  The ABs nearly won with 14 men last week – there’s no one in black tonight who is as much of a liability as SBW – so bet the farm on a comfortable win for the Blacks.
  
  To those suggesting the outcome is in doubt – don’t be silly.

Hey why does New Zealand not officially encourage (and accept) more white South Africans that are left there, especially farmers, to emigrate here instead of Vibrants from the Third World and the Middle East?

Technically all white SAFAs should be classed as refugees.

The fact is, their country is f***ed, and there is an excellent chance of being robbed, raped or killed because they are white. Same as a ME Christian fleeing a Moslem shit hole.

I would be happy to take lots of them to satisfy the U.N. and the Greens’ incessant demands. They generally speak English, don’t take shit from losers, work hard, drink piss, eat meat and best of all play rugby. They fit in.

  Hmm, duggledog, implicit in your comment is a whiff of you liking pre 1995 South Africa too much. There are very good reasons why NZ does not have an immigration policy based on race. It is all about our nation’s values. And I know from direct experience that that some of the South Africans, especially those who immigrated in the 1990’s, bought their pre 1995 attitudes to race with them. Not good.

      And if it is such, why would it not block those fraudulently claiming Jewish identity/ancestry.
      
      Many nations have this sort of preference – nations being sovereign over their immigration policy. The Irish and Spanish allow people who have ancestry to return to Eire or Spain. The UK allows those with a grandparent born there preferential visa rights and so on.
      
      Sure there are always going to be issues when an identity such as Jewish is involved, as it is in part an ancestry test and in part a religious test – Jewish being an ethnic identity of these two components.
      
      The latter part is why Jews who convert to Christianity and Islam do not qualify as migrants to Israel (those already Israeli citizens do not lose citizenship over this).

        The original idea for the ‘homeland for the jews’- leaving aside the fact it was over 2000 years ago, if we did that for the maori the society islands could be in for a surprise- was that they live alongside those currently living there.

        As you will no doubt be aware, France and Germany are part of the EU and have free movement of labour. Thus while in the EU cannot have such a policy.
        
        In the case of the UK and France (note Eire is different to the UK in the number of Black African, Caribbean, and south Asian residents) there is a legacy of colonial empire (commonwealth) involved (with a legacy of language) – rather than a preference for the return of colonists with UK/French ancestry.

    I see WM has 6 downticks. Why when he speaks the truth? We were shocked by the utter racism of some Sth Africans we rented a flat to. They made no secret of their loathing of anyone not white…sickened me. I have met other Sth Africans with those attitudes too. But, of course, I have met plenty of really fine Sth Africans as well. I think the ones who left Sth Africa in the 1990s were getting out because they resented black rule. The more recent immigrants are leaving because….well I don’t blame them!

      I’ve never met one of these unevolved Saffas, I have met (here and in UK) a lot who fled rising violence and general destruction of civil society created by rise of ANC as a dominant political force. More people were killed in intertribal political fighting 1990-1994 than were killed by the Apartheid administration WWII- 1990 (Not to defend apartheid, but the economy was better and streets safer). South Africa is a failing state with crumbling infrastructure well on it’s way to being the next Zimbabwe. Jaapis come here with a great work ethic and have made a valuable contribution to NZ, particularly in Agriculture.

New Zealand must be one of the few countries that still has a race based voters roll, race based entitlements to to scholarships, race base undertakings around stand downs and suspensions, race based rugby teams, race based access to land; never mind the xenophobia around house ownership and Asian sounding names….     Kimbo, I’m not South African, but I have some sympathy for them as order and the economy slide and crime soars in their native country.
    
    I think white South Africans, as a defeated people, have better claim to being refugees than Pakistanis and Iraqi Arabs and others sneaking into Europe as Syrian refugees, or the “child refugees” in their 20s and 30s who con European countries.
    
    If it weren’t for Western trade sanctions, whites would probably still be running South Africa and what was Southern Rhodesia. We helped break them, so, shouldn’t we hold out the hand to help some off the floor?
    
    Would they make good citizens? Descendants of folk who played rugby like the Springboks of old and who, under Botha, Smuts, de Wet and de la Rey, fought us so resolutely in the 2nd Boer War should make good citizens.
    
