      Another electoral truism simo. It is in fact a flip-flop on an earlier flip-flop. The other truism is that changing leaders too close to an election is often fatal.
      Thankfully they panicked and made their move too soon giving plenty of time for Taxinda to rise up rapidly. It has given enough time for her to be exposed as only great for Labour for a short time and not a long time. Her “vision” she worked so hard to sell has been exposed as a mirage visible to her alone. It is not unusual for people who suffer from anxiety disorders to have visions. Pigs that fly and pink elephants are most common.

The venting about Bryan Bruce’s ‘documentaries’, their quality and cost is quite understandable. DPF questions why NZ On Air continues to fund Bruce, but this kind of misses the point.

The point is this.

NZ On Air documentaries don’t get funded unless a broadcaster makes an iron clad agreement to broadcast it first.

In this case, it’s TV3. That’s one thing, but TV3’s timing is also in question here.

So, who commissioned the documentary, and who programmed it? These are the shadowy figures that ought to be questioned, as they are clearly partisan. If one were pro- the incumbent, one would bury Bryan Bruce off peak in January.

        So let me understand your logic: someone works their arse off, builds up some assets then takes care of those assets and they make some gains – they are privileged.
        
        The people who do bugger all and piss away their income instead of saving it and investing it, but get the benefits of someone else’s efforts through CGT are not privileged.

        Care to explain why assets generating rental revenues and subject to market pricing variations should be discriminated against relative to assets generating dividend revenues and subject to market pricing variations? Or are you inferring that all capital gains should be taxed in order to broaden the tax base and lower tax rates generally?

    Not having seen the documentary, I might be repeating points already made.
    
    For some years NZ has had very rapid population growth from various sources, not just China, including NZers returning from well-paid overseas jobs; land supply has not grown rapidly, particularly in immigrants’ principal destination city; part of NZ’s building industry has been diverted to Christchurch’s reconstruction; mortgage rates are low. Even if China did not exist, our house prices would have inflated.

    I’ll tell you how ‘greedy and privileged’ I am. I worked long hours until my fifties, investing as best I could. I’m now too sick to work full time, but run a little home business. I have a small rental property, with excellent long term tenants.
    
    My net income is far lower than median income, but I manage and don’t ask for handouts.
    
    Labour wants to add a land tax to my rental and maybe to the ‘business’ part of my home. Labour wants to take cgt if I need to sell the rental or my home [home business cgt was their policy before] so that I would never be able to buy again in the same market.
    
    Maybe I’d then be able to apply under Labour for some relief to bring my income back up to minimum? Probably not, because the bureaucracy to administer all their taking and giving would use a huge chunk of the tax.
    
    Many Mum and Dad rental owners will be in a very similar situation.

        I made a comment yesterday about JA overmedicating herself so much so that she was all over the place like a blowfly all over a turd. Sam Green jumps on me calling me names and also suggests I’m a ‘paid shill’ when he disagrees with me which is almost every time. I thought I’d better tone it down so used the blowfly analogy so I’m rather surprised Sam Green (who I’ve suggested maybe Clarke Gayford in real life) hasn’t jumped on you starboard. Lucky you. But I really wanted to say what you’ve just said but thought I’d be slightly more ladylike instead. It seems that since the Christchurch debate where Jacinda took the gloves off and turned into a screaming shrew, she can’t poke that genie back in the bottle and that is her Achilles heel imo. Also, another point I’d like to trip her up on is at exactly which point she knew of Andrew Little’s resignation. She says she only knew an hour before. I’m suggesting she knew the evening before. As for her “relentlessly positive” campaign. Pfft!!! It’s turned into a campaign based on negative finger wagging, screeching and intimidation tactics, crocodile tears and flip flops.   I asked the teacher to teach us fly fishing, but they wouldn’t do that. And there are a hell of a lot more flyfishers in NZ than fluent Te Reo speakers.
  
  There are countless resources out there to learn everything from abseiling to xylophone playing. You don’t need to be spoonfed in a school.

So what I’d like to know from the ‘transparent one’ is how did Grandad get there in the first place? And did they dump him off and go home because it was too long to wait with him to be seen?     New Zealand’s GDP per capita has grown for each and every year of National’s leadership despite GFC, two+ costly natural disasters.

