Who said good comedy doesn’t exist in New Zealand?

Alice Snedden, Guy Williams and most of this cabal are devoted Jacinda fans. (Williams is especially devoted to a certain Green MP) Indeed another one of their number is the woman who said she would like to have Simon Bridges’ baby so she could abort it.

Snedden says ‘it would be a huge mistake if there wasn’t a place like this for young comedians, a place that trains them up so they know how to work for TV’

Now that is funny.

‘How to work for TV’ You mean, ‘write lame gags for a show that consistently fails, yet costs a fortune in state sponsored funding, paid for mostly by productive people who they castigate at every opportunity?’

Even funnier, Snedden and Williams both say they will move offshore for comedy work. LOL. Best of luck.

  As we all know Guy Williams is the incumbent “Moron of the year.” However he is facing stiff competition to retain his title this year. There is a real dark horse emerging in the form of Kelvin Davis, who is truly moronic. Then there is Phil Twyford, the master of being a twat and a real life buffoon. As is always the case Williams, will face a stern challenge from John Minto, who to morons is known as the “GOAT” and is desperate to win back the title.

Just how bad is the Ardern ban on oil and gas exploration?

Very bad, according to the Genesis Energy CEO.

I was at the shareholder’s meeting last week and the CEO made these comments. The speech is on the Genesis website.
“..our view is that by introducing significant uncertainty over gas supplies in the 2030’s it becomes much harder to remove coal from the electricity system.

“Removing the supply of local gas will make it harder to replace Coal in the electricity system. “

The CEO also talked about how using coal and eventually gas enables the use of so much hydroelectricity by ensuring a continuous electricity supply. And importing gas will mean more expensive prices for consumers.

What a loser of a policy.

  If you dont have a reliable source of power in sufficient quantities your BEV wont be going anywhere.

  Assume he’s not talking about closing them all.
  (Q: How many unemployed prison guards and prisoners will we be paying the dole to?)
  How much saving is he talking?
  If we let out 30% (as is angry andy’s policy) will we reduce the number of prisons?
  Reduce the No. of officers? (what does the union say about that?)
  Reduce maintenance cost?
  Where will the “saving” come from?
  Will crime increase? Requiring more police officers?

It is remarkable that people so happily accept the New Zealand way of doing murder trials. Let us consider that Arthur Thomas, Teina Pora and Mark Lundy have had two trials and two failed appeals each. We are powerless to do much while juries are fed false facts, but the appeal courts are usually furnished with corrections to these facts with close reasoning, yet 3 or 5 appeal court judges see their function so closely aligned with affirming the jury verdicts, the results stand, and a few decades in jail follow.

Add in David Tamihere, George Gwaze and Rex Haig, with their failed appeals, and it starts looking like serial carelessness.

Just 3 cases that did get to the privy council were determined to be miscarriages of justice, Pora, Bain and Lundy, and should have stopped right there, but undeterred, people that should know better badgered away with Bain and Lundy, with the extraordinary mess that follows.

No one cares, yet the collateral damage is huge, most people don’t notice, and relatives are rewarded financially, particularly in Thomas Bain and Lundy.

Internationally this is true in the cases of Jeremy Bamber and Russ Faria. The killer of the latter’s wife got the insurance money and went on to kill her own mother and one more man. This became a step too far for authority and she faces the death penalty. Jeremy Bamber languishes in jail on a full life tariff, in a miscarriage resembling those in NZ I have listed above, and a cousin living in White House Farm

Lawyers are unfit to handle murder cases, scientists. mathematicians and logicians must be called to the task.

All the alleged villains I have named above are innocent beyond any doubt at all, and other facts cited are unassailable. There are others that need a little more research. How about recognising this is a general debate, and responding accordingly on a day of gentle rest.

  My lawyer said it is hard to get an appeal to over-turn a conviction because of NZ’s small size.
  
  All the Judges know each other, and overturning a decision is seen as implicit criticism of the trial judge.
  
  And no one likes a critic. The playground gets lonely.

      The UK Government itself wanted to do away with appeals from ex colonies to the Privy Council. So even if the NZ Government had not forced the issue, the UK Government probably would have.
      In the David Bain case –
      1. The Government specifically asked the Court of Appeal to review the evidence together with evidence etc not considered at the original trial. This is usually not the Appeal Court’s function. This would be the nearest thing to an evidence review group now being proposed. The Court affirmed the evidence as considered was sufficient to support a conviction. Even though there were issues with evidence in the original trial, the Court did not consider a retrial was appropriate as some years had elapsed since the original trial.
      2. The Privy Council judges took a much more philosophical approach and ruled there should be a retrial even though there would be difficulties.
      
      So which approach was correct? Did the Appeal judges get it wrong, or did they make a pragmatic decision. Were the Law Lords on the Privy Council Judicial Committee ‘correct’ as such or did they take an excessively philosophical approach in considering a retrial was necessary. There are pro’s and con’s for either approach – neither IMO was ‘wrong’. So the judges cannot be criticised on this score.
      
