  There are some intriguing contradictions in the extent to which the KB consensus reflects the National establishment.
  
  For example, Willem of Okkam gets massacred with downticks every day, and no-one sticks up for him except other CAGW trolls, yet the National establishment has no principles or spine at all on the CAGW fraud.

    The KB consensus on climate change is no such thing and it is not only in contradiction to the “National establishment”, it is in contradiction to the view of the majority of the world’s climate scientists and governments.
    
    Does this so-called consensus really think that it has realised something which thousands of highly educated and experienced scientists, who have spent their lives researching the issue, have been too stupid to notice?
    
    Or is it that this and most other governments are not only able but willing to divert money – money that could have been used for spending which could actually win votes – in order to bribe or otherwise corrupt those thousands of scientists to say something that they don’t really believe?
    
    How is the government supposed to be managing it? People like Jane Kelsey, Mike Joy and Doug Sellman demonstrate with tedious regularity that it is perfectly possible, at least in New Zealand, to remain in academic employment and get Government grants despite loudly, publicly and often rudely challenging Government statements and policies.
    
    And why is the government doing it? Why would they go to so much trouble to fabricate reasons for diverting money away from spending which actually wins votes – tax cuts, health spending, better schools – and onto things which both the government and the scientists know to be not only politically unpopular but also economically damaging and completely unnecessary?

    Also Chlorine, and I believe Phosgene. Mustard was the preferred weapon because of its persistence and because it injured so many as well and hence burdened the enemy with casualties needing extensive care.
    
    Italians used chemical weapons in their campaign in Abyssinia in 1935, one of the reasons Britain in particular objected and petitioned the League of Nations for sanctions. However the League wouldn’t do anything and that was effectively the end of it.
    
    Both sides in WW2 had chemical weapons but luckily both decided on a “no first use” policy. It was in late WW2 that the Germans first developed the nerve gases like Sarin.
    
    The only other significant use of a “Chemical” weapon is the use of Phosphorus. It is still legitimate to use it as a smoke generator (at which it is unparalleled) but not as a primary chemical weapon using its pyrophoric properties against people. There’s some dispute over the use by Israel of Phosphorus but as far as we can tell despite the agit-prop that they use it legitimately for smoke generation only.

      Actually I’ll add two other points. Some people allege that the German’s used poison gas against the soviets in the Kerch Peninsular (Crimea), in particular against hold-outs in a set of catacombs in quarries; but the evidence is thin. German documents record a proposal to use non-poison irritant gas to flush people out, but that was not accepted. Second some claim that gas was used in teh Warsaw uprising; again not established and if it was, again an irritant (tear-gas) not poison.
      
      Small amounts of tear gas were apparently included in anti-tank rifle bullets, but this wasn’t discovered until after the war because it was so ineffective.
      
      However Spicer is actually correct that even Hitler didn’t use poison gas as a weapon of war. He did of course use it extensively in genocide. Those gases used (both Cyanide and CO were used) are not normally considered usable as war weapons, unlike Sarin.
      
      One can distinguish such cases, whether it is useful to do so, .
      
      Note that the Japanese did use gas in China on numerous occasions, and also used biological weapons including anthrax.

    I’m on the fence on this so far. Trouble is, what we have are players in the region, who are capable of anything. Big powers like the USA are vulnerable to being “played” by deeply cunning evil people. It is too convenient to ISIS, to have Assad’s military getting whacked, and ISIS is certainly capable of killing innocent people while “making it look like someone else did it”.
    
    But there could be such a thing as proof that Assad was responsible. Understandably, if there are intelligence sources that provide such proof, their cover should not be blown by making such proof public.
    
    Dealing with the Middle East and Muslim Arabs is like the ultimate thankless Sisyphean task.

    Padriv, you’re correct about improper handling of casualties, and there are reports of significant secondary contamination of medical and rescue staff who perhaps first believed that chemical weapons would not be used.
    
    Very recent NSA briefing claims that Sarin is confirmed from samples gathered from the dead.
    
