I’m almost convinced Helen Clark phoned the Labour Party mandarins over the weekend and finally gave them the answers the morons so desperately needed.

It was Jacinda Ardern’s replies to Duncan Garner’s self-same question about that possibility that gave it away.

Jacinda spluttered and said Clark never phoned her, and by the way she’s in Europe!!!

Yeah, Helen Clark’s in Europe. So, absolutely no way to get in touch with NZ Labour then… um, except by phone? Maybe they don’t have them in Europe.

Come to think of it, why would Clark phone Jacinda anyway?

If I was advising a client on whom to employ and why, I would leave the actual approach to the potential employee to… the employer.

Clark’s gotta be behind this. If Jacinda kicks the Greens in the slats next week then you’d have to assume she’s advising the LP

  There were suggestions on social media on Tuesday morning that Clark and Cullen were on the phone to Labour MP’s for much of Monday night. I think it’s fair to say that their purpose wasn’t to shore up Andrew Little’s leadership!

    “Complete and utter rubbish as you surmised. Fake news in the real sense.”
    However Hooten stuck to his guns without providing any corroborating evidence
    “I stand by what I said.”

        This is the first one since their rules were changed. The caucus is not allowed to have coups anymore except in close proximity to an election.
        Maybe now that they haven’t had a leader foisted on them the decision will stick!
        In the meantime their political opponents are taking a day or two to figure out a strategy that won’t alienate what few young voters they might have.
        No such caution displayed on this forum . . . . . . for obvious reasons!

  Except that – the housing bubble that is going to burst one day, is National’s housing bubble. It was Helen’s housing bubble in 2008 but National made it their own.
  
  If National are in office when it bursts, it is going to be very hard for them to shift blame to Labour or anyone else.
  
  Because of economic cycle lengths, it is possible it won’t burst until 2025, but 2021 is likely. And anything out of the ordinary could bring it on sooner.
  
  Ireland’s highest median multiple was 6.6 in Dublin in 2007. In hindsight one day, they are going to look lucky for getting their crash over with in 2008. Postponing it for another cycle and setting new record median multiples like 10+ is far from responsible, principled government. Why is this so difficult to see?
  
  I know there are works on manias and the human capacity for self-delusion relating to economic bubbles, but right after a series of cautionary examples in other economies???? This beggars belief. It is the Aussies and the Canucks as well as us.

    There are only two ways the housing bubble would burst:
    1. People leaving NZ in droves.
    2. The cost of new houses (including land) dropping 20-30%.
    Neither is particularly likely.
    Compare with tulips (think tulip bubble in the 1600’s). People may want tulips but do not need them. People need houses.

      or NZ economy goes into massive recession as the 10-20% of GDP that has been pumped into it yearly by increased borrowing over the last 7-8 years ends. As a result a large number of people lose jobs (we are already set to shed thousands from real estate industry alone, and building industry will implode too), can’t service their mortgages and hey-presto housing market collapse.

        Why would you think the realestste industry would lose jobs? Its the hardest now that its been in years, some agents are going months without getting a listing to sell.
        If the market drops 10% and there was a glut of listings then agents would actually start earning again.

        Auckland has been selling 30000 houses a year at about $30k commission each, that is a billion more or less for perhaps half the countries real estate earnings. Assuming about $100k per direct job a 30% reduction in sales is about 3000 jobs gone. Perhaps double that with nationwide downturn.
        
        And increased building/land use regulations combined with expectation of falling prices have made it unprofitable to build in Auckland, so building industry will retrench severely.
        
        With all the secondary jobs supported by these shrinking industries, it’s going to be an economic bloodbath. It won’t really hit for months yet (after election), but tough times are coming.

        I’ve kept a close eye on published REINZ data for last 8 years, and keep a running record as I prefer to have the actual data than the industry spin. June Auckland region sales 1769, may 2227 april 1775. Last few months about 65% of sales a year ago.

      Well I really hope you are right peterwn, however, if the past few years has proven anything it is that “Anything is possible”.
      
