Right of way is Way of Right

There are two stories currently jockeying for position in the NZ Media.

One story is how the proposed ban on foreign investment will have a significant effect on our economy going forward.

The other is how Princess Pearly-Whites is going from island to island handing out money to our pacific neighbours like there’s no tomorrow! Did the Air Force fit one of the 757’s with a printing press??

So, can someone please explain this to me? I am somewhat befuddled.

Why is it that foreign countries invest in our country, creating jobs, stimulating the economy and increasing our GDP, it’s somehow a BAD thing. But when we sent our PM all over the South Pacific handing out what, to them, is ‘foreign’ money, and expecting no tangible return on our investment at all, and it’s done so under little or no oversight or ongoing governance, that’s a GOOD thing???

The lack of simple logic in this government is doing my head in.

  “Princess PW” and her CoL don’t seem to have alot of creativity to rely on, and as they have discovered a bucket full of cash left under Bill’s desk, they are handing it out willy nilly before anybody calls out to them to account for it !

    What appropriation is the money coming out of?
    All public money is required to be voted by Parliament or have special arrangements made for post approval.

      Money cannot be readily diverted from vote item to vote item. Parliament not Government pre-approves expenditure in separate defined items which are voted on during the budget stages each year. The Government proposes: Parliament disposes.

  For a start GDP is thrown about as measure when it is the wrong measure.Foreign countries buy up our country at our expense ,create service sector jobs in the main which then feeds on itself or they buy up our land eg grapes,dairy,forestry,farms , horticulture then employ kiwis at the minimum wage and take profits offshore.
  Croaking Cassandra has good articles on GDP.Our economy has had no growth for years but there has been a huge transfer of wealth.

    Interesting how many Pacific islands don’t allow foreigners freehold ownership. I agree that Kiwis shouldn’t be selling off our actual land to foreign ownership. Encourage them to start businesses here, if it will really help NZ, but surely our land is too precious to just sell off?

  It’s nothing to do with buying the PI vote back in New Zealand. It’s to do with the fact that we have finally recognised the massively increasing influence of China at our back door.
  
  China is investigating billions all through the Pacific, both in straightforward aid programmes and also commercial investment – food production, fishing etc – in the islands and this will enable them not only to count on more diplomatic support in their confrontation with the US in the South China Sea, but ultimately possibly the goal of military or quasi-military bases.
  
  Whether the tooth fairy will have any success remains to be seen…. but I’m sure that this is the purpose of the trip. Expect similar from Australia in the coming months too.

Please tell me why people who have never paid tax in New Zealand need us to pay for their pensions?
Parliament resumes in a couple of weeks. Amy will be well primed to rip Sweetcheeks to bits, and the rest of the new National lineup will be all guns blazing.

  Pension payments in Raro have been contentious for years. The lifestyle there does not require the same means so those getting the same rate as in NZ are going to be unjustly rich and upset the local status and economy. All this would have been in the archives.

  I’d be interested to know if the new requirements affect Ross Ardern’s super qualification; he has been out of New Zealand since 2004 and must be about the age where most of that was between 50 and 60.

    As much as I despise Ross Ardern, the residency rules don’t apply to public servants whose role requires them to live abroad. I would be quite happy for him to get the pension and stay in Niue.

    The Superannuation and Retirement Act require the same residency requirements for NZ citizens, permanent residents, and specific pacific islands as they call them. There may be some slightly different provisions for veterans as they may spend a lot of time out of the country in service but I have not looked them up and that may apply to Ardern as he is there on public service or they may come under the specific pacific island category anyway.
    
    This is 10 years residency past the age of 20 and five years past the age of 50.
    
    The rules if specific pacific islands get this 5 years past 50 years requirement waived will create two classes of citizens. One will be the kiwi born who will be stuck with extra requirements for residency past the age of 50 and must come back home from whereever they are if they want to be eligible and one that is privileged with not having to do that if they are from Niue, Tokelau or the Cook Islands.

Why are taxpayers paying for Gay Clarkford to swan around the islands with Crockery. He is not a spouse, he may be living with an illegitimate PM, he may be father of her illegitimate sprog, but that does not entitle him to leech like a pig off taxpayers.

    I think that it was over on WO (could even have been the Herald when it was still a real newspaper) that they published the some of receipts obtained via the OIA from one of Carter’s junkets with his mate. The champagne room service breakfast for two at the Oriental Hotel (Bangkok’s very finest hotel) really got me. A classic example of elitist socialism more commonly called entitlitis.

