In this verbatim extract from Kim Hill’s interview with Ian Binnie, he demonstrates that Judith Collins did not read his report, and that Michael Guest and John Pike might be deemed to have violated their duty to New Zealand courts. What Judith Collins did was an unspeakable outrage, she must be voted from office for this, and be seen to have ruled herself from any position that can do further damage to New Zealand’s international reputation.
In the rest of the interview Binnie shows total command of the science, logistics and motivations in the mass murder suicide by Robin Bain.
Maybe someone will be civilised enough to GENERALLY DEBATE matters in this interview and the concerns I have just outlined.
Ideally the three he accuses of deceit will answer his specific allegations publicly some day, because they will never disappear.

KH:
Right.. and you wrote up your report, and you sent it off, what was the first inkling you got, that the government or the
minister was unhappy with it.
IB:
I had some inkling beforehand that the minister was a sort of Law and Order character and she was not going to be pleased
with my view, the first contact I had, I was summonsed – I was in Cairo at the time, to come to Auckland to meet with the
Minister,
KH:
This is Judith Collins now..
IB:
Yes Judith Collins, and I had a 15 minute meeting, which meant I’d spent about an hour in an aeroplane for every minute I had with the Minister, I had the very clear impression she had not read my report.
She certainly knew what the bottom line was, and she had a briefing note, which I had been given beforehand, which set out
three points, those are the only points that she touched on, and when I responded, one of them was this thing about Michael
Guest, er, Michael Guest says he’s guilty.
KH:
Michael Guest is a lawyer?
IB:
Michael Guest is the original defence lawyer, and defence lawyers aren’t very happy when a client spends 13yrs in jail, and is then acquitted by the Privy Council – why the minister would attach importance to what Michael Guest said, is beyond me, but the minister did not seem to realise,
KH:
But hang on, you’re saying Michael Guest is a defence lawyer right?
IB:
Yep.
KH:
So why would a defence lawyer feel obliged to say that David Bain is now guilty are you suggesting that because someone else has found him innocent, he’s aggrieved?
IB:
No no what Im suggesting is that there’s a certain level of professional embarrassment if you have unsuccessfully defended somebody… it makes you feel better in the end if they’re guilty anyway.
KH:
Alright I understand… yep.
IB:
My point is this, that when I replied to the ministers point about Michael Guest has sent me an email that David Bain is guilty, I mean there was zero registration on the face of the minister, (long pause) that I had even dealt with this in my report. And in fact what she was telling me, I had already ACCEPTED in the report in black and white, I said on this point, I said I accept what Michael Guest said, the minister didn’t seem to realise that.
KH:
By which you deduce that she did not read the report.
IB:
Well there were a number of items er.. for example she has one or another of her points had to do with Sir Thomas Thorpe,
who had interviewed David Bain, who really concluded that his application for clemency shouldn’t go anywhere because… er there was nothing to it – well of course a few years later the Privy Council said yes! theres a lot! Theres a lot here and theres a real problem with this case and we are quashing the convictions not as technical miscarriages of justice but the word they used was this has been an ACTUAL miscarriage of justice.
So how one can leap-frog back over the Privy Council to ’Tommy Thorpe’ she called him, years before and say well look what
Tommy Thorpe says, suggests that she had no grip of anything that had gone on, ah in between, all of which was in my report.
KH:
It seems that Judith Collins told Dr Robert Fisher that she believed that there were significant problems with your report
I wonder, how she concluded that.. have you any ideas?
IB:
Yes I have no doubt at all that the prosecutors John Pike and er, his colleague, had been with the Bain case for years, they were
very heavily committed to the prosecution they had gone to the Privy Council – lost at the Privy Council, had gone into this 12
week re-trial, lost at the retrial. they didn’t want to give up! There is no way Judith Collins could have prepared that letter of instruction, I think it came straight from the prosecutors and she signed off, and away we went.

