Free publicity for The Rock

The shareholders of The Rock will want to thank Sue Bradford and Carol Beaumont for promoting their win a bride competition.

NZPA report:

A radio contest to win a Ukrainian mail-order bride has come in for more flak – this time from an MP within Parliament.

Labour’s Women’s Affairs spokeswoman Carol Beaumont this morning said she was ”appalled” by the contest.

In a blog on Labour’s Red Alert site, Beaumont added her criticism to that of the former Green Party MP Sue Bradford for the promotion.

”It is a reminder that there is still an attitude towards women in NZ that is deeply troubling – that they are commodities to buy and to own,” Beaumont said.

”The reality is that there is still a long way to go to achieving genuine equality for women in New Zealand. There are still stereotypes, put downs and discrimination.”

The contest, run by MediaWorks’ The Rock radio station, will see the winner flown to the Ukraine for 12 nights, given $2000 spending money, and offered their choice of a bride from an agency.

”If you’re interested in holy matrimony with a potentially hot foreign chick, fill it out to the best of your abilities,” the competition application form says on the station’s website.

The radio station is promoting the contest on air as ”morally bankrupt”.

This is the same radio station that also married off total strangers to each other in another competition (ironically the marriage is still going well a decade later), so why are people surprised over this competition?

Radio John

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 at 4:45 pm

A health warning for those with musical talent, but this nine minute video of John Key on The Edge with JJ and Dom includes him singing Snoopy’s Xmas. Stuff has an amusing story here.

What I found amusing was how they got him to do it by saying Helen wouldn’t sing on air for them, and he replied that is probably why she lasted nine years :-)

He also was in at The Rock, and they have audio of him here. It’s also pretty damn funny and he answers some non-PC questions such as:

Would he rather travel with Rodney Hide or Hone Harawria?
and Can women parallel park?

Also John comments how having DPS means you never need dial a driver and they interview any boys wanting to date Steffi :-)

And finally not including John, but The Rock puts the can men park better theory to the test, with video of their experiments.

Bomb Making Recipies

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

The HoS reported:

Award-winning radio presenter Jono Pryor has been stood down from his job on The Rock after letting a listener share his bomb-making recipe on air.

Probably not the wisest thing to do.

The gaffe occurred when Pryor and his drive show co-host Robert Taylor asked listeners to share stories about accidentally blowing something up last Thursday.

In his blog, Taylor said one listener must have misunderstood the request and called in to share his recipe for “how to make a bomb”. “Subsequently (and against my advice at the time) the bomb recipe call went to air.”

I do wonder though whether a stand down is over the top. Look I am not advocating people should be making bombs, but I would say there is far less danger of someone being able to make a bomb based on a few seconds of a radio broadcast, than being able to find the same info on the Internet.

I mean if you type in “How to make a bomb” in Google you get several handy You Tube videos to make it really easy. And link no 8 is how to make an atomic bomb! Yahoo Answers even has details on how to make a hydroegn bomb.

So I’m really not sure that reading out a bomb recipie on air is a big deal. If he advocated people make and use one that would be different but it was obviously done in humour.
