Here is an interesting comparison. The number of people on solo parent benefit, Job Seeker support and a Support Living payment has gone from 275,000 in 2017 to 350,000 now – up 27%. However, the number of sanctions applied for unfulfilled work obligations has gone down from 15,465 in 2017 to 4,470 this last year.

A huge increase in the number of people who could work but do not, yet a very sharp drop in people suffering any sought of sanction for not turning up for work offered or not attending appointments, as an example.

What is your reaction? A government soft on crims and also soft on the lazy, and the dodging.

  It’s also noteworthy that, since the onset of COVID in NZ, the number of people measured by the Household Labour Force Survey as being unemployed (available and actively seeking work) has gone down by about 20,000, while the number of people receiving Work Ready Jobseeker Support has gone up by roughly the same number.
  
  It’s obvious that there are many thousands of people receiving an unemployment benefit, who are not actually looking for work.
  
  Labour: the government that cares about drop-kicks and over-taxes hard workers to pay for their idleness.

  TBH I am surprised that there are 4,470 sanctions.
  
  If you force these people to go to an employer, many of them will engage in sabotage. But that will be less likely if they then lose benefits for 6 months. MSD should initially target young men who don’t look totally drugged out and tell them “You are picking apples in Nelson”. If they refuse, stop their benefits for 6 months.
  
  It is frightening that we have 350, 000 working age adults on welfare at a time of acute labour shortages. Another policy worth considering is a limit of say 3 years over a lifetime during which you can receive unemployment benefits.

    I once worked in a Kiwifruit packhouse and saw there how easy it is to create mahem by sabotage.
    The people involved rarely sayed until lunch or smoko and then went back to Winz and were never seen again there.

    How about MSD using some of the no longer needed welfare benefits to pay a drill sergeant to take say 20 workers to the places they are needed, as needed. Apples get picked, farmers are happy, IRD is happy. Even some of the new workers might be happy.

        The drill sergeant major would be more likely to be ‘bullied’.
        If they have been unemployed for a few years they will be prepared to fight for their right to not work.
        Knew an ex-army man employed by the Probation Service, he said you were always worried about the likelihood of being attacked.

      Or the drill sergeant could pay the able-bodied by the day/hours attended. No drill = no benefit.
      When the workers showed that they were able to attend the ‘drill’ they could be offered a job at beginner rates.
      No extra allowances.

    Orchard owners don’t want unwilling workers turning up just to collect their wages. Those who are sent to work by WINZ against their will would be a hugely disruptive liability. As an employer I don’t want my right to pick my staff subverted by low level bureaucrats desperate to fill their quotas.

    I have also wondered about that, But seriously think if a teen is not at school or working then compulsory military training for 2 years.
    Look at the countries that do this already and low crime etc.
    The best thing about compulsory Training is the “net working” you achieve for the rest of your life. This is how Singapore operates and the first point of contact for the rest their lives. ie Who they did military service with.
    Great initiative.
    Make Super the same at the end of your life, How much tax you pay prorata and Super.
    Quite simple really.

  Real tale is in Jobseeker support – up from about 120k when Labour came in to 180k now, and the great lie that is the official unemployment rate of just 3.2% (that only counts a portion of these), Labour working hard to grow number of beneficiaries (that generally vote for them), 60k is ~2% of all votes cast in last general election.

    The Jobseeker Benefit is poorly named. You don’t have to be seeking a job to be eligible for it, but only those who are actively seeking employment are counted as unemployed. The reality is that real unemployment is significantly higher than the 3.2% claimed by Labour.

      Absolutely correct TS – It pisses me off greatly when the likes of Robertson spouts off about our low unemployment rate and he never gets questioned over the ever increasing number on the Job-seeker Benefit.
      National should be using the ‘combined rate’ to sell the complete picture as its based on actual numbers so can’t be dismissed by Ardern/Robertson as ‘misinformation’.

    The thing about the unemployment rate is that it is based on how people describe themselves in the HLFS.
    
    To be counted as unemployed according to the HLFS, and hence part of the numerator in the unemployment rate calculation, you have to be available for and actively seeking work.
    
    The HLFS numbers are a much better indicator than the Jobseeker numbers.

