There has been a increased reporting of sexual abuse and a string of serious assaults including a fatal assault outside Te Papa earlier this year.

    Complex needs are what some people are born with (disabilities etc). Others adopt the term for getting things others don’t get. It’s rather like kids, they try things on, we all did. Some throw a tanty and get picked up and cuddled and given a sweet or biscuit previously denied them. Then, they adopt that Complex Need behavior as a means of getting whatever they want.
    I’m sick and tired of hearing about people living in taxpayer-funded Motel Units as being of Complex Need. Yea, they know if they are of a certain colour, scream loudly enough and have a big enough following (kids), they will be given a gratus Motel Unit until the taxpayer builds and settles said person in a State-Owned house.

    Maori lost rights to old customs including, killing each other, when they ceded sovereignty to the British Crown. It cannot be colonialism in any form when they had to change their ways. Perhaps we should have charged more for taking on that burden of care and providing a future which they could not provide themselves. On balance they haven’t done too badly out of it with massive tax free state handouts from generation to generation.

        Then there is GST, GST on Rates, GST all over the place – and the soon to come Capital Gains.

More than 1000 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza since the violence began recently. Unfortunately the Biden administration has emboldened Iran which is funding Hamas and the weaponry being used against Israel. Last year the Trump administration were instrumental in getting signed peace agreements between Israel and Arab states. That has all changed with the Biden administration. Trump might put out mean tweets but in my mind that is a small price to pay for peace in the Middle East.

Also on Powerline this morning they note Donald Trump is permanently banned from Twitter apparently for “inciting violence” at the January 6 demonstrations. However given the selective nature of big tech it is no surprise to find out that the Ayatollah Khomeini has a live Twitter account where he encourages attacks on Israel. It is an amazing thing when an American company can ban the previous president from its platform while embracing a sworn enemy of America. That is the crazy, dare I say treasonous, nature of our modern Western elite. They hate their own country while supporting their enemies.

    The housing “dispute” was settled in court 40 or 50 years ago kowtow. The current owners actually owned the property in dispute under Ottoman law. The Israeli courts ruled that the tenants had “protected leasehold rights” but had no ownership rights. The leases have now expired. The Arabs involved could have been given title by the Jordanians when they illegally occupied the area in 1948, by the Jordanian Custodian of Enemy Property. And if the JCEP had given title, the Israeli court would have upheld the Arab claim. But they didn’t, and the court could not. Long and short, the property is owned by Jews, and has been since Ottoman times.

    I’d like people to stop using the term “Anti-Semite” in the context of the modern world. When Jews were the only Semitic people in Europe and were getting screwed over by the locals, the term was appropriate.

Now I understand HDI isn’t perfect, but I could do the same with GDP, life expectancy, et al and it paints a similar picture. In each category, at least one country was never colonised by Europeans. South Asia there are actually two, in the Middle East there are three. Can you tell from this information which countries were not colonised?

There is no correlation between colonisation in the past and HDI today. What this tells us is that it is not colonisation that determines the current success of a nation, despite the fact many horrible things may have happened during colonial periods, nor is it racism. Rather it is access to resources, level of corruption, culture, stability of government, freedom of the economy, war, ethnic or religious tension and similar factors that determine the current success of the nation.

    HDI is a mathematical formula that is a function of life expectancy, access to education and GNI per capita. Don’t ask me how it works, it’s just a good baseline to start with because data is almost universally available for nations and states, and often available for smaller groups.

  HDI is essentially a basic measure of how high the material quality of life is in a given population. The closer to 1 the value is the higher the quality of life is. It takes into consideration life expectancy, access to education and GNI per capita. It’s used almost universally to compare the development of countries.

      IF you go to the web site below you can get the really long read: 412 pages of the United Nations Human Development Report 2020, which centres on the Human Development Index. It includes HDI figures for countries such as China and Zimbabwe.
      
      To me, it’s a crock. This is from the foreword:
      
      “Humans have achieved incredible things, but we have taken the Earth to the brink. Climate change, rupturing inequalities, record numbers of people forced from their homes by conflict and crisis—these are the results of societies that value what they measure instead of measuring what they value.”

