Apologies for the long post but I’m not so sure H1 is advising Labour any more than ‘Dump Little, get Jacinda’.

I wouldn’t put it past our former PM to engineer a guaranteed-to-fail lookalike in order to make her legend even greater, now she has failed to become UN SG.

1: Helen kept the Greens at a distance.

– Jacinda still holds them in high regard (even going so far as to canonise the disgraced Turei).

2: Helen never allowed her administration to be in thrall to the Maoris.

– Jacinda has already signalled the bro-rocracy will benefit from new water legislation.

Indeed, H1 blew off the Foreshore & Seabed hikoi in favour of meeting a sheep.

Labour STILL haven’t worked out where the centre is.

Just seen a post from Spotify in my Facebook feed informing me that not only is Jacinta Adhern a political leader she is also a DJ and here is her playlist. They are getting castigated in the comment section which gives me hope that despite the hype people see though the wrapping has changed the package hasn’t.

      People often make (important) decisions based on emotion (feelz) rather than on rational thought. Companies invest a lot of money in their “brand” precisely for this reason.

      Yes; this does come down to a need for competency. Jacinda is a face and little more. Having her as Labour leader perfectly articulates how the party grossly lacks competency, direction, vision and all the other attributes required for good government.

    Ann Coulter did a brilliant column on this years ago – possibly in the New York Post in 2007. It seems to have been taken down, Google searching brings up tons of lefty sites quoting her and having hissy fits, but not the original article.
    
    She effectively said the neo-Marxists “long march through the institutions” depended on women having the franchise, to be effective. She claimed that every single loony-left government in western democratic nations political history, was elected by the women’s vote and would not have won otherwise, never gaining a majority among male voters at any time.

    Oh, I don’t know. Did National get a surge in the poll when John Key replaced Bill English (I can’t remember)? Certainly the “Key” brand seemed to do National no harm (putting policy to one side for the moment). “Personalities” are often a part of what attracts voters, aren’t they?

  When Spotify and Facebook team up to try to sway your political opinions this is the time to be very afraid. These are two seemingly unrelated pieces of software which are being very effectively harnessed to put political propaganda to the masses using the same algorithms as Subway, Apple or Yves St Laurent use to sell you their products.
  
  This is what happened in the last US election and various analyses showed that political views were actually ‘seeded’ via fake FB ‘surveys’ etc to motivate the electorate in ways that simple media advertising is unable to do.
  
  Your Spoytify/FB experience indicates to me that there are forces at work here which might not even be under the control of the NZ Labour party, as they probably wouldn’t have the expertise, the vision or the money to work at this deep level.
  
  This is NOT just a silly linkage which means nothing and can be laughed off. This is very important and we should ask ourselves which organisation(s) would want to destroy stable governance of a small relatively prosperous country like ours. Maybe its just a trial run and NZ is acting as a test bed for some new Ai algorithm that’s under development. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t laugh this off.

Wow, Slater says what he really thinks. Yesterday he stated that Bill English is a “spiteful, vindictive, boring fool” Don’t you think that is just a teensy bit over the top? He has gone full retard which he always tells everyone else not to do. He has never got over the fact that neither John key or English will engage with him, for obvious reasons.

  Things with Bill dates back to the early 2000’s cumulating in National’s very poor showing in 2002 (for which I would put most blame on Messers Bolger and Birch together with some extreme privatisation policies). Also Michelle Boag defeated Cam’s dad for National Party presidency 2001 – so Cam has had it in for Bill and Michelle ever since.

  Bill is a Catholic. Cameron doesn’t like Catholics too much. I suspect this may be part of it. Happy to be proven wrong. However, I have to agree that I don’t read him as much as I used to. Being banned for putting “FFS” in a comment was the last straw. I suspect that those who maintain he is slightly unbalanced may have a point. Finally we have seen a Journalist come out and post some criticism about Jacinta.
John Roughan has produced a couple of beauties telling the public ” we need to see Jacinta thinking not gushing ” and another “Jacinta Ardern strikes me as someone who thrives in the bull shit rooms ” so this is a pleasant surprise emerging from some in the media after the first week in the new Labour Leader star struck fans from the media.

