Steven Joyce was being too nice as Robbo’s interns actually wrote a $17 billion hole. That will teach them trying to get something for nothing and sticking them in a pa.       Fart Tax? This is an issue which has been foisted on the Western World by (Weird) Al Gore. 30,000 years ago the world average temperature was 16 degrees C above what it is now. It caused coastal flooding (melting ice caps) which killed kauri. These ‘swamp’ kauri now give us a snapshot of that period. The 97% of scientists who agree that climate change is man (and his sister) influenced gathered at Al’s place one afternoon, and after singing Kumbaya came up with this BS. How will this tax change this inimitable rule of nature (that is climates are volatile and change whether we influence it or not)? Taxing natural laws is a cover for making money to keep a lid on progress and stop initiatives. They should hang their heads in shame!!!

  Where is the promotion of what’s good about National’s policies? Where are the explanations about what National’s approach has slowly but surely been achieving? Why are people still being allowed to get away with saying that National has done nothing to address poverty, immigration, housing costs, water quality, quality of healthcare etc?

    This new National ad is focussed on the issue that Labour has already announced a lot of taxes and as many more potential ones up their sleeves. So, it focuses on facts not personalities, and is done in a light, humorous way.

        Because the most effective method of advertising is to focus on one simple point. In this case, Labour taxes. Its only 15 seconds long for goodness sake. How much do you expect them to cover in that time?
        
        They have other ads that frame National in a positive light.
        
        A common mistake with advertisers is to try and cram as much content as possible into whatever space they have paid for. However, it often confuses the message, and reduces the effectiveness of the ad.

        Telling the truth is hardly negative. People need to know what they are in for. Jacinda Ardern hasn’t been prepared to front up in any meaningful way on the huge costs she’s going to impose on the voting population.
        
        Not just Cullen’s ‘rich pricks’ earning 50k, but everyday Kiwi battlers earning even less.
        
        And just for good measure, so we are under no illusions what we are about to be taxed on, Jacinda and Labour are going to drive that point home with a brand new ad featuring none other than, you guessed it, Michael Cullen telling us how just fantastic Jacinda Ardern and her tax plans really are.

        As much as I’m no fan of Nick Smith things have moved a million miles in terms of water quality and water quantity since 2008. There is now a NPS in place which sets standards (the NOF) and requires Regional Councils to actually do a whole bunch of things to address water quality.
        
        To support this there are a large number of collaborative water management processes going on around the Country which brings a range of stakeholers together (…well except maybe for the born to rule Fish and Game fuckwits) to decide how things will be managed. These processes are a million miles from the adverserial situation at the which existed prior to 2008. Sure they won’t fix things overnight, but anyone who thinks a tax is the answer is a mong.
        
        For example, as the good folks in Maniototo point out, the requirement to pay water and fart tax will result in perverse outcomes. In that area (mainly extensive sheep and beef) an increased tax burden is likely to require landowners to intrensify land use to stay in business, with the inevitable effects on water quality that will result.
        
        Effective management of water resources requires buy-in, and must be done, at a community level and certainly isn’t going to be achieved on the back of an adverserial situation based on central government dictates. I really can’t understand why the Blue team hasn’t been pointing out that what Labour is proposing will take water management back almost a decade.

        You will find Bill English’s speech to the Ashburton farmers yesterday addressed this very point. Along the lines of Liarbor taxing farmers who have been long been improving water quality so the tax can be used to employ experts in Wellington, who know nothing about farming, to advise farmers on water quality.

      They have. But in political terms, “explaining is losing”, which is Saccharine Cindy’s wafer-thin vision and moonbeams and monkey shit “relentless positivity” that avoids details has been so successful in the sound bite age.
      
      Now, for a change, Labour will have to play defence, and I don’t think “I am still determined to be positive and transparent” with two big doe eyes and smiley and/or worried face will suffice. 😉

    …a tax Working Group would not be selected to give pre-arranged results,
    
    …that Labour haven’t been sufficiently resourced these last nine years to formulate their tax policy (can we have a refund of our tax payer dollars that funded the Labour party research unit? 😉 ),
    
    …and “experts” should decide our tax regime without those of us who pay it being allowed to hear first what they recommend and then decide for ourselves via the ballot box.

      I don’t disagree with any of what you say about the reasons why Labour is bad, and the reasons not to vote Labour.
      
      I’m not going to be voting Labour. I am firmly “two ticks blue”.
      
      But I am more and more dismayed at how little National is doing to present itself and its achievements in a positive light.
      
      There’s much that is good to say about what their approach has already achieved and why their proposed way forward is most likely to deliver national wellbeing.

        English is doing a good job in interviews and debates. But for the sound bite nature of tv ads it is a losing strategy. Long on details, short on excitement. Who the hell wants an economics and/or history lecture…besides considered men like you and me, Albert? 😉
        
        Just ask the 1972 National government – in power 12 years, excellent record, and, other than Norman Kirk, “man for man the stronger team” applied to Marshall, Muldoon, Talboys, Gordon McIntyre compared to Hugh Watt, Bill Rowling, Matt Rata, Arthur Faulkner, Warren Freer and a whole host of non-entities and light-wights in the 1972-75 Labour government…
        
        And National lost by a landslide in 1972. Swinging/unaligned voters aren’t interested in what you did (or they would vote for or against you anyway, so advertising pitched at them is a waste of time), anymore than they are now in what the Holyoake/Marshall government did. Is history. For a sound bite you ad, you need to talk about now…and the future.
        
        Which is why Norman Kirk won in 19742 with “Time for a change”, and Ardern has had so much traction with her “vision” bullshit.