      2. “Climate” in the scientific sense is a statistical concept.
      
      Thousands of thermometers show Earth is warming at a time in the cycle it would normally be cooling. The cause is more CO2 and other non-condensible GHGs in the atmosphere. Irrefutable.

  We’d all expect the range to show Pakeha to be way above 0.931 and Maori to be way less. The question is ‘how much less?’. E. G. Tonga less. The other questions are ‘how different is HDI for Tongans in NZ? And dare I ask ‘What about the 100,000 Maori living in Australia?

    Great question, no I don’t.
    
    20 years ago it was estimated that it was about 0.1 lower than the national average, just below 0.8. One could argue this is a result of colonialism.
    
    But. It’s also much higher than just about anywhere else in the world at the time, higher than any other country that was not colonised by Europeans. And we can tell from the rest of the data that it is other factors such that influence HDI rather than colonisation. Merely being proportionally less well off than a different demographic in the same society doesn’t mean colonialism is to blame.

  Not so sure about that. The ones formerly controlled by Britain are generally ahead. The former French (or Belgian) ones are the worst.
  
  Also, don’t forget Haiti which has been independent for 200 years, more than long enough to undo the damage from colonisation and forge ahead as a beacon of hope for the world. But is actually the worst place to live in the Caribbean.

    Actually you do make a good point, certain colonisers do seem to have on average different outcomes. But when DR Congo, arguably the worlds worst colony by the worlds worst colonisers (the Belgians) is near as makes no difference the same score as Ethiopia (never colonised) it’s clear that the coloniser itself is still of little consequence in the overall situation today.

Looks like the Golden Globes movie awards are dead. Broadcasters have pulled out. Previous award winners are returning their awards.

Why? Well it appears that the main reason is about diversity. The outfit that runs the awards is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. And someone complained it was not diverse enough. Not enough “people of colour”. And no Taiwanese foreign correspondents at all. ? So this has developed into a firestorm and it looks like the awards will be no more.

At the moment in Dunedin there are five former refugee families living in motels as there was no housing for them .

This as the Ardern govt resumes refugee intake and as the Greens call for a larger intake.

  Our local mayor, in her wisdom, is totally keen to have 100 refugee families come to Masterton as soon as possible. Where will they put them?

Not all even came from warzones, when they came from Bangladesh and pretended to be Aghans, or came from sub-saharan Africa. Then there is the issue of queue jumpers in the Pacific, and those that employ people smugglers.
    
    I was amazed to hear that MIQ was opening space for 400 international students, but that the moment it opens up we also allocated 100 for refugees.

    Not actually needed at the best of times.
    We need pragmatism in our recovery from government responses to Covid, rather than virtue signalling.

Interesting article in the Herald online from 2 days ago with the headline referring to right wing extremists.

The article only provided one actual example of right wing extremists – in the USA – where the report referred to Islamist, right-wing and other extremists.
Then the article points to another report that specifically points to Islamist extremism in NZ – “But another report, also released under the OIA, detailed the risk profile of Islamist extremists in New Zealand” – and yet the headline had to be about right wing extremism?
Given the timing of the article and the headline, this appears to be just another example of diversion from the real (or damaging to the government) news by the tame MSM.

Wellington City Council social housing heading for insolvency in just 2 years, so looking to taxpayers to pay up. Bigly. $400million shortfall predicted. The council’s social housing was always required to be self funding, so not topped up by ratepayers. Taxpayers are fair game though. (Though I’ll bet there are costs quietly slipped in to fudgebudgets.)

This is not a new issue. The government provided hundreds of millions 10 or so years ago to upgrade council social housing. Council to match it IIRC. They did match it, and spent it but without completing about half the work required.

Random impertinent questions.

#1. Was there a business case for the upgrades back in 2008, or indeed any social housing business cases since?

#2. Where are the post implementation reviews?

#3. Has the council any clue about managing a large housing portfolio and associated budget?

  As far as I understand it, Councils can’t take advantage of the Income Related Rent Scheme (IRRS) run by MSD.
  
