Road Crisis : No money for new roads after 2030 unless system gets shake up.
Fuel taxes need to go but we have got to find better ways to pay.
News last week that the Government has been looking at phasing out fuel taxes in favour of other ways of charging for road use has been welcomed but the Government is staring down the barrel of a Transport Infrastructure Crisis if it doesn’t start planning for new ways of funding Transport now.

Really why wasn’t this being worked on before Jacinda Ardern our Celebrity Prime Minister decided to make her Captains call on closing our gas and oil fields and Climate change, this is just another example of the Labour Party that throw millions at lesser problems and leave the hard stuff to whoever wins the next Election.

  A good example of why Parliament needs to be in control of authorising all expenditure made from Public Monies. Now a transport fund is involved in climate change and scratching it’s head about future business.

  They can’t do anything wise as they do not understand the advice on offer and only use sycophants, including departmental staff who don’t upset them so much.

  A very simple solution. Impose a road or fuel levy on ECars. They
  Should already be paying a levy to use the roads.

    Yup. E cars are largely owned by the relatively wealthy; petrol & diesel cars are owned across the wealth spectrum. Which means that road usage by wealthy E car owners is subsidised in part by poor, petrol car owners.

    There’ll be no new exploration. And we’ll become even more dependant on imports , supply lines through hostile waters , etc in what is a changing geo political reality .

    New exploration permits were cancelled, so made it uneconomic to bring an offshore drilling rig down to explore in current exploration permits.
    
    Also, even if you discovered something in a new exploration permit, the risk that you would be denied a production license would rise to 50% in a Labour-Green government.
    
    Labour-Green has made it clear they don’t like:
    * oil and gas
    * coal mining
    * Marsden Point oil refinery
    * Glenbrook steel mill
    * Methanex
    * Bluff aluminium smelter
    
    But they do want Guaranteed Minimum Income where all New Zealanders receive a basic salary “from the government”….

In recent months, it has become apparent to me that there is simply no point in opposing the Labour government. Apart from those of us in echo chambers like Kiwiblog, nobody’s listening.

The media are too busy rebranding us as Aotearoa.
Public figures are too busy virtue signalling their wokeness, for fear of cancellation.
Bankers and economists are too busy justifying why the economy is fine, despite record levels of debt which are only serviceable at low interest rates, or the spectre of rising inflation.
Ordinary folk are too busy working hard to make a living in the post covid economy.
Bewitched former National voters who misguidedly switched to Labour are too busy justifying what they now realise was a foolish move.

In the meantime, the racial separation of the nation is growing at an exponential rate.
The destructuring of our society is almost complete.
Incompetence is either ignored or celebrated. Accountability is inevitably mitigated by circumstances.
The phantom crises which were the clarion call of a Labour party seeking election have become all too real under their stewardship.

And all for a hug or a hijab.

  I feel for you Maggie’s Partner. Had dinner with my millennial children in the weekend and I was surprised, and pleased, to note that their woke attitudes have completely turned around.
  They are as aware and concerned about Labour’s push to implement Apartheid as I am. Despite the conspiracy of the MSM to suppress this, and the National party being absent, the message is sinking in
  As an aside, having said National is absent, I have personal experience in confronting the Maori sovereignty issue face to face and found it a bruising experience I have not much stomach to repeat.

    Unfortunately for the whitey woke activists and the few maori that care about their own language, the reality is for them, that currently maori would be the third or fourth language in terms of the population that speak it (remembering only a small percentage of the 15% of the population that are maori speak or even care about it). Chinese and Hindu are already ahead most probably on a population basis as are a few computer languages I would suspect.
    
    All of this seperatist nonsense is just going to result in resentment from the rest of the population and further embedd maori on the bottom rung of the ladder as the Chinese and Indian immigrants move on on up.
    
    Chinese and Indians arrive here from the real world, where life is actually tough going, and people really don’t just get hand outs and hugs to get ahead. They have no time for complaining about what someone did to their fathers fathers father that is directly responsible for them being in the situation they now find themselves in which is everyone elses fault.
    
    The longer this goes on, the worse the outcome will be for the instigators of this continual complaining and pointless activism.

        Wavey – paying tax at a lower rate than NZ will not help you. IRD will tax you at NZ rates, and then allow you to deduct any foreign tax paid. Re property capital gains, the same rules would apply as here i.e a gradual move toward full capital gains tax.

