I have been listening to Country Life on suicide this morning.

20 sheep shearers in one man’s recall. There is little we can do to help these people, but with 5 law schools in New Zealand we should take an interest in the tragic case of Mark Lundy.

He did not kill his family, it is not too late to resolve this issue. People who are acquainted with Queens counsels, and judges should draw their attention to this national disgrace.

      The acknowledged researcher even by the police is Chris Birt. Pat Booth did a fantastic job, but for some odd reason he arrived at the wrong solution, Jeanette shooting her husband after a fight, feeding the baby for a few days, and calling Len Demler just before shooting herself.
      This is completely wrong, Demler had access to the house and a gun Chris Birt identified. He shot Harvey in the back of the head as he sat, and since the gun took just one 22 bullet, beat his daughter savagely in the head, reloaded and shot her. She had uncovered that day the stark fact he had forged his wife’s will, which had in its original intent to leave the farm to Jeanette.
      
      I am glad you might understand the Lundy case. Thugs were sent to frighten Mark Lundy into settling a debt. He owed 500k to Mr permanently name suppressed. Mr permanently name suppressed in turn owed more than that sum around town. He used the paperwork for Lundy’s debt to promise others, and one of those others became extremely impatient. The New Zealand police know these facts. These facts were presented in court and totally ignored by two juries, but not by the judges in summing up. Your 24 people, dolts and fools.
      
      As so often, the two cases of double murder were about money, but the police are thick as pigshit both times.

        2. Leave two thugs to kill again after seeing how easy it is to surprise and fool the cops from out of town.
        3. Set the taxpayer up for the mother of all compensation payouts.

      In 40 years you will get the odd bent cop. But in the last 40yrs There has been how many police in service. How many villains have they put away. Harping back to the Thomas case very time
      you get a low life spin a good story to the gullible media. Is getting tedious.
      The reality is since Lundy was removed from the street. There has not been a similar crime

        Of course there hasn’t. It was a unique set of circumstances.
        Let us think this through.
        Mark Lundy was a successful kitchenware salesman and helped by his wife with the accounts, a commonplace story in small business. He was obviously played for a sucker into paying far too much for grape root cuttings to a charlatan, a charlatan deep in debt, and subsequently bankrupted. Bad people were both sides of this guy, for example was he also growing marijuana hybrids amongst the grape cuttings, and overpromising? This industry was emerging at this time. This guy ended deep in debt, and obviously to the wrong people, not Michael or Keeping Stock for example. The morning of the day the killings happened, there was an altercation.
        
        Here is testimony from 2002, far more relevant than the 2015 debacle.
        
        A friend of Lundy’s, whose name was suppressed, told the court that
        Lundy first told him about a 49-hectare (120-acre) Hawke’s Bay
        property in mid-1999, after hearing how a relative in Australia was
        running a syndicate business involving a 35,000-hectare property.
        
        The man said he was not involved in purchase of the land.
        
        “Mark . . . had a discussion with a viticulturist who informed him
        there was a three-year wait to obtain grafted grape plants suitable to
        go into the land . . . the consultant said to Mark he should grow his
        own rootstock . . . As we had land available, Mark asked if I would be
        interested in growing rootstock . . . so we were supplying plants.”
        
        The witness had not bought shares in the wine-growing venture himself,
        but he had bought about 113,000 root cuttings at a cost of $70,000,
        and was to sell them on to Lundy’s wine venture company at $4.10 plus
        gst a plant, for more than $500,000.
        
        In the meantime, Lundy had set up a company named Winegrowers to fund
        the venture, meeting initial costs of between $80,000 and $100,000.
        Shares in the company were to be sold to the public in $3500 blocks,
        each comprising 1000 $1 shares and a $2500 mortgage bond, creating a
        total capital, if all shares were sold, of $3.5 million.
        
        The land purchase was never completed, however, and the vendor was
        able to start charging Lundy penalty interest at $700 a day.
        
        “I was aware he was paying penalty interest sometime in June or July
        (2000), possibly earlier,” the witness said. “At the end of August
        2000 I believe the penalty interest had reached $90,000.”
        
        He said a meeting took place between himself and Lundy in early or mid
        August, with Lundy concerned that the shares were not selling.
        
