    Rural Women do a wonderful job, and not just in their homes and on their farms. Federated Farmers recently had a female President in Katie Milne, a number of rural electorates have women MP’s, and you have people like Ele Ludemann from Homepaddock who are absolute pillars of their communities. Interesting to ”read the room” regarding Jacindastan and the ongoing response to Covid.

Its almost like media announcements, influencers “testing the waters””

Many options thrashing those who have made the decision not to get jabbed.
ie the avalanche of bitterness regarding Sandra Goudies decision to wait for availability of another vaccine.
I actually support those who are exercising their freedom of choice re the vax.
They are no threat to me.(
My basic principles in life are freedom of speech and freedom of choice-no buts allowed!

Similarly Bish Tamaki’s outdoor meeting that was held in the Domain with a slight wind-excellent ventilation .
Dumped on by most commentators feeding the fear and using the not following the rules schtick. So how many of the new cases came from the meeting in the park. (Remember it was 14 days ago tomorrow) My guess is none, otherwise it would be all over the media.

Then we have Government modelers warning of 5,000 cases a week, lovely fear porn.
While Ministers talk up the DHBs capacity to handle the increased load and talk of home isolation and saying we expect more cases but don’t worry its OK.

So, my reading of the room.
A political decision will be made shortly to redefine Level “”whatever”” meanings.
Talk about different levels of vax being triggers for who knows what
Allowing themselves an out from the previous rhetoric of stamping it out.
Some strategy to reduce the fear porn while making Jacinda look good.

      The problem is not Maori, and it’s not the unvaxxed. It’s a disease. And even highly vaxxed countries like Israel, Singapore and the UK are struggling to contain it. Maori where I live are running the vax centre and are doing a damn good job. Young people aren’t at much risk, and are not recommended by the UK JCVI to get a jab because of the risk of myocarditis and the unknowns. The people who would be advised to take the vax are the elderly and those with health comorbidities. It should be a personal choice. It doesn’t and hasn’t stopped transmission in any country. In fact the UK is now predicting it’s worst flu season ever. (Disease enhancement issues?) Who knows. But it is an experimental vax. So lets stop blaming each other. If you want the vax get it.

  And you, someone you know, or anyone needing attention after a road crash? Or ordinary people with the range of medical situations?
  Sure, have freedom of choice, have a million not vaccinated, but acknowledge that is a risk for everyone.

      No DaleK, it’s not nonsensical. It is true that the smokers, drug addicts, drunks, speedsters, obese etc. who clog up our hospitals now are also using resources which could otherwise go into, for example, preventative care, earlier screening, detection and treatment or initiatives to bring care to more isolated communities.
      To me, it raises the question of responsibility, which no-one ever wants: with a socialised medical system like ours, shouldn’t we acknowledge a responsibility to look after ourselves? I’m sure all of those who have caused their own or others illnesses or injuries are very fond of their rights – to do what they did, to get medical care when they need it. Perhaps we all need to be just as fond of our responsibility not to impose unnecessary costs on others.

        Yes agreed Ehlana. There is proof out there that the unvaccinated are hitting the hospitals in higher numbers. This is happening worldwide. That’s enough proof for me to think vaccination should be mandatory.
        
        Anyway it’s the ones needing treatment but can’t get it who are going to suffer if large numbers of unvaccinated covid cases start going into hospital. ie the elderly and vulnerable.
        
        You just have to look at how many days the person from the Pacific Island Assembly, who just passed away, was in ICU, some 40 days, to know that covid is not like other cases that hit ICU. Also the Fijian worker who was transported here with Covid, was in ICU for 70 days. That would be catastrophic if unvaccinated covid cases are occupying ICU space for those lengths of time.

        Setting aside the thorny issue of mandating a medical procedure (with a still experimental therapy) and this being a breech of the Nuremberg Code, I say your definition of proof is a little thin.
        
        What if, say, someone prefers to develop natural immunity (without associated vax risks) so that their body develops stronger and longer lasting immunity?
        
