    Ardern is a massive advocate of Agenda 2030. She didn’t run on that policy. She didn’t campaign on it. She is not representative of the electorate of NZ in my opinion and she should not be making concessions to the UN without a clear mandate from the public of NZ.

      I regret to say that this situation is not going to be easily reversed in NZ, because it’s not of our making. Cindy is but the messenger and implementer of a situation set in motion by the UN in concert with some very dark personalities such as Soros, Zuckerberg, Gates and Schwab.

        The advent of international global bodies is really only a little over a century old. These institutions never existed for many millennia, and instead, nations governed themselves locally and thus more efficiently and effectively, and they could respond quickly to particular needs. Because the power was so dispersed, nobody could usurp global institutions, simply because there were none to usurp.
        
        The reason we “need international institutions” is simply because it is so much harder for a tiny minority with its own agenda to control the world without them. It is not an issue of improving governance. In fact it is the opposite, because invariably, the more centralised power becomes, the less influence anyone on a local level has. That is the intention: disenfranchising people, stripping of sovereignty, and handing control to unaccountable faceless technocrats and bureaucrats.
        
        In order to make a case for ever increasing global governance (and by implication, diminished local governmental structures), the national/community mindset that is the natural horizon of human beings has been substituted for a global mindset, and calls to “global action” to approach manufactured pseudo-crises, chief among them Covid and anthropogenic climate change.

Rabid eugenicists will be delighted, and doubly so to learn that the paper’s title is overly positive: its own data refutes the assertion of ‘temporary’. How so?

At ‘Vaccination date + ~30 days’ there was a 14.5% sperm count reduction while at ‘Vaccination date +150 days’ there was a larger sperm count reduction of 15.9%. Increasing loss of sperm count does not suggest ‘temporary’. Refer Table 4, Page 14.

I’ve started a fertility dataset, to track this but official data sources are typically updated annually, or at best monthly in some jurisdictions. This means good quality data for analysis is probably 12-18 months away.

    Interesting. I can imagine one way this could happen, purely hypothetical so just as an example. Some of the adverse harm from the vaccine seems to result from people catching covid close to the time they were vaccinated. So if a study was done in an area experiencing a delta or omicron wave, it might be expected to find worse vaccine side effects.

The massacre of the children at the school in Uvalde, Texas is not getting the coverage it deserves. Any coverage appears to be about gun control. That an unbalanced teenage male could purchase AR 15s is definitely newsworthy.

However what stands out for me is the utter incompetence and frankly cowardice of the Uvalde police. We now know they were outside the classroom for 77 minutes while shots were being fired inside. Children rang 911 from inside the classroom begging for help during this time.

We now know that one of the classroom doors was unlocked but police officers never tried to open the door. We also know they had ballistic shields and rifles.
Also they had received training two months before. The training was clear. With an active shooter don’t wait, don’t establish a perimeter, go straight in and confront the gunman.

So they had the equipment they needed but never went in. They stopped parents from going in. Finally border patrol agents entered the classroom and shot the gunman.

My question is this. Given the same situation in NZ how would our local police react? One would hope with more daring and courage?

However I am worried about our police. At White Island they did not rescue people themselves and they stopped rescue attempts by others. The same at Pike River. Could they have intervened when a motorist was severely beaten by gang members recently? They didn’t intervene to stop Hone Harawira’s road blocks last year.

Id be interested in others opinions? I’m all for giving the police all the training and resources they need. But in return, would they step up when we need them the most?

Update – we have just learned that one of the teachers that was shot called her husband who came to save her. But the police detained him, took his gun away and escorted him from the school.

This story just gets worse and worse! Armed police officers were on the scene within 3 minutes of the gunman. But the commanding officer did not allow them to go in.
How many students and teachers would have survived if the police had gone in straight away? As they were trained to do.

  Interesting. I don’t know the answer to your question re the New Zealand Police. I figure it would be something like this:
  
  If a guy with a firearm is in a home/classroom/office with hostages you negotiate and stall for time. However if a police sniper can get a clear shot, the guy is taken out.
  