        The witness said he recommended that Lundy should pull the plug on the
        venture and face the costs of $190,000.
        
        An agreement was reached for the witness to make inquiries about a
        potential overseas buyer till the end of August.
        
        The discussions yielded a response from a party interested in buying
        perhaps half the vineyard, and a planned meeting with a second
        interested party, he said.
        
        The witness said he had been involved in arranging insurance cover for
        the Lundys including a policy on their property, which had paid out
        $75,000 on Christine’s death. But a planned life insurance policy fell
        through when a medical check showed Lundy to have diabetes and
        Christine to be overweight.
        
        The witness said that on the day of the murders, he had been visited
        by an irate rootstock supplier demanding payment for his grape
        cuttings, but the payment was not due till the next month and the
        witness had called police to his property.
        
        Later that day, he left a message on Lundy’s cellphone sometime after
        7pm to tell him of the event, he said. When Lundy returned the call,
        about 8.30pm, he said he had not had dinner, and had only just
        remembered to ring. He sounded “quite normal”, the witness said.
        
        When he had spoken to Lundy the next day, however, Lundy had been
        “extremely distressed”.

        As G152 pounts out Arthur Thomas had two trials and 2 failed appeals. Len Demler killed his daughter when she was about to confront him for forging her mother’s will. The forgery is on display in Chris Birt’s book The Final Chapter. Teina Pora was found guilty in two trials and 2 failed appeals yet no New Zealander thinks him guilty. The Mark Lundy case is the same, police malfeasance is in play, and will be revealed to the public at a time of the choosing of those who have investigated thoroughly.

I find it appalling that you would allow the police to ignore the cleaving asunder of a woman and her child, and arrest and imprison a family man on a business trip to Petone.   Did they offer any opinion why sheep shearers appear to have such a high suicide rate? It is bloody hard work, but there is usually a healthy dose of camaraderie in those sort of gangs.

    In many ways I’m not too surprised.
    
    Sheep shearers are often loners with drifter lifestyles that do not fit in with the rest of society.
    
    That’s just the sort of personality that is prone to suicide.

      They didn’t say why.
      At the end they mentioned that financial reasons are not common reasons but relationship breakdowns and other issues are more common.

      To be in a shearing gang now days you are not a loner, but have worked your way up from rousy to the last stand shearer, and if you are good enough to the first stand. I have had a bit to do with shearing gangs. Having been in one helps me know a bit about them. For you to call them loners and drifters shows your upbringing as a kaffir hater from the old country.         I know two sheep shearers who were brothers who worked their butts off – aim was to buy a farm. They succeeded and farmed for many years. I know about it as one married my cousin. They are happily retired. The Aussie Workers Union hated NZ shearers – their attitude and work ethic ran rings around Aussie shearers.
        Partner’s nephew was a cow inseminator, in the NZ off season he did the same in UK. Earnings helped set him up in life.

        Not sure why you call me a kaffir hating racist, but that’s nothing to do with this. For the record I don’t hate blacks (or kaffirs as you seem to prefer calling them).
        
        I agree that shearers are often intensely loyal to each other when they fit together as a team. But if you don’t fit in they let you know about it. They really depend on eachother so it is very much fit in or fuck off.
        
        The point I was trying to make is that many shearers (more than the general population) only really fit into the shearing scene and really struggle to fit into the rest of society. Many like the shearing lifestyle because it is separate from normal society.
        
        NZ shearing isn’t as seasonal as it was, but seasonality causes problems because people go from intense close camaraderie to suddenly being on their own.
        
        That leaves some huge holes to their ability to cope with depression etc. and makes them more vulnerable to suicide.
        
        Exactly the same happens in the military too. Soldiers depend on each other and live in close proximity for a long time. When they demob they’re left on their own devices and military suicide rates are extremely high.
        
        The difference though is that soldiers get a lot of psychological support – shearers get none.
        
        Just remember we’re talking stats here and comparing to the general population. Most shearers don’t top themselves and nor do most soldiers.

    Is it okay to imprison an innocent man? Legal truth is dissociated from the facts in the case. Shame on you, wahine, for taking not a passing interest along with your fellow bloggers in the irrefutable scientific facts that led the privy council to the conclusion there was a miscarriage of justice.
    Lundy has been destroyed by your friends in parliament and the judiciary. They are without shame thus far, and we can expect them to fight paying compensation till the end of time.

