Noticed that the left wing parties overseas label anything vaguely conservative as nationalism, probably with a capital N – trying to give word association with Nazis? It is starting to happen here too. Look at the left wing blogs. Though some call it popularism, implying giving voters policies they want is seedy. Winston Peters has a lot to answer for. It is almost the elites that populate the government are scared the voters want to do reactionary things like carry on calling here New Zealand. This trend of equating sensible right wing policies with fascists is just the latest play in the anywhere vrs somewhere; elites vrs hoi polloi battle. In the left’s eyes, the only acceptable lower middle class or Maori are those that vote Labour. The last thing they want is for people to have their own opinions that don’t conform with identity politics. Look at the namecalling the British Labour Party have called their ex-voters in the former Red Wall electorates. Can Sikhs or Jamacians really be white supremicists?
Pride in one’s country is not fascist – nor is flying the NZ flag as the only flag on the flagpole. It is not nationalism to be unhappy with the government’s policies, like the Maori wards. People can be very patriotic in their views yet not threaten anyone, except maybe a hypersensitive wokester. There was a good article in Unherd, a website with articles by a variety of authors which is a lot more thought provoking than anything that is put out here. Ed West even manages to appropriately quote George Orwell. To quote him:

Reading the Orwell definition above, it is probably quite correct now to call the left wing parties wanting change nationalists. I wonder how they will react?

Has anyone noticed the liberal news media don’t call out AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) a radical socialist US Democrat rep, on her claim that she was threatened by the mob that invaded the Capitol building? This is a modern version of Faafoi and McDonalds’ openings. She wasn’t in that building but another one that wasn’t invaded. When caught out, she has all these media and “fact” checkers like Snopes organisations defend her, but the tag ”#AlexandriaOcasioSmollett “ will probably stick.

    As usual stephie, you did not read what was written. And relying on biased factcheckers shows your lack of intellectual horsepower.
    At the time, AOC sent out “Wednesday was an extremely traumatizing event and it is not an exaggeration to say that many many members of the House were nearly assassinated. It’s just not an exaggeration to say that at all,” she said.
    “We were very lucky that things happened within certain minutes that allowed members to escape the House floor unharmed. But many of us narrowly escaped death,” she continued.
    She was actually in her office in another building that had no threat – that is lying by omission. If she had put that piece of information in her original claims, then it would have cast things in a different light.
    I note no mention of the Cruz death threat. Your silence is telling.

A few years back a couple of commenters on Kiwiblog reckoned that Kea was a Christchurch Physicist/mathematician – Dr Marni Sheppeard… whether that was true or not, I never knew.
(Although Marni Sheppeard had commented on some theoretical physics sites under the nom-de-plume Kea.)

      I can’t understand how anyone with that much experience (and is risk adverse enough to consider cars dangerous) does not carry a PLB.
      
      Even if you do not carry a PLB for your own sake, carry one for the sake of your rescuers.
      
      PLBs reduce the risks that search and rescue must take to find you. To go into the mountains without a PLB shows blatant disregard for these people.
      
      If your intention is to get “lost” and never come back then leave a note.
      
      I fail to have any respect for people who go into the mountains without a PLB, especially when they have experience and should know better.

        If ?Kea didn’t have a locator beacon with her it would have probably been because she couldn’t afford it.
        
        Marni Sheppeard last year was living pretty much hand-to-mouth in in hostel-type digs, at least part of the time in Christchurch. She was still preoccupied with her quest for a breakthrough in string theory.
        
        Instead of a poet in a garret she was a physicist in a hostel.
        
        Here’s a post from Kea in General Debate on 24 September 24, 2014, which affirms she liked to get into the mountains (she’s sparring with an eccentric, marijuana-enthusiast Global Warming theory believer who was one of the more prickly posters in those times):

The anti-intellectual Holocaust denial and jumping at any chance to denounce the Jews (and not holding back) shows more of a central obsession with this topic, than with string theory.
        So wipe away those tears, and no need to eulogise over what a great bird ‘he’ was.

  Maggy, actually you were “half-right” because the PM didn’t attend the important welcome ceremony at the lower Te Tii marae on the first day (morning), where she would have met protesters (which Labour stage-handlers were obviously trying to avoid).
  
