  I was tempted to point out here that Labour has only just get into government and already the trains are on strike (!!!) etc…. but then I looked into it and I can see why they’re striking.
  
  AT plans to reduce all the Auckland rail services to ‘driver only’ trains. Think about it. ONE person only manning each train and NO additional staff like ticket inspectors, security or the information staff that help old people and people with bags etc.
  
  What if someone slips or gets stuck when boarding? Someone with 3 kids needing assistance? Someone gets taken ill? A group of kids starts harassing passengers and scratching all the windows?
  
  Call me old fashioned (and some here will call me a leftie too -I can take it), but AT really needs to rethink this strategy. They’re there to provide a service, not only to make a profit, and by and large the people who do these jobs are performing a useful function in life.

    I believe the rational is they will have proper train security now. Train managers are not allowed to get involved with confrontations.
    The security people will move in numbers (more than 1) be on most peak trains and random on less popular trains.
    As far as the doors opening and closing, there are cameras covering those so the driver can see.

    Dave, sorry, but you’ve been reading the misinformation propaganda put out by RMT.
    
    1. The AT Metro trains have always been fitted to be driver only trains, like any other metro system in the world.
    
    2. Current AT Train management staff have 3 jobs: (I) train announcements; (ii) open doors; and (iii) close doors;
    
    3. Train management staff are not: (i) ticket inspectors; (ii) have no powers to deal with incidents on trains & indeed are instructed to withdraw & can ask for help via onboard radio if they can. There is only 1 train manager per train;
    
    4. AT are in the process of employing, training & deploying up to 230 Transport Officers who have the legal powers to inspect tickets, deal with fare evaders & any trouble on trains. These officers will able to be deployed in numbers to services where there are known issues; and
    
    5. Any changes to onboard train staffing will occur only once NZTA is satisfied that AT & Transdev have put in place systems to ensure train & passenger safety is not compromised by the withdrawal of train managers.
    
    I know this because I work for AT Transport Services, which is responsible for Auckland’s buses, ferries & trains.

      Thanks for the clarification hullkiwi. I’m not entirely convinced that there will still be sufficient staff manning the trains (in sufficient numbers), but you know more about it than I do, so I bow to your better knowledge. Cheers!

I love it how nowadays nobody can simply be ‘staff’ or a ‘worker’. hey have to be called ‘Train Managers’ although by the sound of it they’re not allowed to ‘manage’ anything at all or actually do anything much. But suppose at least they present a human face and they’re not (yet) substituted by robots 😀

        Dave no problem, I’m with you, it’s an American thing whereby nobody is a clerk, they are an executive officer etc.
        
        As for train safety, systems at unmanned stations will involve video monitors linked to the cabs of the drivers. For stations like Newmarket they will have platform staff (much like London).
        
        I was talking to a colleague yesterday about, & the situation today, is because AT & the politicians didn’t want to confront the issues when they bought the trains 4 years ago.

  It was quieter than normal on the Northern motorway even though the North Shore has no trains. I conclude that trains are the main cause of traffic congestion in Auckland. They should be banned.

        Maybe he just has personal difficulties dealing with self-centred, domineering women, but whatever is the issue it’s not an obvious leadership trait to be useful in a female-dominated caucus.

  They’re doing very well aren’t they? Everything going according to plan (NOT). And I’m loving seeing snippets of their appalling performance in the House. Ardern certainly has a comprehension problem. She can’t give a straight answer. God knows what she’s thinking when she completely ignores the question and replies with a load of rubbish. I’m confused. And Mallard, is performing very badly in his new role.
  This current, very non-transparent Govt appears to be way out of its depth. How the hell they’re going to be able to keep this up for the next 3 years is a bit of a worry.

  Only the start VP. Now they want to make Parliament a “safe space” by changing the entire process as well as the seating arrangements. According to Red Radio old WP too has a vision as seen on some drink sodden overseas trips. Likewise the Commie Chick thinks it should be more inclusive under MMP with more cross party activity.
  The big danger is how much damage they can do with the power they have to our democratic process. It would make passing the buck easier.

