Ironically, are National now facing the exact same problem Labour faced (and still face)?

Whereas Helen sprayed 2-4-5-T on any fresh talent, our beloved PM was so popular, nobody National has now can compare – even though in reality, virtually any one of its MPs shine in comparison to Labour’s hopeless line up.

Will National become a victim of its own success?

I’ve been in the provinces and city suburbs a lot recently, and my internal polling this week finds many common folk are hugely disappointed Key has resigned.

They understand his purported reasoning, but nonetheless I’m hearing a sense of abandonment. People were waiting for the ‘incremental radicalism’ to bear fruit you see, but now with Key gone, whom they trusted implicitly, I think they’re going to be restless and uneasy this summer.

Civic underinvestment across the country, low quality immigration, petty theft, meth, exorbitant property prices spreading etc all getting worse and now the captain has rowed off into the sunset.

  Getting rid of McCully, Smith, Finlayson, Brownlee, Guy, Woodhouse and Barry would be a great start.

  Disagree completely. I was at a social function last night with a diverse range of people, and overwhelmingly, people were supportive of Key for getting out when he has.
  
  Going early would play into Labour and the media’s hands. Why would English want to do that when he has a majority in the House on issues of confidence and supply and a set of Crown accounts that are the envy of the developed world?

While everyone’s attention the past week was on the change on the National Party Leadership, there was an excellent article on Zerohedge on the same day titled Something Strange Is Taking Place In The Mediterranean which I thought I’d wait a few days to comment on.

It tells the story of the “rescue efforts” of the “refugees” in the Mediterranean and how so called “rescues” take place:

The report elicited outrage from almost all of the readers. But just like many here on GD, the many of the readers repeat the infuriating fallacy that the invasion is due to stupidity on the part of Europe’s leaders. But these people are not dumb, they’re not stupid, and they’re not stumbling into what will be a challenge of existential dimensions. No.

I’m only reporting the news as I’ve found it. I’ve been all over the place and sometimes I don’t even need to elicit the topic of leadership, replacement, the state of the country etc. The level of support for Winnie is staggering.

There will be a lot of talk about 2017 round the BBQs this summer. This is when people will be looking at their country and make dispassionate observations about the state of it after 8 years of Key.

I suspect it will be:

I hear that Michael Cullen’s daughter was elected to the board of N.Z.’s most profitable co-op dairy company on Thursday. She joins John Luxton (formerly a National Minister of Police) on the board of Tatua.
And further gossip from my area; Tauhei Hall was packed out last Sunday to hear Winston speak. I was told that, like an old Lothario, he knew which buttons to push. Racial separatism in resource consents got a good bashing. And, why do you farmers need a Fonterra head office in N.Z.s most expensive real estate, viz, The Viaduct. The sorts of things that ring alarm bells amongst cockies.

  At least farmers have their own interpretation of ‘draining the swamp’, and that is to create more productive land. The Greens of course see any swamp as ‘wetlands’, even a large puddle fits the bill. There is discontent in the provinces, of which cocky English should be keenly aware.

I’m sure raising the youth justice age will help to deal with savage scum like this as instead of the torturing them with a family group conference they will probably now be given a good behaviour bond with the promise of a play station to follow if they abide by it for a week.

    But the fact remains that these kids come from sexist cultures that believe males are entitled to have sex with as many females as they please, and not bother to use contraception or take care of the resulting offspring.
    Who, without any fatherly guidance, and a mum concentrating on finding another partner instead of caring for her kids (despite being PAID quite well to do so), inevitably end up running wild and trashing trains….
    The only solution is to force these chauvinist men to pay for their own kids or jail them until they do, or have a vasectomy.

        It is significant that one of Charles Murray’s later books is called “Coming Apart: the State of White America”.
        
        He chronicles the trends in family breakdown, achievement levels in education and income, and crime, among white Americans only – seeing his work prior had been routinely dismissed as “racist”.
        
        It is quite clear what is going on, regardless of whether it is allowable or not, to note that different cultures experience this collapse at different rates.

        I know plenty of people from broken homes who did not become vandals.
        Once again it has to come down to culture and values.
        One of the things I dislike most about sexist cultures is the way so many of the parents have hordes of kids, and don’t even care for them.
        They leave it to the older children to raise the younger ones, missing much of their education and taking out their resentment on the kids they have to babysit.
        The kids basically run wild because they have little parental input and even when they do, often it is mostly abuse.
        No wonder the kids end up on the streets.
        They know they are not wanted at home, except for the income they bring in.

I read a story last week about how the Government had been apparently been hacked and it will have a effect in the next election, this by a person with history and making a mockery of our Justice system but not a word from Andrew Little so is this good coming from a Leader in waiting to become our Prime Minister or is it a sign that he thinks crime is alright unless it happens to Labour.

