Some good comments yesterday on the execrable welfare cheat Metiria Turei. More posts than a Bain thread, 350+.

Boy she got an easy ride with Espiner though. I reckon RNZ were all up in that shit prior to. Paula Bennett’s interview was clearly a trap, but kudos for doing it.

However, Bryce Edwards reckons ‘rebel’ Turei will be a hero to many, in fact, he went as far as to say she will be a martyr for the ‘cause’.

I disagree. I reckon it’s the Left’s Don Brash / brethren moment.

God knows we’ve all got skeletons in the closet, but foolishly Turei tried to turn it into an attack on what is still one of the most generous welfare systems in the world, and the kiwi sense of fair play will not tolerate it. Plus, it’s so nice to feel pious.

Now, the main question is: did Turei come clean because:
A: She wanted to add heft to her party’s policy announcement and just wanted to come clean after keeping schtum for… 25 years… or
B: She knew it was going to come out.

If it’s B, not only is Turei dog tucker, but so are the Greens. And Labour, by association.

  No, disagree. You are thinking with an MMP and/or major party mindset. Like Peters, Turei is after her slice of the electoral demographic – and let’s face it, other than Labour (unofficially) no one else is chasing the vote (including urban liberals) who think our benefit system is not generous-enough.
  
  Also, both Peters and Turei have a Plan B – the Labour vote implodes as National’s did in 2002, and they are the beneficiaries as Peters and Dunne were that year. For Peters, who should be expecting well over 15% of the vote this year (he’ll be aiming for 20%) irrespective of whether he plunders Labour or National, it means an almost certain seat in government. For Turei? One step closer in the Greens long-game to kill off Labour as the major party on the left.

    I doubt if the beneficiaries are a significant voting bloc. There’s probably not a huge number of them for a starter and few would be National voters. I would say as an unscientific guess that they would not see much point in voting anyway.
    Furthermore for every potential yes vote with big benefit increase promises there’s likely to be multiple no votes.

      Sorry, apologies – I didn’t mean the beneficiary vote. I meant Peters and Dunne were the beneficiaries of the collapsed National vote in 2002, just as the Greens and NZ First will be the major beneficiaries if Labour’s vote collapses similarly this year.
      
      But it is not just beneficiaries who may be sympathetic to Turei’s policy. As I said, there are a number of urban liberals and hard-core radical left wingers for whom the policy will resonate. If they lift the Green vote just a few percentage points, then mission accomplished for Turei. Either way, I doubt Green and National voters cross over much. I sure hope not!
      
      And beneficiaries don’t vote compared to others? Yes, probably right, but then Turei just gave ’em a huge incentive! So if they can harvest that relatively unreaped field, all the better. Is smart MMP politics, at least by a party that is not one of the big two.

  The MSM need to ask Turei to come clean as to whether she has previously broken the law or undertaken any other fraudulent activities etc.
  
  After all the cat is out of the bag so to speak (and of her own volunteering), so these would be fair questions to ask her now.
  
  If she was prepared to undertake fraud previously (what for a number of years was it?), then that is an insight into her character and morality – so it may not be the only occasion?

    I believe Turei is a lawyer. According to Christine Rankin, she would have signed some declaration before being accepted to the profession. I am no lawyer, but surely this should have something about criminal history and if so she is also guilty of making a false statement here. Any lawyers care to inform us?

      This was the case when she was a practicing lawyer. When she applied for, and each year she renewed, her practising certificate she would have made a declaration that she was “git and proper”. She doesn’t have a conviction for welfare fraud nor was she ever charged. She is probably ok.
      
      If not, the Law Society is dominated by feminists these days so there are unlikely to be consequences. She will probably be celebrated for being a hero, diversity, social justice blah blah.

    Regarding Peters (and Bryce Edwards), NZF can be as populist as they want (and get people indignantly agreeing with them), but at the end of the day what matters the most to NZ’ers is the economy!
    
    Now we know NZF is pretty-much centre-left/left when it comes to economic matters (and has no problem bribing/fleecing the taxpayer to pay for “free” this and “free” that, nor has no problem in spending up large on the likes of questionable new rail infrastructure, nor has much faith with growing the economy via FTA’s etc), but the economy and competent economic management is the key here and NZF (+ LabGreens) is yet to demonstrate they have any actual abilities in this regard, which will become more apparent as thoughts turn to such matters during the election campaign time. Our indigenous wide mouthed frog is no different, she only thinks she is a different class of person with a particular occupation, so, is benefit fraud different?

The results are in : In two days over 13-14 July just under 900 cars were set ablaze by urban rioters in Paris’ predominantly immigrant suburbs.