      The libtards have convinced themselves that landlords are satanically evil. Me Tu has shown that there are votes in ‘stick it to the man’ policies. Corbyn showed that bribes can garner votes.
      
      It is not the constituency of the left that would suffer if a house price crash was triggered! And it would be easy to do so. Bring in a punitive land taxation on any private individual/institution owning more than one house. 100% capital gains on sales of any house other than the primary home. Shut off immigration. Crash the economy. Drive the productive overseas. Raise welfare to unsustainable levels.
      
      Clark 2008 showed (buying a train set etc) that the left has no compunction about spiking the guns for an incoming National government.
      
      Your problem peterwn is that you are so rational and reasonable. Two characteristics that are utterly missing from the left.

      These housing bubbles are not driven by “what people can be forced to pay for a necessity”, they are being driven by speculators crazed with greed for capital gains. First home buyers have been excluded long since. It is inevitable that bubbles driven by speculation, will burst one day. There is a peak they reach, where it is no longer possible to push it up any more (a main reason being the relationship between money supply and markets appetite for government bonds); and the problem is that speculators financed and geared up in their portfolios, need continual inflation. If prices merely flat-line they are toast, their holding costs are killing them.
      
      Once things have started rolling the other way, it is like a chain reaction. The bigger it got pumped up, the bigger the fuel for the chain reaction. You don’t even need to understand the complex details, you could at least accept historical experience. One of the reasons bubbles form and finally top out as I am describing, is that people are so easily self-deluded when there is easy money at stake.

        Ultimately this will work as well as printing money to make people richer, because essentially that is what has happened. There is nothing behind house prices that supports their current prices.

      A House is an economic asset .
      You should be making a return in income to cover expenditure not rely on capital gains beating inflation for ever.
      
      We have all seen economic cycles.

    There are plenty of houses in NZ and in fact some people own heaps of the things. The trouble is the banks have created too much funny money which drives inflation. Essentially they are printing money to maintain the property market. This is what made countries like Zimbabwe the success they are today.

I’ve seen some changes during that time, some positive, some not but NZ is still the best country on the planet by far!

What we have here is way better than what 95% of the world have and we should never lose sight of that.

To the dipshits who still think that Helen Clark was the best PM ever, Jacinda probably looks good enough and close enough and that’s where it ends.

Chick, can talk passionately, all good.

S Joyce and Espiner went head to head about it and Joyce basically said Labour’s problem is that they think it’s the leader that’s screwing them up, not their policies.

If I was there I would have reminded Joyce that National have taken all of Labour’s policies, pushing Labour ever further left.

Clark didn’t exactly “destroy the Labour Party” so much as set NZ up for destruction at the hands of a future electoral choice between Vichy National, following her entire prescription and even outdoing her on Iwi mafia enabling; or Labour trying to be different by going even further left.
    
    The entire political spectrum was ratcheted left by Helen Clark and in the long game, I don’t call that “getting defeated”, any more than Hitler was “defeated” by the Vichy French – who “preserved their sovereignty” by “accepting contemporary political trends”, not by winning any actual battles.

How can the Green Party have any credibility on the Auditor General in saying his job is not tenable through what happened when one of the Leaders of their own Party has committed fraud. Don’t get me wrong I personally don’t think Mr Mathews should be reinstated to the job as Audtor General for what happened to his innocent staff but the Greens to go on about not tenable is hypocritical.

      I accidentally had a conversation about politics with a colleague, who got quite upset when I suggested that the Greens are lead by a criminal.
      This colleague, who I thought was quite intelligent, felt that MeTu had not done anything wrong, but she also thought that the Greens were still an environmental party.
      I guess I was wrong about the level of intelligence, or I was wrong thinking that intelligent people could see past MeTu.

  The situation with Matthews needs to be taken seriously.
  At best he was incompetent at MOT and at worst he was perhaps seduced by Harrison.
  He allowed several of his staff (at least 3) swing in the wind because he was besotted with Harrison.
  His judgment is poor at the very best.
  
  I am absolutely NO fan of the Watermelons but at least they are actually doing something about NZ instead of going on protest flotillas against Israel or being whiny foreign troublemakers like Mojo Mathers.
  