I find the sentencing notes very interesting particularly para 15 where the psychiatrist says there is nothing to suggest a personality disorder.

I also wonder why all guns were not taken from him when he fired warning shots at someone. A person who fires warning shots at someone has a personality disorder.

Unless you are a fonterra shareholder, it’s none of your business where they have their head office.
As a large corporate entity with many overseas visitors, I can assume these people want to visit a vibrant city and be entertained in the level they get overseas while visiting other corporates. It’s all about being seen as successful in the eyes of your prospective customers.
I don’t think an office in Morrinsville or Whykickamoocow will have the desired affect.

  But consider the neighbouring dairy farmers on Number Seven Road at Waitoa. They both rise early to milk their cows; they both go through calving problems; they make and store silage, and consider carefully their artificial breeding plans.
  One of them supplies a dairy company with its head office in N.Z.’s most expensive real estate, viz Auckland. He holidays at the local hot springs near Matamata.
  The other supplies Tatua, who have their head office near Te Aroha. He holidays in Europe or Asia.
  When told that a successful company must have a head office on expensive real estate he retorts;

The World Heavyweight Boxing title goes on the line today – not only in Auckland, but also in Manchester, England: http://www.bbc.com/sport/boxing/38263146 .

Strange how NZ’s media has remained very quiet about this – most people in this country would think that Parker v. Ruiz was the ultimate decider in world heavyweight boxing. Mind you, the BBC is rather quiet as well about an encounter taking place far away in Auckland on the same day as its own local event.

There seems to be a conspiracy within boxing (and its friends in the media) to leave the general public in general ignorance about the status of the ‘World Title’ fights. A quick look at wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heavyweight_boxing_champions reveals that there are two currently-reigning ‘World Heavyweight Champions’ . Neither of them is fighting in Auckland this evening.

Remember, there were those in public roles who wanted Parker v. Ruiz to be financed by NZ taxpayers or Auckland ratepayers.

      On Charter Schools and education generally, I would be critical of Key’s 8 years in that they have proceeded so cautiously and treated their opponents so politely. John Howard on education and other areas of reform, seemed to be following Roger Douglas’s dictum that reforms must be done boldly and wholesale so there is a chance that their success will win everyone round. Otherwise, apart from everything else, you present an appearance of not really believing in them anyway.

I see they are going to demolish the car park damaged by the earthquake without removing the cars. Questions to be asked are 1) Is the building so unstable its collapse is imminent?
2) If so, why has it not collapsed with the after shocks already?
3) If I decide to remove my car at my own risk why can’t I? ( I can swim in the sea at my own risk, walk on the edge of a volcano or drive in Auckland traffic at my own risk. )
4) Are they going to be replaced with identical models and who is going to pay? Insurance will leave them worse off.
5) Which memeber of the circle jerk is making these decisions? ( The same wankers that insrtucted the Army where it could and could not go, I suppose)
6) Is it time for civilians to tell these morons to get fucked?

  2) Just because it hasn’t collapsed doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous
  3) The building owner/manager is legally responsible for the safety of anyone on the premises
  4) If your insurance policy will leave you worse off for the loss, perhaps you should have paid for a different policy

1) Traffic on ramps – why?
2) Red Turn Right Lights -Why remain stationary when there are no on coming vehicles. At some interesections we have to engage our brains and make that decision, why not all?
3) Why no Left Turn on Red ( as in may countries) if no traffic?
Once again who makes thse stupid rules? and why cant we see best practice in other countries and copy that. Sick of being treated like a moron by the bunch that make these rules.

  Which genius in Dunedin set up the lights so that pedestrians cross at the same time as turning traffic is on a green light? It means that by the time all of the pedestrians have wandered across, the lights have turned back to red for the cars.
  
  Earlier this year they upgraded the lights at a 5 way intersection down here. Whilst the lights were out, they put in a temporary roundabout. The traffic flowed much more smoothly – until the lights were turned back on again.

    However good the country is economically and indeed we are truly lucky to live here there are still problems to be fixed socially and the government of the past eight years despite the need for careful management could have done better. As one of the lucky ones I voted National the past few times but I can still see the problems that have not even been partially addressed thanks to the selfish attitudes of the ‘right’.
    Without John Key to moderate the extremes of his team I for one doubt if they will get my vote next time, nor will Labour ….that leaves ????? … not Greens either.

The usual bunch of scribbling weasels are peeing their pants over the J Key “political/economic legacy”, and well they might. But will the five or six major Cabinet changes expected next week be “steady as she goes” ??? I doubt it. They will almost certainly suggest (foreshadow?) further change, possibly including leadership, in 2019. W English has 18 months to demonstrate that he has the force of personality necessary for the job, namely winning again in 2020.

Next week will be his first test. His second test will involve replacing some time-servers and idiots on the NP Board. They latter may be more difficult than the former. Some individuals will attempt to settle age old vendettas. But those folk no longer draw water.

