    Um I think you will find gun homicides in the USA are about 10 times those in New Zealand on a per capita basis.
    
    But I agree she has no solutions to offer the USA. The gun buyback scheme here was an utter failure. All it did was punish law abiding gun owners at enormous expense and for no benefit. It takes some doing to achieve that but this government now has a lot of practice.

      The Americans have always had access to lots of guns, but mass shootings in schools etc. were never a regular phenomenon until around the time of Columbine in 1999, and inter-gangsta shootings were never as frequent until maybe the 80s. For 200 years, mass shootings were never anything more than a vanishingly rare occurrence, and if any did happen they were isolated and directed at some specific person(s). It is a manifestation of a much deeper problem related to social decay. Mass shootings are an anti-social expression of a deep social alienation and dislocation brought about by the tenets of the cultural revolution and the repudiation of values that maintained cohesive communities and a strong social fabric, and kids didn’t feel so hopeless that they would shoot up public places in retaliation against broken society.

        Batman, FYI, if you define mass shootings in America as 4 or more people, between 2009 and 2022, 61% are committed in peoples homes, 1 in 3 are committed by people prohibited from obtaining a firearm, 53% of mass shootings are domestic violence related and 3 in 4 children that are shot in mass shootings are domestic violence related, 81% of mass shootings involved a HANDGUN and only 16% involved an “assault weapon” (and most of the weapons everyday folk think are “assault weapons” are nothing of the sort. Semi-auto, high cap mags doesn’t make a military designed weapon), however, the 5 deadliest mass shootings involved an “assault weapon” with a high capacity magazine.

  I once took on a contract that I soon realised I did not have the expertise to complete to the required standard. I quickly disclosed this and helped the employer find someone with the required skills.
  
  People like Poto seem immune to such assessments. She is so out of her depth I wonder how she sleeps at night.

  I heard it up until the part where she rambled on about the completely meaningless “misinformation” she claims is rife on social media. 18 months down the track I am still to get anyone in government to give me examples of what this “misinformation” is.
  
  On the other hand we have plenty of glaring examples of “misinformation” and downright lies from Ardern and her “experts”. Every single one of them has lied about every aspect of covid from the very beginning. Yet she is “concerned” about loss of trust in establishment institutions and her personal “experts”! Any loss of trust can be laid at her feet. She is the one who has lied and misled the public using the willing bought and owned mainstream media as her personal Goebbels propaganda outlet.
  She has certainly destroyed my trust in the medical community and the education sector.

    1.Every single one of them has lied about every aspect of Covid from the beginning – very bold claim which is obviously false.
    2.Comparison of Ardern to Goebbels is hyperbole and obviously false.

      3) – Fact, it is not highly debatable whether I had trust in the medical community. That’s conjecture on your part and complete bollocks.
      I fully trusted them and could prove it by taking you to the Doctors at my local medical centre who I still see socially. They would verify this. I told them personally my trust has been destroyed, particularly when one of their nurses refused to remove stitches from my wife’s face because she wouldn’t wear a mask. They both apologised. They understand why I distrust the system. Not them personally.
      
      But that would be a waste of energy and time as is my responding to your inane post.
      I do so only to reinforce to others what a useful idiot looks like. One who can’t see facts in front of their face, an Ardern fanboy who can see no wrong in anything she does no matter how much clear evidence is put in front of them.
      
      4) – I’ll concede that it’s a matter of opinion, however I completely disagree with yours. Ardern is fake and a fraud, she is poison and has destroyed this country financially and socially. It will take many years to recover from.

      So you understand, I’ve been a “left” (whatever that means these days) voter most of my adult life. This only changed due to the last year of Helen Clark’s reign when she got desperate. Any faint chance of my supporting Labour again was crushed the moment I saw through the fake Ardern when I met her briefly. It was apparent after a couple of minutes, she is a complete fraud and a very bad actor.

For some unknown reason (at least, for some unspoken reason) they are seemingly willing to spark WW3 over Ukraine. Now we also see Biden speaking less equivocally about a security guarantee to Taiwan. Isn’t there a golden rule that foreign leaders don’t get involved in domestic politics? The GOP (not the old Romney GOP) will take note and the chances of us getting a trade deal will be between slim and none.

It’s like Clint Smith and Greg Presland are organising the trip, itinerary and talking notes.

  Would you be really sure all your leadership or management will have your back if you decline or will you receive subtle signals to glove them some work?
  
  I have had this twice in my career; two household name forms – one where I was under huge pressure by my direct line manager to award a contract to a mate of his and, secondly, losing a contract for 9 months project management work when, after applications were long closed, and just as we were to sign on the bottom line they told me “Sorry, we’ve just had direction that an ‘acquaintance’ of a board member is interested and we will have to interview them….” and they duly got the role.
  
