The bus fiasco in Wellington has shown up a major potential downside to light rail. With the new bus network a significant number of people are now expected to change buses at ‘interchanges’ whereas previously they could do their journeys on one bus. It is a bit inconvenient at the best of times, but more so when the interchanges have not be completed, the weather is foul or there is a long wait. Result – loss of current passengers and difficulty gaining new passengers.
This clearly shows that people do not like interchanges and yet light rail is dependent on a greater portion of passengers having to change services to complete a journey.
But then many light rail advocates (for ‘other’ people to use) do not think this through.

One thinh that has happened in London over many years. Some bus routes are the same as horse drawn omnibus routes of the 19th century. Why? Because people get used to the routes, it could influence where they live or work and would resent it if routes were changed.

    Those arseholes at Auckland Transport have already done the same in Auckland. What used to be an express bus commute into the CBD has turned into a half hourly shuttle to the railway station and a five stop trip into the city. Needless to say the locals have gone back to their cars. The only comment received from those arrogant pricks at AT was that they are not there to provide a taxi service!

  Never going to happen as long as certain folk are hell bent on their particular legacy projects.
  
  PS I still hate the new bus system, though they have reinstated the #18 route, albeit with reduced timetable, which is something.

    There aren’t any train stations on the North Shore.
    
    Whoever OKed the original design for the Harbour Bridge had next to no foresight. Not only was it far too thin to cope with the inevitable rapid urban expansion that took place out there, but no provision was made for commuter trains.
    
    I wonder if Auckland & NZ would have been better off if the Bridge had never been built at all?

      What they did was build the bridge they thought they could afford – it was many years from the first proposals to the actual bridge. And in those days two lanes in either direction was a remarkably wide road.
      
      And the railways didn’t go anywhere near the bridge on the southern side – and there was nor ail on the North Shore at all. I don’t think there were trams either but I may be wrong on that. My parents built in Milford a few years before the bridge, and the development just took off after 1959. However house prices didn’t skyrocket because there was plenty of room for more development and not a lot of bureaucratic blocks to make it hard to develop new subdivisions.
      
      But yes, they did lack a certain foresight.

        I’m guessing, but I think in those days NZ was following the US where public transport by way of rail/trams was on the decline in favour of private transport and buses, in new areas.
        
        It’s interesting how different cities in NZ used different modes of transport for commuting. A lot of people used to bike in Chch in the sixties. Trains in Wellington. I took my bike from Chch to the capital in ‘67 when I started work & felt like a gooseberry.

      I’d be interested to know if the Japanese company chosen to add the two outside lane “clipon’s” mentioned the future need for rail. The Japanese have, IMO the best rail systems in the world. Surely they will have advised this as a later option?

  In large cities such as London or New York, residents are strongly influenced in purchasing or renting their homes by access to public transport and duration of the commute time to their workplace.
  Living close to the tube and travelling less than an hour without having to hop is highly favoured.
  Commuters can be discouraged from using public transport if it becomes to inconvenient for them, such as changing modes or spending more time travelling.

    Bangkok started constructing an elevated train system about twenty five years ago plus one underground line. Malls and condo towers sprung up along the lines, some with direct access to the stations. Now the lines are being extended right out into the peripheral suburbs.
    There is one line that terminates at the airport. I used it to get home. Jammed packed with commuters, but hardly anyone appeared to be going to the airport.
    The problem now is that inner city stations can be vastly overcrowded in the rush hour.

      My extended family in Laos is making squillions selling land close to and around the new nationwide China/ laos railway system. They are a 3rd world country full steam ahead to being first world within 25 years. When I first visited in 2000 almost nobody had a car. Today, motorbikes are for poor people and students. Laos has a population similar to NZ. Seemingly they are able to get their shit together..

      The NIMBYS can take some of the blame but the aging infrastructure is already struggling to cope with infill housing never mind building apartment blocks. Narrow suburban streets are jammed with cars parked both sides effectively reducing them to single lane roads. Further residential development close to railway stations is almost impossible as there’s no carparking for rail commuters’ cars.

It is utterly ridiculous that the Medical Profession are now getting it for being ‘Racist’ (‘Unconscious Bias leads to poor outcomes for Maori’ etc etc)
Police and the Justice System have had this shit flung at them for years- ‘There are more Maori in Prison so Police MUST be racist’ etc etc…
It’s not poor life choices made by Maori themselves? No??
This is utter bullshit and 99.9% of New Zealanders know it.
At what stage will Maori leaders stop this blame game/’poor little me’ crap, take some responsibility for their outcomes and drag their people into the real world?