But none of that will be comforting to Labour. As one MP put it in an email to me last night:
“This week has been one hell of an experience. I don’t think the opposition can grasp how we could manage to go through resignation announcement, debates & discussions and selection of a new leader within 70-odd hours, all the while projecting that it was under control, rapid but not rushed and looking both managed and fair. Makes their process look even more shambolic than it is. And on Monday after our caucus meeting we will emerge united behind our new leader and deputy. Labour will be spitting.

Keeping Stock

This is a really uplifting story, about the John Key you never really heard about; certainly not from all the haters:

It was C.S. Lewis who once said “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

This is perhaps the greatest lesson I have learnt from our outgoing Prime Minister John Key, a man who changed my life by doing just that.

When I was 15 years old, on Saturday September 4, 2010, my father, Rod Miller, died in a skydiving plane crash in Fox Glacier, which killed nine people.

It was the worst plane crash New Zealand had experienced in 17 years, and it tore many people apart

It was a rough time for New Zealand. The very same day Christchurch experienced its first major earthquake, destroying the city. And just over one month later, the West Coast was hit with another tragedy, after 29 men died in the Pike River mine disaster.

It was how Key reacted to these terrible tragedies, particularly the one closest to my heart, where I first began to truly respect him, and appreciate him as a remarkable leader.

Following the plane crash, Key took the four-hour return drive from Hokitika to Fox Glacier to visit the crash site, and pay his respects to the victims.

Key’s humanness and kindness inspired me during this difficult time, so I wrote to him as a 15-year-old, thanking him for caring, while asking him for some advice in regards to my own future.

I was amazed to receive a very personal letter back directly from the prime minister.

Not only did he address all of my points issue by issue in an extremely kind and personal way, but he also enclosed a card, saying he wanted to meet me.

Several months later, Key, while visiting the West Coast to see the victims’ families of the Pike River mine disaster, came to our family home in Greymouth for whitebait sandwiches, a cup of tea and a chat about my future.

He didn’t publicise the visit for political profit. No media were invited. He did it out of the goodness of his heart, because he wanted to help, and because he cared.

It was the goodness of Key’s heart that inspired me to try my hardest in life, and strive to be the best version of me that I could be.

I vividly remember being inspired by the fact that Key had lost his father as a young kid, before achieving his childhood dream. I remember thinking, ‘if he could, why couldn’t I?’

  Another story comes from a decade ago when he’d just been elected National Leader. At the time our builder had gifted us a year’s subscription to North and South and one edition had Key on the front cover.
  
  But it was a letter to the editor in the following monthly edition that caught my eye and stuck with me. It was from a guy now living in Australia, who’d worked beside Key in one of his early jobs at Canterbury (the clothing firm). Key’s job was “production co-ordinator”, a not very glamorous job of getting raw materials and production sorted out between the various South Island factories.
  
  The story went that the Yanks were very demanding about their shipments being on-time and exact, or the whole order would be rejected, and there came a time when “shit happened”. One West Coast factory informed Key that last minute stuff ups meant they’d not get their part of the package – about twenty cartons of rugby jerseys – to Chch airport in time for the flight to the USA. A 7am deadline was it and it looked like the whole consignment was stuffed because there no transport options that could meet it.

  And he hasn’t done anything.
  
  That’s why he’s politically popular. Because he’s not spent any political capital ever, on anything. And since there are so many things which require changing, that’s not acceptable, in my view.

Messrs McCabe and McLauchlan were too polite to mention it, but Susan Baldacci and Jim Mora are the last people in the country who should be pontificating about a lack of empathy for the suffering of others….

Out of a dolphin’s blow hole

Interesting correction in the Christchurch Press today:

On November 18, the Press published a story on a proposed marine reserve which quoted a Forest and Bird advocate stating that “up to 170 Hector’s dolphins are caught in nets every year.”

In fact, Department of Conservation’s marine mammal database has 186 reports of Hector’s dolphins being caught by recreational and commercial fishermen since 1973, an average of 4.4 each year.

Life for high born hostages at the court of the Sultans was not that hard – except for the permanent danger of being killed in case the father did not behave. And the boy climbed a tree nearby and stayed hidden. Only after the Emperor left, the boy descended and walked away and then came back to the court and again he was the Emperor’s favourite. (…)

It’s not clear if Radu became in the end Mehmed the Conqueror‘s lover – most probably he did. The sharp tongued Romanians nicknamed Radu „the Handsome”, an ironic reference to his past as the Sultan’s favourite. (Radu the Handsome got eventually married to a Serbian princess and had a daughter that married the ruler of Moldova, Stephen the Great). One cannot refrain to speculate what the history would have been if Radu the Handsome had managed a deeper cut into Mehmed the Conqueror’s thigh – perhaps Constantinople would have had a chance against the Ottomans.
