Who has been reminded by the children already today how many sleeps it is to go?

Mine are long gone and I write this from a desk looking at the gathering cloud in Mt Wellington until 1200 which then becomes barbie, banger and a beer! (singular)

Mastercard loves Christmas, but we know Christmas is for family. Who can forget the excitement that it brings for the little ones; priceless.

  It is difficult to change habits and culture but you are correct. February would be the best time to go on holiday. Of course you can still be washed away any time in New Zealand.
  
  The stand out benefit of February in New Zealand is water temperature, especially in the North Island. Water is much warmer in February than in January.

Consumers to be protected from “loan sharks” this Christmas? that was on Newstalk ZB news. Does that mean banks and department stores are also culpable,are exempt, with their usurious out of control interest rate charges,on credit cards,department stores. Interest rate charges are circa 22% to 27% .Yet the mentioned seemed to escape being called” Loan Sharks”.

    Well Tauhei that is the banks for you. They charge the high credit card interest rate. In NZ thanks to the sell offs circa 1990 94% of the profits go offshore.
    
    …and banks and pokies..the big banks were playing the pokies with OPM pre 2008 and then needed OPM money (Thanks taxpayer UK/US) for the bail out so they could stay in business and keep on charging high rates on these C/cards as interest rates plummeted. (OPM = other people’s money)
    
    Complete the circle. These low IQ people would struggle on a level playing field and yet in the last 40 years western governments have paid out so these ‘lesser intelligence ‘ people can keep on breeding. WFF is a transfer payment to lower earners with kids who may not afford it otherwise.
    
    In NZ it is an industry. A significant industry that if I cared to read Fairfax and Ferald one sided stories I could derive morbid entertainment. Simon Collins writes some of these and should know – his own wife’s daughter was collecting DPB while living with the boyfriend.
    The media defends this position – on whose behalf though?
    
    So the taxpayer pays for these low IQs to breed (dumb bastards as you call them TN ) even though there is no way they can support the kids.
    Which provides more low IQ fodder for banks, casinos and pokie machine owners to exploit.

    Sometimes I am not so sure who the dumb bastards really are.
    The ones who fund all this via their taxes or the ones who get free money for food, booze, drugs, tattoos, fags and often could not pass a drug test in order to get a job if their clouded mind could suggest such a silly idea.
    The high interest rates are often not paid from money they earned in the first place, just money given to them because they exist. Similarly with their unpaid fines.
    
    It is not just direct benefit payments that facilitate this but WFF, free doctor visits, food provided in schools; rent supplement; WINZ grants and many other forms of assistance.
    
    High interest rates and loan sharks are just one element of a large transfer infrastructure.

Merry Christmas to DPF his partner and the new little person in his life and to all the posters at KB even the ones who have downticked me this year.

For LMS 2016 has been a great year personally and also politically. He has seen the elites and the Left put in their place by Brexit and Trump although in both cases some of the Left still dont get it that they were rejected totally.

PC and CS bullshit is ended with the common sense citizen now able to resume normal transmission after years of being terrorised by the Left.

All in all a good year with 2017 set to be even better as the Nats triumph once again.

I like to think I am a reasonably-intelligent individual. So when I downloaded Ad Blocker some years ago I did so knowing what the words ‘Ad Blocker’ meant.

Cue Whale Oil.

Now, when you look at a story there, up pops an evil red box OVER the text you are trying to read that tells you:

We get it. You hate ads. The great thing is we have an ad-free subscription etc etc etc.

Occasionally I read the odd one just to see if their tune has changed… it never has!     It is a two-way street. Commenters add as much – and sometimes more – value than the original poster.
    
    Even though I had many posts with huge upticks I still got shanked when I called one of the monkey-guy’s posts sick. A plane had been lost from tracking but then came back again. He had said it was disappointing that it didn’t turn into a news story. I said I thought it was sick that someone would want a story more than they worry about people’s lives. Banned.
    
    That sort of sensitivity just makes you into an echo chamber . Cutting yourself off from feedback is never a good thing for the long run.

      I’ve modded on Chat sites and thus know how quickly some folk react badly to criticism/mutes/bans – but a cursory look by the WhaleOil mod at posts I had made would have shown that, by and large, I was a sweet, kind, fairly intelligent, untroublesome, non-abusive, angelic, modest sort of soul. What’s to have stopped them saying, maybe via mail, ‘Lookety, Bisc, we dislike this criticism because (x)’ But, no, not even a ‘Gulp! We erred! But did you hvae to be so cruel?’, just a blanket ban – which simply makes them look petty.
      
