Abnormally high ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean have been blamed for one of Peru’s worst floods in recent memory, which killed 12 people, destroyed homes and swept away trucks and buses along the usually arid seaboard.

The disaster – which came after a period of severe drought – caught the authorities by surprise and fuelled criticism that the country is ill-prepared for the growing challenges of climate change.

Scientists accused Peruvian authorities of ignoring a warning to countries in the region that there was a severe risk of drought, and opposition politicians have accused the government of failing to respond adequately to forecasts of increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

A spokesman for the Peruvian meteorological agency said it was premature to attribute the floods to climate change though there are studies which suggest El Niño phenomenon will become more frequent as a result of global warming.

    What is the point of your post? Consider a basic logical pathway
    1. The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has roughly doubled from 250 to 450 ppm since the industrial revolution.
    2. The only, and universally agreed explanation, is the burning of fuel by humans.
    3. CO2 traps heat.
    
    Therefore global warming exists and is man made during this particular period in history.
    
    Why not use this as a starting point in answering William of Ockham’s post?

    The killer point is that this doubling in a few hundred years is 1000 times the rate ever experienced in the planet’s history. This presumably includes epidemics of volcanic activity.
    Therefore:
    
    Man’s activity is creating a difference to climate and sea level at 1000 times the normal rate.
    And it is the melting of ice on land that raises sea level far more than thermal expansion of the ocean.
    I am no expert, but some key data points lodge in my mind.

        I am not a climate activist. There is no point in New Zealand unless living somewhere like Omaha, the converse is pragmatically true, we are immune to all effects.
        It is just the brain detached way you react to posts that have substance that is disturbing.
        Of course conspiracy theories are only that if the case argued is already factually settled, so calling me a conspiracy theorist on crime is temporary, as you will see this year as the Tamihere and Lundy cases unravel in courts of law. What a surprise, “Generation Snowflake” is alive in NZ. Seems the Warriors Rugby League team has caught the disease. Last nights performance against a pussy cat bulldogs team had to be seen to be believed. The “warriors” have been going 22 years,and last nights performance was a disgrace,and heads should roll,maybe the “term free range”,should also be investigated with the “warriors”,when the inquiry into chickens takes place. .

The student visa scheme is a rort and provides no value to NZ

Last night I was leaving work and there was a young Indian man at reception. I asked him if I could help and he asked if we had any jobs, which I said sorry no we don’t. He kept pressing me about having one for him and ended up leaving me his CV.

Now I applaud his drive and getting out there as there is many young NZ born people who sit on their arse.

However apart from some technical college in India which he highlighted he got 69% pass mark from, he has been doing a network and server course at one of those no name Queen Street international education places. He is currently working at a produce place packing fruit and veges and “supporting email”.

Now I’m not against immigrants or foreigners coming to NZ. I’m married to one and employ lots at work. However the “skilled” category is just a joke if you look at the quality of people coming in and the education for visa scheme is even worse. There are a lot of people being given easy access to this country that provide no positive benefit.

        I saw in a small provincial town, about a decade ago, where 2 local Maori families had taken on the running of 2 dairies.
        
        The interesting thing was that discipline was gained by the younger staff. Rosters worked out and adhered too. Early morning starts, and late evening finishes.
        Oh they did have their moments, learn from mistakes, but one could see that over time, that in that business they had to be on the go to service their customers, nor eat the profits.
        
        They were both run by respected elders, so the young staff were between a rock and a hard place, with all that critical family and peer pressure to make things work.
        
        There was competition and innovation was great,
        Like not only the standard fish and chips etc., but also kumara, pumpkin, parsnip chips. Good home made pies, marinated meat in garlic sauce.
        Always a great change and treat, particularly for out of towners.
        
        It is all gone now, Indians and Cambodians and Lebanese competitively run the businesses, with plenty of ‘V’ cola like drinks, potato chips.
        It is very noticeable that their staff are employed on ethnic lines, and often new to NZ.
        So now young locals seem to be just wandering the streets.
        