Am please to see that Maori have put a Rahui on the Waitakere Forests to keep people out of the forests due to Kauri dieback.
By doing so will allow the Auckland Council to stop the three committees and investigations and five Council meetings to do the same thing. They can now do what the Maori have said without decention.
Kauri dieback has been going on there for at least 50 years. It appears that the option is possibly phytophera as used by Avocado orchardists.
But best that each tree has to be injected annually.
It will be interesting to see how the Council and Maori will stop ramblers and cyclists etc from the ranges.
It will not stop the dieback anyway.

This kind of language may be culturally appropriate when dealing with a Korean dictator. Kim will probably respect Trump because he understands the language being used.

What language would you use when addressing a bully? Language that could be interpreted as weakness may invite further aggression and put lives in greater danger.

  I believe Kim knows full well, like Gorbachev and colleagues did, that Communism rests on a big lie, is a failure, the rest of the world is way ahead, and any war will reveal the technological backwardness of the commies. Gorbachev and colleagues had the humanity to do the right thing; Kim must be motivated purely by continuing to personally live high on the hog at the expense of his enslaved citizens. I doubt he would risk this by provoking the US to taking him out.

    Phil: Actually, I am not so sure…An rational actor would know only too well that attacking the US could only ever have one ending – especially since the Chinese have said plainly that in any such conflict they would stay neutral.
    
    There may well be North Korean generals who realise, as Admiral Yamamoto did in WW II, that to attack the US would be “to awaken a sleeping giant”..but in North Korea such dissenters end up being executed by anti aircraft gun!
    
    If NK really is stupid enough to attack the world’s only superpower – with a nuke FFS – I don’t see that the US would have much choice but to take out all their missile sites. Not hard to do, with minimal civilian casualties, with tactical nukes.

      I think that Trump would use smart but conventional ordnance to neutralize North Korean artillery and airfields. (If Kim launches something in the direction of Guam–a scenario that is getting a great deal of coverage on NHK (the Japanese BBC) at the moment.)
      
      Trump would only use tactical nuclear weapons if the North Koreans used nuclear weapons first.

        Yup, unfortunately for them much of this stuff is based on floppy-disks. And by that I mean the real old 8-inch disks.

        Taking out incoming Nukes should not detonate them, just destroy them, if my understanding of anti missile technology is correct. The anti-missile missile should just pulverise the incoming nuke which would then not detonate and the radiation fallout would be minimal. Correct me if wrong.

        Hi Rightoverlabour, its been a while but… I lived in NV ’01-’05 and according to a military wonk at the time, the anti-missile technology can’t guarantee not detonating the incoming warhead. Most of the tech was developed for standard ICBMs where the detonation would be “flash-bang” up high, but with a nuke, if they detonated it… there would be a field of dispersion.
        
        That said, I know there are newer sonic and laser based systems so maybe now they can take it out without detonation.

        What is this “fallout” stuff you speak of?
        
        When nukes were dropped on two Japanese cities the impact was pretty much limited to just parts of those cities. For example, only 40% of the buildings in Nagasaki were damaged/destroyed.
        
        Don’t get me wrong, it was very shitty for the people in those cities, but people further afield had far less impact.
        
        The firebombing of Tokyo (March 1945) caused far more destruction.
        
        Sure. modern nukes are more powerful, but the knowledge and understanding required to deploy them has improved too.

    Kim’s posturing is probably to show his country what a strong leader he is and how he “stands up” to Trump so fearlessly.
    If Kim does have his finger on the missile launch button, he may be using this high-stakes game to cower his unknown rivals into shutting up and keeping their heads down. (If he knew who his rivals were, they and their families would already be dead by now.)
    
    This whole episode may be about domestic political control in North Korea.

  However economic realism does not prevail in the USA or in many other countries.
  When the FED creates enormous free credit that has to find a home and it does, some in their markets and some in ours. Value and price have been separated. “Cheap money ” carries social costs: how do savers get rewarded or pensions paid?
  The wild stage is the Central Bank creating money to buy up the nations’s stock market. Who then owns the country and who then are the serfs?
  
  The unwinding of the credit boom has begun.