        It was interesting to see the feedback on Facebook (shame Stuff has disabled comments…wonder why) about 60% saying she was faking it and the remainder split between she will personally care for everyone to there is no way she can do anything she promised.

  You’ll be surprised by the Lundy appeal when you read it, a Crown case built on junk science and offenders never found. Even more surprise will be those that fell into a trap of subjective guess work after viewing a TV clip. A lot more involved but keeping it simple and judging a case by a news clip doesn’t engender confidence that you could understand it. So we’ll see and resume the conversation with the facts are made public.

  She had plenty of time to practice the performance it was known about for some time and had even been on TV before.
  What on earth happens when the Beige BMW goes past white crosses on the side of the road. Does the car come to a halt so she can have a little cry.
  She better get a nice pair of Hunter gumboots sorry Redbands because with her policies there will be more farmers committing suicide. They are struggling out of a huge downturn, there have been and will be more suicides by farmers with what they are proposing, sometimes just a step too far.
  The rest of the country did not experience the downturn that farmers did – the bank knocking on the door. So they kept working for the good of the country so that the lattes could still be enjoyed in Ponsonby.

      Lundy is innocent, we saw two trials and two failed appeals in Thomas and Pora. This case is heading for two trials and one failed appeal in my opinion, which is based on case facts, and knowledge of crown malfeasance.

        Not so sure Jack. Read the trial transcripts carefully and you will soon see the proof of innocence. There are some question marks about the jury pool, and the verdict is suggestive of bias. Unfortunately the sanctity of the jury is a sonofabitch for future proceedings. Don’t believe everything Judith Potter says about juries.

    Suicide can be devastating for families, but it’s also one of those insoluble issues that liberal trendies can seize on.
    
    Similar well, almost panic, has popped up in Britain.
    
    I found this extract from Wikipedia interesting in the light of our media drive to open up restrictions on reporting suicide:
    
    According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide contagion is a serious problem, especially for young people. Suicide can be facilitated in vulnerable teens by exposure to real or fictional accounts of suicide, including media coverage of suicide, such as intensive reporting of the suicide of a celebrity or idol …
    
    Rates of drug abuse and divorce, for example, also seem relevant.
    
    With suicides caused by depression, you have to wonder whether the de-institutionalisation of mental health care, the continued starving of this service for cash, and media/public persecution of psychiatists and similar professionals play a role in any increased rate.

      You are so right Jack5. I have known a few people who have ended their lives and had zero expectation that they were tempted to do so. Suicide is an intensely personal act and fawning greasy liars like Jacinda clearly have no respect for that.

      The shoes represent lives lost to suicide. They are mostly provided by grieving families. I share your cynicism about JAs tears, but you are wrong to dismiss the message.
      Our Mental Health Services are oversubscribed and in total disarray.
      IMO:
      Ardern is a lightweight PR front with a lightweight team behind her. She’s promising nirvana for Mental Health as well as everything else. Do you trust them to get it right?
      English and his team are tried and tested. Most are solid but Coleman has been an arrogant disappointment. They chucked some extra cash at it, but that’s not all of the problem.

  As someone on my Facebook said yesterday, how about putting out 12,000 pairs of baby booties signifying how many babies were aborted last year in New Zealand? Jacinda wouldn’t shed a tear over that; in fact, her decriminalising of the abortion law will create even more dead babies, even allowing for abortion up to the point of childbirth.

  More likely a serious indication that her meds need revision or adjustment. Melancholy that prompts teary eyes is a symptom of depression as will be known to the thousands who suffer this ailment, known or not. The fact she has spoken openly about her fragile mental state goes a long way to understand her short fuse, shrieking response when under pressure and the drooping eyelids in the first debate. Sure the Media party are treating with kid gloves but they cannot protect her from so many other sources of pressure. IMO a meltdown is pending and she may not make it to the 23rd.