  Saying Mahuta had no direct involvement means nothing. It is a meaningless statement.

As corrupted as the likes of the FBI and others are, none of this would have been possible if the USA still had a true “Fourth Estate”

  In my mind, I’m trying to reconcile the above speech by Jacinda Ardern with the following description of her from Harvard Magazine:

  Respected? Compassionate? Empathy? I don’t think so. What she said was just outright nasty and snarky. While I don’t doubt she gets some pretty horrible stuff directed at her, to take it out in a speech at Harvard, one of the most prestigious universities in America, in such a petty fashion is cringe-worthy.

The lies around “green energy” are astounding.

I’ve been watching the wind generation in South Africa over the last week where there switching to green energy is causing massive headaches.

South Africa now has over 2400MW of installed wind turbines. So that’s 2400MW of extra power available for the good people of South Africa? Not quite.

Over this last week, the highest amount of wind power recorded during their peak demand (ie. when they really need it) has been just over 600MW (ie around 25%). Most of the time it has been far lower than that – 10% or less and the worst was down to less than 3%.

And their solar farms (PV) are performing worse: contributing exactly 0% of the power when needed.

If you want reliable power then you have to design for the worst case. That means every wind or solar system has to be backed up by a reliable generator (coal, nuke etc). That means building two power stations instead of one. Double the cost, double the staff to maintain them, double the switch yards, double everything – for the same level of energy security.

Yet wind farms continue to be built, promising taxpayers and share holders that they will achieve 50% of their nameplate capacity when 10% is a far more realistic number.

This is not just a problem in South Africa we have the same bullshit here.

The pie muncher told us the the solar farm being proposed for the Chch Airport will generate 150MW – enough for 30,000 homes.

Well that’s true enough when the sun is shining full noise, but that is only true a small fraction of the time. Most of the time it is generating zero MW or thereabouts, especially in winter when those 30,000 homes will want to run their heatpumps and make a mug of cocoa.

Unless someone is also building a “filthy” coal or nuke to back this up, then it is only half a solution.

Labour will endorse the green toys, building the real solution will be left to the competent team.

  I don’t claim to be an alternative energy expert, but I do live fully off grid so I understand it better than most I would have thought. I don’t understand the point of massive solar arrays or wind farms. They are intermittent and variable in quantity of supply, distribution is difficult and expensive due to location.
  Surely a simpler idea that would help reduce generation demand would be to have some solar capacity as part of any new build? No different to a hot water cylinder being part of the new build. Have 3Kw of panels installed connected to the main grid. The electricity meter measures electricity input and output. You pay the balance of power used or get credited for power generated.
  Most people are out and about during the day. The house is supplying power to the grid, the consumer is earning credits.
  Every house has a roof that faces the sky. The current electricity grid is established to distribute the power. The cost of installation on a new build is minimal. Even retrospective installation isn’t too difficult.
  There may be a reason why this isn’t considered as an option but I can’t think what it might be.

    Clan there are a few issues with putting solar (PV) on every roof:
    * PV is not a dispatchable generation. ie. it can’t be turned on by demand – only when the sun shines.
    * Peak power demand in NZ is between 4 and 8 pm. When the sun isn’t shining.
    Therefore, to meet demand you still have to build the other generators too and use coal/nuke/hydro/whatever to provide the power.
    
    Millions of people pushing back surplus PV during the day and then demanding it back at night does not work because there is nowhere to store it. Those coal stations still need to be fired up and people would be expecting that for free because they’re just getting their electricity back.
    
    That is why it does not work if you’re only charged on the difference. The only way to actually make it work is if you’re paid a tenth for the electricity you produce compared to the electricity you receive.
    
    If NZ did go through a massive PV exercise then we’d need to flip the day/night rates around making it cheaper to use power when the sun is shining and more expensive when it is not.

  It is different here though cmm.
  I was somewhat involved in an extensive piece of analytical work many moons ago now about integrating ‘intermittent’ generation sources into the NZ power system and market. At that time, you could easily add 20% (capacity) without any significant impact or imposition of costs on other participants.
  It works due to our highly flexible hydro system, though of course it is affected to a degree by our radial grid system. So we don’t need to double up here to manage short term security. Long term (dry year) risk is another matter of course….

    Our hydro system is very useful because it is a highly dispatchable generation source.
    Hydro can go from zero to full generation in seconds which means it still can respond to rapid changes in demand – brillinat stuff.
    But peak demand in NZ is in winter between 4 and 8 pm. PV is not generating and wind can’t be relied upon either, so it means there still has to be enough hydro, gas, coal, whatever to meet the full demand.
    
    Where PV and wind potentially help is making hydro last longer, but they do not help with meeting peak demand.