      I have been around for long enough and my research is adequate to have an opinion. This is not decades old. There are cycles as people borrow to the limit of their ability, over extend, hopefuls rush in at the end then repayment is needed and prices fall away in forced sales. Repeat for next round.
      
      I know I will be right some time. Since the last 2008 GFC the Central Banks have loosed an enormous quantity of credit onto the world for us to spend. It does reach us here as the money is wholesaled and our banks can borrow cheaply off shore. That credit is starting to be cut back so asset values here must be affected in time.

She is right about one thing however; an MP was hounded out of Parliament this week. But she can’t even get that completely right. In fact TWO Green MP’s were hounded out of Parliament this week, and abused on their way out the door by members of the so-called party of principle. Kennedy Graham and David Clendon were decent men, who took a stand on principle because they could not abide being led by a fraudster. On the pother hand, Ms Ghahraman, a barrister and officer of the court endorses fraud and lying.

    GG: Yeah, absolutely. Things like social welfare, and poverty in general, they disproportionately affect women, and they disproportionately affect people of colour in New Zealand. Our indigenous people, the Maori, in particular. Metiria is within the cross-section of those groups. The way that the system dehumanises poor people, people of colour, Maori and women as well, in order to treat them so poorly, played a part in this too. I definitely think that.
    
    Turei being forced to resign as Green Party leader had nothing to do with her ethnicity or her lack of privilige. And the only connection with her gender was the fact she was a woman.
    
    Why Turei was forced to finally, belatedly resign was that she ripped off the welfare system over a period of five years, lied about it, tried to minimise her fraud, and ultimately pissed off the wider family of her daughter. She still talks about “starting a movement”, and I would suggest that’s a movement out of the privilege of Parliament. I would also suggest that she’s burned her bridges with the legal profession, and would be most unlikely to be granted a practising certificate any time soon.
    
    And you know what? She has no one to blame but herself.

  One more bad poll for the Greens, and I expect Grant Robertson to stand down in Wellington Central in favour of James Shaw. Not that it’ll be a Dirty Deal, you understand, but it will be the MoU between Labour and the Greens in action… 😎

One of the commenters on here the other day said that happened to him when he reached the age of super. Surge in cannabis use

Breakdowns like Henri’s are soaring. NHS figures show hospital admissions with a primary or secondary diagnosis of drug-related mental and behavioural disorders have more than doubled over the past decade, to almost 82,000 a year. Most are believed to be cannabis-related: over the same period, new cases of adults treated after cannabis use rose 55 per cent – driven by under-25s.

Why this surge? It seems counterintuitive, as drug use (from heroin to cannabis) has fallen over the past decade – from 10.5 per cent of adults under 60 in 2005/06 to to 8.4 per cent in 2015/16. But ask those on the front line and, in their opinion, it can be blamed on on two combined forces: that cannabis has become up to five times more potent, while mental-health services have been cut back.

High-strength skunk has taken over Britain’s cannabis market. ‘There’s a sort of arms race to develop more powerful cannabis,’ says Sir Robin Murray, professor of psychiatric research at King’s College London.

    I think it would be logical to make properly processed extracts available through the same channels that hundreds of natural remedies already are. I used to accept the “need” to withhold everything relating to cannabis, from people, uncritically. But as I have got older and more skeptical, I think this is a case of “Big Pharma” being shite-scared about the effectiveness of certain non-patentable extracts of cannabis, and the politicians have been used as cronies.
    
    Even Congressman Trey Gowdy, not a liberal, is on YouTube in a Congressional hearing he is chairman at, grilling drug admin bureaucrats about why cannabis is a “class one” drug, resulting in justice coming down just as heavily or even more so, on possessors, as if they were into the most evil known high-tech manufactured drugs on the planet.

      In a commercial grow this means you can get more product out a year .

    Wouldn’t you be able to use that as an argument for legalising cannabis – or at least the sativa version? “Let stoners have access to safer cannabis – legalise it!”
    
    The article in Lancet Psychiatry suggests the use of more balanced forms of cannabis (presumably sativa) could possibly be less detrimental to mental health.

I have come to believe that “Big Pharma” is shite-scared of the effectiveness of ingredients in cannabis that they cannot patent, and many millions in profits in less effective drugs, manufactured by them, is at stake.
        