    Have we helped defeated enemies before? Yes – many of the Baltic peoples settled in NZ after World War 2 had been Nazi sympathisers, and some of them active in the German war machine.

  They have recognised the cave (tomb of patriarchs) as an international site.
  
  The international site is where it is – in territory set aside by the UN for a Palestinian Arab state, currently under military occupation by the IDF but with civil administration from the PA. Given Israel has made no annexation claim for this territory and has made peace offers in which Hebron is in a Palestinian state – what other identity for the location of the new heritage site – cave of the patriarchs, could be given but Palestine?

  And for Jews and Moslems the issue is not over what territory the cave is said to be located in but control over the site itself.
  
  Throughout history Christians and Moslems and more recently Israeli Jews with military dominance in this area have either excluded those of other faiths or simply ensured their own access to the rage of the would be monopolists.
  
  Making the site an international heritage one might be a necessary step to ensuring access is available to all, regardless of who has territorial control in the area.

  More hysterical screeching of “Judenrein” to try and justify annexation of the West Bank, including a town that has had no effective Jewish settlement for some 2,000 years since the bar Kochba Rebellion in 135AD!
  
  What your post really means is, despite some 800 years of settlement and architecture that justify designation as site of Arab heritage (which undoubtedly exists!), and to satisfy the disruption caused by some 800 unwelcome Zionist zealots building settlements on the alleged justification of some 3,000 year old skeletons, an Arab community of some 20,000 should have their way of life disrupted, including check points and living under lock and key. And they are expected to act “reasonably” and accept that.
  
  So whereas Zionism claims to be secular, and Israel a secular nation, the agenda is to use cynical politics and religious zealots to justify conquest and annexation by stealth and increment. And any objection, any challenge to that is automatically deemed anti-Semitic. What a tawdry cynical policy!
  
  Don’t believe me? Mt Sinai has a heritage in the Jewish faith, yet because it is not located in the West Bank, there was no problem for Israel returning it to Egypt in 1978. And according to the book of Joshua, 2 and a half of the twelve tribes settled on the east bank of the Jordan River – yet Israel makes no claim to that despite its history of Jewish settlement.
  
  Israel’s best hope of peace is that one day sufficient Palestinians, including their leadership decide that “being reasonable” and “acting reasonably” is in their best interests, and in their children’s. In that sense, yes, despite being a cynical bitch at times, Golda Meir was right – we will have peace when the Palestinians love their children more than they hate us”.
  
  But there is a second part to the equation – if the other party is being unreasonable, and you want them to act reasonably…you have to do so yourself. Jewish settlement in Hebron to “protect the tombs of the Patriarchs” is a pretext. It is about justifying the continued and unreasonable peace-killing policy of West Bank settlement. And Netanyahu squealing is just another round in the endless propaganda war by both sides.

    My mum is 75 and she got frisked down by armed guards under the Eiffel Tower about 2 weeks ago, said they were outside the hotel also. Said they didn’t really see any Muslims anywhere but they were on a river cruise and then departed Europe. I see that Gareth Morgan didn’t just want to poach any of the crap MP’s of the Greens he went after the best òf a bad lot by trying to get Julie Ann Venter to switch. As much as I dislike the Greens you have to rate this MP as she does a lot of work on Transport and is really the only Green MP that asks sensible Questions in Parliament.

      Unfortunately many people these days who are expert “transport planners”, and urban planners, are working within an orthodox framework that is flat wrong. They don’t know what they don’t know, and unfortunately “what they don’t know” is as significant as trying to do rocket science without factoring in gravity or knowing anything about it. Genter, I think, is bright enough to be having second thoughts about the orthodoxies (cars bad, public transport good, prescriptive urban planning good, free markets bad, etc) but is too deeply vested in the whole ideological construct to gracefully concede much. But the Greens did support the Twyford RMA amendment that included abolishing urban growth boundaries, which was defeated by National and allies, so maybe sense is percolating through somehow. Shame, shame, shame on National for being the perpetuators of evil here.

