According to the report on the EU free trade agreement, France insisted that the agreement include sanctions if parties failed to achieve emissions reductions targets.

“The deal includes sanctionable commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement.”

“She [Ardern] said there was no concern that New Zealand would face sanctions, as the Government had already legislated for a 1.5 degree global warming target.”

Yet again, Jacinda thinks that setting a target means that it will happen. Kiwibuild is the iconic example.

When New Zealand inevitably fails to meet the crazy zero carbon targets, we can now expect France to press the EU to pursue sanctions against New Zealand. And they will do so.

        There’s a very suspicious sequence of Minoan, Roman, Medieval and now Modern warm periods at ~1050 year intervals in ice core data. I’ve never seen an explanation as to why this can be discounted as a periodic trend that might be strongly influencing current climate.

It is always possible to cite this event, or that happening in support of highlighting ‘weird’, but the important thing is any significant variation from established norms. And on that font there appears to be nothing weird happening to our climate, save for the CO2 production as a result of the faithful’s laboured apocalyptic lamentations.

      My assumption is that they saw Cindy coming and took the opportunity to insert this clause as a “heads we win tails we don’t lose”. It would be an easy sell to Cindy because she doesn’t see the dichotomy between words and results.
      Pure speculation on my part of course. Maybe there are reciprocal sanctions if the EU fall short of their obligations.

        That’s less business than Fonterra lost by pulling out of Russia over the Ukraine War. The French big dairy firm, Danone, is still selling its products, notably baby food and yoghurt in Russia (and so is the Swiss firm Nestle).

  Our exports to China are $20B; This shitty trade will allow an extra $1.8B (Let’s be generous and say$1B). So if China reduces its imports from us by say 25% where is the balance of $3.2B going to come from.
  
  Not content to destroy our health system, law and order and economy our Glorious Leader now wants to dynamite our international trade.

    If you really want to see how weak this EU deal is, you only have to break it down by population.
    
    Trade with the USA. $22.9 per head of population.
    
    Trade with China. $14.28 per head of population
    
    Trade with the EU. $2.14 per head of population.
    
    To look at it another way, our trade with the UK alone is 4.5 Billion. Or $75 per head of population.
    
    This deal is the equivalent of the EU looking for spare change down the back of the couch….

  Benedict. On the subject of emissions I see the US Secretary of Energy has ordered the oil and gas producers to ramp up production. Same in the UK and Europe. These Bozos have realised that when the lights go out they go out of office.
  All their Bull Shit talk and virtue signalling means nothing if the lecky dont work. Same with their timelines. All of them will be out of office and most will be pushing up the daisies by their target dates.
  I say whilst NZ is in a better position than most with our high %age of renewables we need to double capacity by 2040 to meet demand. That means more hydro and therefore dams or better still Nuke. Rolls Royce ( not the car company thats owned by BMW) is developing small scale Nuke Plants that would be ideal for NZ. I say we have to park the Nuke Bull Shit and get real. Otherwise the lights will go out.

    Most folk do not understand energy and thermodynamics. Including almost all politicians.
    
    New Zealand consumes about 600 petajoules of energy daily. About half of that comes from petroleum. If you want to phase out oil from transport, you will need a massive increase in base load electricity generation. Back of the envelope it would need to at least double. That means coal, gas, hydro or nuclear. Take your pick.

        Steve O: Nothing clever about it at all. Lange was rather shallow and focussed on word-play such as he loved the sound of his own voice so much.
        
        This “quip” at the Oxford Union debate set back discussion about New Zealand’s electricity generation future immeasurably, and as well removed probably the best option for Carbon reduction (i.e. CO2) in NZ, accepting for the moment that is important.
        
        Options for extending power generation are now very limited – no coal, oil and gas not favoured because they are nasty fossil fuels, further impacted in about 1995 by refusal to allow a hydro scheme to proceed on the Ngakawau and by canning of a hydro scheme on the Clutha about 2002. Wind and solar generation are severely limited as we all know.
        
        The new thorium-based SMRs have the potential to reduce environmental impacts of other generating processes as well as being able to be situated closer to large electricity demand locations such as Auckland. In my view, Lange’s greatest legacy is that his speech at the Oxford debate stifled any discussion about nuclear power.

