When Trump said he wanted the federal government out of schools did he mean this?

WASHINGTON (AP) ” Students attending private schools in the nation’s capital through a federally funded voucher program are doing worse in math compared to their peers, according to a government study released Thursday.

The findings added fuel to one of the most heated debates in the education community: whether taxpayer money should be used to pay for private schools. Critics jumped on the study to reiterate that vouchers don’t work. Proponents stressed that test scores are not the only way to measure school quality.

The state puts its hand in my pocket, to the tune of a fraction less than 50% of my total income annually. Worse, I get to watch them flush at least a third of that hard earned $ straight down the toilet.

Therefore, I feel obliged – and not guilty at all – to take what I can legally get from the State. And, I will continue to do so.

PM Jenny Shipley was the single reason I changed my voting pattern to Labour for the first and only time in my life. It was my (and many others) ‘F*** You’ to a titanic moron. Where do they find these people?

  Jenny Shipley’s whole ideological background, though, is to reduce both government spending AND taxes. I think you misunderstand / misrepresent her. Along with her stated desire to eliminate handouts to middle class people with assets, is the desire to eliminate handouts of all kinds, and wasteful government spending and wasteful churning of money through government; to give people like you tax cuts that would put you ahead on net.
  
  Eliminating the waste and the churn, does create massive gains “on net”, not to mention the elimination of perverse incentives; unfortunately there are people who perceive themselves to be losers under a smaller-government model, who represent an electoral obstacle to reform. Much of this is because of misrepresentation and falsehoods from the Left (and all its culturally dominant organs) about the net benefit and its magnitude.

    I have always said that if National had kept her on, she could not possibly have led National to a worse election result than what did happen in 2002 – and sticking to principles and making arguments effectively, would result in victory in the political war. That is, winning elections with a mandate for reform according to the principles you are meant to stand for, rather than winning elections on sufferance from the politically correct establishment (MSM etc) by being an unashamed proxy for the Left’s long program.

      Which, considering the 81 year sweep of National Party history, consisted of the two or so years from 1990-92, when Shipley as Minister of Social Welfare cut benefits, Ruth Richardson introduced the Mother of all Budget, and the Employment Contracts Act was passed. Then normal transmission resumed.
      
      Those who talk about National’s “principles” have it wrong. They are pragmatists who unite, and as Kiwis are pragmatists who don’t like division, they reward National with the status of the natural party of Government. Which keeps the likes of former-Labour Party members who are now a bit wiser with age like me happy, and those at the margins like yourself, Philbest, dissatisfied. There is a reason ACT gets 1% of the vote. As per Bob Jones as far back as 1978, and it still rings true:
      
      “I suspect there are few National parliamentarians who are even aware of the party’s constitutional objectives. I have asked many of them including Cabinet Ministers and have yet to find one who can tell me anything about them. The parliamentary National wing has sunk into a middle-ground optional administration oblivious to the party’s historic purposes and ignorant of the dismay of its members…
      In fact National could well replace its present list of constitutional objectives with a single expression of its purpose-‘To seek and retain by whatever means necessary, within the existing democratic system, the political control of New Zealand.’ Possibly a second and shorter objective could be added which would state, ‘To keep the bloody Labour Party out of office.'”

        The problem is, Kimbo, that the “Long March” and “the ratchet effect” is entirely “towards the Left”. So the slide is inevitable unless there is principled leadership on the Right. John Howard: “winning the argument is more important than winning the election”.
        
        If you accept the status quo, then you are accepting that there are no “unintended consequences” to lefty utopianism and progressivism. “Progress” now means “a transition to rule by progressives” (Theodore Dalrymple).
        
        Things have got far worse since Jones wrote those insightful comments. But he did something about it at the time, didn’t he?

    Yep. and worse she has no idea at all of the damage the Nats. did when Ruth the All Hat and No Trousers and herself removed $25 of an already pitiful benefit of $125.
    
    They apparently still believe that thousands of people who had no work (unemployment was 12%) ( because of Govt. policy and ineptitude), could survive on $100 a week. They couldn’t and thousands for the next 20 years voted with their feet. Aussie supported them when our piss poor pollies had no idea what made the world go round.
    Of course Bolger was their leader for a lot of that time and history shows that he had no idea either.
    
