Thought I would leave you with some summer reading. Here’s a YouTube video of a talk in a San Francisco bookshop by one David Satter, a Russian-speaking, longtime observer of Russia who has lived there in Soviet and modern times.

One part of the talk specifically dealt with the strange series of apartment bombings in Russia in 2000 as the Yeltsin government was coming to a close, events that greatly aided the already fast-rising Putin in becoming President. Andrei claimed that Satter’s claims and attacks on Putin and his cronies was a conspiracy theory!, which I think is weird, given that blame could easily be laid at the foot of Yeltsin cronies looking for a way to avoid the fallout from their corruption in the 1990’s.

So here’s the video, and you can judge for yourself the credibility of the man and his claims. I’ve added a transcript for the key portion dealing with the bombings, which starts at 22:36 in:

The Russian officials said there’s a Chechen trail in the bombings. Three hundred people blown up in the middle of the night, while they slept. But the wording was interesting itself: it said Chechen trail? No proof! Where’s the proof? But that trail, that so-called trail, was enough to begin the second Chechen War, which was even more bloody than the first Chechen war and which elevated Putin overnight into the national savior.

All talk about reversing the results of privatization, punishing the people who were responsible for the pillaging the country, settling with the Yeltsin entourage, was quickly forgotten as the country united behind the decisive, young leader who was going to avenge this attack by terrorists who were so cruel as to blow up ordinary people in their own homes.

Putin’s popularity skyrocketed and he was elected President – and with the overwhelming approval and support, I must add, of the international community, including the United States, and without any questions.

He strikes me as a fairly typical centre-Leftist who was not fooled by Soviet Communism but who was very unhappy about the neoliberal corruption of Russia that occurred under Yeltsin – corruption that is condemned by many Putin supporters – and who is not exactly impressed with the West!

But there was one incident, and this would have been actually quite successful, but the FSB is not the KGB – and I tell you this as one who has known both of them.

The FSB, for all their brutality, is a little short on competence, and they made a critical mistake, because there was a fifth bomb. A fifth bomb was placed in a basement in the city of Ryazan, on the night of September 22nd and it was discovered, unlike the other bombs, and it was tested and it was disarmed.

All of Ryazan was cordoned off, no one could enter or leave, and that included the railway stations, the airport, the roads. Every window in the city was plastered with a composite sketch of the bombers, who were seen by local residents, and they were captured.

A telephone operator overheard a telephone conversation that seemed to her very suspicious on the inter-urban line. In those days – this was long enough ago that they still were making calls through operators in some parts of Russia.

In any case, the person on the line said that, “they’ve got the whole city surrounded. How do we get out of here?, and the person on the other end of the line said, “split up and get out one by one”.

The operator was sure she was listening in on the terrorists. She gave the number to the local police, who were not clued in as to what was happening. They called the number. Turned out to be the central headquarters of the FSB.

Very incompetent. But it gets better:

Hours later they arrest the terrorists. They produced FSB documents. So this created a problem, and the head of the FSB got on national television and said I want to congratulate the residents of Ryazan. This was a test of vigilance. Congratulations. You did a brilliant job in demonstrating your vigilance. They even organized a ceremony in which they gave a new color television set to the operator. Only in Russia can something like that happen. All very funny of course – but the entire district had been cordoned off. Everyone had spent the night on the street.

Sounds like an episode of Blackadder!. Here is a video documentary exploring all this, and the TV coverage of the FSB head is seen there at 16:00, followed by a spokesman for the FSB months later on TV saying that it was an exercise. But back to Satter’s talk:

It is a tribute to the unwillingness to know and to face the truth – that no one raised this issue. Not the US. Not Europe. Russian society, Russian civil society was disorganized. A war was going on in Chechnya. A new election was coming up.

And despite efforts to ask, well what are you talking about, who put that bomb in the building? It was successfully covered up, Putin was elected President and the whole incident was all but forgotten, except for a few people who continued to investigate and formed a committee to find out the truth about the Ryazan incident.

Of those people I was in contact with almost everyone. And I myself decided that this is just unbelievable, and I went to Ryazan and I talked to people. I talked to the Police. I talked to the residents of the building that was supposed to be blown up. And there was no one who believed that this was a training exercise. And there was no evidence to support the idea that this was training exercise.