        I feel sorry for that Christchurch lady who is homeless and whose baby died in the earthquake but she herself admits that she didn’t pay her rent and caused damage to the property and does not have care of her other children, what does she expect?
        
        It would seem to me that those things are not all since the earthquake.

        waikatogirl makes a fair point Muttonbird. Have you ever sunk your own money into a business so you could employ people and put food on their tables? Or have you spent your life working for “the man” and resenting every minute of it.
        
        If SWMBO and I had not decided to set up our own business 14 years ago, we’d have far more cash in the bank now than we currently have. We’d have far less stress too, and we wouldn’t be working 70 hours on a quiet week.
        
        And we wouldn’t have to be worried at the prospect of a Labour government imposing a Capital Gains Tax that would penalise us for building up not one, but seven companies from scratch, if we ever decided to sell.

She runs a hugely successful business which we sunk our own money into, we run a small horticultural holding which we sunk our money into and which provides consistent seasonal employment for people, we have rental property and I manage a small NGO.         KS. It is interesting to note that the tax changes from Budget 2017 (Bill English’s masterstroke 11) was targeted at low and middle income earners. No change for the big earners. A sort of leftie friendly option which eliminated ANY claim of a rich pricks tax cut.
        Even with this tax cut locked in by law Robbo insists there will be no INCREASE in income tax. Having learnt arithmetic by rort we know that he is lying. If you get a reduction of $1060 with a lower tax rate it is your pocket. Cancel that tax reduction means it will be in Robbo’s pocket. Pretty basic.
        Also some students with even tax free loans are doubly pissed off with Labour. While those they might compete with down stream for jobs get their free ride. They on the other hand loose $1060 every year that could help pay off their loan. There it is again the law of unintended consequences. The song “Some girls do and some girls don’t” springs to mind.

      The richer ones are those mostly paying tax in this country. I’m a pensioner raising a family–do you think I pay a net tax contribution? I even get family tax credits, accomodation supplement and invalidity benefits. The amounts are relatively generous considering the budget. We cannot expect the taxpayers to support the non-working community Rolls Royce style.
      
      Be very pleased we have taxpayers. Previously many went overseas and they are feeling twitchy again. Government is about the possible not the the wishful. Taxes at present are borderline tolerable and internationally roughly comparable. Corporate tax is only 28% and distributions from companies get that credited back to the individuals. We have arrived at a finely tuned tax system which provides efficient collection. That could be ruined in a few months by an amateur government or union takeover,
      
      Expect revolt if the legislated budget changes are revoked.

        One Kev to another and you put that so well and economically you can handle your cash and brevity of word too.
        Living offshore on a tax free pension it is a veritable fortune compared to many near and far here. It has seen it being even more beneficial as the exchange it sees it boosted by the equivalent of NZ$100 every 4 weeks.
        Being away does not mean being less concerned for what is happening at “home”.
        The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have stated categorically that NO NEW TAXES are required. They have illustrated that by REDUCING income taxation to kick in on April Fool’s Day 2018. Not because they feel foolish but they feel compelled to get tax rates DOWN to share the economic gains out to everybody.
        IMO they are even looking at other ways in which the tax burden can be minimised for wage and salary earners. This is what is keeping Judith Collins so busy utilising her considerable understanding taxes and loving it. We know her for her ability in the house but her expertise is being maximised in her own speciality as an individual and her ministerial position. We are getting and will get great value for her time on this task.
        The difference between forecast surplus and actual surplus was huge and is a fair indication that the Government has room to review tax rates. The devil is in the details but it might yet pave the way for Steven Joyce to bring us his first master stroke economical moment. Don’t be swayed by his ready smile as he is just a happy guy doing something he is well capable of doing.
        NZ is in a unique position of leading the OECD out of GFC and building a strong vigorous economy to the envy of other countries. IMO it is a performance that will be added to future lessons of economics learning.
        Suspect there will be even bigger revolts than you allude to if Labour again fail to fire at the poll on 23rd. So what new they are doing their level best to cripple our country.
        Bring it on faster by ticking Two 4 Blue while dreaming of where your tax savings will be spent.