I have a close relative who lives in a suburb that adjoins one of the trouble spots,and she said this year was the worst by far, but noted the violence has been steadily increasing with each passing year.

  During WW2 people still had hope and talked of what they would do when the war was over and they could rebuild and get back to their normal lives.

        Meh. Colonisation and/or Migration have been around longer than the Protestant Ulster plantings of the 17th Century, or when Irish Catholics started washing up in Glasgow, Liverpool, New York and Boston from the 1850s on.
        
        Plus, as I can recall the French state insisting that French Polynesia in general, and Mururoa Atoll in particular were part of France when they decided to conduct nuclear tests there, I can but conclude, by the French’s own declaration, that your definition of whom is French and how to identify them is too narrow. When it suited France they used Muslim troops to resist those Germans, so that seems a good down payment on current citizenship. Oui? 😉

  Private charities with a limited pot of money and complete discretion on how they spend it are motivated to distinguish between bludgers and people in genuine need who are doing their best.
  
  A legal entitlement to welfare backed by an unlimited source of funds is quite different and leads to children being treated as a revenue stream and the consequences we are now seeing.

    Probably explains why Iwi money isn’t invested in tribe housing on Maori land. They know it would be a poor investment – rent would go unpaid, meth contamination would be rife, damage would be eye wateringly expensive to fix, and after 10 years there would be nothing left of the funds sunk into their welfare cause.     Turei has had 25 years (?) to ‘confess’ to her fraud but has stayed shush all these years until, so I hear, someone threatened to blow the whistle on her.
    
    And now she says she will repay the state ‘if’ WINZ demand she does.
    
    Ever heard of a conscience, Metiria? Why not an ‘I have no idea how much I defrauded my countrymen by – but I’m on a good whack these days and have today sent IRD a cheque for $25,000 which is way more than I probably cheated the system by but which includes a self-imposed penal element’?
    
    More and more, if we are going to keep the List system, the Public need to have the opportunity to downtick individual members of that List.

        Helen Clark didn’t resign when she admitted she inhaled, and neither did Marilyn Waring that day she trespassed on the field at Rugby Park, Hamilton in 1981.
        
        All attempts to prosecute or target Turei will achieve is free publicity and making her look like a martyr among the constituency she is seeking to galvanise. Plus she will spin it by comparing the iron boot of the law crushing beneficiaries over a few dollars compared to multinationals avoiding tax.
        
        She was never after the vote of Kiwibloggers, let alone their sympathy or acceptance. Instead, she welcomes the free publicity.

        Um, Parliamentarians are allowed to advocate for a change of law. Indeed, that is what an election campaign is about! Plenty round here think David Seymour’s death with dignity is a form of murder so does that make him of subverting the law by implying euthanasia is moral and right?
        
        And as Turei is relaying events that occurred before she became an MP, it is no different from an MP advocating drug decriminalisation and mentioning they once took drugs. She’s spun it as “I don’t want anyone to be placed in the situation I was with the bad choice I had”.
        
        Be outraged if you want, and make your decision on her morality and have contempt for her if you wish, and demand she pay the funds back…but no, she shouldn’t have to resign. Not IMHO, no matter how much I loathe her politics and smarmy hypocrisy. Only one benefiting from the outrage are right-wing blogs..and Turei. Instead, let the voters decide. It’s traditionally only the left that wants to shut people up or exclude them. Let Turei receive her verdict in the court of public opinion. That’s where the rightful decision belongs.
        
        But yeah, paying back the dosh is fair…

        Plus as long as Turei is still there leading the Greens, it may galvanise the prevaricating conservative base as well who are considering voting for NZ First – only a vote for National guarantees you’ve done everything possible to keep this ghastly policy and its advocate out of government. You want her replaced by someone photogenic and who can project “reasonable” like Julie Ann Genter?! No thanks – give me the Greens radical, pitching to the margins, modelling and/or excusing illegal activity when it suits their purposes, and middle NZ will run a mile.

I don’t know whether Turei was going to be outed, but she has compounded her problems by saying she will pay it back if she is investigated, leaving the clear impression she really doesn’t care; that it was a ”needs must” situation and she had no option but to lie. She has shown the nation she has no respect for the law – something she seeks to administer – and has loaded the gun (and the magazine) for her opponents. She won’t be fined or forced to pay $57k, and the Taxpayer Union “invoicing” is an even dumber stunt that hers because it gives her free publicity.

Two votes, party and electorate, just like non-Maori or Maori who choose to go on the general roll for a start (Harawira’s compulsory enrolment in Maori seats and entrenchment is crap, btw). Usually if you want to access benefits from your iwi – just as beneficiaries of any charity or incorporated society – you have to prove your whakapapa.
        