  According to “Hobson’s Pledge” Murris and PIs now get preferential treatment when it comes to employment at Auckland DHBs. They get first crack at applications, and if unsuccessful, details must be sent to HR so they can be contacted and coached in how to apply again.
  So now they get to med school with lower qualifications and into medical jobs with no credentials.
  This COL are quickly fucking NZ.

    There are some hospitals in NZ, where the Mowry are prioritised over all others, when making an appointment to be seen. I’ve noticed in one particular small town hospital, the receptionists and phone answerers are of Mowry pursuasion and often indicate that there are no available slots for any other ethnicity, yet any Mowry arriving at the door, get immediate service.

    There would be little correlation between the grades a student scores at medical school and the ‘quality’ of a doctor he or she is in a medical career. There are many who miss out who would potentially be good doctors. So giving Maori and PI students preferential entry does not significantly affect the quality of doctors produced. Indeed the UMAT test was developed to help weed out high academic achievers who would make poor doctors.
    In particular NZ has a responsibility (which surely no one will argue against) to accept sufficient PI students who will return to their home communities to practice.
    Most of the squarking about preferential entry for Maoris, PI’s and rural students would seem to come from white potential students (and their families) who achieve excellent grades in Health Science subjects but do not quite make it into Medical School.

        A doctor straight out of medical school is not qualified to or expected to carry out complex surgery. It would take about 9 years of training and experience (on top of the 6 years at medical school) before he or she would be considered a specialist in this area. And the odds are, top academic achievement in the Health Science year would be no indicator as whether a future doctor would have an aptitude for this sort of work. It is probable that a doctor who graduates with average grades but is a skilled model maker or similar crafts would make the best surgeons.
        In the old days surgery was a ‘trade’ (and the top ones would be very skilled despite primitive facilities, equipment and anesthetic drugs) , and even today, surgeons need to be skilled tradespeople on top of general medical knowledge.
        A doctor (of whatever ethnic origin) who is not up to scratch when doing surgical training would not be allowed to continue, and similarly others who start surgical training may decide to opt out (as my former GP did).

      They can use whatever system they like to identify who is most suitable as long as they don’t discriminate based on race.
      
      If you take a race-neutral system that is tailored to choose the best people, then add a race-based quota or bonus points, that is racism.

      Well haven’t you bought into the bullshit. How about you stop reading the propaganda and ask your GP, white or Asian I assume, how many maori entered and how many graduated.
      
      I think you will find a surprise. The number of graduates hasn’t altered dramatically and the marks gained for entry reflect the amount of effort put in to studying. Those efforts are required the years ahead and those that can’t do it, don’t make it.
      
      And yes, my child was one who had to achieve approx 20% higher than maori and yes….he did and graduated whereas a surprising number of the failures were…..”special” admissions.

      Sorry, but your argument is all over the place, and doesn’t hold water.
      1. UMAT (soon to be UCAT) is a controversial tool which aims to select the most appropriate candidates for ENTRY to medical school, on a range of aptitudes. Ethno-racial identity does not figure in this: it is ‘culture-fair’.
      2. You also claim that, ONCE AT medical school, there appears to be little correlation between the grades a student achieves, and their ‘quality’ (however that’s claimed to be assessed) as a doctor. (This is a different argument, although probably true: I speak from personal experience).
      (2) does not follow logically from (1).
      3. You also say that allowing Maori and PI students preferential entry to medical school does not affect the quality of doctors who graduate.
      If we accept (3), then (1) becomes invalid.
      Rather than “squarking”[sic] about race-based preferential entry, its critics (whom you pejoratively describe as “white” – when they might equally be Indian, Chinese, or other Asian) rightly question the justification for the selection of just two ethno-racial groups – Maori and PI. Identifying oneself as one of these does not, of itself, confer any intrinsic quality conducive to the successful practice of medicine.
      The real agenda is, I suggest, that the proponents of so-called “affirmative action” are determined to change the cultural climate of medical practice, away from the Eurocentric model, and towards a more “indigenous” one. That’s a different argument altogether, and not without its own deficiencies.

        If NZ does not train PI doctors, the Chinese will. It is legitimate foreign aid and as a long suffering taxpayer I do not begrudge this one bit.
        No one complained about the Colombo plan where NZ placed foreign students in our universities. The former School of Mines at Otago trained many Malaysians to return to manage work in their tin mines. Some of them hold very positions in their communities and are great ambassadors for NZ.

      Sooty – the Pacific Islands need doctors and rely on NZ for their training. It would be utterly grotesque if the Pacific Islands had insufficient indigenous doctors because suitable candidates could not get into NZ’s medical schools.

        I am unable to see why NZ taxpayers pay anything towards a few coral atolls that hold a bunch of breeders that eventually slip into NZ and such off the tax payer.