        My understanding is he is in Rangipo prison and categorised as a prisoner in denial. That is the depravity the system stoops to, after stealing his liberty with much malice aforethought.
        He is a strong and reilient man as is often the case when a man is thumped by society and the state which is purported to represent its citizens with fairness.
        I don’t understand how you can all pretend this isn’t happening.
        I don’t understand down ticking triple checked facts that are available for everyone.
        The appeal court has a problem though. In order to please their political masters and deny a pending appeal they must write a succession of bare faced lies.

  The label “hard right” has more and more come to mean that the person thus being labelled, is a victim of a leftist-progressive campaign of hate and lies.
  
  One consequence of this is that the rare real “hard right” white supremacist can’t be distinguished by reason of the label applied to them. What does the Media Party do, when they ran out of “extremist” labels at the point on the political spectrum of Tony Abbott and George W. Bush?
  
  I guess the illusion they are trying to maintain is that Abbott and Bush, Trump and Bannon, Le Pen and Farage, David Duke and Hitler, are all the same essential stuff and degrees of labelling are superfluous.

  I have been assuming for years that Pauline Hanson really was what the media said she is, even though I saw through their labelling of people like Abbott, Bush, Brash, Farage and Trump. But last year Dick Smith endorsed Hanson, saying he was satisfied after a discussion with her, that she was not a racist at all. Funny enough, I find it easy to believe him and easy to believe that the MSM were just being smear-campaigning ratbags all along.

        I had the misfortune to hear most of the, um, ‘interview’ with Alan Gibbs.
        
        Quite apart from Hill’s voice, which has clearly been honed in a gravel pit, most of her questions were a poorly attempted drive-by shooting.
        
        He used the term “sold for a profit” several times and I though Ms Hill would explode by the third time.

    As a byproduct of a recent Australian based sea cruise I was reliant on Okker local news 24 hours (no internet). It was interesting then discussing Australian politics with other passengers. It appears Turnbull is generally regarded as a self seeking arsehole, not terribly interested in politics as much as himself. Hansen has definitely had an influence, especially with those voters who see the Aussie way of life (such as it is) being usurped by stand alone cultures. The new immigration rules are basically so full of holes as to be useless. Question: Do you beat your wife Mohammed?

Notice the Lie-bour Party are into the politics of misinformation. Earlier in the week was flap jaw Angry Andy Little ,or Mr 7% saying if elected he would cut immigration by tens of thousands,yet didnt know where, when, or how. Then is was the Oxfam refugee a guy called Twyford,who has never had a real job,who set out to bad mouth anyone with a Chinese name,who bought property,in Auckland,turned out of the Auckland sales only 3% of the buyers had Chinese sounding names. Now the trough sucker Twyford ,wants to attack anyone who buys a rental property or uses their house as collateral to start a business. Trough sucker Twyford claims the buyers are rich and using the tax system to get richer and wants all tax benefits eliminated. , . Once more a simple check with IRD, will prove Twyford rants are just that,and Lie-bour are practicing the politics of misinformation. Seems with liars like Twford, he is out to crucify the rental property market,and cause increased rents beyond the reach of many potential renters,that is if any property investors are silly enough to stay in the business as landlords.

The other day I met a couple of young backpackers who are in NZ on Working Holiday visas. They’ve done a variety of stints working on farms on and city projects and tell me that the incidence of drug-taking by Kiwis working alongside them is common.

I know I am naive but I cannot for the life of me understand those who call for a more relaxed attitude to ‘recreational’ drugs in NZ and would like us to follow in the direction of Canada and some of the individual states in the USA.

If drug taking during working hours is already a common phenomenon amongst a certain type of NZ worker, how is the greater availability and a more relaxed attitude to ‘recreational’ drug use going to improve worker safety and worker output in industry? Am I missing something here?

Maybe some of our KBlogger drug enthusiasts can give me an answer that will convince me.

  The point of decriminalising is two-fold:
  a) it eliminates criminal profits thus reducing general crime as well as drug “crime”
  b) it recognises the drop-dead no-brainer obvious-but-to-morons fact that drug prohibition doesn’t work, it never has and it never will, so why continue to beat yourself against the brick wall like an insane idiot by insisting an impossible policy should be continued.
  
