There are signs in Mexicos language that they are softening their stance on Trumps wall. Looking at the numbers they are very very vulnerable to the US. Significant jobs, huge balance of trade credit, billions repatriated from the US to Mexico etc etc. The Peso is free falling as Billions leave the country.
‘MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s new foreign relations secretary said Tuesday his country isn’t just willing to negotiate changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement, it wants to start talks as soon as possible.’
‘Videgaray said his government’s main concern would be “how to protect jobs in Mexico,” and said “there are a lot of reasons to think the negotiation would be favorable for Mexico.”
He said Mexico is willing to negotiate over Trump’s plan to build a border wall. But Videgaray said Mexico won’t pay for the wall, calling that “unacceptable.”

‘”All the issues that define our bilateral relationship are on the table, including security, migration and trade,” Pena Nieto said in a speech to a group of diplomats.
Reuters reported last month that Mexico’s government aimed to use security and migration to gain leverage over the United States in its talks with Trump, and could offer to reinforce its borders to get a better deal on Trade’

“Security, migration’.’offer to reinforce its border” huh. Yeah….Like building a wall!
Of course they ‘say’ they won’t pay for the wall but there are many ways that they could pay…

  Remittances from USA are the biggest income generator for Mexico. It is such a big deal that they even provide a guidebook/pamphet on how get into USA illegally.
  
  Mexicans are, generally, only able to send back money because they take US welfare which gives them surplus money.
  
  The USA just has to threaten that money stream and the Mexicans will comply.

    The reasons seem good and valid, especially as they relate to New Zealand’s unique flora, fauna and archeology. Also, there is no shortage of places for stock to roam and graze in New Zealand, including theme farms in the Auckland region:
    
    Tupuna Maunga manager Scott De Silva said the Tupuna Maunga Integrated Management Plan (IMP), which was publicly notified early in 2016, includes an objective to protect and restore the biodiversity of the ancestral mountains.
    
    He said under that objective, the intention was to phase out grazing stock and reintroduce native species, including microorganisms, invertebrates, lizards, and birds.
    
    “These contribute to resilient and healthy ecosystems,” De Silva said.
    
    De Silva said there was no set programme for the removal of stock from maunga and no deadline had been set for all stock being removed.
    
    Stock caused damage to archaeological features including historic kumara pits, one of the last and few remaining traces of Maori occupation pre-European settlement, De Silva said.
    
    Orakei Local Board member and member of the Maunga Authority Kit Parkinson said the authority provides a strong road map for ensuring Auckland’s maunga are preserved for future generations.

I regard the One Tree Hill spring lambs and daffodils as tangible Auckland cultural icons. (If people do not value their culture, they will lose it to the politics of others.)

  Well, I do not regard them as “tangible icons”. Neither lambs nor daffodils are indigenous or unique to New Zealand. Unlike other plants and animals that moving the lambs could enable to thrive there. (If people do not value their indigenous and unique wildlife, they will lose it to the alien tastes of others).

      Yes, that’s absolutely true. I have never seen a postcard with a picture of a kiwi on it, or of Milford Sound. Tourists seem far more interested in looking at things in New Zealand that they can see at home. And of course there has been absolutely no change in what people value and appreciate since 1964.

        I had to abandon aspects of my own culture that I found to be toxic in comparison to the mainstream culture in NZ.
        
        I don’t dress in a tracksuit any more. I don’t call women stupid cows and have rejected slavic chauvinism. I don’t think Americans are evil.
        
        I also decided that beating my kids and busting out a pukana at social occasions is not for me .
        
        Some cultures are simply better than others, the proof of this is the societies that spring from these cultures.

        …especially as your only other reason thus far is the longevity of tenure of daffodils and lambs? And also especially when the problem with that argument is that things indigenous, including on Maungakiekie have a much longer tenure.

        Without western culture NZ would be like PNG.
        
        If Maori culture was so flash then Maori heading overseas would go to live in PNG or the Pacific islands. But no, they head to Oz which is even less Maori than NZ. Why’s that then?
        
        Western culture is a boon for Maori too – there are more Maori now then there were under pure Maori culture. They now even have a written language thanks to Pakeha.