        But then in the current over-excited climate, with an election approaching, and where for some reason a system that has existed since 1867 is suddenly of major importance, indeed, it will allegedly determine our fate as a nation, I think your dial is set to “outrage” rather than “dispassionate analysis”. Keep an eye on this case in the High Court at Auckland; Gustav Otto Sanft shot his daughter in the head from a metre away with a sawn-off shotgun, killing her instantly.

Here’s a couple of excerpts which may cause you to wonder why he is only on trial for manslaughter and not murder:

During crown prosecutor Katie Hogan’s opening address today, she said: “There is no evidence that the gun fired accidentally.”

The day before Amokoura died Sanft’s elder children were clearing out a hot water cupboard at the house when they found a sawn-off shotgun wrapped in a purple sheet, Hogan said.

Sanft did not have a secure gun safe at the home nor a firearms licence, she said.

What reason is there for a law-abiding citizen to keep a sawn-off shotgun concealed in their home? I can think of no legitimate reason.

But it wasn’t Sanft’s fault, according to his lawyer:

Defence counsel Phil Hamlin said in his opening address that the gun had fired accidentally.

“He caused the death of his child, the own flesh and blood of his daughter, but it was an accident,” he said.

“The shotgun fired accidentally without having to have pulled the trigger.”

He said Sanft did not believe the gun was loaded and did not “point the gun at her or at her head”.

He said Sanft never used the weapon “in any anger, annoyance, frustration” as the Crown alleges.

“Tragically his daughter was killed instantly,” he said, but added the gun was faulty and “unsafe”.

“Mr Sanft does not get the blame for the killing of his daughter, the gun does.

“He didn’t realise it has these unsafe features.”

Any modified firearm is inherently unsafe, but a sawn-off shotgun even moreso. But guns don’t kill people; the people who loaded the ammunition into them, pointed the gun at a target, and pulled the trigger are the real killers.

  1. Always assume that a weapon is loaded.
  2. Never point a weapon at anyone or anything unless you intend to use it.
  
  Basic.
  
  The real questions must be asked as to who owned the weapon, and why was the weapon modified in such a manner. If Mr Sanft is in any way associated with the ownership and modification of the weapon, then he is criminally liable. It is tragic that the one who has paid the price for this is a 2 year old girl.

  My understanding is that a sawn off shotgun is primarily used for nefarious activities. (Like robbing banks).
  
  So he has a sawnoff shotgun, no gunsafe, loaded, and easily accessible to children. And he pointed it at his own daughter. Outstanding example of a safety conscious, law abiding, gun owner.
  
  Obviously a case of a tragic mistake. Case dismissed.
  
  In two years of military training I never personally encountered a single case of accidental discharge. Most discharges that were reported occurred when loaded weapons were dropped, impacted on the floor of a moving vehicle or when the trigger was squeezed. Guns don’t ” just go off”.

    Agreed. It is not even called an ‘accidental discharge’. It is referred to as a UD, or Unintentional Discharge. Any weapon involved in a UD is immediately quarantined and is inspected by a qualified maintainer to determine if there is a fault in the weapon. If no fault is found (and it never is), then the serviceperson in possession of that weapon at the time is charged with an offence, and is prosecuted under military law.
    
    The fines are normally huge!

  A sawn off shotty is no more or less dangerous than a full length one. Its just easy to conceal and carry into say a bank.
  This guy is probably dealing and needed it for debt collection, if he wanted it for protection it wouldnt have been hidden away.
  Anything below 30 inches is illegal and the fact he didn’t have a safe or license is pointless if its an illegal gun.
  So, he gets tried for manslaughter and hopefully gets shanked in jail for killing a kid. Or hangs himself.

The obvious name for those gaining temporary, unpaid experience with these corporations is “Interns”, but the term has strangely been dropped.

    My best work experience was as a paper boy both selling and delivering. I believe I started at only 9.
    Work was plentiful for youth. Wellington Hospital paid me to work in the X-Ray Dept darkroom for one Xmas hols season about 13-14. Child labour? No. I was well paid and the family benefited.
    The only time I felt exploited I organised a strike of paper boys aged 11.

I gather from the RNZ News that a hospital in the north island is in crisis because a fire destroyed their computer.
What sort of incompetant bums do not have a back-up in a separate room.
As private individual I have back-up on a second hard drive but for an essential service provider it is quite unbelievable not to have this.

    That’s not necessarily sufficient either. Mirroring files may just mean that they are destroyed too.
    
