      some would say October 3rd 1965,
      others would say December 23rd 1913,
      
      but I would say May 9th 1865 was when the rot began. This of course being the date when the South officially lost the Civil War and so begun the great usurpation of Central Government away from the States (no, despite the approved versions of history, the American Civil war was not about abolishing slavery) and so began the process of turning a nation of rugged independent frontiersmen into the collectivist rabble you see marching on Washington to “oppose Trump’s misogyny”

      I am presently reading on my iPhone 7 the Conrad Black biography of FD Rooservelt. It’s 3360 pages of his life. There are similarities between the New Deal introduction in the height of the depression and the actions of Trump now.
      My guess is Trump has actually read this at some time. So Virtualmark, your assertion that fox news is the only source of his thinking is patently false.
      I suggest you get out more and try reading about historical figures. You might actually learn something. After all there is nothing new in this world, just a different slant on it.

      I would say America stop being great when it stopped believing in itself. That was during the rise of liberalism and leftism and progressivism probably beginning in the 1960s. Now in America the left believe everything America does is bad. Vietnam’s bad, treatment of women bad, America is racist, America is sexist. The leftist language goes on and on every day.
      
      We can totally see that phenomena in New Zealand as well. We have to learn Maori to make up for the terrible things we did in the 19th century – “colonial oppression”. We have to have more women in boardrooms to make up for our patriarchal sexist attitudes. It goes on and on. According to leftist principles Western civilisation is not great, America is not great, New Zealand is not great.
      
      That’s one of the reasons the left hates Donald Trump so much. He believes in American greatness, we once were a proud people and we can be again.

      Virtualmark, I think you fall into the trap of taking the opposition caricature of Trump and believing that to be true.
      
      There’s no particular reason to assume that Trump is so particularly stupid as to only watch TV and assume a knowledge of the world based on that. For a start he ran a far more intelligent and reality based campaign than Clinton with a specific focus on the States that were important in order to be elected. That may or may not have been a strategy devised by someone other than Trump but he (obviously) agreed and went along with it. It was no accident that the probably only viable strategy he had to get to 270 electoral votes was the one they followed.
      
      A cheap and ineffective shot.
      
      Anyway, these days I doubt anyone would read what Madison did, and they’re just old, dead, white men anyway.

        But that said, the Donald is clearly not in the same intellectual orbit as men like Madison & Jefferson. They may be old, dead, white men now. But I still respect the intellect, wisdom, fairness and bravery that saw them write the Declaration of Independence (an act of treason for which they could be horribly executed) and the Constitution (one of the greatest documents written by men).

  In it there is a quote from Judith Curry, a climate scientist who stepped out of line some years ago, inferring that this latest whistleblowing is a consequence of the changed political climate. The whistleblower would have been too afraid under the Obama administration.

I am wondering whether many people noted an opinion piece in the Monday Herald, by Ted Dawe, the author of a novel for teens that is apparently on the grubby side.

The opinion piece was boilerplate PC revisionism of early NZ history and lefty garbage: Maori weren’t doing agriculture because of the land’s “infertility”; they were in a state of “equilibrium”, including in “the tribal balance of power”. And the worst disaster for the country, was the introduction of private property ownership!

One shudders to think of the possibility that besides this rot being in a mainstream daily newspaper, this is the narrative being taught to kids in our education system.

      If he had a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) it wouldn’t be an issue Salacious. The fact remains that when the positive test became known, it was sufficiently significant that Tuipolotu was sent home before the end of the European end-of-season tour. By not being open and transparent at the time NZR has created a far bigger issue than it may otherwise have been.

        Fair enough KS but you will also note that Dan Carter had a TUE and that didn’t stop the usual media hacks (and the usual anti-NZR KB commenters) from going full retard on him if only because he didn’t “front” with it as it was a personal medical issue.
        I stand to be corrected on the Tuipolotu case but at that level they are generally very aware of their oblgations and the chances of being caught so would be surprised if there was anything to it other than a dumb mistake or media beat up

Carrion Baggage

Companies like Mighty Ape and The Warehouse should be forced to buy Kiwi made products first and only import products not made here. Running small businesses in NZ is TOUGH and to see competitive products on the shelves in these stores, imported from China, is a real kick in the guts. In some cases they have stolen NZ IP too which make it even worse. China doesn’t have the same labour and employment laws and no minimum wage requirement like NZ does. By importing competing products (probably made by slave children paid next to nothing) they are effectively bypassing our laws. Changing the geography of your product’s manufacture shouldn’t excuse you from the laws of your country.

