In the past weeks we have been inundated with new ideas to help the
natives get ahead in life. They lead in all the wrong statistics. 50 %
of the prison population is Maori. 63% of these are illiterate, they
cannot even read or write the basics. These are abysmal figures when
they only make up 15% of the population. Maori prisons, whanau ora, te
reo in all schools are touted as the answer. But mention charter schools
and liabore and their co-boat crew are adamant that, despite the good
reports coming out how these Charter schools ARE making a difference,
they will close them down.
I cannot understand their opposition to something that is taking the
dropouts from the state schools and giving them a better education.
It’s not about helping the students, but all about protecting the
useless teachers in the state schools. After a minimum of 10 years in
the state school system, how can good teachers let any students leave
being unable to read and write.

  Because that’s not the priority in our Schools anymore.
  A friend has a 5 year-old new entrant- The kid is already learning Maori and all about ‘Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi’..

    A lot of this is due to putting short-term feelings ahead of achievement.
    
    The absolute best thing to do to a child that is not achieving is to fail them so they repeat the material and then go on to future years with a firm foundation.
    
    Instead they push the kid through because the kid might get upset (and it’s also easier for the teacher than dealing with the parents complaining).
    
    So the kid never gets their basics right and get pushed along with no learning until they’re old enough to leave school.
    
    On top of that, kids are less likely to thrive unless they have good role models and are surrounded by people who respect and value learning.
    
    If the parents don’t care, then there’s a problem. Then they get fed the tall-poppy lines by families and peers: “So you think you’re better than me and don’t want to be a labourer?”, “You’re acting white.”
    
    Damn hard to thrive in an environment than that. And unfortunately the taxpayer can’t fix that.

    That’s just a wee bit of an urban myth LK unless your friend’s child has a teacher who isn’t sticking by the curriculum. New entrants get 30 minutes a week te reo (nothing on the TOW) and as I recall back in the 50’s we got more than our fair share of Maori culture at my suburban primary school. I certainly do not endorse a heavy emphasis on Maori subjects but in this day and age rightly or wrongly kids should at least have a basic understanding.
    
    All schools run an excellent remedial programme for new entrants with a reading problem. Schools have a staff member who has completed an intense specialist course and children with reading difficulty receive weekly one on one sessions to either remedy the problem or make referrals in the event of specialist help being required eg dyslexia. Unfortunately these programmes need parental effort and input to succeed and all too often that does not happen.

  Don’t blame the teachers, holy.
  The kids are illiterate because mum keeps them out of school to babysit the latest baby/cashcow.
  I’ve seen it with my neighbours.
  One time the latest baby had a black eye from the 6 year old looking after it accidentally running it into a table corner.
  After missing large chunks of their education, the young baby minders get so far behind, they give up on learning.

    Poor attendance at school will explain why some children are failing to succeed in our education system, but it’s not the main reason.
    
    I’m about to head off for my volunteer literacy stint at a local secondary school.
    My charges can read, but their comprehension skills are very poor. As far as I can make out, no-one has ever asked them questions about the stuff put in front of them.
    They don’t seem to write stories/essays on a regular basis.
    Their vocabularies are limited.
    Their general knowledge (basic geography, famous people (ie today’s media/music stars)) is limited.
    
    I do blame teachers up to a point… it’s their job to engage with their pupils, provide feedback to them, chat with them about their work, pick up on missed basics..

      Sounds also like their spirit of curiosity (which kids naturally have, certainly pre-teenage) has not been cultivated earlier. Difficult for a teacher if the home environment is not a place of ready intellectual stimulation. Is all very well saying “it takes a village”, but if the village/immediate social circle is limited…that is what it produces in succeeding generations.

        Yes, but parents still remain the primary educators. Despite the specialist skills teachers bring, in most cases they can only succeed to the point at which parents engage in the education process – by encouragement, supervision, and interest in their child’s education. If those are missing, then no matter how much money or teacher input are thrown at the problem, it is bloody hard. Is like a crab trying to escape a bucket of them – as soon as one gets up near the edge about to escape, another pulls it back.