  If a Prime Minister’s wife would normally be entitled to join her husband on such a trip, then there is no case to question Jacinda’s travel arrangements. in this modern day and age formal marriage is no longer a requirement to confirm a partnership. Referring to Jacinda’s forthcoming baby as an ‘illegitimate sprog’ is to say the least completely tasteless in today’s world. The barbaric practice of branding such children ‘illegitimate’ (including the use of the term on birth certificates) has thankfully long since ceased. All children have equal rights regardless of the circumstances of conception and to discriminate against particular children on this basis is an affront to their human rights.

      It’s been sort of interesting. In the years that I’ve been on Kiwiblog, National was government most of the time. Regular “reports” of goings on at the Standard (don’t go there myself) documented what a nasty, petty, trivial group of people they were. Although KB was never a bastion of good will to all, lately it’s been dire. Seems it wasn’t so much a left/right thing as a govt/oppo thing, I guess.

        I concur, although I doubt I would cohabitate with someone outside of marriage myself. But to me it is irrelevant,
        when it comes to assessing Ardern’s competence (there are plenty of relevant other factors to decide she is incompetent!). Better to be ruled by a competent Turk than an incompetent Christian prince (Martin Luther, alleged).
        
        But, yes, if you do think the legal status of Ardern’s relationship with her partner is an issue, good luck to you. Your call, and yes,it invites scrutiny of the one who makes that judgement But then good luck again persuading someone as deluded and lacking in self critique as Chuck Bird, or a facist like Rodney Randell that their values, attitudes and attempts to restrict the lawful and legitimate practice of others are also that of conservative Muslims!
        
        Oh, yes, and due to changes in legislation concerning marriage and parental responsibility, the use of the terms “bastard” and “illegitimate” to describe offspring are nowarchaic. The meaning and applicability of words are subject to change, and do go out of fashion, e.g., “gay”.

      The primary meaning of ‘sprog’ is child and has derogatory or affectionate implications depending on context. It is the term ‘illegitimate’ with respect to a child or person that is highly objectionable.
      Other meanings of ‘sprog’ such as a new military recruit are derived from this. With respect to an engine part, it must be of very limited use as Google sheds no light on what sort of engine part.

    Oh we consider ourselves well and truly told off peterkins for having such old-fashioned untrendy views of marriage and parenthood. Sadly for progressives like you most of the rest of the world still considers it in the child’s best interests that its parents have made a commitment through marriage and that it is simply tasteless to have an unmarried mother to be representing us as PM. What a role model for young girls: ‘If the PM can be an unmarried mother and live off the state then why can’t I?’

    Again, this depends on the usual rules governing Cabinet Ministers’ travel expenses. The ‘worst’ scenario would be the partner’s marginal expenses would need to be met privately and in this case would be little more than meals. What one thinks of the Minister does not come into it.

      More girl babies the better fodder for the future.
      Look at the UK as an example the Muslim birth rate is four times higher than non Muslims.

The craziness of the ban on foreign house buys continues.

Following on from reports of how many additional people the OIO is going to have to employ (not including the various people that support those people (HR, Managers, etc.) those 4700 people, that comes out at a staggering figure of $354,455,200 per year, or $3.5b over 10 years not including pay raises, which we know will be generous, and we all know based on Labours history, this will be the minimum of the spending!

Why not give it to NZ citizens who are first home buyers (about $35k each for the 100,000 homes we’re “short”, which on top of the $20k home start grant, and the money that they have saved in their KiwiSaver (if they don’t have any money saved, they have no business buying a house!) would put most people in a good position to buy a first house.

Have conditions that it can only be used to purchase a new home, and if the property is sold in the first 2 years, the Government has first claim on the $35k.
I’m sure there are many things wrong with this, but overall a simpler approach that just lets people get on with things rather than forming a whole lot of focus groups and committees, and doesn’t fuck the market.

At the very least, questions should be asked about where the $350 million will come from to fun extra staff.

All he achieved was self-ridicule and an admission that he and David Parker do not agree on the scope of this unfortunate foray into a swamp of inconsistencies, financial unreality and xenophobia. The CoL are stupid, frighteningly stupid. They’ll continue with this idiocy in the face of sober criticism from many dispassionate analysts. I am very despondent about what they are doing to NZ.

The wharfies in Lyttleton announce that they’re going on strike. The Port company tells the shipping companies to send their ships somewhere else as they won’t be able to be worked. Then the wharfies say that it’s OK now, we won’t go on strike after all and will report for work. The Port company says you can turn up for work if you like but you won’t get paid because you said you’d be on strike so there’s no work as the ships won’t be there.
Is this the NZ of the future under the Union-led CoL?

