For those that think the climate models predicting doom and disaster are the reason we have to act now, howabout NIWA’s predictions for April put out in March:

Of course, their prediction a month later said exactly the opposite. Now why have they any credibility about 80 years into the future when they can’t get the next month right?

    As well as confusing weather with climate, this misunderstands the nature of forecasting and statistical trends. Long term trends are more reliably predictable than short term events.
    
    Consider. Would you rather bet that one coin toss will turn up heads, or that roughly half of 10,000 tosses will result heads?

      No Albert – Long term models aren’t necessarily more reliable than short term ones – the NIWA is 3 months so not short term like weather which generally descends to chaos in about 8 days.
      The models are totally dependent on their assumptions, on starting conditions and the influencing parameters. Get those wrong and it is GIGO. Even hindcasting isn’t a guarantee of success.
      For example in climate, the El Nino/ La Nina oscillations have the biggest influence on the trends. The models cannot predict either their likelihood or their occurence. They can’t even do clouds, nor can they determine if clouds are positive or negative feedback. If they can’t get those relatively simple issues (modelling the effect of thunderstorms in GCMs is beyond current computing power), everything else is shit.

      No Albert. Climate is usually taken as the average over a 30 year period. El Ninos typically are about 18 months. There is an average of two big El Ninos over a thirty year period. If this varies between say one and three, then that is 10% of the time. That is enough to have a big difference in the climate statistics.
      And if the NIWA predictions aren’t climate, why do they specifically call them that – look at the link titles.

    So what you are saying, is free market capitalism that brings more and more products of better and better value for money, within the reach of more and more people, is just a waste of time, the morally and rationally correct thing to do is run rackets that perpetuate and worsen wealth transfers to “rent seekers”, penalise “producers”, and increase the divide between the “haves” and “have nots”?
    
    While this might sound like lefty talk, consider that Lenin said “a capitalist would sell you the rope you use to hang him” and Ayn Rand said “those kinds of capitalists need to be hung BEFORE they sell the communists the rope”.
    
    “Capitalists” of the kind who are responsible for the rigging of housing markets by useful-idiot urban planners, and their cheerleaders and problem-deniers, are certainly not of any use in the long political battle against creeping statist socialism. Guess what? In the still-affordable States of the USA, they are not talking about large construction programs of “public” housing with taxpayers money as a “solution” because they truly DON’T have a problem (and they are not talking about public transport as the main infrastructure solution either). They are light years ahead of us in “enlightenment” political instincts.

      I can’t say I really understand where you’re trying to go with that.
      
      What I am saying is that welfare is supposed to be a “safety net” that keeps you from ending up in the gutter. It is not supposed to be a comfortable hammock that is a career choice. Someone in the position of getting a state house should be thankful they’re not standing in the rain. Instead they bitch and moan that it’s not good enough.
      
      Sure we should provide shelter, but providing a level of shelter better than 90% of what the rest of the world gets is good enough.
      
      What average middle class families lived in in the 1950s should also be good enough.
      
      “Shitty” housing in NZ is all down to attitude – not reality. What we call unfit housing is considered more than fit for most people. Are Kiwis really so fragile that they need extra cotton wool?
      
      I’ve lived for months in places with no running water (had to fetch water in buckets from the stream 200m away). No phone, no electricity. In NZ my family and I lived in tents for 3 months while waiting to buy a house. Not a problem it you’ve got the right attitude.
      
      Regulations do hinder things and drive up costs. For example you can’t build single-glazed houses any more (and they really are not that bad – I’ve never lived in anything else). Zoning restrictions are bad too.

        We are not a third world country, and have greater aspirations for our people. Dates back to RJ Seddon and the Liberals, and then state housing introduced by the first Labour government, subsequently embraced by governments of both the right and left. But if you want to live in a country with different policies and goals, South Africa awaits your return.
        
        Usually I wouldn’t be so blunt, but as you are often critical of the alleged inability of Muslim immigrants to “fit in”, I thought you may value a “heads up” on what counts as core Kiwi values.

