Yesterday I was asked to remove my hat by a very apologetic teller at my local Kiwibank branch. The only thing that my straw hat was hiding was, of course, my bald head. At the end of the transaction I asked her whether she would have asked a female customer wearing a full head-covering scarf to remove it as well. The answer? No, of course. It is Kiwibank’s policy to ask men to remove their hats but not women to remove full head covering scarves. Is this fair, is it just and is it the Kiwi way? Presumably Kiwibank would say yes.

      I thought it was good manners to remove the hat when speaking to others –
      Like speaking in foreign language asides to your friend, in the presence of others who do not understand. So that there would be no misunderstandings, no secret insults, dishonesty, etc.

    This kind of ‘smart’ comment adds little to what is, I believe, a serious issue. If you think that taking off one’s hat upon entering a shopping mall is somehow of greater import than blatant institutionalised sexism and cultural bias then I feel rather sad for you.

  It’s not sexist. A male Sikh or Orthodox Jew can also keep their head covering on. Tolerating people with different beliefs is the Kiwi way. Businesses being entitled to make these kind of rules on their own premises, may not be the Kiwi way any more but it ought to be.
  
  The bank judged that the security benefits from making Muslim women remove their head covering would not outweigh the offence taken and loss of business. But for men wearing hats the security benefits would outweigh any offence. And I see no reason to believe they were incorrect in that judgment.

  Given that security cameras usually shoot from a raised angle, hats with a brim can obscure the face. If you had a “beanie” style hat on, I suspect that you wouldn’t have been asked to take if off? Happy to be corrected.

      Well, I’m glad Nukuleka isn’t part of the ladies club here at KB. Far too grumpy and outraged easily over the smallest things. I thought he was giving us a bad rep until he outed himself as a bald man. No wonder he didn’t want to take his hat off. The sad thing is that a lot here seem to agree with him if the number of upticks is anything to go by.

    From what I can tell, the banks don’t like headgear that can obscure a person’s face from a security camera (and it’s to do with fraud as much as bank robbery).
    
    Here’s a case of Nelson *woman* who was asked to turn her sports cap around so that the brim didn’t obscure her face.

  I understood the reason for removing motorcycle helmets – to a degree – but yes, the removal of hats does seem to be going a bit far. Perhaps they want clear pictures of people on their security footage to make it easier to identify a felon – not sure…

  Presume that was the interview about Mr Thiel on Radio NZ this morning (5 mins, link below). Mr Espiner asked some hard questions, almost none of which were answered directly. But a lot of sidesteps, eg Mr L-G wants the law changed so the process is more consultative. (Whatever that means.)
  
  Mr L-G did answer one question fairly directly, eventually, namely would he have declined the application for citizenship – answer was Yes.
  
  But basically he was scrambling, and had not done his homework properly. At one point he sidestepped a question to state the timeline of events as follows. Qualified for temporary resident in 2006. Granted permanent residence in 2009. At which point Mr Espiner pointed out that it was granted on 24 July 2007.
  
  Pretty poor show. Even though Mr Espiner did not do much follow up on the hard questions, but allowed Mr L-G to waffle on about nothing much.

    Lee’s Galloway made a poor argument in railing against Thiel’s citizenship.
    The nub at the centre of Lee’s Galloways argument was a lack of consultation or more widely a lack of a conversation about Thiel’s application.
    To whom that conversation was to be directed to Lee’s Galloway was not specific.
    This does raise the spectre of all wealthy individuals wanting to immigrant here to have their applications publicly notified, debated in a public forum with perhaps the last say of approval residing with that forum.

    I don’t accept the label of “alt right” for myself, any more than I accept the label of “racist”. I regard these as smear terms from an irredeemably mendacious Left.
    
    I know nothing about “Natural News”, I merely followed a link from somewhere else to that item and it passes my own sniff test, especially in its assessment of the left and the protest mobs in the US. Even on inauguration day I recall footage of a guy wearing a Trump cap, being pushed around in the centre of an ugly mob and not allowed to escape. I don’t know what became of him and have wanted to know ever since.

