Only in Wanganui.

Fire and ambulance staff were called to a laundromat in Gonville yesterday afternoon after a child became shut inside a drier.

The 9-year-old girl climbed into the appliance while her aunt and uncle were attending to the washing.

The girl said she did not know why she got inside the machine but said her brother had shut the door.

Her brother said he shut the door because his sister asked him to.

The children’s uncle called emergency services, and Whanganui Fire Service officer Bob Wills-Rawlings said hand tools were used to free her from the machine. “The St John staff checked her over and said she was fine,” he said.

Mr Wills-Rawlings said it was good that the situation was easily dealt with.

“It’s all in a day’s work,” he said.

She was the second child to to be rescued from a machine at the Alma Rd laundromat.

A 10-year-old boy was stuck in a washing machine in October last year.

    The door would lock shut while the machine is operating since opening it during a wash would spill water everywhere. Possibly the door locked when shut with the child inside but the machine did not start as money had not been inserted.

      Thanks for the explanation…. I’m not sure that its correct as that would mean the effectively customer loses the clothes and can’t add or remove clothes before starting the wash. But good thought, thanks.

Heather du Plessis Alan made a wee slip up the other day whilst discussing the Trump / Clinton debate with her ‘Story’ co-host Duncan Garner on his radio show –

Although not as definitive as Katie Bradford’s ‘No matter what we do…’ moment, it’s a clear sign that the media are, as usual, united in promulgating one candidate of the Presidential race. From the smirking of a news anchor through to patronizing articles in the print media it’s a been a daily spectacle for months.

Maybe it’s a good thing that the NZ media are, to a man, Trump haters. Maybe that says kiwis can see a knob end when they spot one, but I don’t actually want (overwhelmingly) one side of a debate. It’s not a debate at that point.

I want someone – anyone, aside from Leighton Smith – to come forward and say they think Trump is onto something and defend his position because with a rather large number of Americans behind him there must be more to it. Or is it just easier to ridicule someone who has rubbish hair, is not very articulate and is rude to women?

  I think you’ve hit the nail on the head duggledog. Kiwis are getting sick and tired of being told by the media what to think and believe, based on their myopic worldview. By and large we are intelligent enough to make up our own minds on issues, without being told what we should, in their opinion, be doing.
  
  You mention Duncan Garner there – yesterday he had this on his show’s FB page – “I think it’s time for Steve Tew to go – do you agree?”
  
  Naturally, a few rabid dogs rose to his clickbait. But interestingly, there were as many if not more people telling Garner to pull his head in; here’s a small selection:
  
  * Duncan slowly but surely you are giving me the shits with these outbursts and thinking everyone should fall inline with you’re thinking. It’s one crusade after another and to hell with those that disagree.
  
  * You are usually sensible Duncan but this time you’re going after the wrong man.Its theJudge that needs to go as hes the one who didnt convict Filipo. Tew cant be responsible for every rugby player’s off field behaviour.
  
  * Duncan I have just listened to your rant about Tew & Losi Filipo. You came across as a self righteous prat. Do you think NZ society will benefit from this boy being locked up ? This boy has been named & shamed, lost his job & if you & your bullyboys have your way, all hope for a decent future removed . Yes he carried out an horrendous act. I suggest that you look at ALL of the court documents ( I have ) & get your facts straight. I hate this “vengeance at all costs” society that we’ve become. I wish Filipo & his victims all the best for their futures. I have to say that I’m extremely disappointed with your judge, jury & executioner stance. By all means express your concerns, disgust , but don’t turn into a nasty bully. You have a responsibility to put a balanced side across & in this case I don’t think that you have.
  
  The “judge, jury and executioner” comment sums up our media perfectly. That’s why we are increasingly sceptical of their opinions, which they present as absolute fact.

  Why shouldn’t the media be united in promulgating one candidate of the Presidential race if they individually have come to conclusions which are the same?
  Du Plessis Alan, Henry, Hosking, Garner, Smith and co. are all paid to give us their opinions and entertain. Viewing and listening figures suggest we can’t get enough of them.
  Getting sides of the debate is irrelevant, it’s not a debate, it’s entertainment, it’s stuff to fill the spaces between the ads.
  That goes for every topic not just the US election. An election which will not be affected in the tiniest, most minute, smidgeon of an iota by what Heather du Plessis Alan thinks or says about Donald Trump.

At least that women’s magazine nonsense is not contrived viewpoints which exclude relevant facts, which seemed to be par for the course on Campbell Live.
  
  The channel was changed to the Hosking show where two bimbos simpered about musical choices and “Delta’s hair”. If TV One had to earn a crust, and not bludge off us taxpayers, these nohopers would have to try and get a real job.

