Delighted there were no more whale strandings last night.
Sick to death of the over the top ridiculous “news” coverage. They can now move back to more important things , like how racist we New Zealanders are, due to the actions of one rude Maori.

  When paying attention to the news coverage of the rescue efforts, one could not help but notice that pretty much every single altruistic volunteer giving up their own time was white
  
  But this “reality we witnessed with our own eyes” had to be drowned out by the MSM in case anyone noticed this “hate fact”.
  
  Cue, over the top coverage of 2 Maori who turned up to perform a Maori Prayer as it “was important to him because of the spiritual and ancestral connection he has to the whales”

  This whole, “Maori being spiritual guardians of our nation” is just nauseating sh*t – surely people can’t actually take this seriously despite the non stop propaganda.
  
  If they were really Guardians of nature, they would be down there helping out the rescuers rather than seeking publicity and making sure they get exclusive rights to the whale carcasses to strip bare as is their “culture”.

      I repeatedly point the hate fact of the disappearance of the Moa to the fantasists but they have never let facts get in the way of the “narrative” (White Man = evil, anyone but White man = spiritual noble savage)
      
      And what bl**dy connection do Maori have to Whales? The only animals they were technologically capable of hunting were dumb flightless birds like Moa and they had no animal husbandry skills. They could catch fish in shallow river beds with baskets and spears but that was about it.
      
      Most likely never knew what a Whale was until European Whalers showed and up and (regrettably) killed them in huge numbers.
      
      How they had a “spiritual connection” to a mammal they did not know existed baffles me :)…… actually it doesn’t….the more “spiritual” the connection the more “koha”

        Whales would have stranded often (more than they do now) and would thus have been a reasonable source of much needed protein – along with seals etc.
        
        Of course Maori would have seen whales close up. Southern Right whales come close inshore as do sperm whales and others.
        
        If one is to believe the stats on various websites, there was a population of around 100k Maori when the whites turned up.
        
        That means there was plenty of grub available from the sea.
        
        Moa must have tasted pretty great to make it worth all the effort hunting them to extinction.

        In the first two centuries of settlement, Māori were more often seal hunters than moa hunters. There is evidence of extensive sealing in the far north, Coromandel, Taranaki, Cook Strait, the Canterbury coast and the south from Waitaki to Fiordland. However, by the 1700s seals were confined to the far south.

        So the seals had phased out of the North Island and much of the South Island by the maoris to the more hidden and difficult areas of NZ to access. After all they were pretty good to eat, “far more tender and juicy” to beef steak.

        Looks like Maori weren’t doing too well for food in some locations when Europeans turned up.
        
        Fishing was often a seasonal activity…. so long periods without much food was the pattern for some.
        All the easy grub had been killed off within 200 years of first arrivals.

        Mmmmmm – I grew up in a predominately Maori Settlement near the coast but cannot ever recall hearing of `pirau’ whale. Crayfish yes, corn yes and saw plenty of eels hung on fences but never whale.

  I’m not exactly sure what you wanted to lead the local news. The PM didn’t open a tractor factory, although he did shear a sheep & go to the big gay out and tie himself in knots explaining why he now supports gay marrriage. Hardly headline news.

    Yes it appears to be compulsory for the Prime Minister to go to the big gay out. Why that is so for a supposedly conservative Catholic politician is a mystery to me?
    
    Why can’t we have one politician on the right who has the guts of their convictions? Who decides not to attend the big gay out. Who stands up for traditional marriage, actual marriage. How come we can’t have diversity of opinion in this country?
    
    Here is my prediction. Bill English is in trouble in the next election. He has no real convictions apart from wanting to get on with people and be a nice fellow. Well he is a nice fellow but that won’t save him. All labour has to do is to have a moderately presentable leader who has a modicum of social skills and they will shoo in. It pains me to say it because I would much rather have national than labour. But I believe the sad fact of the matter is that Bill just doesn’t have it. He didn’t have it last time he ran as leader of the National party and sadly he does not have it now.
    