        Parental input is crucial, which is why the kids of certain migrant groups end up going to university and into the professions, even though their parents could barely speak English when they arrived in the country.

      I remember once, in my high school days in the largely pre-computer age expressing my surprise that a Polynesian friend did not have a dictionary at home. I wasn’t very “culturally aware or sensitive”. Nonetheless, when he went home and said that to his parents (not my intention and in their defence they were hard working immigrants who loved their kids although their English was limited), in a sense of what was likely social shame or whatever, they bought one.

      Anecdotally and yes the usual suspects will shoot me down for posting without “hard evidence”…
      Primary schools are required to measure the students against achievement to national standards.
      BUT, how they measure that achievement is called an overall teacher judgement.
      There are a number of systems that are available to assist with that judgement, but I will use literacy as my example. Students can be measured in one system by how fast they can read, in another by how many words they recognise and in a third, by how many words they actually understand.
      Now a school will choose how they want to measure the students, not by how best it recognises the students ability, but by how best it represents the image that the school wants to present to the Ministry.
      If a school wants to show that they are successful in their teaching, they will use a system that shows the highest number at or above average, however, if the school doesn’t care about image and simply wants more “support’ funding, then they will use a system that shows more below average.
      NOTE: this is not all schools, but it is a large number.
      In all this though, they miss the key function, i.e. ensuring that students leave school with the ability to read AND understand what they are reading.

      At present great books are available in ample quantities and very cheaply at sales, such as by Rotary, and at charity shops and traditional second hand book shops.
      
      There seems to be a particular glut, perhaps caused by the surge in video and online watching (and bloody blogs?)
      
      Sadly, I rarely see folk from ethnic minorities at these sales and places. How can we encourage them to get books there for their kids?

      Special “make it easy” stuff does not help either.
      
      Even science etc has been corrupted.
      
      Kids can choose between doing a project about something (requiring reading, writing, developing skills in analysing and presenting data) or they can do a rap (see how many times they can say fuckin mofo in a few minutes).
      
      Somehow the cuddles-oriented educators think these should be given equal value.

  My 7-year old son has learning difficulties that were not picked up in Year 1 and in Year 2 we were told he was not interested, easily distracted and bothered the other kids. His reading was terrible.
  
  We were quite concerned and we did hearing checks, eye checks that came back fine but he has a listening disorder (APD). The school deal in mainstream kids and accept that there is a percentage failure rate. We got my son a Speld teacher for additional learning and he’s improved out of sight. Our own research found that kids like him are not alone and can make their way all through the school system literally not learning anything so I’m not surprised that some teenagers leave school unable to read!
  
  Without our intervention, he might have ended up on the scrap heap. We see the same pattern with teenagers that go on to commit crime and go off the rails – learning difficulties then branded as “trouble” and that’s that.
  
  I think Charter Schools are able to recognise those patterns and respond with more one-on-one learning; more time for them to learn. That Labour want to kill off these schools and send these kids back to the mainstream schools is shocking. Seeing Chris Hipkins on the TV last night with a smug smile (he probably thought it was “looking confident”) said it all. What a bunch of dickheads.

    Learning takes place when a child has the desire to do it. There are a number of requirements which most children become familiar with from a stable and organised home background and/or pre-school attendance. It is often easy for a teacher to predict future “learning difficulties” from the language, attitude and manner of the mother and child from very early days at school. Parents are fond of discovering other reasons for their child not achieving to place blame on the school and so hide the fact that their basic development and practice of reasonable pre-school behaviours has not prepared their child for beginning at school nor continuing successfully with the rest of their education.

      Mother was a teacher of intermediate children who had ‘special needs’ (the term in the 60’s) and my partner who is a DP some 50 years later and both would affirm the importance of the family with their combined input that is crucial in determining the child’s outcome.