  She tried to make political mileage out of suicide by stating recently how deeply she was affected when her friend’s brother committed suicide. Ardent was 13 at the time. Tell you what, she’d have been over it and moved on by the end of the week like these school kids do. They love to get caught up in a drama I’ve observed.

Forgive me for reposting this from last night’s thread. Hugh gave me the idea..

The mood of the Jacindazilla meeting in Wellington’s St. James theatre yesterday reminded me more than anything else I’ve seen of the Hitler rallies in Germany in the early 1930s.
I don’t make this observation to try and compare the political ideologies on display, but more importantly to highlight the effect that a sharp salesperson has on influencing a shallow, unthinking populace.
What is being sold here is at best the same as what the dismal Angry Andy was peddling (and getting nowhere), and at worst a whole lot more destructive to the future of our country than even Angry could present.

    We now live with the consequences of that deal . A big part is the massive influx of Chinese migrants and their hot money. This has skewed the housing market.

    Phil you are partly right. And this is something that maybe National could have tweaked. Especially the part about property speculators making quick easy cash relative to more productive businesses. But already house prices are flattening as per the natural economic cylce. And there are 5 houses near my area that don’t appear to be selling. Interest rates are predicted to go back up to 8%. The problem with Jacinda is that she isn’t planning a tweak to one industry. It is the cumulative massive about face to our economy. She is planning to slam the rural sector with three new huge taxes. She is planning to curtail immigration and the economic growth that has come with that. She is planning to slow the overseas students and education sector. She is planning to radically slow the property sector. Her plan to replace this massive cuts to existing industries is to invent and innovate new farming technology that can be used overseas. So her plan for growth and to replace these sectors is a new invention that has yet to be invented yet. Yeah right. The question for voters is 1. our economy and country going in the right direction and need some steering and finessing (National), Option 2. or shall we do a massive handbrake turn and radically change our sectors and economy in an unproven “modelling” done by labour wonks and “university experts.” (Labour).

The falling value of the dollar will increase national debt made even worse as GDP falls. Even today she has signalled that the missing $11.7 billion is only the start. Quote from today.
        ‘ She conceded Labour would have to borrow more in the short term to pay to re-start contributions to the Super Fund, but said you could borrow at three (3) per cent and invest at 10 per cent. “It makes good sense.” Interest at 3% is a starting point but it will be a massive amount more than original amount when the dollar is in the 60s to the US$. This is classic Cullen thinking which is not unexpected since it is what would be fed to her from the party. Somebody has been filling this poor child with a lot of misinformation and most likely forgot to tell her about the loses the Cullen fund has sustained.         Bullshit again ztev. Auckland has blocked every move to stimulate house construction and the SHA have been ignored by them. It has prompted the new urban construction plan to bypass the RMA and get things moving despite ACC blocking progress. The regions are going gang busters as local bodies do their bit with the new SHA areas. The only limitation is finding construction workers. National say 50,000 more needed and Taxinda said 5000 in the second debate. It would not be half as bad if Labour had not rolled back the apprenticeship scheme. There are now 11,000 in apprenticeship training and a lot of those too are in the regions. You really do need to “hear” what Taxinda is saying and look beyond The Standard for facts.

    I’d emphasize the low interest rates. The major reason that most investors jumped into housing was that low interest rates created a bubble in asset prices and a lack of any returns in other investment options.
    
    Push up interest rates and the housing price bubble will burst, not that doesn’t bring its own problems.
    
    The key is that low rates (negative in some places !) were deliberately introduced to deal with other economic issues, but no policy is free of side-effects. Asset bubbles are one of the downsides of low rates. And having something like a capital gains tax makes little or no difference to the bubble, both Australia and Canada have CGT’s and both have had housing bubbles at least as bad or worse than Auckland/NZ. NZ has a de facto CGT in the IRD rules anyway.