    Funny enough, Eisenhower was quite happy to throw Joe McCarthy to the wolves, co-operating with the Democrats in his day and refusing to release vital records that would have shown what the truth was one way or the other.
    
    A later parallel was what Nixon tried – fully expecting the Eisenhower precedent to provide cover.

Willie Jackson has dumped the Maori Party and is set to announce he is standing for Labour instead.

The Maori broadcaster and former Alliance MP was considering standing for the Maori Party in the Tamaki Makaurau electorate, but sources said he had since been approached by Labour and now planned to stand on the list for them instead.

It is expected to be announced by Jackson at Waitangi this weekend – where the Maori Party and Mana are also expected to announce the final outcome of their arrangement in the Maori seats.

Jackson is yet to respond to a request for comment.

It is understood Jackson had met with Labour leader Andrew Little and believes he will secure a high list ranking to secure his return to Parliament.

Jackson is a close friend of Little’s advisor Matt McCartern.

It comes as Labour and the Maori Party prepare to fight it out in the Maori seats.

New Maori Party President Tukoroirangi Morgan has been wooing high profile Maori as candidates to try to win back some of the Maori seats, although so far only Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell and Howie Tamati have been selected as candidates in Waiariki and Te Tai Hauauru respectively.

It is a strategic poaching by Labour – the Maori Party had hoped Jackson’s profile would help them win back the Auckland-based Tamaki Makaurau electorate which was won by Labour’s Peeni Henare in 2014 after nine years as former Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples’ seat.

Jackson was a former Alliance colleague of Laila Harre who has now also joined Labour, but does not intend to run for Parliament this year.

First it was Laila Harre, and now it’s Willie Jackson. Will Mediaworks keep him on and give him a political forum now that his intention to try and return to Parliament has been announced? Or will Mediaworks try to maintain a pretence of neutrality?

One thing is for sure; Andrew Little wasn’t joking when he last year rejected the suggestion from Helen Clark that Labour must command the centre of the political spectrum. The likes of Jackson and Harre, as well as being political retreads, find their natural home at the extreme left of politics. The same goes for Matt McCarten.

Good on Little for nailing Labour’s colours to the mast, but he is now competing with the Greens for the hard-Left vote, and that’s NOT where elections are won and lost.

The Left here there and everywhere remind of the small child in the supermarket whose Mummy wont buy them sweets. So they bawl and wail and kick and scream. The smart Mummy walks away and ignores them. Soon they realise its all for nought and go running after Mummy.

  Given the sexual violation component of this offence, I expect the Crown to seek a sentence of Preventive Detention with an extra-long non-parole period. It is quite conceivable that he may never be released.
  
  An interesting sidelight to this is that in the Herald story, I note the defence has sought final suppression of details of some of the sexual offending because they fear for Stroobant’s safety once imprisoned. That would seem to indicate that the violation was especially sadistic. That will undopubtably strengthen the Crown’s case to have him locked up for a very long time.

        With respect to the New Zealand housing issue …
        
        In advocacy terms however, the ‘tipping point’ was the October 2012 Government response to housing affordability report ( video – media presentation ), led by then Finance Minister (now Prime Minister) Bill English … with the focus on –
        
        * land supply,
        * infrastructure financing,
        * process and
        * construction costs.
        
        The performance since that time … over four years ago … could most charitably be described as woeful.
        
        The incompetence of a supposedly centre-right government has been extremely disappointing.
        
        Mr Key had long been disruptive to progress on these issues … again, as this writer made clear soon after the major October 2012 announcement with … Housing: Mr Key – Get on the Programme .
        
        Since the October 2012 announcement, for example, Auckland housing has further inflated from about 6.7 times household income to 10.
        
        Auckland’s median house price was $427,500 when Mr Key’s Government came to office late 2008 ( refer 2009 5th Annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey ).
        