  Fact is, anyone who wants drugs will and does find them. Anyone who thinks they can’t be found because the law is so effective, is deluding themselves.
  
  So given this, isn’t claiming that if drugs are decriminalised this will entail a huge upsurge in usage a bit like Norm Jones proclaiming during the Homosexual Law Reform debate in the early 80’s, that if it went through then suddenly everyone will want to start bumming each other and the nation will face a gay outbreak of Biblical proportions? Which is exactly what he said back then, and it didn’t happen, did it. Which is exactly what will happen if drugs are decriminalised, as well.

  Most of the people that hallucinate decriminalising will see a mass upsurge in usage (which is their main indeed only argument against), don’t have the faintest clue as to what they are talking about, like Jones with gays. Most of them appear to be profoundly ignorant of the dynamics of drugs, what they are, what they do to you, and how people behave when they’re on them. It’s as if they take their cues on this subject from something akin to the Reefer Madness bollocks propaganda film from the 50’s. If they did have the first clue then you’d be able to see it in the arguments they make, but they never do anything except demonstrate through their comments on the matter that they’re as profoundly ignorant as a 50’s parent just walking out of the Reefer Madness movie determined to stop this horrific curse from befalling their darling little Johnny and Jane.
  
  I’ve talked about this to various security professionals over the years and a fair number of them are of the same mind: they should be decriminalised because of the aforementioned reasons: prohibition doesn’t and more importantly, CANNOT work; and eliminating this massive income stream from criminals HAS to be a good idea.
  
  Incidentally, isn’t it sad now that in the US we are seeing drug “criminals” (users and small time dealers) being sentenced to 30-40 year terms which is more than murderers and rapists get, simply so the US private prison system can make profits. That’s just one example of the human detritus that can be created by this prohibition, if one lives in a corrupt country like the US. Because, duh, the private prisons donate to state politicians to make “appropriate” laws and donate to judges’ political campaigns to make “appropriate” sentences.
  
  Big business, drugs. Lots of vicious, murderous swine in the game, many wearing uniforms of various kinds.
  
  Eliminating prohibition would eliminate all of that, too. As a side-benefit.

    Well actually Norm Jones was right about homosexuality and there definitely is a slippery slope. Decriminalization of homosexuality opened the door for legalising prostitution which Tim Barnett used as a wedge to open the door to civil unions. Civil unions was only another step to gay marriage which is now leading to persecution of tradionally minded folk especially Christians.
    The overturning of morality continues with transgender rights and also a move to polygamy. The next steps are bestiality and lowering the age of consent.
    So Norm Jones was right.
    
    We need to resist the social justice warriors and return to better morals. In the meantime many suffer in mixed up families and broken relationships. It’s the kids who suffer most unfortunately.

        A few years ago they had a campaign with various cartoon characters including Manu, whose “identity remains largely unknown, but Manu made it known they prefer gender neutral pronouns”.

    There are hundreds of thousands of Kiwi’s that enjoy the odd smoke and as far as I am aware that is not decreasing as our population increases paired with “drug education programs”. I does appear young people seem less likely to partake but also don’t see MJ as a gateway, they just miss it out and go direct to P. A lot of people my age have done or do still enjoy the odd smoke. It makes sense to decriminalise this type of activity as the consequences of a minor possession conviction can destroy careers and restrict travel for no good reason. Remove the discretion option from police and instate either an instant fine or warning. It’s utterly ridiculous that possession of a relatively harmless drug (far less harmless than alcohol) would attract a criminal conviction along with a complete waste of the courts time as punishments are usually a minor fine with an added pointless criminal conviction.
    
    Disclaimer: I do not endorse the government of Canada nor do I subscribe to the lefty nonsense of their child prime minister. BUT.. the Canadian government are in the process of legalising Cannabis almost completely. As with most lefty governments Tax is a high priority and new ways to extract it. In this particular case they are on the right track though it won’t remove the black market, there would increasingly be much less of it and far less people be criminalised for nothing other than making themselves a bit sleepy and inordinately hungry.
    