    Peter, I beg to differ. My bet is that by 2019, the conclusion will still be manned entry is still unsafe. However, that will not be the end of it (we’re talking govt bureaucracy here), so what they will do is kick the cab further into the mine (figuratively speaking). This will be by a report saying manned entry is not possible at this time, but the development new & emerging (which will not be specified) technologies may mean unmanned entry into the mine may be possible in the future. The future date being 2021-2, so well after the next election. Just like turkeys don’t vote for Christmas, bureaucracies do not write themselves out of existence.

Watching Parliamentary Question Time leaves me with the distinct impression that whereas the National Opposition take a generally serious, considered and intelligent approach to the business of parliament, the Coalition government is full of snide, petulant and disorganised charlatans. All of this presided over by an inept Speaker in Trevor Mallard.

Phil Twyford must be the most unpleasant, sneering individual ever to occupy a parliamentary seat.

  Watched it this week and it was a farce. If the questions get too pointed the speakers rules them out. The Government does not answer the questions, they just lashes out against the previous government. The speaker lets them get away with it.
  The best thing that National could do is not turn up.
  Mallard is a chump, Winston is the only one who laughs at his own jokes and agreed Twyford is a prick.

  In the old days all this messing about in parliament was pretty much hidden from view. You had to read the official proceedings or newspaper articles to get a sense of what happened.
  
  Now it’s all accessible on youtube and people can see what sort of pathetic behaviour comes from people on $300k per year.

  I thought the first question time that Mallard wasn’t so bad but it’s been all downhill from there.
  
  Yesterday’s handling of Question 11 from Nick Smith was abysmal.
  
  Having answered the original question Minister O’Connor did not answer the supplementary question, could not answer the question with any credibility, and was sheltered from having the coalition’s lies exposed by Mallard.
  
  Mallard simply insisted he had answered and refused to allow more supplementary questions.
  
  However National need to find better strategies to dealing with the speaker than having Simon Bridges making points of order which take them no where useful.

    Yes Amberergris it reached a new low with question 11 yesterday and Mallard lost the plot completely. The first supplementary was clear and concise as previously directed by the Speaker but it was not addressed in the answer. A policy speech is not an answer.
    No the Points Of Order are essential and the only form of redress at the time, in the House. He is trying to control these just like his childish antics with supplementary question trading.

It was galling enough when democracy loving NZs had to suck up the type of “selected” Government forced on the Nation of NZ by the meglamaniac known as Peters.
That has proven each day in Parliaments so called debating chamber,to be as disastrous as the decision of “here is me and who is like me” Peters.
Peters role as a “funny hahahaha clown” at question time,is being ursurped by an even more lousy “funny peculiar clown” called Mallard.
Mallard as the so called “Speaker” is so inept inane and stupid, his rulings have become a sad day for NZs democracy.
What was the meglamaniac Peters thinking when he selected such a group of “Coalition of Confusion and Corruption” deadbeats.
Tune into Parliament next Tuesday to watch the pre school Peters “selected”clowns perform in a farcial performance of a Government that would even put Kim from North Korea to shame.

Is there any sense in the speed restrictions on SH1 for roadworks?
I’ve driven the Auckland to Wellington six times in the past six months. Every time there have been significant roadworks going on, every time on dual carriageway areas there has been effective separation of traffic and workers, and every time there has been a speed limit reduction of 20-30%.

I tend toward the compliant in regards to traffic laws, so I observe these reductions; however, I am amazed by the number of drivers who don’t. While I can agree with restrictions on single-lane-each-way stretches of road I have great doubts as to the need for the dual-carriageway sections. However, they are there and should be observed.

Perhaps the new government should establish a new revenue department to issue and collect fines for those exceeding these temporary limits. Might be enough in it to pay for a few thousand ‘affordable’ homes. I would prefer they get sensible and remove them.

  The temporary speed limits would be determined by the certificated temporary signage contractors who must bear in mind both the safety of workers, the potential for damage to temporary or new surfaces and to help avoid damage to vehicles by flying stones etc. If they are being flouted to the extent that there is significant danger then the contractor hopefully would ask the Police to take enforcement action. The client (Transport Authority or Council) or Police could also review the temporary limits especially where the contractor has not removed unnecessary limits at the end of the working day.
  It is extremely galling to be overtaken by a vehicle flouting these restrictions and throwing up stones into your windscreen.