      Bang on Ed Snack. The whole equation starts at the level of inflation with the RBNZ targeting a 1-2% band. The unintended consequences of Taxinda’s new taxes will have a devastating inflationary effect. The economy like the election is on a knife edge and even today Taxinda states quite candidly the Cullen fund will be restarted WITH MORE BORROWING. So the $11.7 billion gap just got boosted again and that is in the first 100 days. Even with the potential billions that will be added to taxes their borrowing will make that look like chump change. That is if we do not see even more taxes that they have not revealed. The starry eyed students might get “free” tertiary education but they will be paying for big time for a long time after they get to wear a cap and gown.

This election, due to some strange utterings by the sole ACT MP, I was open to ideas and prepared to change if another party came up with anything I saw as good for NZ.

Instead all I’ve seen is three left wing parties competing to give away my money to no-bloody-hopers.

Disillusioned does not cover it.

      In the 18th century there were very few ‘cultures’ which were so primitive as to not have developed as far as writing (let alone the wheel and all the other basics of life). Without writing, no ‘culture’ has a shit chance of achieving anything of value, which was one of the reasons the Maoris of the day so enthusiastically embraced European civilisation – and good on both the Maoris and the colonists for working together to build a country which became the envy of the world in many ways.

        The Russians have two adjacent letters in their alphabet, e and ё. Russians know the difference in pronunciation and typically only e is printed for both. Russians know from experience how to pronounce it as “e” or “ё” (something like yeah and yaw).
        
        For foreigners not proficient or comfortable in Russian (and perhaps for Russian children), however, publishers and printers use both e and ё.
        
        Why couldn’t Maori do the same? For New Zealanders, who with coming compulsory learning will all know the correction pronunciation of the word, leave it at “Maori”. Just use the macron when the word is in material for foreigners and for kids learning the language and needing help in pronunciation.
        
        Better still, reform the English language version of Maori words: Make it Ma-ori or better still Ma-oree; and so on.

I’m over Maori language week already. Two points:

1. The macron is unnecessary. Every Maori is absolutely familiar with the concept of words having the same spelling but different pronunciation, because they use such words many times a day in English.

2. It is very common for place names to have a different English pronunciation. If people are speaking English and someone starts pronouncing Paris, Berlin, or Mexico the way it is pronounced in its original language, others will most likely think that person sounds like a pretentious git. The same applies to Taupo or Whangarei.

    1. Use of a literal translation. Example “balls of vinegared rice with raw fish toppings”
    2. Loan of the Japanese word, but in italics. Example: sushi
    3. Once the loanword has “bedded into” English, the italicization is dropped and the term is now regarded as an English word. Example: sushi

Good to see Kiwis doing well in tennis again. A good story sadly under covered by the local media.

    I’m just pleased to see a Kiwi doing well on the international stage in tennis, whether it be singles doubles or mixed doubles. Apparently Michael Venus and his mixed doubles partner got to share $75,000 for making the final, a good payday for a hard-working professional.
    
    There was a time of course when we had a number of tennis players in the top hundred – Onny Parun, Brian Fairlie and Chris Lewis come to mind. The epic Davis cup matches against Australia and India with Parun and Fairlie representing New Zealand and the appearance of Chris Lewis playing John McEnroe in the Wimbledon final are great tennis memories.

This, the 16th anniversary of 9/11, it’s worth laying the facts of the matter on the table to judge whether or not this was a terrorist attack or an inside job:

1. The collapse of WTC7, the only steel framed building in history for which fire – and a very small fire at that – was allegedly the sole cause of its collapse. This preposterous explanation, taken to its logical conclusion would result in all such buildings throughout the country being closed down. None were. (And the collapse was described in graphic detail by the BBC twenty minutes before it happened!).

2. That Larry Silverstein, despite his “pull it” (a common term for a demolition) admission live on TV has never been called on to even explain his remark, let alone been charged with mass murder.