      Indeed the proposed evidence review group would basically carry out the same sort of exercise as the Appeal judges did in the David Bain case. OK, such a group would have people drawn from outside the judiciary (and presumably legal profession). Would such a group have decided differently from the Appeal judges. Probably not.

        The problem is the definition of new evidence. I believe common sense should trump procedure. Let us for forget about Bain and Lundy. Is there anyone here on Kiwiblog who think Peter Ellis is guilty of the crimes he was convicted of?
        
        Why has not one political leader got justice for Ellis? Is Little going to be the one? I asked Simon Bridge’s in person and he could not give me a straight answer.

        Chuck, Don Brash is the person to talk to. He said he formed his opinion from reading Lynley Hood’s book. The petition he subsequently promoted was signed by Judith Collins before she became justice minister, but of course that juvenile trash heap would fall into line with John Key, who no doubt wanted no distraction from his front running enterprise.

        Chuck – in the David Bain case the appeal judges looked at all evidence including evidence ruled as inadmissible. The Crown invited the judges to rule some new evidence as inadmissible, but the judges declined, indicating they were capable of deciding the relevance etc of evidence, unlike a jury situation where care is taken not to place inadmissible evidence in front of a jury.
        Presumably any future evidence review panel will be able to consider all evidence, admissible or late or not since they would be better placed to downplay problematical evidence if need be.

    I have yet to see any reluctance in a superior court to overturn another jusdge’s decision because they are mates or know each other. I suggest you go to Judicial Decisions Online and read the CA and SC decisions and make your own assessment as to the percentage of cases over turned.
    
    Notsofast: your extravagent and unremitting pronouncements do any case that you may have a complete diservice. You base your theses on the fundamental premise that you are absolutely correct and everyone else is a moron, dishonest, apathetic or part of a conspiracy.       The published work of Cooper j is regurgitation of the old evidence, I can’t believe you might be comfortable with caging a fellow honest non violent citizen.
      The good news if any is that this verdict has no chance of standing, and a bunch of judges will have cause to reflect.

      There has even been cases where a District judge’s decision overturned on appeal by the High Court, then appealed to the Appeal Court who reinstated the District judge’s decision for the reasons originally given by a District judge.
      Similarly ‘general purpose’ High Court judges have overturned Family Court decisions when the Family judges would have a better understanding of family law than their High Court counterparts (IMO the Court of Appeal should consider such appeals).

    Have to agree about the Privy Council though. But it is a misnomer that the words ‘miscarriage of justice’ equals innocent, there are no degrees of ‘miscarriage’, and the smallest thing, that would have no bearing on outcome, can be described as such.

      It is coincident that the three cases referred there are actual miscarriages of justice because the 3 accused are innocent. 3 different outcomes followed, and it is indeed possible that the miscarriage can occur with a guilty party being convicted for the wrong reasons.

    Totally false Swifty, look hard at the evidence. Both cases involved alleged careful planning. The plans are daft if you consider them from the perpetrator point of view, there would have been better ways, and that is just one facet to consider.
    
    Robin Bain might get up early and call the police, someone might spot Lundy returning to a motel unit at 5 30 to 6 am. You do not expose yourself to these risks.

      Every murderer I’ve known (except one) has made mistake after mistake in their crimes – and which are most apparent after the event i.e in the cold light of day.
      
      You say ‘look hard at the evidence’. This is why you’re not taken seriously on here. Much cold hard evidence pointing to David, none pointing to Robin, just speculation as you’ve repeated here today.

        The point remains, David Bain could never expect to get away with it if he did it, he would have made a mistake that stuck. He didn’t do it.
        The same is true of Lundy. He was in Petone, David was on a paper round.
        These used to be called alibis in the good old days.
        All the forecourt cameras were checked for Mark’s car between Petone and Palmerston North. These point on to the road for driveaway petrol theft, and see every passing car, but Mark’s car was not seen because it never left Petone.
        Cast iron alibi, but the police fooled the jury. They were hoaxed.

        Overwhelmingly the physical evidence points to David. None points to Robin.

      Unlikely as it may be, there were two bad men living rough on the rugged Coromandel at the time, and one killed and tried to decapitate Hoglin, the other was unlucky enough to steal the car George Huia Foley abandoned after driving it from the murder scene 73 kms away. Few tears are shed for David Tamihere, but he is not that type of psychopath.
      Foley was, and fortunately is dead, though there is one more corpse that may have resulted because the police got the wrong guy.

      The police presented evidence in regard to the watch. They had evidence that he had contact with the car but had no evidence he came in contact with the people. The watch was evidence of him having physical contact with them. This is the most important piece of evidence leading to his conviction.
      
      Trouble is it was a lie. A complete fabrication. The effect on the jury is too great to allow the conviction to stand. We cannot permit a proven lie to be the basis of a conviction.
      
      The crown has no evidence, none, that he ever physically met the victims. Now with the body’s discovery his involvement is less viable or provable.
      
      It is an unsafe conviction. Beyond reasonable doubt is not possible.

It would seem that Ardern’s accusations that petrol companies are “fleecing” us, were her own effort to “pull the wool over our eyes”.
Although, as pointed out by National, she didn’t use accurate figures, her exercise was to establish how we are already paying more for petrol than we should, but she still went ahead and banged 15.5 cents – almost exactly twice the tax she’d mentioned – on top of the price that her whole exercise had just condemned.