  My partner is on the jobseeker support. With me now fully retired at nearly 70 and her 63 it gets tight. Unlikely for a 63 year old to get work. She has had 2 offers. One was a nightshift (nope) The other was in Rosedale, meaning 3 buses each way. Useless spending nearly 4 hours traveling to do an 8 hour job.

    This is often forgotten on the right – there are always circumstances and no system is perfect.
    
    My wife works in construction – consultancy side. She was let go in her early fifties and despite the economy “roaring” and everyone we knew saying they couldn’t get staff, she was unemployed for two years. No benefit as I earned an ok salary, we lived in our own home etc. She would not have appeared as a statistic, despite actively looking for work. Took a part time fixed term job and is now struggling again – all due to her age.
    
    This ‘all folks not working are shirkers’ is bloody nonsense. Sure, there are no doubt a lot of folks in this country where benefits have become a lifestyle but there are also loads looking for work that can’t get it because of age, race or sex.

      Similar. My partner had not worked for 4 years, I was supporting her as I was collecting super and working. The lease ran out and the company could not find another factory. All of the assets are in storage – but my job ended after being there 49 years, even at 69 I was still going strong, plugging away like an old diesel.
      So things changed. Job seeker for partner and my super changed too, I was paying secondary Tax on the super, now it is M. Now I can’t find a job either, and I like work.

      New Zealand seems to have a mirror-reverse of the American Confederacy’s brutal “one drop” race rule. That stated any African genes at all and you were Black (and hence a potential slave).
      
      Generally, mixed-race New Zealanders choose their own official racial identity.
      
      However, in the media, in Government institutions and organisations, and among Maori activists, it seems to be presumed that if you are of mixed Maori-White descent then you are Maori. “One drop, and you’re indigenous.”
      
      It’s probably a favourable indication of NZ race relations that we don’t have an official mixed-race classification. Who gives a fat rat’s arse what proportion of White “blood” or Maori genes that a friend, relative, neighbour, or team mate has?
      
      Here’s how the well-known CIA World Factbook describes NZ ethnicities (2018 basis – near the beginning of the immigration blow-out):

  It is not about the girl’s interests. She is a bit player. It is a high level debate among adults (their ‘interests’) – the elite versus the normal, the down to earth realists.

  The child was neglected and abused before she arrived in the hands of the Pakeha Family.

SENT TO ME
Two different versions ….. and Two different morals.

OLD VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long,
Building his house and laying up supplies for the winter the grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.
TV 1 & 3 News, Sky News, and Seven Sharp show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
The country is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Sue Bradford appears on Seven Sharp with the grasshopper and everybody cries.
The Green Party stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome’.
Green Party Leader James Shaw condemns the ant and blames John Key, Rob Muldoon, Roger Douglas, Capitalism and Global warming for the grasshopper’s plight.
John Minto exclaims in an interview with TV News that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.
Finally, to gain votes to win an election, the Government drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
The ant is fined for failing to consider how his hard work and preparation has affected the Grasshoppers Mana; and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated under the Government Land Repo Act and given to the grasshopper.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government confiscates the house he is in; which, as you may recall, just happens to be the ant’s old house, which has crumbled around them because the grasshopper doesn’t maintain it.
The ant has disappeared to Australia, never to be seen again.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drugs related incident. And the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of Homeboy spiders who terrorise the once prosperous and peaceful neighbourhood with drive by shootings and the like.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2023

  As a disclaimer, I have little knowledge of, and no affiliation with, Arise Church. However, Farrier’s piece comes across as a cheap hit piece against an organisation that provides an alternative outlook to the Church of Progressive Liberalism, of which people like David Farrier are the apostles. What exactly is the aim here? Aren’t there plenty of other areas and topics on which Mr Farrier could turn his poisoned pen, ones that are of much more universal import than anything he could say about Arise Church. A case of low-hanging fruit, perhaps?
  
  We wouldn’t want anyone thinking of straying from the prescribed orthodoxy, would we? Heretics! After all, those Christians are always a ripe target for mockery and scorn – God knows the Christians have always been an obstacle to achieving social upheaval, and once achieved, to then making it stick. Those tenacious buggers are like cockroaches in a post- apocalyptic landscape.
  