        Sure we are not a third world country. And we can aspire to having everyone living very comfortably in flash houses. And (relative to the rest of the world) they do, so we can say that box is ticked.
        
        We can even want more for people, but the question becomes this: how do they get more?
        
        Just giving people more does not work. That is highly destructive and makes people entitled. That is a Bad Thing for everyone: the people being burdened with extra tax etc as well as the people who have their work ethic etc wiped out by multi-generational welfare.
        
        Or, maybe, we could borrow…. but that’s just nasty to the unborn generations that don’t have a say in the matter.
        
        As for real Kiwi values? Maybe they had a better idea about that back in the 50s and 60s when people didn’t just grab any handout they could. People were thankful for being able to afford a simple house with single glazing.

  The problem with that, is that the way housing “supply” is distorted (actually the land market), you can guarantee that ANYTHING on the demand side will just push prices up some more.
  
  If you do have a properly adjusted market where the prices don’t get pushed up by every demand input (income increases, immigration, interest rate cuts, subsidies, tax breaks etc) then you have a median multiple consistently around 3 to 4 and no volatility. Once you have a median multiple that has been over 6 for a decade and is now over 10, it is misguided to talk about “incomes needing to be increased to compensate”. It ain’t gonna work that way.

    Economic theory may ignore humans. If the money supply is increased prices must increase proportionally or else inequalities arise in the relative values between the parties in the trading of goods and services. That unfairness is quickly perceived and prices moved to adjust to the extra money available to pay for them.
    
    For housing the price drivers are demand and money supply. Once immigration was considered to be a GDP driver. Cheap money from the FED and others have pushed global asset prices as it gets wholesaled through global banking networks. Add to that increasing expectations as to what is an acceptable basic dwelling and prices will rise.

      It is so depressing, what you say is absolutely right, I have plenty of this experience too. Every bleedin’-heart social justice organisation wants high density State housing and apartment blocks as “the solution”, always with “more public transport provision”, and even tighter urban planning to “save the planet even more”.

        The problem is that few people want to live in apartments when they can choose to live in a house.
        
        This is what market demand tells us.
        
        Apartments are fine if you’re retired or young w/o kids AND enjoy dense urban living, but that demographic is a small subset of the NZ housing market. Part of the New Zealand mindset is love of the outdoors and personal space, else what’s the point of living here?
        
        Many of these greenists who advocate apartments don’t live in apartments, themselves. So, given that demand, the answer is “much more land development”, or have high land prices.

Did anyone see the last “I am Innocent”? It was about a woman with a brutal partner. When her 7 month old baby died she took the rap for him. She did not do jail time but that affected her of course. About 10 years later he found God and plead guilty to the killing of their baby and was sentenced to 3 years jail. She has been totally separated from him for years.

She has tried to get he conviction wiped without success. There no indication they both abused the baby. What is wrong with our so called justice system?

        Yes I think that case was rubbish. If a person confesses to a crime they should take whatever punishment they get. Like, if they deliberately step out in front of a train, they can’t complain if they get squashed. Also, falsely confessing to a crime is perverting the course of justice, as VicParking pointed out below.

How can a man that is a absolute failure can keep saying “Bill English is indecisive and a weak Leader ” when you have just seen him implement the biggest Pay rise in NZ history and give Labour no air for criticism of it and work with the Union to how it will be implemented has again left Labour to return to their whining an whinging on Housing and Immigration.

  They had a chat with Michael Bassett about his new book and included a little clip of David Lange when the reporter asked him for a “short word”. Without looking at the reporter, hesitating for a second or even breaking stride Lange came out with a short word.
  “Wombat”.

So the we have a right to be offended parade is out again today.

The backpackers’ vehicle rental company Wicked Campers is making a mockery of attempts to curb the use of offensive slogans on its vans. It has ignored repeated rulings against it by the Advertising Standards Authority, showing contempt not just for the complainants, but for the rest of us too.