  As we know she turned up later that day (and I don’t recall a reason being given) and then of course Labour announced its latest bribe ($150M)!
  
  I do wonder though, is Labour’s latest bribe coming from their $10B Covid “slush fund”?
  
  After all they announced a day or so ago that the $50M community journalism funding would come from the $10B Covid “slush fund”, again demonstrating that Labour are using taxpayer money for non-Covid issues and are “buying” support. I wonder why isn’t this being called out as being “corruption” by the MSM and leftie online media writers?

  I was told she was not very popular in the North, while I was up there for 175th anniversary of Ruapekapeka ahead of Waitangi weekend. I didn’t sense any feelings of fandom that she was coming especially.
  She was called out by name by one of the few nutcase radicals which tried to loudly hijack the commemorations when cameras were rolling.
  
  I don’t think Maori automatically care as much for the cult-of-Jacinda as some Pakeha mums. She doesn’t represent their aspirations at all.
  But yes, the ‘hold me to account when I return to Waitangi’ comment she made was not going to work out well, so a big sack of money was the surefire way to instantly smooth over any percieved non-delivery for Maori.

The Earth is now cooling. In 2020 we entered the Grand Solar Minimum, the largest since the Maunder Minimum of 1645-1710 which marked one of the coldest phases of the Little Ice Age (1350-1850 approx.). Northern hemisphere temperatures were 1.4C lower than today during that time which was sufficient to regularly freeze major rivers like the Thames in winter and impact agriculture causing widespread crop failures.

Temperatures during the current Minimum which is predicted to continue until 2053 will drop by at least 1C. The most intense period of the Minimum is expected to run from 2031-2043. A drop in global temperatures of this order will have a huge impact on food supplies – the world should be preparing now for how to deal with the prospect of mass famine and other serious disruptions.   Put as simply and as briefly as I can – the Greens lifeblood consists of railing against traditions, norms, the status quo, challenging ‘maleness’, ‘whiteness’, the ‘patriarchy’ etc etc etc. Constantly telling ‘pakeha’ all the things we are wrong about, have to do differently; sexiam, racism, anti-trans etc – constantly lecturing us about changing our ways.

  So when have you ever heard Green MPs talking about Maori shutting up and “acknowledge that Pakeha men need to lead the discussion about what their roles are and where they put their voices….?”

  Or,
  
  “Women/Maori should leave this particular Pakeha/male priority to Pakehas/males…”
  
  Well, of course, the answer is never. Everything the Greens do is virtuous, progressing, brings justice etc etc – but everything National, man, pakeha does is always no good, backward, meddling and compounds inequalities.
  
  Even when the point at issue is one of sexism still being practiced in parts of our society!!!
  
  The whole thing with Marama is a great fucking joke being foisted on the good people of New Zealand.

    This, to me, is exactly the sort of racial separateness and divisiveness that is leading our country in a wrong and bad direction.
    
    This is Marama saying that, as a member of one particular race, she can say anything she likes, any time, any where, on and any subject (and of course by definition if it comes from her mouth it will be a virtuous and desirable thing to say or do) – but that when it comes to matters Maori anyone not of that race must remain silent as they are not competent or qualified to speak.
    
    This is by my definition political race-hustling i.e. politicians or ‘community leaders’ pitting one race against another in order to seem virtuous or to seek political advantage.
    
    It is not leadership. It is not healthy. It is not virtuous. It is in fact destructive, divisive, unprincipled and is taking us into dark and un-navigated territory.
    
    The sooner NZers wake up and speak out against this kind of behaviour the better, in my view. At the least, NZers should boot out these race-baiting and race-hustling politicians and community leaders and never let them back in.
    
    This woman is not uniting New Zealanders. She is dividing us; into two camps. One which believes everyone is equal under the law and in our daily lives and the other which believes one race must be accorded special privileges.

  I suspect most of this “protocol” is made up on the fly to suit whatever situation at the time, I have personal experience of this.
  Several years ago my wife was being farewelled from one local body and welcomed to another and there was a dual powhiri ceremony performed.
  I was seated in the front row, just before it commenced a bloke told me cos’ I was wearing (dress) shorts I had to go to the back.
  After the ceremony the kaumatua from the welcoming iwi asked what the other bloke had said to me, I told him I wasn’t allowed to sit at the front cos’ of the short pants. The Kaumatua was pissed off and said that was BS.
  Personally, it didn’t worry me, just the irony of a culture that historically ran around in grass skirts being offended by my knees was a bit of humour.