    Just reading Grant Robertson’s speech from the Hansard link above, and I am sure the irony of this comment will not be lost on many here:
    
    The other five-sevenths, $1.9 billion next year, is in tax cuts. These are tax cuts that are not about inflation adjustment, and they are not about so-called bracket creep. They are a straight out election-year bribe—$1.9 billion of unfocused, irresponsible tax cuts.
    
    Robertson’s Wikipedia profile reveals this:
    
    Robertson returned to New Zealand during the first term of the Fifth Labour Government to work as a Ministerial advisor to Minister for the Environment Marian Hobbs and later Prime Minister Helen Clark. During his time in Clark’s office, Robertson was rumoured to have the nickname “H3” during the 2005 general election (H1 being Clark, and H2 being Clark’s Chief of Staff Heather Simpson).[8]
    
    As a senior staff member in Helen Clark’s office, Robertson would have been very close to the action when Labour promised interest-free student loans at the 11th hour and 50th minute to narrowly win the 2005 election.   Committing a future administration to changes such as this based on political philosophy is a smart move by National.
  To cancel the tax reduction will, presumably, require another law to be passed giving the Opposition a platform to kick up a fuss.
  Labour did something similar with the Nuclear Free legislation except that was even more effective and has tied the hands of various governments ever since who don’t dare attempt to recind that law.

The years old Saudi sheep affair, shoving the Gisborne apple lady on air and feeding her encouragement and leading questions. Not challenging her that minimum wage rise has been 3% per annum while CPI has been 1.8% same period. Attack on Nats Landcorp lease to own for young farming families policy, repeating verbatim of Grant Robertson’s back down on tax just to make sure voters get the message from Labour, sorry I mean RNZ independent state broadcaster

        Actually gabby, Ms Provost was appointed as Assistant Commissioner of Police in 2001, by the Clark administration. She served in that role for eight years before being appointed Auditor-General in 2009 by National, a position she held for a further eight years.
        
        That she was considered by both Labour and National administrations as being worthy of senior public service roles suggests that she was a high calibre, politically neutral individual. She deserves better than you casting snide, anonymous smears.

        Interestingly, it happened on the afternoon that several National MP’s including my good friend Chester gave their valedictories. I was on my way from the public gallery to the after-match in National’s caucus room when I saw the media scrum in the foyer outside the Debating Chamber, and a subdued looking Ms Ardern making her entrance to address them.

Ok, the horses mouth has spoken. James Shaw from the Green Party has had a happy little dialogue with Guyon from RNZ. The gist of this is that if the Greens are in the mix, they expect that they will have ministerial warrants. So, what does this mean? It means, as I pointed out last night, that I will be kept awake because…James Shaw as Minister of Revenue, Turea as Min of Social Welfare. Probably the American (Jenter I think) as Transport and a push for carbon neutrality. Don’t start me on the carbon fairy tale. And…40% tax rate. So the Labour pledge of no tax increase can quietly disappear out the door because Cindy can say “they made me do it”.

Lloyd Burr won’t be getting a Christmas card from Jacinda Ardern’s office:

Labour leader Jacinda Ardern cancelled her planned visit to Canterbury’s Selwyn River on Thursday because it was “flooding” – but problem was, it wasn’t flooding at all.

She intended to use Coe’s Ford to highlight the party’s pledge to clean up rivers. This part of the Selwyn River is often used as an example of how farm runoff is affecting the health of waterways.

Ms Ardern’s office pulled the plug on the visit, with a message to media saying: “With regret we have had to cancel the Coe’s Ford media event with Jacinda Ardern, due to flooding”.

However when Newshub arrived, the river wasn’t flooded or flooding at all.

Oh dear; so much for promising never to tell lies. But wait, as they say in the informercials, there’s more:

A number of local farmers had gathered at the site too, after hearing on the radio Ms Ardern would visit. One of them was David Birkett.

“It’s a little bit disappointing. It would have been a good opportunity to talk to her about some of her policies,” he says.

“Labour has made a big hoo-rah about the Selwyn River, and one of the reasons she’s not here is probably because it’s looking really good at the moment.”

Mr Birkett claimed the water was so clean that he’d drink it. Newshub asked him to prove it, and he did.

So tell us the truth Ms Ardern. Did you cancel yesterday because the Selwyn River was flooded, or were you avoiding the very farmers you are planning to tax the bejesus out of?