  I tend to agree. I find their slogans juvenile and distasteful, but clearly there is a market for such vans – otherwise no one would hire them.
  The idea that someone travelling here would want to hire a campervan adorned with slogans that offend many locals seems remarkable though.

        I don’t think the disabled should be targets for mocking or ridicule; I would be quite offended were someone to mock my severely disabled eldest child and have a very negative impression of anyone who did.
        
        BUT I also think it is better to challenge offensive speech when delivered rather than suppress its delivery completely because once we start down the track of exempting groups of people from ridicule and attaching legal penalties to such ridicule, these exemptions are continually extended to the point that reasoned criticism and open discussion become impossible as groups use claims of offence and hate speech to suppress alternative opinions and criticism of their own beliefs and behaviour.

  The slogans are a form of guerrilla marketing, designed to achieve maximum exposure for minimal cost. Every piece of controversy, every case brought with the ASA, and even this editorial, perversely gives them more publicity and helps them achieve their ends.
  
  I wonder whether the Advertising Standards Authority and the perpetually offended realise they are being played for all they are worth? If not, more fool them.

        Let get one thing right did I ever mention that I was dyslexic and have you read what I have actually said. Some people are able to be quite clever in several other subjects and that help them achieve some of their goals. My ability in English borders on laziness if you like to put that way and my main teachers in that subject thought that way to but I do assure you I actually try not to make mistakes and don’t really like being criticized for doing so, Maths was my subject and got me good jobs all round NZ with office staff to help fix my illiteracy in English. Call it what you like but it really comes back to me being a fuckwit at English something that pisses me off being continually reminded of.

  Not so sure if it is the fans, or more the nationalistic press in various parts of the four home countries. Warburton is a good choice as skipper and lead them successfully in Australia in 2013.
  
  But managing, coaching and captaining a Lions tour is the most difficult assignment in rugby, if not in sport. You have to create a team from scratch every three or four years, meld together people who, in the ordinary course of events have fierce international and historical rivalries, disappoint some supporters by omitting their local favourites, and keep a cohesive unit with no home games in some of the most difficult nations in which to win – well, New Zealand and South Africa, anyway. Plus the Lions lost the one and only fixture they have played (1977) in Fiji!
  
  Is no wonder that mutinies and/or unsuccessful capacity to adapt and work together affects Lions tours more than any other – Welsh players in both the 1950 and 1959 Lions intrigued against their Irish skippers, the captains of the 1966, 1977 and 1983 Lions, Michael Campbell-Lamerton, Phil Bennett and Cairan Fitzgerald were all noble and gallant but tragic failures who couldn’t cope in one way or another with the competitive pressures both on and off the field. And it was only the guts of the Paddies and Taffies who kept the “Clive Woodward show” on the road in 2005 once Lawrence Dallaglio and Brian O’Driscoll were invalided out. I remember Woodward foolishly subbing his gutsy stand-in Welsh skipper, Gareth Thomas during the last test in 2005. Amazing the Welsh supporters didn’t string Woodward up on the spot, it was such as senseless and insulting act to a guy who had given his guts.
  
  On a brighter note, the 1971 Lions leadership of manager Doug Smith (Scotland), coach Carwyn James (Wales) and captain John Dawes (Wales) were about the best of all time in the amateur era, although the senior pros on that tour – Ray McLoughlin, Willie John McBride, Mike Gibson helped. But Dawes was a massive failure as coach in 1977. And the 1993 combo of manager Geoff Cooke, (England) coach Ian McGeechan (Scotland), assistant coach Dick Best (England) and captain Gavin Hastings (Scotland) were very good and very unlucky. I’m still trying to figure out the reason for the award of that last minute penalty that Fox kicked to win the first test. Shades of Don Clarke’s six penalties to beat the magnificent Lions four tries in the first test at Carisbrook, Dunedin in 1959!