    The claim that it was caused by bombing a rebel held stockpile though does not hold water. These agents are stored as binary components only, the raw agents decay and are corrosive. A secondary explosion would cause very limited and incomplete mixing generating relatively little nerve agent and only in the area of the explosion. The victims showed zero signs of fragmentation or explosion injuries so cannot have been close enough for that to have happened.
    
    Easy to try to fake these, but on the balance of probabilities I’d come down on the side of a Syrian chemical attack myself, though I’m open to new evidence. Quite possibly a deliberate challenge to Trump, and one he “passed” by not doing an Obama and ignoring it.

        Why would Assad use Chemical Weapons to start with for the same reasons ? My guess would be that it’s a variation on “Shock and Awe”, frighten people enough to reduce resistance. Worked for his father if you read up on the earlier Aleppo massacre.
        
        Yes it could be a false flag, but I suggest that would be hard to do. As far as we know (limited information I agree) the various rebel groups to not have access to Sarin, just Mustard Gas. There was an apparent attack by Syrian airforce at the time, I think that is admitted though claimed to be only using conventional weapons.
        
        Ignoring all of the more fantastic conspiracy theories (like: it was a real chemical attack arranged by Trump with Putin so it would take attention off internal US politics) the most likely scenario appears to have been a one-off Syrian attack – possibly even without central approval, as a test of the US resolve. If Obama had been still in charge they’d get away with it too. Next most likely, deliberate false flag by one or other rebel grouping, but access to Sarin is problematic. Third, no chemical attack at all, just misdirection on all sides.

        When the UN investigated the 2013 gas attacks it turned out that it was the rebels not the Government that were responsible
        
        The trouble is Obama’s famous red line was a signal to the “rebels ” to pull off a gas attack and even worse Obama doing nothing over the “red line” has become a domestic political football in the USA

      I think most people understand that the United States cannot just withdraw into itself and leave the rest of the world to carry on as it may. The United States is leader of the free world and need to show leadership. They did under Trump with the bombing of the Syrian airfield.
      
      Regarding the intelligence, Trump as President of the United States has access to intelligence reports and analysis that we don’t have. I think it is pretty safe to say that Assad bombed his own people with chemical weapons.
      
      Sometimes things are as they seem on the surface. Not everything is a conspiracy.

  secondly; in a later clarification in response to a question Spicer said that ‘Hitler did not drop (bombs) on homes’ but acknowledged that ‘gas was use in ‘holocaust centres” . Clumsy but clear.

  Two questions immediately come to mind:
  1) What proportion of this lady’s genome was tested?
  2) Did the test only concern DNA from her mother’s side of the family or from her father’s?

    1. According to most articles I can see on Ancestry autosomal DNA testing, they look at about 700,000 SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).
    
    That’s about 7% of a human’s SNP load (we have about 10million SNPs).
    
    We have about 3 billion nucleotides in our autosomal DNA ( excludes the sex chromosomes)…so
    all up, about 0.023% of the Lady’s DNA was tested.
    
    2. The DNA testing covers both the mother’s & father’s contribution to her DNA.
    But the tests cannot differentiate which SNPs come from Ma or Pa.

  First off, it was about 98% or so, the 2% they ascribe to “noise”.
  
  You need a base line to work from. ie. you need some full-blooded Maoris to use as a reference. Since no such people exist they really struggle to make a baseline.
  
  But this is just entertainment, not science, so just make shit up!

  The normal use of DNA testing is to confirm that the scene DNA sample is the same as the accused’s DNA sample. Ancestry DNA comparison could be used to try and locate a suspect but once a suspect is found the suspect’s DNA would be compared with the scene DNA. If the ‘example’ in the article is applied in a criminal setting, the ‘suspect’ would not be identified as there would be no match between the ancestor’s DNA and the scene DNA – ie the process would ‘fail safe’.