        It is difficult to give a hand up for the ones that are already in our community, so it was great to be able to support the ones that were making a difference, setting an example for others that they can do it, with some stick-ability, discipline.
        One could see the change in some of the young ones serving behind the till, as confidence in themselves improved.
        They were learning the inside skills of running a business with experience, consequences, discipline which can not be taught any other way.
        Balancing the till, gst, paye returns, food registration and licence fees, cleanliness standards, etc.
        That would apply in their lives, perhaps having fewer children,
        Feeding a dog costs money, then the hassle/cost of dog registration.
        Figuring that ‘smokes’ end up costing a lot of money.
        The GDP improved, as the young ones were working, and learning.
        Much better than lowering educational levels to get more ‘pass rates’. Basic arithmetic needed, gives greater understanding of mathematics.
        Language has to be more careful, when fronting the public.
        
        Robbing the till only robs your own whanau, and nothing is more fearsome than an aroused kaumatua.
        Loyality to the whanau is great, and that loyalty also extended to the good-will of that shop, and so to the public.
        All that can not be learned at school.
        
        Why do we not support the ones that are here?
        We do. Of course pay them the bene…

        Are you and the Dr./technician happy to pay increased taxes for the other ones on the benefit, plus their health issues that use a lot of those Dr. skills/costs up.
        So just import more seems from overseas, seems to be your answer.
        
        I have been worried that government have been wasting money on benefits, housing,etc..
        Seeing a glimpse of some our locals changing and raising themselves and surrounding family up is great.
        
        A part of that is when they are actively involved like in a small dairy business.
        
        I pointed out where some were starting to lift them selves out of the quagmire, and I know some that have gone on upward from those families.
        
        There is fundamental short fall of Drs./technicians, but we really need better basic education, better standards. life skills, experience, apprenticeships, mentors for our own to develop, instead of preferring an overseas technician.
        
        A very difficult thing to do, but expectations of them to be able to achieve these things should be expected/demanded, particularly of them selves.

        Simpleton 1: I don’t mind at all paying taxes for immigrants who have only 1 to 3 kids and do a good job educating them.
        They will repay those taxes many times over.
        What I do mind is paying taxes for parents of 10 to 14 kids (and I meet them all the time ) who don’t bother to educate their kids and in fact make them babysit the younger kids when they should be in school.
        BTW….I just gave $5 to a Maori kid who said he was hungry.
        He took off as I was trying to tell him about the value of a trade.

        Oh happy to pay taxes for your self and chosen ones, but how do you divide your taxes up between those 1-3 and not the other 10-14 kids?
        
        Hey lets try something new. There seems to be a better neighbour, plus having a spare Dr and nurse/technician around.
        
        I know of the houses some of them have come from, and kids looking after kids, being meal tickets for the different partners. A very difficult cycle to break.
        
        The problem is that people want to own them, for their “bread ticket”, like political parties, unions, social welfare empires.
        
        The other part is the insidious peer pressure of “tall poppy” to cut down any one likely to get ahead. It is an attitude that is soul destroying.
        
        You could be right, to sort of throw those kids out to a Calcutta slum, no benefits, but still where no ones starves; there is always work; proviso is that they must work at something.
        Some rise up and even become millionaires.
        Do you see that working better?
        
        So would there be no problem with gangs then? as they learn to trade?.
        
        How much of your money are you prepared to pay for security? and taxes?
        
        Dam it, I know there is no easy answer, and I commend you for trying even with $5.00 as we all live and learn.
        That is why I was supportive of the locals getting up and having a go. I know they really had their ups and downs, particularly with their own whanau, but I could see some break through.
        
        It is persistence, consistence and perhaps some customizing, but the principles always remain the same. Understanding, motivation, evolving to self discipline, taking the small steps, so that horizons will expand.
        
        I just feel that we should not chuck our own out, and bring in whole lot of others.
        You would not do that with your own kids.

  No positive benefits? They have to live somewhere so that means housing has to be built. They have to use roads and footpaths and water so that means infrastructure has to be built/maintained/improved.
  
  That’s economic progress, that’s growth, that’s good.
  