  This would mean that either their tenants can’t afford the rents, or the Councils need to charge below market rents.
  
  The latter generally means operating at a loss, which is further likely to mean the stock is not maintained adequately.
  
  It would be far better to hand over the stock to a Community Housing Trust (CHT) that can use the IRRS. I think this has been done in Auckland and Tauranga. CHTs also more able to leverage the assets to help maintain and further develop the stock.
  
  So why do Councils operate social housing?

    Wellington CC does charge below market rents (30% below) for low income tenants. When the council tried to obtain verification from tenants that the income they reported to rent reviews was correct there was outrage from tenants. Assume the council caved as it all went very quiet. I think this was 2019.
    
    Council tenants can qualify for Accommodation Supplement, unlike tenants on income related rents. Some tenants have been in Wellington council housing for decades. I know a couple, and they are not poor by any means.
    
    And the council recently built a new social housing complex and leased it long term to Kainga Ora so tenants there do get IRR. So Wellington CC gets low income tenants anyway.
    
    Point is the council is not managing its housing stock and tenants within budget. Why?

Why is no mention made, in the new $8 million fan access plan, of concrete that was poured down the ‘slimline’ shaft, into a fresh air base only a couple of metres from the inner mine end of the second roof fall, and which may now block the access passage to the fan?

This morning a Families’ statement [1] points out –
“If the police borehole drilling creates a new roof collapse as it did at borehole 50, then their efforts will not uncover evidence but will instead bury that vital evidence forever,”

However expert electrician and investigator, Richard Healey, last November around the 10th anniversary of the disaster, informed media that in 2011, 350 cubic tonnes of concrete was poured into the mine, likely entombing any remains of miners who may have gathered in slimline shaft fresh air base.

Healey said – “We have the invoices for the material, 105 tonnes shipped from Australia in seven shipping containers. We have eyewitness testimony from people who put material down the shaft, the process took three days. We know that the contract which was signed to do that specified that 350 cubic metres of material would be used.” […]
Healey also said – that there is “a lot of evidence” some of the miners survived the first explosion on November 19, 2010 and they likely would have gathered at the fresh air base. If they had, their bodies may now be entombed in concrete. [2]

The invoices [3] can be found on the Internet, for materials and labour, and it does seem the work was done. “The shaft and void below it need to be filled to isolate the cracks effectively and prevent the gases escaping at the source” – document 12

However, Volume 2 of the Pike River Royal Commission Report mentions the same slimline shaft location –
173. On Wednesday 24 November the area at the bottom of the slimline shaft was scanned using a C-ALS (Cavity Auto Scanning Laser System) laser device […]
175. [despite poor images] equipment in the stub was still clearly visible, and in Mr Taylor’s opinion the lid of one of the large blue boxes [holding rescue equipment] was open. […]
176. On 17 February the crew rescanned the slimline shaft. This revealed that there had been a major roof collapse in the drift, which caused spoil to spill into the stub over the area where the three boxes were positioned, so no further evidence was obtained. [4]

A comparison between scans on November 24, just after the first explosion, but before the second, and 17 February, after all the other explosions, indicates –
1) the roof fall occurred after the 1st explosion not during it, although Richard Healey says the 1 tonne part of the main fan housing may have actually caused the roof fall and that, he says, was during the first explosion, and –
2) if a portion of the roof fall entered the stub and covered the blue boxes, how much of the concrete poured down the shaft may have spilt onto the ‘workings’ end of the roof fall, and may now partly block access to the main ventilation fan – so access to it may not be as simple as shovelling through some “well crushed coal”?

Surely a source of ignition is only part of the evidence investigators seek, and an explanation is required for a “massive amount of methane” in an area where there should have been none. Without such an explanation, how could any prosecution be successful?
Has Little sought Crown Law Office opinion on anything relating to Pike River?