  Marama Davidson is probably upset that Shane Reti and Judith Collins had stolen her thunder (and highlighted a shameful aspect of conservative Maoridom).
  
  Which is a shame because two days ago it was a very powerful (visual) statement having both Davidson and Collins shown (on tv & photos) to be discriminated against because they are women.
  
  But yesterday, because of Davidson’s stupidity, the issue of discrimination against women becomes “forgotten” as it then becomes an issue of “Pakeha interfering with Maoridom’s protocols”.
  
  I do agree, it was most disappointing.
  
  That powerful image of “solidarity” (two days ago) then becomes weakened (especially when Kaumātua said they would relent next year). Now Kaumātua won’t necessarily have to, as the narrative has now changed thanks to Davidson’s outbursts.
  
  On the plus side for Collins, she still came out of this looking good yesterday (and got plenty of positive airtime)!

    One solution for Kiwiblog would be to have posting hours at the weekend. Restricting posts to certain periods would take pressure off moderators, and allow a more rational flow of posts.

While Marama Davidson comments that Judith Collins lacks ‘cultural expertise’ on wāhine’s role at marae (possibly racist remarks) Davison did not apparently herself get to speak either, with an explanation by one elder (on talkback radio) that the context extends for a reaction to colonialism.

Indeed the local “Aotearoa” edition of the Guardian features can article headlined “New Zealand’s Māori women have more to contend with than ordinary sexism” – Colonisation has had a particular effect on Indigenous wahine that disadvantages them to this day, and begins –
The Mana Wahine Kaupapa Inquiry hearings will begin this week, investigating claims regarding the specific tiriti violations of the crown that have led to injustice against wahine Māori across social, physical, spiritual, economic, political and cultural dimensions.

The article outlines: The colonial lens is indeed a misogynistic lens, in addition to being a white supremacist lens, and so the policies and legislation which stemmed from this view naturally placed wahine Māori within crosshairs which have continued to shape our destinies, and that of our children.

In her accused ignorance, Judith Collins saying it was “sexism”, appears more accurate than Marama Davidson would acknowledge.

It is an interesting article, but lacks one obvious point – any reference to the apparent fact (it would seem – mainly because aspects of the “misogynistic lens” exists to today, as explained for some of yesterday’s comments on protocol), that Maori men must have either accepted or condoned the demise of their women’s status.
I would like that explained, as the Waitangi Tribunal will surely find colonisation responsible for everything else.

As Mark Levin pointed out on his show yesterday, isn’t it funny how we’re not even allowed to mention election fraud that took place last year. It is summarily dismissed by the media and by Democrats who poo-poo the idea. And yet after Trump won the presidency in 2016, the subject of Trump having cheated was constantly brought up by the Democrats. It was their talking point for years. They even started an investigation into so-called “Russian collusion” which took years and found nothing as we all knew it wouldn’t. The media ably abetted them in this. But they didn’t even let up after that, finding more excuses to attack him with.

But now, even the #StopTheSteal hashtag has been banned from twitter. You can’t even bring it up.

It’s total hypocrisy. But that is par-for-the-course with Democrats. To quote Ben Kenobi, “you will never find a bigger hive of scum and villainy”.

Was Israel Folau’s quote from the Bible not an expression of conversion therapy?
– a belief that people with diverse sexual orientations or gender identities are abnormal and should be changed so they fit within hetero-normative standards.

Is there a freedom to express an idea (that may be quite unpopular), but no right to actually perform any practice or procedure that would extend that idea.

If Folau gave a sermon in his father’s church, on the subject of saving people from homosexuality, would that be “conversion therapy”?

  I suspect it would. Bridges point was surely that consenting adults can agree to (most) anything they want behind closed doors, including one convincing the other they are not gay. Ironically of course it’s a very similar argument to that used to decriminalise homosexuality in the first place.
  
  The more interesting thing is that this legislation will extend to transgender conversion therapy. It will presumably become a criminal offence to tell little johnny that he’s a boy if he says he thinks he might be a girl. It will be incredibly damaging.

The Wall Street Journal says battery prices are falling and that most car makers expect that electric vehicles will cost the same amount to build within the next five years.