    National’s only hope is that Andy will lead Labour in the next election. Andy could never inspire the confidence of the good people of New Plymouth and was instrumental in turning New Plymouth from a marginal seat to a safe National seat. One can only hope he does a similar job with the whole New Zealand electorate.
    
    But sadly National has no convictions apart from going along with a leftist agenda, just more prosperously than the opposition.

      What you are forgetting is the total collapse of the liabore vote. There is a core of dumbarse people who will always vote for liabore for what ever reason. 15% would be about the number. With such a useless leader in Angry, there is no way this can be increased. If his own caucus won’t vote for the useless prick, why would any of the other 20-30% vote for Liabore?
      That leaves them with no one to vote for, so they will decide to stay home come election day.
      I predict a very low turn out in September. Here’s hoping it pisses down with rain as well.

      I keep saying something like this. The Helen Clark program for NZ continued unabated from 2008 onwards; even legislation she hadn’t got round to yet, gay marriage and emissions trading. Nothing was wound back; not the housing supply crisis (red tape), not anti-smacking, not WFF, not logging on the west coast, not the Air Force, not proper mining.
      
      On Treaty of Waitangi and Maori separatism, National has tried to out-do Helen, trying to curry favour with Maori by portraying Helen as the mean, nasty Pakeha imperialist who wouldn’t give them the foreshore and seabed, the fish, the water, the radio spectrum, fee-extraction powers over all development, and whatever next.
      
      National have made an art-form out of virtue-signalling, being “even PC-er than thou”, and winning the approval of media talking heads and lefty elites. NZ-ers have been under an illusion since 2008, that Labour “lost” at that time, which is no more true than that the French under Vichy government from 1940, could pretend they “hadn’t lost” to the Germans.         Totally agree Phil. I noticed that at the gay marriage select committee. It was headed up by Ruth Dyson (Labour), the legislation was sponsored by Louisa Wall (Labour) and Kevin Hague (Greens).
        The select committee had 3 representatives from National, no names who were barely engaged apart from one supposed Christian who was for it. So gay marriage got through under the watch of the National government.
        Anti-smacking has not been touched by this supposedly conservative government.
        The only remotely right of centre thing they have done, where they have stood against the elites liberal media, is a tepid toe in the water with charter schools. And I would bet dollars to donuts that will be immediately reversed by a Labour government.
        
        Here is a clue for National. Brexit and Trump show that there is a move to the right. There is an unrepresented electorate out there that is sick of political correctness, wants to take their country back, is proud of their past and is tired of constant overturning of everything that they hold dear. It is time for a politician that will for instance, stand and fight the media for the leftist lapdogs that they are.
        
        Trump is that person in the United States. It would be great to have a person that has those convictions here in New Zealand.

        When I use the spectrum of left and right, I have communists, fascists, crony capitalists and global elites on the left, including G Soros, the Rockefellers, and everything they fund.
        
        The solutions are to be found on the “right” represented by Adam Smith, Edmund Burke, Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, etc. All these people would have been clear about genuine economic freedom, political freedom, and values worth preserving.

      Scott ,the news this morning suggests to the contary that the PM regards himself as a social conservative who voted against civil unions and gay marriage and there were various reason why he did not attend the big Gay out.
      
      However his more socially conservative stance surely must be music to many religious groups including of course certain Christians and Muslims.

  When I was having my first baby there seemed to be a fashion for labouring mothers to employ some electrical gadget to shock them when they were experiencing pain (TENS device). I wasn’t convinced as to the efficacy of such a thing and made sure that all & sundry were well aware that I wanted drugs that worked…

    Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but in telling someone from another race, based on the fact that she was not a Maori, that she had no right to be here, the abuser was clearly being racist. There was clearly a belief that Maori had a superior claim to live here because of certain characteristics. My point is that racism can be directed at a belief that another race is inferior, but it can equally manifest itself in a belief that one’s own race is superior.

I see my facebook is now full of rantings about the proposed new dam at Ruataniwha, but don’t propose to form an opinion based on facebook rantings. I do remember Whaleoil going on about the “dodgy socialist dam” some time ago, but I was getting sick and tired of Cameron by then so couldn’t be bothered to pay attention.