  The person who is due kudos is Sue Moroney for pursuing this despite the blockers within senior government ranks i.e. the senior self-servants. They are NOT public servants.
  
  Where Martin Matthews crossed the line was in ignoring the Australian Federal Police. They don’t piss around with traffic fines and burglaries. If they reach out overseas it is serious.
  Matthews was too stupid or too corrupted by then to act properly.
  
  Matthews may not have ruined the lives of multiple people to whom he was ‘the boss’ but he certainly messed up their careers.
  He was likely c***struck by Harrison so he does not have the credentials to be an NZ’s top auditor watching over our $70 billion plus per year public expenditure.
  The term audit comes from the Latin ‘I listen’.
  He did not listen to his staff and allowed a bully to mess them up while he stood by with his dick in his hand. For years.
  
  Matthews has lurked in the Public service (obviously around some pretty odious people) filling dead men’s shoes. This doesnot make him worthy of a senior role simply because of ‘time served’.
  He did not look after the best interests of the taxpayers money nor his staff to whom he had a fiduciary responsibility to provide a safe work environment.

  And yet the invoices were paid. Why?
  
  Melbourne’s police fraud and extortion unit contacted the Ministry of Transport on July 25, 2014 saying that Harrison, clearly identified by her date of birth, was a person of interest who they wanted to interview. Matthews actually discussed this with Harrison, but nothing was done. Why?
  
  Matthews appears to have personally shut down internal investigations into Harrison – amazingly, at Harrison’s request. Why?…..

Virtually nil crime. You left the house unlocked, safe in the knowledge that house wouldn’t be rotten in 15 years.

You didn’t see fillets of mullet for 22 bucks a kg either. Or imported shit basa fillets.

Maori and Pakeha lived cheek by jowl, coming together for rugby or a bit of forestry. Sure there were some problems but nothing like the social wreckage we see around us today.

  I remember that place Duggledog, the place where you couldn’t get a beer after 10:30pm or on Sundays. the only restaurants were Cobb and Co and Tony’s. There were only 2 TV channels (of tripe..ehem, dig this and it’s in the bag) also the place where the milk got spoiled in the sun or the neighbours dog ripped the tops off and drank the cream…Ah yes, those were the days.. 🙂

    Oh, come on! I remember when the only restaurant in town was the Chinese take-away – open ‘late’ on Friday because the RCs couldn’t eat meat and had fish and chips instead. So we ALL had f&c.
    And the local policeman would follow the drunken driver home (after 6 o’clock closing) to ensure he got there safely –
    And children were all indoors after dark (because there could be nasty people about) Indeed anyone out after dark on foot, not moving at a purposeful pace would be considered worthy of watching.

Interesting interview on Red Radio this morning with Tuku Morgan of the Maori party.
It seems that they are planning to jump Waka at a drop of a hat if it looks like Labour might be able to form a government. If The Nat’s need to get into bed with the geriatric drunk then I hope they can dump Act, the bow tied skunk and the Maori party for a two party deal. Heaven forbit however that it comes to pass. Two ✔️✔️ National.

A standard line being used a lot yesterday was “I don’t recall Bill English or any other male politician being asked about their family plans”. Yes, it’s sexist that female politicians get asked this question and males don’t. But logically we shouldn’t stop asking female politicians about their family plans – we should start asking male politicians about theirs as well.

The reason we don’t ask male politicians about their family plans is the old-fashioned assumption that the woman will be the one who gives up their job to spend time with the children. But if we are going to move towards a situation where childcare duties are shared equally between men and women, then we should be asking both male and female politicians whether they are considering starting a family during their term in office. More specifically, how much of their time they expect to have to devote to their family is a completely legitimate question that voters deserve to have answered.

Being Prime Minister is a full time job. If a potential PM is going to have some other major time commitment that means they can’t devote themselves fully to the role (and being the primary caregiver to young children certainly qualifies), then voters absolutely have the right to know about that.