  If during the ‘negotiations’ the guy starts firing, it is forced entry and deadly force. If a hostage gets killed, that is unfortunate, but the alternative may be they all get killed.
  
  It seems fairly simple, but as usual I may have it totally wrong 🙂

      I’m not sure of numbers but they also aren’t all tooled up ready to go at all times. They are deployed on general operations so have to be called, gathered and deployed as a unit.
      
      That takes time.
      
      But the recent armed ready response teams have been disbanded and Andrew Little was scathing of a strike force so there’s no help coming from this government

The article focused on a couple of attractive young women killed with great potential and world at their feet but per the article no political gain to be had in the West so not much reporting on it.

    If the media were good faith actors, that event, and any and every event like it, would have been huge news for days. Like Christchurch was. World leaders would have made emotive statements condemning such barbarism. So why did this not occur? Because neither the media nor the power structure they are a part of and serve are good faith actors. They are wholly agenda-driven narrative manipulators. As a consequence, what we see and hear and the things we are supposed to be concerned with or outraged about are not based on any objective standard, but only the standard of what serves their agenda, which is determined by a set of interests. 50 Christians being murdered doesn’t serve the agenda (in fact it probably undermines it), in the same way that acknowledging and condemning US Black on White or Asian hate crimes doesn’t serve the agenda, whereas any far less prevalent but much more widely covered White on Black incidents do, even if this means that the circumstances have to be cynically distorted to do so.

  The police standing around outside the classroom in Texas is getting plenty of coverage.
  I think about the situation over there when I pick up my granddaughter from her school where anyone could wander onto the property with a gun/bomb/chainsaw/knife and cause all sorts of mayhem, but they don’t.
  The teachers aren’t armed, the doors aren’t locked, the windows are wide open. The kids don’t wear bullet proof school school bags.
  None of these things are even a talking point.

    The AR-15 is the original design of the M16 assault rifle (as in, the AR-15 came first, and was then adapted and adopted by the US Army, who designated it the M16).
    
    The only practical difference is that the AR-15 is semi-automatic while the M16 allows for fully automatic fire (although the military don’t recommend fully automatic fire because it’s hard to maintain aim). So not sure why an AR-15 would be any less “survivable” on a battlefield than an M16.
    
    Note that nowadays the general AR-15 design is manufactured by many companies beyond Armalite/Colt. It’s basically an open source design now. So when it’s said someone has an AR-15 it’s more likely they have an AR-15 derivative of some sort.

      You are totally correct. The military m16 and the ar15 are essentially the same weapon. The original A1 version of the M16 was capable of full auto or semi auto. The subsequent A2 model had a 3 round burst limiter in the automatic mode. This means that the trigger had to be released and depressed again between bursts.

        Yes the AR15 was initially introduced into the American Army in 1964 as the M16.
        
        Eugene Stoner, in the video linked to below, blames the US Army for supplying unsuitable ammunition for the rifle on its introduction, and for initially not training soldiers on its use.

      From the june 1981 issue. Which wouldn’t be a problem except that the myths it contains have been thoroughly debunked in the 40+ years since. I did particularly like this line from the author though:

      On a battlefield the lack of ability to cause a quick kill is less of an issue than when hunting as a wounded soldier takes up vastly more enemy resources than a dead one.       In all of these school shootings a semiauto 12 gauge full of buckshot and some speed loaders would have been a much more effective weapon. Completely legal in NZ as well.

  Scott, I have always been supportive of a strong stance on law and order which I consider essential for a high functioning and cohesive society.
  I too am now very concerned about our police force and their ability to maintain law and order given their recent track record.
  They have become soft on real crime and overreaching on peaceful protest. I fear this will escalate to thought crimes especially if critical of their puppet masters, the labour government.
  I have now lost all respect and confidence in any of them. Sad but true.

  That school shooting was own to George Floyd and Black Lives Matter. US Police are scared witless to shoot a non white. They wait and hope they top themselves. There was a case where a Policeman was stood down because he stopped a black for not wearing a seat belt. The black filmed the event. I watched it. The Policeman did nothing wrong. The black was baiting him and threatening him. Yet the Policeman was stood down.