        So if there’s a Pa on One Tree Hill, then cordon off a 100×100 metre block of the historic stuff and let the rest be.
        
        People go to OTH because it provides a spectacular view of the city.
        
        I really don’t personally care if there are daffodils or skinks, but to kill off the pasture and replant with natives would be very expensive (I wonder who gets to pay?) and pointless and then cost a huge amount to maintain. It would be way more useful to put that money into preserving some other site that has better historic value.
        
        OTH’s appeal to Maori is not that it has huge cultural significance, but its activism potential. Every tourist who goes there gets all the grievances etc shoved down their throat.

        Yet others here have argued that “tourism” is the pragmatic, and therefore “good” reason that should be considered when deciding the matter. From the perspective of the European construct of capitalism and the resulting economic development, that would seem to be indisputable. In which case it comes down to which is a better “tourism selling point”. Indigenous or fusion. I’d suggest a fair-minded judge would say, “you could go either way”. And cmm 1:07pm post directly above makes a good case that, on balance, the status quo should be maintained.
        
        But then you seem to consider the economics of the matter matter as irrelevant. Fair enough. Just to clarify, and without wishing to put words in your mouth, is your reason that…as European is the better and dominant culture, things Maori and/or indigenous should only exist and be tolerated in the public domain as long as it does not in any way inhibit the “better” later arrival?

        It is naive to think that Maori culture is a major draw card to NZ. Sure, people will take in a bit of Maori culture as a side trip – but that’s not the primary reason they come here.
        
        If Maori culture was a huge draw card, they’d be going to a place with even richer stone age culture – say PNG.
        
        I’ve never heard a tourist say they want to come back and spend more time soaking up the Maori culture. They say they want to come back because they want to spend more time in the mountains etc.
        
        Now I am sure that there are some people who do go to PGN and come to NZ for the cultural enrichment, but they are few and far between.

        You were doing really well until that. Why not go to PNG? Because you can come here to enjoy the benefits of encountering an indigenous (sophisticated) stone age culture, yet still enjoy all the comforts and safety of a first world country.

        Lambs and cows are also yummy and (I am guessing) more than pay for their upkeep.
        
        Bush is pervasive in NZ, tourists can see it anywhere, and preserving another of the hundreds of Pa sites in NZ is pointless, there is almost nothing to be learnt from them anymore given that we had contemporary accounts of Maori culture and life from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

        ..and preserving another of the hundreds of Pa sites in NZ is pointless, there is almost nothing to be learnt from them anymore given that we had contemporary accounts of Maori culture and life from the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.
        
        Ironic attitude to a site that was set aside and then had a memorial erected on it by one of Auckland’s fathers specifically to…celebrate the Maori people.

    I think you are missing the big picture. While it is true that neither lambs nor daffodils are indigenous or unique to New Zealand, the vista of the One Tree Hill volcanic cone, the particular blueness and clarity of the Auckland sky in spring, the green of the slopes with their fingerprints of stock tracks, the igneous rocks, the smell of the air coupled with the daffodils and the lambs create a landscape unique to Auckland and is one that Aucklanders can recall when overseas, to help them remember what is waiting for them on their return to their homeland.

      Some of the things you list are indeed unique to Auckland. The daffodils and the lambs are not. Aucklanders overseas who wish to feast their eyes on daffodils and lambs can do so without any need to return to their homeland. The aspects which are uniquely Auckland would remain so – the sky would still be blue, the volcanic cone would still be a volcanic cone, the igneous rocks would still be igneous, without the daffodils and lambs.
      
      I don’t dispute that some Aucklanders like daffodils and lambs. Of course they do, and that is their right. It is not, however, a right which imposes any obligation on others to provide for their viewing pleasure. Particularly not if it is at the expense of things which really are uniquely New Zealand.

      I’m fed up to the back teeth with these unelected tribal people trying to take NZ back to some mythical dream state. Every country is the sum of its parts, every country has outside influences. I have a lot of Japanese visitors and always take them to see the ship and lambs at One Tree Hill. They are enraptured and take thousands of photos. To them the sheep are amazing, rare and adorable. They are getting a unique NZ experience in the heart of the city. There are a lot of families in Auckland who never get to experience rural NZ but can experience it in Cornwall Park.       Cities are cities and, essentially, there’s nothing much different between any of them..
      