  It’s another known fact about the urban planning utopians favourite cities like London and Vancouver, that the “increasing urban density” the planners want, is actually third-world immigrants crowding several families to a room in those cities, not “vibrant urbanism” at all. Meanwhile the locally born who still want a decent home, can’t afford one thanks to the market distortions from things like growth boundaries.
  
  The stated and zoned-for wish for building “up instead of out” never happens, either, because of urban land-market complexities that most economists (who haven’t majored in urban land economics at all) don’t understand, let alone urban planners who know jack about any economics at all in the first place. Ironically the most building “up” taking place in the first world, is happening in cities like Houston that are building “out” flat out; you can have BOTH but you can’t have “up INSTEAD of out”.

I was reading an article this morning where a person was complaining that a new housing development in Wellington had nothing under $600k. She wanted to know where the ‘affordable housing’ was.
Then I remembered reports yesterday that scaffolders can earn $70,000 straight after qualifying, and workers in the construction industry have average earnings of $99,000. While there is no doubt some difference between ‘construction industry’ and ‘builders’, I suspect its probably not much. I’ve heard crane drivers can earn up in this bracket as well.

So clearly there are many ‘poor, underpaid’ workers doing very nicely thank you – earning more than enough to qualify as ‘rich pricks’. With wages like this, how can there possibly be any chance that a standard 3-bedroom house could be built for around $300,000? Or even $500,000?

  All the problem is in the “value” – actually the price, not the value – of the dirt underneath the property.
  
  The $200,000 – $300,000 new houses in US cities Hugh tells us about (and he is not kidding us) are being built on $40,000 – $100,000 sections (and they are not pocket hanky ones either).
  
  The way urban land markets are distorted by growth boundaries ALWAYS results in section prices “expanding” to take up any slack, or even to crowd out the opportunities for income in other parts of the supply chain. This is observable from decades of evidence, to which the urban planning class is impervious.
  
  Enabling tighter and cheaper housing, and screwing labour and construction down, always merely provides land and site vendors with higher price opportunities.

      This is when they are working for someone else. They are not always working for themselves and charging out top dollar. And there is a big difference between emergency repair charge-out rates, and what you can get paid for turning up day after day after day on a construction site. The price of new houses is certainly not because “labour” is over-remunerated. Its all in the dirt underneath, thanks to urban planners shutting off the supply of cheap stuff in alternative uses.

  You save on the land per unit but pays for that in the shortage of skilled labour – it does beg the question as to why there are not more migrants in this area of work (the pay is over the $50,000 required for skilled worker status).
  
  Maybe the same jobs are well paid over in Oz too. And for the same reason, high land values, rising population and building upward.

    Actually there is urban economics literature that should be better known, that states “site values are elastic to allowed density” under certain conditions.
    
    This is why upzonings and “special housing areas” are such a dismal failure. The minute the allowed density is increased, the incumbent site owners adjust their price expectations upwards, and actual developers have to pay the entire premium value up front. Then the chances of the actual developers surviving to put completed units on the market is reduced, not increased. There is some benefit temporarily if some developers are holding sites at the time the rezoning is done, and the previous seller of the land was not anticipating this. But guess what – all the speculators are incentivised to hang on and wait for further upzonings, because that is the current mania and orthodoxy in urban planning, and spineless “once were free market” politicians like the Nats play along with it. (In Pommie-land the Conservatives are more explicitly the crony-capitalist allies of the landed gentry and the Dukes of London and so on).
    
    It is a fact provable from the global evidence, that the smaller the average new house becomes under the planning system, the more expensive it is on average, not the cheaper it is on average. All the truly affordable, median-multiple-3 cities have large average-size new houses and even larger sections.
    
    We are watching this same process playing out in NZ urban property markets and planning processes right now. The Poms have been doing it for decades and haven’t ever learned, and in fact urban planners everywhere else are going “hey, lets copy them”.

  Sometimes however “work ethic” comes down to being available to work seven days a week, and often on a casual on-call or changing shift basis. And with no over-time rates, or out of the traditional weekday hour rates of the old awards.
  
  Which is a major change in working conditions which impacts on the ability to participate in the community (sport etc).

