Should our Gay Finance Minister and Labour Party Deputy Prime Minister be the one to be making decisions on Transgender people playing Sport with his comments this week on everyone should have the right to play sport.
When you have a collection of Olympians and to sports people sending their view against it to the Government it shows that the majority don’t want it and it gives transgender sports people a advantage over those that work hard to succeed.

It is beginning and becoming a joke when Politicians can rule New Zealand with their views and taxpayers money to satisfy their own whims while ordinary people have to listen and work harder at what they do to succeed.

  I dont think being gay is that relevant. Whats more important is that it is people who understand sports. This decision isn’t about being fair to transgender people who want to play sport its about being fair to everyone who plays the sport. Having someone with a male body playing against women is just unfair. We could have a situation where someone who is a man ranked 200 in mens tennis, changes genders and becomes world champion as a woman. No one can think that is right.

      It’s already happened. There is an MMA fighter who is trans, Fallon Fox.
      
      “Everything happened in the first round within the first two and a half minutes. It was a messy, bloody fight and not easy for everyone to watch. During the fight Tamikka suffered a concussion and fractured her orbital bone in her skull and Fallon Fox didn’t stop until Tamikka Brents was finally TKO’d. After the fight she received several staples in her head and skull.
      
      After the fight, Tamikka Brents gave an interview where she went on to say she had never felt so much power and strength in any woman before she fought Fallon Fox.
      
      I have struggled with many women and I have never felt the strength I felt in a fight like that night. I can’t answer whether it’s because she was born a man or not because I’m not a doctor. I can only say that I have never felt so dominated in my life and that I am an abnormally strong woman in my own right? I still disagree with Fox’s struggle.   I struggle to answer that as I have a strong belief that people from all walks of life should be included in having input into the decision making process.
  
  There are a few parts to unpack as to whether Grant is the right person
  – As a non-professional sports participant there would be no reason for him to be included as this issue is really looking at the impact on professional sports
  – As Minister for Sport he absolutely should be involved. He is the voice of the Government in regards to sport in NZ, which (whether we like it or not) makes him the peoples elected voice on this topic.
  – As a gay man he is closer to the issues facing the LGBT+ (I can’t remember how many acronyms we’re up to now), but he is not transgender, so on the balance I would say no benefit.
  An overall score of 1 out of 3, but the 1 he does score is an important one and again of the balance he should be involved.
  
  This appears to be another well meaning working group, but with guiding principles that have an end outcome already in mind. Indeed one of the items that I can’t see anywhere in this is fairness . And looking at the groups involved in the consultation process, again it appears that who should be involved was decided from what they desired outcome was. I do note that there is wording to the scope of the policy and at what level community ends, which gives me hope. But like the climate commissions report, this appears to be another that will be held close and then rushed through so that the public and those not invited into the tent will not be able to have a say.

While it is true that in terms of coronavirus disease, Australia and New Zealand are high-risk populations – due to very high rates of obesity and metabolic disease – the economic and societal costs of lockdowns and isolation have also been substantial. In fact, if one considers both GDP loss and new public debt, New Zealand is one of the worst affected countries in the world.

While [too many] NZers live under the illusion that Ardern’s prison-fortress mentality has saaaaaaaaved us, the reality is that it has wrecked our children’s futures.

  To me fair:
  Obesity is reversible but the longer it is left unchecked the worse the impact. Once diabetes kicks in its a lot harder to fix the damage.
  
  Of course it doesn’t save lives – it just time shifts the deaths for a bit. Most people that die of (or even with) CV19 are very old with preexisting conditions and were going to die within 2 years anyway. Thus, of the people that are “saved”, most will be dead by the end of the year anyway.

    New Zealand’s case fatality rate is over 1%, are you claiming that we’ve had 7 – 10 times as many community infection as recorded? That seems unlikely given that targeted testing and wider testing have shown such low positive test rates.

        We’ve been over this before. An average IFR across all ages isn’t very interesting. It’s almost zero under 40 and then rises pretty much exponentially as you approach 90+.
        
        We have effectively saddled generations with unprecedented debt to keep a few unwell geriatrics going for another year or two. Some younger people would have died too, but very similar numbers to a bad flu year.