    Hi Wiseowl. In my workshop I guess 🙂
    Imagine you have an idea. You make a few prototypes and bring them to market. People seem to love the product so you tool up a workshop and hire some staff, working with WINZ you have a genuine desire to help people learn new skills and succeed. Things are going well, and you’re excited as the company begins to flourish. You are head down arse up putting in some long hours.
    Then one day you’re out shopping, and BOOM, there it is. Your product. On the shelf, staring back at you. Your heart skips a beat, but as the fog of confusion lifts your hearts sinks as you realise… you didn’t make it.
    How often is this story repeated around NZ. We should be protecting these innovators and their ideas and products, and celebrating their succcesses on store shelves all over the country.

      Yes, but there is a bright side able to be seen in numerous US examples. Most of the profit in many clever new inventions, is made by the inventor’s company back in the USA. The actual manufacture is of more marginal value, when the low wages and local enviro and resource impacts are taken into account.
      
      “The New Geography of Jobs” by Enrico Moretti, is very enlightening.
      
      EDIT: and a lot of new products success is due to scale and affordability. If you insist on doing high-wage cottage industry manufacturing, you will just end up as a forgotten early trier in the industry.

        I agree with your first comment, a “buy NZ made” campaign would be great. There’s a whole raft of reasons (economic and environmental) why buying locally sourced and made products is good.
        I’d just urge you, you don’t have to make personal attacks and call people names to make your point. These issues affect real people with real families and there’s enough hate out there at the moment.

      When decimal currency was introduced the value of the dollar was pegged at ten shillings. ie $2 = 1£.
      
      In 1966 first mortgage rates were around 7 percent. Not much higher than now. Hower the rates rose steadily till the 1980’s when they peaked at 20% or so.

So according to the Salvation Army NZ should only be increasing police numbers if crime is rising apparently.
The fact that a lot of the clearance rates on present crime such as burglary is down in the 20-30% is okay obviously and no cause for concern.
As long as serious crime is contained then everything is fine as lower end crime is just one of those things we should put up with seems to be their position.

  More people are going to prison because the crimes of which they are convicted are more serious. A simple adding up of the number of assaults, for example, may quantify them but doesn’t explain their seriousness. So even if there is not more crime, there can be worse crime.

  Unsolved crime is massive but it is not committed by unknown criminals. It is committed by known criminals, it is just that they are doing ten times as much as what they get caught for. Lock them up sooner and more often, and for longer, crime falls dramatically. As I say, what’s so hard to understand?

  It’s election year, which means that National & Labour will once again be trying to demonstrate to the voters that they are ‘tough on law & order’.
  This means more money spent on police & prisons. Always a vote winner, or at least not losing ground.
  As usual people, like the Sallies, who work with the downtrodden and poorly educated & who generally commit the crimes & occupy the prisons, will want the money spent on housing, rehabilitation, education etc
  Take your pick.

This from their Leader that is more interested in becoming Prime Minister of NZ than keeping to Labours values. Again this coming from the Muppet that was preaching that National were in disarray and tearing themselves apart when Bill English was appointed Prime Minister after John Key, but now we find out not only did National keep their discipline in their debate they are a Party in unison and do not show the infighting that has been high lighted in Labour over the few days. This shows Labour is still not a Party to govern NZ.

Keeping Stock

Very sad to hear the news this morning of the death at just 61 of Steve Sumner. Sumner led the All Whites through the glory days of 1981, to the World Cup in Spain in 1982. He scored a goal in the 2-5 loss to Scotland, and is one of only four All Whites to have scored a World Cup finals goal.

Sumner was a terrific player, a great leader of possibly the best All Whites team ever, and from all reports, a thoroughly decent bloke. My sincere condolences to his family, his former team mates, and everyone in the football community who knew him.

    Quite so Longknives – it all started in late April 1981, when the All Whites somewhat unexpectedly drew with Australia 3-all at Mount Smart in the first Oceania Group qualifying match. It really gathered steam when we beat Australia 2-nil at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the return leg, a match where Grant Turner scored one of the great All Whites goals.
    
    They then qualified for a group with three Asian sides; China, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. There was the infamous match against Kuwait in Auckland where a spectator threw a can at the very dodgy Indonesian referee, the win over the Saudis away where we scored five goals in the first half, but couldn’t get one in the second, and finally the 2-1 win over China in the play-off in Singapore. The opposition’s stance on partnership schools won’t get a pass mark from me. And as far as Maori are concerned, Labour’s Education spokesman Chris Hipkins’ Private Members Bill to scrap partnership schools rates an E.