        What if, say, someone doesn’t want a leaky vaccine in their system potential turning their body into a variant factory?

      The local hospital is overflowing, the staff at their wits end.

      Government face saving is not really the issue, Stella.
      1. Would the health system be underfunded if it weren’t for the selfishly-inflicted conditions (both those who harm themselves and those who harm others)? The answer might actually be no.
      
      2. If it is underfunded, where should additional funding come from? Do we cut some other current government expenditure? Or increase which taxes? Or borrowing? Or charge people for the care they cause?

        The last time I checked the health system was there to protect me not I to protect it . The problem with social medicine is that the government has a stake in my looking after myself which is actually none of their business it becomes easier to harass me than to fund the system . The funding? Maybe if we were not spending millions on gender neutral toilets for Eden Park or wasting 50 million dollars on working groups to test the feelings on a cycle bridge we may have scraped a few nurses and beds together for the coming catastrophe.

  Re: fear porn. The UK is having nearly 40,000 cases a day. Scale that to our population and you get about 2900/day. So 5,000 may not be that far off.
  
  But I agree with the sentiment anyway – people are basically going about their lives in the U.K. Whereas the case predictions are being used here to justify going back to Level 4.

  The first example given, Albania, seems interesting. A big wave of “covid deaths” begins sharply in early 2021 in concert with the onset of the vaccination campaign, even though the country was on its way down from a recent spike in deaths – seems odd that that curve didn’t taper down as most do. The bulk of the 2nd peak is pretty well linked in time with the bulk of the vaccination based on Wikipedia info. Pfizer and AstraZeneca were mainly used, then CoronaVac.

    Looking over some more of the examples, the correlation is not at all clear. Some waves happen long after vax campaigns begin. Of course, the vaccines used vary dramatically across these countries as well. We need more systematic study of these patterns.

      I’ve kept looking into those graphs…There are some striking correlations, really quite startling. Israel….UK…Ireland…several others. Far as I can tell by checking many, the dates are correct (or chosen well) most of the time. I haven’t checked the death data for what it’s worth.
      
      In other cases there is no correlation at all. One possibility (other than differences due to vaccine types) is that the vaccine is fairly risky to the very old, and that countries with large numbers of very old people in nursing homes who were quickly vaccinated show an immediate and large mortality effect. Other places, like poor African nations, have very young populations and far fewer people react badly enough to die. Those also (I think) are often the countries that weren’t using Pfizer etc.
      
      Just my speculation though.

    There seems to be a lot we just don’t know about this pandemic, despite the amount of attention being given.
    
    Not sure what to make of that animation, is it suggesting that vaccination in fact caused a spike of deaths attributed to Covid ? Were those deaths in vaccinated people, which I doubt, did countries primarily start vaccination programs in reaction to cases so that deaths (which lag cases) will show up as they do ?
    
    One other interesting factoid is that a recent analysis (sorry again no linky, will try to post later) that across the world and also for US states, there’s only a weak correlation between the percentage of a population Vaxxed and the latest weekly or monthly (data varies a bit by country) Covid cases numbers. AND, that correlation is small but positive, so the higher the percentage of vaccinated persons, the (averagely) higher the number of cases. What does this mean, I have to say at this stage I am puzzled. Maybe it is too early, but certainly some vaccination programs have been underway for a reasonable time and one would expect to see some positive outcomes for all the effort.
    
    To me, my first thoughts when one sees a lot of contradictory data like this is that we are missing something in our analysis. There’s some important factor that we are simply not considering; or possibly the data isn’t ordered in the way we think it should be. So maybe it is our expectation that vaccination should be a major help in reducing cases is at fault. Possibly if we look at hospitalisations and deaths we would see a clearer pattern. At the moment that does seem to be one sort of solution, maybe vaccination is essentially worthless against catching the virus but an impact can be seen in hospitalisation ? Note however that the video link above is Covid attributed deaths, not cases.
    
