Researchers warn against becoming too dependent on Hydrogen to power cars.
Using hydrogen as a source of power has its drawbacks- among them the cost and the inefficient use of energy- but researchers are now warning against hydrogen for other reasons.
Guardian reports scarcity and subsequent dependence on fossil fuels, hydrogen- based fuels are already expensive and while there is also research to suggest that growing demand could enable prices, even a large scale swap isn’t going to create the infrastructure needed to distribute hydrogen on a large scale, demand also is not going to immediately solve Hydrogen on a large scale, demand also isn’t going to immediately solve Hydrogens other main issues, that you get less energy per unit volume than other fuels, that liquefaction ( as in simple ability to easy refill fuel tank at the pump ) is challenging and costly, on hydrogen volatility and your going to face exact problems you currently have with the meager electric charging infrastructure but things are amplified.

So it looks like our knowledgeable Prime Minister well in her opinion and her bunch of not so knowledgeable Ministers are pouring heeps of our taxpayer dollars into a hydrogen factory without thinking of the consequences and cost to New Zealander’s.

      Recently there have been international calls to focus on sorting world methane first.
      
      That does two things:
      1. Puts focus on the bad nitrate leaching, pooing bovines. A much easier sell.
      2. Shifts focus off CO2 and global warming.

      Yes it’s a spurious correlation, but so is saying that a sea level rise will decimate the global population, when obviously it hasn’t in the past.

  Interesting that those that support it seem to be those who have a vested interest (and with their hands out wanting Government funding), usually not addressing the many issues with the technology, mainly being energy intensive to produce and difficult to transport with it being very “leaky”.

    If hydrogen is to be the fuel of the future, I’m sure commercial enterprise would have been onto it like a flash, not seeking Govt handouts for an investigation and possible startup capital. Sounds rather like Akld’s Light Rail network to me where it was only ever seen as a goer by Govt and then only as a vote catcher.

  The only way to address an energy shortage is to address energy density. Hydrogen has a low density. Coal and oil are highly dense. Atomic energy is the most dense (that we can currently control). The lower the density, the higher the cost, ipso facto hydrogen is expensive.
  
  Taking the focus off hydrogen and turning it towards atomic energy will address almost all of the current issues, climate change as it is clean and green, and any perceived energy shortage.
  
  So, what do the serial downtickers have to say about this?

  You may recall that I warned that this was coming this year as a friend had been set a curriculum to “address racism” in her primary school class.
  
  Unless parents make the effort to address this issue it will become far worse, especially as “parental input” within schools is reduced by the “recentralisation” with the roll back of “tomorrow’s schools”, a previous labour government’s initiative.

  I was going to comment/ask how does this help any New Zealand child in mainstream schooling?
  
  This is frightening, and will only serve to foster “white privlege:” further as “whitey” removes their children from mainstream state schools, leading to the separatism that Judith Collins has been warning of.
  
  Even worse, when we already have NZ school children falling behind their international peers in maths, science and literacy we have educationalists trying to fill the school sylabus with this form of indoctrination, we have to fear for the future of NZ.

      Very soon there will be more Indian people in New Zealand than Maori – and they will be expected to learn Maori of which something like 2% of Maori already speak it fluently. Am not sure about written Maori.
      I bet 100% of these Indians already speak and write an Indian dialectic language.
      Chinese too, Mandarin and Cantonese, so Maori will soon be the lowest of their language learners.

Well, previously we could have blamed Kelvin Davis but now he has been relieved of this ever so important Portfolio, the blame for this can certainly be laid at the feet of Chris Hipkins and his radical Teachers Union. Surely the system is working if people are being prosecuted for breaking electoral finance laws. I would be more concerned if people weren’t being prosecuted. It is in human nature for people to find ways to skirt the rules or find what they consider to be grey areas.

Of course this will never stop those like Labour and the Greens for using it as an excuse to be solely funded by the taxpayer, which will no doubt lead to more and more money being allocated to them. Would it stop private money? I doubt it. Instead we’d see more third party organisations registering and probably less oversight.

Some theology for your Sunday morning. What do these things have in common?
Abortion, euthanasia, gender equality, homosexuality, covid lockdown and climate change?