On Tuesday evening a THREE news item did mentioned points already covered and presumably considered but not acted on by the Pike River Commission of Inquiry –
Commissioning and operation of the fan.
65. The main fan was first operated on 4 October 2010, but sparks came from the fan shaft at the junction with the intake stopping through which it passed. To resolve the problem Pike removed a brass bush, which formed a seal between the drive shaft and the stopping.This left a gap which Mr Sanders estimated was at least 20mm. Mr White accepted there was potential for methane-contaminated air to leak through the gap if the fan was not operating.
– Royal Commission on the Pike River Coal Mine Tragedy Volume 2 page 93
(Is the brass bush in the mine or removed to a surface workshop and perhaps sitting on a shelf?)

However, if there is in fact investigation that shows the first explosion did originate from the main fan or its parts, and someone prosecuted, the obvious defence would be that components left-out of the fan’s final assembly, or any other factor that caused static, or sparking, theoretically wasn’t supposed to be a problem, because the fan was in a “non-restricted” area of the mine, where gas levels were supposed to be negligible.

The Royal Commission report does point out that there was no ventilation manager. So does responsibility rest with the mine manager, or ventilation system designer (particularly as it seems to be the only mine fan installed underground, world-wide) or installers, since it was apparently incomplete?

Note – What is referred to above as “concrete” may be “expandable grout” or “ACS high yield foaming grout”. It is estimated about 203 cubic metres would fill the slimline shaft interior, leaving 147 cubic metres to flood the stub or fresh air base and some surrounding areas, given that roof fall from those areas had already partly encroached into the fresh air base.

  Massive works in a gas producing mine are almost certain to cause an explosion. Even a miner’s helmet brushing against another fitting could be sufficient. A metal toe cap could do it or brushing a jersey. A very tiny spark, virtually unseen is enough. The mine was not a kids playground although now its a political one.
  Too much attention has been given to irrelevancies with static electricity being the most likely fire starter.
  
  Does this govt not have any sensible engineering/electrical advisers available?
  The mine should never have been built as a closed mine. That was contrary to international practice. If I can readily find this out why couldn’t they? It only takes basic know how to understand the danger warnings about static and gasses. Did politics get in the way of sense?

Often times, after driving my car, the static electricity that builds in my body from sitting on the vinyl seats is enough so that – when I stop & get out of the car and shut the door, a visible spark about 15 mm long with a small cracking sound, sometimes jumps from my finger to the metal door, and has on 2 occasions left a burn mark on the end of my finger.         The reason to “bother” is that knowledge is worth seeking.
        When you lack knowledge on a particular topic, you should seek some before commenting as if you do have that knowledge.
        
        In some instances general knowledge, no matter how well you believe it to be justified, is insufficient to pass judgement on specific areas of specialised knowledge and practice.
        
        You appear to reject research on mitigation of static electricity in underground mines when commenting on static electricity in underground mines because you have looked at other practices for underground mines.

      Golriz Ghahraman and her family display an interesting phenomena in that it appears they did not actually become refugees until they asked for asylum – they foresaw possible problems with the mother studying as a child psychologist but ethically opposed to “psychologists having to pledge allegiance to a religion” so refused to sit the Islamic examinations required for her to practice and never worked as such.

      A major concern when they entered the country apparently was whether they carried any fruit they should not have.

He told me the clients spoke Welsh because they knew he couldn’t join in. I went over and talked to a bunch a locals who immediately switched to English when I told them I was a kiwi. They said they didn’t want to talk to the publican because they didn’t like the English.

Northern Outlook:
A Canterbury car dealership’s advertisement has been pulled down due to the mispronunciation of a te reo Maori place name.
This followed a complaint about Rangiora Toyota’s long-running radio ad to the Advertising Standards Authority.
The radio ad, which had been played on air for 5 years, included a jingle with the incorrect pronunciation at the beginning and end.
The word Rangiora was said twice more in the body of the ad, but pronounced correctly.
The ASA Complaints Board unanimously agreed the mispronunciation caused harm to the language and was likely to offend consimers.
“Te Reo Maori is an official language of New Zealand and should be pronounced correctly in a broadcast environment.”

Anyone see this decision opening up a ‘can of worms’ for plays on words.

    If the advertiser chooses, the advertiser’s surely entitled to have the town of his business pronounced the way customers pronounce it.

  There is no official pronunciation as there is no definitive Maori. The language may vary by district of use.
  