  It was in a temp speed restriction zone.
  It could’ve been demerits and $570 fine but he let me off.
  just a bit of a wake up call.
  The speeding offence is calculated from the temp speed!
  Luckily he believed me that I couldn’t see my speedo as it was borrowed and didn’t know how to adjust the hieght.

When the preceding years were largely static massive speculative house building would have been criticised and a waste of resources.

  Might be just me, but Catcher in the Rye is a seriously shitty over-rated book to be inspired (if that’s the right word) to kill Lennon.
  
  Also, in response to someone a few months ago who said the White Album was the greatest rock album of all time, I finally got around to accessing the step daughter’s Spotify account and had a chance to re-listen a couple of times after many years. Yeah, nah. Great in parts, seriously flawed in others with some filler and (to quote Lennon) “Paul’s granny music shit”. But Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ain’t that bad – not as bad as Maxwell’s Silver Hammer from Abbey Road – and that is a brilliant album even with/because of that song.
  
  Put it this way, whereas Abbey Road has the one flaw that adds to its charm, the White Album has too many flaws to be considered great. Ok, it is an experimental album, but too mnay misses. But when it gets it right – Back in the USSR, Revolution 1, Happiness is Warm Gun, Helter Skelter (what is it about the Beatles inspiring psychos?!), While my Guitar Gently Weeps, it is brilliant. The bitcoin ponzi keeps growing. Due to the limits on how many transactions can be processed a second, there is a huge backlog of unprocessed transactions. About all you can do, is hold your coins on an exchange if you hope to cash out in a timely manner before the crash. Both the high transaction fees required to jump the queue in the backlog, and the size of the backlog make moving coins in a timely manner prohibitive.

A modern decentralised technology that has become centralised to a small number of exchanges by it’s politically limited transaction rate.

Grab some popcorn, this is going to get interesting. Mainstream future markets open in the next day or so, and that’s going to exacerbate the problems.

      I agree with you in principle. I’ve always viewed it as a high risk speculative investment with money you’d be prepared to lose. I plan to hang in there, not knowing if it will pay off or not. It appeals to my libertarian side too 🙂
      
      There’s obviously more crypto options than bitcoin, to spread the risk. Some of them have instant transaction processing – such as “Dash”.
      
      Apparently, as of Dec 1oth The Chicago Board Options Exchange will start trading bitcoin futures, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on Dec 18th. So maybe, if you really believe the sky is about to fall on Bitcoin, you could make some good money out of your prediction. All the best.

  My 3 year old computer of modest specs does 7 million very large arithmetic operations / second. I checked it as I was coding the encryption for an otherwise alterable accounting ledger to enforce audit requirements. When the transaction was finished being keyed no apparent delay was acceptable.

Both of those will take several months to get implemented and started. It naive to think that any government, National or Labour, can get much done between the election and Christmas. I always thought I would never live to see a worse Speaker of the House than Dr Gerry Wall. Margaret Wilson threatened Wall’s tenure, but did not throw members out of the House frequently enough to qualify.

Mallard has yet to expel anyone from the Chamber, but after a promising first couple of days his speakership has gone downhill fast. Denying Nick Smith the opportunity to ask additional supplementary questions yesterday was a display of partisanship from Mallard, and does not bode well for the office of Speaker to be held in high regard.

Sadly IMHO we have lost our way as regards social and economic reform over the past 30 years.

One remembers the 84/87 Lange Government that did so much to drag us into the 20th Century. Alas the reforms ended when the Cabinet fell apart………………….well the older ones and students of political history know why.

Then we got MMP. So now every policy had to be watered down to meet the demands of minority parties sometimes parties with less support than the margin of error.

Then we had the spectacle of a party who 93% didnt vote for getting to chose who governed.

So now we have the worst of the worst. A disperate group with widely differing philosophies who cant agree what day of the week it is governing.

The new result will be bad policy.

I give you the tax system as an example.