    One of theses days my arthritis will need treatment as I head to my 60’s. I’d like to think that if I decided to use Cannabis as a form of pain relief I would not be worried about a knock on the door from plod, much less the risk growing it myself or having to go to a mate or a mate of someone in the dark underworld.   Just like with alcohol, there is a difference between use of drugs and misuse of drugs.
  
  If you stop treating drug use as a criminal matter and more of a medical or work safety issue then people are more likely to be open about their addictions and get help.
  
  People often worry about workers turning up stoned. Just treat them the same as workers turning up drunk.

  I would never agree with blanket decriminalisation, but I do think that “Big Pharma” is responsible for a lot of non-patentable remedies available in nature, being kept unavailable even in suitably regulated forms.
  
  I believe there is massive potential for cannabis extracts to be included in safe, regulated products just as St Johns Wort and Arnica are. I see it as suspicious, that in this day and age I still can’t just walk into Hardy’s Healthy Living and buy a Thompson’s, Nature’s Own or Solgar product that contains cannabis extracts, and relieves chronic pain conditions.

        There are athletes setting records, who credit readily available natural substances as part of the reason for their success.

Today it runs a puff piece marking the anniversary of the first batch of Syrian refugees, 10 of whom are now pregnant. One has an epileptic husband.

That’s another constant story in the ODT , the state of our health services.

Why is this poor , broke city creating more problems for itself by bringing in high maintenance foreigners and how is it the ODT can play both sides so readily?

There is some truth in what Stephieboy said, Theodore Dalrymple (a distinguished psychologist as well as one of the best conservative writers) has often said that many Muslim terrorists are suffering from mental health issues; the problem is that Jihad offers a beautiful ready-made pathway for their issues to explode into tragedy; and worse, the western multi-culti-cringing “blame us and our oppression” narrative is like added endorsement and justification.

      Price’s Law was developed from a rather niche area – scientific publication rates. After a quick look, I haven’t found any good summaries that it generalises to “Why does the square root of the number of employees in a company account for 50% of the productivity?”.         Didn’t help much Odakyu-san – it makes sense for independent operators in the examples he uses (e.g., PhD students and composers), but I doubt that 10% of the workers in a car manufacturing plant are producing 50% of the cars, or that 1 person in a shearing gang of 10 is shearing 50% of the sheep. I also thought that the sports analogy he used was a bit off too – of course, certain individuals score most of the points on a team – that’s their role, they are given the ball to do just that – be it Russel Westbrook or Ronaldo. We don’t expect a Tony Woodcock to score as many points as a Dan Carter, to use an example closer to home.
        So, I’d be much more cautious than you when extrapolating from this “law”.

Part of the problem with weed smoking is the many reasonable, rational people who reckon ‘yeah why not decriminalise it man, didn’t do me any harm’ are the sorts of people who had a few puffs, maybe still do, and can function.

The people cannabis really destroys are the people for whom success isn’t guaranteed. Poor Maoris in the Far North & East Cape, but pretty much anywhere.

  If what you say is the case, why is it the “poor Maori’s” in the north are not the same as those “reasonable” people you mentioned? It’s not an excuse and is not to blame.     Maori have very strong family bonds, like other Polynesians.
    I blame the culture far more than the individuals.

      Born up there or not, they have the opportunity to move out and see family when the can like the rest of us. I don’t think PI’s are in the same group. I know more PI’s that are well educated and successful than Maori. It’s the same old problem, it’s the culture of “the world owes us a living” and the treaty will provide. Until then, let’s go to the pub bro or anybody got any weed bro? Violence and entitlement are taught at a young age as history and our jails can attest. My eldest daughters long time boyfriend is the exception to the rule, quiet well educated, doing very well at uni, a thoroughly nice young man but the first in his generation and immediate family to go to university. He is the most non Maori, Maori person I know. Not because of is upbringing but because of the choices he has made and the effort he has made at school. Only they can break the cycle, no amount of government or “whanau hugging” help will make a blind bit of difference. Like I said before, they only have themselves to blame.

        Maori parents who have huge families don’t usually do so because they are supremely dedicated parents.
        They make the older children (and neighbours) raise the kids, (believe me, villages don’t raise kids) and do not worry about the older kids missing out on their education.
        Of course it takes some effort to better yourself, but if you never get a proper education, you are disadvantaged from the start.

