  Let me clarify this statement, US and Australia close borders to all non citizens that have visited China.
  The ban as I read it is on all world citizens, not just Chinese.
  Singapore acted very quickly, as I remember they did 2003, they had eight die from contact in a food market.
  The big difference I see between 2003 and now, the Chinese tourist numbers travelling abroad were around 20 million, now over 150 million.
  Aircraft have changed dramatically and long haul direct flights are now the normal.
  It appears to me a very reasoned response.
  I did two weeks of isolation in 2003 after arriving home from 2 weeks in China as did our Tour Doctor. Glady did this as my wife was a nurse.
  It is impossible to stop the spread of this by putting people together on an aircraft for hours on end. Mind you, the flight I came out of Singapore on in 2003, had just 4 passengers in economy class, the odds of catching it were very slim.
  It doesn’t appear as bad as Sars in 2003, but it is early days.
  Wuhan is a major tourist hub for 3 gorges cruise, many foreigners could and may have been exposed. Chongqing the other key port has over 30 million people.
  WHO have called this wrong, isolation is paramount. Bit like the measles outbreak, ended up killing many through slow response.
  5,600 were infected in Samoa and 81 died. This had severe travel bans and schools closing, but was called way to late. Swift response is essential.

So if we take into consideration that the pm only goes twice a week, this means the opposition will only be able to question her 24 times in the house before the election. Less if she is away on any of those days.

* Parliament returns from this month. After coming back on February 11, the House will sit for just 36 more days before rising and being dissolved for the General Election.

That’s not a lot of time, in the scheme of things, to make a pitch to voters who will head to the polls on September 19.*

Article in Stuff today about older people unable to find work and struggling financially. The article says Stuff spoke to dozens of people and their stories were similar – an unexpected redundancy. The headline suggests employers are ageist –

How employers are freezing the over 50s out of the job market

But there is little or nothing in the article about the Why or actually even the How. Applicants who ask why they have been rejected receive anodyne responses – well why would an employer say why they have discriminated and open up a discussion they are not interested in having. And their decision is not necessarily for one of the illegal reasons such as age, employment status.

We hear all the time that employers are desperate for workers, and let’s face it most working age people that are able to work are in fact working, older or not. Blaming an employer for ageism on the basis of a few folk interviewed is drawing a long bow.

And a thought about the supposed common theme of unexpected redundancy. Can happen, obviously, especially when businesses close, downsize or relocate, but anyone who has worked in large corporates is well aware that restructuring is usually the only way to move on some staff.

Sure, tough and depressing to live on a benefit, but it is noticeable that there was no mention of those interviewing receiving an Accommodation Supplement (AS) or Temporary Additional Support (TAS), although other income is detailed. Taxpayer subsidies both. That is either a journalist not asking, not reporting, or the information not offered, or the person interviewed is living in social housing so not eligible for AS.

  Since I decided to close my business 15 months ago I have applied for three (part time/casual) jobs, was offered all three and accepted the one that I preferred.
  
  One can only assume the people struggling are bone idle lazy or stupid.

      They also don’t have a tendency to leave at the first opportunity – to earn just $1 or $2 more per hour. — Albeit I can’t blame anyone for doing that, be prepared to work hard at any job, and then change your job every 6 months for $1 or more an hour would be one of the better investments a young person makes – and besides loyalty no longer pays in most businesses these days , you are expected to do it all for free – largely via txts and phone calls.

        Would you want to hire someone whose CV showed that they had a different job every 6 months? Unless they could come up with a really good reason, I wouldn’t. It takes time for someone to learn a job, time during which they cost money but are usually not very productive.

    The line I was in was always directly effected by the world economy.
    Subsequently over in Thailand the lawn mower would be put through the ex pats and a few times your correspondent was disposed of.
    The last time I was 64. I rang around, but it was obvious I wasn’t going to find the sort of work I wanted.
    I’d rather be bone idle lazy than count screws into little plastic bags at Bunnings. That’s not my gig.

  After being made redundant, there is usually a bit of money in the bank.
  
  While not assessed as income, it is assessed as an asset, and excludes you from those supplements until you have used it up.

  This is certainly not everyone over 50, but this is the perception of a lot of businesses and are the reasons why older people struggle to get work

  There are plenty of people who struggle to get a job and they want one. Sure they might not be the cream, but they will always exist and it’s better to have them working than on benefits and poor.
  So cut the immigration flow so the New Zealanders are sought after and employers have to hustle to keep position filled.