Double tax agreements may relieve you of paying tax twice on the same income. You need to leave NZ permanently & break ties to become “non-resident” &

      Did you know that over 50% of NZ’rs pay no net tax? ie: they receive more from the Government than they pay in tax? Straight from Cindy’s tax working group. So I’d slow up on the “user and exploiter” nonsense.

      But there the money is used to improve the country for the vast majority of the population or lift people up for the bottom 10% of citizens.
      
      Instead of like NZ where taxpayers’ money is used to fund the lifestyle of 10% of the population who spend the day smoking dope (paid by taxpayers), going to the gym (paid by taxpayers), lounging at home watching movies (paid by taxpayers), f***ing different partners to get more taxpayer handouts (paid by taxpayers), and psychologically and physically abusing the children or step-children they are supposedly to be looking after (paid by taxpayers).

  I still think it is worth pushing back politely and firmly on an individual level with other individuals and small groups – local MPs and council members, professional associations (I have attended my first ever General Meetings for my profession’s national association in the last 3 years – not cheap to do…), speaking at parliamentary Select Committee hearings, and so forth. If enough of us do it the voices while ignored are still heard. While it may not result in any changes, it’s what I can do so I do it.

  Maggie’s partner, I completely agree. It’s disheartening watching the 6pm news now, bunch of woke puppets trying to scare us with Covid. I watched it for the first time in weeks last night, and won’t again for a while. Wokeness and removal of targets is everywhere and nothing gets achieved and the cycle continues.
  
  I’ve decided to work on my own plans and goals for financial freedom and not succumb to mediocrity.
  
  Stuff them. I’m the person walking the opposite way to the COVID arrows in the supermarket isles, the person bypassing the QR code scanning queues of sheep and the person not sucked into the vacuous spin of Jacinda. I’m glad that in this forum at least, I’m not alone.

  Our debt is not that bad, its like 30 odd % of GDP which compared to other countries is really good (UK 80 odd %, US is over 100%, Japan 200%) and was just under 60% in the early 90s.

But here’s a thought; do you think it’s possible that a member of the Newshub political team has joined the National Party, paying the low minimum fee? What a way to get “confidential” information from a political party, that you can then dress up as a leak!

    It’s not a report on future policy Chukar. It’s a wrap of the clusterf*ck that was the 2020 election campaign, and you can be sure that not every party member accepts every one of the recommendations.
    
    The upcoming round of Regional conferences is going to be very interesting indeed, because rank and file party members will have the opportunity to be heard. I’m off to the LNI conference in Napier in ten days, and I am sure there will be some robust debate.

      National are between a rock and a hard place Tony and could be for a long time. It’s a very hard situation. A lot of people have welcomed the health reforms but Judith is immediately against them. You, a loyalist, are now talking about dissent in the party without realising that is part of the problem. Meanwhile, the National’s pet Act is taking National for a walk instead of the other way around.
      Talk about copping a curveball when the history is clear Labour lost power when they lost the Maori vote, it was the same for National 9 years later. I think the National hierarchy has finally understood that but the question is how do they sell it to people like you that it is a time for a change.
      Mathew Hooten wrote a couple of weeks ago that a lot of National’s policy is on the hoof, and not researched thoroughly. Getting that right would be a good start. Take note of Labour being settled under a single leader while there’s no certainty about Judith at times. Fixing that would be a good start by there being confidence in Judith. And who better to talk about health reforms in National than Shane Reti and why not delay critical comments until seeing which way the dust settled with broad public opinion and comment?
      As I’ve written before JK was the master at taking over good Labour ideas, Jacinda does the same in a slightly different way with a loyal team behind her.

    On the contrary. If National do have any of the above, they would do better to keep it all well hidden until after they’ve got into Government. It’s unfortunate that what you have to say to be successful during an election, is so completely at odds with what you have to do to be successful after it; but that’s the reality.

      Agree Albert – worked well for the Labour Party who spent their nine long years in Opposition doing absolutely nothing except opening the pay cheque and going on trips and meetings of various kinds – no policy development much at all.
      That’s why they had to spend those $millions on working groups to tell them what to do after the election.

  A friend told me about a family member in Christchurch. She got bashed by her gang boyfriend. Face all smashed up. She was found by a Housing New Zealand worker doing the rounds. Anyway the guy went to prison for a couple of years and before long she was visiting him in prison. Then on release she hooked up with him again. And got bashed again. Apparantly she got help, changed her name and moved far away.
  
  Once young people reach about 14 they would really benefit from education about partner choice. Choosing the wrong partner has huge consequences, especially if there are children involved.