This is because battery prices are coming down, the newspaper says.

At the beginning of 2010 Boston Consulting Group estimated batteries cost $US1000 to $US1200 per kilowatt hours. They are now about $US125 per kw hour.

The WSJ reports Venkat Viswanathan, a mechanical engineering academic at Carnegie Mellon University, as expecting them to go as low as $US80 per kilowatt-hour in two to three years before bottoming out.

At least the child has an excuse.   On a serious note, this is actually very disappointing of Dr Wiles, as again she is delving into areas an “esteemed scientist” shouldn’t be and “politicising” herself, which is her attempts to contact Air NZ directly to force them to make changes. And what next, a Twitter campaign to shame them?
  
  It is clearly MoH/Government policy to allow Air NZ to serve in flight food or drinks (imagine being denied them on a long haul flight), which means removing one’s mask.
  
  If Dr Wiles has an issue with Air NZ serving food and drinks then perhaps she should take it up with the appropriate authorities, the Ministry of Health (and presumably the appropriate government Ministers, assuming she is on the govt’s covid response committee, like her mate Shawn “80,000 deaths” Hendy is)?
  
  And perhaps she could productively spend her time figuring out a practical solution (rather than wield the easy/lazy ban hammer)?

Regular cannabis use has harmful effects regardless of the age a person starts using, a University of Queensland-led study has found.
The study examined people who began regular cannabis use in high school or in their early 20s, and compared both with non-users.
Lead author Dr. Gary Chan from UQ’s National Centre for Youth Substance Use Research said the results linked regular cannabis use with negative life outcomes by age 35.
“Compared to non-users, regular cannabis users were more likely to engage in high-risk alcohol consumption, smoke tobacco, use other illicit drugs and not be in a relationship at age 35,” Dr. Chan said.

  we (NZ) really need to get to the bottom of whether Cov-19 has a longer incubation than 2 weeks quarintine can cater for, or whether mingling or contamination is leading people to catch in inside MIQ.
  
  The cost to the country of another national panic (not so much the impacts of the disease itself) means that the MIQ has to be fully robust around preventing the escape of the virus.

  The ruling that politician’s familiies should be left out of discussions on Kiwiblog was/is a fair position to take but when ardern and the media decide to push a child to the forefront of a political event such as “Waitangi” then I believe there should be some latitude.
  
  I do not think that Waitangi is an appropriate place for a small child, even the child of the PM given that there is always unpleasantness there but I believe ardern made a calculated decision to take her child to deflect criticism, and garner media attention … plus dumped $150 million on the cranky locals as well.

As I would expect today, virtue signaling on the front of the Dompost. I noticed they’re talking about a $1uff campaign they did 3 years back to get NZ history taught in schools. Aren’t journalists meant to reflect society, not campaign to change it?
There’s other things not related to Waitangi in the slightest but still tries to make out how racist we were/are are as a country which I guess is okay but, this isn’t the day to do it.

Had to laugh at that proponent of the perpetually aggrieved Rawiri Taonui, someone I had the great misfortune to be seated alongside at an NZ media awards – Christ that was a depressingly tedious night. Everyone else at the SST table escaped as quickly as possible but I was naive.

Anyway there he was on the HDPA show bleating on and on about how maori sexism wasn’t actually sexism and that the “real problem” was the appalling mispronunciation by politicians when speaking at Waitiangi. “Oh it’s dreadful, painful the awful speaking… shouldn’t be allowed…” etc, etc ad nauseam

at which point he referred to our glorious leader as Jacinta

A leading epidemiologist says it’s critical to isolate the air circulating between rooms and corridors in hotel quarantine to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

The findings of an investigation into a cluster of the highly infectious UK strain at Brisbane’s Grand Chancellor Hotel were released yesterday.

A number of recommendations were made, including changing processes around the movement of staff in hotel corridors.

Chair in Epidemiology at Deakin University Professor Catherine Bennett told ABC Radio Brisbane hallways are prime environments for transmission.

“If the corridor is a dead space and doesn’t have good ventilation then the virus may stay suspended and spread along a corridor enough that someone metres away could potentially get an infecting dose so trying to keep the air isolated between the rooms and those shared corridor spaces I think is going to be a critical step,” she said.