Losi Filipo case: How the judges judge

NOTES OF JUDGE B DAVIDSON ON SENTENCING INDICATION

[1] This is a sentence indication hearing for the defendant Filipo. He faces related charges of injuring with reckless disregard, assault with intent to injure and assault on a female.

[2] The charges relate to events, also involving his elder brother which occurred in the early hours of Sunday 11 October 2015 in the Wellington CBD. The defendant and his brother encountered another group comprised at the very least of 2 young men and 2 females, although they were all not together at the same time.

[3] The genesis of the incident is not entirely clear but what is clear enough is just how the defendant responded. He ran up to the first victim, that for which the charge is injuring. He grabbed him by the collar, punched him towards his head,knocking him unconscious, and while on the ground stomped on him around 4 times. This caused fairly significant injuries including concussion, grazing and bruising. The victim was taken to hospital and held overnight, presumably for observation. That victim has suffered significantly. He had been an active sportsman but has had to give up his chosen sport because of the risk of further head injury.

[4] From there, the incident developed. The 2 charges of assault on a female, apart from the fact they involve young ladies, are not particularly serious in themselves. They are more in the nature of pushing and shoving of each of them.

  That’s the problem with this case. Davidson made his decision based on a totality of information, not little snippets in isolation. We need to see ALL the information before we rush to judgment.

      Thanks for that. As for the judges, they certainly have far more wisdom that either you or I Chuck, and they have ALL relevant information in front of them when considering their decisions.
      
      That is not to say of course that they don’t make mistakes. We only have to look at the volume of cases being appealed to higher courts. I look forward to the Solicitor-General’s review of the Filipo sentencing.

        The judge who discharged rugby player Losi Filipo without conviction may be facing a public backlash for his decision.
        
        But a former district court judge said the decision was based on law and a simple legal test that allowed Judge Bruce Davidson to come to his particular ruling.
        
        Retired Judge Dr David Harvey, now a lecturer at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Law, said he had read the judgment and was not going to question Judge Davidson’s ruling.
        
        “Once you read his reasoning, then a lot of things become clear. It would be wrong of me and indeed it would be wrong of anybody to second-guess the judge, because he had the opportunity to hear the evidence and make the evaluation and step through the process.
        
        “I don’t know what I’d do, because I don’t have all of the information that he has.”

    The judge in his sentencing notes made no reference to higher court decisions on ‘discharge without conviction’ – that is the part that would have been of interest. There is nothing in the notes that adequately explains why a ‘discharge without conviction’ was warranted when people had been seriously hurt by his actions.

    They include as a mitigating factor the fact that the thug was willing to undergo restorative justice. That seems stupid to me. Who wouldn’t want to undergo it if this meant a lighter sentence? If you choose a lighter sentece, that’s a mitigating factor?

Syria. I’ve just watched ‘What’s really happening in Syria’ on YouTube where ‘Syrian Girl’ gives an explanation of the US vs. Russia proxy war there. She claims that the US is supporting ISIS and Al Qaeda in an attempt to aid in the establishment of a Kurdish state (presumably to act as a buffer and US client in the whole region).

It really seems to me that America has a romanticized notion that their form of government should prevail worldwide and they are prepared to unleash all sorts of hell to overthrow dictators (like Sadam and now Assad) to ensure that the people get ‘democracy’ with no regard to the consequences. Well, guess what… some people don’t want ‘democracy’ and its not a viable governmental system for their cultures: they just don’t function like that. They want and need strong dictators otherwise they run riot (literally).

  Couldn’t agree more Dave. The US under Obama and also to be fair under George Bush, seem to want to export democracy to these Middle East nations.
  
  The problem is that these nations have no concept of democracy, no tradition of democracy, it is not part of their thinking at all.
  
  So the US goes around unseating these dictators, the guy in Egypt, the guy in Libya, the guy in Iraq and now they want to unseat the guy in Syria. Then if they do unseat these guys they hold an election and go hey presto its democracy, everything will now be all good.
  
  Well guess what? The new democracy promptly elects an Islamic leader who proceeds to institute sharia law and that’s the end of democracy.
  
  I know you won’t agree with me at this point but I would say the problem is at the deeper level of religion. In the West we have the tradition of Christianity and the example of Greek democracy which means that we understand the principles of democratic rule. For Muslims they believe that God sits there alone, he is a kind of strong man who controls everything. Therefore based on their theology they gravitate naturally to a strongman who will rule them strongly and that’s the government they will accept.
  