We are, of course, having a war on drugs – but it’s a silent war without a shot being fired or an arrest being made.

You basically can’t get certain types of jobs if you’re a low skilled pot smoker. That’s the payoff from National’s H & S legislation. Pretty clever really.

Stoners will get it eventually. All we need is for benefits to be capped at two years total in a lifetime for able bodied men and women, with a commensurate reduction for single mothers i.e. DPB for the first child born out of wedlock only, and you will see real gains in the next ten years.

Come on Bill English. You are supposed to be an honest, hard working Christian man. So introduce the one policy that will see NZ turn its back on the most disastrous, long term policy the country has had in 50 years.

        As for the sisters -it’s not clear whether they could read (reading without writing was not unknown at that time) or write. Judith left a mark rather than a signature on one document, but there is a purported signature for Susanna on another, so who knows.

    “Sover” is the technical term for a particular stage of debate or commentary. It is really a bastardisation of the phrase “it is over” but, like all such bastardisations, has gained respectability over time.
    “Unsoverable” is an extension of the term. It basically means a series of comments or debate that seemingly cannot be brought to an end.
    For example:
    “Notsofast’s fact-free rants about the Lundy case are unsoverable”
    Sources suggest that the term goes back to the 12th century when a monarch at the time slurred:
    “Who will rid me of this unsolverable prig” when referring to one of Stephieboy’s ancestors. Unfortunately, he was misunderstood.
    
    “Umamagble” is a developing term which has really lost its way and is in a state of indecision. Ultimately it will mean one of two things:
    1. Incapable of becoming a mammal or
    2. Incapable of becoming a woman’s breast.

      However, I don’t think you have managed to unmangle amamagble.

        Odakyu-sen would undoubtedly confirm that the verb “amamage” is onomatopoeic, and that a good burst of edamame flatulence basically repeats the sound “amamamamamama” for a good 30 seconds or more. The Japanese, renowned for their subtlety and economy of expression, decided that three syllables was enough to convey the horror of the full experience, and in translation to English we have the verb that is under discussion. An alternative translation of the Japanese expression is “Hiroshima in my trousers” but that has largely been discounted on grounds of good taste.

I have been disturbed to read in recent weeks of unprecedented assaults on human rights in Chechnya.

Reports indicate that gay men are being rounded up, incarcerated, tortured and murdered. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov has denied that this is happening, but this is the same man whose spokesman has claimed that “you cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic” before going on to add, in even more sinister fashion, that “if such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them since their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return.”

Further reports indicate that the Russian Federation is ignoring, and even denying this repression in Chechnya.

Please pass to your government the need to face up to the realities of this abuse, and the need to engage with international organisations in the investigation of allegations and promotion of normal standards of civilised behaviour.

I see Notso is on his Lundy hobby horse again.
First of all Lundy was not what one would call a successful kitchenware salesman. He was struggling to break even. One wonders how he could afford to hire a sex worker. Maybe that was a one off, for use as an alibi. There were no thugs looking for him, and even if there had been they would not have murdered his wife and daughter, what on earth would be the point of them doing that? Lundy was a would be big noter without any notes. Only $20000 equity in his house. He should never have gone unconditional on that land purchase. Had he not done that his wife and child may well have still been alive today.
So far as the Crewe murders are concerned, I am inclined to agree with Notso. Demler does look like the most likely suspect, in my opinion, although I note that the police still reckon that the Arthur Thomas rifle could have been the murder weapon.

I seek advice from those who know far more than me.

Currently I have Sky that costs me around $150.00 per month. I subscribe to it for Discovery, National Gepgraphic, CNN & Fox etc.

If I dump Sky what should I replace it with as not sure if my programmes are on any other sites.

Someone suggested Netflix

  You must have everything Sky delivers…
  We have an $89/month version… No sport,
  but the Nat Geographic/History channel, News channels and Rialto and some other movies.
  
  I ‘d happily scrap Sky. I’m sure I can find other ways to squander $89/month.

  Love Netflix. There is a huge choice of programmes and movies, and you can watch when you have time, finishing off from mid-programme if you left it part way through. We pay $18 a month for 3 devices. You need a Smart TV or do it through your computer, Ipad.
  Still have Sky for now but doubt we’ll continue after the rugby world cup.