    Also to note, this isn’t easily attributed to cherry picked data, the same sort of patterns are evident in a very wide range that is available. Thus there is something in the data that we have yet to tease out, something probably important to understanding quite what is going on.

      Have you considered that the “vaccinations” may be actually a scam? There is too much conflict of interest to ignore that.
      Big Pharma is making enormous money out of spike protein continuation. Such a protein is a proven personal autoimmune system war machine against the bearer. That got CDC approval?

        Kev, I may get around to that if logic and reason don’t tease something out. But it is way too conspiratorial at this stage. I’m still pretty firmly in the camp that holds that you don’t need malice when incompetence is an equally valid explanation.
        
        Though incompetence isn’t quite right, all major nations (excluding China, don’t know what they’ve been up to but they claim the lowest case and fatality rate in the world outside some statelets) have made huge efforts to get on top of the various outbreaks. Most have focussed on mass vaccination, but so far we seem to be seeing little benefit for this gargantuan effort and expense.
        
        Short term benefits exist, some places seem to have gotten on top of outbreaks but we waves have also hit others who seemed to be having success quite hard. Israel is a case in point. And in the UK, the data showing that vaccinated people are catching Covid in all but the youngest age groups at higher rates than unvaccinated, albeit with lower hospitalisation and fatality rates, is also a concern.
        
        The apparent success in India is worth watching, if Uttar Pradesh and Delhi manage to maintain their status of being near Covid free, that would be a major finding, but it is early days and other places (like Singapore) have had significant periods with minimal cases before new outbreaks have occurred.
        
        The vaccines are not very good at preventing infection, I think that is clear, but on the plus side, absent significant data manipulation, they do seem to have a pretty significant impact on reducing hospitalisation and death rates. That’s not how they were originally sold, but it does seem to be the revealed wisdom, as it were.

      After looking at those graphs (and making the posts above), I checked Australia and NZ. Neither country has any evidence of a surge of covid cases (or vaccine-correlated deaths, in the NZ case) timed with the vaccine rollout, even though we have many elderly.
      
      But also, neither country had much covid around in the first many months of their rollouts. There is apparently evidence that the chance of catching covid and dying is temporarily greater in the week or two after the first dose, due to an immunosupressive effect. It was discussed in the Rogan/Berenson podcast recently (minute 33, just looked it up), and it might also have also been in that big FDA session held about the booster. So maybe in countries that have a lot of covid around (not NZ and Oz, conspicuously) there is a spike of bad covid cases and resulting deaths that occurs due to susceptible vaccinated people becoming infected immediately after a dose.

    Well we are going to be the international test case in terms of how effective the Pfizer vaccine really is given we have had very low levels of community transmission so not alot of natural immunity to cloud results and Pfizers the only shot in town.

I note California has banned small off road petrol engines from 2024. This includes lawn mowers and chainsaws. Only a matter of time before our lot think this is a good idea and follow. I just stood by my group of blue gums, some heading up to two metres at the base. They need to come down in the next few years, too close to the house.     I remember, from the safety of New Zealand, talking on the phone to a friend in Horizon Drive, Malibu Heights, with lots of swearing and yelling in the background, as he watched a wildfire burn down one ridge and start up another towards them.
    Similarly our daughter sent an email, one otherwise quite Saturday morning, from the University of California, San Diego, saying “look at all the flames and smoke” as Cedar Fire which killed 15 people, came within 200m of the international student dorms. She was apt to send such emails, with photographs, to give parents grey hair.
    One person owning land told me they had to clear their land of undergrowth or the local council did and sent you the bill, then over years it eased until conservation groups got the council to ban clearing such growth – dopey in the extreme, since it helped fuel the fires that turned trees, really worth saving, into ash – and homes along with it.
    
    That they now ban off road petrol engines from 2024, to include lawn mowers and chainsaws, is something only Green loonies can come up with.