They all hinge on man’s mastery over the world and his life. They all hinge on the original sin in Genesis when the snake said to Eve, eat of the fruit and you will be like God.

Abortion means we can have sex and yet control our fertility and not have to have a baby. Euthanasia says it is my life and I will choose the time and manner of my death and not God.

Gender equality says we will shape male and female according to our wishes and preferences. Not God’s design.

Homosexuality says we will ignore the Bible injunctions, “it’s a sin”.

Covid lockdown says with science and technology and control over the people we can defeat a virus. We can master disease and death.

Climate change says mankind can even control the weather.

This is what happens when people decide to live without God. They fall prey to megalomania and think they are the sum of all things. It’s all comes back to the original sin – wanting to be like God. Otherwise known as “pride”.

We should each person turn back to God. Because all those above things don’t make our lives better. They make us crazy.
Jesus said, “I came to give life and life more abundant”. That’s the right path, the good path for our lives.

        Well, I’m well past my 30s and never had an abortion or racked up much of a “body count” [whatever that means – for example ICE-T has a rather different definition]. But if I did so what? And for those women that have – so what? If you don’t like it stay away.

It is also scientifically and medically incorrect. Within the womb, he or she is (respectively, going forward in time) a zygote, morula, blastocyst, embryo or fetus. I spend a great deal of my time working out if drugs and chemicals are safe for pregnant women (and their fetuses) as well as children, and what their dose levels should look like, so please don’t accuse me of [any] of the things you were just about to say.
      
      Also for the 700,000th time, fetus is the correct term and is derived from latin (“fetale” meaning “offspring”). In contrast “foetus” is NOT the correct English spelling and never has been, it was a spelling mistake in an illuminated manuscript from the 15th century.

If you read the link, you will see the authors recommend using hydrogen for long distance aviation. How will the hydrogen be stored on a plane? In cryogenic form? Or just as rows of gas cylinders?
A long distance plane can store about 500MWh of fuel on board. You can’t get a battery that big and if as hydrogen storage, it would be heavier than the plane.
Yet another case of academics working in a world of spherical cows.

  Idiot academics are missing the obvious, use Methanol. Can be efficiently manufactured from captured carbon/electricity at higher efficiency than hydrogen, or biomass if that’s available, or fossil fuels if the need be, and it’s only 60% the energy density as kerosene in a liquid form, as opposed to hydrogen which has to be stored at 400 bar to be anywhere close to usable. It can be catalysed to Dimethyl Ether which is 50% more energy dense again, for a small efficiency cost (but must be stored as a low pressure liquified gas). Best of all, all the challenges can be met with 70s technology, not 2040s tech. Also much of the lost efficiency in the process could be recovered as low grade heat energy suitable for heating the multitude of buildings that pop up around airports these days.

    There are significant issues with methanol as a fuel, like it attacking plastics, low calorific value and propensity to absorb water.
    It was used in high performance engines because it has a high octane rating so you can run high compression ratios, high heat of vapourisation cooled the engine and they didn’t care about fuel economy.

  Just hypothetically, consider what might have been had no outsider ever come near these shores. Where would the indigenous people have been in their development? It is logical to believe they would have made little progress on their pre ‘white privilege’ situation. They were nowhere near the standard of living and development of the European nations.
  
  Did they live in some idylic paradise? No. The exact opposite. It is apparent life was miserable, fightening, very limited in quality and duration.
  
  So “white privilege” may have its drawbacks and its own problems but Maori are better off now collectively than they were and could have been staying on their own.

    If no Europeans had taken over in NZ? Maori were trading with Europeans before the Treaty, so they could have continued to do so. I understand Maori mainly sold food and fibre. Technological improvements in other countries have made those trades unnecessary.
    They would have had to find something else to sell. I’m not sure what would have netted them enough to pay for the knowledge and tools necessary to develop to First World status, especially if land is off the table. One of the
    big pulls for non-Maori settlers in NZ was the availability of affordable land, which they could purchase on a real estate basis. I don’t know that they would haved move here in such numbers to become tenant farmers, given that is what many were back home. But then again, how many would you actually need to entice in to get the development you wanted – assuming that keeping up with the Europeans was actually a priority for Maori in the first place. It might not have been.
    