  He may not have the job he wants but at least he won’t be lonely. Thousands more of his cobbers will join him this year. And there you go, activity for you too – getting a bigger cupboard to store random CVs or the effort of putting them in the rubbish

      I prefer Indians to the natives, especially as neighbours.
      1) they have only 1 or 2 kids and educate them well (not 10 plus destined for gang membership or the DPB).
      2) they don’t rob us blind.
      3) they don’t keep us up at night with drunken parties
      4) they don’t keep pit bulls that threaten to take our hand off when clearing the letterbox
      5) they don’t beat up their wives on the lawn when drunk
      6) they don’t upset us calling their little girls the “c” word.
      So great to have Indian neighbours.

        I recently overnighted at Palmerston North Hospital and my nurses were 2 Indian men from Northern India. They were efficient and good natured and kind. One had been here 6 years, the other 8. They had 2 kids apiece and one had a mum who lived with the family. They like living in New Zealand. I awarded them A1 citizenship.

    As Jack5 states we have limited supply available to support immigrant growth.
    
    So why don’t we do what you normally do when demand massively exceeds supply, you put your prices up or in this case set a much higher benchmark for entry criteria.
    
    You can’t tell me paying $20K to some unknown education provider in Queen St for a Windows Server course is a good return on investment for NZ when it comes with a golden work permit?
    
    Or should we just open the gates completely?

  Approximately 20 years ago, I met a young Indian student who was trying very hard to stay in NZ; despite the fact that his course had finished, his visa had expired and he had no work prospects, Having experienced Western civilization, he did NOT want to go back to India. Others had made very serious efforts to help him with work etc., but all had ended in tears. Putting it succinctly, it was discovered that he couldn’t be trusted, and had to be supervised constantly. Eventually (and to the sighs of relief of those who had tried to assist) he was put on a place in Auckland, en-route to Bombay. He didn’t make it beyond Australia!! Evidently he got off the aircraft at Sydney and walked out of the terminal; never to be seen again…
  
  As far as I am aware, he is still at large, and now an ‘illegal’ in Australia.
  
  I subsequently had a conversation with Immigration NZ about him and was told that NZ Immigration policy at the time was not to accept Indian students into NZ as they were simply too much trouble and could not be trusted to either complete their courses or go back home when they had to do so – a situation confirming what I relate above.
  
  Evidently things have changed in respect of ‘policy’ towards Indian students, but, as recent events prove, the individuals themselves have not.

      GoVege smears NZ and Australian servicemen as thieves and praises the Indians flooding into NZ on the student entry rort. At least the Aussies and Kiwis didn’t switch sides like many of the Indians fighting in Burma.
      
      What is going to happen is that as the Asian proportion of the NZ population rises, Australia will close off open entry from NZ. Then young Indians will be really popular in NZ.
      
      NZ is a back door to Australia, and many of the Asians coming to NZ on the student visa rort plan to move to Australia when they get NZ residency.

        What I observe about Indians is they work hard, and are seldom in receipt of the dole.

        What 40,000? There were about 20,000 NZ’ers left in North Africa then Italy after Australia pulled back its troops to help the Americans fight Japan.
        
        GoVege’s source may be Martyn Thompson, nephew of a Kiwi soldier in North Africa, who interviewed veterans and wrote a book.
        
        In a report about this in the Hooerald in 2005 is this: “”Tiny Freyberg and his 40,000 thieves,” said one wit.” Freyberg didn’t have 40,000 men – more like half that number.
        
        What evidence is there that NZ soldiers were any more grabbing of loot and lost property than any other Allied Army? Read some of the US marine memoirs of the Pacific War, and you will find the marines were quick to “lift” gear, cigars, liquor etc. from other US services. Below is a link to a report about some real Allied thieves in Italy, and they were from the U.S. Army.
        
        Can I take it that, as a prominent vegan or vegetarian, GoVege is a pacifist? I trust that you are a New Zealander, GoVege. If your smears of NZ servicemen came from a foreigner, that would really get up some NZ nostrils.
        
        GoVege can praise Indians, and there are many Indians of good character who are good citizens, but there are also some like the guy on the West Coast who seems to be kingpin in a sewerage-system contract being awarded to the recently arrived owner of an Auckland cake shop.

