Does Otago Polytechnic fly the national flag permanently? I genuinely cannot say, but I am sceptical. Now, to publicise (i.e virtue signal and indoctrinate) to all their commitment to Maori “equity” (not equality) the institution is considering (i.e. will) fly the Maori flag, a separatist symbol by definition. Another incision counting toward the death by a thousand cuts of our once proud and self-assured nation.

John Key was right – Wellington is dying……. it will take decades for the city to recover from the damage this council is inflicting on it in three years. ….. Wellington is so strapped for cash that ratepayers face rises of 13.5 per cent this year and 5.8 per cent on average for a decade, but Fleur Fitzsimons can’t tolerate selling the library’s office space.The city’s businesses will need tourist dollars to rebuild, but freshman Tamatha Paul wants to obstruct the airport’s development because of climate change.

    Mr Holdom’s item was more about local government governance. But a lot of talk and even some media attention on emergency housing (motels) in the CBD causing plenty of issues.
    
    Last week Stuff reported on this – 300% increase in Wellington region in the last year. The headline included “under strain from Covid-19 and escalating housing crisis”. It should have added that most of these households are not going to anywhere near top of the list for private rentals now – way too risky with the new Faafoi rules, and plenty of ideal applicants lined up.

    Just remeber these are only one mineral used and plenty of “Rare earts” mined in similar ways, Myanmar and China. Where enviromental impact is not considered important.

  Can anyone explain why the South Island needed to stay on level 2 until this morning. It makes no sense. There hasn’t been as much as a sniffle reported down here for months.
  The Nelson market was closed again yesterday. We have a reseller there who for the second week in a row was unable to earn an income for his staff and family. I imagine that was the same for Saturday market holders right across the Island.

New Zealand, the best performing country on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, has been successful in controlling the pandemic.
As has Singapore, Asia’s most transparent nation.
So if you want lower covid-19 deaths it appears you only have to be honest.

  Which is why the Climate Change Commission is so dangerous. It wants to phase out gas when it is booming internationally. By 2030 there would literally by no gas barbeques. Of course unintended consequences. People will turn to charcoal. Nobody uses electric barbeques and no chef cooks with electricity.
  
  Then they are recommending reductions in our dairy and beef herds. The output of which will instantly be taken up by other countries.
  
  To make things worse, Jacinda shows no sign that she understands her Government’s climate change policies, especially the flag ship emissions trading scheme. She never refers to it and I would wager a large sum that she could not explain it.
  
  Somewhat of a tangent… Recently Wayne Mapp defended Jacinda’s communication skills, noting that she was a champion school debater. That may be so. She is articulate if she controls the agenda. But she falls apart if she faces even moderate questioning which shows that she is not across evidence or analysis. So she can recite endless rhetoric about climate change. But she has never demonstrates that she understands the science, and in particular the economics of climate change. Or even her government’s own policies! That is a dangerous flaw.

    And ‘jeez wayne’, since when did being a ‘champion school debater’ best define the attributes of a Prime Minister?
    
    The best attributes are what you highlight as being missing, BY, and your description of these adding up to being a dangerous flaw are spot on!
    
    But back to champion school debating, in debating one is arguing to advance a position or cause etc (whether it is factually the correct position or cause to take or not), and that’s exactly what we see from our Prime Minister, someone advancing causes (such as disbanding ‘clean natural gas’) that are at odds with the facts (higher energy costs for consumers, under-capacity infrastructure requiring major investment which will take a long time, more imported energy including from less regulated countries, global transportation to NZ, more global emissions as a result that outweigh NZ’s CC ‘savings’) but as ‘champion debaters’ they are at their best which is selling us, the public, their version of ‘propaganda’* to believe in, get behind and support (*as JA inadvertently put it the other day)!

      On the very first day that she was on the campaign trail after the rolling of unelectable Little , she was asked about that days’ reserve bank interest rate meeting.
      
      She wasn’t aware that it was on ,and she said she’d get back to them.
      
      Someone up for the top job should have been aware of the big agenda items of the day , and she wasn’t.
      
      The Media Pardy gave her a free pass on that.Had she been a conservative candiadte they would have crucified her lack of knowldege of the big issues and like they did to Brash , make her unelectable.
      
      The rest is history and she’s still being touted heavily by them as Princess Kindness.

  This afternoon we observed why Jax called the L3 lockdown. Given the volume of traffic heading down the Mike Lee’s “Holiday Highway” towards Auckland, all loaded up with luggage for a week away plus bikes on the back and surfboards on the roofes of cars, the lockdown was clearly called to help boost the economy of Northland. And although I haven’t seen it, I bet the same applied to the Waikato/Coromandel region.
  
  In most worlds you couldn’t make this stuff up, but in the world of Jax, these things are a different matter.