    It’s a bit like speculating on what the middle East would be like if Israel had not been created – we can never really know.

There’s been a lot of controversy over school lunches this week, much of it focused on the waste of meals that kids refuse to eat. Here’s something I tweeted last night:

My mate is a baker by trade, and loves cooking. An opportunity arose for him to do school lunches at a low-decile primary school here in Whanganui. Part of his success as a baker was knowing what people liked, and his lunches are going down a treat.

The menu is approved by the Ministry of Education, and the food is prepared and cooked onsite, in a commercial grade kitchen. The students love the hot, wholesome meals, many are trying different vegetables for the first time, and although they may not enjoy them, they eat them. There is very little food waste. For the younger pupils, he prepares smaller portions, like a chicken leg, with vegetables.

We shouldn’t have to be feeding children like this, but at the end of the day, it’s not the kids’ fault if the parents either send them to school hungry, or with crap food. My mate firmly believes these kids have a better chance of learning and ultimately succeeding if their bellies are full of nutritious food.

  That’s all very well and good.
  But, being a social engineering government (fast tracking to communist) they have to push it just that bit further.
  Other little kids whose parents provide them with a lunch from home must be re-programmed because they are “privileged”.
  So they are not allowed to eat their food before children who are being fed by the government.
  There is no justification for this demand – especially coming as it is from a government department which control schools and teachers.
  This is unacceptable state control.

    Another issue is it seems it’s a whole school thing.
    
    Once the school opts into the scheme then you must have your children fed by the state . You can’t have your kids eating their own lunches.
    
    How Big State is that ?
    
    And again it’s because of the small failing tail pulling every one else down.
    
    NCEA the same.
    
    Anti smacking too . The excuse was a few dead beats killed their kids , so no one is allowed to disciple theirs …….until of course they end up in front of the courts , where again the state will punish them.

      I look forward to the day when Ms Ardern’s child is told by the teacher that she may not eat her lunch before the children being fed by the government.
      That,,even if she is hungry, it will be good for her to have to wait.
      On the other hand, perhaps Ms Ardern will be quite happy for her daughter to be fed by the state – setting an example of socialist kindness and anti white privilege and all that.

      Why can’t it be an option?
      If parents want their kids to be fed by the state – fair enough. Sign them up to receive the free food at school.
      If other parents would rather provide the food, opt out of the state scheme.
      But do not penalise children (as is being pushed by the government) either way.
      Kids who bring their own, home- prepared food to school should not be made to wait until others have eaten first.
      That is discrimination.

        I’m not in favour of school subsidised lunches.
        However putting that aside and taking your comment at face value:

        Those that actually need the food, are from homes where the parent’s can’t organise anything in advance. Whether that be making the lunch the night before, or getting out of bed to make it before kids go to school, or forgoing cigs, alcohol etc in the weekly budget or shop to ensure their offspring have adequate food to not go hungry.
        
        And in any case, based on recent truancy stats, these children will be the same children that have less then a 70% chance of actually turning up to school on any given day.

      No , but if children are going hungry then that’s surely as much a child abuse as a smack administered for discipline purposes .
      
      All schools will know which kids are going hungry .
      
      Get a social worker involved . Get one of those myriad of Trusts that have been established 0ver the last 20 years , on the back of tax payer transfers, get the marae involved , get the local tribe involved .The church or any number of other agencies that’s there to assist in the first instance.
      This is actually about education , budgeting etc
      
      The last option should be the state feeding children , when taxpayer handouts are so freely available to people in “want”.

To my mind if children come to school regularly without lunch a social worker should be knocking at the door to see why, support better choices, or where not readily possible free school lunches for sure. Same as there is a knock on the door if children arrive at school with bruises or unkempt. To check, could be all good but check.
      
      Meantime, schools clearly have a pretty good idea how many free lunches are needed each day. Double it just in case and place the order.
      
      All those wasted lunches would pay for a part time social worker assigned to the school.
      
      It’s called targeting the need. Not scattergun.
      