      Actually in a lot of the fires, until they get just too intense, the only things that do survive are large trees as their trunks are able to withstand the heat for long enough for the fire to sweep past. There’s an interesting photo of one of the towns in California, that I’ve seen, a before and after set. The before has this very pleasant looking place with houses dotted around (pretty suburban actually) with lots of tres of various sizes and a lot of brush and undergrowth, all very green. The after is a barren looking place with quite a number of large trees with (mostly) green crowns, and nothing else, no houses, no undergrowth, no brush, just the ground and the remains of roads and a few presumably concrete bases of buildings. Probably could find a whole series of concrete floor slabs if one looked closely.

  And how will our world-class (pffft) infrastructure cope when, in the brave new world envisioned by James Shaw et al, everyone comes home from the office and from 5:00 in the evening they start cooking with electricity (and this will include those people whose gas hobs have been outlawed), and plug in their electric cars AND a dozen batteries to recharge?

    Battery life varies of course, but a small lawn is one battery, medium is two. Contractors would need to carry and run a generator on their trailer or carry 20 or more batteries.
    
    There might be larger commercial mowers with larger batteries. The wind and solar powered mowers have so far proved to be a bust though…

      Having just bought an electric one I can tell you that when I was shopping around i saw multiple mowers with 3-4 18v 4a battery slots.
      
      Plenty of juice to do even a large lawn.

      Had two successive electric lawn mowers (corded) between 2002 and 2019. Repaired the bastards endlessly because while electric motors are dependable the rest of the structure is not.
      
      When the last POS began falling apart after just four years I caved and went back to petrol. Only regret is I should have bought one with even more torque. 🙂
      
      Mind you, my other mower is a 15 year old, grunty-as-shit ride-on.

      My view is changing, I now think unless he actually has a brain aneurism and collapses on the spot the Dems will cling to Biden for the full 4 years regardless of just how more addled and incompetent he becomes.
      
      But as an interesting exercise, let’s assume that the Democrats can persuade Harris to step down, maybe fake a medical scare or something, plus a huge bribe, whatever. That then allows them to nominate a new VP – and note that without Harris’s critical vote they are 50:50 in the senate and can’t automatically chose a replacement without at least one Republican vote – but ignore that.

    I just watched a very good round table interview with eight doctors and scientists. They’re not anti vax (well the traditional ones anyway) they said the only way forward is with treatments. They also said vaccinations being used right now are for Covid which has been surpassed by Delta which is a different virus. So the Max Vax for the weekend is absolutely futile.

Government seems to be doing an a**se about face increasingly re the covid response. Now seem to be in full damage control mode. All the suggestions businesses and the opposition are making seem to be getting fast tracked, antigen testing, talking about Miq home isolation. Not before time!

Bloomfield sounded a spent man on Hosking’s show this morning having to back down off his high horse. Should be an enjoyable next few days of backdowns. Get the popcorn out.

Next thing the government science ‘experts’ will be put back in their boxes. Andrew Little seemed to have found a new best friend in the GP Council head, who was wheeled out on the news last night declaring that ‘covid’s actually not that bad’ and ‘we have to live with it’. Wot?? Wonder how much it cost to buy that statement.

The Maori’s are declaring that their people will be worst affected with covid becoming endemic. They wouldn’t be if they get off the couch and get vaccinated. I’m sure it’s nothing some more settlements won’t solve.

Anyway sincerely hoping that Ardern and co come to their senses next Monday and open up Auckland before irreparable lockdown damage is done to the city.

    I agree with you that vaccination alone is not going to mitigate the worst effects of covid for those who are obese and even just overweight. But hopefully vaccination will keep some of these people out of hospital.

    Rapid antigen testing does not necessarily detect an infection. It can be up to 50% inaccurate, because it still relies on collecting a sample by bunging a cotton bud up your nose; only now by an untrained person, maybe yourself.

  Something like the I-MASK+ protocol, cheap and potently very effective. Maybe add aspirin as well.