That night that Key folded to the relentless pressure to bring in more refugees including Syrians, Key sent a clear message that this would cost an extra $60-80m p.a. then three news stories later on One News Pharmac announced it wouldn’t be funding Keytruda (though now they have) because it was going to cost $60-80m p.a.

    Time we told refugees with more than two children [and Kiwi beneficiaries with more than two] that we don’t hand over taxpayers’ money in the form of a welfare benefit to the parent(s) for more than two. After the second child, the money follows the kid, not the parent. Refugees could be helped financially for their entire brood for, say, two years while they settle in but be made to understand that, after that time, they’re expected to be in work providing for their own. And if they’re not, any welfare money follows the kid(s) and isn’t paid to the parents. We’re too bloody soft.

  They are also screwing all kiwis over with waiving residency requirements to get NZ super in the islands, kiwis will still have the requirements for residency including 5 years after 50 and must comply while they get to collect the cash without it and only 10 years min residency in NZ. Also you have to ignore that all the science is flawed and the models don’t actually model the global temperature change.

  Stephie – have a look at the crime ratio of certain refugee nationality groups in Melbourne vs. crime ratio of general population as an example. You will find that some community groups are greatly over represented in home invasions, aggravated robbery and car thefts.
  We are a few years behind Australia but if we continue down our path this is what I believe will happen in NZ.
  To get the best out of our of Kiwibuild and to ease pressure on our housing crisis we should adapt the Japanese refugee policy for a while. If we find its not working for us we can always open the doors again so they can get straight off the plane to the front of the queue for a house ahead of the Kiwis living in cars.

“Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern has just announced with the stroke of a pen that Pacific Islanders will in the future not have to come to NZ to qualify for National NZ Superannuation. It used to be to qualify 5 years residency in NZ from age 50 to qualify.
“Commie Chic” unilatterly has decided to waive that carved in NZ law criteria.
To think that she has changed legislated NZ Law in favour of Pacific Islanders, as against NZs living in NZ who are out of the country more than six months who have their Super Cancelled ,deserves more scrutiny,and a lot of explaining by “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern.
Starting to look and sound like NZs may have another self appointed Dictator like Peters.

    The problem is under the Superannuation and Retirement Act 2001, all citizens, born in NZ, permanent residents and those in the islands come under the same criteria for residency.     They say “At the moment anyone wanting to access superannuation had to be living in New Zealand for at least five years – despite Niueans being New Zealand citizens.”
    
    Well, yeah, even if you are born here you come under exactly the same criteria. They seem to be assuming the rules are different somehow and we have it easier? More likely Peters is lying or he’s not done his homework as he’s claiming 87,000 have got in in ten years when the Super Act is unequivocal as to the residency requirements.
    
    This creates 2 classes of citizens, one will be the island protectorates whose citizens will have preferential treatment and have only a 10 year residency requirement and the rest, the poor sods born here who will have the 10 year plus the 5 years after 50 requirement. I will become a second class citizen in regards NZ super, having lesser rights than someone born elsewhere in Tokelau, Niue or the Cook Islands.

  So I don’t understand this entirely (years off retirement unless I get a windfall), but I have relatives who in their late 40s and 50s got transferred to Sydney & Melbourne (the UK, US even) with work only to return after 4-8 years and they have all claimed that they have to work for 10 years now. Tucker Carlson points out that men in the U.S, far from being the dominant “patriarchy”, are doing far worse than women at just about every level.

Start with the most basic, life and death. The average American man will die five years before the average American woman. One of the reasons for this is addiction. Men are more than twice as likely as women to become alcoholics. They’re also twice as likely to die of a drug OD. In New Hampshire, one of the states hit hardest by the opioid crisis, 73 percent of overdose deaths were men.

But the saddest reason for shortened life spans is suicide. Seventy-seven percent of all suicides in America are committed by men. The overall rate is increasing at a dramatic pace. Between 1997 and 2014, there was a 43 percent rise in suicide deaths among middle-aged American men. The rates are highest among American Indian and white men, who kill themselves at about ten times the rate of Hispanic and black women.

You often hear of America’s incarceration crisis. Well that’s almost exclusively a male problem too. Over 90 percent of inmates are men.

