Monday Motivator – Guardian Of The Coast

Monday Motivator 19

Guardian Of The Coast, Nugget Point, New Zealand

I love photographing lighthouses and this one found on the Catlins coast at Nugget Point is one of my favourites.

I will always remember climbing out to this vantage point in the hours before dawn and watching the stunning light show play out in front of me. A long exposure allowed me to capture the endless movement of the waves as they swirl around the rocky outcrop.

Monday Motivator – Hollyford Treasure

Monday Motivator 12

Hollyford Treasure, Fiordland, New Zealand

Along the stunning drive toward Milford Sound there are literally countless opportunities to keep a landscape photographer excited  for a very long time. I came across this opening in the Hollyford River early in the morning which allowed me to use a long exposure to capture the clear flowing water and lushness of the forest behind.

I am looking forward to heading back to this area soon on my next South Island trip.

Cheers Richard

Monday Motivator – Te Whaiti-Nui-a-Toi Canyon

Monday Motivator 3

This week we venture into the North Islands Whirinaki Forest to a wee gem of a location. I love being out in nature and discovering amazing places such as this. I’ll never forget arriving at this canyon which is located beneath a large canopy of trees and just feeling the awe and spirit of the scene. It was simply beautiful and I was determined to capture a photograph that resonated some of the mood and feeling of this ageless canyon.

I loved this perspective as soon as I found it – the steep heavily mossed canyon walls just seemed to drop away beneath me and the rushing water at the bottom sparkled like a jewel. This photograph was captured in a single frame with an exposure over a minute – this is how I was able to capture the beautiful surreal-like water which makes this such an enduring photograph.

Wednesday Wallpaper | Cathedral Square & Full Moon, Christchurch

Cathedral Square at night with the Christchurch Cathedral and the Chalice Sculpture (by Neil Dawson) Canterbury, New Zealand - stock photo, canvas, fine art print

Cathedral Square, Christchurch at night with full moon and fire poi guys (and gals?). Post first Canterbury earthquake. Photography by Sarah Sisson

Sarah made this image in October 2010, after the first Canterbury earthquake.  We were both amazed at how well the city was rebounding from those first earthquakes – Cantabrians had done an incredible job of getting most of the core CBD landmarks up and going even within 6 weeks of the quake.  We have a gallery of Christchurch CBD images up on our stock photography site from that October shoot that some of you may find to be a pleasant use of five minutes.

Sorry for posting and running last week – I forgot about my Canon v Nikon question.  Beautox nailed the answer – yes it was made on the Canon.  And we’re great thanks Bob – must catch up soon!

Evening Light Over The Haast River, South Westland New Zealand. Landscape Photography By Todd Sisson

Sorry for the tardiness on this week’s wallpapering –  I’ve been running a day late (and several bucks short) this week due to the tyranny of school holidays.

This image has always called out to me from the depths of our image archive, but I have never shared it with the world – simply because I could never figure out how to bring the best out of it in post-processing (yes, I am a proud proponent of tasteful photoshoppery).  Fortunately, the problem resolved itself today when I walked past Sarah’s computer and spotted this on her screen – apparently it had called out to her too.  I think she has made it sing.

See you next week!

Free New Zealand Photos | Winter Sheep Wallpaper

Hello all and welcome to Wednesday Wallpaper for 22 August.

This week we head up the road from our home to Wedderburn for some snowy ovine action.  We have seen precious little snow around Central Otago this winter, so I presume that will translate to never ending rain during barbecue season – or  biblical grade droughts.

Speaking of the bible, there is one Hell of a ‘discussion’ flaring up on today’s General Debate  on the topic of  creationism in schools….too heated for this artistically inclined fruitcake.

See you next week!

Back into some classic South Island scenery this week, the oft-photographed Blue Lake in St Bathans.  This image was made using the very last of the sun’s rays while leading a private workshop.  I will be visiting here again this weekend as part of our final winter landscape photography workshop – can’t wait!

New Zealand Landscape Photos | Red Sunrise Pouakai Ridge Taranaki

Sunrise from the Pouakai ridge Mt Egmont National Park, Taranaki New Zealand

Welcome to Wednesday (and August).

A little respite from South Island scenery this week, this image was made from the Pouakai Ridge on the Northern flank of Mt Taranaki.  Sarah & I hiked up in the dark on the previous evening – fortunately the sun broke through, as it would have been a lot of effort for a photo of fog & mist shrouded tusssocks….

As always, this is available as a [free iPad wallpaper] Password = freewallpaper

Thanks again to David for hosting Wednesday Wallpaper.  Have a great week.

Welcome to another Wednesday morning – July is rapidly evaporating – I must admit that I’m looking forward to a respite from all this fog and frost though, roll on August…..

This image was made by my lovely and talented wife, Sarah.  It has just been featured as a double page spread New Zealand Geographic’s latest publication – Southern Exposure – which is well worth purchasing if you are a fan of New Zealand imagery (not just landscape photos either).

Sunrise Over The Moeraki Boulders, Coastal Otago, New Zealand

Welcome to Wednesday folks.

This week’s wallpaper is from my favourite coastal photography location – Moeraki, North Otago.  The spherical forms of the Moeraki Boulders combined with the mercurial nature of the tides make for endless shooting options – toss in a fleeting sunrise, and you have a truly memorable photographic experience on your hands 🙂

The full size wallpaper can be downloaded here

Wednesday Wallpaper | 4 July

Sunset Reflection Lake Matheson & The Southern Alps New Zealand

Sunset Reflection From Lake Matheson, Westland New Zealand

Welcome to the Wednesday Wallpaper – your midweek, scenic seque towards Chthoniid‘s wonderful Friday Photo.

Each week Sarah or I will be sharing an image from our New Zealand photography portfolio.  Each photo will be available for free download as a high resolution (2048px) wallpaper image – suitable for the new iPad or your PC desktop.

First up is Lake Matheson at sunset, truly one of New Zealand’s most stunning vistas.  This image was made from Reflection Island on the Matheson walkway on a summer’s evening.  The afternoon breeze dropped off, as it often does, right on sunset revealing this mirror reflection of the Southern Alps.

You can download the wallpaper here

Thanks to David for this opportunity to share a little of our country’s beauty with the Kiwiblog audience. Enjoy!