    You are quite right – they are like chalk and cheese. However ancestry DNA testing is not what is actually used for evidential testing. If ancestry DNA testing was produced as ‘proof’ in a trial the defence lawyer would be right into it.
    Even though ancestry testing is ‘unreliable’ it can still has a role in solving a crime. If a possible ancestor of the person who committed the crime is identified by DNA testing this indicates a class of persons one of whom may have committed the crime and hence would be a suspect. Police would check them and would eliminate most quite quickly. If one is left, Police would need more evidence before arresting such a suspect or even asking the suspect to provide a DNA sample.
    So there is no issue of someone being convicted on dud ancestry DNA testing.
    Would you want to see a rapist or murderer remain free because ancestry DNA testing is completely outlawed because it is ‘unreliable’?

        My limited understanding of genetics is genes (as defined by the makeup of the DNA strings) from both parents are ‘combined’ when the sperm fertilises the egg so the resulting genes are a juxtaposition of the genes of both parents. There are ‘dominant’ genes which show up in the person in question (eg red hair) and ‘recessive’ genes which does not define the makeup of the person but are capable of further transmission so a person with a red haired grandparent and black haired parent could well have red hair. Ancestry genetic testing would consist of looking for sufficient similarities between genes of two people to determine whether they are likely to be genetically related. Limitations would be an imperfect understanding of the genetic code and practical limits on testing and related data processing needs – hence the method is not completely reliable. There may be a company called ‘Ancestry’ who undertakes such testing. One example of ancestry testing was a woman born in Pakistan wanting to claim UK patriality as her mother was born in UK. As Pakistan does not include the mother’s name on its birth certificates, she had no evidence for her claim but an ancestry DNA test provided sufficient evidence to accept patrality meaning granting her UK citizenship. Note however that UK requirements have since changed.

        The National Geographic Genome study also tests for SNPs (Single Nucleotide polymorphisms), but not only on the autosomal chromosomes… also on sex chromosomes and on mitochondrial DNA.
        
        Each group presumably runs their own algorithms to make sense of the relationships between a subject’s DNA and the data they hold in their own data-base.

Next time All Blacks play at Westpac Stadium in Wellington,will the Rugby Player called Williams ,decide to boycott the team,and the game if the name of the well known bank, Westpac Stadium ,has not been removed. Hope he does,if that happens,and gets dumped. That would be a small victory for NZs, who have had a gutsful of not buckling to a form of “insidious blackmail”,as the real game plan ,in the long run, is Sharia Law for NZs.

Have just read locally that about one third of the flooded people in Edgecombe are uninsured.
Would have expected to see more; you don’t have to insure as the Taxpayers will stump up.

I assume that Uncle bill will use your cheque book, as is still being done in Christchurch, and will be in Kaikoura, to give your money away.

I don’t not know how many State houses there are in the Edgecombe area but I expect there will be a large number, so these people will have to be house elsewhere in a hurry, before Winter.

      There’s actually a lot of housing in areas “protected” by stop-banks. for example more than a few in Hawke’s Bay in Hastings and the surrounding suburbs, plus Waipukurau, Clive.     Broken families and the rest of the extended family not financial enough at the time to take on the support.
    Yes if there was no DBP, then we would have all stepped up and done what we could, but having that back stop was all that stood between losing everything and surviving long enough to get heads above water and start again.

      Because there is a bit of a progression here. Trump is a joke candidate, Trump will never win a primary, Trump will never raise enough money, Trump has no ground game, Trump will never be president et cetera et cetera et cetera
      
      so having been wrong about Trump for 2 years the same mainstream media now are still experts that can confidently predict that Trump will break his major election promise which was to build a wall.

“Flying the Unfriendly Skies”.
Since Air NZ is in the same airline alliance as United Airlines, perhaps Air NZ should take particular note of the United incident especially as Air NZ and United code share some flights. The whole matter of overbooking and ‘no refunds’ policy needs to be looked at. If I buy an airline seat on a ‘no refund’ basis, I expect the seat to be available (except for circumstances outside the airline’s control). I do not expect them to sell a few percent of the seat to someone else as well then conduct a lottery when the ‘few percent’ turns up and compete for the seat. If I cannot fly for any reason, the seat should either remain empty, or if resold I should get a refund. If anyone is going to be bumped, they need to offer enough goodies even if it seems utterly punitive – one or other passenger will yield if the price is right.
In United’s case the answer was simple – if four crew had to be ‘positioned’ at short notice, then United should have chartered an executive jet – there are enough around in USA (and most are available for hire when not needed by the owner).
A comparison could be drawn between Bob Jone’s case and the United case. In the former there was a safety issue at stake – an exit row passenger has the seat on the basis that the passenger will get the door open in an emergency and obviously the exit row passengers need to be briefed on how to get the door open if required. In the United case the passenger was forcibly removed (and seemed to have suffered minor injuries) for what were effectively commercial reasons and now has hero status vis a vis the evil airline.

