I went to an interesting talk by two visiting visiting UK experts Baroness Ilora Finlay and Robert Preston hosted by the Maxim Institute.

David Seymour’s bill is not as simple as he claims. This issue should be decided by a binding referendum.

    …because it is “no longer appropriate for modern society”. Instead, he acted like a ~~true democrat~~ weather vane, and polled his constituents to decide the matter for him
    
    ….except when it was a matter which Wayne Mapp considered should be left to his judgement, rather than the majority of those he was representing. In other words, when it suited and when Wayne considered the matter sufficiently serious and the “tyranny of the 51%” did not take into account the complexity and consequences, Burke’s dictum did apply! Correct, Wayne. That’s what you were elected to do, exercise your judgement, not just conduct continual straw polls, and regurgitate the results like a calculator! If not, let’s sack the 120 MPs at present and replace ’em with an adding machine linked to a yes/no push button calculator in every home!

  I’m no great fan of referendums. We elect leaders to make decisions on our behalf and it’s their responsibility to do the research, listen to the various points of view and make a considered judgement on the issue.
  An MP’s unwavering adherance to an ideology can complicate the situation.

      Irrespective of the matter of euthanasia or any issue for that matter, be it ideological, religious or practical, Springbok tours, abortion or fluoride in water, that’s what Seymour is there for as per the collective decision of the good people of Epsom- to bring his judgement, warts and all. And to be held to account for it every 3 years.
      
      So kindly stop trying to disenfranchise the voters of Epsom. Because that’s the privilege voters have every election, and even more than the personalities and policies, the question they should ask of themselves before they cast their votes for both electorate and party (list) – “will this person represent me/us well with the decisions they make?”

        Meh. Typical light-weight response from you and your manipulative Messiah, Winston Peters. All parties and groups, in one sense or another can be described as “ideological”. “Ideology” is a pejorative that voters and politicians throw around when they don’t get their way, and instead their political opponents are winning, or at least trying to set the agenda…which, surprise, surprise, is what politicians and pressure-groups do.
        
        But yes, as ACT is a party that is built on neo-lib principles, including the freedom of the individual, it makes sense and in accordance with his world-view and (if you want to label it that) ideology, that Seymour would sponsor such a bill. Again, something that the voters of Epsom should have taken into account, and which they will do so again on 23 September. So, yet again, kindly stop trying to circumvent representative democracy by disenfranchising their collective decision.

        Yep. No matter how you cut and dice the euthanasia issue, it is ideological. One point of view is built on ideologies that value “protecting individual autonomy” and “reducing unnecessary pain and suffering” above all others. So those ideological values should trump warnings about a “slippery slope” and “the preservation human life” (be it from a religious motivation or not). But I’m sure the perpetually boring and arrogant shunda barunda will be along soon to warble on about how that is not the case it is all an ideological set-up by the neo-marxists or whatever, but he is not an ideologue like his opponents!
        
        Put it this way – I know that, no matter what arguments and facts are presented, it is almost impossible that faithful Roman Catholics and conservative Protestants would ever support Seymour’s bill, or any other euthanasia/assisted dying alternatives. Which makes them…ideological. Doesn’t make them right or wrong as such, just as an accusation that Seymour is ideological does not negate the supposed merits of his bill as such,
        
        …although it is disingenuous if they participate in supposedly “public” debates and accuse others of being ideologues…
        
        In 2011, we we had the choice to ditch MMP, I thought long and hard about voting against it. An incentive was that, in all likelihood, it would sink the Greens as a political force capable of winning seats in Parliament under FPP. But in the end I decided, as much as I hold the Greens in contempt, and consider those who vote for them naive fools, nonetheless, they deserve a reasonable chance to have their viewpoint, values and ideology represented.
        
        Same with the people of Epsom. If some are experiencing buyer’s remorse, then they will get the chance to address it on September 23.

      Every MP in the Parliament is free to introduce legislation Chuck, and much of it is ideological.
      
      Seymour’s Bill will be decided by a conscience vote, as it properly should be. It may or may not pass first reading. But Seymour has an absolute right to propose and sponsor it, even if you do not agree with him.

        KS, I understand how things work. We used to have FPP. We do not now. The change could have been done by politicians. However, it was done by a referendum. This is more democratic.
        