  Years and years ago I did the court reporting for our local newspaper.
  At the time, bikie gangs were causing trouble in many areas of our fair country.
  One court case was to do with an assault among gang members involving two young ladies.
  One girl was an associate of the guys who rode British sourced motor bikes.
  The other with those who had the more recently introduced Japanese made bikes.
  The magistrate was having difficulty getting to the bottom of what had happened with this girl assaults girl stoush and getting frustrated with their inability to give a credible account.
  Finally he asked one of these teenagers “exactly why did you attack this girl?”
  The eventual answer was that it was because the other girl was a “Ricie” (as in rice).
  That’s all it took. One’s beloved had a British bike, the other a Japanese one – gotta fight for it.

  cmm: Some years ago I had a conversation with a police sergeant who had worked in Tokoroa for some time. He told me he saw some gang moll he knew quite well on the street, and in the course of casual conversation, asked after her gang member partner.

Thank you for your service, but you lost your electorate seats so take the hint, move on, and give an opportunity for someone new with some energy to start getting some experience and exposure in Parliament well before the next election. And frankly, I can’t see Nick Smith ever holding a significant portfolio in a future National government, and having been in Parliament for more than thirty years, it’s time for him to move on.

        @ DeepBlue – the problem for National is that they lost so many sitting MP’s last time around that only two of the next ten from the 2020 List have not been MP’s before, Nancy Lu (#26) and Dale Stephens (#29). Harete Hipango (#21) is the next MP on the list to be eligible to fill a vacancy, followed in quick succession by Jonathan Young, Tim McIndoe, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Paulo Garcia. Whether any or all of those would turn down the list placing is anyone’s bet; I know McIndoe has moved on, and I’ve heard Young isn’t really interested in returning to Wellington, but we won’t know for sure until there are resignations, and the Electoral Commission contacts them to offer them a seat in the House.
        
        The next really new blood on the List is Katie Nimon from Napier, who was ranked at #45 last year

  For example the Tauranga Council Commissioners have decided virtually to no longer have votes for Councillors – they are appointing three Maori out of four new ones to the principle committees which are currently Maori dominated anyway.

    National opposes the Government’s proposed Māori Health Authority and the veto powers it will have over the rest of the health system.
    The Government says it has a te Tiriti obligation to segregate healthcare, dividing us into Māori and everyone else. As far as we’re concerned, segregation was an appalling idea last century and it remains an appalling idea.
    Before Labour rushes down this path, they need to pause and consider where segregated systems will lead us. A separate education system or justice system?
    Labour needs to be honest with Kiwis about how they are interpreting the Treaty and how far they intend to take ‘co-governance’. We can argue the language and meaning of the Treaty, but the Prime Minister and her Government should at least be open and transparent about how they are approaching it.
    The Government’s Cabinet Paper reveals the Māori Health Authority will also have the power to veto any decision made by Health NZ. What does the Government hope to achieve by separating our healthcare along racial lines and then placing the power of veto in the hands of one race-based institution?
    Equality is a core value of the National Party and we will not budge on our position that every New Zealander, no matter their race, should have access to the same rights and opportunities including access to healthcare.

It’s long overdue to do away with everything to do with race and start treating us all as New Zealanders. Dividing us racially is not going to end well. So the gubermint has to step in. What about all these billion dollar Iwis? Iwi now have the economic and political resources to solve the maori housing waitlists. Why don’t maori themselves take the initiative?

Big maori Iwi leaders don’t wait for the gubermint. Start spending your own money on solving a major maori social issue – which takes the pressure off the whole problem which is oh so important.

Maori are in partnership with the Crown apparently. This is a racket works one way though. Professional Maori are in partnership with the Crown otherwise the likes of Glenis Philip-Barbara wouldnt be crying to the gubermint for them to think of the maori children.

  There should be no Partnership between Maori and the Crown. Where in the Treaty does it say this? Nowhere!! When the Treaty was signed we were still being administered from NSW.
  
  The Treaty is NOT our founding document. Queen Victoria’s Royal Charter/Letters Patent is our true founding document. It annexed us from NSW on 16 November 1840 and was enacted on 3 May 1841, giving us our first Governor, legal and justice system, one law, flat etc. So many people do not know this and it has been suppressed by successive Governments.

India must have a much higher Covid rate than is being publicly reported. Around 30,000 people die in India every day. Covid is reportedly killing about 3,000 per day, which would be a 10% increase in overall deaths. But what we are seeing appears to be much more than a 10% increase, or else they would not be resorting to desperate measures around cremations.

India accepts that it is under reporting covid. Anecdotally that must be true. A significant percentage of arrivals into New Zealand tested positive for covid, up to 10% on some flights.

