The Maori Party? Almost…

The Maori King Movement/Kingitanga. Demonstrated that they are a 19th Century relic with little or no influence, political, social, spiritual or otherwise in the lives of Maori.

They made the Maori Party kiss the ring, and now Te Ururoa Flavell and Marama Fox are gone. Nanaia Mahuta may be derided in these parts, but any MP who, in the face of criticism from her close whanau can increase her majority by over 7,000 shows she must be a good local MP for her constituents. Likely the Tainui of Hamilton view the court in Ngaruawahia as fat cats from whom they receive little bounty. A bigger fail than Gareth Morgan’s $3 million, as at least he has something else to which to go back…

    Say what you will, but by any reasonable standard Te Ururoa Flavell is a giant compared to the light-weight mini-me male Maori version of Jacinda, Tamati Coffey. Happy to be proved wrong, but as Maori seats tend to be a sinecure for Labour MPs, I predict if he is there for some 20+ years, his parliamentary career will amount to very little.

        What I especially hate about the Maori Party is they go on and on about abuse in state care many years ago…obviously in order to claim compensation. ..but you NEVER hear them talk about the abuse that goes on NOW in Maori homes all over the country.

      But some 6 weeks ago Labour were looking like imploding to below 20%. Never under-estimate your opponent, or, as per Sean Fitzpatrick, fail to give them credit where it is due. If Peters goes into government with National, and with the Greens neutered, she will be the undisputed leader of the opposition with all the limelight that entails. Her personality projects well, now let’s see if she can learn from her mistakes – and her party’s!

        Nobody in MSM dared mention her past (“Comrades,Comrades..”)

Only needs a shift of some 1 in 20 Kiwis next time to put them over the top. Write her off as media hype if you will – and yes, there was hype, and being media-friendly is maybe her only talent, and she will likely be exposed in the next three years in the hard grind of Leader of the Opposition

  The thing with TOP is that it set out to have a policy on everything. So it ended up upsetting everyone. I stopped listening when I saw Gareth’s giant face with the caption “Rich picks should pay more tax”.
  
  I agreed with some of their policies. I think the Morgan Foundation did some good work on health policies. But at the end of the day older voters just saw an ugly man coming for the house. And younger voters did not have the attention span for the policy details. Not when the could have feels and values instead.

  AfD, Alternative for Germany, is now Germany’s 3rd largest party. They are shunned by all the others, because the MSM keeps labeling them ‘far right’ and worse. They are no such thing. They are concerned that a huge number of ‘refugees’ in the recent mass migration have no ID but are clearly not from Syria but just economic immigrants. AfD want a proper immigration points system, similar to Canada or Australia. Wanting this gets you called ‘far right’ in Germany.
  
  As for ‘antisemitism’ and ‘misogyny’: AfD is the only party that recognises that a certain growing theocratic trend with this mass migration is antisemitic, misogynistic and homophobic. They don’t want this ideology to spread further. There are parts of cities where now women don’t feel safe. Also homosexual couples {including the AfD lesbian co leader Alice Weidel and her partner}, and Jewish people identifying themselves in their attire.

Given that we are due for another economic downturn (9-10 year cycles, and all that), it is likely that Labour and the Greens will be able to fulfill precisely none of their promises.

    I am not sure what name she may be using. Small glimmer of hope, there are only 53,504 people living in Waterford. It is difficult to talk to people in organisations about someone even with the name because of confidentiality, a position that I understand.
    
    There is a whole lot more reasons that preclude the authorities being involved, none of them malicious, all to do with the possible outcome for my daughter, all stemming from a parent using the children as a weapon in proceedings.
    
    My sixpennth worth for anyone involved in proceedings involving your children, my Dads4 hat; win the first argument at any cost as all decisions reached thereafter by the Courts, will stem from the initial decision. If that decision is flawed, every subsequent decision is also flawed as the findings are built on that decision as no Judge wants to show up another member of the fellowship as a fuckknuckle.
    
    If you think a barrister is too expensive, you will find out that not having one is more expensive.

    Turei maintained her Electorate candidacy because when she lost, she automatically became eligible for three months salary (circa $40,000) as a defeated sitting MP. If she had withdrawn from running for a seat, she would have been deemed to have resigned and no golden hand-shake for her.
    
    That is the ONLY reason she did not withdraw her candidacy.

      Wrong. A MP who does not seek re-election at a general election is entitled to three months pay as from election day – the same as a sitting MP who is unsuccessful in the election. So she gained nothing pay-wise from standing for an electorate (and indeed was probably $300 out of pocket with her deposit).

  If MMP worked properly this would be the way. It would give the strongest party choices for its coalition partner. The strongest party could not be held to ransom.
  In other words Winston Peters would not be in the box seat, either with National or Labour. The majority of voters would then get mostly what they had voted for with few concessions.
  Just imagine NZ First and the Greens in the same position.
  Well in fact they are with National, it could be one or the other.
  I hope Bill English makes the calls to both parties and see how it goes. He might not have to “give” so much.

    And that there is the problem. MMP is a terrible form of electoral representation. It’s a con job. It delivers a sham of electorate representation, covered up by the idiocracy of PR.
    