    The fact that removing this amount from benefits caused thousands of businesses to close doesn’t seem to have penetrated any of their consciousness either. For that is what happened and seemingly the fact that it happened again under Shipley’s watch in her capacity as a company director doesn’t seem to have bothered her either. Shipley can make all the excuses she like about that debacle but the fact remains she had a responsibility and failed those people just as she did earlier.
    
    I am always somewhat suspicious of retreads who for some reason or other pop back up in the limelight so am left wondering just what this is about. There always seems to be an ulterior motive. Last week we had Bolger telling us that neo liberalism hasn’t worked, now Shipley telling us we need more of it.
    Will next week bring us Ruth telling us we all need to sell out to the Chinese or some such?
    Is there any connection to anything USA side? What is happening with the Clinton trail?
    Shipley all about Shipley.
    
    Bolger and Shipleys governments were responsible for the poor performance of the NZ economy for near on 20 years.

100 days of making America great again!

The wall is being built (um, maybe)
The Mexicans will pay for it (um, no)
The Muslims aren’t allowed in (um, no, pesky Constitution)
Obamacare’s been replaced (um, no)
We’re draining the swamp (hell no!)
The US is out of NAFTA (um, no, after advisors used pictures to explain how it would hurt his voters)
And won’t get involved in Syria without Congress’ approval (um, no)
China’s a currency manipulator (um, no again)
NATO’s obsolete (um, no apparently)
Trump’s too busy to golf (awkward!)
And he’s released his tax returns (um, but wait till after the 2018 mid-terms …)
But he’s given himself a big tax cut (well actually that one might come true …)

Turns out this being President thing is easy eh? (um, no, turns out the Orange God King now admits he got that wrong too).

        Who is “they”? Not the Republican establishment, they were dragged kicking and screaming into “Candidate Trump”, by the Primary Voters.
        
        It shows how mistrusted the Republican establishment is, that the voters gave them the middle finger. A mass return to trust in the Republican establishment is not on the cards, it is now a question of outsiders who claim convincingly enough to be “the one who won’t sell out this time”. Maybe even a third party or independent.
        
        And it needs a whole movement of outsiders, including Congress and Senate candidates. Half the representatives are still good “establishment” loyalists.

        Trump did sign an executive order to begin wall construction using existing funds.
        That wont build much more wall- there is substational wall sections now- thats why Anne Coulter is wrong.
        He does need congressional approval to to do more than a token build, as its very expensive.

      Trump is a Republican president, and Republicans control both houses. There is no impediment to him building a wall. The Republican House & Senate can approve the budget allocation. Trump can build his wall. And it’s completely valid for him to do that.
      
      But where he will get shown up is that the Mexicans aren’t going to pay for it. It will be American taxpayer that pays for it – either through their taxes or via a tariff that raises the cost of the Mexican-produced goods they buy.

        You forget about Senate filibuster.
        To avoid having Democrats block his spending bill in Senate, they use something called reconciliation which severely limits what you can include in the spend.
        The idea that the GOP is some sort of unanimous block of votes in Congress is naive. The Obmaacare repeal showed that. Couldnt even get a vote in the house, which is usually much much easier to organise than senate.
        
        In NZ terms its easier to think of Senators and Congressman/woman as more like Peter Dunne. Change this, do something extra for me to get mu vote

        But if the wall was a critical policy plank for the Republicans (as Ann Coulter says it is) then they would fall into line to fund what is, in the great US budget scheme of things, a relatively small amount.
        
        That they aren’t falling over themselves to fund it (which we can infer by Trump’s offer to horse-trade with the Dems over wall + Obamacare funding) says that the House Republicans know the wall is a dog of a policy. It’s telling that the Texan Republicans don’t want it – and they have the longest stretch of land border.
        
        But if Trump doesn’t build it then he’s crippled if he wants to run again in 2020 (which personally I don’t believe he will do).

        I think the 100 days is a bit pointless. Especially given how the Dems has slow walked all his appointments.(30 hours of assessment for each!- gosh those guys take a lot of breaks too) I think he has only just managed to get the first layer of his Admin appointed (?)   It might be the right’s turn now. There’s still time.
  