All those in power are either idiots (aren’t as smart as they) or are in on the conspiracy. The fact that many countries have lost more than 1500 per million of their entire population doesn’t register. No one believed them when they said that we couldn’t eliminate, that a vaccine wasn’t possible, that lockdowns don’t work, it’s all a hoax, Bill Gates or China have planned it all, the vaccine doesn’t work/ is only H2O, etc etc.

      WEstern IFR is probably a little higher than 0.15% (depends on population average age). More like 0.4% (Eg Iceland has CFR of ~0.45%), 3rd world averages much younger and fewer old people so much lower IFR.
      
      But if you add in prophylactic use of cheap/safe Ivermectin and vitamin D and zinc and hydroxychloroquine and a number of other drugs/vitamins https://c19early.com/ then you can probably drop western IFR by 80% to just 0.1% – same as a bad seasonal flu.
      
      And there is a very effective late-stage treatment in testing that might drop the IFR by another order of magnitude at which point vaccination becomes less compelling (until the safety issues have been sorted) https://www.timesofisrael.com/new-israeli-drug-cured-moderate-to-serious-covid-cases-within-days-hospital/

        I will agree with you that many Western countries are doing poorly – but then they have been for the last 40 years or so.
        
        USA has been having debt-fuelled “growth” since the 1980s.
        
        The USA has been incurring an average of over $1trillion a year (excluding extra stimulus spending in the CV19 era). To put it in context, that’s USD3k per year for each man, woman and child. Most of that ends up in consumer spending so cannot be labelled “investment”.
        
        UK: ditto, if not worse.
        
        NZ is only in the (relatively) healthy position it is now because of the economic crunch/belt tightening in the 1980s and early 1990s. Without the 1991 MOAB, NZ would still be in a massive hole and would not be in any position to have spent up like they have now.
        
        Robbo has now thrown that under the bus and the new mantra is spend, spend, spend.

  When the first major lockdown was in force last year, we were warned about the consequences in the health sector. Backlogs of surgeries, women who were going for months without mammograms – the Breast Foundation warned in May 2020 that 200 women would have found a lump during lockdown that they couldn’t get checked out – cancer diagnostics missed; the list goes on.
  
  I wonder if any research has been done to look at the OVERALL impact of the lockdowns on NZ?

      It depends…
      Canterbury DHB had been through a huge exercise of slashing their backlogs and had pretty much eliminated them before CV19.
      
      Then came CV19 and the hospitals were, effectively, shut down for everything other than emergencies.
      
      I happened to be admitted just before CV19 kicked in with a heart condition. I was sorted out and given an appointment for April for some check ups. CV19 kicked in and I only got my check up in August.
      
      The cardiologist was still mad about how they’d been put back and had not been allowed to continue serving their patients.

        I can’t speak for the Canterbury DHB’s performance or your personal experience, BUT
        1. Canterbury is not the only DHB and the govt. is responsible for all of them.
        2. The numbers across the board were getting worse (pre covid19) over the whole country.
        3.My and my wife’s experience, was very different to yours, pre covid19.
        4.During covid lock downs, community nursing visits (by DHB’s) were cancelled. Even to critical patients like my wife, who had Pulmonary Hypertension and chronic heart failure. The very conditions that covid would have killed her nearly a year before she actually died.
        5. Seasonal flu vaccine was NOT available in enough numbers before covid.
        6. Measles out break, due to a falling vaccination rate, caused by Labour’s failures.
        7.meningitis deaths due to This govt.’s negligence.

    Graham, N.Z. is almost unique in that we have a death deficit compared to expected. Most countries have excess deaths (the uk 136,000) caused by covid. Our death deficit is because the positive unintended consequences (less virus circulating, accidents etc) exceed the negative unintended consequences (delayed medical treatment, suicides etc)

    The figures have been collected but based on OIAs, analysis has not been done – I suspect so that the results of any analysis cannot be published, and therefore no conclusions can be publicly drawn.
    
    I believe we can be quite sure that if there was no evidence of any impact on health and survival, or only a minimal impact, the Vulturess of the Pestilence would be screeching it from her gargoyle-perch.
    
    Just one very worrying metric; practice-based reports on mental health (and the worst outcome, suicide) are rife with case reports exceeding the worst years ever for else-harm; while the MOH claims there has been ‘no recorded increase’. Note the weaselly wiggle-room the word ‘recorded’ provides them, for later denial when the truth come out.
    