        If prices had even been held at this level … with a sound mix of land releases and progressive bond financing of infrastructure … and with Auckland’s current median household income of $83,000, Auckland’s median multiple today would be 5.1 … not the current 10.
        
        Median house prices are currently way out of control at around $830,000.
        
        Better still … if prices had been allowed to gently ease since late 2008 (as polling has illustrated most New Zealanders prefer … and currently getting underway in Greater Christchurch, led by easing rentals), then Auckland today would be well on the road to restoring housing affordability.
        
        Auckland’s house prices would now be around 4 times household incomes.
        
        The median house price would be about $330,000 … not the current stratospheric and grossly irresponsible $830,000 !

    Post WW11 we had massive immigration to Australia and New Zealand … and still managed to build affordable housing.
    
    For example the consent rate per 1000 population per annum back around 1974 was double what it is today at 14 / 1000.
    
    Go check out the New Zealand Section of this years Demographia Survey http://www.demographia.com … Fig 10 / Page 26 in particular for the consenting responsiveness of Selwyn and Waimakariri Councils following the earthquakes.
    
    If they had been as sluggish as the bureaucratically bloated and (still) severely dysfunctional Christchurch Council, Greater Christchurch Median Multiple would have rocketed from 6.1 to Aucklands 10.
    
    Instead Greater Christchurch is bucking the national trend because increasing supply means rents and prices are easing.
    
    Just focus on sorting out land supply and infrastructure financing.
    
    As Andrew Little said back 18 November 2014 in the Parliament on the day he was appointed Leader of the Labour Party … ‘Lets cut the crap.’

    This reminds me of David Horowitz’ life story – one of those rare lefties who see the light and change sides. So yesterday a few folks were almost persuading themselves it could actually be a good thing if the Greens, Labour and Winston formed the next Government, because they would promptly f*ck it up so badly that they’d be out of power at the following election and for a generation after that.

Wouldn’t be so confident of that. Bear in mind that they would inherit a very strong fiscal position, thanks to Bill English (though he wouldn’t get any) and that everything they do would be greeted with fawning delight by the media.

It could easily take more than three years for enough people to realise just how much they were f*cking it up, and by then they could have done very serious long term damage.

  It works the other way. Peters going into coalition has not only screwed NZ First in the following elections (1999, 2008), but it also consigned his major coalition partner to three terms in opposition. In Labour’s case it may be a fourth.
  
  Peters is a great opposition politician. That is his niche, that is his brand. But for that reason he is toxic to himself and his partners once he gets the baubles. His supporters desert him for the opposition, and his major partner looses support for doing a deal with such an obviously-self promoting light-weight. Plus did I mention NZ First MPs are usually even more light-weight? Who the hell wants to be a Muldoonist MP in 2017?

    I agree completely Kimbo. Peters is the consummate Opposition politician, because he makes a lot of noise, but never has to deal with the consequences of what he is noisily proposing.
    
    Conversely, his forays into Government have been a disaster. Bolger sacked him, Shipley sacked him, and Helen Clark had to stand him aside in 2008 over the Owen Glenn donation. He was subsequently found by his peers to have knowingly misled them by filing an incorrect donations return.
    
    Here’s hoping the electorate does not make him the Kingmaker after September 23rd, because there is no reason to suspect that a fourth Ministerial appointment will end any better than the first three.

    I mean, in any other party, surely he would have had people like Michael Laws getting back into parliament with him, again and again. And Terry Heffernan, Peter Brown, other Peters brothers, Rana Waitai, and all the rest of them. I think the closer people get to him in politics, the more they see the light about him.

I have just had a call from Alex (very heavy Indian accent) telling me that I am a Spark customer and my internet connection is slow…..yes I know you have all had them! BUT, I asked him if he was from Spark to prove it by telling me my address, the really scary thing is, he knew it.
He hung up when I kept asking him how he knew my address when he was obviously not from Spark.
Needless to say I am wanting for a call back from Spark, for a please explain how a scammer gets not only my phone number but my address.
Unfortunately we live in an isolated area, where we get internet via the phone line (remarkably not bad speed), which means we cannot use another provider, because if there is a problem they always blame the phone line and Spark and we have to call them (and they are bloody hopeless unless you are their customer!).