  One hidden problem, may be that even a sincere candidate may be getting “got to” by very dark forces once they are elected. I would expect any elected President with as-yet-unrevealed skeletons in their closet, to be putty in the hands of behind-the-scenes string-pullers who know too much about everyone.

      Trumps real problem is he didnt have a landslide, GOP lost seats in Senate and House this election.
      When you bring in the numbers on your coattails- as the yanks call it- you have some cred.
      
      The other side is the Republicans have only been united on NO to Obama for the past 8 years- some will just carry on with No to Trump.
      best thing though is Trump will absolutely definitely not run for President again.

  The first 100 days of the Trump administration have certainly made an impact.
  Both politicians and international leaders would likely agree both Washington and the world have felt a disruptive force.
  Protests and demonstrations against Trump and his agenda met the presidency from day one. A massive women’s march paralysed the US capital on day two.
  Though a political outsider, Trump’s cabinet raised eyebrows, as former military generals, Wall Street insiders and Republican party loyalists took key positions in the new Administration.
  Controversies quickly ensued over a series of executive orders and actions.
  The first targeted Obamacare, but it was an executive order on immigration that sparked chaos at US airports and lawsuits. The initial orders were stopped by federal judges.
  The president forged new relationships with world leaders, meeting with several both in the White House and at the President’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
  International relations took a focus after a chemical weapons attack in Syria prompted Trump to respond by firing dozens of missiles at a Syrian airfield.
  In Afghanistan, the US for the first time deployed the largest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal on an ISIS target.
  
  Tensions between the US and North Korea are reaching boiling point
  In Asia, tensions with North Korea neared a boiling point. The new president bucking against the international status quo in dealing with the reclusive country.
  The administration found itself the target of investigations both in Congress and in Capitol Hill over what role Russia might have played in influencing the campaign.
  One casualty of the scrutiny was National Security Advisor Mike Flynn, who was asked to resign as questions lingered over his relationship with Russian officials.

  The White House also organised campaign style rallies, an unusual practice in a non-election year.
  The administration will face head-winds as it looks to attempt healthcare reform again, and pass spending legislation in which it hopes to fund a border wall with Mexico.

  There will be a wall, tenders for it are already out. Illegal immigration is already way down.
  The Mexicans will pay for it, the mechanism is not decided yet.
  Muslim immigration is being dealt with. The executive orders are being overturned but the vetting procedures are being put in place and that’s the more important thing.
  The freedom caucus has agreed to a revised Healthcare bill and it will go before Congress shortly.
  The people Trump has appointed are top notch and already advances are being made. Education is one area – look for big things from Betsy Vos.
  Trump is renegotiating Nafta.
  
  I could go on and on. Your points are all wrong. Try not to fall into the same trap as other formerly worthwhile commentators on this blog who let their butt hurt and dislike of Trump lead them into making fools of themselves.

    I agree that a wall will be built. Or rather, that segments of wall will be built … but land acquisition issues alone will ensure no contiguous wall is completed within Trump’s term(s).
    
    And I don’t see the Mexicans paying for it. That bus has departed.
    
    The revised healthcare bill will go nowhere because moderate Republicans know that slashing healthcare on their watch will see them lose too much ground in 2018.
    
    Some of Trump’s appointments are top-notch. For example Mattis, Cohn & Mnuchin. Others (Flynn, Spicer, Vos and I suspect Tillerson) will prove to be complete drop-kicks unworthy of office.
    
    Any renegotiation of NAFTA will be inconsequential changes grudgingly allowed by Canada and Mexico only in order for Trump to save face (which realpolitik will force them to allow). The USA benefits from NAFTA (and free-trade more broadly) to an enormous extent. It’s just that in this modern world the benefits accrue to Wall Street, Silicon Valley & Hollywood rather than to the Rust Belt. The honest truth is that the Rust Belt stopped making products the world desired in about 1970. Caterpillar & Harley Davidson are some of the few exceptions.
    
    I could go on and on. Try not to fall into the same trap as the other Trumpkin commentators on this blog who begin drinking before lunch, leading them into making fools of themselves.

    So I totally respect Trump’s right to build a wall and to stop “Muslim immigration”. Those were his policies and he won an election on them.
    
    But. He has to respect the Constitution. And the reality is he cannot force another sovereign country to pay for a domestic policy (short of war).
    