      I see cmm uses thre word ‘fukkem’.

  Totally agree, Angela Merkel saw the picture of the little boy who drowned while trying to emigrate to Europe. From there she seems to have lost her mind. You can’t base your whole foreign policy and immigration policy on one child who drowns trying to emigrate to Europe. She took 1 million refugees who since then have repaid her kindness by engaging in criminal activity up to and including rape.
  
  Now one of her much loved refugees has driven a lorry through her own citizens! And she was trying to get them trained as lorry drivers??
  
  At the next election can the good people of Germany rise up and elect someone who will actually defend the country and put in place a sane immigration policy? They will be doing themselves a favour and actually doing Angela Merkel a favour. Because she has completely lost it. Germany needs a new leader urgently.

So Kiwirail is buying diesel locomotives to replace the existing electric locomotives. This means the Palmerston N to Te Rapa electrification would be ‘mothballed’ but accordingly to Sue Moroney that would cost $3M per year to prevent theft of the copper conductors. It seems to make sense from Kiwirail’s perspective as purchasing ‘standard issue’ diesel narrow gauge locomotives would be significantly cheaper than custom built electric locomotives and there are operational advantages such as not having to change locomotives for through trains.
This means that three of the five railway electrification schemes will have been abandoned (Lyttelton and Otira tunnels being the other two).
It also means that nearly all of the early 1980’s Muldoon/ Birch ‘think big’ projects have ‘failed’, exceptions being Taranaki methanol production (the synthetic petrol aspect never really took off) and Tiwai Smelter expansion which is ‘under a cloud’.
It makes me wonder whether the central North Island railway electrification project was over-egged to start with. It was claimed to be necessary to allow tonnage capacity on the line to be increased to meet allegedly increasing demand presumably because electric locomotives could haul heavier trains on the uphill sections as they had more energy available than diesels. This was in turn driven by strict laws requiring long haul freight to go by rail. Coastal shipping was effectively not an option having been almost killed off by militant unionism. It was also the only ‘think big’ project that struck a chord with Greenies and the general public. Arguably Rogernomics killed off some rail demand increases with the removal of restrictions on long distance trucking.
Perhaps the new diesel locomotives will be more powerful and modern technology means that they can be also placed at the rear or even in the middle and ‘talk’ to each other.
So in retrospect the centre North Island railway electrification should never have happened – it was born out of a Communist style command and control structure imposed on long haul freight transport.

  The basic “systems analysis” reality is this.
  
  Transport modes have their own advantages and disadvantages. Road’s advantage is flexibility and low costs of operational sites.
  
  Rail has the advantage over road, that a heavy load in motion is far more energy efficient. “The market” is necessary to sort out, via price signals, whether the advantages of road or the advantages of rail, are going to work for any particular customer and consignment on a given day.
  
  Anti-road Greens tend to be fixated on the energy-efficiency of the laden vehicle in movement; being irredeemably stupid about real life and economics, they are incapable of understanding that there is a “whole system” needing assessment, and the complexity is so great that market price signals are really the only decider.
  
  But interestingly, waterborne transport is more efficient than rail, on the criteria that rail-loving Greens focus on. The siting of railway stations and the inflexibility of the handling process is slightly less limited than with coastal shipping, but NZ has the unique advantage, if only we understood it, that almost all of it, especially in economic terms, is “near the sea” and even near a port.
  
  Rail would have more of a role if we were an elongated island nation with a large population, like Japan; but with the small population we have, we might as well just have coastal shipping, and roads. The rail system over its lifetime, has been a net burden to the economy (Dave Heatley, “The History and Future of Rail in NZ”).
  
  You are quite right that militant, economic-saboteur Unions ruined the potential for low-cost coastal shipping for decades.

    Electric trains are only “cleaner” when they run from hydro. What they failed to take into account is the concept of “marginal load”
    
    NZ gets about 80% of its electric power from renewables, the rest from coal and gas. The renewables are used to their maximum capacity and what is left is thus coal/gas.
    
    So when you add more electric trains you’re adding more load and thus causing more coal/gas to be burned. Likewise, when you reduce electricity consumption you reduce the amount of coal/gas that is burned.
    
    Thus any changes in train electricity consumption can be directly matched to burning coal.
    
    Changing from electricity to diesel is just changing from coal sourced power to diesel.
    
    Then of course we need to look at the efficiency of the process on an end-to-end basis too.
    
    Coal fired electriciy first starts off being mined as coal, then transported to the power station. It is then burned and steam is generated which then spins turbines and makes electricity. All those steps are inefficient and so far we’re probably less than 50% efficient. Then the power has to be converted to high voltage to go on the grid via transformers (more loss) then carried across power lines (more loss) and then down converted to rail voltages (more loss again). Then the actual motors themselves are lossy too.
    