      Sure, which is why the large reduction in people playing team sport on leaving high school, their work hours do not allow them to.
      
      But it is only because employers are allowed to advertise jobs requiring such availability – if they were not, they would advertised weekend work separately. And many students and those looking for the second job (to save for a house or pay down the mortgage before rates increased) would do it instead.

As a young married man I worked evenings and Saturdays in a second job as a watersider first to save the 30% deposit required for a new home and then to maintain the two mortgages (one at 13% and a second at 19%) after we took possession. Wife worked as well and sports were a thing of the past. Such was life in the workers paradise of the Peoples Socialist Republic of Aotearoa under Norman Kirk and Bill Rowling.

        A massive mortgage at a low interest rate in low-inflation times is NOT the same as a modest mortgage with a high interest rate in high-inflation times. The current era of “lucky” first home buyers (a tiny minority compared to those who cannot get into the market at all) will be making the kind of sacrifices you had to make for the first few years, for two decades or more, if they can handle it. Any bad luck during that time will bankrupt them.

  I know a National backbencher who says that he and some others tear their hair out over Nick Smith’s appalling economic instincts, like he should have been in the Labour Party all along. And these guys are right – Tories who STILL defend Nick Smith are part of a BIG problem with this country.
  
  I mean, look at all those years of announcements of grand State interference in housing markets, each stage sliding further and further towards the kind of thing we would have expected from Labour Dinosaurs. Now that the SHA’s have failed, like some of us always said they would, because we understand urban economics, it is “investment in more public housing”. Desperation to outflank Labour on the Left as an election approaches, all because there had been 9 years of NOT doing the right “centre right” thing, wasted.
  
  As I said SHA’s wouldn’t work, I will also predict that the more “social housing” you provide, the more insatiable the demand for it because of the “private” rest of the market being irredeemably distorted. When Thatcher came along, fully 1/3 of the Poms were in social housing and taxpayers money was being “run out of”. And there is always another cohort of the population who are NOT QUITE in the social housing, who are doing it tougher than those who ARE in it. Great for incentives to pay your own way versus dropping out and becoming a ward of the State.

        Which, despite witnessing the events that led to Brian O’Driscoll’s injury in 2005, you seem to fail to do…despite your emphatic assertions on the matter. Your self-confessed “utility” status may see you wander out of position easily, Longknives, but despite your apparent success to distract me with that 1976 All Blacks link, I don’t take my eye off the ball. And as Chuck Bird and Nukuleka can confirm, I don’t forget readily 😉

        I answered your question extensively one night Kimbo (RF can confirm as he had similar thoughts on the matter to me)- And alas I have no idea how to find that post now..
        But in a nutshell- Yeah I do believe BOD was ‘targeted’ (You are living in Disneyland if you think such a thing could never happen- Over the years I’ve seen All Blacks do it to opponents and likewise I’ve seen opponents ‘Target’ All Blacks) as O’Driscoll was the heart and soul of that Lion’s Team once Dallaglio was out of the Series..
        The attitude of Henry and Co and the cover-up that followed was nothing short of Disgraceful..(But again I went through all this in my previous Post)

        Kimbo I bow to your Rugby knowledge 99% of the time but the attack on O’Driscoll was both calculated and deliberate.
        Watching a drunken Graham Henry arrogantly smirking and refusing to answer questions about it at the Press conference (I was there!) was the end of my lifetime support of the All Blacks.
        The cover-up that followed was nothing short of disgraceful.

  I did cringe at that stupid song when I first heard it, typical PC bullshit and of course it had to be in stone age tongue. But now, given its most glorious failure I think its hilarious.

  Shall I anticipate Sir Leslie Bottock’s contribution, based on a summary of all his other posts – of course it was deliberate – Kiwi supporters are biased and their players are dirty.

    True. It was a “clean out at the ruck” using a technique (lifting a player up by one leg) that referees and coaches had allowed to creep into the game over the previous 18 or so months, rather than following the law, by binding onto the opponent and driving him off the ball, not up.
    