    Three times in 20 years a loon has been put in the position of determining the government of the nation.
    
    Think about that! This is the third time, a government will have to wait for Winston’s pleasure.

    Well here NZ is, in the “Fool me thrice” situation. We have no one to blame but ourselves. We could have voted to get rid of this stupidest of electoral systems but we didn’t and fuck me if at the very next election we aren’t in the very same situation as 1996 and 2005 with Winston holding the balance of power.
    
    Shame on NZ for voting to keep MMP, it has fooled us for a third time!
    
    Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

      I agree MMP is not working with our small population (it seems) however it is what we have got and we have to make the best of it. Perhaps the electorate needs to become more sophisticated and only vote for National and Labour and thus do away with the need for MMP. Make it a 2 horse race.
      Well that might be in our dreams, people never behave the way you or I might want them to. That is the beauty of democracy, but also in this case its problem, because in actual fact democracy is not working as it should. The majority are not in a position to govern without compromising what they want. AND the compromise is not something that the voters have a say in.
      STV but National and Labour interfered with the original outcome of the MMP vote. People wanted change, but they actually wanted a say in that change and they were never given the right to choose between the different voting systems.

        I certainly voted for MMP. Don’t forget that 85% voted to change the system from FPP, and 65% voted MMP cf. 16% for STV, 6% for PV and 5% for SM.
        
        And as a system to get a consensus of voter preferences it works. My first preference would have been a National/Act coalition. As that’s not possible, it lookS like my second choice, a National/NZF coalition is likely. Good result.
        
        I laugh at every election result where the whiners complain that everything would be fine if only we changed the electoral system, or if only the voters weren’t so stupid. Under democracy we get the government we deserve, and if after 3 years we don’t like it we can change it.
        
        In the meantime, aren’t blogs so much more fun when people are pissed off. Imagine how boring blogs must be in North Korea, with their perfect leader.

Just after 9.00 am .on a Radio Station doing a post mortem on the election results. James Shaw from the waste of space “green” party was being interviewed.
Question .Opportunity here to go with National Party in coalition. Shaw all most outraged ,to be asked such a question. No way, No way, No way.
What an indictment of a so called party for the enviornment called “greens”,showed their true colours. They were in Parliament for the massive taxpayer millions sitting in judgement under a so called MMP system .Not there for the good of NZ only there to scam and scrounge off the taxpayer.
Not sure why Materialistic Turei had to cut and run. The only difference between her and the “green party” she admitted to stealing off the taxpayers of NZ.To think after being in Parliament for 21 Years leeching off the NZ Taxpayer,what have they accomplished ,other that refusing to imitate their name “Greens” and live up to their myth of enviornment protection.
James Shaw was just handed the opportunity to deliver and be a real “Green” party with a coalition with National Party and serve the long suffering NZs taxpayer. Just for once do something useful.
Like the coward he and the Party of “Green “bludgers and the no hopers he represents the answer was NO! NO! NO!.

  Seems James has indicated that if Bill gives him a call, he would not hang up in Bill’s ear. This is actually a start. James is either very naive or is very cunning. He cannot be seen to be cuddling up to National at this stage (there would be a storm of outrage from some in his party) but yet there are enormous potential advantages for the Greens if they bargain with National even if they finally do not do a deal. Winston has decided to go fishing for a few days presumably as he feels confident that James and Bill would not reach any deal in his absence. This could well be a blunder on Winston’s part, possibly the first of several. If I were in Winston’s shoes I would recognise that a government could be potentially formed behind my back (even if unlikely) and would want to kick off discussions today (if not yesterday).
  Similarly if I was in Jacinda’s shoes I would not totally discount the possibility of the Greens going with National and be prepared to accommodate the Greens more than Helen Clark did.
  The Greens hold the key to Winston’s bargaining strength – the Greens could make life miserable for Winston and greatly diminish his bargaining strength even if they have no intention of getting into bed with National at the end of the day.
  James would be totally thick not to realise this – I just do not believe that he is personally that dumb although some in his party would be.

    I think Shaw is politically naive, at best, but most probably thick , to go with it. That rant on Saturday night sealed my opinion of him.
    If he was any good as a leader he would treat this 75% vote required by the Green’s rules as a challenge and roll his sleeves and go for it. But I don’t think he would know where to start.

    Not a chance. WO has had some excellent podcasts with Simon Lusk on the machinations of politics in NZ. One interesting point was that regardless of the political spectrum, everyone hated the Greens, because they were sanctimonious, couldn’t be trusted, and were lazy MP’s, preferring to grandstand rather than doing the hard yards in the electorates.

Twatford reckons that even though National have the majority of votes Bill has overreached his mandate as caretaker PM in sounding like he can form a government. Surely Twatford can see Bill is just being “relentlessly positive” about the outcome of the negotiations!

Chris Trotter believes National are the party Winston will go with. He made the point that the 46% National voters are the powerful and decision makers throughout the country and will not appreciate the majority vote being passed over if Winnie, Liarbour and the greens form the government. He said National would be relentless in undermining the left leadership if they gained power.