    Once you’ve been through that there’s probably no efficiency difference between coal and diesel.
    
    Diesel does, however, provide a lot of advantages such as: doesn’t need extra infrastructure and doesn’t get knocked out by storms and power cuts.
    
    But, hey, who cares about analysis and logic when you’ve got an ideology to push…

    I think technological development influenced transport options. Original freight transport options were animals on terrible tracks or roads and boats or ships on natural waterways. Then came canals (which did not fit NZ). Then railroads (including trams) which held sway until decent high power internal combustion engines became available. Rail corridors (especially single track) could be built cheaper than road corridors despite the need to avoid excessive gradients. So rail had a ‘sweet spot’ for freight transport for the best part of 100 years. So rail became entrenched in countries like NZ and governments did not want to see the rail investment stranded and a further lot of investment in roads for high capacity freight. If viable road freight vehicles together with earthworking machinery had become available 40 years earlier then possibly much of the rail investment would not have been built. Another problem was the Public Works Department was responsible for railway building and (together with pro-works politicians) had little regard to the operational viability of railways being built. Some lines ran at a loss from day one let alone paying off capital costs but NZR (in its various forms) had to operate them and serve as a job creation and training agency (many mechanical trades people served apprenticeships in railway workshops).

        CMM short on history. Trucking was until 1986 i think completely dominated by the 40 mile rule. Not able to cart anything more than 4o miles. The game of course was to do just that without a latter day nazi catching you. There were minor exemptions such as perishables but you needed a license from some boring twat somewhere.
        Trucking now resembles nothing like trucking then.

      Rail trained a large number of the mechanical engineers where they had access to lots of equipment to learn on.
      
      P+T (Post and Telegraph) trained a lot of electrical engineers.
      
      These grads in NZCE and university quals-often with a bonding period and holiday jobs while at university- then took these skills out into the wider business sector as they moved on.
      
      Prior to 1980 the largest company was NZ Forest Products. Fletcher Challenge was only formed in 1981 and Hugh stuffed that within 2 decades.
      
      This was an important part of maturing an isolated low population country that is often overlooked.

  I’m a bit mystified about all this. The main trunk is also electrified from Wgtn. to Waikanae and Auck. to Pukekohe (or about to be). Seems not a huge job to electrify Waikanae to P. North and Pukekohe to Hamilton, thus future-proofing the commuter network at the same time as allowing freight trains to use the same locomotive for the whole trip.
  But I can also see the point of those who argue the huge capital cost of new custom-built electric locomotives,

    Unfortunately the economics just do not seem to stack up especially as it seems it is uneconomic to purchase replacement electric locos even though the infrastructure is in place. An added complication would be the ultimate need for dual voltage locos – 1500V DC/ 25kV AC (DC Wellington to Otaki or even PN and AC the rest of the way). The technology for this is ‘settled’ but this is an extra complication and expense.
    
    Perhaps Kiwirail thinks that if it retains the infrastructure for now, a future Labour/ Green government may be prepared to throw taxpayer money at new electric locos and some more electrification (Papakura – Te Rapa).

Chinese manufacturers can do prefabricated steel framed housing for around $100 per m2; 6 people can put up a 300m2 house in 3 days. That’s $30k for a big house, or $10k for a 100m2 3 bedroom place. Why doesn’t the Government just get a shipload of prefab housing and stick it up somewhere no-one uses, like the infield at Ellerslie racecourse, or some of the farmland at Cornwall Park? Problem solved by Christmas.

  Its not the houses that are the problem. Its providing them with electricity, water and taking away their shit that is the hard part. Councils (all of them) infrastructure has been run down over the years. Take Whanganui for instance. Sewer system is a mess and now the water pipes are failing (sprial welding). The River floods at will, and the roads rut and fail while the council spends millions on Arts and Crafts.

    Don’t have that on their own. Fortunately some serious flooding a few years back made our council get it’s shit together, ( No, I’ll take that back, ), they managed to get their storm water issues sorted but our shit dept. is a complete ballsup.
    A new pipeline has been installed from the growth area of The Lakes, $100 million dollars worth, but it ain’t connected after 3 years in the ground. Its a big bloody pipe too.
    
    Why, well because the twats that live in a council house downtown assumed they could just dig a hole through a paper road that belonged to the local Maori.
    They said “I don’t think so and went to court where they rightly won.
    So big lengths of pipe buried in the ground, pump stations all built but no pipe that any shit can flow through.
    