    I know of 2 efforts currently underway to collect parallel statistics from ambulance and GP callouts which do not rely on MOH data – but will miss cases.

  What has been missing in our response is any sort of risk benefit analysis. Steps taken to “save lives” have a cost – both in direct dollars and in health outcomes from the shutdown’s effects. This analysis is the only way to make sensible decisions around roading, health etc. The PM is all about saving lives apparently. And yet $800m for a bridge to let the luvvies feel good about themselves as opposed to saving lives shows that she has no integrity t all.

    The core issue is that it seems to be up to the government to determine what is an “acceptable” level of risk and death rate, and they act accordingly, no matter what the consequence to individual liberty. It’s not for them to decide what level of risk I or others are able to willingly expose myself/themselves to.

    As major countries had more excess deaths than those attributed to Covid there were suggestions that the extra excess deaths were caused by the lockdowns. Once it became known that both Australia and New Zealand had a death deficit that became untenable. The extra deaths were in fact unattributed covid deaths.

  Pm and her spin doctors won’t be happy regarding Mike Hosking winning the most popular ‘Morning’ radio show. Like or loath him, one thing Hosking does is his homework on subjects and this was way too much for an inept PM that is as shallow as a carpark puddle.
  Similar to Robertson refusing to go on Magic Radio with Peter Williams; another presenter that does a great deal of research, and shows up the shallowness of these politicians, but is what is really needed right now.
  In the recent Andrea Vance article where she alluded to the PM’s department contacting the ‘Political Editors’ each Monday morning – If this is to set the political news agenda for the week (continual attacks on National over Nick Smith resignation & Goldsmiths comments), then we have descended into a very dangerous place and thankfully we still have the likes of Mike Hosking and Peter Williams to hold them to account.

We have not sanctioned a review of us and the Treaty and certainly not a return to allowing Maori full tikanga with killing rights as some wild things have requested. If you read what they’ve said and wrote you’ll see that they are offering a perfectly reasonable point of view which I think most people would agree with. Colonisation had faults but on balance Maori did better than would otherwise have been the case. Certainly it was going to happen under one regime or the other and the Church Missionary Society influenced British version vastly better that, for example, Germany.

I got a text this morning from NZ Post advising that I have an imminent delivery and asking where I would like the parcel to be left. I replied “leave at the back door” and got this information acknowledged back to me in a text reply. It all seemed very efficient.
I have had these before and they never follow instructions. The delivery guys always leave at the gate.
It just reminds me how dehumanised and impersonal the customers’ relationships with large organisations have become. Spark is the worst and insurance companies as well. Sometimes when I phone and get frustrated with the doom loop I press the number for sales rather than service. When you choose sales you usually get a human. Funny that.
I have to admit the best experience is when you phone Auckland council.

    Two months ago I left Vodafone for 2 Degrees.
    I’m still getting bills from Vodafone as if they think I’m still their customer. I suppose all they can do is cut me off. Thank God I’m not on direct debit.
    Yes, 2 Degrees is cheaper but the main reason I changed is because I got sick of waiting three days to get through on the phone then end up with some guy in India who had no idea what I was talking about.
    Vodafone is crap, but probably no worse than Spark.

  Rocky, if you have joined My Spark you can get almost immediate chat with a real person and the transcript is recorded. Much better in my opinion to a verbal stoush. As for insurance you can try a broker who will fight in your court, or look for a highly rated one like AA or FMG.

    MCos – trying to get in touch with Countdown over a delivery issue – it’s no longer possible. It’s all automated and extremely annoying. If stock was unavailable they used to phone you, now you just don’t get the item at all. Automated systems suck, bring back the people.

international on-line conference. Fun reading and decoding the jargon. They are discussing the cutting edge of physics as they have found energy which needs explanation. Not all science is settled. Transistors are taken for granted because they are useful but how do they work. There is largely shelved disagreement about that. Imagine try to explain a kerosene operated freezer. Science sometime puts us in the difficult position of not having an explanation that fits our current small minded boundaries.

  Sorry to burst your bubble but:
  * We understand how transistors work.
  * We understand how kero freezers work.
  
  The thing with science is that there are layers of understanding. We can understand a lot of the layers without understanding everything to the bottom.
  
  That means we can understand how (and why) something at a higher level works without understanding why the lower levels work.
  