Can anybody provide, or provide a link to, a clear statement of the issue from a more reliable and objective source than either Forest & Bird or Whaleoil?

    I’m not convinced the dam would harm the Tuki.
    The dam would include ‘flushes’ of the river periodically to help remove algae etc, and a steady trickle to help the flow rate. This would be very little for 95% of the year, but in the height of summer at its lowest flow, could help.
    
    It would certainly help with water supply issues for CHB towns.
    
    I’m not convinced either way on it yet (especially whether it is economically viable), but I do wonder if some of our other dam’s or large projects received similar opposition at the time, but decades later people couldn’t image life without them.

      Submissions were made earlier that showed ample water was available in CHB that could be reticulated to users without building a dam.

  We had similar issues with projects like this here in Canterbury. There are a few issues that come into play with these dams:
  
  1) Irrigation increases production so the farmers want it. They say it will make them more profitable as well as create jobs.
  
  2) Irrigation causes land use changes. It is expensive. That means traditional drylands style farming (sheep/beef) cannot afford the irrigation so it tends to move things over to intensification.
  
  3) They also want the councils to fund the exploration/proposals of these dams.
  
  4) There are knock on impacts of these dams which are generally negative (reduced water quality etc) and marginally beneficial (eg. maybe some extra fishing in canals).
  
  My biggest concerns are:
  A) If this is such a benefit to the farmers then surely they should be prepared to pay for all the costs. Why does the council (ie. ratepayers) have to pay? If the dam can’t pass the free market test of the people who would benefit actually paying the cost then it doesn’t really seem such a flash deal.
  
  B) Gotta go carefully with some of those environmental impact studies. The reports are always generated by people who want the project to proceed and over sell the positives and undersell the negatives. They also tend to put more emphasis on making the taniwha happy than nitrates and other scientific stuff.

    I think big spend-ups on infrastructure to support rural industry, but denying urban industry the same, is lunacy. Read “The World is Spiky” by Richard Florida, or even our own late Prof Sir Paul Callaghan’s “From Wool to Weta”. Urban industry is where all the wealth growth in the world economy has come from since WW2. Primary produce is a marginal game, low profits for massive consumption of land and water and basic resources.
    
    I don’t mean we shouldn’t bother to do it, but that we need to be realistic about urban potential. For example, while NZ has a high total road network mileage per capita, almost all of it is rural roads that carry stuff-all vehicles; but numerous urban roads carry 30,000 vehicles per day and we won’t 4-lane those roads! This is gross imbalance.

    The majority of the costs in irrigation schemes is in appeasing the green-stacked bureaucracies, earthworks are relatively cheap. The costs you imagine the ratepayers paying for are costs created by the councils and regulators themselves. There is also huge risk in attempting to establish or grow irrigation schemes as you can spend millions or 10’s of millions over many years and end up being rejected for political reasons (or to appease greens). It’s a huge expensive gamble for dryland farmers with unstable income.
    
    Irrigation is responsible for a 10’s of billions in export revenues for NZ (the massive increase in output created by intensification and year to year consistency of production). Dryland farming has far lower earnings, employs less people and contributes less tax etc to economy. Irrigating all of the Canterbury plains would add billions in turnover to the region, add 10’s of thousands of jobs, and increase export earnings. Canterbury is very well suited to intensification as it is a narrow strip with fantastic drainage and little effected by nutrification (which would be further reduced if only it could get more water from eg west coast or more water harvesting)

  I think there is a lot of truth in that, but if the increased money supply was put into the economy in a different place, and distortions that are gamed by powerful investors were removed, then it wouldn’t be harmful.
  
  One of the most obvious channels for inequality creation, is expanded money supply feeding into urban land price bubbles, enriching property investors and incumbent owners while creating an ever-larger class of people who will be non-home-owners for life. But if we had urban land markets as lightly regulated as US median-multiple-3 cities, the land prices would not inflate and the low interest rates and easy credit actually make it easier to buy a home, just as they make it easier to buy a car or a TV.