    So I have no problem with what he wants to do. Just how he thinks he’s going to do it.

      That’s as silly as saying shops should not put in security because they will never stop ALL shoplifting.
      
      That $16bn cost would be pretty much a once-off plus, say, $2 bn for ongoing maintenance and running costs over and above what they were already spending . Over 10 years that would amortize to approx $4bn a year.
      
      If they manage to stop just 5% then they’re winning.

    No. Bits of wall will be built, because its such a critical policy for Trump. But Obama’s experience of building a wall says there’s no way Trump can acquire the land in his timeframes. Eminent domain takes years to grind through the courts.

      As the article notes there will be those returned to parliament from these two party’s who would be natural allies and even possible future candidates for En Marche.       EBOP never used to collect rates from ratepayers as they are funded from Quayside Holdings which is the holding company that owns 50% of Port of Tauranga shares. That wasn’t enough for the greedy pricks so they now suck the ratepayer tit to the tune of $300 odd per household.

Everyone at Kiwiblog knows Moriori were a separate black-skinned people who were invaded and wiped out by Maori…but now some alleged Moriori have mysteriously reappeared and are helping the state tell a new story…can anyone point towards a reliable account of the true Moriori history? A group of these people settled on the Chatham Islands and developed a separate culture over time.     Sorry mikenmild but I have learned from Kiwiblog that Moriori were a separate race who arrived before Maori then got wiped out by the invaders. So now I am alerting the Kiwiblog community to the fact that this history is being rewritten with taxpayer money. Also how can there be Moriori living today when they were all wiped out by Maoris ages ago. Someone needs to find the old books with the true history that the PC establishment has been trying to hide since the 1980s.       The article doesn’t say there are Moriori alive today.
      Tommy Solomon shown in the picture is believed by all the Chatham Islanders to be the last “full blooded” Moriori. Maui Solomon mentioned in the piece is a lawyer “who knows his stuff ” , is passionate about his heritage and he would make absolutely sure what is now written in the Journals is right.

    Yeah, they all fought each other anyway, and early colonial historianship assumed that some of the “other people” that Maori legends describe, (including proud accounts of their elimination) were other “races”, maybe even “indigenous”.
    
    But they were all still fighting each other anyway in the 1800’s, so it is easy to accept that the Morioris were just earlier canoe-loads wiped out by later-arriving canoe-loads.
    
    It is also possible that people other than “Polynesians from Hawaiiki” arrived by canoe at different times. Polynesians are not the only island-dwelling dark-skinned races in the Pacific. So there may have been others that Polynesian arrivals recognised as “different”.
    
    However, this history tends to support “NZ as Terra Nullius”. It was no-one’s “country” until Kuini Wikitoria, at the voluntary choice of the enlightened Chiefs of the time. Where the disgraceful historical revision has come in, regards the Treaty and its interpretation. And it is only since around 2000 that the truth and the facts have come to deem one a “racist” for stating them. Vichy National since 2008 are responsible for a lot, even Helen Clark wasn’t going to bend over like they have.

        My point is NOT that there was a “legitimate indigenous NZ race wiped out by Maori”, but that both “Moriori” and Maori were merely waves of arrivals by canoe, over centuries, all of whom fought with whoever arrived before them, and fought among each other! Even back in Hawaiiki or whatever other island they came from, they fought each other. All on tribal lines.
        
        I don’t think this history matters, what matters is how NZ at the time of the Treaty, is regarded, and understanding of the motivations of those who signed the Treaty. The idea that “Maori” were a nation with “property” and an “economy” and a “development” path is ABSURD. They signed the Treaty so as to make a huge leap into the future as citizens of the world’s fastest-progressing empire. Imagine New Guinean Highland tribes today voluntarily becoming a US dependency (like Puerto Rico and American Samoa) – what would they “lose”, for Pete’s sake?

      After founding “canoe” settlement iwi were involved in a survival of the fittest defence of the occupation of their lands, what distinguished the group that went to the Chathams was they wanted no part of that game and thus moved offshore as it were.
      
      Thus developed in isolation from the others, and were easily defeated when marauders came.
      