        They have already had several goes at regulating many effective natural remedies out of existence, and even drugs whose patents have expired but are still effective, have suddenly been placed on “controlled” lists.
        
        Creeping crony, rent-seeking capitalism is slowly helping the left destroy western civ. Lenin famously said “capitalists will sell you the rope you will use to hang them”, and Ayn Rand said in this context, that the crony capitalists should be hung “before they sell the rope to the commies” (i.e. provide the commies with valid pretexts to overthrow “unfair” capitalism).

      The war on drugs goes back to the 19th C.
      
      The East India Co and many others did a huge trade in opium to China . They had to export something to the Celestials as they were losing too much money to them buying tea.
      The Celestials weren’t happy with their population being turned into useless drug taking zombies so threw whitey out and burned the drugs.
      When Mao took control in the late ’40’s he was even less enamoured with the drug trade and is said to have shot the traffickers there ,so there was no supply. I’ve heard he also shot the druggies so there was no demand.
      That ended China’s drug problem from the 50’s to probably the ’80s ,when the commies lost their tight control (broadly) of society.
      
      The war on drugs can be won , if fought as a war.
      
      And before I’m accused of wanting to shoot the druggies I don’t , but the suppliers should be.

      It’s not so much a question of charitability to people on whatever side of the political divide, it is a question of the merits and demerits of each individual. People on the left are wrong about almost everything, but if one of them actually takes the right stand on one issue, of course I will use that. In the context that “look, even XYZ is clear about this issue”. Like George Monbiot on nuclear energy or Alexander Cockburn on the CAGW fraud.
      
      In the case of someone like PJW, I only have one caveat so far – “pity about his swallowing the illuminati stuff, otherwise he is sound”. In the case of most of the current National cabinet, there are so many things on which they have come down on the wrong side, I have to regard them as “on the wrong side”, period. Not even a case of “on the right side except a few unfortunate let-downs”.
      
      The late Chris Hitchens was a guy who was all over the place but I loved watching vids of him in action on things on which he was right. Destroying the disgraceful Red Ken, for example. He was a rare thing, a man of the left who was consistent in his principles, not straddling contradictory positions like most on the now-PC left. The defining issue there is really “political correctness”. With Chris it was “liberal values” that mattered, and that meant opposing Islam – for example. And not opposing freedom of speech. Of course he was excommunicated from the Left altogether for this. In fact someone on the Left only has to step out of line on one single issue, to get excommunicated. Germaine Greer is the latest, for her opinions on trannies.
      
      For what it is worth, James Delingpole claims to be “right about everything” and so far I have not found anything in his output to disagree with him about.

More on the demonitisation of conservative and independent videos by youtube.

YouTube is now demonetizing videos from content creators deemed too controversial for the platform, and conservatives and independents are being heavily impacted.

The move follows YouTube’s announcement earlier in August to catch and flag “controversial religious and supremacist” content hosted on the popular video-hosting website. Political and social commentators on YouTube are feeling the hurt—and they believe that they may be on a blacklist for having the wrong opinions.

Affected creators are unable to make money from their work, which is automatically flagged or vetted by volunteer “experts.” In addition, the new system incorporates “tougher standards” for controversial videos that do not break YouTube’s terms of service, which are placed in a purgatory state that effectively censors them from being recommended to YouTube viewers.

Independent journalist and activist Luke Rudkowski, who runs WeAreChange, told The Daily Caller that hundreds of his videos were demonetized in a single day on Thursday, effectively killing his ability to earn a living on YouTube.

“Having had 660 of my videos demonetized in one day left me a little stunned since this is the core for my income but left me with the impression that this was done on purpose,” said Rudkowski, who said that the videos included some of his most popular videos from years ago. “This was videos from years ago predominately targeting the most viewed videos which has eviscerated my income.”

Edgy YouTube comedian Razorfist says every single one of his videos was demonetized. His biggest issue with the site was how the platform values progressive voices over everyone else through biased algorithms. Razorfist cited a video rebuttal to Sam Seder (a left wing comedian) as an example of the bias. He claims that Seder posted a reply containing Razorfist’s video in its entirety, but the algorithm flagged the original video for demonetization.

