Does anyone else think this still ongoing covid crisis has been massively overblown?
I’m in isolation myself as I write. I’m an older person, of large build, so in the higher risk category.
But I’ve had 3 days of flu like symptoms. Now on day 5 I’m on the improve. Back to work in a couple of days.

So is this it? Is this what we’ve shut the world down for? People are nervously wandering around wearing masks in the main street to this day. Why are we still doing this? What purpose is this serving when for the vast majority of people it’s a mild illness?

Why can’t we be like Great Britain and get rid of all covid restrictions? What are we waiting for?

    I think Labour is keeping Covid mandates in place partly to please the Karens who Eric Rush has said give him strife if doesn’t enforce mandates in his supermarket, partly to spite those they see as not bowing to their will and also because they are hoping that reminders like masks will anchor people back to 2020 when Jacinda had a world leading covid approach according to shallow thinking people.

      Walked into NW Devonport the other day and had forgotten my mask.
      Grabbed what I wanted and was checking out and said to the lady approving my Liquor purchase “sorry, forgot my mask”.
      She replied “no-one cares”.
      Even on the Ferries, who have been VERY strict, there are more people who don’t wear them.

        Some liquor outlets like the Trusts out west are a bit 1984’ish, pursued me around the shop, when I pointed out that other people in the shop didn’t have masks on he said they had exemptions, yeah right. Jacinda fan boy just missing the comb below the nose🤣🤣

      Matt, the IMHO the government is maintaining what ever restrictions it can get away with in order for the public to accept (via fear) their largely disproportionate response which has caused social and economic mayhem on future generations of Kiwis.
      I’m not disputing the validity of the initial (short) lockdown response (including the border) that afforded NZ time to observe the pandemic progression. However from that moment on, there was overwhelming global scientific evidence of exactly ‘what and when’ NZ could expect from the virus. But despite all this, the government kept up the unnecessary draconian responses (especially vaccine mandates) and continued to play catch-up to the very last second…remember the RAT debacle. It’s still doing the same now, despite scientific evidence to the contrary.
      
      The main question is why? Incompetence or malfeasance?

      Same in Oz. Got off the Air NZ flight having had it drummed into us that we must wear masks (I don’t, thanks to my exemption), only to find (pretty much) no masks in sight. The masked I do see I’m wondering if they’re newly arrived Kiwi’s. Nobody but nobody in business or general life gives a shit it seems. NZ – it will stop when you say and do so.

    And it is that fear, that it could happen to me, that I could get seriously sick and end up permanently disabled or dead, that the government has stoked and that drives those who see the unmasked as selfish and uncaring. (Probably the same way they see all National/Act voters, business people, Pakeha or men, actually).
    
    In truth no-one is guaranteed their next breath or a trouble-free life. Most of us realise that, we do our best to look after ourselves and we choose to live the time we have.
    
    The scale of the emotional and mental health problems caused by the response to Covid may prove just as debilitating and deadly as the disease itself.

It is happening. The evidence is becoming clearer with every passing week. The massive rise in heart conditions and “died suddenly” has occurred alongside the rollout of these experimental vaccines. I haven’t got the figures but it is becoming obvious that these events are not happening in the unjabbed group to any extent.
      The financial harm will cause much death, mental health damage and associated societal misery for decades to come.

    Jabbed and boosted? My wife was jabbed and had to get the booster for her work (teaches children particular skills), and got Covid, presumably Omicron. We didn’t pay any great attention to isolating from each other, in fact we slept in the same bed.
    
    I was very reluctantly jabbed but refused the booster, and didn’t get it. Anecdotal I know, but I’ve seen some data that suggests Cindy’s statement that “this will be a pandemic of the unvaccinated” is a load of horse manure.

      It’s obviously not a pandemic of the unvaccinated considering that 95% of the adult population have been vaccinated and a quarter of the total population has now recovered from covid – and that’s just the reported cases.
      
      The fatality rate sits at less than 0.1% and that’s people who died with rather than necessarily of it.
      
      So yes, we’ve trashed the economy and two and a half years of life for something far less threatening than the seasonal flu. It’s been a monumental failure of leadership, not only in New Zealand, but pretty much everywhere except Sweden.