  Prostitution is a legal occupation now and they are eligible for the wage subsidy. However, many prostitutes do not declare their income to the IRD and therefore cannot get the wage subsidy (as they have no income) without giving the IRD evidence of their massive tax evasion.

Do the current arguments about vaccination and anti-vax and vaccination hesitant compare apples with apples.
When we are vaccinated for polio it prevents polio.
The same for measles, mumps and rubella vaccination.
The yearly influenza vaccination is variant specific so may not do so.
Perhaps a reason it is preferred those vulnerable are vaccinated but not mandated.
Which brings us to the mandating or otherwise, whether by legislation or individual action, of the covid immunisation.
The MOH suggest only around a hundred people have a health issue that would prevent immunisation.
If you are immunised what the hell does it matter whether others are or not.
If it matters that much what is the benefit of vaccination.

  Just to mention though, the measles vaccine has around a 95% effectiveness, but is essentially sterilising so that the rare cases of vaccine breakthrough are typically not infectious, or minimally so. Mumps is a bit less effective 85-90%, but same sterilising effect.
  
  Covid, the big issue with the vaccine is that breakthrough cases are every bit as infectious as original cases in unvaccinated people. This is under the assumption that the vaccine has no impact on innate immunity and doesn’t undermine the normal immune reaction to Covid. This non-sterilising aspect is why despite very high vaccination levels in some countries, Covid is still spreading in waves.
  
  Strictly speaking I think there is some value in not treating the “vaccines” as vaccines in the normal sense, but as a preinfection treatment to boost the immune response to an actual infection so as to reduce the severity of symptoms and reduce the chance of hospitalisation and death. Leave the idea of “vaccine” to imply actual case immunity.

The medical professionals say she should just have it at the ED so her reaction can be managed…. Oh and she’s a teacher so she will also lose her job over this.

The slowness in getting to even 80% first dose in rural and some of provincial NZ does not bode well.

  Stu2, vaccinated and unvaccinated people seem to catch Covid with similar frequencies, but vaccinated people have a higher probability of developing serious symptoms and of needing hospitalisation.
  
  So household transmission levels wouldn’t change much, but more cases would need treatment. Being in the same house, so with high viral concentrations and probably relatively poor ventilation, is a major driver of spread. In summer with the warmer temperatures and plenty of advice to ventilate well and stay outside as much as possible, it could be minimal used.
  
  And it could of course be alleviated very efficiently if existing known effective treatment was offered to other people in the household, but that seems beyond our medical bureaucracies competence to arrange. Hells bells, even just recommending daily micro dose aspirin ($4 for 28 tablets) would probably reduce transmission by 50%, and reduce symptoms as well.

  When are they going to start treating the disease early? Sending people home until they go blue is not a workable strategy. Florida with monoclonal antibodies for early disease and contacts have controlled their hospital admissions and reduced deaths. Is there place for something cheap like the Indian packs of ivermectin, vitamins D and C, and zinc? The vaccine is not going to reduce the hospital numbers by much if at all.

And you, someone you know, or anyone needing attention after a road crash? Or ordinary people with the range of medical situations?
Sure, have freedom of choice, have a million not vaccinated, but acknowledge that is a risk for everyone.

    Driving a car we mitigate risks in many ways. Learning to drive well, wearing seat belts etc
    
    We mitigate the risks of getting sick from COVID by getting vaccinated. To not do so is irrational. And to add to the pain the decision will largely exclude you from society for years to come. If you are a recluse with no friends, no dining out, no going to the rugby, or coverts, well I guess it doesn’t matter. But if you enjoy those things you will be stuffed.

      But you do have a lot of choice. You might not have choice as to whether you encounter the virus, but you certainly have a lot of choice as to whether you encounter the disease and have bad outcomes (through obesity, smoking, and many other lifestyle choices).
      