      Yep, although I think you meant 1993 (although a young pre-All Black Fox kicked a last minute drop goal to help Auckland beat the 1983 Lions early in their tour. They also went on to lose to Canterbury and the series 4-0, with a rout in the last test. The 1993 team had a good Saturday team, but their midweek dirt trackers under Will Carling fell apart as the tour went on and they lost to Hawkes Bay and Waikato. Also games lost to Otago and Auckland. But they should have won the first and kicked our arse in the second, and we cheated in the lineouts in the third, although we were very good on the day. Successful debut to Lee Stensness).
      
      Fox retired at the end of that domestic 1993 winter after playing Australia and Western Samoa. And the paucity of no. 10s before Andrew Mehrtens merged caused them to try the Marc Ellis experiment at first five eighth. Then, when he was injured Simon Mannix and Stephen Bachop (missed kick to touch = try from the end of the world) in the difficult winter of 1994.
      
      Yes, I am the same with 1977. First major tour that occurred when I was a kid – Grant Batty on one leg intercepting to win the first test then retiring, Colin Farrell (yikes!), Sid Going dropped for the third test, Bevan Wilson’s great debut, Ian Kirkpatrick scoring in the first minute of that test match, and then the Lawrie Knight try that won the match and series in the last few minutes of the last test against the run of play. The Lions that day lost the same way we did against France at Cardiff in 2007 , winning and controlling 80% of possession and they were behind on the scoreboard at fulltime – “how the hell did that happen?!”

I’m no economist, but I am trying to learn a bit about the relationship between CPI (price movements), and the amount currency in circulation.

In 1998 NZ had $1,133b in circulation, and by 2004 this had risen to $3,067b, a CAGR of 6.03%. Oddly, the RBNZ figures stop after 2004.

Over the same period our CPI averaged 2.9%.

Can any of our economics experts help me understand what this means, in terms of the impact on the ‘average’ NZer?

Well Andrew Little is trying to drum up up some headlines for himself and Labour over the wage increase for caregivers for the elderly saying that the Government were dragged in to the negotiations kicking and screaming. It looks like he is really pissed at the complements being paid to National by the Union, workers and the media that has sucked away any air that they thought Labour would achieve had the court case continued.

Currently in a caravan at Mangawhai Heads. Have my boat here as well. Went for a drive around Mangawhai and then Langs Beach and Waipu Cove. There is a lot going on, new houses being built everywhere – same as Waiheke Island when I was there last Jan.
Question, where is this poverty I keep hearing about? The Country is booming!
Of course there are those who won’t work and thing the Taxpayer owes them a living, but where is this poverty? and why are they in poverty? Too fucking lazy is my guess.

I can see a possible problem.

Person A is horny. Person A sends Person B a message while driving. Person A intends to say “Let’s meet at Westfield St Lukes”. Person A actually says “I can’t stop thinking about what you look like naked!” The message is sent without a pre-send check (Person A is driving after all). Person B receives the unintended message and all hell breaks loose!

The number of people receiving a benefit has continued to fall, with the proportion of the population on a main benefit – 9.6 per cent – the lowest it’s been in a March quarter since 1997.

At the end of the quarter there were 278,236 people on a main benefit, a decrease of 1655 (0.6 per cent) compared to last year.

More details emerge:

A Russian government think tank controlled by Vladimir Putin developed a plan to swing the 2016 U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump and undermine voters’ faith in the American electoral system, three current and four former U.S. officials told Reuters.

They described two confidential documents from the think tank as providing the framework and rationale for what U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded was an intensive effort by Russia to interfere with the Nov. 8 election. U.S. intelligence officials acquired the documents, which were prepared by the Moscow-based Russian Institute for Strategic Studies [en.riss.ru/], after the election.

For example: ever look up the reference to US military interventions I pointed you to? No? Or the actual facts surrounding the bombing of Cambodia and Laos? I thought not. Haven’t got the time.
As for the ‘tedious implication’ you refer to above – it has nothing to do with anything I posted, as you infer, that connection is only in your head. In which case you are either deranged, or dishonest or both. After reading your recent posts, it’s a close thing, but I think your dishonesty is beginning to pull ahead.