      This whole school lunch thing will have many many eyerolls in households around the country from people who think – Really? why? just why?

        About 11 years ago I used to take remedial reading sessions at a decile 1 primary school. It was an eye-opener.
        Children were given breakfast – toast and milk were in most demand. Some of these children had never had a glass of milk, or a slice of toast with jam or honey. Imagine an 8 year old who has never tasted an orange, or a banana, and has to be told that they taste good – try it!
        The kids paid 20c for their lunches, which they ordered before school started and which was prepared by members of the local iwi. Some kids couldn’t even bring 20c. Lunch might be a hamburger bun with a mince pattie or soup, and a piece of fruit. The local supermarket provided bread and fruit, and local residents vegetables in season, and mince made from their hunting hauls. I talked to the cooks, and gave them $5/week for 5 of my scrawny little kids who they said were most in need. It was little enough to do. What I really wanted to do was take them home and feed them and put them in a warm bed, and send them to school in their own clothes, and . . . . . .
        One of these children told me that their video game player ‘got wet’ in the rain, and didn’t work any more, so at the weekend they went to town and bought a new one. Money for this, but not for food and warm clothes.
        I don’t think anything has changed much.

        Kids quite frequently engineer situations where they go to school even without breakfast. Sometimes they sleep in a bit and hurry to get out the door to get there in time. They are putting attendance first. The schools compound the problem by not letting them go out at break to buy food.

        Now you’re talking! Unfortunately Bill English’s social investment approach was completely rejected by the current government, who believe that lashings of money is the solution to every problem.
        
        I know from talking to my mate and his wife, who is a primary school principal, that there are many children at the school with significant and complex social problems. I certainly don’t begrudge the children a decent feed, and they shouldn’t be punished for their parents’ issues.

  The whole region was largely Christian , under the Byzantine Romans until the Muslim conquest in mid 600’s .
  
  Final outcome of the region pretty much decided at Manzekirt 1071 , but that was a Turkish Muslim victory.

  Back to the beginning of the Roman calendar when Palestine was ruled by the Eastern Roman Army. The population was then mainly Jewish. Christ was about to be born and by the seventh century when the Arabian muslims invaded it was a Jewish/Christian mix but the Romans lost the batttle against the muslims and rhen they swarmed thro’ the M.E. Islam would have completely subsumed this area by the time Saladin came along altho’ Christians had been allowed to visit their Holy sites in Jerusalem. But the tangata whenua of Palestine in the first century was Jewish who had lived there for hundreds of centuries after escaping Egypt. Before that – who knows.
  
  Muslims claim Palestine because Islamic doctrines state that any country once conquered by Islam must always stay Islamic. Egypt was also Coptic Christian up until the seventh century when Islam also conquered them and Mesopotamia (now Iraq).

  She (and Wiley E Coyote) have been doing the same. Saying that anyone with a dissenting view on the Covid-19 vaccines, or even urging caution and the right to informed choice are right wing extremists.
  
  Wiley goes one step further and offers indignation that many of the dissenting views are from people who appear to to doctors, or who actually are doctors! Who would have thought that doctors would know anything about vaccines, or that they may have a different viewpoint from the media narrative after having done research.

In all the media feeding frenzy on school lunches I am yet to see any precise explanation as to why children are rejecting them – plastic wrapping, not “fast food” enough in content, or too green and healthy, or perceived “not cool” to have lunch provided by school?

  I went to a school in Thailand where lunch was provided. Each day a different class prepared the food from scratch and even had input into the menu.
  
  This achieved a couple of things that are obviously lacking here in NZ.
  
  Firstly, the kids were fed and got to make a choice about what they ate and secondly, they were taught to cook.
  
  We ate the food with them and it was as good as any roadside stall.
  
  And before the naysayers leap in, the food was prepared in a very basic kitchen, something that used to exist in almost every school in NZ.

  Just provide the meal for those that need it and want it.

  Look, here’s how it works. The kids all eat their state-provided lunches together so that none need feel under-privileged next to their peers.
  
  The precedent for this has already been set with school uniforms.
  
  After lunch the teacher then tells them that, yes actually, some of you are under-privileged. But NOT because your parents can’t be assed slapping some Marmite between two slices of bread for you.
  