When are the Media and Labour going to except that when Jacinda Ardern makes statements like this a week before Nicky Kaye responded that she is open to the criticism. Ardern’s words were “I have drafted a Private Members bill that is better than any thing National have done in its time in Government and i won’t see it implemented” ,now if you want to throw mud you need to be prepared for some to come back. Why would the media print this the day after she was elected Deputy Leader of Labour and then take a swipe at National and Kaye when Ardern set the ball in motion.

    Nowadays, as more mixed race children (or ethnically diverse for those more PC than I) and skin colour seems to becoming more lighter, than darker, it’s common practice amongst Maori to check for what use to be called a Mongolian spot on our kids bum. Sure sign of mixed blood heritage.
    
    Because I’m so fair skinned I recall my mother telling me that I must tell my kids to tell their kids and so on, about their mixed heritage, because those “throw backs” can skip generations and cause problems for relationships in the future.

        It’s like a dark bruise that appears normally on a new bornes bum, at the top of the cheeks. Most dark skinned colour races are born with it and it normally disappears within a year.
        
        I remember my ex mother in law for was a young woman during the 2nd world war recalling how a few of her friends who had liaisons with American soldiers ended up with dark skinned babies, having no idea that their beaus were of mixed heritage.     What I find bizarre is the idea that some sort of “agenda” is necessary. For example, inter-group mixing in NZ has been going on since the early ships, the whalers, and the gum-diggers.   I can remember when I was a young lad around 1950 going to a circus in Auckland and looking at some strange looking dark skin people who were on display. Some were obviously dwarfs dressed in strange clothing. Others wore loin cloths and I think some had spears. Not sure if they were in their native clothing or just dressed for the occasion. What ever they were supposed to be they sure scared me as my parents later told me I had burst into tears.

      I still have vivid memories of an exhibit who did not have any legs and I think he was cut off at the waist. I believe that some how he did not have hips or a pelvis. Not sure how….
      
      He used his arms to support his half body with his hands as feet.
      
      I remember he had a white shirt and wore a red hat that I think is called a fez. I have never forgotten this as he had real strange eyes that were almost pleading.

Yes, in the sense I was raised in family where we were encouraged to show empathy , tolerance and understanding for those who are different like Jews and Negroes ( of whom you detest , fear and hate ) Presumably it was otherwise in your household .

My children have a mother who is Asian and for whom tolerance of diversity has become natural as per my upbringing. The same with both our neighbourhood and the schools they attended . All a world away from you’re severely limited world of bigotry and hate .

Human Zoos ? Thought of opening yours with cardbaord cutouts of all those races ( including of course Jews ) whom you so fear and hate ?

        IQ scores measure one’s proficiency in IQ tests. The next step is to look for correlations (at this point, politics steps in and the reviews become interesting.)
        I would be more in favor of tests that measure attributes such as:
        – Ability to defer gratification
        – Ability to “turn the other cheek” (when insulted alone)
        – Ability to “turn the other cheek” (when insulted in front of one’s peers)
        – Ability to retrain oneself from striking one’s partner
        – Level to which one gives positive affirmation to one’s partner
        – Degree that one sacrifices self for one’s nuclear family
        – Level of concern that one has for offspring’s scholastic attainment level
        – Importance of “monogamy with one’s partner”
        – Level of concern for welfare of parents in their old age

        But what if their SOCIETIES do? many years ago i was the unfortunate witness to a romance between a young couple which was destroyed totally by the young lady’s ethnic group. he was a European New Zealander, she was Fijian Indian. They made a lovely couple. Both in their late ’20’s. They were intending to marry. NOT SO said her parents. Indian girls are to marry ONLY Indian me! As onlookers I and my fellow staff-members couldn’t believe what we were seeing; and this in the late ‘liberated; Twentieth century.         Despite all the rhetoric about ‘liberation’ by the feminists, it is noticeable that they do not (dare?) tackle this issue, and, indeed, doubt that they would have the courage to do so.

        I have no answer, in the short term, for how to break down cultural prejudices against living with and marrying folks from different groups, especially if folks intend living within a prejudiced community.

