The second in a series of great quotes from US Presidents.

This time it’s Dwight D. Eisenhower:

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than thirty cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of sixty thousand population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than eight thousand people.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”

Ike delivered this speech to the American Society of Newspaper Editors on the 16th of April 1953. It was his first formal address to the American people as President and he titled it “Chance for Peace.”

The speech was delivered at a critical historical moment. Joseph Stalin had been dead six weeks, and hopes were rising that the new Soviet leadership would be less belligerent. The Korean War was near its final stalemate. The United States had announced the world’s first hydrogen bomb in January.

By expressing the cost of weapons in schools, homes, and hospitals, Eisenhower hoped the Kremlin might abandon the march toward armed competition that he feared would bankrupt both countries. He urged Soviet leaders to see that the Cold War and its costs were not inevitable.

Sadly things didn’t turn out as Ike hoped. In June the Soviets sent soldiers into East Berlin to crush a workers’ uprising. In August they unveiled their own hydrogen bomb. That same month the CIA engineered a coup to remove Iran’s democratically-elected prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh.

When Moscow ignored his warning and pressed forward with plans to extend its international reach, Ike, building on a foundation laid by Harry Truman, committed America to what he knew would be a long and costly confrontation. Seven U.S. presidents, Democrats and Republicans, followed Truman and Ike’s lead. But when Soviet communism finally collapsed, the United States entered a period where it had no unifying grand strategy … which is a state that continues through to Trump’s presidency today.

  Eisenhower was an interesting President. A true example of a realistic anti-war top soldier who had seen it all.
  
  But he may have been a bit soft on Communism, after all, the Russians were on “our side” in the war; the oddest thing Ike did (for a Republican President) was take the side of the Democrats and refuse the release of some vital records that would have decided between Joe McCarthy and his prosecutors, who was factually in the right.
  
  A logical explanation for throwing McCarthy to the wolves, admitted by a CIA chief decades later, was that intelligence penetration of Soviet espionage networks would have been too compromised had Ike released the records. McCarthy was right, but was foolishly blowing the cover on something the CIA already had in hand, and could have used to advantage for counter-espionage.

    I think Ike was keenly aware of needing to focus on building a better America, and not wasting the country’s energy and assets on militarism and witch hunts. And I think Ike was a diplomat who hoped that the Soviets could be cajoled into a calmer and less confrontational path (as this speech I’ve quoted sets out).
    
    My take is that Ike showed a lot of restraint with Joe McCarthy, in the face of quite a lot of provocation.

“Hell has no fury for women scorned.” How appropiate for NZs Liebour Party. The actions of their so called trade union controlled “Leader” a person with the name of Mr 7% alias Angry Andy Little. Little’s all encompassing and selection of Willie Jackson to get a free ride onto the list as an Mp over many women in the party,has exposed the thin veneer of harmony and caused it to fracture. The exposure shows schisms ,heresies,and malice,againt the dastardly actions of Little, and how he set out to deceive the selection over other more qualified participants,than a washed up flap jaw wee pest like Willie Jackson,by offering him a free ride into parliament ,on the so called list system.

Two asylum seekers have been charged with molesting five girls between the ages of 12 to 14 at a German swimming pool.

A local police report from the Ratzeburg force states the suspects were two ‘southern-looking’ men who molested them under the water. The men are 23 and 34 years old and are said to be asylum seekers living in Bad Oldesloe in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The media are tying themselves in knots over their anti Trump hysteria. Karl du Fresne has covered it well on his blog.

The media and police initially wouldn’t report the Cologne rapefest and often refuses to identify the ethnicity of offenders and when we do get a whistleblower he is cast as a racist.From Sweden

  One alternative media journo who interviewed a few uni students on US college campuses, discovered that the students were opposed to Trump’s “Muslim ban”, and also believed that it was a “Muslim ban”, period, knowing nothing about a list of 7 specific countries, and the ban’s applicability to non-Muslims from those countries.
  