  Spoken as someone that lived on Marmite and bread from the ages of 7 – 12, and yet grew up reasonably healthy. 🙂

Epecially these days where the kids are ‘helicoptered’ much more. I believe it’s a massive overreaction. Kids of old and nowawdays are often blase about their lunch food for a host of reasons that aren’t hunger-related.

The NZ media yesterday collectively reported that Kingston Tapiki a “violent schizophrenic” who left nz as a baby is being deported to nz. Stuff says “His parents, twin brother and two sisters live in Australia. He has no family connections in New Zealand.”
On the Taranaki community page in 2011 “Kia ora from Australia! I’am an 18 year old boy who was born in Taranaki, This is my favourite song that I have created as of yet! Please have a listen and visit my Youtube Channel, Thanks whanau ” “A song about my culture my tribe my ancestors, my family and my beliefs by Kingston Tapiki” And it links to a song and video rich with Maori imagery and historical photos.

It seems sad that such a talented young person has gone off the rails. But where are his iwi and why aren’t they putting their hand up here. And once again pretty misleading reporting from our mainstream media.

      If Australia closes its open “back door” from New Zealand, it would have fewer problems with New Zealand-born who haven’t negotiated Australian residency status or citizenship.
      
      That’s the rough choice NZ faces.
      
      In the meantime, sending vulnerable people like the schizophrenic to a country where they often have little or no family or support is often brutal.
      
      It’s comparable in terms of individual suffering to the internal expulsions by Stalin within the Soviet Union (which sprawled across 11 time zones).
      
      Comparable, too, to the brutal 19th century life-exile to Australia of 160,000 criminals (often minor criminals, and sometimes just political dissidents).

        It’s not just New Zealand citizens being deported and according to recent figures there are over 500,000 New Zealand citizens living in Australia.
        
        Considering we have 5,000,000 citizens here and 9,000 in prison (thanks andy), you would expect approx 900 incacerated in Oz eligible for a “return home” at some stage.

    I agree lifesgood that this seems harsh.
    
    What’s not ever talked about, to my knowledge, is what are the long term numbers about non-Aussie crime levels.
    
    Are non-Aussies pulling up their socks? Is word getting around families and communities that people’s continued residence in Oz is now at real risk, if they commit crime, and so many are choosing to keep their noses clean in response?
    
    I don’t know the answer to this – but I’m damn sure that I’d be banging on to my kids and whanau to keep out of trouble if I was over there (I would anyway, but I’m sure you get my idea).
    
    Equally, if I was a parent of this bloke, I would seriously consider bringing the whole family back to support the guy given his problems. Particularly as I’d feel responsible for his plight in that from arriving in Oz until now I’ve failed to get his citizenship sorted – so it was my inaction that has contributed to his plight.

Ardern demands ethical algorithms and scores lots of nodding heads in her fanbase.

To the great unwashed this must sound like a good thing – but that’s only because they understand bugger all about algorithms.

Algorithms are tools. There is nothing ethical about them just like there is no such thing as an ethical screwdriver. Yes, you can use the screwdriver to fix granny’s washing machine or stab someone to death, but the screwdriver itself has no moral component.

The only thing that makes something “ethical” or not is how something is used.

“Machine learning”-style algorithms are trained and what they do depends on their training data – not the algorithms.

She then uses a Christchurch incident as an example of online radicalisation which she blames on algorithms. I might be incorrect – but I don’t believe Tarrant was a product of online radicalisation. He really was a lone wolf especially when compared to the terrorist products of NZ.

  You are so right. Algorithms are a tool and therefore have no ethical bias. However if you create algorithms to filter out certain types of information and prevent free speech, then that would be unethical.
  
  What she is really saying is that more control of free speech is required. Since Google, Facebook, and big tech already censoring and filtering online content, this is a direct call to ramp up that censorship.

The people that want guns will get them.
It will be interesting to see her move on the unnamed knife attacker, is she going to ban knives or give shoppers capsicum spray?

    It is also widely available in USA.

Look at the article – not just the headline, the article.