    Were they vaccinated? It is becoming more apparent via real world data and empirical evidence that this is now a pandemic of the vaccinated, and the vaccines are doing more harm than any perceived good they might have appeared to do at the beginning. OAS is happening as predicted.

    It can be a very serious disease for people whose immune system is not working properly.
    
    The ones who end up in hospital are the very old, the very sick, the very fat and the very deficient in vitamin D.
    
    It is very difficult for people living in the higher latitudes (above 35 degrees) to get sufficient sunshine in winter.
    
    People with dark skin are particularly likely to be deficient.

      Your first para applies to me. Caught Covid early May and still badly affected by low saturation and severe breathlessness. Specialist reckons it will improve over time, maybe as long as a year! The problem is that immunosuppressants apparently reduce the seroconversion rate (production of antibodies) so are being withheld. A classic Catch 22 situation. But life goes on, just less actively.

    About 1 in 3000 who get omicron die, almost all geriatrics or extremely obese and or otherwise ill. About the same as seasonal flu.
    
    If you are under mid 70’s you have more chance of dying in a car crash this year than omicron

    Same onboard. Currently have 6 positive cases.
    2 super fit and healthy are the worst affected and older ones just flu and no issues.
    Onboard procedures written for original Covid are a nightmare to deal with.

  Scott – there are many people who totally agree with you and more are waking up to the nonsense that the reaction to the covid circus actually is and has been a disaster from the beginning.
  
  It might be possible to give some leeway and say that maybe in the first 6 months to a year, some of the policies could be forgiven as being done under unusual circumstances. Personally I don’t think they can, but I can understand how some people might think that because it was “novel” and we didn’t know much about it, panic was forgivable and mistakes can be made.
  
  The fact is, along with most other countries, we dumped tried and proven pandemic response policies that have been around for decades. Policies that did NOT involve lockdowns, social distancing or masking. They relied on basic common sense. Protect the vulnerable. THEY stay home and away from potential infection sources. If you feel ill or showing symptoms, stay home until you feel better. Everyone else get on with living. “Soldier on with Codryl” – remember that?
  Some people get sick. Some people die. Just like always happens. Basic stuff. Stuff that works, always has always will.
  
  Instead, this government and others, decided they could do a King Canute and stop the spread of an aerosol borne virus. They never could and they never will. It was madness. Either that, or as is now becoming more apparent, it was a deliberate policy to implement the “Great Reset” and “Green New Deal” that many western liberals have been pining for for decades. Covid was either the tool or the excuse to implement this ideological insanity. Shutting down economies, restricting movement, implementing draconian and undemocratic laws and mandates.
  
  There are plenty of theories as to why this has been done. If you haven’t found them you will soon enough. It’s becoming clearer with each passing month that this was a deliberate act.
  
  Then there is the compulsion and bullying around “vaccines” that don’t work and are now showing to cause much harm and excess death. Also it appears that those most vaccinated are at most risk of catching covid. It is becoming a “pandemic” of the vaccinated. These are now becoming verifiable facts. The vaccines prevent your innate immune system from recognising and reacting to new variants. The implications are concerning.

  I have just read yesterdays post on the Productivity Commission and its people problems. It neatly sums up how shit poor NZ is at managing people.
  I was appointed to my first management role in 1973 at the tender age of 21. I had 8 females reporting to me. The youngest was a couple of years older than me and the oldest was the same age as my grandmother.
  I learnt the art and it is an art form of management in a very short time. Alas over the past 50 years I have witnessed some really shocking management ( and governance a field I moved into some 30 odd years ago).
  In the case of the PC its not hard to see the problem. As an early CEO told me to loose one staff is unlucky to loose two is unfortunate. Any more than that is gross incompetence.
  The problem is people are pitch forked in management without any training or determination if they have the skills. The same goes for governance and Directors. Just like the best players dont necessarily make the best coaches the same goes for management and governance.
  I say a big part of the shit poor productivity in this country is down to a lack of good managers and good governors. Starting with the Parliament.

      Never ask to do something your not prepared to do yourself.
      People mix up leadership and communication which are 2 entirely different beasts.
      Ill say again. Pychometric testing identifies any strengths and weakeness and how to deal with personality types. Not too mention how to get optimal teamwork.