    You are spot on there. And for every person on the dole several more are employed by government, over a generation that is, just look at the services now provided via government DUE to unemployment!!
    And it could also be said that employers paying huge taxes, only to have it paid back to their staff via WFF payments, is an indication that wages are too low – as WFF is only paid to couples who can’t provide an income between them to house their own family – and that is most families – most of the work force!!!

  I travelled a new motorway yesterday.
  
  The previous road it replaces had grass verges so if people had problems with their vehicle they could pull over onto the grass and stop in safety.
  
  The grass is still there but now there is a concrete and wire fence to kill anyone trying to get off the road.
  
  Genter should be charged with murder along side all others in the ministry decision making group every time someone unnecessarily dies because of this type of stupidity.

  Labour will have to form a coalition with the Greens to have any hope of governing after the next election and the Greens are clearly signaling that they will be asking for the cancelation of Labour’s motorways as the price of their support.

  Physics and facts are not a strong point in the Greens.
  
  As I see it her plan is to force motorists to take public transport and ride bikes by making roads horrible. That will never happen. And by building modern roads, cars will produce LESS emissions.
  
  When I lived in Wellington I drove Wellington to Raumati maybe 3,000 times. When Transmission Gully opens fuel burn and emissions will be materially reduced on those journeys.
  
  I’ll end on a cycling observation. Despite a couple of billion on cycleways, the proportion of commuting journeys by cycling DECLINED by 20 percent between 2013 and 2018. Cycling commuting was higher way back in 2001. I posted the data on GD a few days back.
  
  It is disturbing that we have people making decisions about our lives without any use of evidence or science.
  
  TBH if JAG is unhappy about a Government investment plan, that is a very reassuring sign that the plan is on the right track.
  
  There is a challenge for National here. A risk is that voters who were deeply unhappy about roads being neglected will say “It is all OK now”. National need to hammer the theme that the government spent all of the petrol excise that people pay with their hard earned money and spent it on rubbish. That rubbish is still happening. But they then went and BORROWED billions to build much needed roads.

    What of that paper linked to in yesterday’s GD, where the authors identified four separate inclusions to the spike protein sequence that appeared to have come from HIV ? Is this now confirmed, everything else I read seems to treat it as such. Anyone with serious chops in the genetic field have any comments on the paper ?
    
    Because if true, this very, very strongly points to an engineered virus and an accidental or possibly deliberate release that went wrong.
    
    Other reports I have seen suggest that Chinese numbers only include those who report to and get confirmation from a hospital – and the local hospitals are overwhelmed so the numbers are way too low as most people can’t and don’t go there. Primary problem appears to be a severe lung inflammatory response that gives symptoms akin to a severe asthma attack – trouble breathing and oxygen deprivation. Asthma medication won’t help though as the actual cause is very different.
    
    Further reports that appear solid suggest that the Chinese are using anti-HIV medications as part of the treatment, and this lends veracity to the findings about the inclusion of HIV proteins as those would be targets for medication.
    
    The situation is still developing, but some of the developments are troubling.

      This explains why the virus has a long incubation it hides from the immune system, just like HIV, there is no possible way if true this could occur naturally.
      
      Another point to note is those people who have so-called “recovered” haven’t recovered at all they are seriously debilitated.
      
      Governments around the world are taking this seriously they know more than any of us have been told, the key here is to watch how big businesses and governments act, this is how you know what is really happening, you will know nothing through fake news media.

        That thread seems to strongly suggest that the methodology and subsequent identification is fatally flawed. Also a note that anti-HIV medication is useful against retroviruses generally and so is not necessarily a marker for the presence of HIV proteins.
        
        Chaos’s other note above though about traced origins and a lack of a link with the “wet market” though is still troubling.
        
        But like I said, early days, and a lot to be discovered. However I would still not trust Chinese numbers on infected/ deaths etc, but it certainly does not seem to be MERS – which had a close to 50% death rate. SARS was closer to 10%.
        
        And I still think that the NZ government is being foolish and worse by not essentially banning all travel to/from China without quarantine in place.

        My expertise is drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics … within DM pharmacogenetics and genomics are a strength, and my PhD thesis was trans-placental metabolism and transfer of AZT so I know a fair bit about HIV…
        
        Silvana (the twitter user posted by Maggy) correctly points out that at least two of the insertions identified in the pre-print are known bat coronaviruses. Another of the insertions is so small (contains so few amino acids) that statistically its just as likely that it is a chance match. The pre-print is flawed.
        