I would not be surprised if the real covid infection rate is 3 time the official count, and deaths similarly much higher.

Australia has just closed the borders to India, just as NZ is reopening them. The reasons for the NZ closure a couple of weeks ago have got much worse. The government needs to extend the closure for at least another 2 weeks.

  Clearly the infection rate is likely much higher, but that does not necessarily mean the death rate is much higher.
  
  Many, perhaps most, of those that test positive on the flights will be asymptomatic and will never develop serious symptoms.
  
  I suppose it all comes down to how you count the death rate. If someone dies and tests positive do you count that as a CV19 death?

      It’s all in the numbers because India has such a massive population.
      
      If, say, 1% of people that get infected die and 10% get infected (ie. 1000 per million), then that’s 1.2million deaths.
      
      So far India have had a relatively low death rate (according to official numbers) around 200,000 or about 160 per million. That’s not even a tenth of the UK numbers (1900 per million).
      
      They also have a lower median age than Europe/West which shifts things in their favour.

    India has a HUGE population. About 50,000 die of all causes an average day in India. If 3000 of those have SARS-COV-2 infections at the time so what? Hardly a game changer.
    
    If they have to normally burn/bury 50,000 corpses a day (worse at some times of the year when sickness prevails), then 53,000 is hardly going to be a problem.
    
    The problems are due to CV19 responses screwing up the supply chain – not due to the actual deaths themselves.

  What you say could be true but the 10% of cases on flights without deaths, once they get to NZ, doesn’t support your argument.
  India at present still has very low deaths per million and Asian countries have relatively low death number from covid.
  There is a need for in depth reporting without the fear factor.

  From colleagues on the ground there, a lot of people are dying from the usual killers in India – diarrheal diseases, other infectious diseases such as TB, motor vehicle accidents etc. – and the staff shortages and supply chain disruptions are preventing those people from getting the treatment they need to survive (beds, IVs, antibiotics, oxygen etc.), not just the covid sufferers.

    I suggest – but cannot access numbers to prove – that the extra deaths from flattening the curve and failing to catch up are at least as significant as the covid deaths if not outnumbering them. Why suggest that? Because if the excess mortality was entirely covid, it would be easy to see and provide proof. Note the CDC in the US adjusted their 2020 Covid deaths down by 90% a while back. Is the new DHB plan a win, win for the Government.
Gets rid of a system that annoys, has annoyed, most people at least some of the the time. Although the implementation of the actual process is still largely a theory at the moment.
Bask in the glory of something that looks like it could be promising.
At the same time it takes the public pressure off the real problems of lack of GPs, allied health worker numbers, community workers and waiting lists.
As there doesn’t seem to be excess capacity, this would probably reduce the maximum waiting time but have no effect on the average time.

      Theoretically (we’ll never know for sure), if we had followed the Swedish model, our equivalent number of deaths, today, would be 6,883!!
      
      Sweden could go with their plan, because they were not in election year — their next election is likely to be in September 2022. Our government did not have that luxury.
      
      Had the Swedish model been followed, we would now be suffering under a National-ACT NZ government, trembling with abject fear as we anticipate the horrors that Paul Goldsmith would be about to impose upon us in the 20 May Budget.

        I followed the numbers from Sweden throughout 2020 and this was the result at the end of that year:
        
        The annual death rate for 2020 was 0.94%, compared to the average of 0.92% for the previous decade. Moreover the death toll is lower than it was in 2010-2012 and the same as 2013. I don’t recall any great wave of hysteria about those years.
        
        You’ll recall that it was predicted that Sweden was going to suffer worse than other nations because it had not gone full lockdown (true) and was instead going for “herd immunity” (false). Actually they went for “social distancing” and kept their schools, cafes and the like open.
        
        To put it bluntly, the excess deaths are just not there: the people who died with or of Covid-19 would have died of the flu or Pneumonia instead, just as they do every other year. The Swedes can be well satisfied that they didn’t crush their economy with extremist lockdowns.
        
        In the early stages of this pandemic we were informed that excess deaths were the key tell that something bad was happening. That was true for the months of April-May in much of the West. If we’re going to accept the measure of excess deaths for given months then we need to accept it for a year as well – and in the case of Sweden the excess deaths are simply not there for 2020.