        Look, I’m in much the same boat as you. But the sad truth is that it is stories – narrative as they say nowadays – that works rather than facts and figures.
        
        As just one small example, look at English raising the benefits for the first time in 25 years, and then lifting the accomodation support. National trumpeted it as much as possible at the time, but it was greeted with “meh” by the still essential MSM, and I see little evidence that most people even recall it now.
        
        Given how pathetic National has been to date on this front I’m pleased to see them finally put Labour on the back foot with a simple “narrative” that is entirely in keeping with the bullshit of “Lets Do It” and all the other vacuous crap Jacinda has been uttering for the last few weeks – to general acclaim I might add!

      I think there’s a difference between saying it and it being reported.
      
      To be fair, in politics you have to treat the media like a force of nature – you can’t change it, you work with it. Perhaps a better analogy is rub of the green. Anyone can get offside with the media, everyone knows how to manage it, you have to work with the realities of media.
      
      National aren’t as good as they were – frankly Bill is boring, and they don’t get as much airtime as they did with John Key. So they’ll have to work harder than they’re used to.
      
      But some of a media strategy is to get media to listen. So they need to puncture Jacinda’s bubble so that they can then get people to start looking at what National have to offer. Looks like the honeymoon is starting to end, and National are starting to get some attention again.

    No, it’s because farming is essential to New Zealand’s economy, which National understands and Labour does not.
    
    Truth is we don’t need any climate change policy. Assuming man made global warming is happening, absolutely nothing New Zealand does one way or another is going to make any difference at all.
    
    In National’s case it was a strategic move to fend off a potential line of attack from the media and the Left, and in the case of Labour and the Greens it’s empty virtue signaling at the expense of rural communities and farmers.
    
    Plus, in the minds (and I use that term loosely) of urban liberal-leftists, those rural and farming types are all hideous inbred deplorable rednecks who deserve to be kicked in the economic guts. My god, those people don’t even know what intersex and gender fluid mean! Terrible people! Tax them into the ground!

I have to commend the bright and breezy tune, easy pop-up graphics and comic feel. Given that all those are so incongruent with the content of the message, I’m reminded of Paul McCartney’s Maxwell’s Silver Hammer off the Beatles Abby Road album – and having to work on the “granny shit” that was that song did more than anything else – Yoko and Allen Klein included – to split up the Fab Four! 😉

Considering National have increased GST, increased the excise tax on alcohol, increased fuel taxes, introduced taxes on Kiwi saver contributions, increased road user charges and added the ‘brightline’ test for taxes on land sales, then I don’t think National are exactly squeaky clean when it comes to new or increased taxes.

  Because all those things are the same as inheritance tax, CGT, land tax, and punitive water tax. Just the same. I like how it leaves out the other ones in the 18. Like the paperboy thing that never went ahead. And the increase in ACC levies which Labour says is a tax. I think Joyce said in the house that by Labour’s logic their failure to raise benefits is a tax. The Labour didn’t raise benefits tax. Should add it to the ad.

Also remember ACC company/self employed fees have dropped dramatically not to mention car rego from high $384 ish down to $78-$130 odd. (not counting motorbikes because body damage from bike accidents are substantially worse than cars.)

    If you mean it is regressive relative to the current income tax rates, then yes you are correct.

    It’s a choice tax. Don’t spend, don’t pay gst. Best way to avoid it is to have a large interest only mortgage on a rental property. Mortage payments are GST free, and the capital gains far out way the interest of the loan and negative gearing gives you a healthy tax break too. My preference would be to have no GST on essential food, and no gst on fuel as it is already taxed. But I’d rather pay GST along with the gangs and the black market than pay higher paye while the gangs pay FA.

  National has legislated to reduce tax, so has a predisposition to give money back to taxpayers.
  
  Also, they aren’t promoting the idea of a tax committee who will have the power to recommend all sorts of yet to be determined taxes.
  
  On the other hand, Labour has an unrealistically tight budget, and enormous spending promises that is likely to need to be topped up by as much tax as they can milk from taxpayers in whatever way possible.
  
  So, absolutely fair for National to highlight this.

  It should be as successful as labour’s rail deal sold Tranzrail in 2003 for $231 million to Toll Holdings Australia and in 2008 bought it back for $665 million and rebranded it KiwiRail all on Mr Cullen’s watch.
  One of the things he left the incoming National government with.
  Now that was a great socialist deal buy something back for almost 3 times what you sold it for 5 years earlier. (Because Toll were smarter than them and they had to buy it back – a clause in the agreement worked in Toll’s favour)

  Judging the growing distrust Taxinda has attracted by being too vague the latest poll indicates the dead cat has not hit the table yet. Expect the “bounce” seeing her with a number starting with 2 when it does BOUNCE.

This is a good start, but it’s pretty mild really. National could be hammering them so much harder.

The situation now is very similar to 2005. Labour were looking tired back then, Brash had pulled the Nats ahead, and even weathered the Exclusive Brethren “scandal”, but Labour ran a very dirty, negative campaign in the last couple of weeks and managed to pull it back and get their voters out on the day.

Ardern has roused the regions in the same way that Brash roused South Auckland, and hopefully they will come through in the same way and say “no thanks”.

  There is some truth there BlairM but even today it was yet another school. Nelson School for Girls no less. One student said it was inspirational. If you have seen the young “ladies” that attend this institution they all show a lake of pride by looking like unmade beds.
  I guess it was a “girls can” sort of thing and she will be coming back after the election for the second lecture. “Girls can achieve and make stuff ups too”. No sorry the impact in the regions won’t be enough to slow her slide.
