Welcome back Greer

Friday, March 26th, 2010 at 9:36 am

Pleased to see Fairfaxer Greer McDonald return to the blogosphere with her new “lady in the red” blog.

I am amused that Greer has gone from having one blog (one being single) which was effectively about her lack of sex, to another about which is effectively about her lack of money :-)

Naughty Tiger

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 12:00 pm

News.com.au reports:

GOLF superstar Tiger Woods has admitted “transgressions” saying he had let his family down, in a statement posted on his website that appeared to confirm rumours of an extramarital affair.

A famous person having an affair is hardly unusual, but this case has generated considerable discussion, as his wife, Elin Nordegren, is a beautiful model in her 20s.

Greer McDonald asks the question of whether monogamy is natural:

Do you think that the majority have just been taught that monogamy is the right and only way, and that it’s actually “natural” to want – and be with – more than one person?

Or is it in the human nature to be coupled up and be okay with that?

For my 2c I think that the vast majority of guys are attracted to other women, even if in a happy relationship. However that does not mean you act on the attraction.

The ASPA Awards

Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

I was one of the judges for the Best Website section of the Aotearoa Student Press Association Awards, so went along to the awards ceremony on Thursday night.

Barry Soper (left) was the Awards MC and Guest Speaker. Laura McQuillan was the Awards organiser.

I knew a few of the other Judges, and got to meet some I hadn’t already met, such as the Dom’s Post Greer McDonald, and Nicky Hager. No doubt Whale and Cactus will expel me again from the VWRC for fraternising with Nicky. I did ask Nicky to consider revealing one day in the future (as in many decades time after the people involved are dead) who or how he got the National Party e-mails,for the sake of accurate history.

Yes Man movie

Monday, January 5th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

Greer McDonald has a review of Yes Man:

I went and saw Yes Man on the weekend. Not being a Jim Carrey fan but having seen an interview with Danny Wallace, the guy who wrote the autobiographical book that it is based on, I was keen to splash out my hard-earned dosh to see if it was any good.

I cringed at the start, not only was Carrey up to his face-pulling, can’t-act-to save-himself mode, he was also incredibly old. Like, wrinkly and stuff. When did that happen?

The movie did get better, namely with the introduction of Rhys Darby’s character. The role was perfect for him, he was essentially channelling his role of Murray the manager of Flight of the Conchords and doing a mighty good “cringe coz it’s so Kiwi” job of it.

I also saw the movie last week. Greer is right – Jim Carrey does suddenly look old. And I am not sure he fitted the role of a social recluse who neer wants to socialise or go out.

But overall the movie was worth seeing as a light and fluffy comedy. Murray the manager was hilarious, as was his Harry Potter party.

The scene with Carrey’s elderly neighbour was hilarious. It was sick and wrong, and I winced, but it was funny. Remember this is a film about Carrey having to say yes to everything.

I thought Zooey Deschanel did well as the love interest – she was quirky.

The ending was a bit lame and flat, but overall it wasn’t a bad watch. More a movie to watch on DVD though than the big screen.