      We haven’t joined NATO! NATO is talking to us about Ukraine but that’s all. We are still training Ukrainian Troops to use the antiquated artillery pieces we gave them and there is a few Intelligence Officers and Logistics personnel. There’s also an RNZAF C130 flying stuff around but AFIK, none of these personnel are actually on the ground in Ukraine.

    The media have been acting as PR for Jacinda. Almost everybody knows that trade deals are negotiated over years by professional negotiators. Politicians ONLY get involved at the end when the deal is already done. The whole thing has simply been a marketing exercise for Jacinda and the deal. She (and the media) knew the deal was done the moment she hopped on a plane to ‘finish off the negotiations’.

  France has a big advantage in reducing emissions. The political ‘climate’ in France is such that France can readily build more nuclear power stations so has an increasing ability to support more and more electric and hydrogen vehicles. In this regard France is indeed fortunate.

On Wed night Prime news featured another anti Trump story. It was alleged by Cassidy Hutchinson at the Jan 6th “show trials” that Trump grabbed the wheel of the presidential limo and demanded they head towards the capital. He then choked a secret service agent. This was presented as hard evidence and another damning account of how bad Trump is.

But here’s what they left out. Ms Cassidy did not witness these events, they were told to her by someone else. NBC reports that two secret service agents will testify under oath that no assault took place. It is also unclear whether the president could grab the wheel from the backseat, there being partitions between driver and passenger.

But none of this was in the Prime news report. They appear to have a business model that requires one anti Trump story in every 30 minute news broadcast.
The NZ public watching this would think it’s true, Trump did that.

But here’s the thing. It’s most likely a lie. Like Russian collusion was a lie.
Who in the world would believe anything our media say anymore?

  What Hutchison was able to tell from what she saw was compelling, but the Limo story would have been classed as hearsay (I think).
  
  I don’t know the layout of the Beast (The Presidential limo) but there are some reporters who are aware of how the limo is layed out.
  
  Hutchison was told this by others, and to me, this is the least compelling part of her testimony.

It’s just a sideshow being run by the Dems to see if there’s any evidence that can be used to prevent Trump from running in the next election and an attempt to make the Democrat Mid Term chances look better and influence voters.

Is a Free Trade Agreement which excludes the dairy and red meat sectors really a Free Trade Agreement at all?

How quickly we seem to have forgotten that it was the dairy and red meat industries that kept us afloat during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Both industries are reportedly “deeply disappointed” with the outcome, which is not surprising. Let’s hope that they can be included in future enhancements to the FTA, and they don’t just get kicked down the road in the unholy rush to conclude negotiations whilst the PM was in town.

  Our bought and paid for media are desparately trying to make something of the deal with Minister O’Connor in full defensive mode. There are few crumbs to help a few exporters but by and large its all sizzle and no sausage.
  
  The climate change clause is so open wide either side could instigate it at any time. It will be several years before tariffs begin to change and Europe has so many non-trade barriers now most exporters will walk away, Seafood exporters are the only ones who will have a smile. They get a modest win.
  
  As for Ardern “sprinkling her stardust over the negotiations” – give me a break!! How stupid and childish.

  1. Those that ensure disclosure details of donors are complied with under current legislation.
  
  2. That those who are caught not complying with disclosure rules are taken to court and dealt with promptly and fairly.

  Last time I was in hospital, just on a year ago, on two of the six days I overhear one nurse say to another that the hospital had just gone “code red”. So I said to one what is “code red” and was told “It is when there are more patients than staff to cater for them”. So that main city hospital was stuffed back then – pre-covid influx.
  
  But another point was that I was asked, “Do you wish to have a chaplain visit you?” – so a voluntary decision whether I had any religious need fulfilled while being in hospital..
  
  However when I later got covid shots, the venue was profusely adorned by wall posters of Maori proverbs.
  
  So in relation to – The Interim Maori Health Authority has announced an inaugural funding package of $22 million to embed Te Ao Māori perspectives and initiatives throughout the health system – what form will that take.
  
  May people lying in hospital beds be forced to contemplate any Maori wall messaging to embed Te Ao Māori perspectives, or any similar approach.

  And with aspects of it being Te Ao Māori – Maori world view, therefore bordering on religion – should it be presented at all in any involuntary capacity in a State run health service?

The Labour government has announced a new board for the Reserve Bank which does not appear to include any notable economists but does include a number of people whose main qualification seems to be descent from several Maori tribes including an expert in Maori language. The chairman is also the U of Waikato’s VC which I imagine is a more than full-time job.