  For example.
  We understand electricity is a flow of electrons.
  We understand that this is due to the electrons (negative charge) moving towards unmatched protons (positive charge) which create an electric field etc.
  We understand that negative goes towards positive because this is a lower energy state.
  We understand that as the electron moves to a lower energy state it releases energy.
  What we don’t know is why an electron is negative and why a proton is positive and why they interact. We know they DO interact the way they do and that is enough to understand all the higher levels.
  
  So if we just accept the properties of electrons and protons at the lowest level we can build a pretty solid amount of understanding.
  
  Note that it is valid to accept the properties of something without understanding how those properties come about.
  
  Unfortunately a whole lot of the “free energy” style bullshit is a scam that takes some unknown out of context and then draws some outlandish conclusion.
  
  For example, whenever you see people talking of quantum physics on a macro scale then you know you’re dealing with bullshit.

    For the benefit of non technical readers, I can expand on what you have said:
    
    All energy in the material universe comes from somewhere. I think that some people get caught up in the notion that “free energy” may mean not having to pay for it, and therefore not be reliant on power and oil companies. As opposed to energy released for use where there is an “over unity gain”.
    
    To some, “free energy” may imply an end to the power bill, to others it may mean an end to oil and gas exploration.
    
    “Costs” have multiple viewpoints – financial, energy expended to get the released energy, environmental damage that will have a greater cost in the long term etc.
    
    Even with over unity gain, there are costs. Infrastructure cost, transmission costs, maintenance cost etc
    
    Even if the energy could be beamed directly into the home or business, there would still be a receiver cost, conversion equipment cost, maintenance costs, and the list goes on.
    
    I remind myself of an article I read many years ago, where the writer pointed out that “free energy” is where man expends less energy to release a larger amount of energy.
    
    Nikola Tesla used to say that energy is abundant, and can be accessed by “hooking into the wheel-work of nature”.
    
    The humble waterwheel is a prime example of that, and the simplest form of that: Build a water wheel with a generator attached, at one time, and keep receiving generated power for years. Hydroelectricity is just an expanded and commercialised form of that.
    
    Back to that article I mention, the writer expressed the simplicity of hydroelectricity being a form of “free energy” i.e. where man releases output energy far greater than the input required. And that every time you switch on a light in your home, powered by hydroelectricity, you are in fact using the miracle of “free energy”. Hydroelectricity is a source of non expendable energy.
    
    I have no doubt that sometime in the near future someone will produce something that appears to be free energy, or over unity gain energy production. It will however be another form of hooking into the wheel-work of nature or universe energy.
    
    As much as as I would welcome Electric engines replacing Internal Combustion Engines, we are not there yet.
    
    However like most rational thinkers, I am unhappy at Cindy’s irrational banning of gas and oil exploration. Government interference in the market never produces positive outcomes. Innovation is driven by competition, not totalitarianism.
    
    Cindy is also pushing the idea of Electric cars, a concept in itself, that is not bad. But again this should be market driven, not Government driven. The demand for electricity increases as you switch from oil to electricity.
    
    However, what is disturbing, is the inescapable fact that if we wish to end reliance on oil, what better way to increase electricity production than to increase hydroelectricity, until some better “free energy” source is created, which may include nuclear power in the interim.
    
    Banning sources of energy that derive from oil, especially as oil is also a source of thousands of everyday compounds, is madness. Not wanting to use or even objectively investigate nuclear power is madness. All the while wanting to go electric and not be dependent in any way on oil.
    
    As the saying goes, it is “throwing out the baby with the bath water.”

      TBF on the nuclear one… It may well be that nuclear is an excellent energy source for many many countries, but one that NZ in particular should be extra cautious about given:
      A) the faultline running through the country.
      B) our reliance on tourism.
      
      This isn’t to say its a bad energy source, just that it may well not be the best energy source for us.

    In a similar line – what is gravity? We can measure it, know how to account for it’s effects, can make use of it’s properties, but what is it? It can’t be a flow of electrons as there is no physical connection between objects. Is it related to magnetism? Now there’s another theoretical field of study. What is the force that attracts or repels magnetic objects. Perhaps when scientists find out these fundamentals we may solve the perpetual energy conundrum.