    My solution is a bit brute force but with client work I have to to be able to continue and speedily. I make a mirror image of the whole C:\ drive after all significant work. The Macrium program is free for many and works well.
    A separate hard drive drive is essential and it needs to be physically detached when not in use. The attachable USB drives are very useful and Macrium can find them on its boot and restore application.

      A serious organization will have several levels of backup, plus also a plan to restore on alternative hardware if needed.
      
      The trouble with pure cloud backups is that in the event of a full loss of local data but no facilities loss, restoring can take a very long time for large volumes of data. I backup only about 6 Tb of critical data as a series of VM snapshots and do so locally and also lift stuff off-line to an online repository on a daily basis. The dailies are incremental so not too time consuming. First point of restore is the local storage on a NAS as that would be reasonably fast. A full restore to the same equipment from off-site would take a very long time even over a 200 Mbps link and the off-site storage is in NZ so if needed the data can be quite rapidly copied to one or more portable disks (8 Tb disks exist) and physically brought to the site if needed.
      
      I also have files copied and replicated locally on network on a more frequent basis; and have a replicated DR server available to switch to for any of the key servers; speed might be a little slower but we’d have a functional system to go on with.
      
      Serious organizations have serious Business Continuation plans, and back-ups are merely a part of the whole plan, albeit an important part.

        Using cloud, you only need connection. Fairly easily to make that redundant. That leaves mirroring, “backup” and system availability to the cloud provider, who is much better placed to provide it.

Dubious Buis profession suppression lifted

Our host blogged in May here and here on the extremely dodgy preferential treatment of Dunedin “government employee” Jeremy Buis by the NZ police.

Firstly, there was the appallingly small 200 hrs community service conviction for making the poor victims life hell for a number of years. Then there was the suppression of Buis’ profession to nothing more than “government employee”. Then there was the special treatment of ushering the villain out of a side door to avoid waiting media types.

Evidently, the suppression has been lifted and Buis is a cop. What can we take from this? Well, the law doesn’t apply equally to everyone after all – apparently cops can expect soft sentencing and preferential treatment compared to what the run of the mill guilty party gets.

Marry this up with serious impropriety in systematically victimising a gun-owner up the road in Ashburton and you have to wonder what the hell is the matter with SI police?

  That is one heck of a judicial smacking handed out to Plod and is the type of thing that all concerned citizens should be worried about.

New law will ensure more DPB parents name father

Legislation passed today will further reduce the number of sole parents on the DPB who refuse to name the other parent of their child, Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey said.

The Social Security (Social Assistance) Amendment Bill raises the penalty for sole parents who decline to name the other parent of their child from $22 to $28 a week. The changes, under section 70 A of the Social Security Act, will take effect on 1 July this year.

Steve Maharey says the new rules will strengthen measures in place since last year that have seen a 15.8 per cent drop in the numbers of sole parents who refuse to name the other parent of their child.

“In the 1990s the number of people refusing to name the other parent – usually the fathers – of their child grew by over 40 per cent. This government has reversed this trend and as a result we are seeing fewer people being penalised for not naming the other parent. The changes approved today will ensure this trend continues.”

In addition to the penalties, Work and Income staff have been providing practical information and support to encourage clients to name the liable parent.

“Since 1 July last year, more than 14,000 sole parents have been interviewed by Work and Income staff about their deductions. As a result, nearly 3,200 people have had their deductions removed.

“The changes approved today will not disadvantage beneficiaries who have valid reasons for not naming the other parent of their child. Exemptions from 70 A penalties will remain in place for these people.

“Some people have good reasons for not naming the other parent of their child and Work and Income has processes in place to verify them. These can include an inability to confirm paternity or serious concerns about their family’s safety.

“It’s important to remember that 85 per cent of sole parents on benefit have established paternity and do apply for child support. There’s a fine balance to strike in sanctioning parents without punishing children. I’m confident that the system approved today achieves this balance.”

You’ve got to hand it to Gareth Morgan. There’s nothing subtle about his attempts to purchase votes, with your money and mine:

All New Zealanders between 18 and 23 will be given an obligation-free $200 a week under an Opportunities Party policy announced this afternoon.

The policy would allow young people to “pursue their dreams” and “take stress off … at a pivotal time” in their lives, the party said.

The Opportunities Party (TOP) has previously announced an “unconditional basic income” for over-65s and families with children under 3.

But today it said budget surpluses announced this year would make it possible to extend a basic income to “one of the most needy and neglected groups in society possible”.

Young adults in New Zealand had the highest suicide rate in the OECD and faced intergenerational inequity, the party said in a statement. They also experienced the highest levels of unemployment and faced the greatest challenge getting into the labour market.