Voting begins today in the Mt Albert by-election, and I see Penny has her billboards out, though they are so low to the ground that only vertically-challenged people will see them. She also seems to be confused about what she’s standing for, with anti-Auckland Council slogans, nothing to do with a central government election.

Also, the Labour Party billboards in the photo with the article at the link below are interesting; they say “Vote Jacinda on 25 Feb”. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a billboard from a major party which only gives the candidate’s christian name.

How long can the media sustain this level of full retard over Trump? I can’t recall anything quite like it.

Trump continues to implement his policies at a fairly rapid clip doing pretty much exactly what he said he would do in the election, and the news media continues to react to each fairly innocuous announcement like an act of mass murder and continues to portray him as Adolf Hitler.

In my opinion the MSM are mostly damaging their own credibility every day this continues. Of course they also damage Trump, although probably not as much as they imagine. Remember that similar full retard coverage of Trump during the election didn’t stop him from getting elected. I’d say most Trump supporters are probably ignoring the news media completely at this point.

So who will win the standoff. I’d put my money on Trump. What some of the more hysterical media pundits seem to forget is that the election is actually over. Trump won. He is the president for the next four years. The fake news and hysteria really doesn’t hurt him all that much. But every day that this nonsense continues the level of trust in news organisations is going to decline. The media are destroying their own credibility by continuing to behave in a hysterical way. And Trump is probably happy to watch them do it. Because he is certainly right to say that the media party is now his main opposition.

How should we measure the progress of this strange political standoff. Maybe political polls should also start to measure the credibility of news organisations. We can then see who is winning by comparing Trumps approval rating with the level of trust in various news media; see who goes up and who goes down.

      While I share your political values I am slightly less negative about Trump. I don’t really like the man and some of the things he has done – the Trump University scam was particularly awful and in my opinion showed poor judgement. And I don’t agree with many of his policies, particularly on trade. But I don’t think he is quite as bad as you say.       Narcissist – yes. Absolutely. No doubt about it – just look at the hair. Just read some of his statements. I agree with you on that one.
      
      Mentally Unstable – no. In fact I’d say quite the opposite. He has handled some tough periods in his life that would weed out the mentally weak. I’d say he is actually fairly stable and copes with pressure well.
      
      Compulsive liar – no. Ben Carson was definitely a compulsive liar. Trump is not. Trump is a salesman and a showman and he often shades the truth, but he almost never outright lies as a compulsive liar would do.
      
      Tenuous grip on reality? – no. He clearly does see the world very differently to the way Obama did – he doesn’t think Islam is a religion of peace for example – but he is still seeing the same reality, he is just reaching different conclusions about it.

        The many instances of this are very well documented:
        
        -The claim that his was the best attended inauguration
        -“The murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years.”
        – “Nobody respects women as much as I do”
        – “An amazing statistic is: there are more than 2 million criminal aliens with convictions in the country right now.”
        – “We’re giving you massive tax relief for the middle class.”
        – “I was against getting into the war in Iraq.”
        
        The list goes on and on. And on. There are literally hundreds of barefaced lies that this man has told. They are well documented and he never (to my knowledge) backs up these brazen lies or even tries to justify them. In his mind (or, whatever passes for a mind), a thing is true simply because he says it, no matter how ridiculous or provably untrue it is.
        
        To conclude: Most of Donald Trump’s lies are not just arguably different interpretations of the facts – they are purely invented facts which have no basis in reality.

I do think Dave Mann needs to get out more away from the leftist media and spend time in front of FoxNews and Breitbart and there is a good site called American greatness which is worth checking out. Also anything from Ann Coulter. Coulter is good on the so-called fact checking. I would suggest to Dave that the facts are in dispute.
        
        The murder rate being the highest in 47 years for example. I haven’t checked that out but I know that the murder rate in places like Chicago is huge, high, absolutely unacceptably high. If the murder rate in Chicago was ever higher that would amaze me. People get shot and killed every weekend. By the end of January there had been something like 50 people shot and killed in Chicago alone.
        
        Now here is the thing – Trump puts out a figure that might be slightly an exaggeration but there is such a thing called hyperbola which is exaggeration for effect. Trump is focusing on the murder rate in Chicago which is unacceptable by any measure because he is trying to do something about it.
        