The Lange Government set the exemplar of simple uncomplicated easy to comply with and administer.

Now we have complication with moves to increase the complication with WFF.

This leads to gaming the system, difficulty in enforcement so added costs and lack of understanding.

And this is just one of many areas. MMP has not produced quality reforms for the benefit of all or the vast majority as the Lange Government did.

It has resulted in minorities and interest groups getting what they want at the expense of the majority.

  We got MMP as a result of a populist revolt by Kiwis fed up with both parties ignoring them and pursuing economic policies the majority did not want. Neither Rogernomics nor Ruthenasia were popular with the majority of voters, and the result of that unpopularity was MMP. That MMP curtials the ability of governments to pursue unpopular policies with little democratic approval is an improvement. Like it or not, MMP gives us more, not less, democracy. Even in a situation like the recent election with Peters holding the balance of power, we still ended up with a coaltion which, together, represents the majority of voters.

    The two side of the House are different: national has fresh faces with ability. Labour are forgetting this is not an activist street march. A higher quality is required for Government.

      Electoral candidates are also chosen by their parties, if in other ways. And the parties themselves, both list and electoral candidates, face scrutiny during the election. I’m open to looking at ways to improve the system, but it’s still far more geneuinely representitive than FPP was. Remember that FPP gave us two terms of a Muldoon government that had lost the popular vote by a wide margin.
      
      A higher quality is required for Government.
      
      Quality can be subjective. Partisans on both sides will insist their side is better.

  Yes I heartily agree. I campaigned for MMP as an activist way back when it was introduced and now I utterly regret it. MMP is a bastard system which has reached its nadir in the ridiculous appointment of a losing party by a guy with less than 10% electoral support.
  
  MMP makes a mockery of true democracy, but there’s very little chance that it will be repealed now because our politicians see it as their chance to play their endless little ego games at the expense of the voters.
  
  I (and probably thousands like me) just didn’t account for the opportunity that MMP offers the venal self serving elements in our political classes. Sorry.

    Prior to MMP neither of the major parties came anywhere near 50% popular support so it was obvious that they would require mates to form a government.
    This particular election the Nats lost, not because of NZF, but because Labour was able to demolish the Maori Party & Peter Dunne. Dunne has probably passed his used by date & Brash probably didn’t do the MP any favours. A vote for the MP was a vote for Nats which is kind of linked to Hobson’s Choice.

    Polynesia is dropping diacritical marks and it is considered bad form to use them unnecessarily when they do not otherwise affect the meaning.

Which is like recognising London as the capital of Britain, Rome for Italy, Paris for France and Athens for Greece. Yet only a week ago to appease the Turks, Trump cut support to the Kurds. The Kurds have done the Lionshare of the fighting against ISIS while Turkey refused to help. In many cases Kurdish girls made up entire battalions while the rest of the world took a cowardly approach. These Kurds were fighting for their own country just like the French resistance. And when a Russian plane was shot down for shading Turkish airspace last year, Russia released satellite footage of ISIS oil tanker convoys having unimpeded border entry to Turkey, which kept the mongrels financed to kill westerners. These blood hypocrites.

The sooner we dispense with Turkey the better. Kurdistan can become Israel #2.

Can any journalist, or anyone else for that matter, explain why it was in the public interest to publicise Wintons Peters’ glitch with the MSD on payment of his superannuation?

The whole matter was apparently “done and dusted history”, with a departmental letter commending Winston for his prompt co-operation, before it reached the media, and was an exemplary reaction when compared to Metiria’s amoral mess.

Given that comparison, publicity of Winstons’ incident could have been to his Election campaign advantage.

But only after he had reacted as he did.
If it was in the public interest, as the journalists claim, to reveal information on such personal matters, then it is also in the public interest to reveal who supplied them, particularly if that leak was before Winston knew and the leak then had the potential to sway an Election.. There may be evidence there to overturn s68(2) of the Evidence Act.

But the point remains, why was Winston’s case mentioned when it was, and to what public good, especially when the other 52,000 cases of overpayments, roughly $32m worth, were only lightly covered.