        Science can’t tell us “why” either, it is an activity restricted to telling us “what.” No bodies of scientific propositions which give physical explanations of phenomena disprove the existence of God at all. In some sense (if there is a God) they are just cataloging and categorising in a systematic way exactly what it is that God has created. Accounting for gravity (i.e. objects with mass distorting/bending space-time) is just one example. None of it disproves God at all (but nor do I claim the inverse).

        A theory is a coherent system of integrated propositions with explanatory power, with respect to some fact(s) or phenomena. For instance, there is a theory explaining how you are able to post comments on Kiwiblog while sitting in your lounge. This theory accounts for a very real phenomenon though.

        Theory: “a set of principles on which the practice of an activity is based.”
        Also: “an idea used to account for a situation or justify a course of action.”
        
        Everything has a context. Unfortunately in this current woke, undemocratic, shallow society we live in, many things are classed as “theory ” that do not fit with the definition.
        
        As I have posted on this thread earlier about Nikola Tesla, his theory would accompany real products he had built and could demonstrate.
        
        Until the theory can be proven to work or follow some form of logic or rational reasoning, it is an idea.
        
        Discovery and experimentation, not “theoretical field of study” would be a better term. The reason I raised it in my post, is that is in the current political and govt funded scientific study climate, money is thrown around like dirty dish water at anything and almost everything that passes as a theory.
        
        Almost all of the political cluster*ucks and *uck ups, and bad decisions made by this current govt can be traced back to theories having no relation to reality. They are not principles which can be observed as true in reality. This includes everything from continuing Maori land settlements, race separatism, be kind, Shaun Hendy’s “80,000 will die”, Maori are failing because of colonsiation, climate change, etc
        
        Same goes for International climate change, and a plethora of scientific misuse of funds and resources world wide.
        
        The word theory is misused and overused by people who just want to push their pet ideas, but where the theory has no basis in reality.

      Nobody understands WHY gravity works, but we can still understand it enough to work with it.
      
      Cavemen understood gravity well enough to understand that they could pick up a heavy rock and drop it to smash something.
      A bit later on we had a bit more understanding as gravity was understood to be an acceleration and we could measure it to just below 10m/s/s.
      Then Kepler etc used gravity to explain orbital behaviour and how the universe works.
      But right at the bottom level we do not understand, and likely will never understand, why gravitational forces exist between masses.
      
      All theoretical research just peels another layer off the onion, but it probably will never get to the bottom because there is always another “why” below that.

        In layman’s terms, all bodies tend towards the centre of the Earth, because the Earth (or any object with mass) distorts the space-time it occupies. If a passing object gets pulled into a larger mass’s “gravitational field”, it is essentially “falling” towards it due to the curved space surrounding it.
        
        As a thought experiment, place a heavy bowling ball in the middle of, say, a trampoline, then roll a golf ball in the direction of the bowling ball – the golf ball will “fall” towards the bowling ball due to the latter’s distortion of the trampoline’s surface. If the golf ball has sufficient velocity and the bowling ball sufficiently distorts its surroundings, the golf ball will “orbit” the bowling ball.
        
        Objects in outer space for instance are in orbit because they are falling – the moon is falling around the Earth, and both are falling around the Sun, and our solar system is falling…. and so on. Their great velocity counteracts the falling, so that they don’t collide.

        Just talking about bending space does not really answer the question. It just adds another layer to the onion.
        
        You still have not answered: “Why does mass bend space?”
        
        Ultimately though we do not need to know why. We just need to understand it sufficiently well to use it.
        
        We are remarkably good at using, and understanding the effects of gravity, without having to understand why it works.
        
        For example we can calculate if a bridge will fall down. We can calculate the alignment of planets in 2000 years. We can figure out all sorts of things.
        
        But, back to my main point, these unknowns do not give the free energy crowd license to claim the nonsense that they do.

    Cmm, we know exactly why electrons are “negative” and protons are “positive”, and that is because that was the convention adopted when electricity was first being investigated by humans.
    
    It doesn’t actually matter which way round you adopt, and there is a (slightly wistful) school of thought that holds that it is a shame that the convention wasn’t reversed as it would simplify some statements in the maths.
    
    Charge itself is a fundamental quantum property that exists at the lowest possible level in the real world. A “particle” (and let’s ignore discussions at this point over what is a particle) is either type 1 (say negative), type 2 (positive), or type 3 which is neither or both, being neutral. It is purely by convention that electrons are labelled negative.