    But igm this was the policy or initial criteria back in the day at the Dept of Labour for any vacancy that came through the Vacancy desk. Is it A) suitable for female and B) a Maori woman? What an eye opener serving as a Temporary Employment Officer on a 6 month contract in a regional office. Little has changed except the order of primary selection.

  Did any of you see that story on the news last week about how non frontline Police staff were being ushered through a Maori cultural immersion/awareness course where they learnt to hongi? Apparently, if people typing up fines in regional HQ understand Kia ora then someone who maybe Maori and about to commit a murder or a robbery/home invasion, will simply think again.   Is this to do with the difference in resuscitation attempts with infants or new borns (or something like that) that I heard on the radio? Or something else? If the former, then I found it a curious state of affairs and wondered what the details were. Anyone know?

      There are a number of factors that affect whether an attempt at resuscitation will eventually result in a healthy child. For example, birth weight, whether the mother has been given antenatal corticosteroids within seven days before birth, the facilities available at the hospital, and more. It would not be surprising if those have a correlation with race.
      
      In the story they interviewed Dr John Tait, who is a fantastic doctor and delivered our first daughter which was a difficult birth. He explained the discrepancy pretty well but the journalist decided to bury that explanation deep down in the story and play up the racism angle instead.

        As if obstetric staff wouldn’t treat all babies with equal loving care! It’s such an insult to them and I think they should really speak up.
        
        Of course resuscitation will depend on heaps of factors, none of them being melanin levels!

      What was the lung development of the various babies. They would have all been taken. Show us the statistics that weight and lung development was the same/simular for both races but the non maori were resuscitated ???

    ….as a long term out patient of our DHB’s eye clinic for the past thirty years….I have noticed changes….long ago the waiting room used to be full of premmie babies with oxygen damaged eyes…..and the elderly…..fast forward….there are no longer premmie babies in the waiting room due to improved neo-natal care….but the waiting room has become full to over flowing….with PI’s and Murris…..all of them obese….all of them with complications due to diabetes 2…they now have their own waiting room…..get sandwichs….a lot of them come with carer’s….so the follow on effect from this for me is…..I used to get two appointments a year….now it is down to one if I am lucky……some years ago my father was on his final journey….being admitted to hospital etc….we were told to wait in a visitor’s lounge which we did…..but were moved into the hall ….just because the whanau room was full and the lounge was needed for whanau…..if you ask me they got a lot better service than my “white middle class” family did…..they have no business complaining when they get prompt and exclusive service…..

  Poor birthweight, developmental abnormalities (heart/lungs/brain) infection, delayed delivery – the list is long.
  I worked in neonatal units back in the day, and there was never any ‘decision’ not to resuscitate babies without discussion and explanation to the parents, and it was always due to the probability of the child not surviving the treatment.

    I’ve said it before. Natural gas will be a golden fuel for decades to come. It will play a major role in switching out coal and reducing greenhouse emissions. Apart from that it saves lives by reducing air pollution compared to coal.
    
    It is incomprehensible why any country would forgo domestic gas reserves and so be forced to import it. Or much worse import coal.

They could just unilaterally bring in new laws and regulations in a wink of an eye without any warning or reason.

And Cindy appears to be a perpetual liar. But, Cindy’s supporters are unwilling to call her a liar.
To further complicate the situation, we tend to treat all news (even tragedies) as entertainment, especially politics — and we’re receiving this news, (including advertisements, opinions, and editorials) 24 hours a day via TV, radio, newsletters and newspapers, social media, and the Internet.
Cindy’s background and temperament make her ideally suited for the current environment. Whether one is a Liabore supporter or not, people become addicted to following her exploits, day by day, hour by hour. The MSM (And our host DPF) understand this and, in turn, are playing (and making big money) to our “unseemly” interests.
Can anyone defend Cindy’s challenge to tell the truth?
Not likely.

        In a house I sold a couple of years ago in the front there was a old giant Avocado tree producing 3,500 avos a year, and big ones.
        Why ? – because the weepers of our toilets spread around the roots.
        We gave them away and delivered them on a Friday to the local retirement villages.
        They went very quickly at around 4 pm regularly.

Mark my words. The Tax Working Group and the Paris Agreement is all about the biggest redistribution of wealth this country has ever seen.

The plan is to take from the middle class tax payer and give to the lower class non tax payer.

Forget about the rich pricks. They pay little or no tax with their assets sheltered in tax havens and show little income in NZ to be taxed. Much of their expenditure is paid by other entities.

I suspect the middle class will see their tax burden increase significantly thru capital gains taxes and thru increased consumer prices as the effects of environmental taxes as a result of Paris flow thru.

They will also have to pay for the increases in benefits for those who either dont pay tax or get WWF etc.

Do Maori donate organs in the same or similar proportion of other New Zealanders?

That’s an interesting question as Red Radio fires up Maori grievance about health issues.