She did not call for “ethical algorithms”. That is the reporter’s phrase, not hers. What she actually called for was “the ethical use of algorithms”, which is entirely consistent with your own comment that what makes something “ethical” or not is how something used.

She does not, in any of the direct quotes given in the article, “use a Christchurch incident as an example of online radicalisation which she blames on algorithms”. She says that there has been significant change in many platforms, including their use of algorithms, since that incident.

Well, there has, hasn’t there? And that has raised serious and significant issues about what should be controlled, and how, and who gets to control it, hasn’t it?

She calls for a conversation about this. And we’re opposed to that? Do we think there shouldn’t be a conversation about whether it’s ok for people to be free to live-stream themselves committing murder, or rape, or child abuse, or providing advice to others on how to do so, how to make and administer an undetectable poison, how to perform a home abortion, make a bomb, carry out FGM? Do we think there shouldn’t be a conversation about who gets to control what can be put and viewed on the internet, and how?

One of the more important points he makes is that, immunity against viruses — as opposed to bacteria — actually does not depend on antibodies. And the vaccine is supposed to make the body produce antibodies. With a virus, it is T-cell immunity that is more important than antibodies.

“Viruses are really tiny, and their business is to get as quickly as they can inside your cells. So, they bind to a receptor on the surface and inject themselves into your cell. So, they’re inside. Antibodies are big molecules and they’re generally outside your cells.

So just think about that for a moment. Antibodies and viruses are in separate compartments. The virus is inside the cell, the antibodies outside the cell. I’m not saying antibodies have no role, but they’re really not very important.

I like to think that after years on the internet I have a very good bullshit meter and can spot a conspiracist, etc. This guy has a ring of truth in what he is saying.

    To clarify, cell membranes are not smooth, there’s all sorts of proteins and sugars sticking out of them. When cells get infected by a pathogen, they send out proteins from their cell membranes like flag poles. The antibodies recognize the pole, and attach to it – acting as a distress flag. This allows many types of cells (natural killer, macrophage, phagocytes) to see the distress signal, they target the signal. Inside of the NK/macrophages etc the pH is very low and there are lots of degradation enzymes. These NK etc cells engulf the body cell with the distress signal and chop it up, then they float to the lymph system, and drop their payload for excretion.

My fundamental objection to the FPAs is that they are a corrupt practice. Political Party A says to Group B “if you vote for us we will, upon entering government, use the powers of the state to force and coerce Group C to give you and your members more money against their will…”

In addition, this will likely swell the numbers of Group B members, returning even more votes to Party A.

A beautiful and virtuous circle according to Party A and Group B – less so for Group C who might even more likely see this as damaging to their business and livelihoods and will imperil the jobs and futures of all employees of their business.

The FPAs are a successful attempt at a protectionist racket – engineered with the full and gleeful support of NZ Labour Party.

Campus security guards are told not to ask a black member of staff if they are lost because this carries “assumptions of criminality”.

Lets make it clear Labour in NZ no longer stands for the working class person anymore.

Its the same trend with the Labour parties in the UK and Aust — big business and the elite are their biggest supporters.

The people in the UK and Aust have turned away in their droves from Labour — the average working class person no longer believes they are acting in their best interests.

The only reason Jacinda and Labour won the 2020 elections easily was because of covid — NZ being isolated by water at the bottom of the world made it easier for Labour to sell to the NZ public they were doing a great job keeping covid out of the country.

The problems of child poverty and shortage of housing our PM keeps peddling to the public could have been rectified in 2018-19 by Labour before covid but as we know they had no intention of solving those problems back then or even now.

Why? Because Labour does not stand for the average working or even middles class people anymore but the elites.

Another outstanding speech from Judith Collins this afternoon, to the Mainland National Party regional conference. This bit stands out (emphasis is mine):

The document also recommends we recast the legal status of waters, resources and indigenous species. Nanaia Mahuta, in her role as Minister for Local Government, is also undertaking a review of the three waters. This is our drinking water, waste water and storm water.

Currently, the infrastructure for these is owned and operated by local councils – owned by everyone. But last Monday, the Department of Internal Affairs presented the Government’s Three Waters proposal to the South Island’s 23 mayors and South Island iwi.