      Exactly. As a junior I told my boss that I considered my primary job was to make him look good. When I became a boss I told my staff that my primary job was to train them, support their endeavours, and protect them from the bigger bosses. Of course, in turn their efforts made me look good!

    This applies in all areas of life.
    
    While you discuss management here, I have seen over many years that skills in one area don’t necessarily transfer to others. I have been in the aviation industry. Some excellent pilots don’t make good captains and vice versa, some pilots who don’t necessarily have the manual flying skills are good captains.
    
    It is all a matter of recognising what you and those around you are good at. When you look at our present bunch of politicians, you might see that they were very good speakers and Union organisers but when it comes to implementing policies and getting things done, they are shite. Sadly too many people don’t see that, yet!

  It seemed overblown from the day I first heard that we were going to be locked down back in 2020. Even then we knew that the disease mainly affected the elderly and infirmed, and the claims that 80,000 were going to die unless we shut the country down were patently ridiculous.
  Nothing that has happened since then has convinced me that I was mistaken with that view. On the contrary the more we learn, the more I realise I was correct.

Is this the most Irresponsible Government that New Zealand have ever seen when it comes to spending
Taxpayers money.
Whilst there is a need to look after the most vulnerable what has happened here is the same problem that the Country has with serious crime in New Zealand and the Government’s go soft on crime policies, the only difference here is the Government’s be kind and caring policy that allows people to have, housing ,food ,clothing and many other
things paid by the taxpayer under there Social Welfare system.
So I ask this question will this take us back to the 1970’s when we had the start of generational welfare dependence because the system they have installed now which is raping the taxpayer funds can’t go on forever before the population says enough is enough you have to learn to live with money you get before you can expect handouts.

      Steve it is more nuanced than that.
      Trump used misinformation to refer to news stories in the MSM (mostly about him) that were factually incorrect, but as now used by the MSM, misinformation is information that may be true but contradicts the narrative.
      And Jacinda doesn’t generally lie, she makes misleading statements. For example she never said she didn’t lie, she said it was possible not to lie.

    I was fairly sure we were doomed, for moderate values of doom, when a couple of years ago I read that she had said with a straight face “if it doesn’t come from my government, don’t believe it, we the government are your sole source of truth”.
    
    …and after saying that, she *wasn’t* pointed at and jeered and laughed at everywhere she went, including by Gough and all the other ‘student politicians’ who when they were barely out of nappies would never ever agree to trust any government on anything.
    
    But then, what to expect from the President of the International Union of Socialist Youth in 2008. “Don’t trust the government, unless I run the government”. Yeah, that’s the ticket…

  Yep Maggie, I’ve previously relayed messages (from more credible economists than Orr and Robbo) that NZ inflation will top 10% and mortgage rates will be back in the teens.
  
  Best advice may be to start paying off unnecessary debt now.

    * Kiwisaver: down 25% off what it should be and probably further to go.
    * Cash in bank slowly evaporating due to inflation.
    
    It will be fun to see what happens when people realise they need 15% salary increases to keep from going backwards.

      Invest in yourself. Re educate. Upskill.
      For when we come out the otherside you are ahead.
      Then you may be able to command higher wages.
      Seems the only way to eventually beat inflation.
      For others . The trick is too reduce loses due to inflation.
      There are no winners.

        That advice is relatively straightforward to follow, even if not easy to do, when you are still of working age and physical working ability. For aged and medical retirees, the best many can do is to grow vegetables and spend less money. But for many, having less money to spend will put them literally on the poverty line; and as they are not members of a patched gang, they will get no more $ from Teh Kind One.

For once he was right. Within six months, Labour was spending well in excess of $100,000 per day, and now it’s in the region of $1,100,000 per day. That’s $1.1 MILLION every day of the week.

      Seems to me that it would be a dumb thing to do for a conference leader to set up a conference in a place with such a reputation, it shows no respect for the welfare of the attendees at all.

  Haven’t read the story so can’t comment on the specifics, but yes; getting the fingers or having people flash their lights at you ANYWHERE is not uncommon. Doesn’t have to be just out west, I’ve had it around Albany, Orewa, in the CBD, Ponsonby … other drivers get annoyed all the time. You’re driving too slow/too fast/not signalling/in the “wrong” lane/add your own.