Committee chairwoman Miriyana Alexander said journalists had a fundamental right to protect their sources, and could claim privilege under the Evidence Act to do so.

Such cases usually involve a leak or the illegal hacking of information
and based in a public “need-to-know” warrants it, in this case, the revelation of who leaked the information, and why, is definitely more important than what was leaked.

Alert for Southland ratepayers!

A new arts organisation is talking of getting $600,000 a year from the Invercargill City Council capital budget (for roads, sewerage, water, library facilities etc, etc) to spend on art in public facilities.

Lisa Tou-McNaughton, executrive officer of Arts Murihiku (Murihiku is the Maori name for Southland), suggests in a new column in the Southland Times today that Invercargill should emulate the Rotorua Council’s public arts policy – “Per cent for the Arts”. Tou-McNaughton says this would mean 1 per cent from the council’s capital budget going to fund public art in new and existing infrastructure projects. In Invercargill this would mean about $600,000 a year extra to fund “the arts”.

“Similarly, this could be introduced region wide,” she adds enthusiastically.

“They had a whole lot of ideas, a whole lot of promises they made, well intended, but it is a lot harder to do it.”

“Once you’re in Government and you have to act on it and you’ve got officials telling you actually you can’t do that…We’ve seen some big problems in the House.”

“They’re definitely feeling the pressure,” Ms Bradford said, with the massive amount of promises due by February 3 – 100 says since they took power.

Is anyone noticing the orange tinge in the air?

When I lived in Sydney it always indicated fires somewhere. If they were really close the tinge was much more intense and ash floated in the air.

More recently when there have been fires in NZ or even Australia, that tinge has been there sometimes.

However, as far as I can tell, there currently are no nearby fires. Except for the massive fires in California, which are quite a distance away.

Or is there an out of control fire somewhere closer?

I watched this BBC Four series on You tube, thinking it would be interesting to see the 1930s in colour film. Harry Wright was the millionaire who could afford colour film back then, and the commentators never let you forget his wealth. The UK university mouth pieces spoke with sarcasm and sneering about terrible ‘colonialism’. The couple of American speakers by comparison were positive, especially the comments on old Hawaii life. I got the impression BBC4 is a very slanted channel, and I can see how university students have set views on politics.

Hoping someone can clarify something for me regarding Parliamentary QT….I just wish to see if I’m correct in my assumption. I used to get annoyed with the time wasting questions from opposition MP’s of ‘Does the minister stand by all their statements’, now 3 questions:
1: All ministers get the questions beforehand, and this is all they see?
2: it’s the follow up question they haven’t seen, the right hook as it were after the initial jab?
3: So said minister stating that they stand by their statements, a statement is quoted by them from the opposition questioner as they then ask the REAL question that the minister has had no knowledge nor time to prepare for?
Hopefully I’m correct, the Govt. can’t see EVERY question levelled at them surely?!

  Ministers have to guess what a question like “Does she stand by all her statements” is aiming for and guess what the supplementary questions are. It will probably be around one of the issues of the day, forcing the Minister to remember what they’ve said about.
  
  Questions from government backbenchers are a lot easier. The primary and supplementary questions are usually written in the Minister’s office and farmed out to a junior MP to ask their colleague, to make the government look good or attack an opposition spokesman

INCOMES UNDER-REPORTED
New Zealand’s average household incomes were reported lower than they actually are in an error made by Stats NZ. They fixed that error today. Average household income from all sources is actually $107,759 per year, and the median from all sources is $86,392 pa. These numbers are +$5,962 or +6.0% more as at June 2017 than were originally reported. This update means that ‘only’ 7.4% of people who own houses spend more than 40% of their incomes on housing, and 18.3% of renters do that. (However, those that spend 40% or more of their income on housing generate 100% of the discussion.) Even more interestingly, ten years ago those two numbers were 7.9% and 18.2%. So in fact, housing cost pressure on households has not increased in the last decade.

So today not only have we yesterdays revelation that there re 20,000 less kids in poverty we now have a lot more people above the poverty line and more able to purchase a house than we did a month ago.
We have to wonder how many performance indicators about ourselves are wrong.