      Distinctive DNA amongst the Moriori remnant is the only evidence for this group being of a distinctive group origin. Male line Y chromosome DNA would be the most telling, but if the remnant is only maternal Moriori this may not be available to determine one way or another.

        Archeological evidence of settlement of the Chathams prior to Maori arrival in Aotearoa is lacking to confirm the canoe direct from east Polynesia to Chathams (1000 years ago) story.
        
        However, if true, it could have resulted in a migration to the mainland before Maori arrived from the Cooks/Atiu (language connection).
        
        DNA wise, Polynesian mitochondrial DNA is B from a Taiwan source, with varying levels of male line Y chromosome DNA. It is this maternal DNA which is uniform in the cultural group. The Y chromosome C is dominant amongst Maori (80%-O10%) (French Polynesia 50%/O40%, Samoa 40%/O 50%). O is the most common in China/Korea/Japan/SE Asia. C is found mostly in SE Asia (some C and K in China), as are M and K. Maori has small amounts of N from north Asia, French Polynesia 5% K, Samoa 5-10% M and K.

1. What are the books and articles that tell the true story of Moriori and early NZ history that have been suppressed since historians went PC in the ’80s? What are they called and where can I find them.

2. Before the PC craze everyone knew Moriori were an extinct race conquered long ago by Maori and eaten. So how come they can now be around in the Chatham Islands and parroting the PC historian line?

      I would say Michael King is the most respected researcher we have (had) on the Moriori. From what I can see the “old books” weren’t based on the same level of actual rigour and research, but rather just wrote down tales and fables.

        Sure, we can argue about which books are a true representation of history but your rubbish whack conspiracy about PC book burning in the 80s is garbage.
        
        Read the Wikipedia page. There’s references there to a paper in 1904 or such that describes the similarities between Maori and Moriori. There are papers from the 60s and 70s that hypothesize that that the Maori were not distinct from the Moriori.
        
        That large swaths of people were taught something from an incorrect hypotheses in the 60s, 70s and 80s doesn’t make it true. I would have thought that was obvious. Is the world flat? Is smoking good for you?

The abrupt departure of Jean-Francois Jalkh from the National Front (FN) party leadership before he had even taken on the job raised ghosts of the FN’s past and revived a furor sparked by Le Pen’s father when he called the Nazi gas chambers a “detail” of history.

The renewed controversy threatens moves by Le Pen, who expelled her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, from the party two years ago, to cleanse the FN’s image of xenophobic and anti-semitic associations and make it more palatable to a broader electorate.

At issue are comments attributed to Jalkh in a conversation with a researcher in 2005 about the work of a professor convicted more than once for questioning the scale of Jewish extermination in Nazi gas chambers during World War Two. Also unearthed was a 1991 report that said Jalkh attended a rally held by supporters of Marshal Philippe Petain, French wartime leader and Nazi collaborator, in July of that year.

Le Pen’s father has been convicted of inciting racial hatred for his remarks on the Holocaust, and referred to them himself as recently as 2015.

Stephie I think Le Pen is making it clear she won’t tolerate either Jews or Muslims who won’t assimilate. Jewish groups are upset because she a) says she will ban kosher food and b) says Jews must choose between French and Israelis citizenship. Le Pen is going to make sure Middle Eastern immigrant groups assimilate…or leave.

        Not sure about halal but with Kosher meat there is very strict religious rules around only qualified people can do it, knife has to be razor sharp, how to kill the animal the quickest with least distress etc
        
        Under Kosher rules you can’t eat hunted animals because it is likely the animal was caused distress and the death was not quick

        I don’t think it’s because of animal welfare that Jews are not supposed to eat hunted animals. Here is an internet explanation:
        
        However, an animal qualifying as being kosher – hooves and cud – is only the first step, there is then the inspection, proper slaughter, secondary inspection, and kashering of the meat.
        
        Venison is allowable, but only if it is from farmed deer.
        
        I think you are mistaken in assuming hunted animals have a slower death than those butchered in a slaughter house.
        
        You won’t win an argument in NZ by asserting that kosher/halal killing is more humane than our usual means of slaughter.

    Southern Raider, Marine Le Pen, in regard to halal and kosher food, is reported to have said she will ban halal and Jewish animal slaughter techniques.
    