      I agree completely that positive and negative are just labels and, equally could be the other way around. Indeed, positive charge was thought to be the stuff that moves (hence positive), but now we know that it is really the electrons that move in wires – so the first electrical experimenters got that wrong.
      
      Indeed, electrical engineers still deal in terms of flow of positive charge which is wrong in terms of particle physics but is still fine because all that matters is having a convention and that charge does move.
      
      We do indeed know that some particles are charged and some are not.
      
      But we do not know WHY some particles are charged and some are not.
      
      We can break apart particles and talk about quarks or furballs or whatever and explain it with those, but all that leaves is another WHY. Why does this arrangement of quarks convey negative charge and another arrangement positive?
      
      There’s always another question…

    I’m sure it was only during the past year I have seen argument from physicists or associates saying that they did not how the actual material which make up transistors behaves–how the “holes”, if actually such, work. They have good understandings of the practicalities required for use but the theoretical models are just that.
    I read real weird stuff from a Polish physics researcher trying to explain LENR. He was endeavouring to show how the sub-atomic particles were essentially playing pass their micro energy parcels as they changed states in the sub-atomic interactions occurring. He was able to extrapolate it out as far as the Hamiltonians which mathematically gave the measure of energy output consistent with the test bench results.
    
    LENR, Low Energy Nuclear Reactions, formerly Cold Fusion has come a long way. After becoming unfashionable it has been rehabilitated formally by the US Govt in the last year or so and they have got patents accordingly. What it is though has puzzled many as excess energy has been observed and replicated often enough world wide. This has happened in the USA, Japan, China, Poland, Italy and … There are now kits and instructions available for amateurs.
    
    It may have started with radio valves. It is reported that back in the 30’s(?) the designers encountered EVO’s, Exotic Vacuum Objects, as they are now called. They are thought to be akin to microscopic ball lightning and possibly a condensed state of matter or plasma. Even “dark matter” has been suggested. We may not know much more clearly for another 50 years how these hidden processes work.
    
    In the past 10 years the presence of energy output exceeding input has been measured many times. That doesn’t mean a scam or anything peculiar but inquisitive academics trying to prove their fellow’s findings. What has commonly emerged is: hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst in a low voltage plasma with a pulsed electron flow though it or such like is producing excess heat and elements via a process of transmutation. Work now is at the refinement of details stage. There are several main parameters such as the voltage and character of the pulse. Different labs are pursuing their own approaches. The Japanese have a distinct one too as they have discovered that cavitation effects from shaking can produce some similar transmutations. They have made “enriched” water to feed plants that way.
    
    Where the energy comes from is moot. It was measured as heat and light and notably without radioactivity or dangerous radiation. Electricity being directly “harvested” from the plasma has only become available in the last year. Brilliant Light & Power have massive heat in a very high density unit and are currently aiming to develop a magnetohydrodynamic converter to capture 90+% as electricity. I would watch them for the future.
    
    They have developed their own Grand United Theory-Classical Physics to explain what they have produced. It also works for other chemical process modelling. Their explanation is that hydrogen, which they derive directly from water is modified by their setup and the state change to a “hydrino” gives the energy output. They have had tests on the hydrino and it has a distinct spectroscopic signature. Also it partakes in chemical reactions and they are offering free samples world wide to interested laboratories. Transparent enough?
    The direct collection of electricity from the plasma is also underway but taming electrons has proved tricky from a cell of only 110 cu cm producing 18.5Kw.
    
    I have been watching this technology for about 10 years when I first encountered a demonstration form a Greek lab. Now it’s at the pre-commercial stage. The flood of patents spoke of that interest and has encouraged others particularly the US Govt and Airbus.

  There seems to be something going on with low energy/lattice enhanced nuclear reactions (LENR) from minute traces of nuclear ‘ash’ produced, but the ‘science’ tends to be pathological with almost all results explainable by measurement errors and a lot of wishful thinking and outright scammers like Rossi and Mills touting bullshit. No clear replicable demonstrations of useful excess power yet – and if replications were possible then we would quickly hear about it in the world of real science/engineering. Worth being open minded to possibility, but strong skepticism is warranted after 35 years of all sizzle no steak.

    krazykiwi, for this amount of money ($0.685 Billion $0.100 Billion cycle-way extension), combined with the $0.926 Billion in Grant Robertson’s implementation fund, NZ would have more than the $1.5 Billion required to link the about to be unused Manapouri generators to the electricity distribution grid at Benmore.
    