Bill English might have copped a telling-off from packhouse workers in Gisborne yesterday, but at least he fronted up and didn’t make up a cock-and-bull story to avoid them.

Ms Ardern; you can’t avoid irate farmers forever.

The tax issue and what has ben mentioned so far is on the table, no new taxes that haven’t been mentioned before the working group and 2021.
However, taxes have already been mentioned so they must be on the table.
It is all in the wording of Press releases.
CGT has been mentioned
Inheritance tax has been mentioned
Water tax has been mentioned
Land tax has been mentioned
Fuel tax
Emissions tax
Income tax
ALL the above have been mentioned during the electioneering. So therefore they are all still on the table.

Apparently Ms Ardern was playing fairy god mother yesterday. Her convoy was returning to Christchurch from Greymouth via Arthur’s Pass and was held up by a rock fall.

Thankfully she had a boot full of chocolates left over from bribing Greymouth school kids to meet and greet her so she walked down the row of waiting vehicles handing them out.

Doesn’t that warm the cockles of your heart. Such a caring wee thing.

Labour rejects Mr Birkett’s claim it cancelled the visit because the river wasn’t dirty enough for the photo op, instead saying it was an honest mix-up based on information from a security check of the area beforehand.

I’m worried about this election. It’s all very well for commenters to point out (rightly) that Adern is full of hot air and light on details, but that doesn’t seem to be affecting the ordinary ~~man~~ gender neutral being on the street, judging by the poll results.

There are always things to criticise a government for (I’ve been incorrectly labelled a ‘leftie’ for not supporting charter schools, for example). But no government is perfect and there will always be areas of disagreement. However, the fact remains that National have steered this country admirably through financial crisis and earthquakes and it would be a fucked up mess under a Labour gummint.

I only hope the electorate comes to its senses next Saturday and returns National despite all the media bias that we’re seeing. If so, it will be a miracle and after a decent pause, BE should be knighted and then put back into the backroom role he does so well, in favour of someone with some you know, umm… errr… media ability.

I was particularly interested in some woman moaning to Bill English that the Minimum wage had only gone up $3.50 or so in the last 9 years, and how would he feel after only having that much of an increase an hour after 9 years.

If she is only still on the minimum wage after 9 years, I would suggest the problem is more hers than Bills!!

Meanwhile, in Australia, local councils are cancelling ‘Australia Day’ because it’s racist and Nazi-like.

A third council in the city of Melbourne has moved to cancel Australia Day celebrations, arguing the country’s national day is offensive for indigenous people.

Australia Day is celebrated Jan. 26 every year to mark the anniversary of Britain’s First Fleet’s arrival in 1788. The Moreland City Council in Melbourne voted Wednesday to remove all references of the date as Australia Day. One councilor called the ceremonies “grossly offensive” while another compared it to Germany celebrating its Nazi past.

“It would be like celebrating the Nazi holocaust,” Socialist Alliance councillor Sue Bolton said during the meeting, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports.

The government condemns the cancelation and it moved to ban citizenship ceremonies in the two other communities that passed similar bills last month. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has previously described the cancellations as “utterly out of step” with Australian values.

“The Turnbull government strongly condemns comparisons of Australia Day with the Nazi Holocaust as deeply offensive to all Australians,” Alex Hawke, the federal assistant immigration minister, said in a statement. “Already we have stripped councils of the right to administer citizenship where they have violated the Australian citizenship ceremonies code.”

The cancellations coincide with a string of attacks against monuments of James Cook, the first European to explore and chart Australia’s east coast. The Turnbull administration has asked the Heritage Council to include statues on the National Heritage List, which would penalize vandalizations with hefty fines and up to seven years in jail.

  Fletch, the Aussie’s have only got themselves to blame for the reactionary councils and the major challenges they face. Just remember the council or government is a reflection of the region or country (which is watered down by those who can’t be bothered to vote). That’s democracy in action! The same can be said for NZ. If we have a Labour, Green, Maori party government then that is the democratic process is action. What you end up with is a different set of circumstances and rules to work with but by and large, it is survivable. If you reflect on the previous 20 odd years we have had great stability and have waxed and waned around the centre of the spectrum. This possible new world order-Labour, Greens, Maori will take us further left than we are probably comfortable with. Either we get out and vote to reject this notion (or confirm it). But it is what it is and we’ll need to suck it up and get on with it (either group).