    Perhaps someone can authoritatively explain what these techniques entail. I understand it means the animals cannot be stunned or made semi-conscious by electrical shock – the practice in most Western slaughter houses.
    
    Additionally, in NZ at least, halal meat is killed by Muslim slaughtermen, who perform some sort of brief Muslim ritual as they kill.
    
    If this is correct, the row over halal and kosher slaughter might not boil down to a battle between, on the one hand, Muslims and Jews, and on the other, politicians of the far right. Muslims and Jews might be up against Western animal rights advocates and animal lovers generally.

So he is not actually homeless but more just a vagrant who hauls his load of junk from one blighted area to another.
Looking at the photos even if he leaves the croquet shelter looks like it could be a write off as it probably suffers from a flea and vermin infestation by now.

Another row for the Westland District Council, which recently signed works contracts linked with an Auckland cakeshop owner.

This time there are accusations that a nest egg of the small township of Kumara has been hijacked to build a Chinese garden.

What is it with Chinese gardens in the South Island? Dunedin opened one with great hou-ha, and Invercargill apparently is building one.

Because they own the media and many other things, they pretend it’s normal and pretty soon so it becomes.

That’s how it works.

People who grew up when it wasn’t normal still remember but over decades of repetition they become outliers.

They also design the education system at all levels from primary to tertiary and this is how they launch these memes, such as this one.

They’re always connected to other things. The bathrooms are another instance of this same thing.

But that’s what they do and how they do it, in a nutshell.

And over time, several decades, it becomes embedded into the national psyche and behaviours change.

That’s how they do it.

The trick is to see how the threads join into ropes. Then trace the rope. The threads are things like this transgender sport idiocy and the bathrooms (and various others). The ropes are the connections you make from the various threads, as you identify them, through the memes you see them developing, which you see in the media, in the news, in hollyweird, on TV soaps, etc. When they all start talking about and portraying the same broad theme, you know it’s yet another thread or rope.

Then once you have a rope, have a look around on Google to see why on Earth they would want to do something like say, promote transgenderism all of a sudden, when they weren’t doing that before.

Mexico has a lot of cement and many cement plants – some American owned. Now where is this concrete going to be made? and how much employment will it create for Mexico and USA?

There is coverage of the slips blocking the Manawatu Gorge on Stuff.
It looks like they are trucking the rubble away to the Woodville end which must be costing a fortune.
I would tell the digger driver to push as much as possible over the side while no one is watching so that the job is carried out quickly and not subject to major delays because of RMA.

In Gen Debate today I learned about the degree to which the PC establishment is destroying NZ history. Like lots of other KB commenters I remember being taught that Moriori were a pre-Maori black people who were conquered and eaten after fleeing to the Chathams. This was common sense. Everyone knew it. But in the space of a few years a new PC consensus has been imposed, and when I asked for references to the old true histories of early NZ no one at Kiwiblog could even give one. That shows that the very fabric of our reality is being altered by the PC police. Books are being suppressed, People think that if something is not on the internet it does not exist. A new false history is being created and no one can do anything. We all feel that something is wrong, that the truth is being lost, but none of us can even remember the past. I bet the lost books that tell the true story of NZ are being burnt right now by the PC police.

    You are a victim of the destruction of history just as much as me mike. The time has come for us to come together and try to locate the lost books that tell our true history. Perhaps some have not yet been burned or survive on forgotten shelves somewhere. But if they are revealed and shown to the masses them an uprising will surely result. Look at how hard the state and its international allies fight to destroy anyone who discovers the lost true stories. Allan Titford who discovered the incredible truth of vast cities in the bush made by the ancient inhabitants of NZ was sent to jail for 24 years. I understand if you fear his fate. Here are the facts as I see them

1. We all were taught that the first NZers were Moriori at school. This was foundational. We were taught Maori conquered enslaved slaughtered Moriori. That Moriori were extinct

2. Now the state through its official organs is saying the very opposite that Moriori still exist and that they did not rule over NZ before Maori

3. We the freethinking community at Kiwiblog know this is a lie…but we can’t find any evidence. This is because what was common sense when we were kids has been suppressed, travestied, destroyed. The very fabric of reality has been altered. The PC establishment has used the internet and books to rewrite history. The old true histories have disappeared.