  He should read the Cabinet Manual more carefully. A caretaker government is limited in the executive actions it can take (or consult with party leaders if something urgent arises). A caretaker PM can express views in the role of party leader on the likelihood of being able to form a government.
  Phil Twyford as a potential Minister and party strategist should have a sounder knowledge of the contents of the Cabinet Manual than this.

  Winston has gone fishing for a few days presumably to let Bill and Jacinda stew in their own juices. This does however give them time to better size Winston up. This is a classic negotiating situation – review the other parties’ stances, attitudes, strengths, weaknesses, foibles etc. Interesting to know what team Winston will have supporting him – I suspect he will run his side single handed – not the wisest thing to do.

    I can see three positive things about Winnie going with Labour/Green:
    
    1) National are worn out after 9 really hard years (GFC, earthquakes, Pike, etc) and are not as shart as they were. A term out of government would give then a bit of a rest and get them some of that hunger back.
    
    2) A Labour/Green/NZF clusterfuck (I think that is now the established term) would be so dysfunctional that a generation of voters would get inoculated against communism.
    
    3) There’s always going to changes. The world is likely more stable over the next 3 years than it is going to be in the 2020s. Rather have the idiot team in now and have the Nat+ team back when we really need them again.

I said pre-election not to discount a National-Green government. They would have to offer Greens more than they would get from confidence and supply to a Labour-NZFirst government.

I said post election that National would have to approach the Greens (and demonstrate this would be the case).

It is possible if Greens are taken for granted AND National made real concessions.

Given Green party members would vote on whether to accept either arrangement – and Greens want change, they would have to make the better offer.

    James’ attitude is quite OK for starters. Labour needs Greens’ support to form a government with Winston (and even then has only a barely workable majority of one) and James has indicated that the Greens will not just fall in line. National can form a government with either Winston or the Greens with a reasonable working majority. As I have mentioned previously James has not ruled out taking a phone call from Bill English.

    A lot of parties on the right emerged when National was weak, ACT in the 90’s and United in 2002.
    
    So too the Greens rose over 10% (two elections in a row) while Labour was weak (in the 90’s New Labour/Alliance).

The former opposition the Social Democrats which joined her coalition (like National-Labour here) fell to 20% and do not want to continue.

The FD the former coalition partners which left parliament in 2014 return with 10%. Meaning a coalition with the Greens also 10% is required to form a new government coalition (the left 10% and the anti-immigration nationalists 13.5% are the other parties).

PROBLEM. They closed down the aging nuclear plants and went back into coal. The Greens oppose use of the coal plants. More dependence on Russian gas …

  I know it won’t change anything but part of the 32.5% is the CSU who aren’t exactly happy with Merkel. They had a party conference in Bavaria last week and invited the PM of Hungray to it – Vicktor Orban the highest profile anti immigration European head of state.
  So Merkel is in for some tough negotiations , I think.
  If the CSU broke their traditional alliance with the CDU it would not mean Merkel was gone but symbolically it would “rattle a few trees”.

The Chair of the Board of Transparency International Jose Ugaz said that John Key should be investigated over the Panama Papers on 1 August 2017, at a meeting held at Rutherford House, Victoria University.

I was there, (with about 200 other people) and heard Jose Ugaz say this, myself.

Have any NZ mainstream media ever covered this story?

If not – WHY not?

  3. Do either of them pay their rates?

We are stuck with MMP but it needs some changes. The Greens don’t know how to play as their refusal to consider both major parties regardless of what National might offer them hands NZ First much more influence than they should have.

We need to reduce the threshold to 3% to make it easier to have more parties in the parliament. That would stop one party ( NZ First ) holding everyone to ransom. It would also encourage the Greens for eg to split into a at left wing and an environmental wing. They might both get 3% but even than it would under our current situation allow the environmental wing to deal with the Nats without worrying about their communist cousins.

We should then et rid of the coattailing if you win an electorate seat. This makes for grubby deals and wont be necessary with a 3% threshold.

We should then scrap the maori seats as they do not belong in an MMP system and Maori don’t seem to have much trouble getting elected in general seats if they are good enough. Having 7 extra general electorates would make them geographically smaller and easier to represent. Spreading those on the Maori roll over general seats might make it even easier for Maori to get into parliament and reducing the threshold to 3% should mean one or two Maori parties could get list seats on their merits rather than depending on a 150 year old contrivance that was intended to be short term.

  3. 3% is still too high for ACT …
  
  4. Blue Greens should form their own party and be given Epsom.

    3% seems about right to me. It does not seem all that easy to get there. Besides last parliament we had Maori, ACT and United future none of whom had anywhere near 3%. Seemed to work OK.
    
    It would mean new parties could start more easily and would make parliament more attuned to the electorate.

        The idea is to give young families a helping hand while they are hopefully educating their kids for self sufficiency.
        Unfortunately we’ve gone a bit too far and pay quite a few morons to have kids and NOT educate them but allow them to rent the kids out to pay for their drug habits.
        We reward bad behaviour instead of encouraging good.
        But the basis of a civilised society should be fair wages and assistance for children’s welfare (not their parents’.)