      But we were in Auckland one week with friends fro the USofA.
      
      We took them to Rangitoto, to Devonport, to the Museums, to the Art Gallery, to a Rugby game at Eden Park … and then they went home and blogged about their trip.
      
      Their biggest praise – and the first picture their blog carried – was for One Tree Hill on a beaut fine summer’s day and their being able to picnic on the lower slopes overlooking the City of Sails, sheep grazing all about…
      
      And right after that the gush was for a barefoot walk through that lone avenue for the trees lining both sides…
      
      Its the same with me – from quite a few trips to London the memory that comes first to me is doing that beaut long walk from Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse several miles away…

      To expand my point. One Tree Hill and its lambs and daffodils has evolved into an icon in the minds of (most) Aucklanders. It is not right to trash a popular icon for the sake of regressing to some past vision.
      
      Is it possible to be a progressive and want to obliterate the present to recreate some fancied past utopia? I call that “regressive.”
      
      (Yes, I am aware of the need for environmental conservation.)

    Human beings aren’t indigenous to NZ, either Albert. They’ve only been here since about the time of Robin Hood in England.
    
    Some of the birds we regard as indigenous have been blown over the Tasman from Australia. Some of our indigenous trees, like southern beech, are also found in Chile, and even the famous Bluff oyster species is found off Chile.
    
    Then, of course, if you want non-indigenous stuff off the reserve, better rip out the roads and the wire fences, and the signs, too. Tar seal is in no way native to NZ.

        Many of us like imported plants and gardens, hence the popularity of the Parnell Rose Garden and Hamilton Gardens.

I remember opening Peter Hitchens’ The Abolition of Britain six years ago. I’d already abandoned the semi-theological platitudes of New Atheism and my mind was like a repossessed house, the bailiffs having carted off the furnishings and changed the locks on their way out. If anything, I doubt that anyone changes their minds based on reading alone. Most changes of mind are preceded by long periods of emotional tumult, often unperceived, in which eddies, tides and currents flow into different channels. Rivers silt up and dry beds rage with torrents and only when the process is finished do we see how the landscape lies.

Nevertheless, Peter Hitchens was an epiphany. I’d always wondered why school had to be so unpleasant. Why were the teachers so dreadful? Why were English teachers semi-literate and hazy about grammar? Why was discipline more or less absent? This wasn’t an unpleasant school. The overwhelming majority of the pupils were white and middle-class, children of the semi-rural and dormitory settlements of Leicestershire. Why was drug use more or less openly accepted? Why were the qualifications so obviously debased? Why were teachers loath to exercise any authority?

I more or less came to the conclusion that the entire system had collapsed, not that anyone seemed to have noticed. Teachers exercised authority on an ad-hoc basis, on a personal level and through force of personality. Those above 50 tended to be more than competent. Teachers in their twenties were more or less as clueless as we were.

  I suppose you can get the odd ‘dirty’ vaccine slip through the production line. I remember having a reaction to a type of antibiotic that I had used safely for many years. I later found that the product was now made in India rather than locally, so this possibly may have been the cause; or maybe my body had a hissy fit.

        I’ll put my cards on the table Griff. Even though I’ve spent a lifetime working out of doors in rural NZ I haven’t seen much to convince me that any climate change is not within the limits of normal fluctuations.
        
        I’m also a natural born skeptic & I admit that if I can’t feel, touch or taste something I’m not an easy bloke to sign up to a theory.
        
        But if we ignore the financial inducements offered to climate scientists there may be something in what they say especially since they seem to sing from the same choir book.
        
        Then, just as this poorly educated rustic was thinking that AGW might be worth looking into a group of smarmy overeducated wankers in NIWA refused point blank to release their raw unfudged data & my bullshit antenna has been on alert ever since.
        
        What are they scared of Griff? There’s heaps of well educated mathematicians & scientists well able to interpret the raw data & confirm or rubbish NIWA’s massaged figures but they are not allowed access to historic info.
        
        This is not confined to NZ either. Science is facts & facts are science.

        1. the world is round
        2. microbes cause diseases
        3. solid objects are mostly empty space
        4. the Earth moves
        5. mass can be converted into energy