      Many of the people needing treatment in hospital (and ICU) end up there due to lifestyle choices which are huge contributors to various cancers, trauma, heart conditions, asthma, diabetes, pneumonia, etc etc.
      
      Even when someone would have experienced a condition anyway, lifestyle choices typically make them worse.
      
      The same applies to almost all risks. None of them are evenly distributed.
      * Certain sports carry more risks than others, and those playing aggressively/highly competitively are more likely to be injured.
      * The vast % of all risk on the roads is centred around people below the age of 27 or so, especially males and those that hang out with them. Even within this age group, the risk is heavily skewed to a small % of dickhead drivers (my kids, for instance are at very low risk because they drive very cautiously).

        … his comment to me a couple of years ago was 20% of hospital in-patient capacity was dedicated to treating the results of smoking/alcohol/drugs. Weekend ED load was closer to 60% due to alcohol/drugs.

        Covid spreads much faster than any of the above other conditions you state could end you up in icu.
        
        You will not end up with 100 smokers in icu within 2 weeks of them taking up smoking. Nor will you see 100 people end up in icu from 100 car crashes that happened over a two week period.
        
        Therefore if the vaccination prevents people from ending up in icu that is going to help our icus from being over loaded.

  If they are really serious about getting rid of Covid from the country then why aren’t they using every tool at their disposal? Ivermectin. An alternate shot like Novavax or Valneva. They have one strategy and that is the Pfizer vaccine and it’s not going to work. Look, we’ve already spent billions. The least we can do is spend a bit more to get another vaccine and post out a pack of Ivermectin, Zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin D to every household.
  
  Or do the powers-that-be really not want to get rid of Covid? If they were serious they would try every avenue, especially ones that have worked overseas. But they won’t, because of politics and money, both of which are put ahead of the health of our country.

  As is the Health System, apparently, because it didn’t prioritise Maori in the early stages by allowing them to get vaccinated at a younger age than non-Maori – for example, vaccinating Maori 55 and over at the same time as those 70 and over in the general population.

I was having a chat with someone yesterday about why there are so many sex workers moving around in NZ at the moment.

The person who was involved with women’s refugee and similar organisations said, it’s highly likely they’re not sex workers but part of a gang run P distribution network.

Apparently, gangs use sex workers to deliver a lot of their products,
very reliable and no one asks any questions as their job involves going
constantly to strangers houses to provide “services”.

Also, because prostitution is legal that provides another path to clean and legitimise money made off p dealing.

I would be surprised if the government does not know this.

  Without taxes, there is nothing but borrowed or printed money to pay the day-to-day bills incurred by Govt. Unfortunately, this wouldn’t be understood by the current Govt as none of them have had real jobs.
  IMO, someone needs to give this Govt a good shake and remind them that even borrowed/printed money has to be paid back unless they are praying for inflation or a worldwide recession to make this borrowed/printed monetary value appear infinitesimal and thus fade into insignificance.

Last week was the worst week for the Government since it came to office in 2017. All four wheels seemed to explode off its Covid-19 response chariot at once.
Rather than her usual confident and assured self, the Prime Minister looked panicked, hesitant, and uncertain and then disappeared off the podium altogether as the week proceeded and the questions became tougher. Worse, she and her Deputy Prime Minister could not even agree publicly on simple questions like toilet arrangements for people holding outdoor barbecues in Auckland.

And this Government, if it can act honestly and transparently with any integrity, is still to spell out two vital truths, as itself brinks implosion, and the covid virus verges on explosion –

1 – all they can offer (even in terms of Treaty ‘protection’) is vaccination, to personally avoid serious illness, hospitalisation (if there is such capacity), ICU (again if there is such capacity) or death (capacity unlimited), and

2 – community immunity is a myth, as shown by women touring Northland, women visiting Blenheim, Aucklanders passing through Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown to Wanaka, and random truck-drivers being able appear anywhere, reducing the number of vaccinated persons, between you and a carrier, to nil.
So get fucking vaccinated – see 1.