3. That the ‘dancing Israelis’, subsequently revealed to be Mossad operatives, openly admitted they were present on the day ‘to record the event’. 4. And one of my own favorites, the ‘terrorist passport’, miraculously surviving the plane explosion and subsequently found in perfect condition in the midst of thousands of tons of smoldering rubble.

Most people look at this evidence and, knowing that it is all correct will mentally reject it for to agree with it, would shatter their illusion of “democracy” and “America being the good guys” as all being nothing but a kabuki theatre designed to pull the wool over their eyes to hide them from the truth.

Listening to the newstalk ZB leaders breakfast has been hugely frustrating. It’s about 60% advertisements for a start but also she is once again getting a free ride. She completely dives questions and is not held to account. Where is the question on whether the water tax will be spent on roading (as Parker suggested it might be)? Where is the questions on whether she will have a zero budget outside of health/education? Where are the specific examples she should answer on land tax/capital gains tax? Where’s the questions on the ETS where people are complaining about a complete lack of detail? I can think of many more questions. Why are people not asking her to answer specific questions like this? I just can’t believe we are sleepwalking our way to electing someone without putting the pressure on them for their incredibly vague ‘policy’

Watching this campaign over the past few weeks for all the talk of “Goals” or “Values”, there is really an elephant in the room when it comes to Labour.

None of their policies seem to be “aspirational” at a personal level. They are all about the Government doing something for you.

There are a lot of communities/people out there that value personal aspiration and bettering their lot. The Labour manifesto either doesn’t value or trust that…..yes, I know….socialism etc. But I thought things had move on from that for most communities in NZ with one notable exception.

I grew up in a state housing area serviced by Decile 1 schools. However my parents were personally aspirational for me. I was first in wider family to go to University. I know live in Decile 10 area but remain aspirational for my sons.

I see no responsibility for personal aspiration in Labour’s policies.

If Binnie accepts that Michael Guest is telling the truth when he said David Bain told him and his co-counsel that he had been wearing those incriminating glasses on the Sunday night prior to the murders then he must also accept that when Bain told him he hadn’t been wearing them then Bain was lying to him. That being the case one would have thought that Binnie would have had the nous to realise that if Bain was lying to him about those glasses then he could well have been lying to him when replying to other questions he asked him, which of course he was.
I mean Bain told Binnie not to believe anything Mark Buckley said because he saw Buckley committing an act of a sexual nature with a goat. Buckley says he and a few mates were simulating having sex with a goat because they thought Bain was naive about sex.
In actual fact Buckley and his mates were wrong because Bain used to watch his parents having sex when the family lived in Papua New Guinea.

  Hi Michael. It’s relatively straightforward to set up your word processing programme, usually MS Word, to do this.
  On the insert tab, you can locate the correct symbol – the a with a macron over it. Use this to write Maori with a macron in it. Then find your autocorrect options. You might need the ‘help’ function for this. In the auto correct options, there is a table of words and punctuation that automatically correct if your write them wrongly. You can insert Maori there, and add your preferred option of Māori.

The Twelve Great Myths About Landlords and Their Rentals

Landlords Are Always Buying and Selling Property.
All property people are tarred with the term ’speculators’, and blamed for many of the ills of society. Landlords are seldom speculators. People who run bookshops do not buy and sell their shops. Similarly, Landlords seldom trade in property. What Landlords do is rent out accommodation. If they do ever sell, they obviously cannot run their accommodation business. Those people who do trade in property are traders, developers or renovators – not landlords, and are taxed on a different basis. I have been a landlord since 1992, and I have never sold an investment property.

Landlords are the Wealthy.
Public perception is that residential landlords are wealthy individuals who dress like the Monopoly Man and drive around in expensive limousines. Wrong. Over 90% of NZ landlords own just one or two rental properties. Thus when you attack and condemn landlords you are not attacking Google or Apple, you are actually criticising your next door neighbour, your plumber or your local school teacher.