        Obama on the other hand never did anything about it and that’s because his good mate Rahm Emanuel is the mayor of Chicago. And the mainstream media will never call out Obama.
        
        So even if Trump is slightly wrong on the facts or he is using hyperbola he is still more correct than Obama. Because Trump gets to the essence of the issue. And on the essence of the issue Trump is right on most things.

  In all that the media are currently doing there are Three (3) stages:
  
  Stage 1. Mr Trump does something innocuous and quite reasonable.
  
  Stage 2. The media find out and absolute hysteria results. They are beside themselves in their joy of discovery and their desire for ‘vengence’ (although vengence for what is never, ever defined).
  
  Stage 3. A new Stage 1. occurs and the current Stage 2. is immediately dropped like a hot scone and a new Stage 2. takes its place.
  
  And on, and on, and on.
  
  The ‘game’ is very simple; Guess (a) how long the current Stage 2. will last.
  
  (b): What the next ‘Stage 2. will be (It’s usually something totally innocuous and harmless).
  
  (c) Which of the MSM will be the first to break the story on the ‘New’ Stage 2., with additional ‘points’ for guessing if it is a US, British or Australian publication.
  
  As I said, a ‘game’ of sorts. Playing it can be quite fun as you try and guess the outcomes.
  
  It is also possible to do a variation of this that I have called ‘Which Democrat will respond and for how long?’ although it does tend to loose its appeal and entertainment value when the same individuals repeatedly appear; Senator Warren is especially common – and long-speaking.
  
  I hope this may be of use – if only to break the tedium of endless the MSM stories.

I wonder how Dunne is going with his plan to try to move the school holidays to February because the weather is apparently always better.

Well, here in Kapiti during February, we have been experiencing wild swings between full on pouring rain and wind and nice calm sunny days. It really feels more like Autumn than Summer.

Today the wind is all out close to hurricane levels. Sitting in my car this morning waiting for the teenage boy to stop messing with his hair (he has photos today) so I could take him to school, it felt like the crosswind on the car wanted to pick the whole thing up, it was shaking so much during a particularly bad gust.

It’s also wet outside, though not raining right now, but it looks like it wants to.

That’s the thing with weather, it’s not necessarily predictable. But the sun is always out for long and up higher in December and January, and therefore it makes more sense to keep summer holidays in summer rather than moving them to the end of summer in an attempt to get a better summer which is never guaranteed.

Edited to add: and here is the rain…

I was interested to hear Kelvin Davies this morning on Red Radio demanding quicker access by prison staff to pepper spray canisters in emergency situations. His statement was in support of the Corrections Union demands and I found that somewhat ironic given that Davies would normally be screaming blue murder about prisoners’ rights and the inherent cruelty of using pepper sprays. It’s easy to see who is calling the shots at the Labour Party now.

Can the Maori woman who is accused of racially abusing some young Muslim women get a fair trial with the media whipping up emotions about the incident?

In the Waikato Times today we have talk of hate crimes, a Muslim academic calling for records to be kept of “hate crime”, the statements made by the Muslims who were attacked being reported as fact, and on the Fairfax web site, video clips of Huntly locals being shown clips of the incident and their reactions.

Fairfax even brings in Trump, with one local blaming him.

Media-led hysteria.

    Fernglas, do you mean that capturing something on video ends all the great and long debate about trial by media and when does news coverage “cross the line”?
    
    Video choice can be very selective, and video can easily be edited with bias. I’m not suggesting that’s the case in the Huntly incident, but making the point that video can be manipulated as much as, maybe even more, than other sorts of information – written or aural.
    
    The issue here, in my view, is should media emotion building stop when charges are laid? Not just “emotion building” but reporting anything that might hamper a fair trial.
    
    The woman blamed in the incident was arrested on Sunday afternoon. The police correctly declined further comment. Here’s what the Hooerald reported Waikato West Area Commander, Inspector Naila Hassan, as saying:
    
    “While we appreciate the video will generate public discussion, the matter is now before the courts, and police do not intend to make any further statements.”