The US Supreme Court has issued yet another decision that will rile the left, the greenies especially. Who is game enough to wager that the media and the likes of the Green Party will not condemn this decision and paint the conservative majority on the Court as anti environmental protection. So far none of the articles I have read, on Newshub (Reuters), CNN and Stuff (Washington Post) mention the fact that the majority decision actually states that the rule imposing restrictions may well be a good idea.

  It’s the biggest decision of this term by far. It is wide reaching and entirely consistent with their other decisions.
  
  Basically, power should belong to the people of the US as much as possible.
  
  SCOTUS should not have law creating powers, States should have legislative powers where possible and bureaucracies should only have well defined powers, not the ability to unilaterally infringe on people’s rights without explicit legislation allowing it.
  
  That’s not ideological, it’s simply following how the Constitution intended the country to be run.
  
  The Originalists (the Constitution is what is written including amendments) have a relatively simple job and despite the anger, “Conservative” ideology doesn’t actually come into it (but does at the State legislative process which is why the “Liberals” are angry with SCTOUS).
  
  The “Liberal” justices however have to do backflips and all sorts of contortionist behaviour because they believe/claim that the Constitution is a living, breathing document that changes with the times and must change with ideological changes (but usually only the ideology of their half of the country).
  
  Basically, the Democrats keep trying to end run the Legislative process by using SCOTUS to enact their ideological agenda whereas the current SCOTUS is sending everything back to the States where possible.

    They started down that path in the 1970’s when they won Roe but lost the Equal Rights Amendment fight, but it will take a few more serious losses via SCOTUS before they go back to even trying amendments and legislation. The stuff article about the murder of Malachi Subecz is pretty detailed about his life and people involved in it however it doesn’t mention why the mother was in jail or for how long. Surely a single mother with a 5 year old being sentenced would have some bearing on whether she goes to jail, after all isn’t home detention dished out for even some serious crime. What Judge was responsible for this?

  To be fair though, the shrinks running our “secure mental health facilities” walk a tightrope – on the one side are rights of people who have been found not to be criminally liable by reason of insanity – a condition that can be rapidly reversed with modern drugs.
  
  On the other side are the rights of the rest of us not to be attacked and killed by some looney who got a message from God through the TV set and managed to hide that fact from his doctor.
  
  The most spectacular such failure was over 40 years ago. One Paul Julian, from Inglewood in Taranaki, killed his sister when he was 14 or 15. He was detained as a “special patient”, and released in 1981. Within weeks he had killed both a young woman and her boyfriend.
  
  After the Julian case – and every other case like it – there is a review which inevitably finds “errors of judgment” which we are assured won’t be repeated. And then, a few years later…
  
  I don’t know what the answer is. If it is neverto let the onetime criminally insane out, then we may as well do away with the “not guilty by reason of insanity” verdict. And unlike McVicar, I cannot support that.

Stuff continues to mislead over Kauri Dieback.

They say, “Kauri dieback is a fatal, incurable disease caused by a fungus-like pathogen, Phytophthora agathidicida, which was first found in the Waitākere Ranges in 2006.”

Ah yeah found in the Waitakere’s specifically in 2006. But first discovered by Peter Gadgil and NZ forestry who researched and published that research in 1974 which they omit giving the false impression that it was first discovered in 2006.

This fraudulent claim that it is a new pathogen has been being spread by those who want to close the forest and change ownership, since 2009. When Dr Gadgil himself wrote an article challenging them in NZ forestry .

“Let us be quite clear. The fungus now known as Phytophthora ‘taxon Agathis’ is the same species identified as Phytophthora heveae from Great Barrier Island in 1974. It is not a recent introduction. It is not a rapidly spreading virulent pathogen. A survey of the original disease site on Great Barrier Island in 2007 showed that the diseased area now occupied ca. 10 ha (Beever et al. 2009). The fungus was already present in the adjacent area in 1972, so the extension of the diseased area does not indicate spread of the fungus.

Its detection in the Waitakere Ranges (and more recently, in Trounson Kauri Park) is unlikely to represent recent introductions. Although most likely to have been present, it was not detected before because environmental conditions were not suitable for it to have caused serious damage. Its presence in sites containing healthy kauri and the recovery of affected trees in a dry season on Great Barrier Island has shown that the fungus is pathogenic only under a specific combination of environmental conditions.”