It should All Be Free.
Politicians and social engineers are fond of promising benefits that are ‘free’. There is no such thing as free. Free means that it is being paid for by someone else somewhere else. When the call goes out for all sorts of upgrades and requirements the costs will eventually appear in the price that is paid by the end user. We would all like to live the luxurious life in mansions, but the reality for most of us is that we need to choose a life that we can afford. If the only cars that can be sold in the market are Rolls-Royces and Mercedes, what will the poor people drive?

Fairness is The Only Way.
Those on the public payroll often call out for things to be fair. Life is not fair, get used to it. Some people win Lotto, others get paid very little for performing vital work. Fairness is a highly nebulous concept, what appears fair to you may seem highly unfair to me and vice-versa.

Overheads? What Overheads?
Most tenants have never owned property. They firmly believe that the rent they pay goes entirely into the Landlord’s pocket and then is spent on overseas trips and flash cars. However, if you do own your own home, you will appreciate that the price of the house is actually only the down payment. Even without any mortgage burden the constant stream of bills for rates, insurance, water, and household services add up to a substantial and unavoidable sum each and every year. Even on a modest suburban house the first $80 or more of rent you pay each week goes straight back out of the landlord’s pocket to pay for these utilities.

Force The Bastards.
We’ll force them to . . . is a constant refrain. Force never works, at least not for long. Those with grey hair can remember back when the 1970s Labour Government tried to bring in a Maximum Retail Price scheme. Each item you bought would have an MRP figure printed on it, and could not be sold at a higher price. All that happened, of course, was that many items just disappeared off the shelves. If the supplier could not profit from selling it the manufacturers simply did not make it. Later on, they tried to ‘force’ property developers to do this and that. Again, a massive fail. Where are Universal and Beazley Homes these days?

Landlords are Lazy Parasites.
The man on the top of the mountain did not fall there. Hardly any of today’s Landlords woke up one morning to find – surprise surprise – that they had got a rental or two overnight without any effort. Acquiring an investment property and then renting it out is, for those of us who don’t win Lotto, a long hard self-sacrificing slog. Landlords, generally speaking, are hardworking, thrifty and goal orientated. These are the people that any sane society should cherish and reward, not vilify and punish.

Landlords And Their Tax Loopholes.
Landlords seek to make a profit by renting out a property. Their income is the rent they charge, and like any other business they can then deduct the costs involved before paying tax on that income. There are frequent demands for the tax loopholes that landlords enjoy to be removed. This never happens – for the simple reason that there aren’t any.
Back in 2007, at a Parliamentary Select Committee hearing, Deputy IRD Commissioner Robin Oliver was asked why people had the impression that there was some tax advantage in investments in rental housing. His reply was blunt: “The short answer is there are none.”

Landlords Should Be Charitable.
Landlords are frequently asked to ‘help’ their tenants. “Lower the rent you charge” they are told “and your tenants will then be able to afford the electricity to heat the place”. Quite why Landlords should effectively subsidise the power companies is never explained. Landlords are not WINZ. We pay taxes which fund WINZ, and no-one demands that petrol companies sell their fuel cheaper to the impoverished.

Tenants Have No Rights.
The Residential Tenancies Act was an attempt to be even-handed. Both landlords and tenants seem to think that it favours the other side, but the reality is that it does confer rights on tenants. Every time I see a solo mother of five crouched under a leaky roof with a bucket for a toilet I think “Why doesn’t someone tell her!”
If tenants don’t know about existing law, surely an educational program will work better than just inventing new and harsher laws?

Long Term Is The Best Term.
Long term tenancies is the current catch cry. They do it in Germany, why not here? Those who push this barrow always conveniently omit the substantial requirements that are imposed on those who enter into those tenancies. Like a teenager, they demand the benefits but don’t want to shoulder the obligations.

