Tess O’Rourke was not a cricket fan before Sunday – and she certainly isn’t now.

But the 18-year-old still has her sense of humour despite being taken to hospital just minutes after arriving at the Canterbury Wizards’ Twenty20 game against the Auckland Aces on Sunday at QEII Park, where she was hit in the face by a Colin de Grandhomme six.

“I wasn’t watching. I had my face turned to the side, then bang.”

Her nose was broken in at least two places and she spent seven hours at Christchurch Hospital. She needed 12 stitches.

Ouch, ouch, ouch. A cricket ball to the face is just simply nasty.

She would go back to another cricket game only if she was in a corporate box. The Press contacted the Canterbury Cricket Association, which will invite O’Rourke to this Sunday’s game as its guest – in a corporate box.

They should give her a reasons pass for the box!

Asked if she had a message for de Grandhomme, O’Rourke cheekily said her younger brother Matt was keen on a cricket helmet for Christmas if he had a spare.

“I can only laugh now, but it hurt like a bitch at the time,” she said.

“My friends said if it was to happen to anyone, it would happen to me. I think it’s because I’m small and ginger.”

Now that’s a great sense of humour uder fire.

I agree it is a wonderful vision of the future, that we can aspire to.

I should pass on Danyl’s warning that it may not be work safe, and will offend some.

In one of the advertisements, a voiceover tells teenagers that every time they use mobile phones and drive, ”gingers get fresh with other gingers”, while showing two redheads in bed.

Another ad says that using a mobile while driving will cause an ”emo” to be born.

They will be the most effective road safety ads of a generation. Warning teenagers their actions could lead to more gingas or emos will be highly effective.

My brother and members of my family are ginger, and I know in my heart of hearts I carry a recessive ginger gene and there is a chance I will have ginger children myself.

At what state in a dating/relationship scenario do I need to admit this to my beau? Some friends say it should be at the first coffee, but I’d hate to scare them off before they know my redeeming features (I have quite nice toes, for example).

Not this is serious issue. I tend to think it should be mandatory disclosure at a first date. Maybe even a criminal offence not to disclose – like with certain communicable diseases.