  Despite the guy being known to have fired a shotgun, and not even knowing if the family inside was alive or not, they went direct to him – one was hit by a car as a result but luckily they put the animal down with their firearms. Excellent result, aside from the injured policeman.
  
  However, in other instances the NZ police have let wounded people bleed out and die, due to the delay in setting up cordons and even keeping ambulance staff back, so it depends (like in Texas) whether you get someone with some personal bravery & initiative, or an utterly risk averse person on the scene who is effectively paralysed.

  The actions of the NZ police in recent years have been a mixed bag.
  
  A commendable example would be the Christchurch mosque shooting. There the police actively stopped BT’s vehicle and confronted him, despite the significant risk to themselves. But I completely agree that the other examples you cite (Hone Harawira’s thugs making roadblocks, the gangs, White Island) were disgraceful failures.
  
  However I don’t think the fault lies with the frontline police. I have full confidence in their courage and training. I think if they’d just been allowed to do the job they’re supposed to do, the outcomes would have been different.
  
  The fault lies purely with the leadership, especially at the political level. Basically the frontline police have been told to stand down and let this shit happen.

    The singer in the article appears to have transitioned in 2021. Their give a little page fundraising for the surgery ended in dec 2021. It is very recent and their facebook page still contains almost exclusively their career and work in their previous identity and gender. I hope that it becomes easier with time but maybe people asked what the person liked to be called because it is a recent change.

Here we are in winter. Habitat for Humanity and AMI Insurance have done a survey of homes and found hundreds of thousands of households live in unacceptable conditions. Many are cold, damp and expensive to heat. Renters are significantly more likely to be concerned that their home is too cold, 60% of those renting privately versus 40% of those who own their own home.

A third (approx. 635,000 households) state that their winter power bill is excessive. Did I mention a majority of households think their home is too cold?

Some of these numbers don’t make sense.

Almost all private rentals are now insulated and many have now had heating upgraded. And there is the widely available winter energy payment. Most dampness in rentals is caused by the way tenants live – if it is structural tenants have powerful remedies.

Still and all, clearly now it’s up to the few remaining net taxpayers to step up. How about an army of clipboard warriors pop round regularly to make sure households are opening windows and not drying washing inside.

  Perhaps most homeowners come from the “put on another jumper” generation, so we are not worried that our homes are too cold etc.
  My niece was in a flat in Chch last year which met most of the healthy homes requirements. It had openable windows (though the landlord recommended they keep them closed due to so many burglaries in Riccarton), no underfloor insulation as it wasn’t feasible. Had the fans. Never been anywhere so cold and damp. They had water streaming down the inside of the windows at 2pm in full sun on the north side of the house.
  The healthy homes standards don’t deal with the fact that some houses are just past their use by date. Instead they force fans and extra insulation on people who don’t need them, and where they make next to no difference.

    What are the reasons for cold and damp? Cold is fairly straightforward to identify reasons. Damp could be a range of reasons, some the responsibility of the landlord to fix. Lots of info online, tenants can do some reading then talk to the landlord as a first step.
    
    I get that renters don’t want to make a fuss. As (if) more rentals come on stream landlords will become slightly less risk averse. Maybe. With the new tenure rules / consequences landlords are still going to be super careful.

  Condensation freezes on the INSIDE of our windows.
  And no, it is not the fault of the tenants. We ventilate well, use dehumidifiers, etc. In fact, the worst room is the one we heat with a fireplace, which dries the air pretty well also.
  It’s just an old, cold house. NZ is very slow to figure out insulation and efficiency.
  Retrofitting old houses with insulation (as this one has) can only do so much when the underlying design is flawed in this way.

  I did a back of the envelope calculation of the cost of employing 300 temp staff to assist with the running of the support program.
  Assuming 28 weeks through the 5 month period of the program, a work week of 35 hrs and wn average hourly rate of $30 the cost is about $8,820,000 in wages plus the cost of accomodation of those workers.
  Never has so much been spent by so few for such little return.

  Now that many people are paying $2000 more per month for mortgages since the beginning of the year, and house prices have dropped – quite alarmingly in some areas – there are now many people who are upside down and owe more than they’d get if they sold up. With the increases in mortgages and other costs many might be forced to do that.
  