That is why the Government’s message needs to be even more specific and clear than it has been to date. It certainly needs to constantly reinforce the “don’t hesitate, vaccinate” message, and point out far more loudly that the overwhelming majority of those getting Covid-19 at present or being hospitalised because of it have not been vaccinated. It needs to keep declaring loudly and clearly that people who are vaccinated are most unlikely to contract Covid-19, let alone end up in hospital, or even die from it.

But, above all, it needs to set some specific goals (for some unfathomable reason targets remains a dirty word for the Prime Minister) for when restrictions will be removed, and borders reopened. That will not only incentivise people to speed up vaccination levels but will also hold out the prospect of a tangible reward for doing so. Hope is a powerful motivating emotion, and the Government needs to be more overtly encouraging reasonable hope for the future as the next few weeks unfold.

Until and unless that happens, no matter how much the Government improves its communication act, or what special events are planned, the country’s Covid-19 response will continue to look directionless and aimless, the surest of all breeding grounds for uncertainty and failing public confidence.

    What NSW is doing is a first step at 70% double dose, and then this step at 80% double dose.
    
    We were at 62% double dose at the end of Thursday using the flawed MoH population numbers, actually 59.8%. So it will take some time to get to 80%+.
    
    NSW has a vast amount more ICU capacity per capita than we have. So I understand pushing for more than 80% here. Lets see how the ICUs track over the next month.

      ICUs haven’t been tracked since this Govt’s been in charge AFIK. I believe the Minister of Health has had a four-hour Computer Based Training module developed that provides an acquaintance with ICU Equipment but no operating competency demonstration is required. I’ve also been informed it takes 4-5 years of Managed On-Job-Experience to become an ICU Nurse but that’s not been addressed.
      No doubt there are others on KB who know more about this than me. My knowledge on the subject is limited to a conversation I had with my Post-Opp Nurse on Monday night.

My wife is a primary school teacher and will be back in class on Monday. She now needs a negative Covid test 72 hours before returning so will have one today…. BUT… um that’s it, testing done, safe for the staff and children to return!

Surely by Tuesday that test is more than 72 hours old and so is out of date (actually by Monday it’s really out of date), but apparently no more tests are needed ever.

What am I missing???

Having recently spent six days in a major hospital (but without one covid case in it) about two months back, and on two of those days overheard a nurse say to another that the hospital was “code red”, and having asked what that was, to be told “Code red is more patients than staff to handle them”, I would respectfully ask unvaccinated readers (that’s still unvaccinated because it just hasn’t seemed necessary) to look at –

I watched the Great Kiwi Bakeoff last night. Pretty mediocre show I thought. My main take away from it was that couple of contestants had their tribal affiliations on the screen under their name. The others had just their name. I got the impression one was a doctor but (if I’m right) that wasn’t written under their name. I’m part Maori myself but the obsession with things Maori lately is getting so OTT. One of the tribal bakers was using her “showstopper” cake to emphasize that we’re all the same inside. Kind of ironic.

I see Harry Tam’s mouthpiece, Ron Mansfield QC, has written a long long letter to Peters demanding a retraction of Peters’ claims about Tam and the Mob hookers or he will sue Peters for defamation. By God I hope Peters says “Bring it on!”

An essential element of a defamation action – as Mr Mansfield, long time criminal defence barrister can surely recall from Law School, is that one must have a reputation capable of being damaged by the plaintiff’s words, written or spoken.

Tam is a patched member of the Mob, and has been for forty years. He is a convicted wife beater who has had protection orders taken out against him. He has no good reputation to sully. In fact it is quite the opposite: he has the reputation of being a scumbag defender of the indefensible.

If Peters doesn’t call his bluff, it will literally be a case that will end up in the text books.

God I hope Peters doesn’t apologize!