        NZF policy is for matters that are done by a conscience vote now be done by a binding referenda. Under FPP their was some rational for MPs making conscience votes. Those who voted against the wishes of their electorate risked losing their seat. This depended on how secure their seat was.
        
        Under MMP half the MPs do not have that concern.
        
        I think this is a good argument for a change in the system.

        @Gruffydd, I would not be so certain. I heard the expert speakers one of whom was a doctor very experienced in caring for the dying, Baroness Ilora Finlay.
        
        If the matter passes a third reading and then went to a referendum there would be a good time for public education from both sides of the debate and also an opportunity for public debate.
        
        I believe this debate could swing the current polling. I of course could be wrong. If Seymour’s bill is not changed to put in a lot more safeguards for a start it would make it more likely to fail.

        Chuck, irrespective of what disagreements we have had and will almost certainly have in future, and while I do not agree with NZF policy on the matter (including the problem of rightly deciding what should be a conscience matter – currently individual caucuses decide)

    I also had in mind religious ideology whereby adherents will often let others do their thinking for them.
    
    I once read a biography of Robert Oppenheimer who was very sympathetic to the American Communist Party around the time of the depression because of their work with the downtrodden. Although he donated freely to the party he never became a member because it meant signing up to the rest of their ideology, no questions asked & there was plenty he was uneasy with.

  The other problem with “binding referendums for serious and consequential issues” is…who decides what is serious and consequential?!
  
  Have a look at the cranks, weirdos and gullible shills for the populists (Chuck Bird counts as at least one of those three) who cry out for binding referendums…and you soon become aware that it is an exercise in public opinion manipulation from start to finish. Which begs the question, if you are wanting a “quality” decision, why put it out in the domain where the vote of someone who has seriously considered and weighed the issue is equal to that of a half-wit, who will respond to the appropriate vacuous stimuli like a pea-brained pigeon?! Including the stimuli of political hucksters and snake oil salesmen who promise “true democracy” can only be had via “binding referendum”.
  
  But to clarify, I don’t think Chuck Bird has the intelligence of a pea-brained pigeon. He’s a bit smarter…

      Not so. I reserve that treatment for those whom I consider deserve it – in particular you, Chuck Bird and Shunda barunda.
      
      For example, Chuck deserves it today because he has shilled, yet again, for Winston Peters. He’s also a loathsome man who thinks that because Helen Clark hasn’t sued over allegations about her husband, or that John Banks has refused to take a paternity test, both allegations must be true. People like that who frequent Kiwiblog deserve smack downs on sight, and continual reminders so others can be warned and reminded what they are dealing with.
      
      You deserve it because, as I explained the other day on the decriminalising cannabis thread, you are a nasty misanthrope who lacks the guts to stick around and debate your point, and you presume bad faith on the part of others.
      
      Shaunda barunda deserves it because, having called me out for supposedly supporting terrorism, he has repeatedly failed to answer a reciprocating question back at him asking him to compare the likes of the PLO with Nelson Mandela, and he accuses others of being ideologues yet tells others to “piss off” when he is called out for it. Both of which I can tolerate, but when he accuses the likes of Kiwiblog’s finest gentleman, SGA, of being an ideologue too, receives clarification from SGA that is not the case, yet still does not retract
      
      …then he deserves to be named and shamed. Like you when you show presumptuous contempt for the values of others, yet expect special treatment and respect for the Roman Catholic church.

  Maxim Institute seems to have zilch impact on how people think. Its views are too conservative and right leaning for many people. I have never heard of its ‘Danielle van Dalen’. Google ‘van Dalen’ and Danielle turns up on the third results page.
  Granted there are risks with allowing euthanasia but in a democratic society such as ours they are quite manageable.

    I’m not as sanguine about the risks being “quite manageable”. but nonetheless, and as per Gruffydd’s comments above about ideological assumptions and underpinnings being disclosed, it is interesting that the Maxim institute doesn’t seem to put its cards out on the table:

    So no disclosure it is a conservative Christian organisation, that also advocates for neo-lib economic policies. Good luck to ’em, but it is disingenuous to omit any mention of the religious motivation, and cover it with “At the core of our work is an understanding that it is ideas that will shape society over time”.
    
    I know a guy like Sir John Graham is a class act, and he puts his cards on the table, although he wont shove it down anyone’s throat nor argue the merits of his case from a religious premise. I would have expected Maxim to have a least acknowledged it in their “about us” statement.
    