  Best, then, to solicit someone from the “inside” of some putatively nefarious organisation, from whom we can have tease out (or perhaps even make up) some salacious tales to provide some much needed “insider perspective,” and to designate the organisation as a “megachurch” (sounds ominous, if ever so slightly hyperbolic, doesn’t it?). Imagine the damage a religious person could do to our secular utopia. Oh, the horror of it all.
  
  Once I was a few lines in, what immediately struck me about this piece is that it comes across as a closely analogous commentary on the workings of, I don’t know, perhaps something akin to the Labour Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. Is Farrier adopting the tactic of, say, Shakespeare, by cloaking his true target of critique in some alternative guise, lest the authorities lose patience with his impure and disloyal views?

Biden has just thrown a match onto the world’s most tinder dry fuel dump by saying the USA would come to Taiwan’s aid militarily if China got too stroppy. But no one knows whether he meant it or not. That is pretty serious stuff. It is not a game of ‘pick up sticks’.

Of course the USA should support Taiwan but the point is did he mean it? Was it it official? How will China react?

Maybe the USA will send Kamala Harris to Beijing to clarify matters!!!

    What is your argument: that false flags in the service of policy goals don’t happen, or that this incident doesn’t fit the description? As with anything involving the suggestion of a conspiracy, or with some circumstance perhaps not being precisely as it appears and is officially presented, the “argument” against it reduces to a fallacious argument from personal incredulity (i.e. I don’t accept the suggestion, therefore it is a false suggestion). Not good enough.
    
    We have seen enough, particularly in the last decade, to justifiably withhold the benefit of any doubt to the authorities. They have to earn it, and it should never be automatically given to them. While organic mass shootings can and no doubt do occur, context is very important in order to reach a conclusion.
    
    Gulag1917 above cites some very pertinent points, none of which you address at all. The federal government, desirous to restrict gun ownership among the populace, certainly has every interest in allowing such tragedies to unfold, given the pretext it provides for their policy goal. Collateral damage is likely an acceptable cost. The biggest red flag (among many) related to this event is the teams of heavily armed police waiting outside for 40 minutes while the loan gunman massacred 20 children, and even detaining frantic parents who wanted to go in themselves. Why was this the case?
    
    More broadly speaking, if we are in a position to accept that false flags can happen, then we are halfway down the track of accepting that they do happen.

    Leaving aside the many very well known historical false flags such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident that provided the pretext for heavy involvement in Vietnam, or the sinking of the USS Maine that precipitated the Spanish-American War, when the US above is openly invoking the concept of a false flag expected to be performed by Russia, then in so doing they are validating the very principle of a false flag. This is a very revealing admission. False flag attacks are “a thing,” otherwise why would the US accuse Russia of planning “a thing,” the type of which is but a fever dream of segments of the population?
    
    So, false flags can happen, as demonstrated, and if they can happen, it is a short logical step to the conclusion that they do happen. Why wait for the right set of circumstances to arise, when you can make them arise at your will? Cynical yes, but ruthlessly pragmatic also.
    
    The underlying assumption of those who dismiss the notion of nefarious actions performed or allowed by the authorities is really just that they believe that the government/authorities both wouldn’t and couldn’t so act. What is the basis for this position? There is no good reason at all to rule this out as a first principle, no matter how disturbing it is to contemplate. Much of the history of the world is the history of groups of people cynically and ruthlessly deceiving other people in the service of some goal, very often coming with a great cost.

  Armed security in schools is needed. If unaffordable, talk to the retired Veterans. I am sure there are plenty who would volunteer. Vets have been there done that on their Tours of Duty – they have faced violent shit. School shootings would stop overnight.

    As I noted yesterday, if society wasn’t fundamentally broken, mass shootings would not occur with anything near the regularity with which they do. Why did school shootings not begin in earnest until the 1990s, even though Americans have always had access to high-powered firearms? Because before then, US society was strong, cohesive and functional, whereas now, it is, to a much larger extent, none of those things. Depressed, alienated and probably dosed with powerful anti-depressants, the kids of the 1990s were some of the first fruit of a very bad tree. It takes a gunman to pull the trigger, but the causal chain goes back much further than that.

Christian Eteuati has been named as the violent walkway murderer at large. But where are the details about him? There are none and no trail of him on the Internet? Compare that to the Texas murderer where we have many details about his life , mental state, schooling issues etc. Who is the walkway murderer does he have a job, how long has he held the job, where does he live, is he a nz citizen, is he a 501 returnee, has he been in prison, is he a parolee, what do his friends, family, and employer say about his recent behaviour? Why is his face beat up in the picture? What is his previous criminal record? You know….journalism stuff.