A one on one interview on TV would have been better but now that has been killed. I see it has even made it to the BBC.   Bill’s situation is well known. He got qualified, had *real* jobs, knew what farming is all about, raised a family and was then free to indulge in politics. His wife would have worked hours to suit circumstances and when sufficiently free of family responsibilities now has her own medical practice. Jenny Shipley similarly had life experiences was on committees associated with family activities and when free could indulge in politics.
  This was also behind the outdated concept of the ‘Ministerial House’. Minister’s family would be growing up, wife looking after the kids, Minister expected to work full time in Wellington, so they needed to be housed in Wellington as appropriate for a Minister. Then the media got all upset when a Minister’s daughter rode in the car with daddy and the driver dropped daddy off first then dropped daughter off at Wellington Girls on the way back to the Public Service Garage in Thorndon.

Can I comment on youth suicide. I wonder how many have come from stable families with a loving mother and a loving father who really wanted to bring them into the world.

Dont see anyone else raising this. See a whole of hand wringing and pollies wanting to throw more and more money at the problem.

Maybe just maybe it would be better spending that money on a fence at the top of the cliff rather than a fleet of hearses at the bottom of the cliff.

Just saying.

  My son attempted suicide. He had mental illness. It was a hard time.
  
  What is clear is that mental illness like schizophrenia can be triggered in young adults by trauma. Often that trauma will have been experienced years earlier as a child. Such trauma can certainly include children exposed to dysfunctional functional and disintegrating families. Of course it can also be other sources of trauma.

  My son took his life and he was greatly wanted and one of 3 much loved children in a happy, stable family. Suicide can occur in any family and it is one of life’s greatest tragedies. He was suffering depression and was an over achiever. We think his perfectionism was a factor. I never want it to happen to anyone else. There’s a hole in my heart that will never heal.

  I am deeply sorry for all who have had such loss.
  
  A fence is not quite how I would put it
  We have one place where society can intervene with children.
  Schools.
  By the time problem get to CYF’s Police or A&E it is often to late. I have family and close friends who work at the coalface. Such people need funding well. If my significant other averts one child’s headlong rush into dysfunction we save far more than her salary. Social services in schools are underfunded for the value of work the they do .
  
  Some schools do not see social services as a focus worth pursuing. Well developed social service is not necessarily a service provided .
  Social work can not be successfully done by teachers. Teachers are there to teach an entire class not assist at risk children make life choices or access help. You need professionals trained in counseling and the interface with the community to have good outcomes. In Auckland there is a shortage of professional trained people to full such positions.
  
  I believe National signaled a switch towards acknowledging this side of schools when it recently changed minister. and focus in education to a more encompassing paradigm than just the three R’s.
  I wish them well and hope to hear good news from my friends.

    My view is that Catherine Harris of Fairfax NZ articles above provide excellent texture … and deserve to be read closely. She has a deep understanding of these issues.
    
    It saddens me after all these years how the centre-right is losing the ‘commanding heights’ on these issues to the centre left.
    
    I was very impressed indeed listening to Jacinda Ardern on radio with Guyon Espiner yesterday (access via yesterdays links above).
    
    For me its history repeating itself from the early 1990’s … when I was South Island President for the Property Council.
    
    The blasted Tories on the Christchurch Council let me down then in getting land opened up for urban development … and it was the Lefties who came on board … led by the Christchurch Councils Environment Committee Chairman Charles Manning.
    
    Like me … Manning detests the social injustice of artificially ramping up house prices by starving land supply.
    
    I have enormous admiration for Charles Manning. Above all else … a caring person. A remarkable man.

      I agree. I think the root of the problem is town planning since the late 70s (sprawl is bad, Euro density is good), enabled by both Greens and financiers.
      
      Problem is, no one made it clear to Kiwis that the downside of this was that they would be living in small, expensive apartments or, if they were flush, townhouses. Kiwis demand space – and quite rightly, else what is the point of living here?

  National would get the kick in the slats they need and come back in 2020 refocused.
  
  If that is going to happen, then let it happen now while the country (and the world) is in reasonable shape and we’re not recovering from a GFC or Canterbury EQ or some such – when we need a solid team in power. Sure, we can’t predict the future, but we have to work with what we’ve got.
  