  What we are facing is dangerous ignorance from the young masses in the era of Twitter, slogans, sound bites, short attention spans, blocked ears and hypnotic mass chanting.

  I am finding it extraordinary that the Herald has been publishing excellent letters from one Jay Pegler recently. This morning, Pegler’s letter includes:
  
  “…As long as his (Trump’s) policies rest on a reassertion of common sense, their (the media’s) propaganda masquerading as journalism has no power. Having been burned so many times by political correctness, the people know that it will not keep them safe…The Screen Actor’s Guild won’t keep them safe. I see management of TV3 has decided to spend a load of cash on a new logo. No longer is it ‘TV3’ but something resembling a hieroglyphic.

Advice for free, TV3: You can wrap a dog turd in glitter but it’s still a turd. Any spare cash should have been spent on improving content / calibre of staff, rather than on a facelift. A complete WOFTAM.

Glad I’m not a shareholder.

I’m not going to turn this into a debate on who benefits from our current monetary system of infinite paper money, created out of thin air, backed by nothing and loaned out at interest…….. but instead I’d like to draw readers attention to what I see as gross inconsistencies.

If I discuss, with evidence, the role of individual Jews like the Rothschilds in Banking, Soros in mass immigration and the scores of Jews involved in Bolshevism/Marxism etc. then I’m tarred with the “Anti-semitism” tag as people try and shut such debate down.

This is in stark contrast with say the roles of individuals in American Slavery, Colonialism German WWII actions, then it is perfectly acceptable, nay encouraged, to paint all of the entirety of white nations and all their descendants of the world as guilty and requiring collective punishment?

Apologies again for the crime of “noticing” and “observing” for those that I’ve triggered.

  Mind you, the politically correct establishment in the rest of the west doesn’t seem to bother anywhere near as much about criticism of Jews, as it does about criticism of stroppy Muslim immigrants.
  
  Germany might be just a bit different to the rest of the west, actually having perpetrated the Holocaust and having a certain obligation regarding anti-semitism.

      Equally, our PM isn’t Jewish. So the issue was their attempt to relate such things as being ‘bad’. Showed the bastards involved for being ignorant shites (just like the morons who can’t get a swastika the right way round).
      
      There are some great jokes out there, which can be funny, and can poke fun at religion, nationality, etc. Ignorant ‘humour’ is just ignorant (by comparison, have you heard the one about the Scotsman, the Dutchman, and the Jew who walked into a pub? Every Scotsman, Dutchman, and Jew I’ve known has laughed at it)

  And the issue is anti-Semitic if you put into context of ‘the Jews’ (or even ‘individual Jews’). Whether you like or dislike the Rothschilds or Soros, the issue is not racial or ethnic, but rather personal. Why they receive any real attention is a question I’ll raise (there are plenty of people in the world, including very powerful ones, why a few current medium-weights).
  
  Thus, using inflammatory language, or concentrating on issues like ethnicity, which you don’t profess to care about, would appear to be the problem, non? You can make a case for certain members of the Rothschild family being creeps (Nathaniel is not my favourite chappy, particularly after that Osbourne nonsense), but it has nothing to do with ‘the Rothschilds’ nor with them being Jews or otherwise.

  Under Labour rules, the Unions are strong enough to pretty much trump any other interest groups unless the feminists and gays take over too.
  
  Since more females are union members than males, there is a chance of the a feminist take-over in the unions too. In that case Andy is out on his ear.

      That’s the point of elections. They are essentially the free market test.
      
      If a baker makes bread that people don’t want to buy, then the baker changes the recipe until we do buy the bread.
      
      Labour offer up goods and we either buy them (vote for them) or we don’t. If we don’t buy then then Labour should change the recipe until we do buy it.
      
      Labou’re problem is that they don’t listen to the feedback.
      
      If they were that baker it would go something like this: Nobody is buying our new turd flavoured bread, so let’s increase the amount of turd we put in. Naah, that’s still not working …. add more turd!

