  The liberal Democrats are stuck on virtue signalling, identity politics and big name celebrities. It’s not working for them and they should stop it now.

      I read an article a few months back that made sense, about Trump’s loudmouth, insulting style. It is like a kind of US parallel to “bro talk”, they call it “breaking balls”. It is understood that the letter of what is said, is unimportant. It is almost part of the technique, that what you say is ridiculous, the more ridiculous, the better you are at it. The masses get it, and see it as evidence that Trump is one of them.

        mm, actually, the abysmal behaviour of Hollywood and the media over this last election year has really ripped off the mask. We always knew that the media was left wing, and Hollywood too – it’s almost a cliché – but I really was surprised as to the extent. All of these stars shilling for Hillary and vilifying Trump. I read somewhere that 90% of donations from Hollywood were to Hillary.
        
        They should just shut up and do their job (which is to look pretty and entertain us) and be thankful for the wealth they’ve gained for pretending to be other people on screen.

        If something happened to Trump – if he were to be physically harmed in some way – I doubt that the media would blame Streep, although she would be a huge part of the problem.
        
        I’m not saying you have to agree with everything a president says. Hell, I hated Obama. But you don’t go making speeches against him from the bully pulpit of your fame when they guy hasn’t even started the job yet.
        
        It reminds me of a comic book from 2008 called ‘DC Universe: Decisions’ which was supposed to show which DC heroes were Democrat and which were Republican. The only hero who wouldn’t share his opinion was Superman, who said (in the comic) –
        
        “It would be unconscionable of me to share [my endorsement] with you,” he explained. “Whoever is elected to the highest office in the land should not think that they will not have our full support. That our allegiances are stronger with a defeated candidate. We don’t take sides. The battles we fight are larger than those on the political spectrum.     Ed Snack , a movie that comes to mind was her Portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in ” The Iron Lady ” which was outstanding including getting the late PM’s accent pitch perfect .Remarkable for an American and she was left in awe of Lady Thatcher’s abilities.
    
    Meryl Shreep was applauding Roman Polanski for been awarded Best Director for the Holocaust film “The Pianist ” that also by any measure was also outstanding .She was not applauding him for his sex with a 13 year old .That is an ugly smear .

      Actually no: there IS freedom of expression in this situation in that ‘I’ am free to express MY opinion, BUT should ‘you’ dare to respond to what ‘I” have said (especially if it is to either correct me or (worse) actually defend yourself) then my mates and the media will respond as it is our ‘RIGHT’ to do so. That by doing so loud and long (and repeatedly) drowns out your reply is, of course, a minor detail. WE are exercising OUR freedom of expression. We LIKE exercising that and if we DON’T actually get to hear what you are saying is ENTIRELY your fault.

        My issue isn’t Trump responding to his critics, it is the way in which he does so.
        Of all of the things to choose about Meryl Streep, he chose the acting ability of one of the all time great movie actresses, whose films have grossed about $3.5 Billion world wide.

  Trump may well be correct in saying that Meryl Streep is an overrated actress. She is an excellent mimic who can recreate characters on an external level, but as for getting beneath the skin of her characters she is unconvincing. They are pure pastiche. It is always Meryl Streep pretending to be someone else. As for her cringeworthy ‘performance’ at the Golden Globes- just pure insincere hockum.

RNZ ‘news’ is telling us all this morning that we have a very serious problem with internet pornography in our country and that the solution is to get our schools to teach our youngsters more about sex.

There are two interesting assumptions here: firstly that because we are 5th in the world in the amount of online porn being viewed that this is actually a problem, and secondly that the sexualisation of children is going to combat the ‘problem’.

My gut feeling is that it’s no to both.

Heard the waste of space so called “green party” mouthpiece, James Shaw has the gall to put the boot into hard working NZs who have the temerity to legally arrange their tax affairs,by paying what is legally due. Shaw seems to have missed the point that the 14 members who do nothing, as they suck off the millions provided by the very taxpayers Shaw is accusing them of tax evasion. With his party of do nothing bludgers joined at the hip to Angry Andys band of no hopers,the Liebour Party, seems if they get the treasury benches this year, it will be any thing that moves,and is not nailed down will be taxed.,including the dead granny tax.

Interesting interview with English this morning re FT with the EU.

Not convinced with his response about the migrant situation.
It is all very well to say that we are doing our part increasing our quota but I do not see why any trade agreement with the EU should have any inclusion of migrant quotas or immigration at this point in time where the EU has disastrous policies and any attempt to drag NZ into this debacle should be non negotiable.We do not want to be part of open borders, period.
It is scary enough hearing the name Junka mentioned.It gives me the willies that we have people talking about trade with all this other non trade stuff possibly being used in deals.
Trying to negotiate a deal with 27 countries is stupid.

Have been out of communication for a few days but was VERY PLEASED to hear Bill English comment that many feel that Waitangi day is a bit cringe worthy and that the lower marie are all messed up and dont know what they want.

Further I see that Paul Moon agrees with Seymor that moving the marie each year would be a good idea – and that would silence the morons at the Waitangi Marie. Moon is a senior in the maori studies area at AUT.

    That case is chilling for a number of reasons:
    1 – that intimidation like that is occurring
    2 – that a government authority can impose fines on a crime like that without proving it
    3 – three people were fined for what COULD have been the actions of one of them.
    
    This case undermines the concept of innocent until proven guilty. I would like to see the people behind that decision put down. They are dangerous to a free society.

Thirdly, if political access were being sought, wouldn’t the money be better spoent on the Foundation rather than the Helath Access Initiative.

The same folk who celebrate a child rapist like director Roman Polanski are sickened that the American people dared elect a candidate they don’t like.