Hurt them Until Their Eyes Water.
Every Government action creates two after-effects. Costs go up and people alter their behaviour to avoid or minimise the effects of that action. Already, the recent demands put upon rental housing has removed from the market those many houses rented out by owner-occupiers who are off overseas for just a year or two. The expense of making the house compliant now exceed the return. Overtime, if the current trends continue, more and more landlords will sell up and retire.

Some see this as a welcome trend. I disagree. I make a profit out of my rentals, and the Government gets a share of that profit from the tax I pay. Conversely, Glenn has calculated that the Government makes an average loss of around $100 per week on every HNZ dwelling. The Government seems to be a poor and inefficient landlord.

Can our society afford to subsidize each and every tenant at this level if all private rentals are driven from the market?

Only time will tell.

Has a ‘private’ call from National authorised by some person in Wellington whose name I missed. The questions were, was I going to vote and how far was I from a polling station and what time would I vote. When I said late morning I was asked if they could ring back later in the afternoon on polling day. With private numbers you never know what you are getting. The caller was most certainly a young, very polite polynesian woman. The irony is somewhat is that if she was a volunteer for the National party she was supporting a belief in the National party to continue governing, yet on a blog supporting the National party she would read the specific racism exhorted here by a very vocal few most of who are not National party supporters but have no ‘home’ of their own to spit their vitriol. The only possibility that adds up as to the content of the call is that I should expect a ring after voting which asks who I voted for?

If the Nats want to stay in power they need to connect with more women The best way to do that is to do a “tearjerker” ad. The obvious subject – Labour’s promise to close charter schools.

Line up several sad-looking children saying “please don’t close our school” and go from there. Such an ad would win back enough women to keep the Nats in power.

Of course, the Nats have fools in control of their campaign so they will not do this.

This is basically what Steven Joyce said, but he was not reported properly.
It was either a hole or nothing allowed for further spending, but labour couldn’t have it both ways, is how I read Steven Joyce’s comment.

Why will anyone in the country save any money if they’re going to be hit with an inheritance tax?

How will millennials survive if they’re going to be taxed to hell, have to pay for 2 more years of boomer pensions, and have to pay for Gen X to go and get free interp dance degrees?

How well did Labour manage our 67k state houses in govt?

How will regions survive if, among other things, they need 200k workers and Labour is cutting off the immigration? Will Auckland benos on the legalised cannabis do those jobs?

Pick an issue. But the one that pisses me off most is the issue of Labour’s hole.

Economists in this country can all go to hell. Here is the context someone provided in Stuff comments.

In 2011 National allocated money to health/education and then had $900m operating allowance. For one year, that year. That was in the depths of the pit of global financial crisis. They faced an $18bn deficit most of which was a carry over of Labour’s 54% spending increase and $7b operating allowance increase in 2008, and they faced permanent, ever increasing deficits – forecasts of debt to GDP of 70% (vs 25% now) by early 2020’s and $14b per year interest payments.

Phil Goff and Ardern and Labour called it the ‘zero hope’, ‘zero future’ budget and said it would kill government services dead and lead to the death of poor people in New Zealand.

Well these people have run a fiscal plan where they have allocated money to health and education, and then left $900m operating balance for THREE FUCKING YEARS.

So in order for Labour’s numbers to work they have to run the most ruthless, vicious, harsh, brutal, neoliberal austerity this country has seen in decades. It’s much much more severe then National in 2011 which they said was cause people to die. It’s three times worse – as Hamish Rutherford pointed out.

And all these economist bastards have got up and said ‘there is no hole’.

Except Labour have to run budgets in 18/19 and 19/20 that belong to the ACT party. Actual massive cuts in government spending in real terms, for everything not health and education.

Who believes that Grant ‘spend it now’ Robertson is going to inflict massive austerity on his pet public service in 18/19, 19/20?

The degree of lies and sophistry from economists and the media on this issue is un believable.

It’s not just that there is an $11billion hole. Labour cannot keep key promises, like, fully erasing the median gender earnings gap (lifetime), introducing living wage in the public service, and putting together huge Kristine Bartlett pay deals for Nurses and ECE.