    This would be a win win situation.
    Not having energy shortages help the team of 5 million 24/7 as opposed to the few hundred that will use the Lycra bridge to get to and from work twice a day, 7 days a week. Casual use of the Lycra bridge is a luxury, not a necessity.
    
    It would also help provide the electricity to power Jacinda’s dream of more electric cars. It would also relieve the need for the white elephant energy losing “perpetual motion machine” called pumped hydro.

      I don’t know why provision wasn’t made for bikes/pedestrians when the bridge was first built.

        When the bridge opened in 1959 Auckland looked a lot different to what is is today.
        The North Shore was still a place of seaside suburbs, Glenfield was embryonic, Albany was rural with an old pub, you got to Auckland from the north via the ferry(s) or by road at Riverhead.
        As far as cycling was concerned, only kids biked !
        Nobody thought about walking to and from the city.
        I was 11 years old in 1959 , lived in Whangarei and remember these things quite well: we had several rellies in Glenfield, on the Wairau flats and in Browns Bay.

India has ~60,000 people die every day, they have 18% of the world’s population and in 2019 has 32% of the world’s respiratory deaths. So there have always been lots of deaths in India, long before the fear-porn cameras showed up.

All sorts are commentating in response (eg both supporters and detractors of Waititi) but I find most interesting, apart from Waititi’s spelling mistakes, is that Waitit’s various comments are being called out by more knowledgeable people, some of them centrist Māori by the looks, as being factually incorrect!

You couldn’t make this up! So it begs the question, what is wrong with the MSM reporters who never challenge Waititi’s (often bizarre) and nonsensical statements (like the other day, when he packed a tantrum over the Police Commissioner rescheduling his meeting with Waititi and his co-leader, spouting nonsense which was explained by the Police)?

Meethinks MSM jounrnalists may actually be lacking in balanced historical knowledge and either rely on the activist narrative or are too scared to challenge it. If that latter, they are actually doing themselves a disservice and perhaps are in the wrong profession, if they cannot or are too scared to hold the powerful to account!

    BTW Assault rifles weren’t banned as such.
    Incredibly, ownership of military style full-automatics has been unchanged. (I am glad about this, and they are historically important items) And even semi-auto/full automatics like AK47 can still be bought on the market.
    
    What was affected was purely semi-automatics, which become prohibited and unable to be owned without a P endorsement to firearms licence.
    So you can still buy a belt fed MG42 or a Bren gun or Browning Assault rifle – but you can’t buy a .22 semi auto for bunnies.
    Other rules came into play around pump action and magazined firearms.
    Interesting to note that pistols are unaffected, but ‘machine guns’ and pistols were already available only to endorsed licence holders.
    Is NZ safer? Not really.
    
    Jacinda was part of the panel which made it easier to get a firearms licence via purely on-line means, and aided Tarrant in that sense.
    The other bit of lunacy which sits purely with police and government is you could buy a legal semi-auto and them buy a military style high capacity magazine (without the military style endorsement) and then put the 2 together.
    Yet the key failing which led to mass murder was with police however who failed (incredibly) to even interview the character witnesses, who were not even eligible by the terms of the application.
    Not sure the movie will cover off this though. Pesky facts and details won’t compare to hugz.

        It certainly is dangerous. It is a kissing cousin to one of the sucessful assualt rifles used by the world’s miltiaries.
        The main issue in NZ was the ammunition capacity, and wedding to high capacity magazines. The size of the round is arguably an underpowered one (for a battlefield at least) but with a ‘bump stock’ it was used in the USA to mass-kill – 61 killed in Las Vegas in 2017.
        Also used in the Port Arthur massacre.
        So I don’t mind terribly that the AR15 is up for scrutiny as such, but not happy that the Police came of scot free for the mosque massacre.
        Guns dont kill people – guns given to dodgy characters by an inept adminstration of fully adequate gun laws by NZ police kill people.
        Doesn’t quite roll of the tongue that same though.