Of course a lot of the recommendations for particular vids occur via Twitter and Facebook, who are also part of the left’s conspiracy against freedom of speech. So rival platforms are needed to them too. Interesting times.

I never saw this coming. The rock band Journey may be about to break up after its members (sans guitarist Neal Schon) went to the White House to meet Trump. It turns out that the wife of keyboardist Jonathan Cain is a pastor, and is Trump’s “primary spiritual advisor”. Schon isn’t happy about it and voiced his displeasure on social media.

“How would you feel if u found out that the rest of the band wanted to tour without me?” Schon asked on Twitter. “They will not tour with Journey name. Trust me. I’ve spent way too long building to give up the brand… F-ing insane. It is a serious try at hijacking JRNY… It’s now time for the truth (about) all I have endured this year, enough is enough. Exposing any abusive, malicious behavior.”

For Schon, that behavior includes buddying up to Trump, after, he says, they’d previously had band meetings agreeing not to bring politics or religion into the band. Both of those are touchy subjects, since keyboard player Jonathan Cain has stated publicly that he brings Jesus onto the stage with him at Journey shows, while Schon has declared that the band as an entity shouldn’t appear to favor any deity in particular. Cain’s entrée into the White House at any given time is an easy one: his wife, Paula White, is the pastor of a Pentecostal megachurch in Florida who became a household name even in secular circles over the last year as the president’s primary spiritual advisor.

It’s not surprising that Schon didn’t receive an invitation to tag along to the White House, but he was enraged when he apparently found out about it by seeing an NBC story singer Arnel Pineda posted in his Facebook feed with a headline indicating the entire band had attended. “Everybody’s entitled to like and believe what they want but when we’ve had this discussion many, many times it was always a no WH. All know,” Schon wrote. “Arranged photo op against what we’ve all stood for up until 2 years ago (when) Jon changed radically… And then on top of it the stories that have stemmed from their visit say JOURNEY was there. Like I don’t exist. I brought all these guys in.”

In response to a fan’s tweet asking, “Is this going to affect the band lineup?,” Schon replied, “I’m not sure. The last two years have not been easy. Was fine till then.” Answering a tweet saying it was “time to ditch the toxic people in your life,” Schon got religious for a moment, posting emoji of praying hands and writing, “Amen to that. I don’t deserve this bs. I will cut it all out like cancer. Too f-ing toxic to live in.”

If every country put a ship in harms way maybe this could all be avoided, It’s a bit weird this feeling someone is gonna use a nuke in anger contrary to what out fathers and grand and great grand fathers expected and fought for and the left are slow to act in any meaningful way. At least Australia has drawn a line shoulder to shoulder. It’s the last bit of dreamy leftyness yet to be beaten out of me, but at least we are jaw jawing.   In his memo, Damore cites a series of studies, making the case, for example, that men tend to be more interested in things and women more interested in people. (Interest is not the same as ability.) Several scientists in the field have backed up his summary of the data. “Despite how it’s been portrayed, the memo was fair and factually accurate,” Debra Soh wrote in The Globe and Mail in Toronto.
  
  Geoffrey Miller, a prominent evolutionary psychologist, wrote in Quillette, “For what it’s worth, I think that almost all of the Google memo’s empirical claims are scientifically accurate.”
  
  Damore was especially careful to say this research applies only to populations, not individuals: “Many of these differences are small and there’s significant overlap between men and women, so you can’t say anything about an individual given these population-level distributions.”
  
  Google’s diversity officer, Danielle Brown […] didn’t wrestle with any of the evidence behind Damore’s memo. She just wrote his views “advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.” This is ideology obliterating reason.
  
  The fourth actor is the media. The coverage of the memo has been atrocious.
  
  As Conor Friedersdorf wrote in The Atlantic, “I cannot remember the last time so many outlets and observers mischaracterized so many aspects of a text everyone possessed.” Various reporters and critics apparently decided that Damore opposes all things Enlightened People believe and therefore they don’t have to afford him the basic standards of intellectual fairness.
  