She should publicly acknowledge her exclusion of her own tax in her conclusion we are being “fleeced” – although I suppose not having complete information on the pricing of petrol, when you make the decision on what to tax the product, is not as bad as having no figures nor any consultation whatsoever when you ban certain exploration in relation to the same product.

Did anyone else see the video on NewsHub yesterday of Cindy saying the COL will change the law to force open the fuel companies books to prove whether they are price gouging? Fuel companies are privately owned. Does this proposed change in the law to inspect the fuel companies books set a precedent for other industries to have their private company’s books inspected by the government at will?

A sod for cash flow as tax has to be paid on the net rents which have increased substantially without the depn. deduction. It’s a shame that the media doesn’t seek out an publish real stories from real teachers.

Imagine being a 55 year old woman primary school teacher and being told to “fuck off” by a ten year old boy who then threatens you with a visit from his father to “rape and smash you”. Then your principal refuses to take action due to “cultural sensitivities”.

There is much more at play here than salary alone.

I know many teachers who have taken their skills offshore because they could. They wanted to travel and see the big world so off they went. Some came back after their allotted time, some didn’t. Maybe met a local and decided to remain and raise a family away from the bi culture we foist upon teachers here.

We have all the indicators showing that our education system is in crisis, low literacy rates, massive truancy among the “disadvantaged” plus violence at high levels in schools against both teachers and students yet the dipstick thinks a “pay rise” plus benefits will solve the issue.

Saw a recently returned from America Asian student at a school assembly back in her home country. She started to perform student disruption learned from her American times and the DP of the school just got up from the stage went into the row, picked up the girl who started screaming and removed her from the assembly. While not ostracised by her fellows, her actions were viewed with horror.

Imagine the furore here if a teacher used that method to restore equilibrium to a classroom.

Countdown checkout. I like the checkout people, hard and fast job. You get to know which Girls/Guys are the slow ones and avoid them even in a longer queue. So today I asked one of my favourites ‘Has no plastic bags made your job easier?’ She rolls eyes – no allowed to comment.
So I told her to push the supervisors and management and get your mates to do the same. She just winked – no comment.
The fucking plastic pollution comes from China and India not here.
Also the other 15c bags are big and far too heavy for poor old grandma.
I see Countdown reneging as clients get fucked off. Please do not take it out on the checkout people – they are doing a low paid job.

  FWIW, and while appreciating your sentiments. those of us in the rural towns frequently have only a limited choice.
  
  Where I live (Central Waikato) the local ‘foodmarkets are New World, Fresh Choice, Four Square, the dairies or Countdown.
  
  Of these Countdown is the cheapest, followed by Freshchoice, and New World. Four Square and the dairies are on a par.
  
  There is really little ECONOMIC choice in respect of where one shops in such a situation, a fact reinforced by the fact that Countdown and Fresh choice can be $2-3 CHEAPER than New World and even more than that for the others.
  
  The nearest city is at least 45 minutes away, and while Pak’n’Save may be cheaper, the fuel prices tend to negate the savings. I’ve certainly tried that route, but the savings didn’t justify the effort.
  
  It’s a ‘heads you lose, tails you lose’ situation, so Countdown gets the bulk of my trade; to NOT get what savings I can, seems somewhat pointless. I don’t like it, and have made my views known, but the choices are, as already noted, somewhat limited.

  It’s further away, so costs me more in gas (good for the environment, huh), but it’s the principle of the thing. The plastic bag ban is singularly stupid and doesn’t solve the problem it claims to. By all means, take you own bag, if you want – but don’t force your choice on everyone else.

        Never met the man to form an opinion on that Mike.
        
        He’s always had my admiration for standing up to a certain arsehole who wore a Traffic Officer’s uniform in Lower Hutt in the 70s. At the time I was driving a stock truck over the hill to Ngauranga a couple of times a week & putting up with Traffic Dept harassment on a regular basis.

“All eligible Maori and Pacific job candidates are being automatically fast-tracked to the interview stage for openings at Auckland DHB, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Under the policy that began at the end of June and builds on a similar approach to recruit graduate nurses, if Maori and Pacific job-seekers aren’t hired, managers must give specific feedback to HR, so the unsuccessful candidate can be coached to improve their chances in future interviews.

Hobson’s Pledge is clear that race-based recruitment is institutionalised racism.

Moreover, the Auckland DHB gives the appearance of valuing a Maori-Pacific workforce over a best-qualified workforce.

The policy looks like it is illegal considering that ethnicity is a prohibited ground of discrimination under Section 21 of the Human Rights Act 1993, with no mention in that section of positive or negative discrimination.

Ward Kamo wrote that for those of you who want to blame colonisation as the cause of the high rates of incarceration of Maori, “tell that to the victims’ whanau – they’ll spit in your face and tell you it was a drug-addled alcohol-addicted useless Maori father that murdered their child”.

“These men should be grateful for prison, in comparison with the justice meted out in our old Maori ways,” he wrote.