True, there has been the odd failing and in some cases questionable purchases. But when you look at the success this alternative style education model has had for Maori, then it gets an A+ every day.

I truly believe in the partnership school model. I believe in it so much we have one at Nga Whare Waatea. The kura comes under the Manukau Urban Maori Authority of which I am chief executive.

To me it appears that Labour’s need to appease the unions is at the expense of children’s education. John Tamihere, who is the chief executive for the Waipareira Trust and a former Labour Party minister, and I have supported the charter school concept for a number of years now.

We will try anything that will help turn around the negative statistics in terms of Maori students failing in mainstream schools. That doesn’t mean we are anti-mainstream schools or in fact anti-Labour – it means we are pro-Maori and pro our people.

It is Hipkins’ right to put this through as a Private Members Bill but I would suggest that not even his own party colleagues are happy with his stance and when push comes to shove, they might not vote for it to happen. Let’s hope not.

  I read a biography of a particularly famous American who, prior to WWII, was very sympathetic to the Communist Party and gave them substantial sums of money.
  However, he refused to become a card carrying member because doing do would have required him to subscribe wholesale to a manifesto some of which he disagreed.
  So if you join the ranks of the Labour Party it looks like the same applies. Mr J has had to swallow a dead rat or two.
  I suppose that’s the price of ambition.

The United States president is becoming a danger to the world. It is time for Germany and Europe to prepare their political and economic defenses.

Among the things that counted as true progress during the 20th century were multilateralism and free trade. The world has become so complex that no single country can solve the major problems on its own — that was our recognition. Organizations like the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, NATO and the EU were all created for this reason. None of these organizations is perfect, but they are what we launched — and we do need them. Bannon now wants to wipe them away, and either Trump is executing Bannon’s intentions or he shares them.

That’s why under President Trump, both the justified and the contemptible will be melded. Injustice is a major issue of our times, as are fears of digitalization and globalization — and rightfully so given that the division of society and the speed of modern life is, in fact, extreme. Trump fuses these worries of his voters with nationalism and xenophobia. That’s how demagogues work and it is how they become effective. The fact that the United States, a nuclear superpower that has dominated the world economically, militarily and culturally for decades, is now presenting itself as the victim, calling in all seriousness for “America first” and trying to force the rest of the world into humiliating concessions is absurd. But precisely because this nonsense is coming from the world’s most powerful man, it is getting trapped by him.

This is not a threat that will somehow resolve itself. The German economy has become the target of American trade policy and German democracy is ideologically antithetical to Trump’s vision. But even here, in the middle of Germany, right-wing extremists are trying to give him a helping hand. It is high time that we stand up for what is important: democracy, freedom, the West and its alliances.

Hmmmm, Germans against Trump. Will EAD be able to reconcile the two positions?

    cha, again a great find . Ron Rosenboum’s book “Explaining Hitler” is well worth a read where he gives some attention to the Munich Post and their perceptive, courageous and brazen criticism of Hitler and the Nazis .
    
    The newspaper certainly raised the ire of Hitler ( the Poisoned Kitchen ) and of course had it immediately shut down and its Editor and Journalists carted off to concentration camps . I understand few ,if any, survived .

  This is a HUGE backdown, because he cannot possibly give Jackson a winnable place on the list, if he wants David Parker, Trevor Mallard and himself to come in to Parliament as list-only MP’s.
  
  The only way Labour can bring about gender equity is by stacking the list with females in the top positions. If Greg O’Connor wins Ohariu, the problem is further magnified, and another female will have to come into Parliament via the list to balance the penis to vagina ratio.
  
  And of course, that presents Labour with a massive problem on current polling, let alone the likely backlash to Little’s attempt to manipulate Labour’s list by bringing in fellow union hacks. It is still not beyond the realms of possibility that Labour may only get a couple of List MP’s, or even fewer.

    I believe Adern and Moroney are currently List.
    So this coming Election, Labour would need enough List Seats for:
    Andrew Little, Kelvin Davis, Trevor Mallard, David Parker, Sue Moroney, King (if she’s still around), Jacinda Adern (if she misses Mt Albert), and about three more women because currently about 12 of 31 members are women, and then Willie Jackson (about 11th), if the current Labour Electorate seats stay the same.
    