      When Inspector Hassan spoke of “public discussion”, that might cover folk like us on Kiwiblog chattering about the case, even to a low level such as the jibbering by the likes of the Stephieboys troll syndicate.
      
      However, I raised in my initial post coverage by the regional newspaper that serves the area where the incident occurred. That is more likely to affect any court hearing.
      
      MCos raises the point in a post that follows this that the Huntly incident is likely to lead to a hearing before a judge. However, doesn’t an accused person’s right to choose a jury hearing need to be considered?

        A lawyer might be able to help us, but I think assault with a weapon at least, is regarded as a category 3 charge, because its maximum punishment is five years in prison.
        
        I think that means the person charged can choose jury trial.
        
        This is relevant to the effects of publicity.

        I see the Hooerald reports now say the charges against the woman in the Huntly Incident, and to which she pleaded guilty, were behaving in an insulting manner that was likely to cause violence and to two charges of assault.
        
        The report doesn’t say whether the assault charge was brought under the Summary Offences Act 1981 (section 9), with a maximum penalty of six months’ jail or (for more serious cases), the Crimes Act 1961 (section 196), which has a maximum penalty of up to one year’s jail.
        
        If the latter the woman would have been able to choose jury trial, and that could have been prejudiced by the media feeding frenzy.
        
        I see Radio NZ is reporting a charge of assault with a weapon was reduced to one of assault.

US Democrat politics is a laugh a minute.

On the one hand the Californian Legislature is moving forward to make the state a sanctuary state and the talk of ceding from the Union seems to be still there.
On the other hand Governor Brown is asking for Federal help from the FEMA ( Federal Emergency Management Agency) because they have had a little bit of rain and snow. Why doesn’t he show how independent they can be –maybe ask some of those snowflake Hollywood & Silicon Valley rich guys to put their hands in their pocket.

Church Leaders Statement of Concern About Deportation of Indian Students:

To the NZ Government and Public:

As leaders in our 3 Churches we wish to publicly state our concern about the proposed deportation of several students from India for falsification of their visa papers.

We do not believe they intended to deceive the NZ government in this way.

“Having looked at their situation it seems to us that these students have been duped by unscrupulous immigration agents in India.

In a previous similar cases we understand that where documentation had been deemed falsified by immigration agents then the group was allowed to stay.” Archbishop Philip Richardson said.

This points to an inconsistency in policy and an unfair treatment of this group of students.

The students were up-to- date with course fees at their educational establishments.

They could not draw NZ benefits because they are not citizens or residents.

Most of them were tax-paying workers according to their visa conditions and they were contributing to the NZ economy via their taxes, course fees and general living expenses.

We do not deny that the NZ government has a duty to carefully scrutinize immigration applications, nor that applicants have a responsibility in regard to their applications.

However these can be complicated processes and the role and legitimacy of immigration agents also needs careful scrutiny.

Immigration New Zealand seems to have erred in its processes as well.

“We urge the government to re-consider the case of these students.

We do so on the basis of concern for the human situation of the students, our Christian responsibility to care for ‘the stranger, the widow and the orphan’ among us, and a concern for just application of NZ’s immigration policy.” Cardinal John Dew said.

  Because these blokes are here on the basis of falsified English language test results, it is debatable whether they will be able to complete their qualifications here. And, even if they did, it is unlikely that their qualifications would be good enough to qualify them for residence.
  
  There is a good chance, therefore, that, if they are allowed to stay, they will end up in illegal employment with shonky employers, undermining legitimate businesses and the livelihoods of NZ residents and citizens.

The court sentenced the three men – Muhammad E., 31, Ismail A., 26, and Muhammad A., 20 – to suspended sentences for tossing firebombs at the synagogue. and causing €800 worth of damage.

I saw an awful, supposedly satirical, You Tube clip of her. The chattering classes would be best advised to tread very carefully when going in that direction. It could come back and bite them on the arse.
As one who enjoys movies such as “Blue is the Warmest Colour” I do not consider my self a prude, but the said You Tube clip went right over the top.