      Learning any second language in the school curriculum is invaluable. Is a far more practical way of teaching/inculcating good grammar and syntax. And Cymraeg in Wales and Maori in New Zealand gives real life outlets to learn and practice….and also enter a cross-cultural thought world. Is the same reason we teach history: to give students a resource by which they can escape the “tyranny” of their own personal/cultural/temporal perspective, context and environment. is a gateway to critical thinking skills. Doesn’t have to be about “social engineering” in the radical left-wing manner. This is New Zealand, Maori is a unique language, only spoken here. All the more reason it is the second language taught in schools – and for the reasons I’ve stated, we should teach a second language!

        Latin ? Really, do any secondary schools still offer Latin as a subject ? I have to confess that I took Latin for 2 years myself and didn’t really get past amo amat, I’m at it again, plus the declension of Motorbus. It did perhaps give me better access to important sounding phrases like sub judice and vice versa, but practically, probably little else.
        
        I see that both Avondale College and Auckland Grammar offer Latin, can’t find many others but undoubtedly some.
        
        My own view, illuminated by those of my children is that compulsory Te Reo is a complete waste of time and energy and would be a nasty exercise in sadism by those with power over children.

        The fact that it’s got a tiny pool of users is a valid reason for Maori to be down the list of languages taught in our schools.
        
        Learning a second, third, or fourth language is beneficial, but it doesn’t have to be at school. Class time is limited, and already we are falling behind in maths, which is a truly international language.
        
        Making Maori language compulsory will make it disliked, even hated by some. Make it an interesting and rewarding choice would be more valuable to help it survive. Perhaps making it a joint subject, with Indonesian, a member of the same language group, would make it more attractive. Through the internet, the kids could be paired with native Indonesian speakers learning English, and the Kiwi kids could note similarities between Indonesian/Malay and Maori. With the vast on-line resources for language learning, you wouldn’t need hundreds of Indonesian language teachers.
        
        Making Maori-Indonesian study enjoyable might entice the kids to be continue as language learners, long after they leave school.

        I hated wood work, and my skills are about as useless today as John Key’s pathetic attempt to hammer in a nail. Also, woodwork and metal craft teachers in my day were also sadists.
        
        Nonetheless, there is a reason it is in the curriculum before and in the early years of high school – so that those with the ability and inclination can gain exposure, develop their interest…and specialise in the last years of secondary school, and then on to the tertiary and/or work sector if they so choose. And those of us who wanted to escape at least got the experience of trying something new.
        
        Same with Latin and other languages, living or dead.

        Good thoughts and hard to disagree with much of that, although low Maori-speaking rates may be all the more reason to teach it. But I tend to agree that making Maori compulsory will be counter-productive. And with NCEA the way may be opening up for credit to be given for “out-of-school” learning. So if you and your family are ESOL you already have two languages. But as long as at least one other language is taught up to or around year 10.

        Kimbo, whereas I’m a tolerably good bush carpenter although I learnt very little of that at school, mostly self taught even though my father was a far better craftsman despite being an accountant by trade.
        
        Oh I don’t mind languages at all, quite approve of second or more languages being offered as options. With exceptions (like gender studies and other made up subjects) learning is a general if somewhat abstract good thing.
        
        Padriv, I also recall “Caesar ad sum iam forte”. I always appreciated trying to read (very slowly) some Caesar, rather brought home the historicity of the text; plus the fact that Caesar seems to have written very classically and simply. Whether I could have coped with Greek though…

      Kimbo, I spent years ‘learning’ French and Latin but never reached a useful level of conversational competence in the first or reading competence in the second – yet I was a conscientious student. Would I have done any better with Maori? Who knows?
      