    Attempts at agreement seem to have fallen flat, the Council CEO (ex Wellington) won’t tell us (that’s us ratepayers who are paying for this), what’s happening.
    Accountablilty , just never happens but over park and they soon bloody find ya.
    Want money for art or new Waterfronts and its no problem. Want roads fixed or even considered for making useful with all our new traffic and its all just too fucking hard.
    I blame Helen. She was the one that encouraged all these arty farty socialist buggers in to councils.

  Steel framed in marine environment? Wouldn’t trust Chinese Galvanising. Up-side is that steel doesn’t absorb methamphetamine manufacturing residues. But still need to clad and finsih all interior and exterior surfaces at high cost (framing is very small proportion of overall build)
  
  Mass produced concrete tilt slab would be a better option – damage resistant, finished interior and exterior walls + wiring and plumbing conduits can be built in, as can insulation.

Ivanka trump posted some pics on Instagram of the inside of her house. Some of the photos showed framed abstract art that she has on her walls. Now the artist behind that art demands that she take it down and has got together with other artists and started a petition.

The Obama administration is formally tearing apart a national registry which was used to keep tabs on visitors from countries with terrorist groups, the Department of Homeland Security announced today. The National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (Nseers) was developed after 9/11 and was widely criticized as a way to unjustly track of Muslims and Arabs in the US. It was, in many ways, a relic of the former Bush administration’s “War on Terror.” The DHS stopped using the NSEERS registry in 2011 because it was “redundant, inefficient and provided no increase in security,” DHS spokesperson Neema Hakin told the New York Times.

With today’s announcement, the Obama administration is making sure that Donald Trump won’t be able to use the existing program as the basis for his so-called “Muslim registry.” That won’t stop Trump’s ambitions entirely, but it’ll make his anti-immigration promises much harder to fulfill. Over 80,000 people from 25 countries were pushed onto the NSEERS program, which required them to be fingerprinted, photographed and forced to attend periodic DHS interviews.

The news comes after tech workers from the likes of Google and Microsoft pledged that they would never build a Muslim registry for Trump. Yesterday, we also learned that Palantir, a data mining firm co-founded by Trump’s lone tech adviser Peter Thiel, is also helping the US Customs and Border Protection agency to track illegal immigrants (with a bit of help from NSEERS).

“I say English will drag Nats down to 45% by the end of Jan”

was totally wrong.

Silly me – I thought that it would take another 6 weeks for this to happen. But apparently merely the spectre of English in charge (the poll was only a few days after the announcement where Key anointed BE) has caused National to tank to the 45% I predicted immediately.

Downtick all you like, but BE has a reverse superpower – he’s the opposite to the Trump electoral phenomenon. Where Trump won the unwinnable, BE is going to lose the unloseable.

A “jump to the Left” was the wrong play National, the world (and most importantly – the electorate) has drifted a couple of notches to the Right in 2016 and you failed to see what was right in front of you!

  Yes I will be very interested in how Bill English goes at the next election? Maybe he has learned something and he will do very well. But my view on him is that he is a nice guy but just not got the political nous to be prime minister. I could be wrong and I am happy to be proved wrong.
  
  One thing in his favour is that he will have Andy as his main opposition. Andy has distinguished himself in his work representing Labour amongst the good people of New Plymouth. Previously New Plymouth was a marginal seat but Andy has done a tremendous job in turning it into a safe National seat 🙂

Census 2016: Sydney Opera House promotion cost taxpayers nearly $200,000, internal documents show

Taxpayers spent close to $200,000 to turn the Sydney Opera House green to promote the 2016 census, without any clear reference to the national survey. The seven sails of the national landmark were lit up for two nights but did not include any information about the census, the website, a hashtag or branding.

Internal documents show it cost taxpayers $192,000 for set-up, equipment hire, management and support.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) chief statistician David Kalisch described it as a “major public relations opportunity” and said it was likely to attract “social media influencers”. “This will maximise awareness and engagement with the census, and help create a national conversation,” Mr Kalisch wrote in the document.

Unbelievable. If David Kalisch wants to take advantage of a “major public relations opportunity” and “help create a national conversation” then he should pay for it himself.

I mean, seriously, should we use lighting displays on Sky Tower when “the government” wants to talk to “the people”?

But that’s not all:

The Opera House was part of a national campaign to light up landmarks with the colour green. The Melbourne Arts Centre, Canberra’s Telstra Tower, Brisbane’s City Hall and the Darwin Convention Centre were some of the 20 sites to “go green” for the census.