This is not contested or controversial. It is well know that Gadgil discovered dieback. So why are Stuff misleading us that it was found in 2006. Because the lie was it was a new rapidly spreading disease “and Kauri would be extinct in 10 years” They are not. Kauri are thriving as any drive through the Waitakere’s will show. Furthermore Kauri Dieback was discovered in the Waitakere Ranges Cascades by Frank Podger in 1970’s but found to be associated with Phytopthora Cinnamomi which is endemic and widespread but again activates only poor conditions. There are many phytopthoras (water moulds) in native soils that are linked to dieback of Kauri and other plants. Podger’s research recorded park Rangers observations and tree ring observation date dieback issues in some Kauri in the Cascades even earlier to the 1950’s .

The media called it misinformation when Trump claimed the USA first split the atom so how is this false claim any different.

The NZ Beech tree forests are also undergoing widespread dieback. DOC brochures call it a natural process. “No one is sure why, but it is thought likely to be a natural process triggered by several different factors; including storm damage and drought.” :”No one is sure why, but it is thought likely to be a natural process triggered by several different factors; including storm damage and drought”

DOC first observed beech dieback in 2006 the same year it was noticed in the Waitakere’s in Kauri. Drought.

      NZ does have an allowance for homeschooling: first child $743.00. second child $632.00. third child $521.00.

        We home schooled our two kids for two years while cruising the S. Pacific on our sailboat. We settled in New Zealand and they had no trouble going into the public school system.
        
        They did their daily school work as fast as they could so as to be free to do other things.

    You’re objecting to the money going to the parents instead of the school? If the kids aren’t at the school, the school shouldn’t get that money. It is no additional cost to the taxpayer.
    
    In the article I linked to they state parents get $6,500 per child even though public schools spend $10,000 per child. That’s a drastic saving for the taxpayer and the same would apply here. Are you in any doubt that private schools would be more cost effective than a monolithic, over-paid, over-staffed education bureaucracy that funds schools controlled by a militant, arrogant teachers’ union?
    
    Funding parents directly is better all around, most importantly it breaks the monopoly the state has over education.

        Deduct the allowance paid to them–yes, peanuts–and the taxpayer is still tens of thousands ahead.

I haven’t seen any serious comment on this blog about the reorganisation of the NZ health system apart from a few pointed remarks about $22 million. It would be interesting to better understand how the structure is expected to function and why the government think it’s going to get rid of the “postcode” lottery that exists today. All I can think is that the system will result in robbing Peter to pay Paul and racial division over outcomes.

  The restructure should end the postcode lottery as many existing DHBs are ridiculously small and with population based funding a few serious cases can send them into deficit, which they are supposed to avoid. One way to fix the deficit is to carry out less procedures. Seems crazy when demand is there but that is the incentive. There is also the issue of lack of surgical skill or psychiatrists in small DHBs.
  
  Doing away with the borders should mean equal access across the country but only if patients or doctors will travel. Would have been easier just to change the funding model.
  
  One result of centralising the system will be less incentive to control costs. At the moment the various boards are accountable. In the new system it will be the minister. That may not end well.
  
  Theoretically the system should be cheaper to run and more streamlined. That never actually seems to work out ( see Auckland Super city ). We are already going from 20 DHBs to 80 localities and they will all need funding.
  
  In the meantime everyone working for a DHB or the Ministry is probably frantically applying for jobs here or overseas. In the current market they will probably get one so our existing crisis could well get much worse.

    That @Don Beckett lack of detail is the problem, how moving from 20 DHBs to 60-80 Localities and four Regional Divisions, how can we avoid the “postcode” lottery is a challenge given some of the localities will only have 30,000 people and some will have many more. Plus the parallel management infrastructure ensuring equality between races. Despite there being no detail in the public releases there must be a business case identifying costs, savings, hoped for health outcomes and obviously benefits..

Malachi Subechz, known to Oranga Tamariki, was murdered by his caregiver.
We paid for the article under Open Justice fund. So where are the facts?

But “the extent to which the ministry had involvement with Malachi and his care arrangements is still unclear. ” Well why is it unclear? That is unacceptable and should be a pretty straight forward question. Who had custody of the child. Who placed him with the caregiver?