        Also HIV1 doesn’t hide from the immune system genetically – it changes its cell-surface proteins (“epitopes” that the immune cells recognize and destroy) so often and so much that the immune cells simply cannot keep up and they get overwhelmed. HIV2 – the lesser known/studied may have some forms of immune evasion but again they’re not genetic, its recombinant.
        
        2019-nCoV-Wuhan is a mystery because [1] transmission can occur when asymptomatic [2] incubation period is long [3] still not entirely sure where it came from.
        
        FWIW I sincerely doubt that this is an engineered virus, engineered biologics are designed to be highly fatal… if somebody made this (and sorry to frighten anybody but we can do that in reasonably competent labs) it would have long incubation, high transmission and high fatality rates. This has long incubation, medium transmissibility and relatively low fatality. 2019-nCoV-Wuhan has all the hallmarks of random recombination of genetic material then a zoonotic jump (i.e. a jump from animals to humans, which is not really supposed to happen – its incredibly rare).

Acute, egregious, mad multiculturism …

Britain’s Sheffield University has produced a video saying Shakespeare, William Blake, and Virginia Woolf are among white authors “not necessarily” the best, but on the curriculum because of racial bias.

The Telegraph reports the video was produced by Sheffield University to educate its students about different forms of racism.

“Many of the writers, thinkers and academics who are traditionally studied are white too,” the video says.

American novelist Toni Morrison, Nigerian poet Ben Okri and British-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie are given as examples of non-white writers who are not typically studied.

Last year, the Sheffield University student union was criticised for after it announcing that it planned to hold focus groups on racism, with white undergraduates banned from attending.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports Sheffield University will pay 20 of its students £9.34 an hour as “race equality champions”, trained to tackle “microaggressions,” which it describes as “subtle but offensive comments”.

The BBC says the university gives as example of the “microaggressions”:

– “Stop making everything a race issue.”
– “Why are you searching for things to be offended about?”
– “Where are you really from?”
– “I don’t want to hear about your holiday to South Africa. It’s nowhere near where I’m from.”
– “Being compared to black celebrities that I look nothing like.”

James Delingpole writes elsewhere that one of the students behind the campaign is a Malaysian, Santhana Gopalakrishnan.

In a pamphlet she has given these examples of “microagressions”: “How are you Malaysian? “ or “You look Indian,” or “Your English is so good!” or “Do they have WiFi where you come from?” and even “Is it true Malaysians live on trees?”

The devide between Maori and Pakeha could grow after Waitangi with Jacindas I’ll advised intervention into Ihumatoa, but that won’t bother her or Ministers at Waitangi as it’s all about Jacinda and baby Neve.
Labour have taken Maori for granted every time they come to power and Ihumatoa threatens to cause more havoc at Waitangi this year. If Labour decide that they will pay Fletchers for the land at Ihumatoa and give into the occupation will show the Maori activists in NZ that occupying land that is not yours brings reward and will cause civil unrest everytime they need to use it anywhere in NZ.

  I’ll be doing the usual and staying well clear of the media and having a barbeque.
  
  One of the best things about travelling to Australia is to escape the non stop focus on Maori grievances. It will never ever end. If a bunch of people in Australia occupied private land and stopped a housing development they would be arrested quick smart. Here we contemplate paying the demonstrators!
  
  As time passes you will see Australian Ministers treating their New Zealand counterparts with a mix of bemusement and contempt. The rhetoric of a “special relationship” is hollow. I fully expect to see Australia wind back the trans tasman travel agreement over the next 20 years. It won’t be dramatic. Just incremental steps. Same with the deportation of criminal and undesirable New Zealanders. Every time a minister goes to Canberra to wail about it, the response will be to ramp it up a notch.

Struggling Northland sawmillers call for Government help, fearing ‘complete closure’
… as they struggle to source raw logs being snapped up by international buyers.

“We’ve been concerned about our log supply for a couple of years now and there’s certainly not enough to go around,” Rosvall Sawmill’s Mark Hansen told 1 NEWS.
Maurice Davis, from the Amalgamated Workers Union, says it’s a major issue.
“The problem is there are no mature trees in Northland of any scale that we can mill, so we’re having to bring them in from central North Island,” he says.
“And the cost of that has blown out.” [1]

Are they going to have climate change maths at school too –
To fell a tree in the Central North Island and truck it to Whangārei sawmill, how much of another tree’s sequestered carbon equates to the fossil fuel that the logging truck uses to journey there laden and return empty?

And if you are planting trees in Northland, financed by Shane so people will vote for him in that electorate, how many sawmills will fall over waiting nearly three decades for those trees to mature.