    There are currently 5 Labour List Seats I think, so Willie would miss by 6 places.
    And he has already resigned from Radio Live.

  Where is the political leadership ?
  
  The 1st Annual Demographia International Housing Affordabilty Survey was released early 2005.
  
  These annual surveys, as Oliver Hartwich of The New Zealand Initiative within the Introduction to this year’s edition makes clear, have proven to be an essential foundation for constructive public discussion of these issues.
  
  By early 2007, the then New Zealand Opposition National Party, under the leadership of the young John Key, started to ‘use’ the housing issue to pressure the then Labour Government in the lead-up to the late 2008 election.
  
  The Key led (centre – right) National Party won.
  
  Mr Key was extremely clear from 2007 through to the election late 2008, as this interview and speeches at the time illustrate.
  
  Sadly … post- election …the ambitious action man became the can kicker.
  
  In advocacy terms however, the ‘tipping point’ was the October 2012 Government response to housing affordability report ( video – media presentation ), led by then Finance Minister (now Prime Minister) Bill English … with the focus on –
  
  * land supply,
  * infrastructure financing,
  * process and
  * construction costs.
  
  The performance since that time … now over four years ago … could most charitably be described as woeful.
  
  The incompetence of a supposedly centre-right government has been extremely disappointing.
  
  Mr Key had long been disruptive to progress on these issues … again, as this writer made clear soon after the major October 2012 announcement with … Housing: Mr Key – Get on the Programme .
  
  Since the October 2012 announcement, for example, Auckland housing has further inflated from about 6.7 times household income to 10.
  
  Auckland’s median house price was $427,500 when Mr Key’s Government came to office late 2008 ( refer 2009 5th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey ).
  
  If prices had even been held at this level … with a sound mix of land releases and progressive bond financing of infrastructure … and with Auckland’s current median household income of $83,000, Auckland’s median multiple today would be 5.1 not the current 10.
  
  Median house prices are currently way out of control at around $830,000.
  
  Better still … if prices had been allowed to gently ease since late 2008 (as polling has illustrated most New Zealanders prefer … and currently getting underway in Greater Christchurch, led by easing rentals), then Auckland today would be well on the road to restoring housing affordability.
  
  Auckland’s house prices would now be around 4 times household incomes.
  
  The median house price would be about $330,000 … not the current stratospheric and grossly irresponsible $830,000 !
  
  Political failure of epic proportions !
  
  Thankfully however … there is now a very broad consensus across the political spectrum.
  
  This is thanks to New Zealand being a dynamic democracy with an engaged and responsible media … as illustrated within the extensive postings within ‘Three Years On … The Great Consensus Emerges’ and the ‘2016’ sections of this writers archival website Performance Urban Planning .
  
  This broad consensus is remarkable. A world first.
  
  By May 2016, polling by Newshub / Reid Research found an unprecedented 76% of the public dissatisfied with the Governments management of the housing crisis.
  
  What had been a housing crisis worsened to become a political crisis as well.
  
  I predicted late August housing would be Mr Key’s Waterloo .
  
  Also during late August, Mr Key had an unfortunate interview with Mark Sainsbury at Newshub .
  
  Labours Housing Spokesperson Phil Twyford followed, speaking competently with conviction.
  
  Mr Twyford’s comments reminded one of Labour’s proud history on housing … Restoring the housing that Jack (and Norm) built … Oliver Chan … Spinoff .
  
  Late November, the Labour Party leader Andrew Little spoke to the Property Council .
  
  Housing concerns featured very prominently within the September New Zealand Herald’s Mood of the Boardroom 2016 .
  
  Business leaders had lost confidence in Mr Key. And even more so, his Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith.
  
  Mid 2016 Nick Smith welcomed the Labour Party’s call to abolish city limits .
  
  Astonishingly, he has made no attempt whatsoever to reach out to other political parties to form a broad coalition on these issues.
  
  The broad consensus is there. The only obstacle are political incompetence and inertia.
  
  In contrast, Labour’s Housing Spokesperson Phil Twyford, with his colleague David Parker, are reaching out to other political parties, as happened with the Housing Accords Extension legislation earlier September … and on other occasions.
  
  In private during September and with an election required by the end of 2017, Mr Key made the decision he was going to exit politics.
  
  He had no intention of facing the music in 2017.
  
  Within the meandering Media Conference on the date of his resignation … Monday 5 December … no mention was made of the housing crisis.
  
  Remarkably, the journalists present failed to ask Mr Key … why ?
  