  Seven tribes from different places arrived in NZ and have to be considered as separate national groups. Had any previously known each other it may have been in battle.
  They shared a mainly common Polynesian dialect with their own differences. They have never coalesced into one nation and there is no official Maori language. A Maori language is recognised but that has to include all the tribal variants. We learnt that as kids that there were differences in other parts of NZ as to how Maori was spoken.
  The present misuse of Maori will ruin it. It has a very limited vocabulary and too much borrowing has already occurred. It is ridiculous to find a transliterated English word in an English sentence. Other Pacific nations have addressed these problems by seeing that English was available for instruction and commerce and the national language for familial conversation.

I have a soft spot for Chloe Swarbrick. One of the reasons is that before the 2017 General Election she was at a provincial airport waiting for a flight to Auckland.
So were my older sister and brother, and me.
My brother, who was to be on the same flight, engaged her in conversation because he thought a Swarbrick he knew was related to her.
He wasn’t but she was nevertheless courteous and engaging.
I can’t remember who suggested it but my brother, sister, and I talked among ourselves about getting a photo taken of the three of us.
Chloe volunteered to take one so I gave her my phone and she clicked away.
What resulted was a series of photos before my brother became unwell, and now frail, lives in a care home.
So that’s my soft spot for Chloe.
I am not a Greens supporter. I have known of far too many Green MPs who have not practised what they preached and finger-wagged at the rest of us.
Censorious, holier-than-thou, judgmental.
I didn’t support Chloe’s tireless campaigning to decriminalise the taking of illegal drugs.
Now the news tells us that she is planning a private member’s bill aimed at alcohol – to remove the normalisation and glamourisation of alcohol, she says.
I wonder if she sees the irony?

I thought the most interesting thing from yesterday’s contretemps in Parliament was the comment that indigenous rights can only be determined by indigenous people.

Well – up to a point, as they say. If my name were really Albert Ross (sorry to disappoint!) it would certainly be my right to ask to be called Al, not Bert, and to think you rude if you still called me Bert. The fact that you know other Alberts happy to be called Bert does not make it ok; the argument that you are being “fair and equitable” by calling all of us the same doesn’t hold. Thus, it’s not as simple as saying everybody should be treated the same regardless of race – that’s not fair or equitable when one race likes the said treatment and the other doesn’t.

On the other hand I’d be pushing it to demand to be called Mr Ross, let alone Dr or Lord or even Dame Albert. And I’d certainly be on dodgy ground trying to self-determine my preference that you all send me $50 per week. The rest of you definitely do get an opinion on the matter when my self-determined rights would impose actual costs on you.

Does our objection to separate, differential rights for Maori rest only on the issue of the possible costs to others, or is there more to it? (Personally I don’t think “because it’s RACIST” is in itself a full and satisfactory argument here, any more than it is when used by the whole to try to stop debate).

  That self determinism is fine if they really want it, so long as those people then live their lives and make their decisions that do not impact on other people.

Local farmer. Jane Smith, says the Government’s billion trees policy provides a free pass for carbon farmers at a time when new rules restrict what other landowners can do.
Smith says local district and regional council politicians were shocked at the unkempt state of the forest when they visited recently.
There were no fire breaks and no apparent weed or pest control.
NZCF said in a statement: “Our trees are never harvested. Instead, they are actively managed to return, over time, to a 100% indigenous and biodiverse conservation estate.”

I really despair over this them v. us (Maori v. non-Maori) carry on. I am what I hope is a great mix of both, and I do not accept one side or the other as one hundred percent correct in all matters. I would hazard a guess that there are few if any 100% Maori in NZ so if many who line up on the Maori side could just consider their other heritage now and then maybe we could all live as one people?

  There are too many similarities between the He Puapua report and the Maori Party’s policies to be a coincidence, or to have been arrived at completely independently.
  
  Over the past weeks I’ve heard various people try to downplay He Puapua, minimise the suggestions of handing over DoC land to Maori, and level accusations of racism against anybody who raises concerns.
  