Now these problems are complex, and we know they start young. Relative to girls, boys are failing in school. More girls than boys graduate high school. Considerably more go to and graduate from college. In schools at every level boys account for the overwhelming majority of school discipline cases. One study found that fully one in five high school boys had been diagnosed with hyperactivity disorder, that’s compared with just one in 11 girls. Many of them were medicated for it. The long term health effects of those medications, not fully understood, but they do appear to include depression in later life.

Women now decisively outnumber men in graduate school. They earn the majority of doctoral degrees. They are now the majority of new enrollees in both law and medical schools.

For men, the consequences of failing in school are longterm and profound. Between 1979-2010, working age men with only high school degrees saw their real hourly wages drop about 20 percent. Over the same period, high school educated women saw their wages rise. The decline of the industrial economy disproportionately hurt men.

There are now seven million working age American men who are no longer in the labor force. They’ve dropped out. Nearly half of them take pain medication on any given day. That’s by far highest rate in the world.

Far fewer young men get married than did just a few decades ago, and fewer stay married. About one in five American children live with only their mothers. That’s double the rate in 1970. Millions more boys are growing up without fathers. Young adult men are now more likely to live with a parent than with a spouse or partner. That is not the case for young women. Single women buy their own homes at more than twice the rate of single men. More women than men now have drivers licenses.

Whenever gender differences come up in public debate, the so-called wage gap dominates the conversation. A woman makes 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. That’s the statistic you’ll hear. It’s repeated everywhere. But that number compares all American men to all American women across all professions. No legitimate social scientist would consider that a valid measure. The number is both meaningless and intentionally misleading. It’s a talking point.

Once you compare men and women with similar experience working the same hours in similar jobs for the same period of time — and that’s the only way you can measure it — the gap all but disappears. In fact it may invert. One study using census data found that single women in their 20s living in metropolitan areas now earn eight percent more on average than their male counterparts. By the way, the majority of managers in the workplace are now women. Women on average are now scoring higher on IQ tests than men are.

Men are even falling behind physically. A recent study found that almost half of young men failed the Army’s entry-level physical fitness test during basic training. Fully seventy percent of American men are now overweight or obese. That’s compared to 59 percent of American women.

Perhaps most bafflingly or terrifyingly, men seem to be becoming less male. Sperm counts across the west have plummeted, they’re down almost 60 percent since the early 1970s. Scientists don’t know why this is. Testosterone levels in men have also fallen precipitously. One study found that the average levels of male testosterone dropped by one percent every year after 1987. And it’s not unrelated to age. The average 40-year-old-man in 2017 would have testosterone levels 30 percent lower than the average 40-year-old man in 1987.

There is no upside to this. Lower testosterone levels in men are associated with depression, lethargy, weight gain and decreased cognitive ability. Nothing like this has ever happened to a population this big. You’d think we’d want to know why and how to fix it. But the media ignore the story. It’s considered a fringe topic.

Nor is it a priority in the scientific research establishment. We checked and couldn’t find a single NIH-funded study on why testosterone levels are falling. We did find a study on, ‘Pubic Hair Grooming Prevalence and Motivation Among Women in the US.’

This is a crisis. Yet our leaders pretend it’s not happening. They tell us the opposite is true: Women are victims, men are oppressors. To question that assumption is to risk punishment. Even as women far outpace men in higher education for example, virtually every college campus supports a women’s studies department, whose core goal is to attack male power. Our politicians and business leaders internalize and amplify that message. Men are privileged. Women are oppressed. Hire and promote and reward accordingly.

Now that would be fine if it were true. But it’s not true. At best, it’s an outdated view of an America that no longer exists. At worst, it’s a pernicious lie.

  I have needed to have my testosterone levels artificially lowered to castration levels to fight a particularly nasty and aggressive prostate cancer.
  
  It worked, but at a huge cost.
  
  No libido, no endurance, fatigue, insomnia, depression, mental fog, loss of muscle mass, weight gain, shrinkage of the genitals, (THAT particular side effect was an unwelcome surprise, to say the least) erectile dysfunction, up to 20 hot flashes a day. I ended up under the care of a clinical psychologist for a while there!
  
  But I’m still alive, I’m off the drugs, and I’m slowly starting to lose the weight and build up my strength again.
  
  Hell of a ride though.
  
  I wonder if my genitals will grow back?

Social media has been buzzing with rumours about long-standing columnist Hooton’s sudden dismissal from the publication.

Hooton’s firm, Exceltium, provided advice to the Act Party.
( That explains why ACT can’t make the grade. Why would anyone listen to Hooton?)

NBR publisher Todd Scott posted on Twitter that he had made the decision to end the relationship with Hooton before the complaint was lodged. It was reported that he was axed as part of a move away from lobbyists as columnists.