      She will get some form of parliamentary pension, dependant on when she entered parliament and her length of service, but it won’t be anything near a full salary.
      I don’t know about the travel perks, but I think they were phased out quite some time ago.

      The trench warfare thing is a funny one. No Maori claimed to have ‘invented it’. James Belish essentially made this claim in his book on the New Zealand Wars.
      What does appear to be the case is that Maori successfully adapted their existing styles of fortifications to incorporate bomb-proof dugouts, communication trenches and musket pits. It doesn’t appear that there was an European guidance in this. I understand the British made a model of one of the pa in the northern War, but it is doubtful that this had any great significance in the development of military science.
      A rhetorical claim more than anything else.

  I can’t imagine that China, Russia, US, UK, Australia or anyone else would tolerate someone regularly firing ballistic missiles over the top of them – let alone the only country in the world that has suffered a previous nuclear strike, as the Japanese have.
  
  How can anyone justify leaving the Japanese to suffer ongoing missiles and warnings to the population to head for shelters?

    The Japanese head for shelters more often than you think. They are used to it.
    When there is an earthquake, sensors pick up the P-wave, and an automated warning goes out instantaneously to all mobile phones in that area (you get about 10-15 seconds to react before the earthquake arrives).
    
    These North Korean missiles are business as usual. (It is thoroughly pissing off the Japanese population, though, and will encourage public support for Mr. Abe (pronounced “Ah-bay”) who is a hawk.

      Because you have been so nice, I’ll even answer yours. As I understand it, the scheme in Tamaki is to remove a bunch of run down, unsuitable existing state houses and replace them with a mixture of new public and private housing. Essentially, the sale of some (most?) of the land for development is intended to fund the development of more state housing units than existed before.
      
      I think any request for information should be responded to in a way that helps the public to know whether those objectives are being met.
      
      As to withholding information on commercial grounds, this is okay where there is a genuine concerns that releasing such information would prejudice a commercial position. I should note that such a decision to withhold information is subject to a balancing test of any overriding public interest. If you are not satisfied with the response, you could request the Ombudsman to review it.

NZ is going to become more like Scandinavia, says Christchurch Press reporter Martin van Beynen who has been touring the country talking to people.

He’s picking an Ardern win, and his article includes this conclusion:

Under her, we can see the country becoming less male orientated, more diverse and tolerant (ironically she stands for less immigration), more open to changes like the legalisation of cannabis and euthanasia and less blaming of the poor and dysfunctional. Ardern stands for Māori language and redistributing money from the financially comfortable to the battlers and the losers.
She stands for a New Zealand that some will see as painfully politically correct and others will regard as less derogatory or patronising of people traditionally seen as different.

In other words, a country that is more Scandinavian than American or Australian.

If van Beynen is correct, coming up will be three great years for right-wing bloggers, ripping into the PC, compulsory Maori language, and general sickly socialism.

But New Zealand like Sweden? Taxed to the eyeballs to finance welfarism; swamped with Third World immigrants; welcome-homes for ISIS volunteers; dark, dark psyches reflected in the thrillers of writers like Henning Menkell, Stieg Larsson, Jo Nesbo, and Mari Jungstedt?

Five hundred posts for General Debate is in sight. Here’s an offering to keep the pot boiling….

An interesting report in Stuff details the important influence of Maori in the rise of rugby in NZ. It quotes well known sports writer Ron Palenski.

He is quoted as saying Tom Ellison, a lawyer and member of the Maori (or “Natives”) team to tour Australia in 1888, persuaded the the NZ Rugby Football Union to adopt a black uniform for the national team.

But when did the name “All Blacks” arise? A report in the Otago Daily Times two years ago, sourcing from an associated publication Southland Express, quotes the last surviving player of the national rugby team tour of Britain in from that tour, Billy Wallace.

He apparently said the team name came about because a London newspaper reported the New Zealanders played as if they were ”all backs” and, apparently due to a typographical error, in subsequent references called them ”All Blacks”.

The Stuff report also mentions as one of the pioneer Maori players Billy Stead, who represented NZ from 1903 to 1908.