      As an aside, NZ is known in wind gen circles as the Saudi Arabia of wind. Only country in thre world I believe where wind is cost effective without subsidy. To a point we should build it, at some point the economics will reverse. At the level it’s at now it doesn’t really matter that it’s intermittent and not dispatchable – same as most demand side.

When the Christchurch massacre occurred the government and media made a big deal about blanking his name and details so he would gain no celebrity and there would be no copycat incidents.
Why do we then repeatedly publish details of the Texas killer. The NZ media has given detailed exposure to the killer, his actions, and his name. Are NZ’ers only influenced by crimes committed in their own country.
We have had one murder in Mt Albert on a suburban walkway and they have suppressed the details of the victim and it’s moved off the front page news. And one body in a Grafton park (another murder?) again with no detail at all. Increasingly the details of the victim, the incident and the perpetrator are suppressed in NZ crimes.
As a nation we much prefer to focus on America’s problems than our own. If it was really about stopping copycat incidents wouldn’t all NZ media about these crimes be framed as to minimise the celebrity factor of the killer and their actions ?

    Once a week I go into the class of one of that unhygienic “rabble”. A dedicated, skilled remedial literacy teacher.
    
    She was a qualified midwife in earlier times and understands clearly the value of tested vaccines.
    
    If Jacinda Ardern spent a week in this woman’s classes, I doubt she would have any great impact on the life of the pupils therein, but every minute this teacher spends with her pupils is Value-added life skills for them.

  It called it a pathway or some such bland term.
  
  There is absolutely no chance of it replacing “western science” as you term it. For a start, it would make all of those academics completely irrelevant, and avoiding irrelevance is the major motivating factor for any academic, along with Koru Club status and sitting at the front of the plane.

      The proposition which still stands is to take up time in NCEA Science classes teaching Matauranga Maori.
      
      The 7 scientists did not reject MM, they just argued that it should not be taught at the expense of an already depleted, inadequate Science curriculum.
      
      MM incorporates much more than observations of the Natural world… it deals with Law- protocol /social relationships/spiritual matters/ mythological tales, etc…and is much better placed in a Social Studies curriculum.
      
      The RSNZ was remiss in not supporting the Listener Seven and arguing for an intact NCEA Science curriculum.

This guy has been 14 years in prison, but he made statements such as:
*”Gangs are being accepted by the government and politicians. We need to make a stand – they are UNACCEPTABLE”.
*”{stop the narrative} they are just whanau, and we need to work with them”.
*Numbers of gangs in NZ are grossly underestimated, and don’t even include youth gangs.
*The Buy-back failed. Black market gun prices are higher now. Guns are coming across the border {something the police deny/downplay, and blame guns on channels from legal ownership}.
*Police should not target gangs just by focusing on drug activity.
*It is a culture itself that needs to be dismantled – go after the gangs directly.
*Police should NOT escort gangs to events. Do not be positioned alongside gangs.
Police should be breaking up the events. (!!)

Message being – stop giving gangs social validity or any degree of comfort.
Well worth a watch, and a good summary of what is going wrong.

Only the 2nd win in 24 years but the tide has turned and the case against him is a shipwreck now getting the right attention as it fails under close scrutiny.

How’s the economy going?

Higher inflation.
Higher house prices.
Higher food prices.
Higher interest rates (putting pressure on those when home loans are being renewed).
Higher high profile criminal activity (more shootings).
Higher increase in gang membership.
Higher occurrences of ram-raids (with business owners at their wit’s end).
Higher divisions within society.
Higher delays with the supply chain.
Higher retention of covid restrictions (compared to other countries).

Normally when that happens the Government of the day faces higher scrutiny and higher media pressure. But not this “Gracinda” government.

Instead we have the MSM Fan Club worshiping her because she is on an overseas trip to the USA & (PM & MSM) desperately wants her to meet the US President!

(Listened to a couple minutes each of the Tova show and Morning Report just after 8am, they are still “in love” with Jacinda and everything she does)!

And we still have the MSM Fan Club “respecting and obeying” Grant Robertson’s “financial acumen”!

(Not even willing to pose the question “should you resign after failing to control inflation and with the economy in a tailspin”).

Clearly much of the MSM are still inhabiting another world, that of Planet Labour, and appear to be detached from the struggles of everyday NZ’ers.

Is this so-called, Elite Capture, that the MSM deny when they write their columns saying they are not compromised by the $55m (plus much more) dished out to them, by Labour, to their MSM teams?

And have MSM realised that we effectively have a “Grancinda” Govt (as advocated by Robertson several years ago when seeking the leadership at the time), in which Jacinda appears to be the public figurehead (but can “disappear” for days, which is rather unusual for a PM) and Grant is always on deck doing the decision making!