Meryl Streep had no qualms about giving Polanski — who drugged and anally raped a 13-year-old and then fled to France to escape justice — a standing ovation when he won an Oscar for The Pianist in 2003, and has spoken of her sorrow for his plight.

Today, in a column reprinted in the Hooerald, starting from the Mad Butcher episode, Muir puts her boot into Michelle Boag, Bill English and what she calls old white guys:

“Post-Brexit and pre-Trump it feels like the OWGs are feeling sad and threatened.

“It would be easier if they stopped – just for a second – sounding like a lame order of single shot, decaf flat whites, pointless and without good taste.”

In a Northern Advocate column in December, discussing John Key’s announcement he was stepping down as Prime Minister, Muir wrote this about Judith Collins.

“… [John Key] must look around at his own swamp with Judith sitting quietly under the waterline, all ruthless amphibian ambition, and be desperate to flush himself out of there.”

Muir proves to be a teacher (subject: English) at Whangaparoa College in Northland. It looks to be a solid small school, from year 7 up, doing a good job for its kids, many from families obviously struggling a bit financially.

It would be a long punt to assume that Muir enlightens the kids that socialism as a path to the good life is a false, circular route, that at best leads back to where you started.

Radio NZ reports that a journalist studying for a Ph. D. in Auckland seems to be suggesting leeway for Maori in news deadlines.

[Julie] Middleton says that in her interviews with journalists the thing that crops up time and again is the tension between honouring tikanga and needing to file stories to a deadline.

It started last month when Senator John McCain gave the FBI a dossier outlining contacts between the Trump campaign team and Russian intelligence services. The dossier included evidence that Russia had “slam dunk” material, including video of Trump proving him to be a pedophile.

Trump is currently in a legal challenge over a rape charge involving a 13 year old (at the time), charging both Trump and Jeffrey Epstein with a “double team” sex assault. Trump’s legal team alleges that the court gag order on the case and a proposed settlement which involves a potential “non-disclosure” can be used to prohibit grand jury testimony.

McCain’s dossier was created by a former high-ranking counter intelligence official and has been reviewed by media in the US and UK. Top congressional officials have seen the documents as well and have repeatedly demanded that FBI Director James Comey give a “yea or nay” while there is still time to block a Trump presidency.

Four days ago, Trump was confronted by this dossier during a meeting with James Clapper and other intelligence officials. After the meeting, former CIA Director James Woolsey left the Trump transition team and distanced himself from further involvement.

…concerning to many is Trump’s behavior over last week’s meeting, where a number of largely unnamed intelligence officials confronted Trump over his “Russian problem.” It was Trump himself who came out of the meeting depicting it as a briefing on Russian hacking, not of evidence of his own blackmail and status as a Russian “asset.”

Trump lied.

Similarly, attempts to spin this report as “unsubstantiated” — knowing it has been in the hands of FBI Director James Comey for at least 30 days and the subject of a massive FBI investigation, the most critical in FBI history, and yet nothing has been said to clear Trump — are telling…

        So you need to trust your own perspicacity Jack. If you chose data according to who publishes it, that’s idiotic. Would you buy a book because DoubleDay published it but not the same book from Penguin? Of course not, that’s fucking nuts. But that’s what people do when they select a site based on their (normally flawed) perception of “reliability.” Personally I do trust myself to recognise bullshit when I see it so I don’t care where my data comes from, I never have and I never will. It’s called thinking. (That last sentence is exclusively to mm and stephie who right now are curling their lips into a massive, massive sneer. Aren’t you, boys.)
        
        As for the case, I’m not familiar with it, because it’s just a detail in a tapestry. Ever since Trump started campaigning I’ve noted that a case which sounds like this one has been from time to time raised. But I’ve never cared enough about it to bother to look into it.
        
        This is because I focus on Trump the package, not the detail. Overall he’s profoundly flawed, his mob connections are the thing which has worried me most as I repeatedly stated during the campaign. But he was always better than Killary and so far he remains so.
        
        He had multiple flights on Epsteins plane just like both Bill and Killary did and you only go there for one reason, and Epsteins black book really needs investigation, but even with all that, he’s still way, way better than Killary.
        
        I also note the comment in my quoted passage where its hypothesised this Russian case may not be the same as this one you’re raising.
        
        But the most interesting point it makes to me is on Woolsey.
        
        We’ll see what happens, but if it’s true and who knows, it means we’ll see Pence sworn in and that may have been the plan all along.

        There is no record on flight logs that Trump had flown on Epsteins plane and the rape complaint was withdrawn.
        However there are flight log records of over 20 flights by Bill Clinton.

One of New Zealand’s biggest industrial financiers goes into Chinese hands with ANZ Banking Group’s sale of UDC Finance to HNA Group for $660 million.

    UDC is a major supporter of project finance, and you can invest in it. Its rates aren’t too bad, considering its high credit rating. It reported an annual profit of $58.5 million a few weeks ago.
    
    From a balance of payments point of view, I think locally owned Heartland Bank would have been a better new owner than the Chinese. Heartland had been keen to buy UDC.

        It might have made a good buy for the Super Fund, or perhaps the Super Fund jointly with Hearthland.
        
        Should have suited the anti-oil, anti-war, anti-tobacco, anti-booze investment puritans. A good buy. It was returning higher than the average of ANZ’s assets. Some might therefore argue ANZ has short-changed its shareholders by selling UDC.
        
        But Milky, suddenly you purport to be defending free market principles, when usually you are a stalwart of democratic socialism.
        
        What gives, Milky? You’re not a multi-personality poster like the Stephies are you? Surely not.

This Global Warming phenomenon could be dreadful to our country.
I do not know what I can do about it.