  All the people in that position would have got there by relaxing the lending criteria to make things more “fair”. Well how do they like fairness now I wonder?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many oxymorons in just two sentences. Those guys are in serious la la land. Of all the different media websites I read stuff is by far the most bias, incorrect and out of touch site in my world. How do they keep a straight face writing this crap.   We escaped a higher death toll from Covid for a number of reasons, especially the initial wave from March – June 2022. Summer/autumn meant better weather, more people outdoors, and the 2,000km moat around the country played its part too.

I became aware yesterday of a large Government agency that has settled a pay negotiation with the Public Service union. It applies to all staff earning less than $100K. The settlement involves differing increases for different jobs.

However, the agency has also agreed to make a lump sum payment to any staff who receive a pay increase over the 2022/23 year that is less than 6.9 percent. The lump sum is the difference between their ‘normal’ pay increase and 6.9 percent, which is, of course the latest inflation figure.

In other words, the agency has linked wages to the CPI.

  I am not xenophobic, homophobic or any other phobic. I treat all people with equal respect until they clearly demonstrate they no longer deserve it. I don’t try to “fix” them. I simply ignore them in my life and presume they will do the same.
  These people will not do the same, they are determined to impose their sense of reality and their world view on the rest of us. As we’ve witnessed over the last almost three years, they will use whatever tools at their disposal to inflict their beliefs on us. Legislation, police riot squads, media bribery.
  We are moving towards some very dangerous times with Ardern leading this destruction of our very way of life, our social cohesion and the futures for our children. This is ideologically drive madness with no basis in reality. It needs to be stopped in a hurry.

Told her I’d had an email from Sylvia-Park-Mall confirming they would be.
She thort it might be a good time to go for a leisurely browse out there…. given most of the undesirables that usually inhabit the place on a Friday may have other things to entertain them for a change.

  Looking at the Transpower live data site (https://www.transpower.co.nz/power-system-live-data) just now I see that generation by way of “Liquid” (“Hydro” is separate) gets a mention.
  I don’t see any mention of diesel anywhere (I’m sure it used to), so I’m wondering if Transpower have done a bit of ‘rebranding’, renaming that ‘filthy’ diesel to something more innocuous.
  If “Liquid” doesn’t actually refer to diesel, does anybody know what it does refer to?

  Please also remember all the other things in our lives that depend on leccy too:
  * Water, including cold water, needs pumping. If you don’t have at least 20 litres stored you’re silly.
  * Sewerage pumping stations are needed at the other end to take the outputs away. Have a plan for that too.
  * Get yourself a gas stove & heater and gas for them.
  * Emergency lighting is probably a good idea.
  * Keep your vehicles topped up. No leccy means no petrol pumping. Apart from transport, your vehicle can also act as a generator.

      I remember ones that never had electricity and were always in hand pump mode – along with diesel generators that were turned off at 10pm at resorts, on farms, etc.

      The last time I used one of those was in 1982 in Zululand. A small shop that had no electricity but sold petrol from a handcranked bowser and half-melted icrecreams from a kero freezer.

    I’ve been keeping an eye on the electrical generation in South Africa. Over the last couple of years they’ve gone woke and are no longer building (or really maintaining) their coal generation. All the money and hype is going into solar and wind.
    
    They now have many gigawatts of both solar and wind.
    
    Peak demand in South Africa is around 6.30 pm every evening in winter. The sun isn’t shining so PV isn’t working and it’s up to wind to do the work.
    
    The most I have seen is the wind producing 60% of its name plate capacity. Normally it is less than 10%.
    
    That’s the biggest problem with renewables – they just don’t work when you need them. If you design around 10% availability then you need to over-engineer by a factor of 10 and still accept that sometimes the power system will fail.
    
    This is what really makes PV and wind the most expensive generation options out there.

      Transpower NZ website was showing wind generating 18MW out of a max of ~1000MW earlier on today.
      FF currently generating about 1000MW.
      We are a _looong_ way from wind replacing FF in NZ, but I do realise that hasn’t stopped other countries from doing away with FF anyway.