    Charter schools are working because the teachers are engaged with the pupils. The parents may be too. It seems there is a shortage of even adequate teachers.
    
    Some children may not be involved; its a teacher’s duty to change that. That takes skill.

  I’ve come to the conclusion Ian Fleming’s James Bond, and also the movie version that has developed over 50 years is a male adult’s version of Enid Blyton’s ‘Famous Five’.
  
  Bond, the quintessential English (yes, I know he was born in Scotland) whitebread male who built British Empire turns up, and shit starts happening, in the course of which he disposes of all manner of swarthy and unreliable foreigners (Blyton: gypsies) in a series of deus machina plot twists that see him prevail over evil in the course of a ripping adventure, interspersed with ready culinary delights that just appear (Fleming, like Blyton originally invented his character when rationing was still in place in Britain: beluga caviar and foie gras washed down with Château Mouton Rothschild 1947 = ham sandwiches with mustard, scones with jam and cream and homemade lemonade. Bond girls with kinky names and vodka martinis (shaken not stirred – even though that’s not how you are meant to make them) are just the next next step beyond the pre-pubescent version of gratifying Freudian appetites.
  
  But someone has probably already subjected both to that critique and gained a PhD from it.

      I got hooked on reading by Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series (I didn’t think much of the Secret Seven and didn’t care for Noddy much, either, but Hubby read all the Noddy books to our kids).

But yeah, kids should be allowed their version of pulp fiction. As long as they are reading something they like, it means they are developing, spelling, grammar and reading comprehension skills.       In my younger days I used to read a lot and read all of Nevil Shute books, A Town Like Alice and loved his books but in them days I ended up getting Migraine head aches and stopped reading apart from sports books which I read occasionly now days..

      I preferred the “Secret Seven”, but neither really appealed. I was a “Swallows and Amazon’s” type myself. And we were brought up on A.A. Milne and did the same ourselves, never fancied Noddy.
      
      A family friend had all the Bond books, and when we were old enough we were allowed to read them – a bit “spicy” back then. Must say though that reading the books puts a damper on the films. They were hardly “high literature”, but often ripping good adventure yarns and great escapism.

He was right.

I would like a politician – any politician, maybe Winston Peters, to advise all Maori who are struggling to find their whakapapa and return to their marae, to take advantage of that structure.

Basically put Maori problems back onto Maori.

    KevOB: Quite so…it is also not widely known that it was HE, and not the horrible whitey, who mandated that no Maori would be spoken at school…His logic was that the kids spoke Maori at home, but they needed to be also fluent in English to succeed in the modern world, and the best way to achieve fluency was total immersion in English…Just like they do with Maori at those kupapa thingies…
    
    It was Ngata therefore – as Minister of Education – who introduced the “caning for speaking Maori” policy now boringly trotted out as yet another example of oppression by the honkey.

        The implication of cha’s rhetorical question is right in that Ngata was not Minister of Education. Nonetheless, DG is right in his intent because, as Minister of Native Affairs Ngata had much input into Maori education policies and practices as, in practical terms, before urbanisation, the Maori and Pakeha worlds were largely separate.
        
        But not always as much input as he desired however. For example, he wanted Maori prepared in school for entry into the professions, not just the labouring and manual jobs that paternalistic Pakeha politicians decided was more beneficial and pragmatically suitable for Maori at that time.
        
        Also, Ngata, while rejecting much of what he considered the then-regressive elements in Maoridom such as tangi, and tohunga during the time he was one of the “Young Maori Party”, always understood he and his people were Maori. Was a case of reforming and updating his culture, rather than rejecting it entirely to become brown-skinned Pakeha.

  Yup MM. I’m with you on this one.
  
  It is just plain staggering that the CE who showed a total absence of any common sense or judgment regarding this whole affair and the staggering misuse of public funds – got rewarded by being put in the role with a core function of spotting this sort of thing happening across the state sector.
  