  But these aren’t just reports being written by very junior officials (someone suggested this on HDPA’s show last night, re the DoC proposal), these are wide-ranging proposals being made at very senior levels. He Puapua is the result of a Declaration Working Group (DWG) that was set up by the Labour-New Zealand First coalition to devise a plan and vision on just how New Zealand would meet our commitment to supporting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. It’s about as high level as you can get.
  
  Judith Collins is absolutely right to continue in her questioning of Maori co-governance proposals. How on earth can the Maori Party accuse her of racism for asking about this? It’s their actual policy!

  An international agreement gave East Jerusalem to the Palestinians who turned it down and instead tried to murder all the Jews and take all of Israel (with the help of their neighbors) – even to the extent that they moved away to neighboring countries so as not to be caught up in the ethnic cleansing. When Israel wiped the floor with the combined forces of their Middle Eastern enemies they took their land back.
  
  The Palestinians then tried claiming the land that they had previously turned down and Israel basically refused, given the attempts to murder them. “International Law” is supposedly on the Palestinian’s side but Israel were never happy about the total lack of accountability for the attempted murder of their people and still believe that land is rightly theirs, won through a land war, started by the Palestinians and their neighbors.

    About forty years ago I did some house drawings for some people who were part owners of Maori land near Thames.
    They consulted all the other joint owners, everything was tickity boo & they applied for a permit, as it was called in those days, and then the nastiness began.
    It turned out that in the gold mining days people were given prospecting licenses on Maori land around there whether the owners liked it or not.
    As part of the license the prospector could build a basic hut to live in for the duration. However when the licenses lapsed succeeding generations of the mining families stayed on and replaced the huts with houses on the Maori land.
    Around the time I became involved on the sidelines the Maoris wanted their land back. They didn’t want it back so much as wanted these people off. I’m not sure what happened, but I believe my clients might have come up against some squatters who worked at the council. It didn’t effect their land, but the bad feeling against Maori land owners was transferable so got a rough time from inspectors etc.
    I wonder what would have happened if a bunch of Maoris had bowled up waving title to the land and chucked a family out of what they thought was their home?
    I’m guessing here, but I think I’d know who’d be on which side.

  I saw that earlier today JibberJabber and, while I’m not remotely an expert on this (or anything), that looked to me a level of rocketry I thought unavailable to Palestinians – the rocketry I’ve usually seen is single or double barrel stuff with a three or four man squad operating out of some backyard.
  
  That video looks to me like tens of rocket units all working in unison and, what, operating out of some large field or rural area, with no cover?

today he tells us 232000 vaccines administered
60000 people fully vaccinated ie 120 000 vaccines delivered to these people
112 000 with one vaccine awaiting their 2nd dose.
with 68000 doses left we don’t have enough to administer all the 2nd doses.
Hipkins a month or so ago said the next delivery was due in June.
With their “target” of 10000 per day, we have less than a week left.
Q: What happens to the rest of us?

Christ Almighty. It’s going to take an age to vaccinate this country for COVID.

First vaccines arrived on 15 Feb 2021 (https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/first-batch-covid-19-vaccine-arrives-nz#:~:text=The%20first%20batch%20of%20COVID,Airport%20at%209.34am%20today.)

As of today, we had 120,000 fully vaccinated people in the 3 months since then (https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/125119588/covid19-dr-ashley-bloomfield-giving-vaccine-update).

That’s 40,000 people per month fully vaccinated.

The population of NZ is 5,084,000 people of which approx 80% are over the age of 16 for a total of 4,064,000 people requiring the vaccine.

Assuming we aim for herd immunity, 70% of those need to be vaccinated for a total of 2,845,000 people.

If we carry on at the rate of vaccinations we’re completing now, it’ll take 71 months to achieve full vaccination for 70% of the adult population. That’s 6 years.

Unless I’ve absolutely ****** the maths, if they’re aiming to vaccinate all 70% by the end of the year, the number of people vaccinated each month needs to increase 10-fold instantly!

I can’t see this happening.

  The bit you’re not factoring in is the pace of deliveries.
  