Trotter may differ from my thinking at a political level, but he’s always been a good thinker, and he articulates his points well.

I’ve just received an email from Peter Goodfellow, President of the National Party. It begins:

Dear Tony,

As a member, I wanted you to be one of the first to know that I have decided not to seek re-election as President of the National Party at our upcoming Annual Conference in August.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to serve our Party as President for over 13 years. I’ve seen highs and lows, and after much reflection, I feel the time is now right for someone else to take National into the future as President.

I will remain as a Director on the Board for one final term to assist in the transition and help provide counsel to the majority of relatively new members who joined the Board less than one year ago.

A new president will be elected at the first meeting of the new Board after the AGM portion of our Annual Conference.

Regardless of people’s opinions on Goodfellow, his service to the National Party has been impressive, and has represented a significant commitment on his behalf.

But it is time for the party to move forward, and Goodfellow’s decision not to seek another term as President, signalled well in advance of the party AGM in August, gives the party the opportunity to turn a page a year ahead of next year’s election.

There were some very capable people elected to the Board last year, and there will be another election in August. I have my preference for the new President, and time will tell if that is right. But for now, thanks to Peter Goodfellow for his years of service, and kudos to him for exiting the role in a dignified way.

However Paula Bennett showed earlier this year that 1) he’s not the only person who can fundraise, and 2) you don’t need to be the party president or even a board member to raise large sums of money.     Carter isn’t on the board, which elects the president from within its membership. He resigned from the board at conference last year after an unsuccessful challenge for the presidency.
    
    The manner of his resignation caused considerable discontent among members because it gave the media another chance to bash National instead of focusing on Judith Collin’s speech. To the best of my knowledge, he is not standing for election to the board this year.

Well as they say blow me down with feather, after complaining yesterday that the likes of the Parliamentary Press Gallery are hopeless when it comes to questioning the Prime Minister, Newstalk ZB’s Jason Walls proved me wrong when he spoke to HDPA yesterday!

On the Chris Hipkins apology to Charlotte Bellis revelation yesterday, Jason Walls questioned the PM as to whether she will also apologise to Ms Bellis, because after all she is “the head of the government and the buck stops with you”.

Well the PM deflected (and probably flapped her arms around in order to take off and depart the scene, unfortunately a radio interview can’t confirm that) but Jason Walls stuck to his guns and asked her again “will you apologise for that” and did that throw the PM or what, she ended up repeating her scripted reply and Jason Walls concluded with HDPA that she won’t apologise, ever!

But here’s the thing, when Ardern deflects it all back to Hipkins (2-3 times in that interview), she is effectively throwing Hipkins under the bus.

Which is also not a good look by the PM, in fact it is appalling behavior from her (and it also shows up how bad her leadership skills are).

And deceitful. Because let’s face it, Hipkins would not have been misleading about Ms Bellis’ case (by releasing private info to the MSM and also mislead the MSM with other false statements at the time) if Hipkins hadn’t got “sign-off” presumably from the likes of Ardern … or Robertson in the first place.

Now that would be the real story here, wouldn’t it?

Not sure what the moderation process is but I have had three comments waiting release from 9.57am, 10.11am and 10.25am – it is now 12.31pm.
I get I am not posting under my name but neither are many others whose later comments have been released over the past two and a half hours.
If this is to be a “debate” we need to be able to comment and at least be published in fair time. I have been reluctant to post anything on KB of late due to this ongoing negative treatment (including deletion of posts without advice) from I can only assume is Batman. I am yet to break any of the rules for posting on KB.

    Wishful thinking. If anything, your rates will go UP!
    
    The rates are determined on relative values.
    If all property values increase/decrease in lock step the rates don’t change. If everything doubles or halves the rates won’t shift much.
    
    However there will be some variability between regions in a city (because some lose a lot of value when others don’t).
    
    Bottom line though is that the piggies need their trough and they’re going to extract their rates from the ratepayer – no matter what.
    
    If the people at the sad end of town increasingly ask for hardship relief from their rates, you can bet the people on the Maggie Pie end of town will be expected to pay more.