“The Youth UBI is designed to give any young person the sort of security they need to learn, search for work, pursue a career or undertake any sort of volunteer or community work without the fear of being penniless.

“They will not be stood down, drug-tested, stigmatised or examined to qualify. The UBI will be theirs as of right from the age of 18 [until] their 23rd birthday.”

TOP said National’s proposed tax cuts, which are worth up to $20 a week, would be scrapped in favour of the UBI.

A Canadian baby has become the first person in the world to not be registered with a sex at birth. Its government ID card states its sex as being U for unknown. It is not a baby boy or a baby girl. It is a raceless, sexless, motherless, fatherless, object. Over the last few years there has been a growing critique of the modeling used to predict catastrophic global warming, including peer reviewed papers, and even one of the pro-global warming scientists involved in the climategate scandal has changed his tune, but none of this has stopped the alarmist brigade from screaming “we are all going to die in a few years is radical action is not taken RIGHT NOW!”

I’m agnostic on the issue global warming. It may well be an issue. But there is no doubt that the science has been politicized and twisted for the purposes of advancing global governance and attacking national sovereignty. And that, not concern for the environment and sustainable conservation, is what the alarmists are really interested in. The Paris Accords scam being a prime example.

Immigration is building to be one of the key elements in the general election campaign. But in Southland Wellington bureaucrats are pushing on with a campaign to make the region welcome refugees and migrants they plan to direct to the region.

Meanwhile, 40 jobs were lost at Mataura recently. That’s quite a big hit in a small population. Obviously the bureaucrats aim to funnel cheap Asian labour into Southland dairy farms, continuing to ignore local youth unemployment.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment and the Immigration Department are pressing on locally with publicity to influence locals to welcome newcomers.

If this isn’t a bureaucracy push right near voting time to influence political views, what is it? The question is: are the bureaucrats trying to boost support for National; OR are they cunningly trying to drive up the NZ First vote in Southland?

How did the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment get such an awkward title? A government department of innovation? Was this satire?

Queensland senator Larissa Waters today announced her resignation from the Senate after discovering she was still a Canadian citizen, having been born in Winnipeg to Australian parents before moving back to Australia as an 11-month-old.

The media mob continues to hound Todd Barclay in his last month of two as an MP – like a posse in an old Western B-movie out to lynch the guy in the black hat.

Barclay is young enough to bounce into another career, provided someone cuts the lynch rope before he throttles.

If the hounding is a sly way of getting at National, it’s useless. National will trot home to win the Southland-Clutha seat at the general election even if they put up a talking Labrador as candidate.

The reporters trot out MPs’ salaries frequently. I can see why the print media journo’s think MPs are well paid, but I’m surprised TV folk seem indignant that an elected MP’s salary should approach that of a TV star.

Electric buses in Wellington . . .
Here’s the thing with the trolleys – and just remember – I drove the old ‘Volvo’ farkers . . .

Oh, they’re so wonderful and enviro friendly say the do-gooders.

They are limited in speed by overhead wire. They are slower than diesels. They cannot pass one another. They can dewire. They can damage overhead causing delays and disruption to every other trolley.
Power cuts – hello ??
The trolleys individually had a high breakdown rate.
They actually cost a shitload – overhead crews, running all the gear, substations.
And even shit like – if you had a lot of them in the same section on the same substation or whatever – you’d get too many trying to use power at once and hello – right foot on floor – we going slowy slowy. Or nowhere.
And they hold up other diesel buses as well as *every other MF on the road*.

One comical day in a dodgy patch for juice – you’d go to pull out into traffic – I was in Riddiford St near hospital – and the power died. Pull back in. Try power – cool, it’s back on. Pull out. Nope – just kidding. Off again. It was just like that – just piss arsing around sometimes – and even at the best of the worst of times – far out.

That’s why most weekends were ‘no trolley’ weekends. Too many problems to bother with them. Fact. I drove plenty of Saturday ‘trolley shifts’ that were ‘diesel replace trolleys’. Maybe two Sat trolley shifts ever ?

They’re dumb because something can go wrong with the overhead – and so of course it can affect every last damned trolley – and leave the whole lot parked on the side of the road. And I saw that happen.

And what’s this crap about ‘dirty diesels’ ? As it stands – Every other bus / truck / vehicle burns fuel so diesels replacing electric on CBD routes is a drop of fuel in the bucket.

They keep making diesels more efficient for less outlay and in the case of Wellington it just keeps making trolleys more and more painful – they actually cost a damned fortune to buy and run.

I’m proud be able to say I drove trolleys in Wellington. The old stock had one thing going for them – great doors that opened with no bullshit – could be perfectly timed to rip apart right as bus stops.