        Sweden and other nordic countries fortify various staple foods with vitamin D so that there is far lower incidence of Vitimin D deficiency in their population, and so they have far lower number of Covid deaths than global average (where majority of populations are vitamin D deficient). In recent months (since they started more comprehensive testing) the Swedish CFR is only about 0.3-0.4% Iceland is about the same. most western countries are several times that level. Vitamin D supplements are a clear and cheap way to save a shit-load of lives

I guess it’s the cosy little arrangement NZH have with Labour in order to gain access to the media slush fund grants but also look like they are showing views from the left and the right. ie the right leaning views are behind the paywall and the pro left wing views are all free.

The state Senate of Idaho has passed a law banning schools from forcing students to “personally affirm, adopt, or adhere to” certain Critical Race Theory teachings.

Critical Race Theory, according to the Wikipedia listing, is:

…. an academic movement made up of civil-rights scholars and activists in the United States who seek to critically examine the law as it intersects with issues of race, and to challenge mainstream liberal approaches to racial justice. CRT examines social and cultural issues as they relate to race, law, and social and political power.

Brittanica starts its definition:

Critical Race Theory (CRT), intellectual movement and loosely organized framework of legal analysis based on the premise that race is not a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of human beings but a socially constructed (culturally invented) category that is used to oppress and exploit people of colour. Critical race theorists hold that the law and legal institutions in the United States are inherently racist insofar as they function to create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and non-whites, especially African Americans.

Brittanica traces Critical Race Theory to the Critical Legal Studies movement, whose origins seem to be Marxist.

  Seems quite similar to the infamous 1920s Tennessee law prohibiting the teaching of evolution.
  I doubt that the Idaho law could reduce any (largely imaginary) influence of critical race theory, as it seems highly unlikely that teachers are actually requiring pupils to “personally affirm, adopt, or adhere to” such teachings.
  Suppression of ideas will not work outside of an authoritarian environment.

  This is a very ugly cunning stunt by the stunning people in the Ministry of Education.
  They would never ever make knowledge of the Maori language compulsory.
  What they do is go around it.
  To be employed as a teacher one must be certified by the Teachers’ Registration Board.
  To renew your application to the Teachers’ Registration Board one must declare that you have studied the Maori language and customs of the Maori people. They use the term Tikanga.
  I am reminded of Sir George Grey’s comment about Ngaruawahia, circa 1863; “we will not destroy the Maori King movement; we will dig around it and it will fall by itself”.
  It will sadden me to see our education system fall.

It was revealed yesterday that a New Zealander was able to board a plane in Perth while the Western Australian city was in lockdown, and then fly to Auckland via Sydney even though transtasman flights from that state were meant to be on hold.
Bloomfield said the man who boarded a plane in Perth while the city was in lockdown was still being investigated.
“Any person who enters NZ who is ineligible for quarantine free travel is required to isolate for 14 days.”
A fine up to $4000 or six months’ jail is the penalty for breaching the Air Border order, he said.
The risk from the person’s travel to New Zealand was “low”, and he had not attended any of the locations of interest in Perth.
The Covid-19 response relied on people following the rules, he said.
Verrall said the bubble with Perth had just been reopened, the risk was low from the traveller, and he “was detected”.
Bloomfield added that the system picked up about 70 people who were prevented from travelling to New Zealand.
He said the person was now in a managed isolation facility.
Earlier today Immigration NZ manager Peter Elms said the breach was found during routine passenger checks after the man arrived in New Zealand on Monday.
The passenger is now self-isolating in Northland.
“He had left the airport by the time we realised that that was a passenger that had come from Perth and was ineligible,” Elms told RNZ.
The ministry said the public health safety risk was assessed as low.

The Government has today appointed a “Minister for Announcements.”
This announcement was announced at an announcement hosted by the Acting Minister for the Announcement of the Minister for Announcements, Chris Hipkins, while he was IDed on his way into the Upper Hutt Cossie Club.
Hipkins said: “For too long, Ministers have had to make individual announcements about their own announcements. National’s nine years of neglect almost certainly caused this crisis. It is time to centralise announcements to improve efficiency. Centralising always works.”

This is just another embarrassing chapter from a Labour Party that only cares for themselves and know that most people that vote them are there for the handouts and will never be a first home buyer.

  I wonder how many are sitting empty.
  
  Seems the Education Dept has bought a house hereabouts, but it’s had windows boarded up for months now.
  
  State housing provider Kāinga Ora says it’s no longer a state house, but was sold to the Ministry of Education last year for $180,000.
  
  The Ministry of Education says the house isn’t suitable for tenants and is boarded up, because the windows have been removed.

Tonight TVOne news ran a story about National being warned for not declaring an election donation… no mention of the Maori Party being referred to the Serious Fraud Office.