  It’s as utterly crazy as putting Saudi Arabia on the UN Human Rights council! Or putting Roger Sutton in a gender respect in the workplace job.

        I am not going to be very happy with such a limited definition as a word that qualifies a verb.
        
        As we well know, an adverb can qualify an adjective, a verb, and an adverb. Probably most folks can (easily) recognise the -ly adverbs, but few can confidently recognise these as adverbs…the, just, tomorrow.

Labour leader Andrew Little has had some behind the scenes help from an acting coach.

At his speech at the party conference yesterday, an unassuming figure in the back row turned out to be respected stage and screen actor and director, Ross Jolly.

“He had not seen me in live performance and he came along to see the live performance,” Mr Little told Newshub.

Mr Jolly is best known for his work as John from Kiwi classic comedy Gliding On – but now he’s been tasked with providing “thespian assistance” to the leader of the opposition.

“Coaching me, not in acting, no I can assure you of that, no just to give me a few tips on presentation style for those big set piece speeches,” Mr Little said.

So now we know; Andrew Little isn’t at all sincere; it’s all a big act. Sadly though, he’s just playing the role of leader of the Labour Party as an understudy, while the real star turn waits in the wings for his turn…

    The art or occupation of performing fictional roles in plays, films, or television.
    
    or alternatively:
    
    Temporarily doing the duties of another person.
    
    Given the number of leadership changes in Labour since 2008, one could argue that Little is indeed the ACTING leader of the Labour Party. But in terms of “performing fictional roles”, he’s not likely to get through too many auditions. It’ll be “Don’t call us, we’ll call you”!

I am disappointed to learn that Mike King has resigned from his role in the area of principally the rapid deterioration in Maori Mental Health.
That he does not agree with the draft report on Mental Health relates in particular to Children taking their own life.
Surely Mike you would be better served carrying on the work you have and are doing, but would respectfully suggest you look for some answers to the problem – look at the source.
From what one reads today is that money is the answer to all the many New Zealand problems.
This is not – that is superficial – go back some time and put some real facts together so that simple people like me can see the cause.
From there we can judge the future better – complaining it is the Government’s fault is not the answer.

  Mike King has not given up the work he has been doing in the community. King resigned from the govt committee he was appointed to. King wanted, and believed he had secured a plan to reduce suicide by 20% , only to find after several 8 hour long meetings of the committee that the result was a flowery Maori name and a proposal to work toward every NZ’er having a happy life, or words to that effect.

      By Maori admission they arrived here, say, 800 years ago. That may make them an early settler group but not indigenous. Their rights are by virtue of being here earlier. Maori are tribal Pacific migrants like most of Polynesia. They have myths and language in common.

Does one Conference to your members make you a better person, speaker, policy deliverer or Leader I doubt it very much but the media are dribbling about how improved Andrew Little was at the Labour Conference. Maybe it was the Kiss or flowers that he gave his wife but he still looked the same spewed the same message about the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer and announced his same under cooked poorly drafted policy that could take us back to the 1900’s. So the Policy might not help the Labour Party but the look and speech have enabled the media to say hes turned the corner so Labour now has a winner.

So the bus drivers unions are planning strikes over the change of contractors. Seems they have forgotten that the last two bus strikes fell flat on the face. Eastbourne bus drivers refused to collect fares and residents called into the council office to pay the uncollected fares. The last of the annual pre-Christmas bus strikes in Wellington failed when people just made other arrangements through clenched teeth and City Councillors (including Labour ones) held out against the union.
Seems any proposed strike would be illegal since the issue the unions want to strike over is beyond the control of the incumbent employers, Tranzit (the proposed major replacement contractor) is not their employer and there is no formal ‘industrial’ relationship with the Regional Council. In reality it is a strike against the Regional Council and passengers as shown by the unions ‘inviting’ local mayors to the proposed stop work meetings.