  ps the guy in question is a doctor and had patients to see the next day. Society is very respectful of doctors and tries to accommodate them where possible so they can tend the sick. As soon as he announced he was a doctor and had patients to see the next day United staff should have laid off him. United would expect him to help tend to any medical emergency on flights which is even more reason doctors on flights should be properly ‘looked after’. What seems worse was United was trying to get four contiguous seats for its crew being ‘positioned’ which was quite unnecessary.

    I am aware of a Doctor having to drive past an serious road accident because she was not licensed to practice in that state.

      As a general case anyone can use his or her skills to render assistance to ill or injured persons and it is extremely unlikely that a medical registration authority would take an out of jurisdiction doctor to court for rendering emergency assistance. The doctor was probably concerned that she could face a hefty lawsuit if she helped the person and the person decided to sue because the treatment was negligent etc etc. There is generally no legal requirement in a ‘common law’ (eg UK, USA, NZ etc) country for a bystander to help a sick or injured person – there is no legal consequences for a person to pass on the other side. Fortunately in NZ while a bystander who helped a sick or injured person could theoretically be sued for negligence, such a lawsuit succeeding would be so unlikely that anyone rendering assistance (eg doing CPR) need not have any worries.
      There is an obligation to assist in some circumstances eg parent and child, sick or disabled person and caregiver, prison officer and prisoner, teacher and pupil and similar cases.

  Original reports said the crew was needed the next day. It’s a four hour drive from Chicago to Louisville and United had later flights to there as well. They had options for their personnel. I confess to flying United domestically frequently and the odds of a bad experience are far greater than a good one. This event comes as no real surprise to me.

    One such experience was hilarious! My inlaws and I wanted to fly from Boise to Maui Island (OGG). Inlaws got a United booking with two hops via SFO. I asked travel agent for same flights as part of round trip from NZ and computer said ‘no’. I had to go via SFO and Honolulu (United and Hawaii Airlines) on earlier flights. My flights went like clockwork. Inlaws’ flight was a flight from hell with delays and then a screaming baby. I think I was lucky being refused that other booking. I managed to wrangle the condo key (which the inlaws had booked) out of the manager and had food in the fridge for when they finally arrived.

    I have had the misfortune to fly United a fair bit over the years. They are right up there with Air Koro and Air Zimbabwe in terms of customer service. My last flight with them was LA to Baltimore and without a word of a lie the hostess was so fat she couldn’t properly walk down the aisle. In addition when I asked her for a drink while she was doing the meal you would have thought I had asked to fuck her mother. I have never flown them since and never will again if I can help it.

He must have spent tens of thousands on a lawyer defending a charge of sexually abusing a foster child. On the day of the trial the young woman decided she would not testify. The jury was dismissed and the man told he could go home.

His ex wife then paid someone to do a letter drop saying he was a peadophile. There was nothing he could do. Defamation is just for the super rich.

If Catriona MacLennan had her way he would have been found guilty.

  I have a friend who went through a similar ordeal Chuck; not once, but twice.
  
  Around 10 years ago, his vindictive ex-wife made allegations to the police that he had sexually abused one of their children, even after they had separated many years before. He was subject to a police investigation, but not charged.
  
  Several years later she went back to the police with more allegations, and this time my friend was arrested and charged with offences that could have seen him serve a long lag if convicted. He was by then in his 70’s, and not in the best of health, and as you can imagine, this was a huge upheaval.
  
  Fortunately, he is a meticulous record-keeper, and had documentary evidence which disproved many of the allegations she made by showing that he wasn’t even in the places where the offences were alleged to have occurred. However this woman managed to convince the police to proceed, and my friend’s ordeal was only ended when a judge threw out the allegations before they went to trial and discharged him. The judge made some very pointed and critical comments towards the ex-wife and the police, but these are covered by a suppression order.
  