    Further supporting the Hanlon’s Razor stuff-up, not conspiracy analysis is that in such a situation, and as those who have played the game know, in the absence of specific communication, players attempting the clean out have the heads and eyes down or looking forward…and are usually unaware of what is happening on the other side of the body of the opponent they are grappling with. Including whether the ball has been released and is now in the hands of a centre in midfield. If you stop the clean out to look around you diminish the effectiveness and will lose possession if the ball is still there to be contested at the tackle. is part of the dynamics which those who have played the game, rather than opining from an armchair know occurs…at nearly every ruck or maul!
    
    Is why, if I was in a ruck or maul and I saw the ball released I’d always shout “break” to let my team mates know to get their heads up and chasing after the ball, but that’s not how it happens most of the time.
    
    So therefore it is unlikely Umaga and Mealamu were aware what they other was doing. And despite his anger and suspicions about the incident, at no stage has O’Driscoll indicated Umaga and Mealamu were communicating with one another.
    
    Therefore on the balance of probabilities it was stupidity (of technique), not malice.

    Oh, yes, the other thing that happens in a physical collision situation such as Mealamu and Umaga were in. is that players naturally close their eyes. Is an automatic response that some players manage to overcome, but nonetheless it is the natural instinct.
    
    Yet more circumstantial evidence why, despite it being seemingly “obvious” in slow motion sitting in your armchair, those in the split-second situation judged and acted differently, each unaware of the position of the ball, much less that the other was lifting up O’Driscoll’s leg…and once he went up, he had to come down.
    
    A damning indictment on the technique that players had been allowed to use at the time by administrators, referees and coaches – and why it was quickly outlawed when the consequences were shown up with O’Driscoll. I think I first saw the technique used by a Springbok player in a game against the All Blacks in 2004 and thought it spelled trouble, just as I think the current law encouraging and incentivising players to come off their feet when catching a high ball – it suposedly makes them “immune” from being tackled – is the same. It is only a matter of time IMHO before a player is seriously injured because in a split second an opponent will misjudge the point at which they come to earth and can be tackled, or, in jumping for the ball, mistimes and obstructs the man in the air.
    
    There was a tragic death in a game in 1899 between Otago and Taranaki where the law of the game at the time encouraged players to go up and try and “hurdle” an oponent, and I fear, with the current laws, it is only a matter of time before another top player is killed and/or paralysed for life.

  It was just another case (as again seen this year) of an ex-bullrush player reacting naturally (for him) after being made to look like a fool.
  
  And BB, it wasn’t a “tackle. The whinging one was trapped in a ruck/maul and the act was simple thuggery by two disgraces to NZ rugby.
  
  Never cited or referred to the judiciary by either side (I spoke to the judge) though so were the poms equally as sick of the B O’D whinging?

You must have had your mind on something else at the time so just in case you are not yet up with play:

Another word, Monsieur Poite. “Advantage”! It is something you play when the other side fucks up. You let play run on a bit. Like, maybe Liennart-Brown may have been able to remain upright as he ran the last few steps, unopposed, to score under the posts. There was no-one to stop him. What was it about an inevitable try that troubled you so much?
Here is a tip for you. When one team or another, the Lions on every occasion in this particular test, send a consortium to protest every decision against them, you do not kowtow and change your mind. First time round, you march them back ten metres. Second time you stick one of them in the bin. Whatever happens, you do not change your fucking mind—especially when the replay and the TMO said you were right in the first place.
Keeping Stock said the other day that he was nervous about a French ref. How right he was.

  There! Fixed that for ya. Not that it should have made a difference according to the laws of the game, but in the interests of sport? Maybe.
  
  Yeah, sure, if there was justice the same measuring rod would have been applied to Faumuina’s tackle in the last few minutes last week. But it wasn’t. That’s rugby. That’s life.
  
  Anyway, what a brilliant game, and a brilliant result! Gutsiest Lions team I ever saw (I was too young to see the 1971 Lions). The first test my dad ever saw was at Carisbrook in 1959, when a brilliant Lions team scored 4 tries but lost to 6 Don Clarke penalties. They ended up losing that series 1-3, when it could well have been 3-1 in their favour. So justice always evens out in the long run.
  
  And rugby was the winner tonight. Really!