Meanwhile are not most of the extra trees planted in the 1900s, in the Central North Island?
554,000 hectares [2] which, if roughly 1,000 trees per hectare, could be around 554 million trees – about half a billion EXTRA trees – from the 1900s, maturing and ready for harvesting.

This is acknowledged in a Shane Jones Cabinet Paper, being referred to as “… the large number of trees that were planted in the 1990s and are coming up for harvest over coming years” [3]

What isn’t acknowledged by Shane – well, not splurged in the media – is that, in the decade he hopes to plant One Billion Trees, forestry needs to harvest those approximate half a billion extra trees from the 1990s

      My old man established two forestry partnerships in the Wairarapa in the early 80s – around 1500 acres and all radiata. We sold the last parcels about 10 years ago. I visited the blocks maybe 30-40 times – taking a few reds and porkers out.
      
      These local value-adders need to compete with whatever price being offered by the overseas buyers. If they can’t well then they’ve got two options then haven’t they.

    Someone in the timber business could explain why tropical hardwoods are relatively cheap in New Zealand, while home-grown radiata pine, pretty much a second-rate timber, is being priced off the local market.

From reading the reports, the virus appears engineered specifically to target humans, increasing the level of suspicion that this virus may have been created in a lab.

        I’m wondering how the intellectual property rights are allocated. For example, in a few years’ time when the coronavirus is hopefully a distant memory, who will be entitled to commercialise the intellectual property rights? Universities? Private companies?         There seems to be a “cottage industry” of scientists who seek to derive commercial advantage in this situation. Very interesting. And, as the article notes, it required a diligent researcher to trawl through patent applications before people realised what had happened.

Do you know what it costs to e.g. develop a vaccine, by diverting a number of senior scientists, tech and staff to do nothing bu that for the next 6-12 months, test it preclinically, then clinically and then apply for expedited FDA approval and get it out there? Well I do, and its close to a billion dollars. The scientists filing the patents don’t have a hope of developing the vaccine, they want Big Pharma to come buy it off them and then get the trials and approvals done. The ting is its the nimble academics that can study an individual virus at the intimate genetic level and solve these problemsmd – the scale up is commercial.

        The scientists as Erasmus are beyond outstanding. I know more than one of them professionally and personally. They’re probably one of the top 3 in the world that can solve this.
        
        That being said – the standard practice is to file the WIDEST patent protection you possibly can, and let the PTO (patent office) decide on the actual boundaries.
        
        There’s a real reason for this: even the smallest loophole(s) can be exploited by a competitor, because one you publish the results all your time and effort can be replicated in a couple months by a well funded and resourced competitor, who basically repeats what you spent blood sweat and tears doing, then adds a bromine molecule to your drug and requests approval for it as a “me too” compound … i.e. if the class is already approved by FDA those that are second (or third or 24th) to the party not only get a faster development process but also an expedited approval process.

        There seems to be a difference between:
        (1) a private company that creates a patentable medical product from scratch (and I’ve dabbled in biotech investments, though not massively, so I have a basic understanding of the commercialisation process), and
        (2) the collaborative/cooperative research effort that Maggy referred to above in the case of an incident (to use a neutral term) like the coronavirus issue.
        
        I understand why the patent registration application would use the broadest possible description. My question, though, is whether it needs to be as broad as I highlighted above (and whether the patent office should approve such a broad description), and if it didn’t, whether scenario 2 above (the cooperative/collaborative research effort) would effectively come to a grinding halt.

      Try using principles, thinking, reasoning, and logic to formulate your thesis. If you can’t, then stay out of the kitchen.

      Hmmm, but it certainly is correct that two of the more threatening outbreaks that have erupted but been contained over the past couple of years have been “Corona” viruses – SARS and MERS. And MERS in particular had a very high death rate. So if one was to simulate as part of a training exercise a viral outbreak, then using a Corona virus as the culprit is perfectly reasonable.

“Strange lights seen over New Zealand part of a growing issue for astronomers”

An American company’s satellites triggered a flurry of excitement on local social media last night.

People reported seeing strange lights in the sky but an Auckland astronomer says the explanation is relatively mundane.

Grant Christie, of the Stardome Observatory, says sunlight was being reflected from hundreds of satellites being launched to deliver broadband internet.

He says the number and brightness of satellites launched by companies such as SpaceX and OneWeb is becoming a problem for some astronomers.

SpaceX has so far launched 240 satellites as part of what it says will be 12,000 orbiting earth.

      b) They would land in a local park.
      