        Of course they will agree to the increase. It allows them to charge you higher rates!
        
        Why anyone would request them to increase the assessment is beyond me.
        
        When we bought our current house, the evaluations had increased way more than what we bought for. I got them to accept the purchase price as a reassessment value. That knocked around 15% off the assessment and reduced the rates quite a bit.

        What we do at tennis, when the new CV’s arrive, our regular group of lunch-girls take them with us down to Soul Bar.
        At the end of the day, we put them all on the table. Then we get our designated driver to stack them in order of ‘highest-to-lowest’. The one at the bottom of the heap has to pay the bill.
        I’ve never had to fork out….whereas poor old Prue, she’s been ‘it’ for the last 3 times. She’s also our nominated driver everywhere we go.

  We’ve been to Middlemore A & E twice in the ten year I’ve lived in this area.
  In January when my wife broke her wrist she was seen pretty much straight away.
  The other time was maybe eight years ago and the wait time was eleven hours.

    Timing is everything.
    
    Three weeks ago I was sent to Chch ED to get some tests and monitoring. I arrived at around 3.45 pm. I didn’t have to wait long and was seen in 15 minutes (though they were expecting me).
    By 6pm the place was packed and people were waiting hours.
    
    The staff told me that the problem they have is lack of funding to have enough staff. Even with the MIQ problems etc, they don’t have the funding to employ the people they need.

  You laugh, but on the Gold Coast last week we saw a number of bicycle paramedics in the beach area. High-end mountain-bikes with a container on the back (not unlike the ones the pizza delivery guys use) with first-aid stuff in it. I guess it could make the difference between life and death if traffic was bad or they needed to get on the beach.

According to the Herald, a Maori astronomer wants people to use Matariki to focus on tradition. He says people should focus on whanau, not binge drinking.

What the hell is a traditional Matariki celebration? Is there any real tradition or is this just some woke make up nonsense?

I’d think that binge drinking is about as close to tradition as you can get – along with eating KFC and thumping the whanau – ie just the same as Christmas and New Year holidays.

“The Ministry for the Environment is looking over the process that saw Minister Nanaia Mahuta’s husband and two members of her extended family appointed to a five-member working group.”

How the _____ is it possible to appoint three members of one family to a five member working group? Surely it was obvious this was going to be seen to be wrong.

I guess “the wife of Caesar [being] above reproach” is just a dreadful colonial imposition.

It all seems a bit odd to me.
We’re hell bent on giving 50% control to a small bunch of people who have some undemocratic way of selecting their representatives, and this is all good, but we need to avoid letting them use those same methods when selecting representatives for working groups investigating the way they view things like waste management.
We should make our minds up about what’s acceptable and what isn’t.

I well remember back about 20 years ago, if me and my Ex were at a loose end, we’d head over to the Takapuna Boat Ramp and sit on the sea-wall, watching the maniacs trying to launch & retrieve their Runabouts.
Honestly, you’d have to see it to believe it 😀

Obviously nothings changed in that neck of the woods….it’s still a Free-Range Asylum.

It’s been nagging me for some time that Matariki is not really a long-standing or profound tradition in Maoridom let alone broader NZ culture. About 5 or 6 years ago over a coffee in Wellington a prominent figure in Maoridom told me that he basically had recently “invented” Matariki for commercial reasons. He was probably exaggerating but I did walk away with the distinct impression that he had at the very least just picked up a little something and seriously embellished it. So I got to thinking about this and how I’d also read pretty much every authoritative historical text about NZ including King, Belich, Sinclair, Moon etc and have no recollection of Matariki ever being mentioned. So as a basic check tonight I picked up my copy of the 2009 Raupo Maori dictionary, first published in the 1940s and revised and updated about 20 times in the ensuing years. It has about 10,000 Maori words in it and one is conspicuous by its absence. That word is “matariki”.

  That would be very unsurprising. So many modern cultural events and ‘traditions’ have been manufactured by people looking to profit. Turkeys at thanksgiving, Valentines day, Christmas gifts, Easter bunnies. Be weird if Maori didn’t jump on the bandwagon.