A report on the Red Radio web site today reports a “Maori health claimant” (to the Waitangi Tribunal) thus:

She says a nurse was once told by her non-Maori colleagues: “Maori don’t give organs so they shouldn’t be the first to get them.”

It’s just one of many incidents she claims Maori nurses deal with behind closed doors.

“Institutional racism within the health sector is a wicked problem, that is, it is complex, difficult and highly resistant to solutions.”

Note first, the phrase “a nurse was once told”. Very weak hear-say. And what are these “closed doors”?

But the main point: if Maori are culturally opposed to donating organs, should they be able to receive organs donated by non-Maori? Are Maori opposed to donating organs? What are the statistics on Maori donating organs compared with non-Maori donations?

Red Radio – Radio NZ – has a low standard of reporting in its Maori coverage since the State-owned news organisation was stitched up by Maori tribal radio in the coup led by Wily Willie Jackson.

  There was the infamous outrage by the family of Billy T who were outraged to find that his heart had been stored at Auckland Medical school after his transplant.
  They complained because their loved one was incomplete when interred. They didn’t think twice about the donor being incomplete when s/he was interred, and weren’t phased that Billy T is at rest with two hearts now.

… Attendees probably left last night with more questions than when they arrived as Ministers, who in Opposition had seemed sympathetic to environmental issues were left qualifying and modifying their stance on major issues.

This was starkly evident in an exchange between Urban Development Minister, Phil Twyford, and the EDS CEO, Gary Taylor over urban sprawl.

Twyford had set out an impassioned description of the impact of high house prices in Auckland and advocated the linking together of transport and other infrastructure and new housing developments.

But he also advocated the scrapping or urban-rural limits.

“We believe that we have to manage growth on the fringes of the city,” he said.

“If we do not allow new land to come into the supply we will never ever fix the problem of absurdly expensive urban land.

“With good investment in infrastructure and transport, with more planning, not less to create the future urban environment that we want, setting aside areas of special value and open spaces, acquiring land for transport and other infrastructure, if we then allow the city to grow we will bring down urban land prices and it is absolutely critical that we do,” he said.

Twyford had proposed this when he was in Opposition but, even so, any suggestion that more rural land was going to be absorbed for housing was going to be controversial at an environmental conference.

And Taylor was quick to respond.

“Everything makes sense except I worry about why you need to do away with rural-urban boundaries altogether,” said Taylor.

He said that giving free reign to developers seemed inconsistent with Twyford’s overall objective of having a compact city.

Twyford replied that it was a question of values.

“This is for us, for Labour, for our coalition government, this is fundamentally a social justice issue.

“Our objective is not to build a Copenhagen of the South Pacific.

“We could build a beautiful city with a whole lot of the policies we have talked about.

“We could build a Vancouver of the South Pacific; beautiful but utterly unaffordable.

“I’m interested in us fixing this totally dysfunctional urban land economy.

“If we don’t deal with affordability we will have completely wasted the opportunity that has been given to our generation.”

Twyford said the only way to deal with the affordability issue was to deal with the land price issue and that meant dealing with the artificial scarcity of land caused by the planning system and the availability of finance for infrastructure.

However he didn’t dispute that the Auckland region was going to become more heavily built up.

“You know what,” he said. “In two or three generations this is going to become a tri-city conurbation between Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland whether we like it or not.” … read more via hyperlink above …

I certainly wouldn’t propose this being the first response to a bullying problem but if nothing else is working it is time to stop protecting the bullies from consequences.

I do wish Duncan Garner would hold Jacinda’s feet to the fire.

I had to laugh this morning when Garner made some little aside to himself regarding that his grilling of Simon gave him serious journalism cred., or some such, no Duncan you are only going to have cred. when you don’t have such obvious bias, I am starting to wonder if you are jealous of Simon or that there is something ‘personal’ going on. Does your ex like him or something?

I’ve no idea what is the truth of the Bridges/Lee-Ross kerfuffle but I will say that if JLR has been disloyal to his leader then fuck him – he’s out.

And, knowing how close JLR and Whaleoil have been over the years – are his grubby prints all over this?

I don’t know. But I hope not. This stuff does not help one bit removing the CoL blight from our landscape – and which is our number one priority.

  Todd Barclay secretly recorded conversations when he wasn’t around. Specifically between his electoral agent and other people such as constituents and other National party members.
  
  Put in simple terms, you can carry a dictaphone in your pocket but you can’t leave it recording in another person’s home or office.

I will never vote left, rather cut my right arm off but National are stumbling. We should have been all over Liarbor but we weren’t and now it’s water under the bridge. Sorry but the current National leadership are not up to it.

Bridges – Go before you allow the Party to implode, although I think it may be too late…