  So the best you can expect in a Muslim nation is a strongman who will run the country reasonably harshly but is not a Muslim fundamentalist. The idea that you can have democracy given their deeply Islamic mindset is just ridiculous.

    Is called the “doctrine of transcendence”, i.e., God is separate from the creation, not part of it as with animists and pagans (and in a different way, Hindus and Buddhists)
    
    Or do you mean that for Muslims Allah is sooo transcendent, he has no capacity for the balancing doctrine of immanence, i.e, the capacity and willingness to draw near and engage with his created order, as with the Exodus and succeeding preservation of his holy people, Israel, and culminating (from a Christian perspective) with the Incarnation, Life, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of his Son, Jesus Christ?

    I think you are misapplying Muslim theology, or at least you are looking in the wrong place. Leaving aside the historical factors (Mongol invasions, missing the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment, and then Western colonisation). It is not the doctrine of God “ruling as a strong man” as such. Jews and Christians also believe in the “end of the age” and final judgement, when God will impose his rule perfectly on the earth.
    
    The real defining and separating issue is “what about before then?”. Orthodox Jews, like Muslims with Sharia, view the Torah as a perfect expression of God’s will. However, they don’t necessarily see (biblical) Israel as the earthly means of imposing that, plus their Scriptures, particularly the Books of Judges to Chronicles, and also the Prophets portray Israel as a very fallible institution, At the end of the Old Testament/Tanakh you are left asking “these weak unfaithful people seem incapable of living as Yahweh intended, so when is he going to do something to transform them?”
    
    Christianity goes a step further and says that Torah is not the ultimate word in God’s intention for the world – indeed, due to human weakness it is incapable of sufficiently transforming human nature and behaviour. Instead, it offers Christ and the succeeding ministry of the Holy Spirit. So when it comes to politics, as per the development of the Early Chrurch, and post-Christendom, it is not necessary to occupy Caesar’s throne, let alone enjoy his favour – or even freedom from persecution.
    
    Islam, however, sees Sharia as the pinnacle of Allah’s intent, and as there is precious little canonical “after-story” showing how human nature can and easily does pervert spiritual goals the Muslim is left with the political, social and religious mandate – impose this, by persuasion if possible, by conquest if necessary. Hence you need a strong man to do it.
    
    Very simplistic, but that would be where I would put the difference in the (now post-) Christian world’s ability to develop democracy and why it seems to find stony ground in the Muslim world.

  Dave Mann: FWIW, many years ago (as the vietnam action was slowly emerging into public view) when discussing the differences between the emerging American Empire and the expiring British one, it was put to me that the difference was essentially one of ‘attitude’. The British Empire was (in analogy) an older gentleman who had seen a lot of life and, by experience, had learnt what actually worked and what didn’t. In his ‘retirement’ the Empire was slowly being ‘given away’. The Americans, by contrast, were likened to an 18-year old teenager, who thought he knew it all (and was, indeed, quite CERTAIN that he knew it all), and acted accordingly. Under this scenario, (and based only on what he knew), to America. ‘Democracy’ (the US version) was so good and wonderful EVERYONE (especially his ‘friends’) just had to have it as well!! It didn’t matter that ‘Democracy’ (the US version) may not actually ‘suitable’ or even wanted by the ‘locals’, they were going to have it ‘ANYWAY’ , like it or not. Indeed, NOT to have it was to show that the ‘friend’ actually wasn’t, and he would automatically become an enemy. As with most teenagers, when the ‘imposition’ was inevitably rejected he (the USA) reacted very, very negatively and became extremely vengeful. At the time of this discussion, events were unwinding in Laos and Cambodia and the analogy seemed appropriate, especially as ‘the older gentleman’ previously referred-to had achieved essentially the same result (without the carnage) in Malaya (although events in ‘British’ East Africa didn’t exactly fit the proferred narrative). Some 50 years on, the analogy of the ‘Teenager’ still seems appropriate and relevant; time may have passed, but the desire to impose ‘Democracy’ (US-style) still seems to be paramount. On present evidence, it doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon…

Or we could go with Trump who is brash, outspoken, not politically correct and is offering a fresh approach.

It reminds me of World War II when the voice of reason was Neville Chamberlain. He was smart, he was restrained, he was sensible and he was popular amongst the ruling classes. Churchill on the other hand was brash and loud and lots of people didn’t like him.

But one person was right in World War II and one person was a complete failure. Sometimes desperate times require desperate measures. And with the world going to hell on a hand cart and Isis on the march everywhere these are desperate times. Tolerance in the face of great evil is not a virtue. Isis is evil and we should not tolerate their presence upon the earth.