If we are burning more coal than ever before to produce current electricity demands how much coal will we need to burn to run a fleet of EV vehicles? Kind of counter productive. Maybe the Govt could reverse the ban on gas exploration to produce cleaner electricity than burning coal and also allow more coal mining here so we are not burning fossil fuel shipping coal from Indonesia and the added bonus of employing New Zealanders.

  2.when the pilots started visiting the ~~whore~~ tea houses, other folks wouldn’t own up to frequenting the same facilities
  Professor Chen Chien-jen, an epidemiologist and former vice-president of Taiwan, says the fact that many who tested positive were unwilling to declare they had visited such adult entertainment venues made contact tracing even more difficult.

I see that TVNZ has an article up on Matariki, which is “not just unique to Maori”. I wonder why they never mention that its true astronomical name is the Pleiades cluster, or Seven Sisters. Named by the ancient Greeks.

“We’ll see Matariki rising in probably about a week’s time and slowly start to become more visible as it gets higher and higher away from the sun.”

Matariki provided a guiding light for cultures across the Pacific, not just in Aotearoa.

    I respectfully suggest you’re allowing your own bias to colour what Fletch has written. Rather than attempting to “devalue Maori culture”, I think the point is that if you read the linked article you would actually have no idea what the rest of the world refer to this star cluster as.
    
    I know that it’s currently all very trendy in New Zealand to refer to things by Maori names and delve deeply into Maori myths and legends – and that’s fine – but we can’t go down the path that some seem to be wanting of excluding outside influences. The reality is that we are a tiny little country of very little importance to the rest of the world. Sorry to bring reality into this, but if we want to get on in the world we have to deal with the world on their terms; and if you’re talking to anybody overseas about “Matariki” they’re simply not going to know what on earth you’re going on about. Whereas if the article had mentioned “”Matariki (also known as the Pleiades cluster)” that would at least provide some context.
    
    In fact, far from devaluing Maori culture, it would bring MORE value to Maori culture, by enabling people to relate Matariki to what the rest of the world is talking about. Imagine being able to have a conversation with someone in America who is talking about the Seven Sisters, and say, “Did you know that here in New Zealand we call it Matariki?”

    It could be taken at face value as an observation that many cultures (not just Pacific) knew the cluster.
    And taking it another way, perhaps even more valid than the inference taken here as a devaluation of Maori, is that the linked story is another talking up or continued fixation upon Maori and Pacifica cultures; and so then might be devaluing by omission all those other ‘non-brown’ cultures which don’t get a mention here?
    It just depends who wants to take offense for, and on behalf of whom.
    That is entirely in the eye of the beholder.

  Messier 45 has a Northern declination of +24 degrees, so is more of a Northern Hemisphere object than Southern. Probably Maori retained interest as it was important to their ancestors.   What did strike me as a bit odd was this sentence: ‘…whereas for Māori we wait for the triangulation of sun, plus star, plus moon.” These are three separate celestial phenomena arbitrarily yoked together, something I associate with astrology rather than astronomy.
  
  His point, that the choice of start for the new year is contestable, is quite reasonable, and he gives reasons which made sense for ancient, agrarian societies. However, given the choice between a local starting date in the middle of winter, or conforming with the rest of the world, which gives me a decent summer break, I’ll go with the rest of the world.

    They used a lunar calendar, which will drift against the seasons, the heliacal rising of either Matariki or Puanga is used to resync the lunar calendar with the seasons. The old Julian calendar also drifts against the seasons at a slower rate but Western Christian clergy noticed the drift and were concerned it would eventually put Easter into the wrong season. Pope Gregory XIII commissioned Jesuit Astronomers to come up with a solution and hence the Gregorian calendar came about. The Eastern Christians rejected this new papist calendar and still use the Julian calendar. Russia only adopted the Gregorian calendar after the commie revolution.

Just watched a Newshub story on NZ using as much coal in the first three months of this year as we did in 2016/17 combined. And yet there was no correlation between the governments oil and gas ban and our 25% increase in coal imports!!! How bloody idiotic can you get. In late September 1780, the Overmountain Men—the frontier militia that crossed the Appalachian Mountains and defeated an army of British loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain—mustered at Sycamore Shoals, and included 240 Wataugans under the command of Cols. John Sevier and Isaac Shelby.

They are often considered the earliest documented serial killers in the United States history. Loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, the Harpes became outlaws after the war and began robbing and killing settlers in the remote frontier west of the Appalachian Mountains.