If O.T. placed the child there. How often do they check in on them. How often did they physically visit the home. How often did they call. How often does OT usually visit a child in their care. If he wasn’t in their care, why was he known to them?
Did the school or doctors make any complaints previously about his care. Had he ever been to hospital previously with any incidents of harm.
The child’s abuse was extreme it seems impossible to think this wasn’t obvious to many. Why aren’t we getting to the bottom of this.

The media’s job is to hold power to account. They can’t even answer the most basic questions. It is standard now when a crime is committed that few to no details are ever given.

Mrs Veteran’s friend decided discretion was the better part of valor and maneuvered her car around them continuing on to Paihia. Next minute a bang and a bullet hole in her boot.

I made a joke the other day about how my eldest has suggested leaving Auckland and using the farm to build a compound that can be defended. May not be a joke for much longer at this rate.

  When I dealt a lot with military law there was a thing called “ best evidence “. So you always sought that. What it meant was that hearsay was inadmissible and that a written statement was less acceptable than a witness who could be cross examined.

Chloe Swarbricks Alcohol Bill only targets Sports. Why? Just seems to be an attack on a certain demographic.
If sponsorship of alcohol is harmful then what about other events like Music and Arts Festivals. Rhythm and Vines has an alcohol sponsor , a youth audience, and the word “Vines” surely references grape vines and vineyards. There is also the Jim Beam Homegrown festival. The Queenstown winter festival with Monteiths. These festivals are advertised with flyers all over the city. The Fringe arts festival is sponsored by the Lion Foundation. Lopdell Art Gallery was built by licensing trust funds and their is “The Trusts Stadium” where the Trusts by naming rights. In fact many groups and schools in West Auckland and Invercargill are funded by liquor and pokies licensing trusts and usually there are plaques to thank the licensing trusts sponsors on the buildings walls. Is the liquor money sponsorship no longer harmful if it’s run through a licensing trust first.
And what about wine companies sponsoring charitable good causes like Hope Wines funding Mike Kings Gumboot Friday.

Today we have received from the Electoral Commission a letter regarding our Electoral Status for the October Council Elections.
Great as all appears tobe in order.
Like 50,000 plus other voters in the Tauranga Electorate we wo0uld be delighted to Vote a new Council in October.
But wait, we do not have any Candidates in the Electorate, as Mahuta has appointed us for another three years with four Commissioners.
What a waste of money, but of course it not their money anyway, but the Tax/Ratepayers.

    Obviously, the agents involved need to give their version under oath, as did the white house staffer who recounted what she heard.
    The secret service won’t want to get involved though, as its job is to protect the president and losing the confidence of any past, present or future president could potentially jeopardise that job.

A couple of weeks ago it was a bunch of drive-by shootings, now we’ve moved on to daily stabbings.

Meanwhile, Jacinda’s gallivanting about overseas and back home the most important issue on the Government’s mind appears to be how can we make everything more Maori, with Andrew Little describing the new Health NZ and the Maori Health Authority as “a step or two closer” to tino rangatiratanga when it came to health.

Nice to know where their priorities lie …

So watching One News tonight, the lead story was the free trade deal, with Simon Dallow explaining that tariffs would be removed from kiwifruit, wine and nearly all kymoana.

Wait, ah, what now? We rewind.

“… nearly all kymoana …”

The wife and I look at each other confused. She asks what on earth kymoana is. I shrug helplessly. Fire up Google. Wonder how to spell it.

“kymoana” – brings up a smattering of names which seem irrelevant.

“kimoana” – takes me to some weird Tumblr page which makes no sense; apparently it is also the name of Valerie Adams’ daughter.

“kaimoana” – discover this is seafood and decide that must be what it means.

Having wasted several minutes trying to interpret what the news reader is trying to tell us, the wife continues watching, muttering “if they meant seafood why didn’t they just say that”. I give up and walk out the room.

Headline in The Australian Fri July 1: Even mediocre would be easier to bear: how NZ lost its mojo. NZ needs to be careful not to turn into a failed state, risking a period of prolonged and seemingly unstoppable decline.

Re France comments – France subsidizes its farmers largely due to the lovely concept of ‘la France profonde’.

Meaning preserving the French rural countryside as in days of yore.

Which, without such preservation, le pays would revert to a less aesthetically pleasing mélange of forests and swamps. Or large tracts of industrialized farming as in Kansas.

It depends on how you value culture and define cost.

And, politically, self-sufficiency in food.