Woods blames our precarious electrical position on unreliable thermal generation. This is a lie.

Thermal generation relies on fire. Fire is one of the most reliable technologies that has been serving mankind since forever.

Thermal generators have extremely high availability factors so long as they are maintained properly.

Woods is pushing for her darling generation technologies: solar and wind. These are the least reliable technologies there are. The wind blows erratically and the sun does not always shine (and it certainly does not shine at night).

I’m watching as South Africa has massive load shedding due to going down the path we seem to be hell bent on following.

Today South Africa had Stage 6 load shedding. That means an average of 9 hours a day with no electricity!

South Africa has recently invested massively in wind and solar. So how are those going?

Wind seldom generates more than 20% of it’s nameplate capacity and often it is far less – less than 10%.

At peak power usage time (6.30pm) solar is generating nothing.

Meanwhile what IS providing power, lots of it, but not enough, are the old coal power stations – some of those built in the 1970s and still generating power with relatively high reliability even with extremely poor maintenance.

This is what is in store for us unless we pull our heads out of our holes.

    Things are very different in Australia (and California etc) because air conditioning is a huge % of their power usage. The nice thing about that is that the sun is generally shining when you need the AC on.
    
    In NZ our peak power usage is in winter when the sun is not shining (even if it is shining, winter sun is relatively feeble).
    
    Thus we must be careful not to fall into the trap of “do what Oz does”.

    Coal burning still supplies an important part of Australia’s electricity, especially in Victoria, which burns “brown coal” – lignite. There are huge deposits of this in Southland.

Posted the below in the kiwibuld post comments but think it should probably be here…

Labours energy policy is their greatest failure, we just haven’t seen the full result of this failure yet. get ready for 10+ years of power shortages and massive price increases.

I have been calling the energy policy issue for the last 5 years. The irony is that Megan Woods identified the issue and the required supply increase required in her own inaugural speech.

The issue is two fold. Not building enough new generation and not enough baseload capacity.

Labour appear to have done nothing at all to improve the situation and everything to make it worse.

A simple solution would be to require each power producer to be able to supply say 10% more energy then required to meet demand. Any intermittent (read Wind, solar etc) generation added must be matched by a similar (or proportional) amount of baseload generation. The government should have fast tracked any RMA applications with passing being the default position, treating them as emergency requests.

The above would allow, cheaper power as supply would exceed demand. The excess supply would cover emergency situations like breakdowns and droughts. No wind is NOT an emergency situation. It would also address the problem of energy companies building Wind only as an easy option that can get RMA approval, leaving us with a baseload deficit.

  A more efficient solution would be to implement a capacity market alongside the energy market. This is done in some jurisdictions but there was never a solid justification in NZ (though it was talked about, it was pretty balanced as to the value for cost/complexity it would produce)=until recent years when lots of intermittent generation sources were developed.
  
  I’m surprised that this hasn’t been revisited, or maybe it has as I’ve been out of market design for close to a decade now.

1. Our highest electricity use is always on cold mornings and evenings.
2. The only way it gets cold is when it is still and no cloud.

Therefore it is obvious we need enough electricity generation for peak periods when there is no wind or solar.

What do Labour/Greens propose as a solution for peak electricity generation on calm cold nights? You guessed it – double the amount of solar and windmills.

The loony left is so stupid they do not even know how stupid they are.

  To build a battery to store 1000 megawatts of power for 1 hour at US$120.00 per kilowatt hour costs $120 million.
  for 24 hours costs US$2,880,000,000.00
  
  But we would probably need to about two weeks back up for when on of those large anticyclones sit over the country.
  
  That would cost US$40,320,000,000.00
  Divide by 0.62 to convert to NZ$65,032,000,000.00
  
  To build a battery that will last about ten years.

Oh deary me. Light rail from the Wellington CBD to Island Bay. That will work :-(.

And get this – a new Mount Vic tunnel with 4 lanes. But only two lanes for private cars. And the old tunnel is just for walking and cycling. So that means 6 lanes of roads through the tunnels, but only two lanes for private cars. 🙁

And I see nothing about duplicating the Terrace Tunnel. Which is a horror story just about all the time as 3 lanes of motorway narrows to one lane in the tunnel.