    I also know the Maxim Institute had plenty of folks in a church I belonged to some 15 years ago shilling for them. Became a turn-off, just as any Anglican vicar warbling on about a left-wing policy such as the “living wage” is. No matter who you are, bugger off, and don’t try and tell your parishoners how to vote. I’m capable of considering the issues of macro-economic policy and the ministry of Christ myself, thanks very much.

    Peter, one of the main issues is whether the risks can be manageable. For a start I wonder how many of the MPs have any idea of how long many people diagnosed with six months to live have actually lived.

        So if the experts say it…and you believe it…that means you back yourself to have the necessary expertise to sort the wheat from the ideological chaff…such as taking into account that the “experts” you are listening to are, in all likelihood just as ideological as David Seymour. Ooops! Never thought of that, did you? 😉
        
        No, it is impossible for MPs to be experts in everything they encounter and on which they must decide. But at least the good ones become attuned to and recognise when they are lobbied by pressure groups and seeing it for what it usually is – ideologically slanted. Doesn’t make the Maxim Institute right nor wrong, but for you to be listening to their “experts” and warning us that David Seymour has an “unwavering adherence to an ideology” demonstrates your naivety. Hence Winston Peters is your Messiah.
        
        Question, Chuck – if the average MP is not an “expert” how does throwing the question open over 3 million non-expert voters in the form of a referendum solve the problem?!

So the Council spent $100000 to rename the old highway. By dividing it into seven roads. And naming six of those after Maori ancestors. And NZTA paid for it.

Now in what world is this even remotely OK?

EDIT and I can guarantee that 99% of the people here will simply call all 7 roads the `old highway `.

    There is a potential serious unintended consequence. Phoning for emergency services. The operator will only have the official street names. So some poor guy in Waikanae will need to know his mum is having a heart attack on Matene Te Whiwhi Road AND be able to pronounce that to the operator under stress. Good luck with that.

    The names are unpronounceable as well. The local Mayor, of Indian extraction, had a brainwave that all his elderly moderately rich charges should learn Maori speak. This is very way and community in which that will be denigrated.

Good to see Labour’s moving away from Brand Clark with its latest employment relations policy proposals – under Aunty Helen, Labour’d inevitably slap “Kiwi” in front of any attempt to give the kiss of life to failed 70s agenda (nationalised transport, nationalised energy, nationalised banking, compulsory retirement savings)… So “Fair” is a step in a different direction – can’t wait for their justice policy – presumably it’ll be branded “Fair Cop”

You couldnt make this up. Peter Thiel was given residence in 2006 by Lie-bour Government. Subsequently he got a New Zealand Passport in 2011. In the period of permanent residency,granted by Lie-bour he helped turn a small company called XERO into a huge Two Billion dollar company,so far so good.
Then out of the woodwork came a Lie-bour Party wee boy name of Lees-Galloway objecting to Mr Thiel and his NZ Passport.
Enter the defacto trade union installed Lie-bour Party Leader known as Angry Andy Little. Little has taken umbrage,wants to know why a person like Peter Thiel who it is alleged only spent 12 days in NZ to get his passport.
The real story is Thiel helped create massive employment,for NZs and many many millions of dollars to boost NZ economy. With the attack by Angry Andy Little,and his joined at the hip Lie-bour /Green Party on winners like Peter Thiel,seems should his pack of losers win the election in September,he and his trade union puppet masters will wreck NZs very strong economy. Thiel has done more for our economy in his alleged 12 days ,than Little and his gang, and him on his $1000 a day for doing nothing, could do in two life times. Seems Little represents the do nothings ,and puts the boot into positive economy creators and winners.

  So in essence LabourGreen Party’s whinge (and now Winnie First too, climbing on the MSM bandwagon) about Thiel being granted residency is that he was only here for 12 days?
  
  But as the Minister responsible at the time (Nathan Guy) said yesterday Thiel was granted residency in essence because he was exceptional (eg in terms of is multi-million dollar investments etc).
  
  So two things:
  
  Firstly, some people (eg Labour/Greens/NZFirst/MSM) seem to conveniently forget about NZ’s economic situation at that time (late 2000’s/early 2010’s) which was in a scary place post GFC, ChCh earthquakes, and projected decades of deficits etc. To have someone like Thiel come in and invest massively and have confidence in NZ (and its government’s management of the economy) cannot be understated (as the LabourGreensNZFirst Party look back at the time period through the lens of 2016/2017 and when the NZ economy now is so much “better”).
  