  There is rumour too that the judge was also a classmate of Obama at law school. If so, did Obama have a have a prior hand in drafting the document? It is reported that Obama was secretly in Hawaii for two days prior to the judgment.

Just because you have lots of something doesn’t mean it should be free. Saudi Arabia has shit loads of oil, do they allow companies to pay a $100 consent fee and then export what they want.

Water is a NZ resource for the benefit of NZ residents. If someone else wants to export it pay a fucken royalty per litre!

  Regional Councils issue Resource Consents for water extraction. They are free to set their own fees and conditions (as do Watercare). Write to them if you don’t like what is happening – they have elections every three years so may take notice if enough people agree with you.
  
  Meanwhile, companies getting off their bums and earning funds exporting and employing people who get paid wages and pay tax and paying tax on their profits seem to be doing ok.

    The Christchurch rental market is not typical. It is flooded with with homes where the owners have taken an EQC settlemement and quit. These sell cheaply in a fixed or semi-fixed state and many are still habitable although not insurable. The rents may actually be high in the circumstances.

But this is why you get lots of places in Vancover especially which remain vacant. Because it’s a hedge move by the owner and he doesn’t care about the return.
  
  That’s just a tiny example but he’s detected an 86 year cycle which correlates to the day with various events we’ve seen since the 1980’s.
  
  It’s very interesting. While real estate is only peripheral to his analysis, obviously property bubbles are one of the sectors, along with bonds, securities and public vs private capital movements too.
  
  Warning to those with pensions: the cycle is showing you’re going to lose em because they’re facing unsustainable withdrawals which can’t be funded by the upcoming millenials/post-millenials. You should take a look at what he says, too.

I suppose everyone saw the Irish PM’s speech about immigration, and the Irish coming to America, blah, blah, blah. It is in no way the same thing. It only seems common sense to most of us to temporarily restrict immigration from Islamic countries that hate our culture and promote terrorism. Like it or not, most terrorist acts are committed by followers of Islam. It’s just a fact.

Creating a false equivalence between Irish immigration in the 1800s and 1900s and Islamic immigration today helps no one.

How petty can you get? At a veteran’s hospital in America there are supposed to be two portraits hung in the hallway – one of the president of the United States and one of the VA Secretary. Since Obama left office, the wall had been blank, despite the vets asking for new photos. Nothing was done about it, so the vets put up new pictures themselves, only for hospital staff to follow along behind and take them straight down.

“Two blank holes, it’s been 60 something days now [since the inauguration],” Army veteran Beau Brumfield said. “The Veterans Administration has been asked about it a few times, the local VA hospital has been, and they haven’t had any real reason other than they didn’t have the picture, which is readily available.”

“That’s the person who would ultimately give the order for us to put our lives in danger and we believe that his picture should be displayed there proudly,” another vet, John Rourke, said.

So, they got together with other vets and contacted their Congressman Brian Mast and took matters into their own hands. The group came to the hospital with the prints of Trump and Schulkin and filled those “two blank holes.”

“Proud of the fact that the local vet community got it done. We walked in there, we made it happen,” Brumfield said. “It was non-confrontational. It was nonpolitical. We just wanted to see it happen.”

However, their actions were in vain as officials at the hospital came along behind them and immediately took down the portraits. A spokesperson said what the veterans did was “inappropriate” and said they took cell phone footage in violation of patients’ rights. The spokesperson also said the photos were not official and must come from the central office.

The first part of The Nation this morning was interesting. We then had this thing about homosexuals demanding compensation for historic convictions. We are talking about 1000 over many years.

I would like to know what the details of those convictions. If someone was convicted of having sex in a public place including a cubicle in a public toilet they should not get anything compo or even their record wiped. If some aged 30 was have sex with a 16 year old boy which is now legal I would not be happy paying him one dollar.

Small enough to fit into a car parking space when folded up, the one-seater passenger drones made by Chinese company Ehang are set to start picking up passengers in July this year, according to Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA).

The electrically powered driverless drones — named Ehang 184 — have already been seen hovering above the sand dunes near the city’s airfield during test flights.