“I acted decisively, my seniors will confirm that I made my call ahead of any legal action from Mr Joyce. I can’t say that I personally agree with Matthew, but I will definitely be standing by him and defending his right to voice his insightful opinion,” he said.

This is the third cyclone to venture towards New Zealand since February.
Niwa meteorologist Seth Carrier said this is unusual, and it’s caused by the “perfect storm of weather features” this year. They’ve dragged the weather masses from the subtropics and the tropics towards New Zealand.

In an average November to April tropical cyclone season, Carrier said one or two ex-tropical cyclones typically passed within 550 kilometres of Auckland.

MetService meteorologist Brian Mercer doesn’t find the frequency of ex-cyclones that unusual.

“It’s very hard to say ‘normal’ when discussing tropical cyclones because they’re quite difficult to forecast for,” he said.

Explaining New Zealand’s “unusual” growing glaciers

The research, carried out by scientists from Victoria University of Wellington and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), was published today in scientific journal Nature Communications.

At least 58 New Zealand glaciers advanced between 1983 and 2008, with Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere) advancing nearly continuously during this time.

I see what they did there. People can see with their own eyes that the glaciers are advancing, while the self described “scientists” lied to us that they were retreating at “record speed”.

Politicians are gradually edging closer to acknowledging the true causes and consequences of Britain’s dysfunctional housing sector.

Prime Minister Theresa May took the next step this week, setting out clearly the stakes. In 1997, the average home cost 3.5 times the average wage. By 2010, that ratio had more than doubled. Demographia’s annual Housing Affordability Survey, which calculates median house prices divided by median incomes by region, suggests a ratio of 8.5 in London, 6.8 in Cambridge, 6.4 in Oxford and 7 in Bournemouth. Price signals are screaming “build more homes” in these areas.

Housing demand has risen due to higher incomes, population growth and fragmented family structures. But supply has not kept pace for decades. Differences in land use planning laws mean we build in the wrong places too. The economist Paul Cheshire has shown that “twice as many houses were built in Doncaster and Barnsley in the five years to 2013 than in Oxford and Cambridge” – a clear sign that supply is not functioning to meet demand. …

… Where housing is concerned, the weight of evidence suggests government is the problem and not the solution. If we stopped artificially constraining developable land where people actually want to live, and gave local authorities and residents the chance to face the financial trade-offs associated with development, supply would be much more responsive to demand.

When Tiato Phillip Field got turfed out of Labour and ran his own “traditional values” Pacific Island Party, his hypocritical and self-serving whinging about Labour being the party of gays and legalised prostitution got short shrift. So it would seem the main attraction among PI voters to Labour is financial, and also loyalty.
        
        Yes, Pacific Islanders tend to be loyal voters because they come from a culture that values loyalty, and Labour are the one to whom they are loyal. And there are some valid historic reasons for that, although increasingly Labour is vulnerable to the perception they are paternalistic.     Nonetheless, it still proves the political maxim, “explaining is losing”, so don’t give ‘em the opportunity to use the “racist” word in the first place. Especially when there is some racism, either real or perceived lurking beneath the surface.

I’m absolutely appalled that Cindy goes on her Pacific jaunt to make an announcement about NZ Super for Niue, Tokelau and the Cooks. Yes I know they are NZ citizens but they should only be eligible if they live and work in NZ, just the same as myself. FFS! There are so many restrictions for me if I want to leave the country for more than 26 weeks. It works both ways Cindy. Here she is making policy up on the “hoof” (pun intended) without any discussion with the NZ public. She says this will be the most open and transparent government………my arse!
May be someone here could tell me if these 3 Island protectorates no longer have to enter NZ for work to obtain the Super? or just sit at home from birth to 65 then it’s automatically given? I am not at all sure on this point.
But anyway it has riled me up so much I needed to rant!

Finance Minister Grant Robertson has signalled that property owners benefiting from the building of the Auckland rail links could be subject to a special “value capture” tax.

Speaking at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce/Massey University annual finance lunch at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland, Robertson said the Government was investigating “innovative” ways to bridge the funding gap to pay for the rail and roading infrastructure the country needs, especially in Auckland.

“Between the balance sheets of the Auckland Council and the Government, we still don’t have enough,” Robertson said.

“Minister Phil Twyford and I are actively looking at opportunities for how to do that.”

I have been keeping an eye on an excellent site, http://www.earth.nullschool.net, for most of the day and Hola seems to be stationary off the NW coast of New Caledonia and has been since this morning.
