voted against the born alive Bill which would provide protection for foetuses that were born alive and survived the abortion procedure.
    
    Make no mistake Hillary Clinton is an abortion extremist and the Democratic party is the party of abortion on demand with no limitations whatsoever. Abortion is another religion for them.
    
    A vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for millions of more dead babies. That’s a brutal way of putting it but sadly it is also true.

A good write up on game one, that seems to suggest the Cubs are indeed in a season of destiny, and the reson is they are very good and they don’t care about the past – they are going to grab victory/smash down the door whenever the chance presents itself – as the Red Sox did in 2004.   It was a very cool moment and although the Dodger’s manager lost out on the decision I was impressed by how ballsy it was.
  
  Still, I’m damned if I would have loaded the bases just to force Chapman and his pitches out of the next inning. The grand slam was a bonus but I felt sure the Cubs would get one run home in that situation. I also think Chapman is now being oversold and if the Dodgers think about it they’ll realise that in two situations now – one with the Giants and one yesterday – he has been hit, 100mph pitches or not. I’d have squared up to him again, especially if they’d only fallen behind by one run. The guy needs to throw a few sliders: putting a fastball in all the time will see him found out sooner or later.
  
  But yeah – great, great moment. I must have replayed the damned thing half-a-dozen times last night. The thing was that Montero swung and missed at a high slider the pitch before. I groaned because it looked fat and juicy over the plate and I thought it would not happen again. And then the Dodger’s pitcher threw the exact same pitch again. I knew it was gone the moment Montero hit it.
  
  But I did think the Dodger manager’s claim that this shows the Cubs can be beaten was bullshit stuff, since the Dodgers have already beaten them – last month in their final season series! And they looked solid doing it to. They’re a tough side and today they have one of the best starting pitchers in baseball, Clayton Kershaw, to nail the Cubs down. He’s done it before.
  
  Should be a great game in Wrigley: the Dodgers will be desperate not to go two down. Only trouble is I have some duties to do that mean I may miss the first hour.

  And Kershaw is looking even better than his record would suggest. Four innings of pretty much up and down on the batters. Not a lot of pitches per inning and he works them fast an efficiently. Weird mechanics though. Can’t see the Cubs getting a hit off him tonight – although they have got bat on ball, they just haven’t carried.
  
  For the Cubs, Hendricks has looked very good too – but not as overwhelming as Kershaw.
  
  Looks like it will come down to the batters vs. the bullpens.

The current media spin is that the election is already in the bag for Hillary with her enjoying leads of about 7 points in the polls. Trump fills stadiums, while she half fills hotel conference suites. They were neck and neck in the polls a fortnight ago. It is hard to imagine that the nonsense currently being raised in the media could have caused such a swing. Especially when Trump destroyed Hillary in the last debate. If the Russians really want Trump then they could put some effort into fabricating a really damning and difficult to disprove email to be released 1 or 2 days before the election when it would have maximum impact.

It is unsurprising that having a black man and woman as President should come as something traumatic for white race man.

It took a civil war to end owning black men from Africa as slaves, and then another century and the civil rights movement to grant political empowerment. That the former property of the white man should not just have the right to vote, but exercise it to elect a black man or woman as POTUS, is a substantive change to the word of God ordered world of the patriarchy of European Christendom.

And it is not one that the Puritans of the Mayflower were intending to depart from when they moved to the New World. Sure they rejected the imperial church and the national church, but only because they had their own version of word of God order in mind for their own equally intolerant godly communities.

Burn the witch Killary indeed, cannot have a woman on top can we. Not when white men were counting the days till the black man left.

I’d happily vote for a black guy (such as Elbert Guillory, Alan West, Ben Carson) or a woman, as long as they had good ideas to improve the country, along with morals and common sense. Neither Obama or Hillary have those qualities; in fact, one of Hillary’s main traits is that she has no morals. Hillary is not in the race for what she can do for America. She’s in the race for what she can suck out of America for her own enrichment. It’s all about her – always has been. Why do you expect that she has a different motive now? She’s a corrupt woman who thinks that the rules do not apply to her. She scorns those who think differently and goes off on a short fuse when confronted. She’d make an awful president.

      I don’t think so. If we each have our own personal faith and ethical standards and yours differs from mine then whose should we appeal to? The law is already faith-based in a way (the law against murder is based on the sixth commandment). I once read an ex-atheist Christian challenging some people on an atheist forum, and an atheist questioned why murder should be wrong. The Christian replied that there really isn’t a reason, apart from God saying that it is wrong.
      
      Here is the interesting exchange (Christian ex-atheist answers in bold) –

      There is no other reason why this should be considered to be a good commandment. None. Zilch. Try to logical prove that killing is morally wrong. You will fail. Other than the reality of a god who declares killing to be morally wrong, there is no logically compelling reason for us to believe it is wrong.
      
      Oddly, if you do answer this question, you’ll have to do so by justifying a moral value without reference to God, which you’ve claimed you can’t do. (Before you get offended, I actually suspect you can answer this question – which is pretty much my point. If you have to, prove me wrong by saying you still don’t know why murder is wrong, but I do hope you’re a better person than that.)

I could be honest and say that it emotionally upsets me, but I always choose reason over my emotions. If our lives have no inherent purpose or value, we are only kidding ourselves when we establish the facade of morality.

        No one, simply delineate personal morality from law – personal morality where there is consent, law where there is no consent. Where there is no consent then there is law.
        
        Placing law into areas where there is consent is interference, imposed morality one on another.

What is law, then, if not the legislation of moral opinions? Every time a law is made, it becomes an imposition of one group’s opinion upon another’s.
        
        When we throw a person in jail because he has robbed a house, he is being imprisoned because of another man’s opinion that stealing is wrong. Once again, the opinion in question concerns a subjective reality and is, therefore, purely subjective and a matter of preference. Our entire justice system becomes illusory. In order for our justice system to have credibility, it has to be based on an authority that exceeds the mere opinion of men. But with a God who establishes morality as an objective reality, we are no longer dealing with the opinions of man’s preference, but the opinions of men concerning God’s preference.

  As I see it, Hillary has been tried, and failed miserably. She was utterly useless as Secretary of State. Why do you think she’d do better this time? And in a higher office? At least, with Trump, he may be a bit of an unknown but we may as well give him a chance. I believe that he actually does love America and wants to fix it, whereas Hillary is happy to suck it dry and wipe her muddy feet all over it, just like she’d do with the Office of president.