  Secondly seems the LabourGreensNZFirst Party also have their usual issue with perceived “white rich pricks”. So according to the Left it’s ok to have say the likes of (economically non-contributing) refugees being granted permanent residency, and other ethnicities from around this wider region …. but not someone with a bit a money that is contributing positively to the NZ economy?
  
  Plus anyway I thought it was the Government’s prerogative, so if Helen Clark’s Labour wanted to granted residency to refugees that were rescued by the Tampa, why does that stop National granting residency to someone they believe will benefit the country.
  
  Actually thirdly, I’m really sick of all this double-standard, whinging, negative, denigrating “gotcha type dirty politics” from the likes of Labour and the Greens. If the LabourGreen Party can’t articulate a positive vision for this country and instead continues to resort to the above, all I am going to say in response is:

So you increase the minimum wage that increases the average wage. This means you must increase the minimum wage……… before long the minimum wage will be $1,000 hour. Does this man think before he opens his mouth.
Its the same logic they used for deciding what people are in poverty.

  In the interest of fairness I submitted myself to watch Anderson Cooper on CNN yesterday. 90% of the show was negative stories about Trump. For once they didn’t lead with Trump and Russia. No they lead with Trump doing another heinous thing. Apparently he hosted a fundraiser at his hotel and didn’t allow the media in!!

    Believe me, many other cultures leave their babies all over the place, including cars, floors.
    I nearly trod on one once.
    You can’t convince them that the only safe place for a baby is in its cot, because then they’ll point out all the cot deaths.
    Also, they often have toddlers getting lost because of some mix-up over who is supposed to be looking after them.
    This family did not abuse the baby..they just got stoned and were temporarily incapable of caring for it.
    Probably hundreds of near-misses occur every year.
    Christianity doesn’t help either.
    “God will look after us”, “it’s God’s will”, “they’re angels now”, and best of all, “every child is a gift from God”.
    They will just think God chose to call this one back early.

        ‘Local councils across New Zealand approved 7 per cent more residential building consents in May, with house consents at a 13-year high as the trend for new dwellings continues to increase.’
        ‘Today’s figures show 10,379 homes were consented in the year through May, up 10 per cent from the previous year. However, the trend is showing signs of decreasing in Auckland, Stats NZ said.
        Including alterations, $1.8 billion of building work was consented in May. That included $1.3 billion worth of residential buildings and $605 million for non-residential buildings.
        On an annual basis, the value of consents rose 12 per cent to $19.3 billion. Residential consents increased 12 per cent to $12.8 billion while non-residential consents advanced 11 per cent to $6.5 billion.’

        Effective Saturday, July 1, 2017, New Zealand’s largest home loan lender is raising its one year fixed mortgage rate.
        
        Their one year ‘special’ will rise by +6 bps to 4.55%.
        
        It’s standard one year fixed rate will rise by the same amount to 5.05%.
        
        ANZ’s ‘specials’ are available to customers with at least 20% equity, an ANZ transactional account with salary direct credited, plus any ANZ credit card or insurance. ‘Specials’ are not available with any package discount plans.
        
        At the same time, Kiwibank has advised that it will be decreasing its one year ‘special’ rate by -24 bps to 4.45%.
        
        This Kiwibank move will be effective on Monday, July 3, 2017.

The company is building 36 ‘affordable’ homes on sites in Papakura and Pukekohe as part of the Special Housing Area legislation, however they are becoming increasingly difficult to sell, O’Meeghan says.
Loan-to-value ratios (LVRs) put in place last September by the Reserve Bank and the Responsible Lending Code put in place in 2015 have had big impacts, Tatterson says.

Banks are permitted to make no more than 10 per cent of their residential owner occupier mortgage lending to borrowers with less than 20 per cent deposit and “many who may have qualified are missing out”.

It is “especially hard” for first-home buyers who are just over the income salary caps, she says.

Recent data from property information and analytics provider CoreLogic shows in Auckland, investors are 43 per cent of the market while first-home buyers are just above 20 per cent.

The firm’s head of research Jonno Ingerson says the number of sales to first-home buyers was the lowest in 20 years.