Some of the mayors were so appalled at what was presented, they have reached out to me.

I understand others have expressed their dissatisfaction directly to the Minister.

The proposal, presented by the Government, would see all water infrastructure in the South Island consolidated into one organisation. This means councils that have invested in pipes, wastewater and drinking water facilities would see their assets gone. Some council debt will also be transferred to the new organisation.

We understand that four mega-agencies, similar to Auckland’s Watercare, would be set up across New Zealand – one for the Upper North Island, one for the Central North Island, one for Lower North Island, and one for the Mainland.

But that is just the half of it. A document outlining this proposal, which I have acquired, proposes that the new Mainland water agency will be 50 percent owned by Ngāi Tahu.

Let me say that again. A document given to the South Island’s mayors last week by the Government’s Department of Internal Affairs proposes that all the drinking water, waste water, and storm water infrastructure across the South Island should be merged into a single organisation, and that this organisation should be co-owned by iwi.

Now, many people will say that Ngāi Tahu are a top-class organisation. They have proven this over many years. But this is beside the point. Water assets are publically-owned. Ngāi Tahu is not a publically-owned organisation, and Labour’s proposal is not based on Ngāi Tahu being the best organisation to manage the asset.

Labour’s proposal is yet another example of a radical interpretation of the Treaty that is leading New Zealand’s government towards a fifty-fifty ownership with iwi. A deal done behind closed doors with no say from local residents.

I say these changes can’t be rushed through. The Prime Minister needs to pause all of this work and explain to New Zealanders why she views the Treaty this way. She needs to explain how wide this reform will go. Which areas are next? Where it will lead?

The last paragraph quoted above is especially important. The PM has been very evasive when questioned in the House about the issues Collins has raised in recent weeks. She clearly doesn’t want to talk about He Puapua, and some of the reported decisions or proposals.

Collins has again thrown down the gauntlet to Ardern. Later in her speech she says The Prime Minister must have the courage to debate this with all New Zealanders. followed by a reminder that the government must be here for ALL New Zealanders.

You haven’t forgotten that we’re supposed to be a “team of five million” have Jacinda? It’s time to talk about this.

  Most NZers have not seen the writing on the wall… but the push is on to place significant control of all the Nation’s freshwater into the hands of either local iwi or a national authority representing iwi.

    Like the new MP for Invercargill, Penny Simmonds.
    
    In her maiden speech, Simmonds included this:
    
    Ngai Tahu’s Murihiku regenerative project provides the opportunity for a partnership to drive our future from the South. As Ta [Sir] Tipene O’Regan said recently, “we are facing a once-in-many-generations opportunity to reset the way we manage energy”.
    
    Simmonds rounded off her maiden speech thus:
    
    “In concluding, I will chant a waiata written for me by the late Koro Riki Cherrington. It refers to the people and rivers of the South and the pathway of the whales.   This government is determined to drive us back to a mid 1900’s existence. Just remember Norm is the PM’s historical labour idol.
  Independent of Ngai Tahu ownership issues, we will shortly have to install our own water supplies and waste water options ( long drop or septic tank) because this solution will fail.
  We only need to look at what has happened through the now decades old Local Body amalgamation process in large rural areas with smaller communities where small local bodies were once debt free and the communities had fully operating reticulation systems all year round.

      Tau called Collins’s statement deceptive and wrong.
      
      Tau is director of, and a lecturer at, the Ngai Tahu Research Centre at the University of Canterbury.
      
      Why should a Maori tribe control the South Island’s water jointly with the Government? This is a bag flax kit of racial nails.
      
      Ngai Tahu has shown (at least) interest in irrigation schemes, farming, property, and vineyards. All relate to water use.
      
      The Herald’s “deputy political editor”, Derek Cheng, says of the Collins statement: “Ngai Tahu is rubbishing National Party leader Judith Collins’ claim that the iwi wants to co-own the South Island’s water infrastructure assets.”
      
      No, it just wants to (jointly) control the water.
      
      Labour is getting value for taxpayer-supplied money from the State Media Conglomerate (State TV, State Radio, and the subsidised remnants of the print media).