The degree of damage incoming to NZ is really quite amazing. It will be much worse then under Clark, and it will be impossible to unwind. See how unwinding the unions grip on the economy in Australia has gone.

I’ve really had my faith in the education levels of kiwis shaken. Particularly my own generation. If they vote for this carnage they can all get fucked.

I remember reading a report talking about Labour’s proposed CGT in 2011 was only expected to bring in $17.5m in the first year, raising to $3.7b 15 YEARS LATER. And these estimates were thought to be wildly optimistic and likely to be half this.

What taxes are included if at this point you have indicated what wont be taxed? Her reply in her usual flowery version of English “We’ve put it all out there for voters to see so that they know what we’ll do when we’re in office,” she said. She has put nothing out there at all but nobody dare ask for details.
English is the first and only language needed in NZ. Thankfully Bill English uses it well in the same economical way as he guided the economy. Under no circumstances would he borrow money for the Cullen fund as Taxinda has been directed to by Cullen.
For the sake of safety, security and stability in NZ going forward tick Two 4 Blue and give them time to work out a tax plan.

However it was topped by this comment on interest rates “Interest rates in NZ are nowadays largely determined by international forces that are beyond the control of either the government or the reserve bank. What the government can influence is inflation. And that in turn will affect the real interest rate: nominal interest rate – rate of inflation. So if the nominal interest rate is 6% and inflation is running at 5%, the real interest rate is 1%. I see savers being the losers in the short to medium term.”
Somebody is living in a bubble or has been drinking that has addled their brain. In the event that inflation moves above the RBNZ 1-2% band the OCR will begin to rise leading to banks increasing interest rates. Sure the RBNZ do not set bank interest rates but the increasing OCR will get them moving. There is nothing in the limited threat of a raft of taxes to indicate or calculate the increase in inflation and it may well rise to 5%. Were that the case interest rates will be well into double digits with so many homeowners struggling to service such a level. It may well have NZ again getting in front of another GFC that some negative pundits predict. That wild theory has little substance or fact to back it up since no OECD can get their interest rates up from the artificial low levels. However the low interest levels are lingering longer as the days, weeks, months, and even years tick by. The problem becomes even greater for little old NZ leading the field from internal economic and fiscal irresponsibility. Fiscal folly has already been signaled by Taxinda to begin in the first 100 days by borrowing to restart contributions to the Cullen fund. Apart from the $11.7 billion gap identified there is no mention of this “contribution” in the little Red book so yes it will have to be borrowed.
The bigger concern is the financial chain reaction that will follow such a drastic upheaval in domestic finances. While higher interest rates will attract the money traders buoyed by a rapidly falling exchange rate where a buck will get you two they will be looking beyond the pale. It also makes it a shaky currency for them to do anymore than flash by. That is to say buy, sell and bugger off quick. Meanwhile back home with an even more pricy latte disposable incomes will be shrinking from not just the inflation “bloom” but higher taxes starting to kick in. The chain reaction will first be seen in the level of national debt already scheduled to rise by $7 billion (see the Red book) since the devalued dollar is no match on the world market. The current $60 odd billion will become $70 before Taxinda can attach a pair of braces to her knickers even before new borrowing is added. Naturally the rapid rising inflation will see some heavy wage demands’ from strengthened unions after the public servants and contractors get a living wage. This pushes up the median wage which provides the basis to calculate those poor little darlings living in poverty. It’s OK though because the tooth fairy will pass a law to END CHILD POVERTY. For those who were still a twinkle in daddy’s eye back in the day the biggest driver of inflation was the “wage/cost spiral” fuel by the same fluffy thinking we hear on the hour from the tooth fairy. Thanks to the Media party. They too are starting to wake up and speculate about how much it might cost them. Too little too late you morons. You can take full credit for the devastation this shallow creature will bring down on you.