      As instruments of cross-cultural knowledge enabling me to step outside my own culture, the two languages were highly inefficient and ineffective, and the fact that most Maoris don’t speak Maori should make us quite sceptical about the alleged links between culture and language.
      
      Expectations by its supporters that compulsory Maori will lead to a bilingual country are wildly unrealistic. People will continue to use the languages in which they are competent and ignore languages of marginal utility.
      
      Irish has been compulsory in Irish education for more than 80 years, but more than half the population say they can’t speak it; many of those who say they can, probably cannot and do not actually use it; about two percent say they use it on a daily basis outside the classroom, and even then we don’t know the quality of the language.

      It is terminally obvious now that overthrowing a dictator in Arab-Muslim countries merely results in either another brute arising, or civil war that won’t end any way other than another brute arising. Kissinger has been proved right, and not for the first time. Bush gave it a go and Obama continued the theme, and Hillary would have too. But it is time to acknowledge the failure of the experiment.

Donald had Norma place calls to the widows. He spoke to each of them and, in some cases, Trump’s call about their husband’s death was their first news of the cataclysmic event. While Trump may have booked other appointments after mine, I know that his life was spared to save our Republic and restore our economic vitality. This was the point at which I realized that Trump had been put on Earth for this larger purpose.

    There has been no confirmation (or disproving, or even, that I can find, any relative official comment) of whether Mr Thanabalasingham was, or was not, the person of the same name associated with gangs and deported from Canada.
    
    The Fire Service doesn’t appear to think the fire was suspicious. This is from the Hooerald:

Ngai Tahu now has assets of $22,950 per tribe member. It’s reached the point where the tribe should be deregistered as a charity so it can pay taxes in its tourism, property, fishing, and agriculture businesses.

A riot at the University of California at Berkeley has stopped Right-wing libertarian Milo Yiannopoulos from giving a speech.

The website Dailycal.org reports:

According to a campus statement, the violence was instigated not by students, but by a group of about 150 “masked agitators who came onto campus and interrupted an otherwise non-violent protest.”

Eddy Brock, a campus alumnus who planned to attend the Yiannopoulos event, said that the group of radical protesters allegedly punched him in the face and attacked him with rocks, leaving him with lacerations.

“It isn’t UC Berkeley and it isn’t the students,” Brock said of the violence at the protest. “(But) to me the students are complicit because they stood back and watched.”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, one of the most intelligent critics of Islam from a woman’s point of view, has described feminist Linda Sarsour, one of the organisers of the big “women’s marches”, as a supporter of sharia law.

Old tweets from Sarsour include one about Ayaan Hirsi Ali and another woman who had called for reforms of the Muslim religion:

I wish I could take their vaginas away. They don’t deserve to be women.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali, herself a victim of genital mutilation, said in a subsequent interview on Fox TV that Linda Sarsour is a fake feminist.

She asked why Sarsour hadn’t spoken up for various persecuted Muslim and Yazidi women. She said 140 million women had been subject to genital mutilation.

Sarsour is a Palestinian-American who was wed in an arranged marriage at age 17.

  Another prominent speaker on the “women’s march’ was Donna Hylton who, when she was younger, helped in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of a gay man.
  
  The Women’s March on Washington last week featured as a speaker convicted felon Donna Hylton who, along with several others, kidnapped a man and then tortured him to death.
  
  Hylton, along with three men and three other women, kidnapped 62-year-old real-estate broker Thomas Vigliarolo and held him for ransom, before eventually killing him. As noted in a 1995 Psychology Today article, when asked about forcibly sodomizing the victim with a three foot steel pole, one of Hylton’s accomplices replied: “He was a homo anyway.”
  
  Speaking about Hylton, New York City Detective William Spurling told Psychology Today: “I couldn’t believe this girl who was so intelligent and nice-looking could be so unemotional about what she was telling me she and her friends had done. They’d squeezed the victim’s testicles with a pair of pliers, beat him, burned him.”