  I used to like Meryl Streep. A very good actress with a great body of work. Why she wants to annoy half the country as well as many many people overseas with her ultra liberal speeches is very puzzling? Doesn’t she realise that the people Hillary Clinton called “a basket of deplorables” attend movies too? Is she purposely trying to alienate half of her fan base?
  
  Very career limiting move in my opinion.
  
  Also I have to say I used to love Ashley Judd. She was wonderful in so many movies. But I realise she was playing a character. The real Ashley Judd when she is playing herself is far from wonderful, her anti Trump speech was quite frankly ridiculous.
  
  Actors and actresses should stick to acting. They have very little real world experience and wisdom and why they are given a platform to express their political views ahead of anybody else is a mystery to me?

“A woman accused of an alleged racial attack in Huntly in which a group of friends were abused for being Muslim has admitted her misdeeds.

Megan Sarah Louise Walton, 27, of no fixed abode in Auckland, appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday, charged with assault, assault using a can of alcohol as a weapon, and behaving “in an insulting manner that was likely in the circumstances to cause violence against persons”.

The assault with a weapon charge comes with a maximum penalty of five years in prison. However that charge was amended to the lesser charge of assault under the Crimes Act – which has a maximum penalty of one year in jail – and through her counsel Gerard Walsh she pleaded guilty to all three charges.”

    As a side note… Obama, the first black president, shut down the space program to such an extent that the US has to catch a ride to the space station on Russian rockets now. This happens even with the all the sanctions.
    
    And it gets worse. Much worse. The US has yet to develop any rocket engine that can match those build by the USSR and has to buy them from Russia.
    
    The Pentagon will need to buy up to 18 more Russian-built RD-180 engines to power rockets carrying U.S. military satellites into space over the next six years or so, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said in an interview on Friday.
    
    Congress banned use of the Russian RD-180 rocket engines for military use after 2019, following Russia’s annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014.
    
    But U.S. lawmakers eased the ban late last year, worried that it could drive United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co, out of business and leave only privately held SpaceX to lift satellites into space.

From the most recent episode (Feb.12th, 09:05 ~ 13:25), I particularly enjoyed Mark Latham’s commentary when he completely destroyed ‘the left’ vis-a-vis how ‘social justice’ used to be about the underclass, poverty, the financially disadvantaged etc, but these days it’s all about race, gender, sexuality and identity politics. Why? Because ‘the left’ got wealthy.

The show broadcasts live in Australia on Sundays, and the audio is usually available via the above link on Mondays.

I wonder if/when NZ will ever get around to having its equivalent of this show, and who would be our Mark, Ross and Rowan?

  Between Pauline and Cory, I wouldn’t be surprised if they will be the kingmakers at the next federal election, and it will be interesting to see if George Christensen and other like-minded MP’s change ships when Cory’s new-party policies are announced. Pauline is already making her presence felt in a big way in the upcoming W.A state elections (via preference deals). I reckon the Greens, Labor and the Liberals have got it coming to them (especially if Turnbull isn’t replaced soon with a credible conservative leader – you’re right, he’s useless).

In a press release issued October, 2014, Town said: “Ms Bright has made wild and inaccurate accusations about the Council and its probity and is using this as the basis for not paying her fair share to the ongoing running of Auckland. These assertions are completely unfounded and her actions are at the expense of all Aucklanders.”

Bright filed a defamation claim that December saying Town had tried to discredit her personally, and that his statements were designed to cause maximum distress and damage to her reputation.

Town sought a summary judgment against her to end the proceedings and in a High Court issued judgment released to media on Monday, Justice Smith granted the application.

He concluded that no properly directed jury would find any ill will in Town’s comments, nor that he took advantage of his platform, and said the defence of qualified privilege applied.

“The law is clear that a person who has been subject to a personal attack of that nature…is robustly entitled to defend his or her position,” Justice Smith said.

“In my view the words used were relatively measured when considered against the strength of some of the language used by Ms Bright in her attacks on the Council and Mr Town, and they were directed only to statements made by Ms Bright on a particular topic.”