  2017 is election year … with housing the Number One issue … again … as this pre – Christmas poll result made clear … ROY MORGAN: Bill English must find solution to housing crisis
  
  Voters will decide who is capable of getting the essential changes in place … an exercise in sorting out the performers from the pretenders .

A very good interview here. Hollywood Reporter columnist Michael Wolff is interviewed on CNN about the media and Trump. Wollff is currently the only journalist doing what journalists have always done when a new administration comes in – he is going in and asking questions and finding out what they plan to do etc.

“I am the only person having this conversation [with the Whitehouse], and then my conversations get retailed throughout the media chain”

He also agrees that the media is at war with Trump – no doubt about it. “At the very center of this, is this new grail that we have – how are we going to take this guy down”.

WOLFF: I think it’s — and I mean this with truly no disrespect, but I think you can border on being sort of quite a ridiculous figure. It’s not a good look to repeatedly and self-righteously defend your own self-interest.

The media should not be the story. Every week in this religious sense, you make it the story. We are not the story.

WOLFF: Listen, I love your show. I just wish you wouldn’t turn to the camera and lecture America about the virtues of the media and every one trying to attack it. The media will be fine.

    Because all you ever need is a bulldozer ? Have you seen those slips, they’re unstable from the top down and bulldozing away the base will just bring more down. Plus the simple solution is just to push the lot into the sea which is no doubt proscribed on environmental grounds.
    
    For the big slips I would hope that they do have appropriately qualified people both going on site and studying the geology and working out the best engineering solution to a large problem.
    
    I do wonder if in some of the worst affected places it would be a better solution to actually build an off-shore bridge like roadway for a certain distance, expensive as hell but perhaps more resilient. An alternative inland route South would probably avoid Kaikoura altogether.

        A couple of robot bulldozers (they exist) to do the dangerous road-level work. Or widely available GPS guided Farm Tractors pulling or pushing blades. Replacing machinery is way cheaper than extreme safety maintenance
        
        50 years ago this work would have been completed in a month at a cost of a few 10’s of millions – read about some of old roading projects in South Island, like the bulldozers into Fiordland Skippers Canyon or Hood’s (mostly single handed) making the Mount Hutt skifield road). Excessive regulation has killed our ability to build and maintain infrastructure.

        Hard to counter that argument. Completing any project in NZ is child’s play compared with getting approval from OHS wankers & the snail cuddlers.
        
        That said clearing slips such as occurred in the Manawatu Gorge & Kaikoura is not a matter of running a dozer through the tail of the slip until the existing road is exposed. Somehow the unstable scree has to be brought down & the face cleared. Failure to do so will see road users reduced to roadkill on a regular basis as long as there’s loose material above.
        
        Dozers also have their limitations. All they can do on slips is push material from one place to another. They can’t load it for disposal nor work above track level. When the roadworks you instance were underway the modern digger hadn’t been invented.
        
        I do agree however that technology such as used in flying drones will replace men operating machinery on dodgy slopes. Difficult roading projects in the 50s were considered a success if only three or four men lost their lives for every ten miles.
        
        Nowadays equivalent loss of life would be considered avoidable carnage & rightly so.

      Quite so Ed. I heard someone mention in Parliament yesterday that the biggest slip on the road north of Kaikoura is around 1000 feet high. That represents a helluva lot of rubble already disturbed, and if the experience of the Manawatu Gorge is anything to go by, several times more waiting to tumble down.
      
      Fixing SH1 north of Kaikoura is going to be a very slow and deliberate process, and I’d far rather that it took longer if it’s done properly the first time around.

Maori writer Patricia Grace wants Maori to be exempted from the Public Works Act.

That would mean new roads would have to go around Maori land (unless there were multi-million dollar bribes perhaps).

This is interesting. Maori presumably would still be able to use other roads and railways and public facilities that initially used the Public Works Act. More of the policy: what’s mine is mine and what’s yours if half mine.

Our council is building a road costing $13m that is totally unnecessary but other options included going past marae ( 3 in fact).
The council didn’t want to stand up to race based opposition so chose to stuff up the lives of a number of producers and businesses by ploughing a road through a new route to avoid standover tactics.
Appalling.

  Another poster with a jammed caps-lock key.
  
  New mechanical keyboards beginning to come out of China are now affordable and some have “roll over” meaning keys are less likely to jam during fast typing.
  
  I think the falling price may be being caused by the electronic switches at the core of mechanical keyboards coming out of patent coverage.