Dont have “negative gearing” on my rental properties. Meeting with accountant yesterday. Says vote liebour as this will enable you to put up rents by $35 a week to match increases by those with “neg gearing”. A bit shocked until I saw his tongue in his cheek, but a smile on his face.

  People don’t quite understand that rents are held down by competition, and the floor is the level of rent that provides an acceptable rate of return compared to other investment choices.
  
  If house prices are not increasing as fast, that reduces returns. If losses cannot be attributed to other incomes, that reduces returns as well. Rents must therefore increase to achieve the desired rate of return on investment.
  
  There is a way to take the heat out of the housing market without creating upward pressure on rents. It is to reduce taxes and regulations on other forms of investment making them more attractive compared to property. Neither Red Labour nor Blue Labour is likely to do that though.

    Surly rents are governed by the return on capital being the current value of the property not CV.
    So if the current sale price of a house is $500,000 then the banks for such an investment will offer around 3.5% before tax say $14,000 net. From that the owner will have to pay rates, insurance and any repairs – say $3,000 pa. So net return by this measure is $11,000 pa.
    That is 2.2% return on property.
    A rental is worth say 4% or $20,000 pa on a good tenancy or $384 per week to stand still. Whilst repairs and maintenance are offsettable as an expense why bother.
    Financially it is not worth being a landlord.

      Don Brash was right in a way when he said it was more economic to rent (implying your capital could get a better return elsewhere). However people crave for the security home ownership brings.
      Bob Jones said industrial property (ie big tin sheds) returned 10% on value after expenses although that has eased back somewhat in modern times. If tin sheds were returning 10% (and the tenants are generally solvent and stable) I figured that residential rentals should give a 15% rate of return given the extra hassle of dealing with tenants, more wear and tear, vacant periods etc. But I would have to be joking suggesting such a rate of return.

    An FTA with Japan would have a very positive impact for NZ agriculture with current tariffs of around 14% then added consumption tax of 8%. As far as my business goes, we export around $300k p/a directly to Japan and there are no tariffs. These negations will l hopefully go some way to correcting the trade imbalance the Japanese have enjoyed since the late 1980’s.

        Kimbo, a practical reason for not adopting foreign diacritical marks into English is that characters with these various marks don’t appear on English-language keyboards.
        
        Each time you want to use one you have to look up “special characters” or enter a code.
        
        If English were to use diacritical marks for the other languages it would be tiresome, time consuming, and sometimes impossible. Or, of course, someone might market a special politically correct keyboard with about eight rows of alphabet letters rather than three rows.

A maori bloke was explaining about the wildlife using Maori names of, I presume native birds, but it could have been anything as he failed to repeat the name in English. While I guess he expects all NZ’ers to know all the maori names of our wildlife (complete fail with us), the programme is hosted by a Scottish TV presenter and presumably to be shown in Scotland and the UK. ?

      My understanding, itstricky, is that it’s a diacritical mark used in the Maori alphabet to show that the vowel it is above should not be formed into a dipthong with the immediately following vowel.
      
      The macron comes from marks used in the ancient classical European languages and had significance in poetic pronunciation. It is used in languages other than Maori for various purposes, for example, in Arabic and the languages of what used to be Yugoslavia.
      
      The macron is used in a number of Polynesian languages apart from Maori. That is, in their written forms, which were created after colonisation.
      
      I know the macron is sometimes and optionally used by young or less confident writers in cursive Russian to distinguish the Cyrillic version of “m” from the Cyrillic “t”.
      
      The macron is not used in modern English.

it is notable that the word “black” only appears twice in the entire, lengthy article.
1st time: “She sat in a gold-hued car with tinted black windows as her…”
2nd time: “…wearing a pink and white onesie under a black sweatsuit.”

The only mention of ” African-American” is in the sentence: “Baltimore has long struggled with violence and a strained relationship between its police force and many African-American residents.” (There is no mention of the cause of the “violence and a strained relationship.”) The implication is that the police are part of the problem.