We have had Jacinda Ardern, Phil Twyford,Megan Woods and Grant Robertson condemning the National Government on housing.
This before 2017 and then after the Labour Coalition took power , but now they control New Zealand after a massive win in 2020 with the largest ever majority the still can’t come up with any solution to fix the problem.
On the 24th of November 2020 the news was Grant Robertson has taken significant steps in the Government’s quest to address soaring house prices by lobbying the Reserve Bank to change its mandate.
Then on the 9th of February 2021 the Finance Minister signalled a crack down on Property Speculators with a proposal curb house prices inflation that would go before Cabinet shortly.

I don’t deny that there may well be *SOME* kids who are genuinely trans, but I strongly suspect there are a hell of a lot more who are just weird, confused, unsure – in other words, stock-standard teenagers. And I think in the years to come, there will be a lot of those kids who got convinced they were trans by well-meaning people looking back with a lot of regret.
  
  I truly believe that there will ultimately come a time when we look back on this particular aspect of this little blink in the timeline of history with horror at what we as a society did to our kids.

Either the opposition (both National and Act) are being ignored or are as feckless as the 4th estate – I haven’t made up my mind. Either way at present they are both as useful as 2 left shoes.

We have a housing market out of control, major import supply issues, a deteriorating relationship with Australia, lack of plan around both the economy and the vaccine rollout, decaying infrastructure (harbour bridge) and now we can’t even complete transmission gully because of a contractor shortage.

On this basis apparently the lingerie model cum newsreader’s skin cancer news is the most important article on the horrid and Maori fathers being the best in the world in Stuffed.

And the worst part approx 60% of the population are really happy with our situation. There is nothing we can realistically do to stop the rot. We might as well ask if Meghan and Harry want to become our King and Queen to complete the humiliation of this once great country.

Mmm … was this a fishy voter at the last election?

For a second time I’ve had a letter from the Electoral Commission.

It’s addressed to a person purportedly at my address plus an “A”, which would normally mean a back section or a flat or such.

There is no such dwelling with suffix “A”, and the postie’s put it in my letter box.

So no such address, and at the nearest address if it were a simple mistake, no such person.

The first time I returned the letter, unopened of course, to the Electoral Commission. Now I’m doing the same with the second letter.

I didn’t note the name of the addressee in the first letter, so I don’t know if the name in the second letter is the same.

Anyone aware of other similar letters going out?

It might have been missed by many who have listened to the prime minster’s waffly Covid lockdown pressers. For the third time now during these stand ups the prime minister as said that “this week I received a letter from…” Friday’s reference to a letter was this time from a mother whose child wanted to attended a school camp.

Undoubtedly the prime minister probably does receive mail from the public, but it’s what the mentioning of the letters tells us. Arden is approachable. She takes the time to read every letter written to her (she even has time to read letters?). She cares. She is the benevolent mother figure of the nation. She uses feelings to lead. Most of all it does show she cares and this continues to develop that scary cult of personality that continues to evolve around her. Her “bugger” comment, gosh she is one of the people. How endearing. Of course while the cult develops around the prime minister to almost alarming levels of cult worship seen in many post-war European leaders, it’s role is to show Arden is kind and cares while Collins is just an old nasty Nat from the Nasty Party.

Good tactic by Labour’s spin team. And of course these letters actually exist?

Tarrant deserves to be locked away until he dies, but the luvvies who trumpet prisoner rights, emphasise reformation over punishment, and sing the United Nations judgments on New Zealand, need to be aware of the Mandela Rules on Punishment.

These are the UN’s “standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners:”

Rule 43 includes a ban on indefinite solitary confinement and prolonged solitary confinement.

Fair enough to ignore that for Tarrant, but in return let’s not have so much righteous trumpeting of various UN groups’ judgment of NZ.

If I was in the Government’s shoes I would release him after 10 years (80% of the purposes of the Sentencing Act would have been fulfilled) and deport him to Oz.   What if Peter Davis is correct? The overweight problem exists in other parts of Polynesia. You could tell a Chief by their size, their daughters were expected to have adequate weight to be admired for it too.
  
  It is possible that the weight not only showed status but the ability to survive through famine from hurricanes. Genetics may have subsequently propagated the weight enhancement more widely.

Because of the recent spate of earthquakes there have been many “experts” giving their opinions, summations , deliberations , evaluations and prognostications.
( Isn’t the English language wonderful ? Try saying that in “te reo”).

But as usual we are left with the same result: nobody can predict earthquakes, nobody knows much about tsunamis, nobody knows when or where the next quake will occur, the whole topic is less about science and more like a lottery.

These “experts” know a lot about what has happened in the past but none of their knowledge can be applied to the future.

Nice income, expenses and travel perks however.

Three minutes after receiving it, Shayne Currie, Editor of the Herald, sent a note to his fellow editors Murray Kirkness and Rachel Ward, asking them to “review this urgently”. An hour later my column was off the Herald’s website. An apology to readers was in its place. ..

The Herald is now a pale shadow of its former self. It was once a big beast in the media forest but today is nothing more than a nervous chihuahua.