  My friend spent many thousands of dollars to clear his name, and his health suffered markedly, all because of a spiteful and vindictive woman who could not accept that he had moved on with his life. Sadly, I suspect his experience is not unique.

Modelling to shown by Deloitte Access Economics partner Chris Richardson at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday shows a China crisis would wipe almost $140 billion from Australia’s economy, send unemployment up, cut house prices by 9 per cent, and destroy almost $1 trillion of national wealth.

The modelling, which underscores the degree to which Australia’s exposure to what happens in China is greater than at any time in the last two-thirds of a century, will also show that the federal budget would blow out by another $40 billion in over just two years.

  NZ Company taxes are fully imputed in any dividends (to the extent that the company has paid tax). So the recapture is not perhaps happening that way.
  
  And although other countries including the USA tax at higher rates, most have much more significant tax-breaks (like in the US deductions for mortgage interest) and come in at much higher levels of income.

Re Syrian gas attack.
Doctors said victims showed symptoms consistent with the use of a nerve agent such as sarin — suspected to have been used by government forces in the 2013 attacks.
Note the word consistent.
US officials have not said what kind of agent they think was used, but Trump said it was ‘a chemical gas that is so lethal, people were shocked to hear what gas it was.’
Note that US officials have not named the gas.
Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Thursday he was ‘100 per cent sure’ Assad ordered the suspected chemical attack.
Lieberman said the alleged attack in the neighbouring country was carried out ‘on the direct and premeditated command of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with Syrian planes’.
‘I say this with 100 per cent certainty,’ Lieberman told the Yediot Aharonot daily.
Would Lieberman say he was 100% certain if he wasn’t?

  Sarin is colourless and odourless. But eyewitnesses reported a yellow mushroom cloud as well as a chlorine smell. So I’m picking that there were at least two chemicals – probably sarin and either chlorine or sulphur mustard. The latter as it has been used by the terrorists (including so called “rebels”).
  
  Since sarin is by far the most lethal, the only purpose of the other chemical is to make sure that observers can see it from a distance. There’s more to this story than is being told.
  
  My best guess is that the Syrian Govt was set up (perhaps even by the CIA) by being told of the location of a “munitions factory” that actually had the chemical weapons stored in it.

    Sarin is typically used in binary weapons – two different compounds are mixed together at the impact site to make the sarin that then disperses. There are a number of different ways of doing this and they all produce other chemicals, beside the sarin, which is probably what people smelled.

Labour leader Andrew Little could be heading back to court after Lani Hagaman said she believes every effort should be made to bring her husband’s claims of defamation to completion.

However, contrary to the finding of the court on qualified privilege, my legal advice continues to be that Mr Little was not entitled to protection by that. As this matter remains unresolved, I believe it requires clarification,” she said. “While Earl is still alive I believe that it is important that every effort is made to bring his claims to completion, and I intend to do so.”

Now might be a good time for Andrew Little to offer another apology (properly worded this time and not issued through the media) and a more attractive settlement offer…

    Andrew Little (in conjunction with his lawyers) will need to assess how the law on the qualified privilege defence applies in this context. As things currently stand, he’s been found to have made at least one defamatory statement, so the issue now turns to whether his reliance on the qualified privilege defence is watertight. I don’t think it’s watertight – but the legal position doesn’t seem to be settled. And, as you’ll see from the Colin Craig-Jordan Williams matter, there’s always scope for a judge to revisit aspects of a case that were decided by a jury.
    
    So, overall, there’s a bit more water to flow under this bridge.

    I also read McNeish’s book. The part that got me was that Costello was a private in the NZ forces in Greece and Crete 1941. As an academic who had studied Greek and could therefore speak the local lingo he was kept a private. It is stories like that that make me think of that old oxymoron, “military intelligence”.
    He does not even rate a mention in McClymont’s Official History of NZ in WW2, “To Greece”. But he was promoted in the western desert, after being evacuated from Greece.