  The mob that hounded Damore was like the mobs we’ve seen on a lot of college campuses. We all have our theories about why these moral crazes are suddenly so common. I’d say that radical uncertainty about morality, meaning and life in general is producing intense anxiety. Some people embrace moral absolutism in a desperate effort to find solid ground. They feel a rare and comforting sense of moral certainty when they are purging an evil person who has violated one of their sacred taboos.
  
  Which brings us to Pichai, the supposed grown-up in the room. He could have wrestled with the tension between population-level research and individual experience. He could have stood up for the free flow of information. Instead he joined the mob. He fired Damore and wrote, “To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not O.K.”
  
  That is a blatantly dishonest characterization of the memo. Damore wrote nothing like that about his Google colleagues. Either Pichai is unprepared to understand the research (unlikely), is not capable of handling complex data flows (a bad trait in a C.E.O.) or was simply too afraid to stand up to a mob.

        Mr Priestley, a self-taught project manager and crusader originally from Wellington, first set up camp in the financial heart of Sydney in 1991 with the aim of getting under politicians’ noses to underline Australia’s homelessness problem.

Thirty-six years ago today, IBM introduced its PC, the progenitor of desktop PCs. By 2008, more than a billion were in use.

Specs included a monochrome screen and up to two 160kb floppy disc drives. Memory was up to 258K plus 40K of built-in ROM.

IBM’s fact sheet with the PC said application software available included:

– VisiCalc, which it described as a problem-solving program package for financial or mathematical forecasting and computations. “All data is arranged into a grid of up to 63 columns and 254 rows and interrelated so that users may create ‘what if’ situations that will show the effect of one changed element on the remainder of the data.”
– General Ledger, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable by Peachtree Software.
– EasyWriter, which IBM said “lets users process words and text quickly”.
– Microsoft Adventure, a role-playing fantasy game set in a network of caves.
– Communications software allowing access to “external data like Dow Jones News/Retrieval and The Source”.

My first PC (an IBM PC) had a 10Mb hard drive, and the cost was in the thousands. Didn’t seem expensive at the time.

Thank goodness for dirty jokes. Some of the clean ones quickly grow corny. Like the Daily Mail wrap of the allegedly funniest jokes of all time (link below). The list has a strong Anglo bias.

The change in attitude to women over the years is notable. I’ve always thought blondes can be very attractive, and puzzle why they are portrayed as allegedly dumb, as in this joke, judged in the Mail’s list as the “fourth funniest joke of all time:”

Alt-right activists held torches and marched late Friday through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville.

Chanting “blood and soil” and “one people, one nation, end immigration,” the group rallied around a statue of Thomas Jefferson before they clashed with counterprotesters, CNN affiliate WWBT reported.

The march came hours before a Saturday rally that police anticipate will attract as many as 2,000 to 6,000 people, in an event that could be the “largest hate-gathering of it’s kind in decades in the United States,” as described by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Before the group left the university’s grounds when police arrived and ruled it unlawful assembly, outraged city and UVA officials condemned Friday’s gathering.

“In my 47 years of association with @UVA, this was the most nauseating thing I’ve ever seen. We need an exorcism on the Lawn,” Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics tweeted.

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer released a statement referring to Friday’s rally as a “cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance march down the lawns of the architect of our Bill of Rights.”

“Everyone has a right under the First Amendment to express their opinion peaceably, so here’s mine: not only as the Mayor of Charlottesville, but as a UVA faculty member and alumnus, I am beyond disgusted by this unsanctioned and despicable display of visual intimidation on a college campus,” he added.

University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan said law enforcement is investigating the “intolerable” violence displayed on the campus.

“I strongly condemn the unprovoked assault on members of our community, including University personnel who were attempting to maintain order,” she said in a statement.

“Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, and it is my hope that any individuals responsible for criminal acts are held accountable.”

We are lucky in NZ. Our craziest politician is probably Michael Hansen, who for half a century has been standing unsuccessfully for Parliament and for Mayor of Christchurch and local boards.

Michael preaches consistently about mysterious rays he believes bombard his city and how as Mayor he would work a strictly eight-hour day.

Michael’s election planks have included reforming immigration policy to give overwhelming priority to Swedish girls.