  Think of this like the All Blacks losing the odd test match when they get complacent. It helps them get back on their A-game again. Better they do that when it doesn’t matter (eg. a Lions tour) than in the middle of RWC.

How Hillary Clinton bullied Bangladesh to get one of her donors off the hook.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attempted to bully tiny Bangladesh to force it to end a corruption investigation of Mohammad Yunus, a long-time Clinton family friend and Clinton Foundation donor, according to documents The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group obtained.

The information comes from two Bangladeshi government documents generated as part of a request from the U.S. Congress. They shed new, disturbing light on Clinton’s use of hard-ball tactics against the poorest country in South Asia in order to help her millionaire friend and foundation donor.

The documents show Clinton deployed an array of high-powered Department of State, U.S. Embassy and World Bank officials to rescue Yunus, who faced financial mismanagement charges at a state-owned bank called Grameen Bank. He was eventually removed from the bank.

Yunus’ net worth is estimated at $10 million and his own U.S.-based nonprofits donated up to $300,000 to the Clinton Foundation, according to the foundation’s website.

In 2010, as a Grameen Bank managing director, Yunus faced multiple charges of financial improprieties, including accusations in a Danish documentary that he diverted $100 million from Grameen and transferred them toward his own entities. The charges sparked an immediate uproar in the impoverished country where the per capita annual income is about $1,000.

Clinton repeatedly and directly threatened Bangladesh on behalf of Yunus, warning Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that the World Bank could revoke a previously approved $1.2 billion loan to build a key bridge over the Padma River.

The U.S. has been the largest donor to the World Bank and in 2011 contributed $1.5 billion to the bank. Clinton, as secretary of state, wielded tremendous influence over it.

Clinton’s action on the bridge was designed to undermine and humiliate Hasina, one of the only female heads of state in the Muslim world. The Wall Street Journal described the Padma River project as “a centerpiece” of Hasina’s pledge to improve infrastructure in the country.

A retired WINZ investigator told me that even if someone pays back money that has been defrauded it still results in a prosecution, leaving it up to the judge to decide penalty.

It would be very unusual to have it sorted in 6 weeks as she has to produce a heap of documentation.

  I understand the threshold for a WINZ prosecution is $5 000 “overpayment” as the cost of litigation outweighs the benefit (no pun intended). Part of the interview will have been a request to identify the flatmates – if one was the father of her child then she is in big crap (although I suspect the investigation will not progress much before the election).

    IRD can go quite far in investigating tax fraud. The Commissioner has penal powers and can determine the amount payable which cannot be disputed except by real evidence. Penal taxes are in addition as is default interest. All this can be collected by the CIR as a debt due.
    Not co-operating to the fullest is an invitation to prosecution as is withholding information.

      2. USA only has its military on based in South Korea, not “all round”.

        The Korean Peninsula should be one country
        
        At the end of WW2 the USSR took the Japanese surrender in Korea and recognized an interim Government.
        
        The USA then moved to recognize a different interim Government a moved into the South to make it stick and an agreement was made to temporarily divide the peninsula at the 38th parallel each under its own interim Government.
        
        That temporary fix has become permanent – Korea should have been left to its own devices to resolve this years ago, before we were born in fact, but it wasn’t and here we are

  After being tried in Court, she needs to be made to:
  1. repay every cent that she stole from the public purse through her fraud; plus
  2. pay full interest on her illegal gains, at the Government ‘overdue’ rates prevailing at the time of her offence(s), such interest compounding from the specific years of her offences through to the date of her full repayment (see 1. above); plus
  3. submit to a punishment for her crimes in the form of an appropriate legal penalty (substantial monetary fine? home detention? term of imprisonment?) commensurate with the scale of the crimes that she has admitted.

Hoping he’s alright but boy late night GD had died a slow death since DPF bought in nested comments and the disappearance of other key protagonists such as Milkmaid and (gulp) Stephieboy.

Whilst overall for the better, it’s created a behaviour where there is a rush to post before 10am so people have “their posts” read by after about midday, the flood turns into a trickle.

How about a morning GD, them a post 2pm GD?