The Otago Daily Times report says Stead was the son of the Mayor of Invercargill from 1898 to 1899 and 1917 to 1921, John Stead, whose name is memorialised in several Invercargill structures. Billy Stead, who was born in Invercargill in 1877, was one-eighth Maori. His maternal great-grandmother, Hine Kaitoki, of Ngati Kahungunu, in Hawkes Bay, married a Yorkshireman about 1837.

Chelsea Manning, previously Bradley Manning, who went to prison for espionage after leaking military documents, is still in the headlines.

This time its about Harvard University rescinding a visiting fellowship it had bestowed on her. This after the director of the CIA cancelled an appearance at the university.

The Guardian reports:

“I now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a visiting fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility,” said the dean of the Kennedy School, Douglas Elmendorf.

It so happens that Reid has posted his name and phone number on Kiwiblog – a long time ago – and I’m not linking to those comments.

It’s unlike Reid not to comment for a while so, as one often does in these situations, I’m wondering about the what-ifs and hoping he’s ok.

  It’s a tough one Nosty. People on here have had hundreds of interactions with others yet we could walk past each other the street and not turn my head.
  
  What makes it odd is that he has been an institution on this blog for such a long time – I’ve read Kiwiblog for nigh on a decade before joining in 2014 and tbh, and the ones I recalled from those early days were Pete George, Redbaiter and Reid.
  
  The former 2 have left to write their own blogs while Reid has left without a note. Hopefully he’s just taking a break – following and commenting on news in the crazy world we live in can be tiring. Hopefully hes just taking some time off to smell the roses as we should all do once in a while.
  
  Give him a call Nosty, no-one ever minded being checked up on to see that everythings OK. What’s the worst he can say – “thanks mate for the phonecall, everythings OK, after 12 years I’ve decided to take a break from blogging”.

  My concern is that if Jian Yang worked at Chinese military institutions, he will view them and the people who work there as his friends and associates. If need be, he will easily be able to contact them.
  
  Do you really think that once you stop working at a military institution, they stop contacting you and leave you alone? Hell, I did a post-graduate degree at the University of Auckland a decade ago and to this day they periodically e-mail me for contributions and to see how I am getting on. For what its worth… it has to be true but not confirmed.

Spoke to a hard core labour retired coal miner from Greymouth. Strong supporter of Damien O’Connor but very wary of Ardern.

Apparently there has been a mutiny on the good ship Labour. The crew were very concerned about the Captain making her “captains call” concerning tax. Whilst she was out of town on the coast someone thought to be Grant phoned her and gave her the message to can it. She was really pissed and angry.

Although Kelvin is the deputy it is just a title as Grant is the power behind the throne. After the election that my contact was confident Labour would win, Grant will strike.

I was told that Captain is just a popular front with the power players behind pulling strings. I asked if the unions are involved and how long has the Captain got and was told… watch this space.

Look at the security needed at Berkley just because conservative Ben Shapiro is going to speak there. Helicopters in the sky, police, concrete barriers, transit has been shut down etc. Anyone would think he was a highly controversial speaker, but he isn’t.

Went for a drive today, coming home Marcus Lush on ZB talkback tonight. Give 16yr old the vote, he says. The problem is they all indroctunated by all the screaming lefties 8n the school system! If you are giving the vote, what about all the rest, getting married, adult justise and prison, getting a gun, military conscription, having a mortgage and so the list goes on.

Ok I know the Guardian is a lefty paper but it’s now beyond ridiculous. Even the Herald makes some attempt to cover both sides. Author Eleanor Roy is front page today with – Article 1: Jacinda, “I’ve got what it takes to be the Next Prime Minister” in depth Jacinda and video. Article 2, Jacindamania has lifted Labour into Poll lead, Article 3. New Zealand gripped by Jacindamania as polls soar , Article 4. Jacindamania spreads as Corbyn backs Jacinda 5. Rocketing Rise why Jacinda could be the next rock star politician . Well you get the idea. There’s about 9 sycophantic articles and videos of Jacinda without any coverage of the issues, or the National party it’s leader or the policies. The only article about Bill on the Guardian is a single article about secret recordings. It’s just rockstars and stardust and global media telling you how to think and there’s only one way to think. So only worth telling you about one candidate.