If Tam was to sue, Brian Henry would have an absolute field day with Tam in cross examination. Section 30 of our Defamation Act provides as follows:

“In any proceeding for defamation the defendant [Peters] may prove, in mitigation of damages, specific instances of misconduct by the plaintiff [Tam] in order to establish that the plaintiff is a person whose reputation is generally bad…”

As has been well publicized, Tam is a convicted wife beater, and a person against whom protection orders have been made (IIRC orders sought by his ex wife). He has been removed from government appointments because of his history of abuse of women.

In his 40 years as a patched member of the Mob, there will be literally dozens of occasions in which he has acted disreputably or even appallingly…evidence regarding all of those events would be admissible, since defamation actions are all about reputation

It gets worse for Tam: it is well established that what the court will consider is the plaintiff’s actual reputation, not whether he deserves the reputation he has. By that test, Tam cannot possibly establish that he is widely regarded as a fine upstanding member of the community.

IMO even if he were to succeed – i.e. because Peters had, as is his wont made allegations without checking them out – Tam runs the risk of getting only nominal damages. In ancient English cases, successful plaintiffs have on occasion been awarded damages of a farthing – today’s equivalent would perhaps be 50 cents.

      The successful party in defamation cases has traditionally been awarded full costs regardless of the amount of damages, which would cover legal fees. As David Garrett points out, Tam has little or no good reputation, but as he is planning on giving away any damages, it probably won’t matter.

  So, what is the aspect to which the proceedings relate? Wouldn’t the answer be, misusing his essential work permit to “smuggle” two women into Northland?
  
  If Tam proves he did not do that; that he had nothing to do with the episode, then he has been defamed, regardless of what his actual reputation might be. The other matters you mention, membership of the Mob, convicted wife-beater, are surely irrelevant, meaning he could not be cross-examined on them.
  
  Otherwise, you’re saying that it is not possible for someone like Harry Tam to be defamed, which surely can’t be true.

Ahhh as I enjoy a nice cold lager in the warm spring sun I find myself happily reflecting on the celebrity demise of Wiles, Baker et al.

Their feeble protestations in todays msm, at the change in direction of this equally feeble government are a pleasure to behold.

They won’t go gracefully but go back to anonymity they will. NZ will be better for it.

  I don’t share your confidence that missing the mark will send them back to anonymity. Consider Neil Ferguson, the Imperial modler to end all modelers.
  
  His 2002 models predicting 50,000 people would die from Mad Cow disease when there were actually 177 deaths; his 2005 predictions of 150 million potentially killed by Bird Flu when by 2009, 282 had actually died from it.
  
  So monumental failures that even when added to sneaking around behind his own lockdown restrictions to screw his married mistress was not enough to get his flawed prognostications of the front of Number 10’s briefing papers.

    And worse, the recent UK parliamentary report into the Covid response used Ferguson’s figures to support the suggestion that the death toll there would have been halved had they locked down earlier. That’s the good thing with following the science; there is so much of it and so varied that you can pick whatever suits your prejudices.

  I have yet to see a logical reason for vaccinating little kids. It’s not to save them; they don’t as a rule get ill. Apparently transmission is largely from adults to kids, not the other way round, so it can’t be that. It can only be to reduce the number of people who can pass on the virus to the unvaccinated, and even if vaccination has that effect, to me, the unvaccinated can go to hell if they think children should get a vaccine so they don’t have to.

  Maggie: Umm…you are behind the play dear. It is common ground that Tam is an “essential worker” – or more accurately that he is declared to be one – the issue is whether he used that status to assist a couple of Mob whores to cross the border with bogie papers (there is no suggestion that THEY were also “essential workers”)

Just got a txt from Ma…..she’s fuming!

Said the last few weeks she’d been listening to ZB’s Marcus Lush coping a ‘fair old pounding’ from the ‘anti-vaxx brigade’.

Then last night, he changes tack, opens the show with…. “I’ll only take calls from people who drive early model Double-cab Utes”.

Tonite he says….”It’s for kids only”

Reckons she’ll have to buy an AM radio tomorrow and check out MagicTalk again.