At the time, the head of the census Duncan Young said it was a “magnificent way to mark the occasion”.

Some of these public servants seem to be disconnected from the reality that they’re spending taxpayer money.

Mark Wahlberg’s Patriots Day movie unfair to Boston bomber’s widow, lawyer claims

A lawyer for Katherine Russell, widow of one of the Boston Marathon bombers, says the new film Patriots Day is unfair because it suggests she knew something was up before the attack and then didn’t cooperate with the investigation afterward.

In one scene in the Mark Wahlberg film, Russell is shown being defiant as an investigator grills her on whether there are more bombs. The movie character also refuses to answer questions and asks for a lawyer but is told she has no right to one.
Richard DesLauriers, who was special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston division during the bombings, told The Associated Press he believes the portrayal is on base. “I have no reason whatsoever to believe that anything about this aspect of the movie is inaccurate,” said DesLauriers, who is no longer with the FBI.

There’s nothing in the article to suggest that a lawsuit is imminent, so I assume the lawyer is acting as (an expensive) public relations consultant.

Just finished reading William Cashs article published in the Spectator in 1994 titled Kings of the Deal and all the subsequent faux “controversy” over the article.

The article is like the allegory in the Grimm Brothers children’s fairytale Rumplestiltskin in that vice like grip people can wield can easily be broken only if you tell the truth and name names.

The Forward reported that he had trouble publishing his work and that Lawson could not publish an article on the birth of his daughter with Down’s syndrome in The New Republic because of owner Martin Peretz’s complaint about the article. More generally, the controversy can be seen to embody divisions within conservatism, between pro-Zionist neoconservatism and an older scepticism of Jews”

There are no enemy units present on the ground to give yourself up to; the only authorities around are on your own side, and they’ll be urging you to buck up and cultivate your vengeful anger against the barbarian foe doing this to you and yours.”

So. Bombing won’t break the population. As the author notes: there is no one to surrender to. It just pisses the local population off. (And will lose the battle for hearts and minds.)

Israeli MPs have given preliminary backing to a controversial bill to legalise thousands of unauthorised Jewish homes in the West Bank.

It applies to “outposts” – settlements built without official approval in the area occupied by Israel since 1967.

The international community regards all settlements as illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

Palestinians see settlements as a major obstacle to a peace deal with Israel.

They want all settlements and outposts to be removed from the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which they seek for a future Palestinian state.

According to the anti-settlement movement Peace Now, there are 97 outposts, as well as more than 130 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The bill, which would legitimise about 4,000 settler homes, still needs to pass three readings in Israel’s parliament to become law.

Its main backer, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, has called it the eventual start of Israel’s annexation of most of the occupied territory.

The move has drawn international criticism, including from the US, Israel’s closest ally.

  Egypt has suddenly delayed a vote on its UN resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank as Donald Trump made his opposition clear. A US official told the BBC that it had been considering an abstention, which would have allowed the motion to pass.
  Israel then contacted Donald Trump’s transition team to intervene, an Israeli official told Reuters. Earlier on Thursday, Mr Trump had urged the Security Council to defeat the resolution.
  In a statement, the US president-elect said “peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations. “This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.”
  Both Israeli officials and the Egyptian president spoke with Mr Trump, it emerged
  After the postponement of the vote, an Israeli official told Reuters news agency that it had warned the Obama administration in advance that it would appeal to the president-elect if the US abstained, and confirmed that it had directly asked Mr Trump to intervene.
  Egyptian President Abdel al-Sisi also spoke to Mr Trump by telephone. In a statement, Mr Sisi’s office said the two leaders had agreed the new US administration should be given a chance to deal with the issue. However, four other members of the security council warned that if Egypt did not press ahead with its resolution before the end of Thursday, other member states would do so.
  New Zealand, Venezuela, Malaysia, and Senegal said they reserved the right to move ahead with the vote.

  Interesting isn’t it the world refused to tolerate SA doing it but it refuses to similarly enforce the UN resolution declaring settlements illegal beyond the internationally recognised Israeli border through sanctions and boycott and has done so since forever.
  
  Consequently all Israel does is pretend to believe in a two state solution and every five to ten years when the pressure gets too great it conducts negotiations but it always leaves itself a way to withdraw, and the world returns. Then in the ensuing period, Israel proceeds to build more settlements, because that was the plan all the time, they do these negotiations just to buy more time and everyone in diplomacy knows this but for some reason Israel is immune to the very same international pressure that was applied to SA.
  
  All it would take to resolve this is for Israel to return inside its own border, why doesn’t the sauce apply to the gander?