      I would be very concerned if they did land in a local park. Considering the implications and proximity and the intimidation it would represent, it would be tantamount to gate crashing.
      
      Imagine an old long lost school friend dropping by unannounced, parking his stretch Hummer on your carefully manicured front lawn. Would that be intimating?

      You are correct. Fascism is the complete opposite of Socialism. It is the antidote to socialism. It was a political strategy by the NSDAP. The party itself removed the term ‘socialist’ a couple of times in the early 20’s it went from German socialist workers party to just German workers party, the debate on using the term continued right to the end.
      
      Social welfare is socialism yet somehow this is fine with anti-socialists.
      
      Nationalism isn’t a tool or ideology, it’s a biological drive of those with common blood to bond together in the struggle for survival. It’s the same drive a mother has to protect her children. The same drive a man has to protect his family from invaders.

        This trick happens with all socialism that advances. Socialism is a stepping stone to communism and/or fascism.
        
        While communism and fascism have minor differences, in terms of government control and dictatorship, they are no different. It is the imposition of un-elected leaders’ ideas on the people, with a monopoly on force to ensure the people comply.
        
        The MSM however have indoctrinated the populace to believe that Fascism is right and Communism is left.
        
        In reality Fascism and Communism occupy the same political space. Socialists, who welcome in the hard line commies, are usually the first to be executed, as in the Night of the Long Knives, and in the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
        
        When a socialist government is overrun with communism, socialists realise what the communists are delivering is not their socialist utopia. The socialists then become the second most dangerous force to be eradicated alongside those who oppose communism.
        
        The other version of this is that to make Socialism work, it requires force to get compliance, so the socialist Government through gradualism, becomes a dictatorship. Call it communist, call it Fascist, it really doesn’t matter what you call it, it is compliance to the leaders wishes at the end of a gun.

Mike Moore has died. As his wife says: “probably New Zealand’s last blue collar Prime Minister”. (he was PM for 59 days prior to the 1990 election).

I only met him once, but my friend Roger Douglas had a lot of time for him. He certainly served New Zealand very well.

    fighting: According to the Horrid, he had survived three bouts of cancer during his life…and then the stroke in 2015. Very lucky to have made 71.
    
    As I said above, I only ever met him once, at a lunch with Roger, but he seemed to be a pretty good bloke to me. I remember when Clark deposed him (she was his deputy)…the coldness in her eyes when they both appeared on TV and he vainly sought to get her endorsement.
    
    He had got a hospital pass from The Goose just prior to the 1990 election, and damn near won it as I recall…none of that meant a thing to Madam Cold Heart…she wanted the job, and he could just get fucked.

        Nature’s biological adaptions are usually to heal, to find balance, not to kill. I could be wrong.

I have been checking up on the main parties’ policies and neither Labour or National appear to have any policies on animal welfare.
The Greens have plenty, but it seems none of them have been or will be implemented any time soon…or any time ever.
And Labour’s obviously happy to send thousands of animals overseas to countries with virtually no protection for animals.
I think I might vote for that nice young fella who was concerned about women getting burned on sunbeds.
Sounds like he has a heart…..

This is being pushed in the area that used to be called Transkei and is now called Eastern Cape – an area I knew particularly well.

While I’m not a pothead myself some mates bought some dope there in the 1980s. They gave the grower R20 (about NZ$ 20 at the time) expecting to get a wee baggie as they would have in a city – enough for their holiday. Instead the grower handed over 2 supermarket plastic bags full.

The dealer most likely though he was doing a good job skinning these dumb white guys.

Of course inflation has marched on, so let’s say a supermarket bag is now worth $100 to a grower. The real markup is at the dealer level where that gets converted into $5-10k of tinnies and baggies.

So if they expect the subsistence farmers to be able to feed their families on the back of dope, they are in for a rude shock. If anything the current prices will just go down.

    Yep, I have a book with Pukeko casserole, braised Pukeko, or Pukeko in aspic.
    
    It says for best results the birds should be hung for about 3 days. The flesh is strongly flavoured. Still it is free range I guess.

    I politely disagree. Winston is now reliant on Labour as much as Labour has to rely on Winston. They need each other equally. Winston will not have the same bargaining power as he did in the last election. If Labour wins again (hope not), I do not believe that Winston will have the same bargaining power and ability to run the show.
    
    Furthermore, Winston did not deliver on most of his promises so hopefully the NZF party won’t get to the 5% threshold. The best he can hope for is that Labour grants him a seat.