    And right next to the existing Mt Vic general use tunnel is a pilot tunnel where it was planned to put two extra lanes through the hill…. been there for decades.
    
    Could easily push the pilot tunnel in two lanes and have two lanes east and two lanes west with the existing bus tunnel converted to a pedestrian and cycle tunnel… (though I am sure that would prompt whining as its a fair hike up the city side of Mt Vic to the bus tunnel entrance…)

    MCos raises a good point, the Pirie St. Hataitai bus tunnel would surely be the better tunnel to have for walking/cycling. Not only is it shorter, the buses won’t require its use because they will have better alternatives. Being one lane anyway, why waste the twin-lane main Mt Victoria tunnel for cycling? Just utter madness.
    
    As for the new tunnel only having two lanes (one each way) for cars, again utter (greenie) madness. People will still be using cars, vans, people movers, trucks etc despite the Greenies thinking otherwise. It should be 4 lanes for cars (two each) way and if the buses can’t be content with using the old Mt Vic tunnel (only), then make the new tunnel 6 lanes!
    
    What are we, a third world country or something? Can’t we think ahead and be more future-proofing as the city grows larger population wise?
    
    Otherwise all we will end up having is yet more congestion (and cars idling)!

      Well a couple of obvious examples that come to mind was two guys interviewed on TV at the protest saying that Covid was a hoax and it didn’t even exist followed by another shot of a guy holding a placard saying Covid was caused by 5G.

  That misinformation supposedly reached and influenced people means actual information would reach the same people.
  Instead of endless ads saying “Vaccinate!” where was any sound information that explained how vaccines work, and have for decades , and any explanation how MRNA varied from other vaccinations. All could have been covered in a series of ad length items.
  Where was any documentary on MS television – there was not one, that I am aware of.

  As has several times been suggested before, if Ardern or a representative had fronted when the first protesters arrived in their ‘convoy” and invited 10 representatives to meet her or cabinet members in Parliament to hear their points of concern, when the bulk of protesters arrived and demand she show, those there first would have had to say she has done that already. We have sent a delegation in, already.
  In as much as that didn’t happen, is one reason why everything else did happen.
  
  It was not so much “misinformation had brought the hundreds of protesters together”, but further fucking non-delivery of actual information on the part of Ardern’s Government – as much as anything else.

    Representatives is something the “convoy’ did not have – no leader. That was a downfall. The whole convoy was organised, but at Parliament there was no rep, no bunch of say 3 who would have talked about the reasons for the protest.
    It is almost like the Govt Reps just stayed back and waited for the rent-a-mob to mess things up.

  They’re going after the EPA (and by extension all overreaching Government bureaucracies) in the next week.
  
  Basically, the EPA has claimed they have carte blanche in deciding unilaterally how they want to control anything enviroment related. The lawsuit is saying that the federal Government has to make those calls and they can’t hand that level of power off to unelected bureaucrats. Obviously, Constitutional power should only be wielded by elected representatives of the people. It will be interesting to see how the power mad “Liberal” Justices manage to dissent against this decision.

      I’d also point out that Trump has clearly shown a willingness to “stack” Courts with Originalists and given those two religious rights cases that went through the Court in the last week (that should have been stopped in a lower Court), there are clearly a large number of ideological Leftist judges in the lower federal courts who Trump’s supporters would suggest need to be replaced.

Mower bloke in the naki had a car through the shop window , apparently only 5 on duty on a Saturday night , they had other priorities so didn’t chase the culprit when he wouldn’t pull over and couldn’t hang around for long .

So where are they ?

In a word, they are SHIT!

Apart form the confusion of word-soup that makes up the daily numbers/hospitalisations/deaths, here’s another clanger.

Their simplified pictoral guide of how to use a RAT:
* It doesn’t even show the person putting the swab up their nose. The person is just dabbing around the outside of the nostril!
* “… going low and slow, about 2 centimetres deep”. WTF does “going low and slow” mean?

You really couldn’t make it more confusing unless you tried! Even then it would take a good effort.

3 out of 5 residing at Chez Masterley have the vid. The other two have had it, although 1 sounds like he is going through round 2 despite testing negative.
I had a couple of days of sniffling and coughing but am back to normal. The other two are the same.
I thought it was my usual winter cold which clears up after 2-3 days. the rat test thing disagreed.