    My SIL was hOD and senior maths teacher. She and the other senior maths teacher were both fired in Nov. they were “replaced” with a primary school teacher who is still taking the senior calculus and stats classes. They offered the two their jobs back recently but both declined based on the way they were “let go”. And of course they are both moving on to née careers by this time.

I just heard a news article that said a 4th (sweet Jesus!) jab provides ‘lasting’ protection.
1) What do they mean by ‘lasting’? 10 years? 20? Could they mean that it just lasts a little bit longer than jab #3? A couple of months?
2) How could they _possibly_ know that it provides lasting protection? Practically nobody in the world has had 4 jabs for more than a few months.

  I’ve had all the jabs so far and I don’t want to overwork my immune system with another of the damned things when I get no guarantee any of them are of any use.

  Masks are useless – they leak. They are simply a governmental social control mechanism.
  Vaccines are useless – you can still contract CV-19 even when “vaccinated” and you can still pass CV-19 on to someone else even when “vaccinated”.

Labour’s media bloc has given Wily-Willie Jackson’s uncle, Moana Jackson, a full-scale send-off.

After nightly pieces in State TV news for about four days, the subsidised NZ Herald capped off the obituary swathe repeating a feature containing this caption:”Moana Jackson was sometimes called the ‘Whispering Jesus’ because of the calm and reasoned manner in which he delivered his revolutionary messages.”

Ardern described Jackson’s death as devastating, reported Radio NZ.

In the Left-wing blogosphere, The Daily Blog (of NZ) described Moana Jackson as one of the country’s greatest intellectuals, and said: “his work with indigenous peoples lifted us all as a species.”

Moana Jackson was son of an All Black, Everard Stanley Jackson, who was the son of Frederick Stanley Jackson, an Englishman who played for the Lions.

Another of Willie’s uncles, Syd Jackson, was also a Maori activist, an M.A. who was influenced by the American Black Panther Party.

I see the curse of the 2nd Mt Vic Tunnel strikes again with some secret letter supposedly putting the kibosh on the idea being revealed by the NZ Herald.
This has been a talking point for as long as I can remember.
Next year if the Nats become the government it’ll be their turn to put it on the back burner.
Same with a 2nd Terrace Tunnel & a 2nd Harbour Crossing in Auckland.

Dumb place to locate the Wellington International Airport in the first place.

Now that there is 6 million for bollards for shop keepers – according to Poto, for ‘at risk’ shops, (such have been targetted before) what does this achieve?

$1,000 per individual bollard, was the Shopkeepers association figure on Hosking today.

I had already been thinking, this spend switches the onus on business to solve this. Better lighting, CCTV, fog cannons, bollards.
Where is the focus on the government around the perpetrators themselves?

This is a bit like telling the victims what THEY need to do to stop the ram raid epidemic.
If shop keepers in future don’t have bollard, well, they asked for it!
No rethink or pursuit policy, or serious consequences for youth offenders is not even being mooted.

The Labour response is kind of like sick thinking where a woman is raped.
Well, look how she dressed.
See how she went out after daylight.
=We wouldn’t have to charge men with rape, if only slutty females weren’t inviting it!

    But there were no school shootings.
    It’s not the guns.

    Of course the MSM gets all wound up about mass shootings (defined as shootings of 4 or more people), but these only account for something like 2% of shootings and are inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
    
    The vast majority of illegal shootings in the USA are gang-bangers shooting each other with illegal weapons.

    It’s a cultural issue. There were more guns in houses 60 years ago, and almost no mass shootings. Or look at switzerland with high rates of gun ownership, and almost no mass shootings.
    
    What changed is the (correct) perception of unhappy malignant narcissists that they would be able to get the attention they felt was due them by killing lots of people. The problem could be reduced greatly by minimizing or even outright banning reporting of these horrors. Never give them the attention they crave.

Surprise, surprise, when you look at the data underlying conclusions that white supremacy kills more people than other ideologies, it all falls apart.
In the US, the oft cited ADL figures include e.g. white supremacists infighting killings as acts of white supremacy, but does not include the Dallas BLM killer of 5 cops as any sort of ideologically motivated killing (those references to killing pigs to advance the cause of Black anerica could mean anything, just like Batman and Milky probably say).

Heard today our Dear Leader did a stealth visit to Waiuku College (south of Auckland) last week. She only met the Maori students. Apparently all others were not allowed to leave their classrooms. Some parents were informed of her presence by their kids, but they couldn’t get anywhere near the woman (and all her security, including Police) to make sure their displeasure of her was known. Christ that woman’s a coward. 😡

Ardern keeps NZ at Orange light with mandates for some industries and masks in shops. And then she goes off to Harvard taking maskless selfies with mobs of strangers. How is this different to Boris partying while the UK had restrictions. The only difference is she left the country where she made the draconian rules.