  Pfizer has always said they would ramp up the rate of deliveries significantly from June onwards (I’m not sure if that’s 1 June or 30 June). Basically their US production is committed to the US market for now, but as the US vaccination programme winds down that US manufacturing capacity can switch to deliveries for other countries like us.
  
  Basically, from Feb to June is “vaccinate as many high-priority people as we can given the limited supplies we receive” and then from June-ish onwards it’s “vaccinate everyone as fast as we can”.

Since reliable mortality data existed (c1980 onwards) Pacific mortality has been intermediary between European/Other and Maori.
This is despite, on average, a lower socioeconomic position of Pacific than Maori, and often healthier risk factor profiles.
Pacific people often have lower smoking rates.

  Because of higher wage and salary rates we’ve lost people to Aussie for the last 150 years – and we will continue to do so for the next 150.
  
  And, losing people to Aussie doesn’t alter the fact that those employed by the NZ government have not suffered anywhere remotely as greatly, as a result of our Covid response, as those in the private sector – and I personally think it appropriate that public sector employees shoulder a little of the burden, through wage restraint, in recognition of this fact.
  
  BTW – it is both obscene and perverse for the various public sector union howler monkeys to be screeching about ‘austerity’ – while this Labour government spends at levels unknown in NZ’s history.

Electric cars and bans on petrol and diesel vehicles could force everyone except the rich out of driving motor-vehicles, says the chief of the world’s fifth biggest car maker.

The warning comes from Carlos Tavares, chief executive of Stellantis, whose brands include Fiat, Chrysler, Citroen, Jeep, Dodge, Peugeot, Vauxhall, Alfa-Romeo, Maserati, and RAM.

Tavares says the rush to electric cars may make motor-vehicles too expensive for nations’ middle classes.

The Telegraph reports Tavares as saying: “I can’t imagine a democratic society where there is no freedom of mobility because it’s only for wealthy people and all the others will use public transport.”

Tavares added: “How can we protect freedom of mobility for the middle class who may not be able to afford 30,000 euros for a battery electric vehicle when today they pay half that for the same product with a conventional engine?”

That raises a few interesting questions:
1) WTF does she know about business? Why even send her? I can’t see the Aussie business community fawning over her.
2) C’mon it’s the 2000s we don’t need to send people anywhere (esp. not to Oz) Skype/whatever will do the job.

  She sounded as conservative as can be. There’s no way she’d either want to be a Democrat or they would want her on their team.

Jesus.
I almost cried when I read this.
I have 3 healthy children and 5 healthy grandchildren and for that I am incredibly grateful.
I can’t help thinking that all the multi-millions of dollars spent on government crap and identity crap and treaty crap would be so much better spent on these families.
There but for the grace of God go I.

Ardern doesn’t trust that supply will meet demand despite stocks of vaccine rolling in weekly so putting on the brakes before there is an accidental undersupply. Which is one of the stupidest fucking things I’ve heard her say. Any stock manager can see the absurdity in the situation.

This is frustrating.

As soon as the Vaccine was approved the trucks rolled out of the depot and the States were left to set up vaccine centers and we had all the queue jumping and call center waits and irritating booking software to navigate back in Feb. Now fully immunized like 30 million other Californians. NZ is taking all year to vaccinate and another to open the border. I see Ardern was trying to sell it to Business NZ today and I bet they were laughing their arses off.

I’ve just heard on RNZ driving home in the car Ardern quoted by their political reporter Jane Patterson as saying, in response to parties associated with Labour being charged with electoral donation offences, “it’s concerning that there are so many people being charged; maybe it’s time to change the law…..” (paraphrased by me).

Patterson then added “may be no law changes are what’s needed – what’s needed is for people to comply with existing laws….” (my words).

FFS – when I’ve got time I’ll look up the RNZ piece – but, if true, Ardern has dropped her guard on this one and revealed her true self. Her priority is people not being charged – not people complying with the law. And such important law.

“It’s the law that’s the problem, everyone’s doing it. We need to change the law, now move on…..”

  Lady on talkback the other day was saying how in Whakatane or TePuke (can’t recall which), mongrel mob members frequently stroll into the supermarket and just take what they want without paying. Not even trying to hide this behaviour.