        One problem with your analogy, and it’s a big one for Labour
        
        When my once popular baker changes hands and is run by a muppet who feeds me turd bread, I tend to be very cautious about going back, even if someone else takes over.
        
        If it changes hands several times, each ‘baker’ worse than the one before I eventually give up and never go back.

      It is not the 1950/60s now where most Parents told or advised their children to vote Labour as they were seen as the Party for the working man. In my time I voted once for Labour on my fathers advise but after leaving home my vote went to National as the Unions even in them days controlled Labour but not like they do today.

        Stephie, I think you miss the point.
        
        The point is that Labour is branding itself as the party gays should vote for because they are gay and that workers should vote for because they are workers and feminists should vote for because they are female and that Pacifica should vote for because they are Pacifica. ie. identity politics, not policy driven politics.
        
        The problem is that Greens are doing exactly the same thing and fighting over exactly the same identity base.
        
        In National nobody cares if you’re gay or feminist or whatever.

  But admitting differences in genetic make-up between races on any point, is the thin edge of the wedge to the politically correct establishment.
  
  For that matter, even the differences between individuals genetic make-up is something the mainstream medical profession ignores. Some of us Pakehas are also prone to sugar-related diseases and do better without it.
  
  But the thing that annoys me the most, is that they adopt a standard drug to treat X Y or Z condition, when the trials of it showed it worked for 60, 70, 80 percent of trial groups. I argue that it is almost a certainty that those for whom it will work and won’t work, will be identifiable on the basis of common genetic markers such as blood type. But the medical profession does not work this way, so you will be prescribed the one fix-it drug and if you are among the 30% for whom it won’t work, you are out of luck. The doctors will just give up on you.

    Well, in this, there is a very simple problem. What do we mean by ‘genetics’. Contraire to how some people talk, nowadays, we aren’t made up of ‘a mixture’ of our ‘ancestors’. We are, actually, made up of binary chromosomes. As such, my children got one of my chromosomes. My daughter, by definition, is related (in one chromosome) to my mother, whereas my boys are related (in one chromosome) to my father. The construct of ancestry and family are not ‘genetic’, as some people seem to think (you aren’t ‘1/8th X’ – you are always two halves).
    
    Thus, ‘race’ is a tricky beggar. However, certain groups do have a tendency to perpetuate certain traits (but hence why, through compound intermixing over thousands of years, we don’t all suffer from the same diseases ‘by race’).
    
    Makes it very funny when people try to explain why they don’t suffer from something that won’t have passed down, as they aren’t actually genetically linked to the person of the race they’re professing to belong… 🙂 (by comparison, familial connection is a very different matter)

      Obvious examples of characteristics that have been perpetuated in certain races, can be found in physique and sporting prowess. But then it gets risky to talk about inherited ability to excel at algebra, say. Same for gender differences.
      
      I have become aware during my life, and doubtless many people do, of things I am just not made for. Gymnastics, for example, or ballet dancing. Swimming was always fine though. I am good at chess but not at the Rubik Cube. And so on. Most of us have no problem admitting at least some things we are just plain no good at.
      
      But what we have at the establishment level, is a systematized, PC-based denial of basic obvious differences when they relate to a particular identity group. Some things may be environment related, and may change over time – NZ-Asian All Blacks? But will forcing square pegs into round holes, eg by race-based quotas, ultimately help or hinder?

        The issue is that the genetics will, in the longer-term, become blurred. Gender specific issues link directly to the 23rd Chromosome, but the others are a free-for-all and can (from memory) get re-sequenced. So as you intermix, you do get greater ‘diversity’, but that is my very point about genetics being over-played. My children are (in the last 3 generations) a mixture of 1 Jew, 1 Scotsman, and 2 English (1 Cornish, 1 Yorkshire Lass) on my side, and 3 Russians (at least 1 of some form of Volksdeutsch) and 1 Uzbek. The traits that are gender specific (which does make a huge difference, obviously) are probably the most prominent.
        