On the contrary, the gas analyzer which tested the bomb, tested positive for hexagen, the high explosive used in the other bombings. The detonator was photographed and time-stamped, and it was a real live military detonator. There was really no doubt that this was no training exercise. This was an attempt to bomb the building, and the building had three hundred residents, and it was on a hill, just above another building with three hundred residents. Had it been blown up it would have hit the neighboring building with the force of an avalanche, carrying away six hundred lives.

It didn’t happen, thank God. But that didn’t interfere with the regime’s plans, because the next day they began bombing Grozny.

A number of the investigators Satter worked with are now dead, some murdered, some in ‘accidents’, as he wrote about here in National Review.

Perepilichny jogged through a neighborhood of homes once owned by Elton John, Kate Winslet, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr.

He collapsed on Granville Road, within 100 meters of the house he was renting for $20,000 a month. Police and medics were called to the scene, but within 30 minutes, Perepilichny was pronounced dead.

Police told the press the death was “unexplained.” A 44-year-old man of average build and above-average wealth had simply fallen down and died in the leafy suburb he’d recently begun calling home.

The number of prominent, connected Russians who have died in such strange ways – ways not usual for crime syndicate killings – is quite large, and still growing. But strangely enough, the people who regularly quote Russia Today, Sputnik, Veterans Today, theSaker and other such news sites – and who seem to love this sort of stuff – are nowhere to be found on these issues.

      Yes – nothing about the Clinton’s suggest they’re lawless at all.
      
      Nothing about Bill’s extensive history of abusing young women and lying about it (“Ah did not have secshual relaytions with that woman”) Never happened.
      
      Hillary never played fast and loose with her nation’s national security by setting up a private email server and taking months and months to release the emails when subpoenaed. Never happened.
      
      Never engaged professional agitators to disrupt Trump events – nope that didn’t happen either.
      
      Never lied to the American people – at all, not once – remember the Hillary “I remembered arriving in Bosnia under gunfire” (except there wasn’t any – or if there was – the little girls handing over the flowers didn’t seem to mind).
      
      No problem at all with Clinton struggling to accept the election result in exactly the way she criticised Trump for (oh the irony of that one). Nope – and she had no problem conceding the election when it was clear the race was over – didn’t even think about sending the liar Podesta out to lie. No she’s a straight up individual.
      
      Nothing wrong with Clinton’s whole campaign being funded by foreign powers – because those powers were only interested in what was best for ordinary, decent Americans. Nope – not a problem with that for the Clintons.
      
      If any or even some of those things that didn’t happen noted above – had happened, then you’d have to say the Clintons were indeed capable of anything in their pursuit of power – including the staggering level of coincidence required for so many individuals doing good journalistic work (when the corrupt MSM won’t) investigating the Clintons – to die in such odd circumstances!
      
      Maybe you don’t believe Nixon was guilty (after all he wasn’t convicted either)!

Heard the unhinged knowall, a clown known as Barely Sober, commenting on Bill English’s ,new cabinet arrangements. Barely Sober seemed completely upset that the new arrangements didnt match his forecasts. Maybe it is time the knowall hung up his waste of space comments, and did something useful ,maybe even get a real job, or even stand for parliament,as he seems to think he knows how to run a Government. Truth is Barely Sober couldnt run a bath,he could even start his own party in combination with the other ratbag from Radio Live Duncan Garner. What a comedy act they would be,two clowns.

        Actually, Rodney Randall is talking sense, and the Kiwiblog consensus is disgracing itself, on this specific issue.
        
        The Unitary Plan will NOT result in housing affordability being restored any time until after an actual crash. It won’t even result in appreciable housing supply. Arthur Grimes nailed the problem in a 2010 paper, when the land supply is rationed, “all the profit potential from redevelopment is impounded in rising site values”. This is why decades of Urban Plans in Pommy cities has always resulted in ever-increasing shortfalls in actual houses being built, regardless of how much more generous the planners thought they were being with their upzonings. Upzonings as a conduit for “increased housing supply” are a guaranteed failure; the distortions from constraining greenfields supply, even allegedly “liberally”, always kneecaps intensification as well.
        
        The fastest-intensifying cities in the USA and probably the whole first world, happen to be ones that are also expanding the fastest horizontally, land values are anchored, and the market functions properly according to REAL economic evolution and demand for space.

        Sufficiently liberalised land supply actually would have to be like not having a Plan at all that explicitly rationed the supply of ex-fringe greenfields land.