Another conspiracy theory bites the dust, it’s getting harder and harder to find an opportunity to wear my tin foil hat.

LRAD devices (sound cannons) were used on protesters at parliament.

“Recently, Police have confirmed this through an Official Information Act request, LRAD weapons were used against peaceful protestors who were simply standing for freedom. ”

Note: Those who came in wearing masks on 2 March 2022 were not a part of the protest.

“The document states “…police have 17 LRAD units, bought incrementally since 2016, and that a tactical options report must be completed for the use of an LRAD. The manufacturer’s specifications for the LRAD model ‘100x’, used by police, says the devices can project 140dB, about the sound level of a gunshot, to a maximum range of 600m”.

Police also denied the use of pepper spray at the protest, in clear contradiction to the video footage of protestors being sprayed.

Before the second raid on 2 March 2022, “a new crowd-control pepper spray product with a higher capacity, Sabre Red Mk 9, was also added to the list of approved products”.

“The obligations of police to provide aftercare, by decontaminating and avoiding positional asphyxia, were also changed from “must” to “must if the circumstances allow”. No aftercare was given on 2 March.

  That’s a laugh. There is video, from early in the protest, of cops getting caught by the spray their colleagues were firing at protesters.

I remember when

Local paper had a front page story about a narrow bridge which the local community wanted to be made a one-way bridge.
The article detailed three accidents in the last three years being used to emphasise the need.
The approach to the bridge narrows, so that cars do have restricted separation on the bridge, and it is a stretch of highway that allows higher speed.
In two of the three accidents, one fatal, the cars hit the concrete bridge supports.
However, there is no mention of whether another car was approaching the bridge at the same time.
No mention of time of accident, whether drugs or alcohol were involved or excessive speed.
They propose one way traffic, restricted speed to approach, rather than prominent signs highlighting the danger.

Why are calls for speed reduction often lacking
in what could be considered important facts.

At the bare minimum, it is completely unacceptable to report on damage to the civilian structure and claim that it was attacked deliberately without also telling the reader about the factory complex that lies right next to it.

NZ Herald is loyal five-eyes propaganda when it comes to this topic, nothing more.

  Listening to the discussion on ZB, you could sense it dawning on Hipkins that he could use this to get the Team of 55m to run another culture war headline against National. After a jumbled start to his response where he recharacterised what Mitchell was saying and narrowly avoided declaring that a quarter of New Zealand women were police, his breath quickened and the pitch of his voice started to rise. His heart pumped more oxygen to help with the task of getting the words piling up in his brain to tumble out of his mouth as quickly as possible. With some luck he managed to get them in roughly the right order. His excitement turned to a crescendo of triumph as he talked over Mitchell’s reply, probably thinking ahead to the tweets he would spend his publicly funded day writing and checking for responses in lieu of addressing the issue that was the original subject of the discussion.

This Maxwell thing is strange. Ghislaine Maxwell will know about the book of names and words, and she will have seen it. Copies or references will be with her family. That is her freedom card. But if/when details come out it will be interesting.
Now, what about other investigations? Epstein did not fly that plane to his Island. There are pilots and crew. There are companies with workers who built all of the air runway, the roads, the buildings, on Little St James Island. They did not build themselves.
There must have been staff for cleaning, cooking, washing. I doubt Epstein could even microwave a pie. Staff for ongoing maintenance, power and water supply, sewerage disposal, fueling of vehicles and boats. All of the fuel and food did not come on a plane, must have been boats or small ships.
There are a lot of people involved – collectively there is a lot of information available.
Who is stopping this??????

So, we learn today that the killer of the poor innocent 51 year old woman in Sockburn on Saturday, was in fact on ‘day-release’ from the Secure Unit of Hillmorton Hospital.

As anyone will tell you that is associated with the treatment of Mental Health patients……in the last couple of years decisions like this are now being made on political grounds, rather than on the medical opinion of Professionals.

Just look around you….under this government the entire country has become a Free-Range-Asylum.

  A paper presented by a Dane at a Psychiatric meeting recently claims that 1 in 4 cases of schizophrenia is due to cannabis (weed) use.