    Stephieboy – I so hate to burst your bubble but the fact of the matter is that war is an aggressive and very unpleasant business. So the only thing to do if you have to go to war is to do it with all of your might, win the thing as quickly as possible and then peace will break out. Going on with half measures just prolongs the thing and makes it worse. So yes bomb the hell out of Isis. I would also say a couple of divisions of American ground troops going in would complete the job. You cannot let Isis carry on their wicked ways. Defeat them utterly and then the problem of Muslim terrorism would be far less around the world. At the moment Isis is the strong horse that is attracting heaps of terrorist wannabes who believe that Isis is winning.
    
    Once Isis is defeated and seen to be defeated then the problems of Muslim terrorism would be half of what they are now.

Obama negotiated a tough deal with Iran which gave them at least 24 hours notice before site inspections, left some sites completely untouched and un-available to inspectors and Iran has promised to not develop nuclear weapons, at least for a while. In exchange for Iran’s “word” Obama has let all of the sanctions go thereby giving Iran a funds boost of 1 to $2 billion and he has paid them ransom money in exchange for hostages.
  Iran now has the money they need to develop all the weapons they want in secret sites which are not open to inspection. They also continue to support terrorism all around the Middle East and the world. They also continue to acts belligerently against the USA including the humiliating act of forcing US sailors to abase themselves and kneel before their captors. They still call the USA the great Satan and children in Iran continue to begin their day by chanting death to America and death to Israel.
  
  But in exchange Obama is able to wave around a piece of paper called the Iran nuclear deal and declare peace in our time.

In my view, the effective mainstream media manipulation of this 2016 Auckland Mayoral election, in order to help steer the majority of electors into voting for the candidate the major of BIG business (and commercial property developers) want you to have (Phil Goff), is simply beyond belief.

Leave to adduce the further affidavit evidence is declined.

      To the extent Ms Bright considers that the Public Records Act has anything to do with this appeal, she is simply wrong.

      Ms Bright next referred to the rates postponement issue and the fact that she had attended a meeting of the governing body of the Council and made submissions to that body. … The Council has not agreed to a rates postponement.

      None of the issues that Ms Bright raise amount to a defence to the Council’s claim for rates. Ms Bright may wish to make a point about the Council’s obligations under the Public Records Act and the Local Government Act, but these proceedings are not an appropriate vehicle to do so. Ms Bright, like other ratepayers, has an obligation to pay the rates that have been validly assessed as payable by her. Her refusal to do so simply increases the administration costs of the Council.
      
      Then, as you rightly point out, Venning J slapped her with a $7,080.00 costs order.

Well, the lastest FBI release of documents has some tasty titbits.

1. Clinton had over 1,000 emails between herself (and staff presumably) and General Petraeus deleted and wiped. Since at the time Petraeus worked as Chief of Staff of the Army and then Director of the CIA, it hardly seems likely that these would be personal, no ?

2. Clinton swore on oath, under penalty of perjury if incorrect, before a federal judge, that she released all emails that were relevant. She lied didn’t she, she committed perjury. Scooter Libby was jailed for some time (later released but not pardoned) for less.

3. Obama said, on the record, that the first he knew of Clinton’s private server was from the news (he hears a lot of things that way). Turns out that he was sending emails to HRC at her private email address – and get this – under a pseudonym ! Another flat out liar.

Any Clinton supporter (or Obama supporter come to that) care to try to argue that these two weren’t lying, and that Clinton committed perjury before a federal judge ?

4. And now it is revealed that Cheryl Mills (who was for some reason not only granted immunity – the extent of which we don’t know but also permitted in complete contradiction to the bar rules to act as Clinton’s counsel in a matter that potentially criminally affects them both) computer contained classified documents that she was not cleared to see; and possession of such is a serious federal crime. It should also be noted that conversations that further a criminal conspiracy are NOT covered by lawyer/client confidentiality.

Why don’t the laws that apply to (nearly) everyone else in the USA apply to Hillary Clinton ? Anyone care to hazard a guess why ?

But to be fair, you weren’t using the adverb “truly” to try and insist something was so when it wasn’t necessarily the case. Adverbs like “surely”, “undoubtedly” and “absolutely” were more the target of my beady eye. Instead, you were deepening your emphasis on “inspiring”.

This is why the fools in all those areas insist on giving them fish instead of teaching them, and don’t argue with that mm, because you know that’s precisely what they all in fact, do.
      
      And that poison, that cancer, is what generates disrespect like this.

Colin Craig ruled to have defamed Jordan Williams
Colin Craig has been found to have defamed Taxpayers Union founder Jordan Williams.

The jury returned with the verdict in the long running defamation case on Friday in the High Court at Auckland after retiring on Thursday afternoon.