        It is interesting that my recollections from debating this topic online years ago, are that a real argument would get stirred up every time; there were defenders of the housing situation (it was a crisis long ago) who had their favourite opinions. It is nothing to worry about, the boomers ‘ad it tough too in their day with high interest rates; affordability is just as good now because of low interest rates; low interest rates are to blame, not the urban planners; immigrants are to blame, not the urban planners; “rampant free markets” are to blame, not the urban planners – etc, etc etc.
        
        Coming back here years later, it is interesting that no argument occurs any more, just anonymous downticks of anyone pointing out the now-monstrously undeniable reality, like in the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes. The breakthrough to widespread acknowledgement of the reality just hasn’t come yet.
        
        I am not a single-issue nutter, old KB-ers will know I am a bit of a polymath; but that does not mean I don’t see housing as the single biggest c*ckup committed by the National Party in its entire history. It will have terrible consequences one day, and I sincerely hope the delusion and denial does not survive that reckoning; otherwise the repetition of the cycle we have created will finish our economy off even if the first one or two cycles didn’t quite.
        
        KB is actually a bit of an outlier on this, showing what an “establishment National” organ it has become. There are enlightened people out there, of which Rodney Randall is an obvious example – and they are justifiably pi**ed off after all these years of squandered opportunity, and the monster that the bubble has been allowed to grow into. The size of it that was Helen Clark’s fault (circa 2006-2008), was bad enough and would have been painful enough to unwind.

        Actually Bill English was right on the nail when he said a few years ago, “we can’t stand by and let a bunch of planners in an office in Auckland wreck the macro-economy”.
        
        It actually is that bad. Whoever conveyed that reality to Bill, is a good man. But the economic mechanisms by which the macroeconomy is wrecked are too complex for a general-purpose blog like KB. It is not just a social equity issue – I am economically libertarian, so I am not using terminology like this, like a lefty would. I see that in this case, central planning is responsible for destroying the good that free markets do – look at the affordability of most “produced” items for most people over time; well, that included housing for several decades, until the central planning Empire struck back under the guise of saving the planet from developers.

Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[e] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. Divorce

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Oaths

Eye for Eye

Love for Enemies

  Except they don’t because there is a lag:
  1) Christians are not, well, making more Christians.
  2) Lots of Christians (especially in the West) are older people who are going to die in the next 10-15 years.
  
  On top of that less and less people who identify as Christians in a census are actually “functional Christians” whereas many more Muslims are “functional Muslims”…. or to put it another way: Lots of Catholics use condoms, very few Muslims eat bacon.
  
  That means we’re seeing an effective dilution of Christianity because Christian are only about 50% as religious as Muslims.
  
  So if we apply a 50% scaling factor to account for that then Islam is already the dominant religion.

      In the UK one of the largest Health Service problems now comes from the interfamily relationships continuing within the close ghettos of the Muslims communities.
      Young girls as soon as they reach puberty are expected to continue to breed as often as possible often within a very short timeframe.
      Who they breed with is irrelevant – brothers, cousins and uncles – any male.
      Consanguinity as it is correctly called has historically over many hundreds of years has caused mental problems throughout the world.
      It is possibly what causes the madness of the so called warriors in the Middle East today and back to include the early European Royal families in the UK.
      This interrelationship within the Euro Muslims can only get worse as more generations of children are born with more and more serious mental problems.
      In the UK the Hospitals cannot cope with the increasing burden of children born into these circumstances.

    There conclusions that Muslims are breeding more and growing in number is clearing explained.

And here’s a more geopolitical take on some of the coup plotters…

On the home front, the Neocons have resorted to every possible dirty trick on the book to try to prevent Donald Trump from ever getting into the White House: they have

organized riots and demonstrations (some paid by Soros money)
encouraged the supporters of Hillary to reject the outcome of the elections (“not my President”)
tried to threaten the Electors and make them either cast a vote for Hillary or not vote at all
tried to convince Congress to refuse the decision of the Electoral College and
they are now trying to get the elections annulled on the suspicion that the (apparently almighty) Russian hackers have compromised the election outcome (apparently even in states were paper ballots were used) and stolen it in favor of Trump.
That is truly an amazing development, especially considering how Hillary attacked Trump for not promising to recognize the outcome of the elections…

…ost experts agree that none of these tactics are going to work. So this begs the question of whether the Neocons are stupid, whether they think that they can succeed or what their true objective is.

My guess is that first and foremost what is taking place now is what always happens when the Neocons run into major trouble: they double down, again.