By releasing his name and saying he’s wanted for the Mt Albert murder, they have diminished the chance of ever getting a jury that doesn’t already believe the guy is a murderer. The last time I looked, the golden thread of our criminal justice system, as it was so eloquently described by Horace Rumpole, was that you were innocent until proven guilty.

Here is the worst example yet of judicial rewriting of the three strikes law which is still the law, although of course its demise is near:

The judge, the usually pretty sensible Paul Davison, says that:
“…a 14-year sentence, even with the possibility of parole, would be so “disproportionately severe and crushing” as to shock the conscience of New Zealand.”

I say bullshit to that. With a few exceptions – such as people like the double killer and the ubiquitous troll Milky – I don’t believe sending this prick away for 10 years or so – a 14 year sentence with parole – would upset anyone.

But back to my starting point. This judge is effectively rewriting law again – in effect repealing a law which remains on the books, and which at least theoretically, parliament may never get around to repealing.

  Lastman: Sounds about right…I’m just waiting for China to do a deal with Tonga, which is massively in debt to the Chinese. Tonga also has a harbour in Vava’u, the northern group of islands, which would make a perfect naval base; known back in the day as The Port of Refuge. It’s big enough to take a couple of aircraft carriers and still have plenty of room for smaller vessels.

      Remember also that the commoners of Tonga now control the legislature; it is no longer the rubber stamp parliament it once was.     Got to give the Chinese credit though – as a strategy, it’s quite brilliant.
    
    Fund infrastructure for trade, that can also support military, through loans. Take over the infrastructure during the default – which the loan conditions and the ability to repay made default effectively guaranteed. Make the client state more and more dependent on you – more loans with none of that oversight the west demands (that prevents some of it being diverted), which means the ruling elite is effectively a puppet, propped up by loans and no doubt getting rich through the process, and you end up being with China having a slew of client states and able to potentially blockade two western countries main trade routes.
    
    They are playing the same gig in Africa I see.
    
    Dare say NZ and Aussie will end up throwing more “aid” at the Pacific for next to zero impact.

In fact, the fundamental issue with Catholic priests is that they are gay men committing sex crimes, and the alleged “harmful sexual behaviour” at Gloriavale is an essential feature of modernity, what with its championing of liberating promiscuity and all of its consequences, as well as trends like encouraging and even assigning virtue to homosexual teachers who “come out” to their charges and/or propagandise them into LGBTQ ideology.

Oranga Tamariki and whanau put ideology over the safety and happiness of a young child in an appeal in the “Moana” case. The assumption that cultural issues trump child welfare in a case where a child has repeatedly been abused and neglected in a previous whanau setting, and is now in a stable and happy home with people who love her and want to offer her all that is best for her, is a shocking indictment of the extent to which social ideology can be pressed at the expense of a vulnerable individual

Should be worried about Jacinda’s “agreement” with California or is it just PR fluff? I’m tired of these foreign agreements that come without warning and end up being future justification for stupid domestic policies, “oh, but we signed up to Davos, Rio” etc etc. The only winners are tenured politicians looking for their next gig, the losers are everyday people left holding the baby.

  I thought governments usually informed the public in advance to allow for considered debate whilst making its case.
  
  Nowadays Labour is so “Open & Transparent” they don’t even bother.
  
  What is that arrogance? Or telling the people “the science has been settled”? (And if one disagrees, that they have been “misinformed” by social media)?
  
  Meanwhile the MSM simply cheers along with Labour.
  
  Is that why there is a public perception they are known as the Team of $55m?

Customs arrival and departure figures over the last year show an excess of about 60,000 people leaving over arriving. In April 2022 alone the excess was 16,000 people. This is not just pent up OE demand, nor will these people necessarily return to New Zealand, as Ardern so blithely assumes based on her personal experience. New Zealand has the second biggest diaspora in the OECD, just behind Ireland, and nobody seems to want to do anything about it. You know why the country is so unproductive? Because those with ambition, drive and intelligence have all packed up and gone, leaving a motley collection of welfare parasites, civil servants and property speculators to run the place, with the assistance of a bunch of unskilled migrants.