The word “men” does not appear in the article.
“Violence” appears to be the culprit. What Baltimore needs, I guess, is a government-funded “War on Violence.” There. That ought to do it!

Oh dear again. Little’s attempt to attack National on housing has backfired:

Labour leader Andrew Little used his first house to highlight how housing had become unaffordable under the National-led Government.

However, analysis shows the value of his “starter home” in Wellington rose at a greater rate under a Labour Government than under National.

In his speech at Labour’s Congress on Sunday, Little said house prices were “out of control” and getting further and further out of reach for Kiwi families.

He spoke about he and his wife Leigh’s first home, a two-storey property in Brooklyn which cost $315,000.

“That wasn’t a small amount of money for us, but it was manageable. It got us a three-bedroom starter home, built on a hillside in Wellington.”

“Now, it would cost around $830,000. It’s gone up by half a million dollars in 17 years.

All good so far. We all know house prices have risen over the last few years. But here comes the kicker:

According to estimates about the Brooklyn property’s value by research firm CoreLogic, it is now worth around $845,000 – even more than Little suggested.

CoreLogic’s estimates also show that the property’s value rose at a greater rate under Labour than under National.

Under Labour, it rose by $255,000, or 81 per cent. Since 2008, when National came to power, it has risen by 48 per cent, or $273,000.

That’s a massive own goal for Little. His party’s election-year Congress, when the troops come together to get rallied before hitting the stump, and Little’s attack on the Government blows up in his face. Bugger.

I knew house prices rose a lot under Labour, but almost twice as much as they have under the current government? That really does undermine Labour’s claims of a “housing crisis” under John Key and Bill English’s watch.

Instead of getting acting coaching, perhaps Andrew Little needs to focus on getting his facts right, or there will surely be another Show Me the Money moment in his future.

    But since affordability is based on the percentage increase, then using the percent is correct.
    perhaps he should have clarified his comments better.

It maybe possible that the SMB v1 vulnerability could be exploited directly by a remote computer, but very few people would normally allow the relevant ports to be open to the Internet, and especially in major corporate systems secured by reputable firewalls. Those ports are normally always blocked by default.
  
  It still seems likely that phishing emails were used with either clickable links or attachments.
  
  The major difference with wcrypt is that it contains a worm function as well as the encryption exploit. that is, once it gets onto one machine within an organization, it specifically searches for other vulnerable machines and infects them. Previous ransomware typically used the one machine and encrypted local and networked files but left other machines alone. That model was easier to block and clean up after; wcrypt may require almost all PCs in an organization to be reinstalled.

The TCP 445 vector will only work for devices that are on the same local area network, or between networks that permit transport of TCP 445. There has to have been another method for the initial delivery to at least one PC on the inside and spearphishing is the most likely way that occurred.

    It’s the same for almost any band – on their first album they put all the songs they’ve spent their life up-till-now writing. For the second album they’ve got six months or a year to come up with something new and they just can’t do it – unless they’ve got real talent. I mean, everyone has probably got at least one good song in them. If you don’t know the mechanics of composing a good tune then you’re in trouble, really.

    Most shooters would probably go along with you. Come opening weekend there seems to be a mass movement from rivers & ponds to urban parks & lakes.
    
    The biggest factor although is the weather. If there’s a good Southerly or a howling Norwester on opening weekend conditions favour the hunters rather than the ducks.

        Most hunters eat what they kill GoVege & duck shooters aren’t much different. Usually any surplus is given away to friends & family.
        
        Your side kick would likely not recognise the flavour of Chinese cooked duck compared with its wild counterpart. Domestic duck tends to be fairly fatty & bland. Wild duck is strong in taste.
        
        I can’t be bothered nowadays. My son & his mates shoot the three dams I own & they always drop us off a couple. Like Bluff oysters, crayfish, paua & wild pork so long as I get one good feed of each year I’m a happy camper.