And again. And again. That is one of the key characteristics of their psychological make-up: they cannot accept defeat or, even less so, that they were wrong, so each time reality catches up to their ideological delusions, they automatically double-down…

They’re idiots. Evil idiots actually. Which is why I dislike them intensely. It’s not because they’re Israel-firsters. Der. It’s because they’re those two things.

On Wednesday night, NBC released a report, in collusion with a myriad of anonymous sources reputed to be inside the CIA and other intelligence agencies, claiming that Vladimir Putin personally directed the destruction of Hillary Clinton via hacking hers and the DNC’s servers before the US presidential election…

…The report does not cite any source by name for its information, other than incorrigible moron Micheal McFaul, one time US ambassador to Russia, as a cheerleader for the report.

I must stress, this is an incredible direct accusation against the President of Russia, which has the potential to provoke both international and domestic crises which could quickly spiral out of control. This is far, far beyond reckless.

Rather than keeping their heads down for the next four years, even trying to exercise some subtle influence on the president’s decisions, these infantile flunkies within the CIA and mass media have thrown themselves into the open in this last ditch desperate attack which definitively condemns them to the president-elect’s coming wrath.

They apparently have no idea that they have just kicked open a hornets’ nest.

Donald J. Trump does not take prisoners. He will not forgive, or forget. And the massacre coming to halls of Langley and to anybody and anywhere else in the executive branch involved in this is going to beggar belief.

Trump, who was a protege of the infamously ruthless attorney Roy Cohn, has made it very clear over the years how he deals with his enemies. In “Think Big” he detailed how to handle traitors:

“I always get even…I go out of my way to make [their] life miserable.”

“When somebody screws you, screw them back in spades” and “Go for the jugular so that people watching will not want to mess with you.”

In “The Art of the Comeback” Trump wrote:

“I believe in an eye for an eye — like the Old Testament says.”

“Some of the people who forgot to lift a finger when I needed them, when I was down, they need my help now, and I’m screwing them against the wall. I’m doing a number…. And I’m having so much fun.”

John F. Kennedy famously threatened to “smash the CIA into a thousand pieces.” But ultimately, the 35th president lost his solitary battle to completely break the power of the deep state.

Though I respect Kennedy, I believe Donald Trump is a much more serious proposition.

Donald Trump is Michael Corleone. He will keep his friends close, and his enemies closer (including the likes of John Bolton). But those he doesn’t keep closer, he will ruthlessly “screw against the wall” for targeting him.

The no-nonsense Mike Pompeo, Trump’s nominee for CIA director, will be the hatchet man for this merciless house cleaning operation.

Come January 20th, the reckoning begins.

Let’s get ready to rumble.

75 years ago today:
HMS Neptune, which was intended to join the RNZN, was lost in the Mediterranean after striking a minefield off Tripoli. All 150 New Zealanders aboard perished, as it was too hazardous for other ships to be risked n the minefield. A single survivor from the complement of 750 men was picked up by the Italians 12 days later.
This was our Navy’s greatest single loss of life during the war.

  I suspect more of us have heard of the torpedoing of the American heavy cruiser Indianapolis at the end of the Pacific War. Its loss of lives, similar to that of the Neptune, was, according to Wikipedia, “the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. ”
  
  The sinkings of Neptune and Indianapolis both led to the slow, cruel deaths of survivors lingering for days in the expectation of rescue.
  
  I’m puzzled why the Neptune disaster has received such scant attention from the New Zealand MSM over the last seven and a half decades.

Drivers in Mangere may have been a bit perplexed on Sunday to see a swing set travelling down the street, propped on a car.

A photo doing the rounds on Facebook shows the vehicle with a child’s swing set frame set across the roof, with either side of the frame hanging down on either side and the swing dangling next to the driver’s window.

The photos are definitely worth a look…

Mother – Delusional: claims to converse with people who can fly. Behaviour possibly an indication of prolonged narcotics use.
Father – Absent/Unknown.
Step Father – Of limited IQ. Does not understand where babies come from. Seems unperturbed about his wife’s obvious infidelity.

Living Conditions – The family reside in a dilapidated out-building and the child was found sharing the accommodation with a number of animals.
The place was dirty and un-heated.
The parents were throwing wild parties and had invited all the local shepherds round (not a suitable environment for a baby).
During our inspection, three mature gentlemen approached the parents with very expensive gifts – we are concerned about their motives, several paedophile rings operate in this area.