        The issue becomes, at the moment, we still have more ‘well-defined’ races, but as time goes on, that will erode, even if we maintain concepts of ‘ethnicity’ (just look at ‘white’ people in the States – once upon a time the Italians, English, and German peoples would have clearly delineated themselves).
        
        So, as noted, it’s a very tricky business. And it’s made worse by the desire to oversimplify these things (there ‘is’ race, as a continual feature, or ‘there is no such thing’, while at the moment there are logical groupings). To ignore current groups is damned silly (as we do know that people who are less inter-mixed are more likely to show specific traits), but to demand they are monolithic is equally as silly (as they’re just an approximation).

      Polynesians especially have been stuck in their island nations for several thousand years until very recently.

        And any regular follower of KB will know that I hold that it is culture that ultimately makes all the difference. But it is absurd to deny genetic inheritance, at the individual level as much as anything else. The “you can do anything if you believe in yourself” theory is nonsense. One needs to be realistic about what one’s inheritance is optimised for. There was no way I was ever going to be a gymnast or ballet dancer, for example. Rugby player, quite possibly, had I been keen on it. But then short-sightedness became another limitation – you can’t do just “anything” when you need eye correction. And that, too, guess what – runs in my family.
        
        But when it comes to endeavours of the intellect, the establishment gets all touchy-feely about reality. Not just on genetic inheritance, but cultural environment as well. Some cultural environments do stunt brain development. This is why the lifting of a population’s level of achievement in consequence of a widespread change of culture, can take 3 or more generations.

    I’m not judging that or saying it is good or bad. It is just the facts. If we try pretend these factors don’t exist we don’t get anywhere trying to analyse the data.
    
    If different groups of people are prone to different illnesses at different rates then changing demographics are going to change health outcomes.
    
    California’s population of Europeans and Blacks has decreased, so we can expect that those diseases which afflict Blacks and Europeans have reduced.
    
    The same is also true of changing age demographics. Older people have higher cancer rates than young people, therefore we can expect cancers to increase when ages increase.
    
    It’s not racism/agism – just facts.

American tourist cold and wet after getting lost at Wairere Falls

A missing American tourist who got lost on a popular Waikato walking track has been found “cold and wet” by searchers.

Specialist search and rescue teams scoured the Wairere Falls Track near Matamata late into the night after the man in his 30s failed to meet up with a friend.

A police spokeswoman said the pair had earlier split up to walk separate routes but planned to meet later at their car.

When the man failed to return, the alarm was raised about 8.30pm.

Land, Search and Rescue crew members found the man just before midnight.

“It appears he took a wrong turn and got lost,” said the spokeswoman.

“He was cold and wet but unharmed.”

  Visitors are sometimes poorly advised or not advised at all.
  
  When my then wife, baby and I came to NZ in 2003, we visited Marahau in July. We decided to take a water taxi to Anchorage Bay and walk back. Granted, we should probably have checked ourselves, but no one told us that starting the walk back at 2 pm was a bad idea.
  
  The last hour or so was in complete darkness and we had no idea how far we still had to go. Just as well the track isn’t the roughest around.
  
  When we talked about it to the woman in the taxi booking office the following day, all she said was “well, my son can run it in less than an hour”.

You have to laugh really at his back track when put under pressure on the Willie Jackson Saga and then realise how inept and weak he was as a candidate for the seat of New Plymouth, Labour President in raising Funds that have left them begging, and a Union Chief that watched the Union Member ship lose the greatest number of members in the history of the Union Movement under his Leadership. Not bad for some one that has a track record of Failure.

These demands are incompatible. NZ’s infrastructure is creaking – in housing, in health, in roading, and in many public utilities. Growth in GDP per capita has slowed to near steady, and export performance continues to be insufficient to balance external payments.

You cannot have both more people and more welfare and social spending, let alone maintain current living standards without solid economic growth measured in GDP per capita. If we aren’t going to have strong economic growth that means it’s necessary to slow intake of people from abroad.