      Be good if you could find it rc, because the Madrid Tower sure as hell stayed intact, despite a fire ten times the size of 911. And don’t forget Building 7, the Pentagram and the let’s roll crash all have as big if not bigger anomalies according to physical laws as the towers do.

        Just because you don’t know how to demolish it like we all saw doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t rc. There are two method possibilities I have that fit neither of which involve floor by floor explosive demolition, but I’m not discussing them here because these days discussing 911 details with anyone is to me about is interesting as watching paint dry, and as soon as someone raises a facet, people who understand nothing about it except the propaganda fake news has delivered to them jump on and pretend they’re suddenly structural engineers. And it just bores the crap out of me responding to their profound ignorance and unwilling attitude to consider anything but the propaganda line they have been fed and have obediently absorbed into their psyche.
        
        One interesting photo you should look for is the one where the granite bedrock has been melted and there’s a photo of it looking all swirly like it had been molten then solidified. That’s one clue to one of the possible methods if you’re interested in following it up.
        
        I take this non-discussion attitude simply because all the material is on the web and all you need is an open mind so people can do the work themselves if they care to and if they don’t care to, I can’t be arsed teaching them how to be smart and wise.
        
        If no-one was listening to us I’d just tell you straight and I know we’d have a fruitful and interesting discussion, but right here and now, I know we’d get the braying idiot brigade jumping out in full force and nothing fruitful would transpire, and I’m not giving my email address to the world.         Symetrical collapse of a structure like that does not happen unless it was designed to happen, simple as that mate.
        
        Not to mention, as I said, only 10% of the structure turned into rubble, 90% turned into not just dust but talcum powder. There was not enough potential energy in the Towers to accomplish even a fraction of that degree of pulverisation, and if you look carefully at some of the videos, you actually see massive pieces of steel turning into dust, in mid air. Also gravity acts vertically not horizontally, therefore the significant horizontal tragectories we all observed of objects some weighing hundred of tons, is impossible under a pure gravity driven collapse model.
        
        Simple physics. Can’t argue with it. You can deny or ignore it, but you can’t get around those above facts, unless you do one of those two things.

        The Madrid Windsor Tower is in fact entirely different to the WTC Towers in question .
        
        At 32 stories it was much smaller .
        
        Unlike the WTC it had a core of concrete and not just a steel frame .A key design difference that kept the Madrid Tower standing .
        
        Obviously unlike WTC 1 & 2 an aircraft did not crash into the Madrid Tower .
        
        Thus all it shows is that Steel columns will collapse in a fire and that concrete is fire resistant

After running an immigration article entitled “Immigrants are now cancelling their food stamps for fear that Trump will deport them,” someone at the Post decided it just wasn’t impactful enough. That illegal immigrants were cancelling food stamp benefits seemed to suggest the Trump administration was acting in the interest of overworked and underpaid American taxpayers.

And we definitely don’t want to give anyone the idea that undocumented immigrants entering the country illegally are somehow putting a burden on the system. Thus, the only solution is to flip-flop the story so that it looks like President Trump and Americans who support common-sense immigration policies are putting a horrific burden on the people collecting government benefits illegally.

In response to this disastrous mistake to their own narrative, the Washington Post modified their title to ensure all of the blame was put directly at the feet of Donald Trump:

“Immigrants are going hungry so Trump won’t deport them”

Made the mistake of trying to watch the news. Fake news anti Trump propaganda.

Last week I was listening to radio communism (yeah I know) and every single thing; book reviews, music, art… included anti Trump pieces.

We are too tolerant. These people are more of a threat to our way of life than Muslim terrorists and look what we do to them !. Severe and urgent measures need to be taken to protect us and our way of life.

  OTOH there’s also the WWII story told by his son of the Chief of the Boat in the US Navy submarine service who in his role of manning the machine gun was ordered to slaughter Japanese families in fishing boats off the coast of Japan and after doing it for awhile he abandoned his post and went below, and the Captain took out a gun and was going to go below to shoot him until some of the other people in the con talked him down.
  
  War is hell Jack.

  Look what happened in a completely different conflict: Vietnam.
  
  Look what they did to the convoys evacuating Kuwait in the early 1990’s.
